Al-Jinn

The Jinn

الجن

قُلْ

Say

qul

أُوحِىَ

It has been revealed

ūḥiya

إِلَىَّ

to me

ilayya

أَنَّهُ

that

annahu

ٱسْتَمَعَ

listened

is'tamaʿa

نَفَرٌۭ

a group

nafarun

مِّنَ

of

mina

ٱلْجِنِّ

the jinn

l-jini

فَقَالُوٓا۟

and they said

faqālū

إِنَّا

Indeed, we

innā

سَمِعْنَا

heard

samiʿ'nā

قُرْءَانًا

a Quran

qur'ānan

عَجَبًۭا

amazing

ʿajaban

١

Say, [O Muḥammad], "It has been revealed to me that a group of the jinn listened and said, 'Indeed, we have heard an amazing Qur’ān [i.e., recitation].

— Saheeh International

يَهْدِىٓ

It guides

yahdī

إِلَى

to

ilā

ٱلرُّشْدِ

the right way

l-rush'di

فَـَٔامَنَّا

so we believe

faāmannā

بِهِۦ ۖ

in it

bihi

وَلَن

and never

walan

نُّشْرِكَ

we will associate

nush'rika

بِرَبِّنَآ

with our Lord

birabbinā

أَحَدًۭا

anyone

aḥadan

٢

It guides to the right course, and we have believed in it. And we will never associate with our Lord anyone.

— Saheeh International

وَأَنَّهُۥ

And that He

wa-annahu

تَعَـٰلَىٰ

Exalted is

taʿālā

جَدُّ

(the) Majesty

jaddu

رَبِّنَا

(of) our Lord

rabbinā

مَا

not

ٱتَّخَذَ

He has taken

ittakhadha

صَـٰحِبَةًۭ

a wife

ṣāḥibatan

وَلَا

and not

walā

وَلَدًۭا

a son

waladan

٣

And [it teaches] that exalted is the nobleness of our Lord; He has not taken a wife or a son

— Saheeh International

وَأَنَّهُۥ

And that he

wa-annahu

كَانَ

used to

kāna

يَقُولُ

speak

yaqūlu

سَفِيهُنَا

the foolish among us

safīhunā

عَلَى

against

ʿalā

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

شَطَطًۭا

an excessive transgression

shaṭaṭan

٤

And that our foolish one [i.e., Iblees]1 has been saying about Allāh an excessive transgression.

— Saheeh International

وَأَنَّا

And that we

wa-annā

ظَنَنَّآ

thought

ẓanannā

أَن

that

an

لَّن

never

lan

تَقُولَ

will say

taqūla

ٱلْإِنسُ

the men

l-insu

وَٱلْجِنُّ

and the jinn

wal-jinu

عَلَى

against

ʿalā

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

كَذِبًۭا

any lie

kadhiban

٥

And we had thought that mankind and the jinn would never speak about Allāh a lie.

— Saheeh International

وَأَنَّهُۥ

And that

wa-annahu

كَانَ

(there) were

kāna

رِجَالٌۭ

men

rijālun

مِّنَ

among

mina

ٱلْإِنسِ

mankind

l-insi

يَعُوذُونَ

who sought refuge

yaʿūdhūna

بِرِجَالٍۢ

in (the) men

birijālin

مِّنَ

from

mina

ٱلْجِنِّ

the jinn

l-jini

فَزَادُوهُمْ

so they increased them

fazādūhum

رَهَقًۭا

(in) burden

rahaqan

٦

And there were men from mankind who sought refuge in men from the jinn, so they [only] increased them in burden [i.e., sin].

— Saheeh International

وَأَنَّهُمْ

And that they

wa-annahum

ظَنُّوا۟

thought

ẓannū

كَمَا

as

kamā

ظَنَنتُمْ

you thought

ẓanantum

أَن

that

an

لَّن

never

lan

يَبْعَثَ

will raise

yabʿatha

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

أَحَدًۭا

anyone

aḥadan

٧

And they had thought, as you thought, that Allāh would never send anyone [as a messenger].

— Saheeh International

وَأَنَّا

And that we

wa-annā

لَمَسْنَا

sought to touch

lamasnā

ٱلسَّمَآءَ

the heaven

l-samāa

فَوَجَدْنَـٰهَا

but we found it

fawajadnāhā

مُلِئَتْ

filled (with)

muli-at

حَرَسًۭا

guards

ḥarasan

شَدِيدًۭا

severe

shadīdan

وَشُهُبًۭا

and flaming fires

washuhuban

٨

And we have sought [to reach] the heaven but found it filled with powerful guards and burning flames.

