The Tidings

النبإ

عَمَّ

About what

ʿamma

يَتَسَآءَلُونَ

are they asking one another

yatasāalūna

١

About what are they asking one another?

— Saheeh International

عَنِ

About

ʿani

ٱلنَّبَإِ

the News

l-naba-i

ٱلْعَظِيمِ

the Great

l-ʿaẓīmi

٢

About the great news1 -

— Saheeh International

ٱلَّذِى

(About) which

alladhī

هُمْ

they

hum

فِيهِ

(are) concerning it

fīhi

مُخْتَلِفُونَ

(in) disagreement

mukh'talifūna

٣

That over which they are in disagreement.

— Saheeh International

كَلَّا

Nay

kallā

سَيَعْلَمُونَ

(soon) they will know

sayaʿlamūna

٤

No! They are going to know.

— Saheeh International

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

كَلَّا

Nay

kallā

سَيَعْلَمُونَ

(soon) they will know

sayaʿlamūna

٥

Then, no! They are going to know.

— Saheeh International

أَلَمْ

Have not

alam

نَجْعَلِ

We made

najʿali

ٱلْأَرْضَ

the earth

l-arḍa

مِهَـٰدًۭا

a resting place

mihādan

٦

Have We not made the earth a resting place?

— Saheeh International

وَٱلْجِبَالَ

And the mountains

wal-jibāla

أَوْتَادًۭا

(as) pegs

awtādan

٧

And the mountains as stakes?1

— Saheeh International

وَخَلَقْنَـٰكُمْ

And We created you

wakhalaqnākum

أَزْوَٰجًۭا

(in) pairs

azwājan

٨

And We created you in pairs.

— Saheeh International

وَجَعَلْنَا

And We made

wajaʿalnā

نَوْمَكُمْ

your sleep

nawmakum

سُبَاتًۭا

(for) rest

subātan

٩

And made your sleep [a means for] rest

— Saheeh International

وَجَعَلْنَا

And We made

wajaʿalnā

ٱلَّيْلَ

the night

al-layla

لِبَاسًۭا

(as) covering

libāsan

١٠

And made the night as clothing1.

— Saheeh International

وَجَعَلْنَا

And We made

wajaʿalnā

ٱلنَّهَارَ

the day

l-nahāra

مَعَاشًۭا

(for) livelihood

maʿāshan

١١

And made the day for livelihood.

— Saheeh International

وَبَنَيْنَا

And We constructed

wabanaynā

فَوْقَكُمْ

over you

fawqakum

سَبْعًۭا

seven

sabʿan

شِدَادًۭا

strong

shidādan

١٢

And constructed above you seven strong [heavens].

— Saheeh International

وَجَعَلْنَا

And We placed

wajaʿalnā

سِرَاجًۭا

a lamp

sirājan

وَهَّاجًۭا

burning

wahhājan

١٣

And made [therein] a burning lamp

— Saheeh International

وَأَنزَلْنَا

And We sent down

wa-anzalnā

مِنَ

from

mina

ٱلْمُعْصِرَٰتِ

the rain clouds

l-muʿ'ṣirāti

مَآءًۭ

water

māan

ثَجَّاجًۭا

pouring abundantly

thajjājan

١٤

And sent down, from the rain clouds, pouring water.

— Saheeh International

لِّنُخْرِجَ

That We may bring forth

linukh'rija

بِهِۦ

thereby

bihi

حَبًّۭا

grain

ḥabban

وَنَبَاتًۭا

and vegetation

wanabātan

١٥

That We may bring forth thereby grain and vegetation.

