The Emissaries
﷽
المرسلات
وَٱلْمُرْسَلَـٰتِ By the ones sent forth wal-mur'salāti one after another ʿur'fan
By those [winds] sent forth in gusts
فَٱلْعَـٰصِفَـٰتِ And the winds that blow fal-ʿāṣifāti violently ʿaṣfan
And the winds that blow violently
وَٱلنَّـٰشِرَٰتِ And the ones that scatter wal-nāshirāti far and wide nashran
And [by] the winds that spread [clouds]
فَٱلْفَـٰرِقَـٰتِ And those who separate fal-fāriqāti (by the) Criterion farqan
And those [angels] who bring criterion1
فَٱلْمُلْقِيَـٰتِ And those who bring down fal-mul'qiyāti (the) Reminder dhik'ran
And those [angels] who deliver a message.
عُذْرًا (As) justification ʿudh'ran or aw warning nudh'ran
As justification or warning,
إِنَّمَا Indeed, what innamā you are promised tūʿadūna will surely occur lawāqiʿun
Indeed, what you are promised is to occur.
فَإِذَا So when fa-idhā the stars l-nujūmu are obliterated ṭumisat
So when the stars are obliterated
وَإِذَا And when wa-idhā the heaven l-samāu is cleft asunder furijat
And when the heaven is opened
وَإِذَا And when wa-idhā the mountains l-jibālu are blown away nusifat
And when the mountains are blown away
وَإِذَا And when wa-idhā the Messengers l-rusulu are gathered to their appointed time uqqitat
And when the messengers' time has come...1
لِأَىِّ For what li-ayyi Day yawmin are (these) postponed ujjilat
For what Day was it postponed?1
وَمَآ And what wamā will make you know adrāka what mā (is the) Day yawmu (of) the Judgment l-faṣli
And what can make you know what is the Day of Judgement?
وَيْلٌۭ Woe waylun that Day yawma-idhin to the deniers lil'mukadhibīna
Woe,1 that Day, to the deniers.
أَلَمْ Did not alam We destroy nuh'liki the former (people) l-awalīna
Did We not destroy the former peoples?
ثُمَّ Then thumma We follow them up nut'biʿuhumu (with) the later ones l-ākhirīna
Then We will follow them with the later ones.
كَذَٰلِكَ Thus kadhālika We deal nafʿalu with the criminals bil-muj'rimīna
Thus do We deal with the criminals.
وَيْلٌۭ Woe waylun that Day yawma-idhin to the deniers lil'mukadhibīna
Woe, that Day, to the deniers.
أَلَمْ Did not alam We create you nakhluqkkum from min a water māin despicable mahīnin
Did We not create you from a liquid disdained?
فَجَعَلْنَـٰهُ Then We placed it fajaʿalnāhu in fī an abode qarārin safe makīnin
And We placed it in a firm lodging [i.e., the womb]
فَقَدَرْنَا So We measured faqadarnā and Best faniʿ'ma (are We to) measure l-qādirūna
And We determined [it], and excellent [are We] to determine.
وَيْلٌۭ Woe waylun that Day yawma-idhin to the deniers lil'mukadhibīna
Woe, that Day, to the deniers.
أَلَمْ Have not alam We made najʿali the earth l-arḍa a receptacle kifātan
Have We not made the earth a container
أَحْيَآءًۭ (For the) living aḥyāan and (the) dead wa-amwātan
Of the living and the dead?
وَجَعَلْنَا And We made wajaʿalnā therein fīhā firmly set mountains rawāsiya lofty shāmikhātin and We gave you to drink wa-asqaynākum water māan sweet furātan
And We placed therein lofty, firmly set mountains and have given you to drink sweet water.
وَيْلٌۭ Woe waylun that Day yawma-idhin to the deniers lil'mukadhibīna
Woe, that Day, to the deniers.
ٱنطَلِقُوٓا۟ Proceed inṭaliqū to ilā what mā you used to kuntum in it bihi deny tukadhibūna
[They will be told], "Proceed to that which you used to deny.
ٱنطَلِقُوٓا۟ Proceed inṭaliqū to ilā a shadow ẓillin having dhī three thalāthi columns shuʿabin
Proceed to a shadow [of smoke] having three columns.
لَّا No lā cool shade ẓalīlin and not walā availing yugh'nī against mina the flame l-lahabi
[But having] no cool shade and availing not against the flame."
إِنَّهَا Indeed, it innahā throws up tarmī sparks bishararin as the fortress kal-qaṣri
Indeed, it throws sparks [as huge] as a fortress,
كَأَنَّهُۥ As if they (were) ka-annahu camels jimālatun yellow ṣuf'run
As if they were yellowish [black] camels.
وَيْلٌۭ Woe waylun that Day yawma-idhin to the deniers lil'mukadhibīna
Woe, that Day, to the deniers.
هَـٰذَا This hādhā (is) a Day yawmu not lā they will speak yanṭiqūna
This is a Day they will not speak,
وَلَا And not walā will it be permitted yu'dhanu for them lahum to make excuses fayaʿtadhirūna
Nor will it be permitted for them to make an excuse.
وَيْلٌۭ Woe waylun that Day yawma-idhin to the deniers lil'mukadhibīna
Woe, that Day, to the deniers.
هَـٰذَا This hādhā (is the) Day yawmu (of) Judgment l-faṣli We have gathered you jamaʿnākum and the former (people) wal-awalīna
This is the Day of Judgement; We will have assembled you and the former peoples.
فَإِن So if fa-in is kāna for you lakum a plan kaydun then plan against Me fakīdūni
So if you have a plan, then plan against Me.
وَيْلٌۭ Woe waylun that Day yawma-idhin to the deniers lil'mukadhibīna
Woe, that Day, to the deniers.
إِنَّ Indeed inna the righteous l-mutaqīna (will be) in fī shades ẓilālin and springs waʿuyūnin
Indeed, the righteous will be among shades and springs
وَفَوَٰكِهَ And fruits wafawākiha from what mimmā they desire yashtahūna
And fruits from whatever they desire,
كُلُوا۟ Eat kulū and drink wa-ish'rabū (in) satisfaction hanīan for what bimā you used to kuntum do taʿmalūna
[Being told], "Eat and drink in satisfaction for what you used to do."
إِنَّا Indeed, We innā thus kadhālika reward najzī the good-doers l-muḥ'sinīna
Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.
وَيْلٌۭ Woe waylun that Day yawma-idhin to the deniers lil'mukadhibīna
Woe, that Day, to the deniers.
كُلُوا۟ Eat kulū and enjoy yourselves watamattaʿū a little qalīlan indeed, you innakum (are) criminals muj'rimūna
[O disbelievers], eat and enjoy yourselves a little; indeed, you are criminals.
وَيْلٌۭ Woe waylun that Day yawma-idhin to the deniers lil'mukadhibīna
Woe, that Day, to the deniers.
وَإِذَا And when wa-idhā it is said qīla to them lahumu Bow ir'kaʿū not lā they bow yarkaʿūna
And when it is said to them, "Bow [in prayer]," they do not bow.
وَيْلٌۭ Woe waylun that Day yawma-idhin to the deniers lil'mukadhibīna
Woe, that Day, to the deniers.
فَبِأَىِّ Then in what fabi-ayyi statement ḥadīthin after it baʿdahu will they believe yu'minūna
Then in what statement after it [i.e., the Qur’ān] will they believe?