— Saheeh International

وَأَنَّا

And that we

wa-annā

كُنَّا

used to

kunnā

نَقْعُدُ

sit

naqʿudu

مِنْهَا

there in

min'hā

مَقَـٰعِدَ

positions

maqāʿida

لِلسَّمْعِ ۖ

for hearing

lilssamʿi

فَمَن

but (he) who

faman

يَسْتَمِعِ

listens

yastamiʿi

ٱلْـَٔانَ

now

l-āna

يَجِدْ

will find

yajid

لَهُۥ

for him

lahu

شِهَابًۭا

a flaming fire

shihāban

رَّصَدًۭا

waiting

raṣadan

٩

And we used to sit therein in positions for hearing,1 but whoever listens now will find a burning flame lying in wait for him.

— Saheeh International

وَأَنَّا

And that we

wa-annā

لَا

not

نَدْرِىٓ

we know

nadrī

أَشَرٌّ

whether evil

asharrun

أُرِيدَ

is intended

urīda

بِمَن

for (those) who

biman

فِى

(are) in

ٱلْأَرْضِ

the earth

l-arḍi

أَمْ

or

am

أَرَادَ

intends

arāda

بِهِمْ

for them

bihim

رَبُّهُمْ

their Lord

rabbuhum

رَشَدًۭا

a right path

rashadan

١٠

And we do not know [therefore] whether evil is intended for those on earth or whether their Lord intends for them a right course.

— Saheeh International

وَأَنَّا

And that [we]

wa-annā

مِنَّا

among us

minnā

ٱلصَّـٰلِحُونَ

(are) the righteous

l-ṣāliḥūna

وَمِنَّا

and among us

waminnā

دُونَ

(are) other than

dūna

ذَٰلِكَ ۖ

that

dhālika

كُنَّا

We

kunnā

طَرَآئِقَ

(are on) ways

ṭarāiqa

قِدَدًۭا

different

qidadan

١١

And among us are the righteous, and among us are [others] not so; we were [of] divided ways.1

— Saheeh International

وَأَنَّا

And that we

wa-annā

ظَنَنَّآ

[we] have become certain

ẓanannā

أَن

that

an

لَّن

never

lan

نُّعْجِزَ

we will cause failure

nuʿ'jiza

ٱللَّهَ

(to) Allah

l-laha

فِى

in

ٱلْأَرْضِ

the earth

l-arḍi

وَلَن

and never

walan

نُّعْجِزَهُۥ

we can escape Him

nuʿ'jizahu

هَرَبًۭا

(by) flight

haraban

١٢

And we have become certain that we will never cause failure to Allāh upon earth, nor can we escape Him by flight.

— Saheeh International

وَأَنَّا

And that [we]

wa-annā

لَمَّا

when

lammā

سَمِعْنَا

we heard

samiʿ'nā

ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ

the Guidance

l-hudā

ءَامَنَّا

we believed

āmannā

بِهِۦ ۖ

in it

bihi

فَمَن

And whoever

faman

يُؤْمِنۢ

believes

yu'min

بِرَبِّهِۦ

in his Lord

birabbihi

فَلَا

then not

falā

يَخَافُ

he will fear

yakhāfu

بَخْسًۭا

any loss

bakhsan

وَلَا

and not

walā

رَهَقًۭا

any burden

rahaqan

١٣

And when we heard the guidance [i.e., the Qur’ān], we believed in it. And whoever believes in his Lord will not fear deprivation or burden.1

— Saheeh International

وَأَنَّا

And that we

wa-annā

مِنَّا

among us

minnā

ٱلْمُسْلِمُونَ

(are) Muslims

l-mus'limūna

وَمِنَّا

and among us

waminnā

ٱلْقَـٰسِطُونَ ۖ

(are) unjust

l-qāsiṭūna

فَمَنْ

And whoever

faman

أَسْلَمَ

submits

aslama

فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

then those

fa-ulāika

تَحَرَّوْا۟

have sought

taḥarraw

رَشَدًۭا

(the) right path

rashadan

١٤

And among us are Muslims [in submission to Allāh], and among us are the unjust.1 And whoever has become Muslim - those have sought out the right course.

