The Reality

الحاقة
مَا What mā (is) the Inevitable Reality l-ḥāqatu
What is the Inevitable Reality?
وَمَآ And what wamā will make you know adrāka what mā (is) the Inevitable Reality l-ḥāqatu
And what can make you know what is the Inevitable Reality?
كَذَّبَتْ Denied kadhabat Thamud thamūdu and Aad waʿādun the Striking Calamity bil-qāriʿati
Thamūd and ʿAad denied the Striking Calamity [i.e., the Resurrection].
فَأَمَّا So as for fa-ammā Thamud thamūdu they were destroyed fa-uh'likū by the overpowering (blast) bil-ṭāghiyati
So as for Thamūd, they were destroyed by the overpowering [blast].
وَأَمَّا And as for wa-ammā Aad ʿādun they were destroyed fa-uh'likū by a wind birīḥin screaming ṣarṣarin violent ʿātiyatin
And as for ʿAad, they were destroyed by a screaming,1 violent wind
سَخَّرَهَا Which He imposed sakharahā upon them ʿalayhim (for) seven sabʿa nights layālin and eight wathamāniyata days ayyāmin (in) succession ḥusūman so you would see fatarā the people l-qawma therein fīhā fallen ṣarʿā as if they were ka-annahum trunks aʿjāzu (of) date-palms nakhlin hollow khāwiyatin
Which He [i.e., Allāh] imposed upon them for seven nights and eight days in succession, so you would see the people therein fallen as if they were hollow trunks of palm trees.
فَهَلْ Then do fahal you see tarā of them lahum any min remains bāqiyatin
Then do you see of them any remains?
وَجَآءَ And came wajāa Firaun fir'ʿawnu and (those) waman before him qablahu and the overturned cities wal-mu'tafikātu with sin bil-khāṭi-ati
And there came Pharaoh and those before him and the overturned cities1 with sin.
فَعَصَوْا۟ And they disobeyed faʿaṣaw (the) Messenger rasūla (of) their Lord rabbihim so He seized them fa-akhadhahum (with) a seizure akhdhatan exceeding rābiyatan
And they disobeyed the messenger of their Lord, so He seized them with a seizure exceeding [in severity].
إِنَّا Indeed, We innā when lammā overflowed ṭaghā the water l-māu We carried you ḥamalnākum in fī the sailing (ship) l-jāriyati
Indeed, when the water overflowed, We carried you [i.e., your ancestors] in the sailing ship1
لِنَجْعَلَهَا That We might make it linajʿalahā for you lakum a reminder tadhkiratan and would be conscious of it wataʿiyahā an ear udhunun conscious wāʿiyatun
That We might make it for you a reminder and [that] a conscious ear would be conscious of it.
فَإِذَا Then when fa-idhā is blown nufikha in fī the trumpet l-ṣūri a blast nafkhatun single wāḥidatun
Then when the Horn is blown with one blast
وَحُمِلَتِ And are lifted waḥumilati the earth l-arḍu and the mountains wal-jibālu and crushed fadukkatā (with) a crushing dakkatan single wāḥidatan
And the earth and the mountains are lifted and leveled with one blow [i.e., stroke] -
فَيَوْمَئِذٍۢ Then (on) that Day fayawma-idhin will occur waqaʿati the Occurrence l-wāqiʿatu
Then on that Day, the Occurrence [i.e., Resurrection] will occur,
وَٱنشَقَّتِ And will split wa-inshaqqati the heaven l-samāu so it fahiya (is on) that Day yawma-idhin frail wāhiyatun
And the heaven will split [open], for that Day it is infirm.1
وَٱلْمَلَكُ And the Angels wal-malaku (will be) on ʿalā its edges arjāihā and will bear wayaḥmilu (the) Throne ʿarsha (of) your Lord rabbika above them fawqahum that Day yawma-idhin eight thamāniyatun
And the angels are at its edges. And there will bear the Throne of your Lord above them, that Day, eight [of them].
يَوْمَئِذٍۢ That Day yawma-idhin you will be exhibited tuʿ'raḍūna not lā will be hidden takhfā among you minkum any secret khāfiyatun
That Day, you will be exhibited [for judgement]; not hidden among you is anything concealed.1
فَأَمَّا Then as for fa-ammā (him) who man is given ūtiya his record kitābahu in his right hand biyamīnihi will say fayaqūlu Here hāumu read iq'raū my record kitābiyah
So as for he who is given his record in his right hand, he will say, "Here, read my record!
إِنِّى Indeed, I innī was certain ẓanantu that I annī (will) meet mulāqin my account ḥisābiyah
Indeed, I was certain that I would be meeting my account."
فَهُوَ So he fahuwa (will be) in fī a life ʿīshatin pleasant rāḍiyatin
So he will be in a pleasant life -
قُطُوفُهَا Its clusters of fruits quṭūfuhā hanging near dāniyatun
Its [fruit] to be picked hanging near.
