نٓ ۚ

Nun

noon

وَٱلْقَلَمِ

By the pen

wal-qalami

وَمَا

and what

wamā

يَسْطُرُونَ

they write

yasṭurūna

١

Nūn.1 By the pen and what they inscribe,

— Saheeh International

مَآ

Not

أَنتَ

you (are)

anta

بِنِعْمَةِ

by (the) Grace

biniʿ'mati

رَبِّكَ

(of) your Lord

rabbika

بِمَجْنُونٍۢ

a madman

bimajnūnin

٢

You are not, [O Muḥammad], by the favor of your Lord, a madman.

— Saheeh International

وَإِنَّ

And indeed

wa-inna

لَكَ

for you

laka

لَأَجْرًا

surely (is) a reward

la-ajran

غَيْرَ

without

ghayra

مَمْنُونٍۢ

end

mamnūnin

٣

And indeed, for you is a reward uninterrupted.

— Saheeh International

وَإِنَّكَ

And indeed, you

wa-innaka

لَعَلَىٰ

surely (are)

laʿalā

خُلُقٍ

(of) a moral character

khuluqin

عَظِيمٍۢ

great

ʿaẓīmin

٤

And indeed, you are of a great moral character.

— Saheeh International

فَسَتُبْصِرُ

So you will see

fasatub'ṣiru

وَيُبْصِرُونَ

and they will see

wayub'ṣirūna

٥

So you will see and they will see.

— Saheeh International

بِأَييِّكُمُ

Which of you

bi-ayyikumu

ٱلْمَفْتُونُ

(is) the afflicted one

l-maftūnu

٦

Which of you is the afflicted [by a devil].

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

رَبَّكَ

your Lord

rabbaka

هُوَ

He

huwa

أَعْلَمُ

(is) most knowing

aʿlamu

بِمَن

of (he) who

biman

ضَلَّ

has strayed

ḍalla

عَن

from

ʿan

سَبِيلِهِۦ

His way

sabīlihi

وَهُوَ

and He

wahuwa

أَعْلَمُ

(is) most knowing

aʿlamu

بِٱلْمُهْتَدِينَ

of the guided ones

bil-muh'tadīna

٧

Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has gone astray from His way, and He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided.

— Saheeh International

فَلَا

So (do) not

falā

تُطِعِ

obey

tuṭiʿi

ٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَ

the deniers

l-mukadhibīna

٨

Then do not obey the deniers.

— Saheeh International

وَدُّوا۟

They wish

waddū

لَوْ

that

law

تُدْهِنُ

you should compromise

tud'hinu

فَيُدْهِنُونَ

so they would compromise

fayud'hinūna

٩

They wish that you would soften [in your position], so they would soften [toward you].

— Saheeh International

وَلَا

And (do) not

walā

تُطِعْ

obey

tuṭiʿ

كُلَّ

every

kulla

حَلَّافٍۢ

habitual swearer

ḥallāfin

مَّهِينٍ

worthless

mahīnin

١٠

And do not obey every worthless habitual swearer

— Saheeh International

هَمَّازٍۢ

Defamer

hammāzin

مَّشَّآءٍۭ

going about

mashāin

بِنَمِيمٍۢ

with malicious gossip

binamīmin

١١

[And] scorner, going about with malicious gossip -

— Saheeh International

مَّنَّاعٍۢ

A preventer

mannāʿin

لِّلْخَيْرِ

of (the) good

lil'khayri

مُعْتَدٍ

transgressor

muʿ'tadin

أَثِيمٍ

sinful

athīmin

١٢

A preventer of good, transgressing and sinful,

— Saheeh International

عُتُلٍّۭ

Cruel

ʿutullin

بَعْدَ

after

baʿda

ذَٰلِكَ

(all) that

dhālika

زَنِيمٍ

utterly useless

zanīmin

١٣

Cruel, moreover, and an illegitimate pretender.1

— Saheeh International

أَن

Because

an

كَانَ

(he) is

kāna

ذَا

a possessor

dhā

مَالٍۢ

(of) wealth

mālin

وَبَنِينَ

and children

wabanīna

١٤

Because he is a possessor of wealth and children,

— Saheeh International

إِذَا

When

idhā

تُتْلَىٰ

are recited

tut'lā

عَلَيْهِ

to him

ʿalayhi

ءَايَـٰتُنَا

Our Verses

āyātunā

قَالَ

he says

qāla

أَسَـٰطِيرُ

Stories

asāṭīru

ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ

(of) the former (people)

l-awalīna

١٥

When Our verses are recited to him, he says, "Legends of the former peoples."