— Saheeh International

وَجَنَّـٰتٍ

And gardens

wajannātin

أَلْفَافًا

(of) thick foliage

alfāfan

١٦

And gardens of entwined growth.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

يَوْمَ

(the) Day

yawma

ٱلْفَصْلِ

(of) the Judgment

l-faṣli

كَانَ

is

kāna

مِيقَـٰتًۭا

an appointed time

mīqātan

١٧

Indeed, the Day of Judgement is an appointed time -

— Saheeh International

يَوْمَ

(The) Day

yawma

يُنفَخُ

(in which) shall be blown

yunfakhu

فِى

in

ٱلصُّورِ

the trumpet

l-ṣūri

فَتَأْتُونَ

and you will come forth

fatatūna

أَفْوَاجًۭا

(in) crowds

afwājan

١٨

The Day the Horn is blown and you will come forth in multitudes

— Saheeh International

وَفُتِحَتِ

And is opened

wafutiḥati

ٱلسَّمَآءُ

the heaven

l-samāu

فَكَانَتْ

and becomes

fakānat

أَبْوَٰبًۭا

gateways

abwāban

١٩

And the heaven is opened and will become gateways.

— Saheeh International

وَسُيِّرَتِ

And are moved

wasuyyirati

ٱلْجِبَالُ

the mountains

l-jibālu

فَكَانَتْ

and become

fakānat

سَرَابًا

a mirage

sarāban

٢٠

And the mountains are removed and will be [but] a mirage.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

جَهَنَّمَ

Hell

jahannama

كَانَتْ

is

kānat

مِرْصَادًۭا

lying in wait

mir'ṣādan

٢١

Indeed, Hell has been lying in wait

— Saheeh International

لِّلطَّـٰغِينَ

For the transgressors

lilṭṭāghīna

مَـَٔابًۭا

a place of return

maāban

٢٢

For the transgressors, a place of return,

— Saheeh International

لَّـٰبِثِينَ

(They will) be remaining

lābithīna

فِيهَآ

therein

fīhā

أَحْقَابًۭا

(for) ages

aḥqāban

٢٣

In which they will remain for ages [unending].

— Saheeh International

لَّا

Not

يَذُوقُونَ

they will taste

yadhūqūna

فِيهَا

therein

fīhā

بَرْدًۭا

coolness

bardan

وَلَا

and not

walā

شَرَابًا

any drink

sharāban

٢٤

They will not taste therein [any] coolness or drink.

— Saheeh International

إِلَّا

Except

illā

حَمِيمًۭا

scalding water

ḥamīman

وَغَسَّاقًۭا

and purulence

waghassāqan

٢٥

Except scalding water and [foul] purulence -

— Saheeh International

جَزَآءًۭ

A recompense

jazāan

وِفَاقًا

appropriate

wifāqan

٢٦

An appropriate recompense.1

— Saheeh International

إِنَّهُمْ

Indeed, they

innahum

كَانُوا۟

were

kānū

لَا

not

يَرْجُونَ

expecting

yarjūna

حِسَابًۭا

an account

ḥisāban

٢٧

Indeed, they were not expecting an account

— Saheeh International

وَكَذَّبُوا۟

And they denied

wakadhabū

بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا

Our Signs

biāyātinā

كِذَّابًۭا

(with) denial

kidhāban

٢٨

And denied Our verses with [emphatic] denial.

— Saheeh International

وَكُلَّ

And every

wakulla

شَىْءٍ

thing

shayin

أَحْصَيْنَـٰهُ

We have enumerated it

aḥṣaynāhu

كِتَـٰبًۭا

(in) a Book

kitāban

٢٩

But all things We have enumerated in writing.

— Saheeh International

فَذُوقُوا۟

So taste

fadhūqū

فَلَن

and never

falan

نَّزِيدَكُمْ

We will increase you

nazīdakum

إِلَّا

except

illā

عَذَابًا

(in) punishment

ʿadhāban

٣٠

"So taste [the penalty], and never will We increase you except in torment."1

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

لِلْمُتَّقِينَ

for the righteous

lil'muttaqīna

مَفَازًا

(is) success

mafāzan

٣١

Indeed, for the righteous is attainment1 -

— Saheeh International

حَدَآئِقَ

Gardens

ḥadāiqa

وَأَعْنَـٰبًۭا

and grapevines

wa-aʿnāban

٣٢

Gardens and grapevines.