كُلُوا۟ Eat kulū and drink wa-ish'rabū (in) satisfaction hanīan for what bimā you sent before you aslaftum in fī the days l-ayāmi past l-khāliyati
[They will be told], "Eat and drink in satisfaction for what you put forth1 in the days past."
وَأَمَّا But as for wa-ammā (him) who man is given ūtiya his record kitābahu in his left hand bishimālihi will say fayaqūlu O! I wish yālaytanī not lam I had been given ūta my record kitābiyah
But as for he who is given his record in his left hand, he will say, "Oh, I wish I had not been given my record
وَلَمْ And not walam I had known adri what mā (is) my account ḥisābiyah
And had not known what is my account.
يَـٰلَيْتَهَا O! I wish it yālaytahā had been kānati the end l-qāḍiyata
I wish it [i.e., my death] had been the decisive one.1
مَآ Not mā has availed aghnā me ʿannī my wealth māliyah
My wealth has not availed me.
هَلَكَ Is gone halaka from me ʿannī my authority sul'ṭāniyah
Gone from me is my authority."1
خُذُوهُ Seize him khudhūhu and shackle him faghullūhu
[Allāh will say], "Seize him and shackle him.
ثُمَّ Then thumma (into) the Hellfire l-jaḥīma burn him ṣallūhu
Then into Hellfire drive him.
ثُمَّ Then thumma into fī a chain sil'silatin its length dharʿuhā (is) seventy sabʿūna cubits dhirāʿan insert him fa-us'lukūhu
Then into a chain whose length is seventy cubits insert him."
إِنَّهُۥ Indeed, he innahu was kāna not lā believing yu'minu in Allah bil-lahi the Most Great l-ʿaẓīmi
Indeed, he did not used to believe in Allāh, the Most Great,
وَلَا And (did) not walā feel the urge yaḥuḍḍu on ʿalā (the) feeding ṭaʿāmi (of) the poor l-mis'kīni
Nor did he encourage the feeding of the poor.
فَلَيْسَ So not falaysa for him lahu today l-yawma here hāhunā any devoted friend ḥamīmun
So there is not for him here this Day any devoted friend
وَلَا And not walā any food ṭaʿāmun except illā from min (the) discharge of wounds ghis'līnin
Nor any food except from the discharge of wounds;
لَّا Not lā will eat it yakuluhu except illā the sinners l-khāṭiūna
None will eat it except the sinners.
فَلَآ But nay falā I swear uq'simu by what bimā you see tub'ṣirūna
So I swear by what you see
إِنَّهُۥ Indeed, it (is) innahu surely (the) Word laqawlu (of) a Messenger rasūlin noble karīmin
[That] indeed, it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is the word of a noble Messenger.
وَمَا And not wamā it huwa (is the) word biqawli (of) a poet shāʿirin little qalīlan (is) what mā you believe tu'minūna
And it is not the word of a poet; little do you believe.
وَلَا And not walā (it is the) word biqawli (of) a soothsayer kāhinin little qalīlan (is) what mā you take heed tadhakkarūna
Nor the word of a soothsayer; little do you remember.
تَنزِيلٌۭ (It is) a revelation tanzīlun from min (the) Lord rabbi (of) the worlds l-ʿālamīna
[It is] a revelation from the Lord of the worlds.
وَلَوْ And if walaw he (had) fabricated taqawwala against Us ʿalaynā some baʿḍa sayings l-aqāwīli
And if he [i.e., Muḥammad] had made up about Us some [false] sayings,
لَأَخَذْنَا Certainly We (would) have seized la-akhadhnā him min'hu by the right hand bil-yamīni
We would have seized him by the right hand;1
ثُمَّ Then thumma certainly We (would) have cut off laqaṭaʿnā from him min'hu the aorta l-watīna
Then We would have cut from him the aorta.1
فَمَا And not famā from you minkum any min one aḥadin [from him] ʿanhu (who could) prevent (it) ḥājizīna
And there is no one of you who could prevent [Us] from him.
وَإِنَّهُۥ And indeed, it wa-innahu (is) surely a reminder latadhkiratun for the Allah-fearing lil'muttaqīna
And indeed, it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is a reminder for the righteous.
وَإِنَّا And indeed, We wa-innā surely know lanaʿlamu that anna among you minkum (are) deniers mukadhibīna
And indeed, We know that among you are deniers.
وَإِنَّهُۥ And indeed, it wa-innahu (is) surely a regret laḥasratun upon ʿalā the disbelievers l-kāfirīna
And indeed, it will be [a cause of] regret upon the disbelievers.
وَإِنَّهُۥ And indeed, it (is) wa-innahu surely (the) truth laḥaqqu (of) certainty l-yaqīni
And indeed, it is the truth of certainty.
فَسَبِّحْ So glorify fasabbiḥ (the) name bi-is'mi (of) your Lord rabbika the Most Great l-ʿaẓīmi
So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great.