— Saheeh International

سَنَسِمُهُۥ

We will brand him

sanasimuhu

عَلَى

on

ʿalā

ٱلْخُرْطُومِ

the snout

l-khur'ṭūmi

١٦

We will brand him upon the snout.1

— Saheeh International

إِنَّا

Indeed, We

innā

بَلَوْنَـٰهُمْ

have tried them

balawnāhum

كَمَا

as

kamā

بَلَوْنَآ

We tried

balawnā

أَصْحَـٰبَ

(the) companions

aṣḥāba

ٱلْجَنَّةِ

(of) the garden

l-janati

إِذْ

when

idh

أَقْسَمُوا۟

they swore

aqsamū

لَيَصْرِمُنَّهَا

to pluck its fruit

layaṣrimunnahā

مُصْبِحِينَ

(in the) morning

muṣ'biḥīna

١٧

Indeed, We have tried them as We tried the companions of the garden, when they swore to cut its fruit in the [early] morning

— Saheeh International

وَلَا

And not

walā

يَسْتَثْنُونَ

making exception

yastathnūna

١٨

Without making exception.1

— Saheeh International

فَطَافَ

So there came

faṭāfa

عَلَيْهَا

upon it

ʿalayhā

طَآئِفٌۭ

a visitation

ṭāifun

مِّن

from

min

رَّبِّكَ

your Lord

rabbika

وَهُمْ

while they

wahum

نَآئِمُونَ

were asleep

nāimūna

١٩

So there came upon it [i.e., the garden] an affliction from your Lord while they were asleep.

— Saheeh International

فَأَصْبَحَتْ

So it became

fa-aṣbaḥat

كَٱلصَّرِيمِ

as if reaped

kal-ṣarīmi

٢٠

And it became as though reaped.

— Saheeh International

فَتَنَادَوْا۟

And they called one another

fatanādaw

مُصْبِحِينَ

(at) morning

muṣ'biḥīna

٢١

And they called one another at morning,

— Saheeh International

أَنِ

That

ani

ٱغْدُوا۟

Go early

igh'dū

عَلَىٰ

to

ʿalā

حَرْثِكُمْ

your crop

ḥarthikum

إِن

if

in

كُنتُمْ

you would

kuntum

صَـٰرِمِينَ

pluck (the) fruit

ṣārimīna

٢٢

[Saying], "Go early to your crop if you would cut the fruit."

— Saheeh International

فَٱنطَلَقُوا۟

So they went

fa-inṭalaqū

وَهُمْ

while they

wahum

يَتَخَـٰفَتُونَ

lowered (their) voices

yatakhāfatūna

٢٣

So they set out, while lowering their voices,

— Saheeh International

أَن

That

an

لَّا

Not

يَدْخُلَنَّهَا

will enter it

yadkhulannahā

ٱلْيَوْمَ

today

l-yawma

عَلَيْكُم

upon you

ʿalaykum

مِّسْكِينٌۭ

any poor person

mis'kīnun

٢٤

[Saying], "There will surely not enter it today upon you [any] poor person."

