الحاقة

ٱلْحَآقَّةُ

The Inevitable Reality

al-ḥāqatu

١

The Inevitable Reality -

— Saheeh International

مَا

What

ٱلْحَآقَّةُ

(is) the Inevitable Reality

l-ḥāqatu

٢

What is the Inevitable Reality?

— Saheeh International

وَمَآ

And what

wamā

أَدْرَىٰكَ

will make you know

adrāka

مَا

what

ٱلْحَآقَّةُ

(is) the Inevitable Reality

l-ḥāqatu

٣

And what can make you know what is the Inevitable Reality?

— Saheeh International

كَذَّبَتْ

Denied

kadhabat

ثَمُودُ

Thamud

thamūdu

وَعَادٌۢ

and Aad

waʿādun

بِٱلْقَارِعَةِ

the Striking Calamity

bil-qāriʿati

٤

Thamūd and ʿAad denied the Striking Calamity [i.e., the Resurrection].

— Saheeh International

فَأَمَّا

So as for

fa-ammā

ثَمُودُ

Thamud

thamūdu

فَأُهْلِكُوا۟

they were destroyed

fa-uh'likū

بِٱلطَّاغِيَةِ

by the overpowering (blast)

bil-ṭāghiyati

٥

So as for Thamūd, they were destroyed by the overpowering [blast].

— Saheeh International

وَأَمَّا

And as for

wa-ammā

عَادٌۭ

Aad

ʿādun

فَأُهْلِكُوا۟

they were destroyed

fa-uh'likū

بِرِيحٍۢ

by a wind

birīḥin

صَرْصَرٍ

screaming

ṣarṣarin

عَاتِيَةٍۢ

violent

ʿātiyatin

٦

And as for ʿAad, they were destroyed by a screaming,1 violent wind

— Saheeh International

سَخَّرَهَا

Which He imposed

sakharahā

عَلَيْهِمْ

upon them

ʿalayhim

سَبْعَ

(for) seven

sabʿa

لَيَالٍۢ

nights

layālin

وَثَمَـٰنِيَةَ

and eight

wathamāniyata

أَيَّامٍ

days

ayyāmin

حُسُومًۭا

(in) succession

ḥusūman

فَتَرَى

so you would see

fatarā

ٱلْقَوْمَ

the people

l-qawma

فِيهَا

therein

fīhā

صَرْعَىٰ

fallen

ṣarʿā

كَأَنَّهُمْ

as if they were

ka-annahum

أَعْجَازُ

trunks

aʿjāzu

نَخْلٍ

(of) date-palms

nakhlin

خَاوِيَةٍۢ

hollow

khāwiyatin

٧

Which He [i.e., Allāh] imposed upon them for seven nights and eight days in succession, so you would see the people therein fallen as if they were hollow trunks of palm trees.

— Saheeh International

فَهَلْ

Then do

fahal

تَرَىٰ

you see

tarā

لَهُم

of them

lahum

مِّنۢ

any

min

بَاقِيَةٍۢ

remains

bāqiyatin

٨

Then do you see of them any remains?

— Saheeh International

وَجَآءَ

And came

wajāa

فِرْعَوْنُ

Firaun

fir'ʿawnu

وَمَن

and (those)

waman

قَبْلَهُۥ

before him

qablahu

وَٱلْمُؤْتَفِكَـٰتُ

and the overturned cities

wal-mu'tafikātu

بِٱلْخَاطِئَةِ

with sin

bil-khāṭi-ati

٩

And there came Pharaoh and those before him and the overturned cities1 with sin.

— Saheeh International

فَعَصَوْا۟

And they disobeyed

faʿaṣaw

رَسُولَ

(the) Messenger

rasūla

رَبِّهِمْ

(of) their Lord

rabbihim

فَأَخَذَهُمْ

so He seized them

fa-akhadhahum

أَخْذَةًۭ

(with) a seizure

akhdhatan

رَّابِيَةً

exceeding

rābiyatan

١٠

And they disobeyed the messenger of their Lord, so He seized them with a seizure exceeding [in severity].

— Saheeh International

إِنَّا

Indeed, We

innā

لَمَّا

when

lammā

طَغَا

overflowed

ṭaghā

ٱلْمَآءُ

the water

l-māu

حَمَلْنَـٰكُمْ

We carried you

ḥamalnākum

فِى

in

ٱلْجَارِيَةِ

the sailing (ship)

l-jāriyati

١١

Indeed, when the water overflowed, We carried you [i.e., your ancestors] in the sailing ship1

— Saheeh International

لِنَجْعَلَهَا

That We might make it

linajʿalahā

لَكُمْ

for you

lakum

تَذْكِرَةًۭ

a reminder

tadhkiratan

وَتَعِيَهَآ

and would be conscious of it

wataʿiyahā

أُذُنٌۭ

an ear

udhunun

وَٰعِيَةٌۭ

conscious

wāʿiyatun

١٢

That We might make it for you a reminder and [that] a conscious ear would be conscious of it.