— Saheeh International

وَأَمَّا

And as for

wa-ammā

ٱلْقَـٰسِطُونَ

the unjust

l-qāsiṭūna

فَكَانُوا۟

they will be

fakānū

لِجَهَنَّمَ

for Hell

lijahannama

حَطَبًۭا

firewood

ḥaṭaban

١٥

But as for the unjust, they will be, for Hell, firewood.'

— Saheeh International

وَأَلَّوِ

And that if

wa-allawi

ٱسْتَقَـٰمُوا۟

they had remained

is'taqāmū

عَلَى

on

ʿalā

ٱلطَّرِيقَةِ

the Way

l-ṭarīqati

لَأَسْقَيْنَـٰهُم

surely We (would) have given them to drink

la-asqaynāhum

مَّآءً

water

māan

غَدَقًۭا

(in) abundance

ghadaqan

١٦

And [Allāh revealed] that if they had remained straight on the way, We would have given them abundant rain [i.e., provision].

— Saheeh International

لِّنَفْتِنَهُمْ

That We might test them

linaftinahum

فِيهِ ۚ

therein

fīhi

وَمَن

And whoever

waman

يُعْرِضْ

turns away

yuʿ'riḍ

عَن

from

ʿan

ذِكْرِ

the Remembrance

dhik'ri

رَبِّهِۦ

(of) his Lord

rabbihi

يَسْلُكْهُ

He will make him enter

yasluk'hu

عَذَابًۭا

a punishment

ʿadhāban

صَعَدًۭا

severe

ṣaʿadan

١٧

So We might test them therein. And whoever turns away from the remembrance of his Lord1 He will put into arduous punishment.

— Saheeh International

وَأَنَّ

And that

wa-anna

ٱلْمَسَـٰجِدَ

the masjids

l-masājida

لِلَّهِ

(are) for Allah

lillahi

فَلَا

so (do) not

falā

تَدْعُوا۟

call

tadʿū

مَعَ

with

maʿa

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

أَحَدًۭا

anyone

aḥadan

١٨

And [He revealed] that the masjids1 are for Allāh, so do not invoke2 with Allāh anyone.

— Saheeh International

وَأَنَّهُۥ

And that

wa-annahu

لَمَّا

when

lammā

قَامَ

stood up

qāma

عَبْدُ

(the) slave

ʿabdu

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

يَدْعُوهُ

calling (upon) Him

yadʿūhu

كَادُوا۟

they almost

kādū

يَكُونُونَ

became

yakūnūna

عَلَيْهِ

around him

ʿalayhi

لِبَدًۭا

a compacted mass

libadan

١٩

And that when the Servant [i.e., Prophet] of Allāh stood up supplicating Him, they almost became about him a compacted mass."1

— Saheeh International

قُلْ

Say

qul

إِنَّمَآ

Only

innamā

أَدْعُوا۟

I call upon

adʿū

رَبِّى

my Lord

rabbī

وَلَآ

and not

walā

أُشْرِكُ

I associate

ush'riku

بِهِۦٓ

with Him

bihi

أَحَدًۭا

anyone

aḥadan

٢٠

Say, [O Muḥammad], "I only invoke my Lord and do not associate with Him anyone."

— Saheeh International

قُلْ

Say

qul

إِنِّى

Indeed, I

innī

لَآ

(do) not

أَمْلِكُ

possess

amliku

لَكُمْ

for you

lakum

ضَرًّۭا

any harm

ḍarran

وَلَا

and not

walā

رَشَدًۭا

right path

rashadan

٢١

Say, "Indeed, I do not possess for you [the power of] harm or right direction."

— Saheeh International

قُلْ

Say

qul

إِنِّى

Indeed I

innī

لَن

never

lan

يُجِيرَنِى

can protect me

yujīranī

مِنَ

from

mina

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

أَحَدٌۭ

anyone

aḥadun

وَلَنْ

and never

walan

أَجِدَ

can I find

ajida

مِن

from

min

دُونِهِۦ

besides Him

dūnihi

مُلْتَحَدًا

any refuge

mul'taḥadan

٢٢

Say, "Indeed, there will never protect me from Allāh anyone [if I should disobey], nor will I find in other than Him a refuge.