— Saheeh International

وَغَدَوْا۟

And they went early

waghadaw

عَلَىٰ

with

ʿalā

حَرْدٍۢ

determination

ḥardin

قَـٰدِرِينَ

able

qādirīna

٢٥

And they went early in determination, [assuming themselves] able.1

— Saheeh International

فَلَمَّا

But when

falammā

رَأَوْهَا

they saw it

ra-awhā

قَالُوٓا۟

they said

qālū

إِنَّا

Indeed, we

innā

لَضَآلُّونَ

(are) surely lost

laḍāllūna

٢٦

But when they saw it, they said, "Indeed, we are lost;

— Saheeh International

بَلْ

Nay

bal

نَحْنُ

We

naḥnu

مَحْرُومُونَ

(are) deprived

maḥrūmūna

٢٧

Rather, we have been deprived."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

Said

qāla

أَوْسَطُهُمْ

(the) most moderate of them

awsaṭuhum

أَلَمْ

Did not

alam

أَقُل

I tell

aqul

لَّكُمْ

you

lakum

لَوْلَا

'Why not

lawlā

تُسَبِّحُونَ

you glorify (Allah)?'

tusabbiḥūna

٢٨

The most moderate of them said, "Did I not say to you, 'Why do you not exalt [Allāh]?'"1

— Saheeh International

قَالُوا۟

They said

qālū

سُبْحَـٰنَ

Glory be

sub'ḥāna

رَبِّنَآ

(to) our Lord

rabbinā

إِنَّا

Indeed, we

innā

كُنَّا

[we] were

kunnā

ظَـٰلِمِينَ

wrongdoers

ẓālimīna

٢٩

They said, "Exalted is our Lord! Indeed, we were wrongdoers."

— Saheeh International

فَأَقْبَلَ

Then approached

fa-aqbala

بَعْضُهُمْ

some of them

baʿḍuhum

عَلَىٰ

to

ʿalā

بَعْضٍۢ

others

baʿḍin

يَتَلَـٰوَمُونَ

blaming each other

yatalāwamūna

٣٠

Then they approached one another, blaming each other.

— Saheeh International

قَالُوا۟

They said

qālū

يَـٰوَيْلَنَآ

O woe to us

yāwaylanā

إِنَّا

Indeed, we

innā

كُنَّا

[we] were

kunnā

طَـٰغِينَ

transgressors

ṭāghīna

٣١

They said, "O woe to us; indeed we were transgressors.

— Saheeh International

عَسَىٰ

Perhaps

ʿasā

رَبُّنَآ

our Lord

rabbunā

أَن

[that]

an

يُبْدِلَنَا

will substitute for us

yub'dilanā

خَيْرًۭا

a better

khayran

مِّنْهَآ

than it

min'hā

إِنَّآ

Indeed, we

innā

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

رَبِّنَا

our Lord

rabbinā

رَٰغِبُونَ

turn devoutly

rāghibūna

٣٢

Perhaps our Lord will substitute for us [one] better than it. Indeed, we are toward our Lord desirous."1

— Saheeh International

كَذَٰلِكَ

Such

kadhālika

ٱلْعَذَابُ ۖ

(is) the punishment

l-ʿadhābu

وَلَعَذَابُ

And surely the punishment

walaʿadhābu

ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ

(of) the Hereafter

l-ākhirati

أَكْبَرُ ۚ

(is) greater

akbaru

لَوْ

if

law

كَانُوا۟

they

kānū

يَعْلَمُونَ

know

yaʿlamūna

٣٣

Such is the punishment [of this world]. And the punishment of the Hereafter is greater, if they only knew.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

لِلْمُتَّقِينَ

for the righteous

lil'muttaqīna

عِندَ

with

ʿinda

رَبِّهِمْ

their Lord

rabbihim

جَنَّـٰتِ

(are) Gardens

jannāti

ٱلنَّعِيمِ

(of) Delight

l-naʿīmi

٣٤

Indeed, for the righteous with their Lord are the Gardens of Pleasure.

— Saheeh International

أَفَنَجْعَلُ

Then will We treat

afanajʿalu

ٱلْمُسْلِمِينَ

the Muslims

l-mus'limīna

كَٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ

like the criminals

kal-muj'rimīna

٣٥

Then will We treat the Muslims like the criminals?