— Saheeh International

فَإِذَا

Then when

fa-idhā

نُفِخَ

is blown

nufikha

فِى

in

ٱلصُّورِ

the trumpet

l-ṣūri

نَفْخَةٌۭ

a blast

nafkhatun

وَٰحِدَةٌۭ

single

wāḥidatun

١٣

Then when the Horn is blown with one blast

— Saheeh International

وَحُمِلَتِ

And are lifted

waḥumilati

ٱلْأَرْضُ

the earth

l-arḍu

وَٱلْجِبَالُ

and the mountains

wal-jibālu

فَدُكَّتَا

and crushed

fadukkatā

دَكَّةًۭ

(with) a crushing

dakkatan

وَٰحِدَةًۭ

single

wāḥidatan

١٤

And the earth and the mountains are lifted and leveled with one blow [i.e., stroke] -

— Saheeh International

فَيَوْمَئِذٍۢ

Then (on) that Day

fayawma-idhin

وَقَعَتِ

will occur

waqaʿati

ٱلْوَاقِعَةُ

the Occurrence

l-wāqiʿatu

١٥

Then on that Day, the Occurrence [i.e., Resurrection] will occur,

— Saheeh International

وَٱنشَقَّتِ

And will split

wa-inshaqqati

ٱلسَّمَآءُ

the heaven

l-samāu

فَهِىَ

so it

fahiya

يَوْمَئِذٍۢ

(is on) that Day

yawma-idhin

وَاهِيَةٌۭ

frail

wāhiyatun

١٦

And the heaven will split [open], for that Day it is infirm.1

— Saheeh International

وَٱلْمَلَكُ

And the Angels

wal-malaku

عَلَىٰٓ

(will be) on

ʿalā

أَرْجَآئِهَا ۚ

its edges

arjāihā

وَيَحْمِلُ

and will bear

wayaḥmilu

عَرْشَ

(the) Throne

ʿarsha

رَبِّكَ

(of) your Lord

rabbika

فَوْقَهُمْ

above them

fawqahum

يَوْمَئِذٍۢ

that Day

yawma-idhin

ثَمَـٰنِيَةٌۭ

eight

thamāniyatun

١٧

And the angels are at its edges. And there will bear the Throne of your Lord above them, that Day, eight [of them].

— Saheeh International

يَوْمَئِذٍۢ

That Day

yawma-idhin

تُعْرَضُونَ

you will be exhibited

tuʿ'raḍūna

لَا

not

تَخْفَىٰ

will be hidden

takhfā

مِنكُمْ

among you

minkum

خَافِيَةٌۭ

any secret

khāfiyatun

١٨

That Day, you will be exhibited [for judgement]; not hidden among you is anything concealed.1

— Saheeh International

فَأَمَّا

Then as for

fa-ammā

مَنْ

(him) who

man

أُوتِىَ

is given

ūtiya

كِتَـٰبَهُۥ

his record

kitābahu

بِيَمِينِهِۦ

in his right hand

biyamīnihi

فَيَقُولُ

will say

fayaqūlu

هَآؤُمُ

Here

hāumu

ٱقْرَءُوا۟

read

iq'raū

كِتَـٰبِيَهْ

my record

kitābiyah

١٩

So as for he who is given his record in his right hand, he will say, "Here, read my record!

— Saheeh International

إِنِّى

Indeed, I

innī

ظَنَنتُ

was certain

ẓanantu

أَنِّى

that I

annī

مُلَـٰقٍ

(will) meet

mulāqin

حِسَابِيَهْ

my account

ḥisābiyah

٢٠

Indeed, I was certain that I would be meeting my account."

— Saheeh International

فَهُوَ

So he

fahuwa

فِى

(will be) in

عِيشَةٍۢ

a life

ʿīshatin

رَّاضِيَةٍۢ

pleasant

rāḍiyatin

٢١

So he will be in a pleasant life -

— Saheeh International

فِى

In

جَنَّةٍ

a Garden

jannatin

عَالِيَةٍۢ

elevated

ʿāliyatin

٢٢

In an elevated garden,

— Saheeh International

قُطُوفُهَا

Its clusters of fruits

quṭūfuhā

دَانِيَةٌۭ

hanging near

dāniyatun

٢٣

Its [fruit] to be picked hanging near.

