The Tidings
﷽
النبإ
عَمَّ About what ʿamma are they asking one another yatasāalūna
About what are they asking one another?
عَنِ About ʿani the News l-naba-i the Great l-ʿaẓīmi
About the great news1 -
ٱلَّذِى (About) which alladhī they hum (are) concerning it fīhi (in) disagreement mukh'talifūna
That over which they are in disagreement.
ثُمَّ Then thumma Nay kallā (soon) they will know sayaʿlamūna
Then, no! They are going to know.
أَلَمْ Have not alam We made najʿali the earth l-arḍa a resting place mihādan
Have We not made the earth a resting place?
وَٱلْجِبَالَ And the mountains wal-jibāla (as) pegs awtādan
And the mountains as stakes?1
وَخَلَقْنَـٰكُمْ And We created you wakhalaqnākum (in) pairs azwājan
And We created you in pairs.
وَجَعَلْنَا And We made wajaʿalnā your sleep nawmakum (for) rest subātan
And made your sleep [a means for] rest
وَجَعَلْنَا And We made wajaʿalnā the night al-layla (as) covering libāsan
And made the night as clothing1.
وَجَعَلْنَا And We made wajaʿalnā the day l-nahāra (for) livelihood maʿāshan
And made the day for livelihood.
وَبَنَيْنَا And We constructed wabanaynā over you fawqakum seven sabʿan strong shidādan
And constructed above you seven strong [heavens].
وَجَعَلْنَا And We placed wajaʿalnā a lamp sirājan burning wahhājan
And made [therein] a burning lamp
وَأَنزَلْنَا And We sent down wa-anzalnā from mina the rain clouds l-muʿ'ṣirāti water māan pouring abundantly thajjājan
And sent down, from the rain clouds, pouring water.
لِّنُخْرِجَ That We may bring forth linukh'rija thereby bihi grain ḥabban and vegetation wanabātan
That We may bring forth thereby grain and vegetation.
وَجَنَّـٰتٍ And gardens wajannātin (of) thick foliage alfāfan
And gardens of entwined growth.
إِنَّ Indeed inna (the) Day yawma (of) the Judgment l-faṣli is kāna an appointed time mīqātan
Indeed, the Day of Judgement is an appointed time -
يَوْمَ (The) Day yawma (in which) shall be blown yunfakhu in fī the trumpet l-ṣūri and you will come forth fatatūna (in) crowds afwājan
The Day the Horn is blown and you will come forth in multitudes
وَفُتِحَتِ And is opened wafutiḥati the heaven l-samāu and becomes fakānat gateways abwāban
And the heaven is opened and will become gateways.
وَسُيِّرَتِ And are moved wasuyyirati the mountains l-jibālu and become fakānat a mirage sarāban
And the mountains are removed and will be [but] a mirage.
إِنَّ Indeed inna Hell jahannama is kānat lying in wait mir'ṣādan
Indeed, Hell has been lying in wait
لِّلطَّـٰغِينَ For the transgressors lilṭṭāghīna a place of return maāban
For the transgressors, a place of return,
لَّـٰبِثِينَ (They will) be remaining lābithīna therein fīhā (for) ages aḥqāban
In which they will remain for ages [unending].
لَّا Not lā they will taste yadhūqūna therein fīhā coolness bardan and not walā any drink sharāban
They will not taste therein [any] coolness or drink.
إِلَّا Except illā scalding water ḥamīman and purulence waghassāqan
Except scalding water and [foul] purulence -
إِنَّهُمْ Indeed, they innahum were kānū not lā expecting yarjūna an account ḥisāban
Indeed, they were not expecting an account
وَكَذَّبُوا۟ And they denied wakadhabū Our Signs biāyātinā (with) denial kidhāban
And denied Our verses with [emphatic] denial.
وَكُلَّ And every wakulla thing shayin We have enumerated it aḥṣaynāhu (in) a Book kitāban
But all things We have enumerated in writing.
فَذُوقُوا۟ So taste fadhūqū and never falan We will increase you nazīdakum except illā (in) punishment ʿadhāban
"So taste [the penalty], and never will We increase you except in torment."1
إِنَّ Indeed inna for the righteous lil'muttaqīna (is) success mafāzan
Indeed, for the righteous is attainment1 -
حَدَآئِقَ Gardens ḥadāiqa and grapevines wa-aʿnāban
Gardens and grapevines.
وَكَوَاعِبَ And splendid companions wakawāʿiba well-matched atrāban
And full-breasted [companions] of equal age.
لَّا Not lā they will hear yasmaʿūna therein fīhā any vain talk laghwan and not walā any falsehood kidhāban
No ill speech will they hear therein or any falsehood -
جَزَآءًۭ (As) a reward jazāan from min your Lord rabbika a gift ʿaṭāan (according to) account ḥisāban
[As] reward from your Lord, [a generous] gift [made due by] account,1
رَّبِّ Lord rabbi (of) the heavens l-samāwāti and the earth wal-arḍi and whatever wamā (is) between both of them baynahumā the Most Gracious l-raḥmāni not lā they have power yamlikūna from Him min'hu (to) address khiṭāban
[From] the Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them, the Most Merciful. They possess not from Him [authority for] speech.1
يَوْمَ (The) Day yawma will stand yaqūmu the Spirit l-rūḥu and the Angels wal-malāikatu (in) rows ṣaffan not lā they will speak yatakallamūna except illā (one) who man permits adhina [for] him lahu the Most Gracious l-raḥmānu and he (will) say waqāla (what is) correct ṣawāban
The Day that the Spirit [i.e., Gabriel] and the angels will stand in rows, they will not speak except for one whom the Most Merciful permits, and he will say what is correct.
ذَٰلِكَ That dhālika (is) the Day l-yawmu the True l-ḥaqu So whoever faman wills shāa let him take ittakhadha towards ilā his Lord rabbihi a return maāban
That is the True [i.e., certain] Day; so he who wills may take to his Lord a [way of] return.1
إِنَّآ Indeed We innā [We] have warned you andharnākum (of) a punishment ʿadhāban near qarīban (the) Day yawma will see yanẓuru the man l-maru what mā have sent forth qaddamat his hands yadāhu and will say wayaqūlu the disbeliever l-kāfiru O I wish yālaytanī I were kuntu dust turāban
Indeed, We have warned you of an impending punishment on the Day when a man will observe what his hands have put forth1 and the disbeliever will say, "Oh, I wish that I were dust!"