— Saheeh International

مَا

What

لَكُمْ

(is) for you

lakum

كَيْفَ

How

kayfa

تَحْكُمُونَ

(do) you judge

taḥkumūna

٣٦

What is [the matter] with you? How do you judge?

— Saheeh International

أَمْ

Or

am

لَكُمْ

(is) for you

lakum

كِتَـٰبٌۭ

a book

kitābun

فِيهِ

wherein

fīhi

تَدْرُسُونَ

you learn

tadrusūna

٣٧

Or do you have a scripture in which you learn

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

لَكُمْ

for you

lakum

فِيهِ

in it

fīhi

لَمَا

what

lamā

تَخَيَّرُونَ

you choose

takhayyarūna

٣٨

That indeed for you is whatever you choose?

— Saheeh International

أَمْ

Or

am

لَكُمْ

for you

lakum

أَيْمَـٰنٌ

oaths

aymānun

عَلَيْنَا

from us

ʿalaynā

بَـٰلِغَةٌ

reaching

bālighatun

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

يَوْمِ

(the) Day

yawmi

ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ ۙ

(of) the Resurrection

l-qiyāmati

إِنَّ

indeed

inna

لَكُمْ

for you

lakum

لَمَا

(is) what

lamā

تَحْكُمُونَ

you judge

taḥkumūna

٣٩

Or do you have oaths [binding] upon Us, extending until the Day of Resurrection, that indeed for you is whatever you judge?

— Saheeh International

سَلْهُمْ

Ask them

salhum

أَيُّهُم

which of them

ayyuhum

بِذَٰلِكَ

for that

bidhālika

زَعِيمٌ

(is) responsible

zaʿīmun

٤٠

Ask them which of them, for that [claim], is responsible.

— Saheeh International

أَمْ

Or

am

لَهُمْ

(are) for them

lahum

شُرَكَآءُ

partners

shurakāu

فَلْيَأْتُوا۟

Then let them bring

falyatū

بِشُرَكَآئِهِمْ

their partners

bishurakāihim

إِن

if

in

كَانُوا۟

they are

kānū

صَـٰدِقِينَ

truthful

ṣādiqīna

٤١

Or do they have partners?1 Then let them bring their partners, if they should be truthful.

— Saheeh International

يَوْمَ

(The) Day

yawma

يُكْشَفُ

will be uncovered

yuk'shafu

عَن

from

ʿan

سَاقٍۢ

the shin

sāqin

وَيُدْعَوْنَ

and they will be called

wayud'ʿawna

إِلَى

to

ilā

ٱلسُّجُودِ

prostrate

l-sujūdi

فَلَا

but not

falā

يَسْتَطِيعُونَ

they will be able

yastaṭīʿūna

٤٢

The Day the shin will be uncovered1 and they are invited to prostration but they [i.e., the disbelievers] will not be able,

— Saheeh International

خَـٰشِعَةً

Humbled

khāshiʿatan

أَبْصَـٰرُهُمْ

their eyes

abṣāruhum

تَرْهَقُهُمْ

will cover them

tarhaquhum

ذِلَّةٌۭ ۖ

humiliation

dhillatun

وَقَدْ

And indeed

waqad

كَانُوا۟

they were

kānū

يُدْعَوْنَ

called

yud'ʿawna

إِلَى

to

ilā

ٱلسُّجُودِ

prostrate

l-sujūdi

وَهُمْ

while they

wahum

سَـٰلِمُونَ

(were) sound

sālimūna

٤٣

Their eyes humbled, humiliation will cover them. And they used to be invited to prostration while they were sound.1

— Saheeh International

فَذَرْنِى

So leave Me

fadharnī

وَمَن

and whoever

waman

يُكَذِّبُ

denies

yukadhibu

بِهَـٰذَا

this

bihādhā

ٱلْحَدِيثِ ۖ

Statement

l-ḥadīthi

سَنَسْتَدْرِجُهُم

We will progressively lead them

sanastadrijuhum

مِّنْ

from

min

حَيْثُ

where

ḥaythu

لَا

not

يَعْلَمُونَ

they know

yaʿlamūna

٤٤

So leave Me, [O Muḥammad], with [the matter of] whoever denies this statement [i.e., the Qur’ān]. We will progressively lead them [to punishment] from where they do not know.1

— Saheeh International

وَأُمْلِى

And I will give respite

wa-um'lī

لَهُمْ ۚ

to them

lahum

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

كَيْدِى

My plan

kaydī

مَتِينٌ

(is) firm

matīnun

٤٥

And I will give them time. Indeed, My plan is firm.