— Saheeh International

كُلُوا۟

Eat

kulū

وَٱشْرَبُوا۟

and drink

wa-ish'rabū

هَنِيٓـًٔۢا

(in) satisfaction

hanīan

بِمَآ

for what

bimā

أَسْلَفْتُمْ

you sent before you

aslaftum

فِى

in

ٱلْأَيَّامِ

the days

l-ayāmi

ٱلْخَالِيَةِ

past

l-khāliyati

٢٤

[They will be told], "Eat and drink in satisfaction for what you put forth1 in the days past."

— Saheeh International

وَأَمَّا

But as for

wa-ammā

مَنْ

(him) who

man

أُوتِىَ

is given

ūtiya

كِتَـٰبَهُۥ

his record

kitābahu

بِشِمَالِهِۦ

in his left hand

bishimālihi

فَيَقُولُ

will say

fayaqūlu

يَـٰلَيْتَنِى

O! I wish

yālaytanī

لَمْ

not

lam

أُوتَ

I had been given

ūta

كِتَـٰبِيَهْ

my record

kitābiyah

٢٥

But as for he who is given his record in his left hand, he will say, "Oh, I wish I had not been given my record

— Saheeh International

وَلَمْ

And not

walam

أَدْرِ

I had known

adri

مَا

what

حِسَابِيَهْ

(is) my account

ḥisābiyah

٢٦

And had not known what is my account.

— Saheeh International

يَـٰلَيْتَهَا

O! I wish it

yālaytahā

كَانَتِ

had been

kānati

ٱلْقَاضِيَةَ

the end

l-qāḍiyata

٢٧

I wish it [i.e., my death] had been the decisive one.1

— Saheeh International

مَآ

Not

أَغْنَىٰ

has availed

aghnā

عَنِّى

me

ʿannī

مَالِيَهْ ۜ

my wealth

māliyah

٢٨

My wealth has not availed me.

— Saheeh International

هَلَكَ

Is gone

halaka

عَنِّى

from me

ʿannī

سُلْطَـٰنِيَهْ

my authority

sul'ṭāniyah

٢٩

Gone from me is my authority."1

— Saheeh International

خُذُوهُ

Seize him

khudhūhu

فَغُلُّوهُ

and shackle him

faghullūhu

٣٠

[Allāh will say], "Seize him and shackle him.

— Saheeh International

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

ٱلْجَحِيمَ

(into) the Hellfire

l-jaḥīma

صَلُّوهُ

burn him

ṣallūhu

٣١

Then into Hellfire drive him.

— Saheeh International

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

فِى

into

سِلْسِلَةٍۢ

a chain

sil'silatin

ذَرْعُهَا

its length

dharʿuhā

سَبْعُونَ

(is) seventy

sabʿūna

ذِرَاعًۭا

cubits

dhirāʿan

فَٱسْلُكُوهُ

insert him

fa-us'lukūhu

٣٢

Then into a chain whose length is seventy cubits insert him."

— Saheeh International

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed, he

innahu

كَانَ

was

kāna

لَا

not

يُؤْمِنُ

believing

yu'minu

بِٱللَّهِ

in Allah

bil-lahi

ٱلْعَظِيمِ

the Most Great

l-ʿaẓīmi

٣٣

Indeed, he did not used to believe in Allāh, the Most Great,

— Saheeh International

وَلَا

And (did) not

walā

يَحُضُّ

feel the urge

yaḥuḍḍu

عَلَىٰ

on

ʿalā

طَعَامِ

(the) feeding

ṭaʿāmi

ٱلْمِسْكِينِ

(of) the poor

l-mis'kīni

٣٤

Nor did he encourage the feeding of the poor.

— Saheeh International

فَلَيْسَ

So not

falaysa

لَهُ

for him

lahu

ٱلْيَوْمَ

today

l-yawma

هَـٰهُنَا

here

hāhunā

حَمِيمٌۭ

any devoted friend

ḥamīmun

٣٥

So there is not for him here this Day any devoted friend

— Saheeh International

وَلَا

And not

walā

طَعَامٌ

any food

ṭaʿāmun

إِلَّا

except

illā

مِنْ

from

min

غِسْلِينٍۢ

(the) discharge of wounds

ghis'līnin

٣٦

Nor any food except from the discharge of wounds;

— Saheeh International

لَّا

Not

يَأْكُلُهُۥٓ

will eat it

yakuluhu

إِلَّا

except

illā

ٱلْخَـٰطِـُٔونَ

the sinners

l-khāṭiūna

٣٧

None will eat it except the sinners.

