فَإِذَا But when fa-idhā comes jāati the Overwhelming Calamity l-ṭāmatu the great l-kub'rā
But when there comes the greatest Overwhelming Calamity -
يَوْمَ (The) Day yawma will remember yatadhakkaru man l-insānu what mā he strove (for) saʿā
The Day when man will remember that for which he strove,
وَبُرِّزَتِ And will be made manifest waburrizati the Hellfire l-jaḥīmu to (him) who liman sees yarā
And Hellfire will be exposed for [all] those who see -
فَأَمَّا Then as for fa-ammā (him) who man transgressed ṭaghā
So as for he who transgressed
وَءَاثَرَ And preferred waāthara the life l-ḥayata (of) the world l-dun'yā
And preferred the life of the world,
فَإِنَّ Then indeed fa-inna the Hellfire l-jaḥīma it hiya (is) the refuge l-mawā
Then indeed, Hellfire will be [his] refuge.
وَأَمَّا But as for wa-ammā (him) who man feared khāfa standing maqāma (before) his Lord rabbihi and restrained wanahā his soul l-nafsa from ʿani the vain desires l-hawā
But as for he who feared the position of his Lord and prevented the soul from [unlawful] inclination,
فَإِنَّ Then indeed fa-inna Paradise l-janata it (is) hiya the refuge l-mawā
Then indeed, Paradise will be [his] refuge.
يَسْـَٔلُونَكَ They ask you yasalūnaka about ʿani the Hour l-sāʿati when ayyāna (is) its arrival mur'sāhā
They ask you, [O Muḥammad], about the Hour: when is its arrival?
فِيمَ In what fīma (are) you anta [of] min (to) mention it dhik'rāhā
In what [position] are you that you should mention it?
إِلَىٰ To ilā your Lord rabbika (is) its finality muntahāhā
To your Lord is its finality.
إِنَّمَآ Only innamā you anta (are) a warner mundhiru (for him) who man fears it yakhshāhā
You are only a warner for those who fear it.
كَأَنَّهُمْ As though they ka-annahum (the) Day yawma they see it yarawnahā not lam they had remained yalbathū except illā an evening ʿashiyyatan or aw a morning thereof ḍuḥāhā
It will be, on the Day they see it, as though they had not remained [in the world] except for an afternoon or a morning thereof.