— Saheeh International

أَمْ

Or

am

تَسْـَٔلُهُمْ

you ask them

tasaluhum

أَجْرًۭا

a payment

ajran

فَهُم

so they

fahum

مِّن

from

min

مَّغْرَمٍۢ

(the) debt

maghramin

مُّثْقَلُونَ

(are) burdened

muth'qalūna

٤٦

Or do you ask of them a payment, so they are by debt burdened down?

— Saheeh International

أَمْ

Or

am

عِندَهُمُ

(is) with them

ʿindahumu

ٱلْغَيْبُ

the unseen

l-ghaybu

فَهُمْ

so they

fahum

يَكْتُبُونَ

write it

yaktubūna

٤٧

Or have they [knowledge of] the unseen, so they write [it] down?

— Saheeh International

فَٱصْبِرْ

So be patient

fa-iṣ'bir

لِحُكْمِ

for (the) decision

liḥuk'mi

رَبِّكَ

(of) your Lord

rabbika

وَلَا

and (do) not

walā

تَكُن

be

takun

كَصَاحِبِ

like (the) companion

kaṣāḥibi

ٱلْحُوتِ

(of) the fish

l-ḥūti

إِذْ

when

idh

نَادَىٰ

he called out

nādā

وَهُوَ

while he

wahuwa

مَكْظُومٌۭ

(was) distressed

makẓūmun

٤٨

Then be patient for the decision of your Lord, [O Muḥammad], and be not like the companion of the fish [i.e., Jonah] when he called out while he was distressed.

— Saheeh International

لَّوْلَآ

If not

lawlā

أَن

that

an

تَدَٰرَكَهُۥ

overtook him

tadārakahu

نِعْمَةٌۭ

a Favor

niʿ'matun

مِّن

from

min

رَّبِّهِۦ

his Lord

rabbihi

لَنُبِذَ

surely he would have been thrown

lanubidha

بِٱلْعَرَآءِ

onto (the) naked shore

bil-ʿarāi

وَهُوَ

while he

wahuwa

مَذْمُومٌۭ

(was) blamed

madhmūmun

٤٩

If not that a favor [i.e., mercy] from his Lord overtook him, he would have been thrown onto the naked shore while he was censured.1

— Saheeh International

فَٱجْتَبَـٰهُ

But chose him

fa-ij'tabāhu

رَبُّهُۥ

his Lord

rabbuhu

فَجَعَلَهُۥ

and made him

fajaʿalahu

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ

the righteous

l-ṣāliḥīna

٥٠

And his Lord chose him and made him of the righteous.

— Saheeh International

وَإِن

And indeed

wa-in

يَكَادُ

would almost

yakādu

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

كَفَرُوا۟

disbelieve

kafarū

لَيُزْلِقُونَكَ

surely make you slip

layuz'liqūnaka

بِأَبْصَـٰرِهِمْ

with their look

bi-abṣārihim

لَمَّا

when

lammā

سَمِعُوا۟

they hear

samiʿū

ٱلذِّكْرَ

the Message

l-dhik'ra

وَيَقُولُونَ

and they say

wayaqūlūna

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed, he

innahu

لَمَجْنُونٌۭ

(is) surely mad

lamajnūnun

٥١

And indeed, those who disbelieve would almost make you slip with their eyes [i.e., looks] when they hear the message, and they say, "Indeed, he is mad."

— Saheeh International

وَمَا

And not

wamā

هُوَ

it (is)

huwa

إِلَّا

but

illā

But it is not except a reminder to the worlds.