— Saheeh International

فَلَآ

But nay

falā

أُقْسِمُ

I swear

uq'simu

بِمَا

by what

bimā

تُبْصِرُونَ

you see

tub'ṣirūna

٣٨

So I swear by what you see

— Saheeh International

وَمَا

And what

wamā

لَا

not

تُبْصِرُونَ

you see

tub'ṣirūna

٣٩

And what you do not see

— Saheeh International

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed, it (is)

innahu

لَقَوْلُ

surely (the) Word

laqawlu

رَسُولٍۢ

(of) a Messenger

rasūlin

كَرِيمٍۢ

noble

karīmin

٤٠

[That] indeed, it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is the word of a noble Messenger.

— Saheeh International

وَمَا

And not

wamā

هُوَ

it

huwa

بِقَوْلِ

(is the) word

biqawli

شَاعِرٍۢ ۚ

(of) a poet

shāʿirin

قَلِيلًۭا

little

qalīlan

مَّا

(is) what

تُؤْمِنُونَ

you believe

tu'minūna

٤١

And it is not the word of a poet; little do you believe.

— Saheeh International

وَلَا

And not

walā

بِقَوْلِ

(it is the) word

biqawli

كَاهِنٍۢ ۚ

(of) a soothsayer

kāhinin

قَلِيلًۭا

little

qalīlan

مَّا

(is) what

تَذَكَّرُونَ

you take heed

tadhakkarūna

٤٢

Nor the word of a soothsayer; little do you remember.

— Saheeh International

تَنزِيلٌۭ

(It is) a revelation

tanzīlun

مِّن

from

min

رَّبِّ

(the) Lord

rabbi

ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

(of) the worlds

l-ʿālamīna

٤٣

[It is] a revelation from the Lord of the worlds.

— Saheeh International

وَلَوْ

And if

walaw

تَقَوَّلَ

he (had) fabricated

taqawwala

عَلَيْنَا

against Us

ʿalaynā

بَعْضَ

some

baʿḍa

ٱلْأَقَاوِيلِ

sayings

l-aqāwīli

٤٤

And if he [i.e., Muḥammad] had made up about Us some [false] sayings,

— Saheeh International

لَأَخَذْنَا

Certainly We (would) have seized

la-akhadhnā

مِنْهُ

him

min'hu

بِٱلْيَمِينِ

by the right hand

bil-yamīni

٤٥

We would have seized him by the right hand;1

— Saheeh International

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

لَقَطَعْنَا

certainly We (would) have cut off

laqaṭaʿnā

مِنْهُ

from him

min'hu

ٱلْوَتِينَ

the aorta

l-watīna

٤٦

Then We would have cut from him the aorta.1

— Saheeh International

فَمَا

And not

famā

مِنكُم

from you

minkum

مِّنْ

any

min

أَحَدٍ

one

aḥadin

عَنْهُ

[from him]

ʿanhu

حَـٰجِزِينَ

(who could) prevent (it)

ḥājizīna

٤٧

And there is no one of you who could prevent [Us] from him.

— Saheeh International

وَإِنَّهُۥ

And indeed, it

wa-innahu

لَتَذْكِرَةٌۭ

(is) surely a reminder

latadhkiratun

لِّلْمُتَّقِينَ

for the Allah-fearing

lil'muttaqīna

٤٨

And indeed, it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is a reminder for the righteous.

— Saheeh International

وَإِنَّا

And indeed, We

wa-innā

لَنَعْلَمُ

surely know

lanaʿlamu

أَنَّ

that

anna

مِنكُم

among you

minkum

مُّكَذِّبِينَ

(are) deniers

mukadhibīna

٤٩

And indeed, We know that among you are deniers.

— Saheeh International

وَإِنَّهُۥ

And indeed, it

wa-innahu

لَحَسْرَةٌ

(is) surely a regret

laḥasratun

عَلَى

upon

ʿalā

ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ

the disbelievers

l-kāfirīna

٥٠

And indeed, it will be [a cause of] regret upon the disbelievers.

— Saheeh International

وَإِنَّهُۥ

And indeed, it (is)

wa-innahu

لَحَقُّ

surely (the) truth

laḥaqqu

ٱلْيَقِينِ

(of) certainty

l-yaqīni

٥١

And indeed, it is the truth of certainty.

— Saheeh International

فَسَبِّحْ

So glorify

fasabbiḥ

بِٱسْمِ

(the) name

bi-is'mi

رَبِّكَ

(of) your Lord

rabbika

ٱلْعَظِيمِ

the Most Great

l-ʿaẓīmi

٥٢

So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great.

— Saheeh International