— Saheeh International

إِلَّا

But

illā

بَلَـٰغًۭا

(the) notification

balāghan

مِّنَ

from

mina

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

وَرِسَـٰلَـٰتِهِۦ ۚ

and His Messages

warisālātihi

وَمَن

And whoever

waman

يَعْصِ

disobeys

yaʿṣi

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

وَرَسُولَهُۥ

and His Messenger

warasūlahu

فَإِنَّ

then indeed

fa-inna

لَهُۥ

for him

lahu

نَارَ

(is the) Fire

nāra

جَهَنَّمَ

(of) Hell

jahannama

خَـٰلِدِينَ

(they will) abide

khālidīna

فِيهَآ

therein

fīhā

أَبَدًا

forever

abadan

٢٣

But [I have for you] only notification from Allāh, and His messages." And whoever disobeys Allāh and His Messenger - then indeed, for him is the fire of Hell; they will abide therein forever.

— Saheeh International

حَتَّىٰٓ

Until

ḥattā

إِذَا

when

idhā

رَأَوْا۟

they see

ra-aw

مَا

what

يُوعَدُونَ

they are promised

yūʿadūna

فَسَيَعْلَمُونَ

then they will know

fasayaʿlamūna

مَنْ

who

man

أَضْعَفُ

(is) weaker

aḍʿafu

نَاصِرًۭا

(in) helpers

nāṣiran

وَأَقَلُّ

and fewer

wa-aqallu

عَدَدًۭا

(in) number

ʿadadan

٢٤

[The disbelievers continue] until, when they see that which they are promised, then they will know who is weaker in helpers and less in number.

— Saheeh International

قُلْ

Say

qul

إِنْ

Not

in

أَدْرِىٓ

I know

adrī

أَقَرِيبٌۭ

whether is near

aqarībun

مَّا

what

تُوعَدُونَ

you are promised

tūʿadūna

أَمْ

or (whether)

am

يَجْعَلُ

will appoint

yajʿalu

لَهُۥ

for it

lahu

رَبِّىٓ

my Lord

rabbī

أَمَدًا

a (distant) term

amadan

٢٥

Say, "I do not know if what you are promised is near or if my Lord will grant for it a [long] period."

— Saheeh International

عَـٰلِمُ

(The) All-Knower

ʿālimu

ٱلْغَيْبِ

(of) the unseen

l-ghaybi

فَلَا

so not

falā

يُظْهِرُ

He reveals

yuẓ'hiru

عَلَىٰ

from

ʿalā

غَيْبِهِۦٓ

His unseen

ghaybihi

أَحَدًا

(to) anyone

aḥadan

٢٦

[He is] Knower of the unseen, and He does not disclose His [knowledge of the] unseen to anyone

— Saheeh International

إِلَّا

Except

illā

مَنِ

whom

mani

ٱرْتَضَىٰ

He has approved

ir'taḍā

مِن

of

min

رَّسُولٍۢ

a Messenger

rasūlin

فَإِنَّهُۥ

and indeed, He

fa-innahu

يَسْلُكُ

makes to march

yasluku

مِنۢ

from

min

بَيْنِ

before

bayni

يَدَيْهِ

him

yadayhi

وَمِنْ

and from

wamin

خَلْفِهِۦ

behind him

khalfihi

رَصَدًۭا

a guard

raṣadan

٢٧

Except whom He has approved of messengers, and indeed, He sends before him [i.e., each messenger] and behind him observers1

— Saheeh International

لِّيَعْلَمَ

That He may make evident

liyaʿlama

أَن

that

an

قَدْ

indeed

qad

أَبْلَغُوا۟

they have conveyed

ablaghū

رِسَـٰلَـٰتِ

(the) Messages

risālāti

رَبِّهِمْ

(of) their Lord

rabbihim

وَأَحَاطَ

and He has encompassed

wa-aḥāṭa

بِمَا

what

bimā

لَدَيْهِمْ

(is) with them

ladayhim

وَأَحْصَىٰ

and He takes account

wa-aḥṣā

كُلَّ

(of) all

kulla

شَىْءٍ

things

shayin

عَدَدًۢا

(in) number

ʿadadan

٢٨

That he [i.e., Muḥammad (ﷺ)] may know1 that they have conveyed the messages of their Lord; and He has encompassed whatever is with them and has enumerated all things in number.

— Saheeh International