— Saheeh International

وَكَوَاعِبَ

And splendid companions

wakawāʿiba

أَتْرَابًۭا

well-matched

atrāban

٣٣

And full-breasted [companions] of equal age.

— Saheeh International

وَكَأْسًۭا

And a cup

wakasan

دِهَاقًۭا

full

dihāqan

٣٤

And a full cup.1

— Saheeh International

لَّا

Not

يَسْمَعُونَ

they will hear

yasmaʿūna

فِيهَا

therein

fīhā

لَغْوًۭا

any vain talk

laghwan

وَلَا

and not

walā

كِذَّٰبًۭا

any falsehood

kidhāban

٣٥

No ill speech will they hear therein or any falsehood -

— Saheeh International

جَزَآءًۭ

(As) a reward

jazāan

مِّن

from

min

رَّبِّكَ

your Lord

rabbika

عَطَآءً

a gift

ʿaṭāan

حِسَابًۭا

(according to) account

ḥisāban

٣٦

[As] reward from your Lord, [a generous] gift [made due by] account,1

— Saheeh International

رَّبِّ

Lord

rabbi

ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ

(of) the heavens

l-samāwāti

وَٱلْأَرْضِ

and the earth

wal-arḍi

وَمَا

and whatever

wamā

بَيْنَهُمَا

(is) between both of them

baynahumā

ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ۖ

the Most Gracious

l-raḥmāni

لَا

not

يَمْلِكُونَ

they have power

yamlikūna

مِنْهُ

from Him

min'hu

خِطَابًۭا

(to) address

khiṭāban

٣٧

[From] the Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them, the Most Merciful. They possess not from Him [authority for] speech.1

— Saheeh International

يَوْمَ

(The) Day

yawma

يَقُومُ

will stand

yaqūmu

ٱلرُّوحُ

the Spirit

l-rūḥu

وَٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ

and the Angels

wal-malāikatu

صَفًّۭا ۖ

(in) rows

ṣaffan

لَّا

not

يَتَكَلَّمُونَ

they will speak

yatakallamūna

إِلَّا

except

illā

مَنْ

(one) who

man

أَذِنَ

permits

adhina

لَهُ

[for] him

lahu

ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُ

the Most Gracious

l-raḥmānu

وَقَالَ

and he (will) say

waqāla

صَوَابًۭا

(what is) correct

ṣawāban

٣٨

The Day that the Spirit [i.e., Gabriel] and the angels will stand in rows, they will not speak except for one whom the Most Merciful permits, and he will say what is correct.

— Saheeh International

ذَٰلِكَ

That

dhālika

ٱلْيَوْمُ

(is) the Day

l-yawmu

ٱلْحَقُّ ۖ

the True

l-ḥaqu

فَمَن

So whoever

faman

شَآءَ

wills

shāa

ٱتَّخَذَ

let him take

ittakhadha

إِلَىٰ

towards

ilā

رَبِّهِۦ

his Lord

rabbihi

مَـَٔابًا

a return

maāban

٣٩

That is the True [i.e., certain] Day; so he who wills may take to his Lord a [way of] return.1

— Saheeh International

إِنَّآ

Indeed We

innā

أَنذَرْنَـٰكُمْ

[We] have warned you

andharnākum

عَذَابًۭا

(of) a punishment

ʿadhāban

قَرِيبًۭا

near

qarīban

يَوْمَ

(the) Day

yawma

يَنظُرُ

will see

yanẓuru

ٱلْمَرْءُ

the man

l-maru

مَا

what

قَدَّمَتْ

have sent forth

qaddamat

يَدَاهُ

his hands

yadāhu

وَيَقُولُ

and will say

wayaqūlu

ٱلْكَافِرُ

the disbeliever

l-kāfiru

يَـٰلَيْتَنِى

O I wish

yālaytanī

كُنتُ

I were

kuntu

تُرَٰبًۢا

dust

turāban

٤٠

Indeed, We have warned you of an impending punishment on the Day when a man will observe what his hands have put forth1 and the disbeliever will say, "Oh, I wish that I were dust!"

— Saheeh International
