[He] who created death and life to test you [as to] which of you is best in deed - and He is the Exalted in Might, the Forgiving -
ٱلَّذِى The One Who alladhī created khalaqa seven sabʿa heavens samāwātin one above another ṭibāqan Not mā you see tarā in fī (the) creation khalqi (of) the Most Gracious l-raḥmāni any min fault tafāwutin So return fa-ir'jiʿi the vision l-baṣara can hal you see tarā any min flaw fuṭūrin
[And] who created seven heavens in layers.1 You do not see in the creation of the Most Merciful any inconsistency. So return [your] vision [to the sky]; do you see any breaks?
ثُمَّ Then thumma return ir'jiʿi the vision l-baṣara twice (again) karratayni Will return yanqalib to you ilayka the vision l-baṣaru humbled khāsi-an while it wahuwa (is) fatigued ḥasīrun
Then return [your] vision twice again.1 [Your] vision will return to you humbled while it is fatigued.
وَلَقَدْ And certainly walaqad We have beautified zayyannā the heaven l-samāa nearest l-dun'yā with lamps bimaṣābīḥa and We have made them wajaʿalnāhā (as) missiles rujūman for the devils lilshayāṭīni and We have prepared wa-aʿtadnā for them lahum punishment ʿadhāba (of) the Blaze l-saʿīri
And We have certainly beautified the nearest heaven with lamps [i.e., stars] and have made [from] them what is thrown at the devils1 and have prepared for them the punishment of the Blaze.

When they are thrown into it, they hear from it a [dreadful] inhaling while it boils up.
تَكَادُ It almost takādu bursts tamayyazu from mina rage l-ghayẓi Every time kullamā is thrown ul'qiya therein fīhā a group fawjun (will) ask them sa-alahum its keepers khazanatuhā Did not alam come to you yatikum a warner nadhīrun
It almost bursts with rage. Every time a company is thrown into it, its keepers ask them, "Did there not come to you a warner?"
قَالُوا۟ They will say qālū Yes balā indeed qad came to us jāanā a warner nadhīrun but we denied fakadhabnā and we said waqul'nā Not mā has sent down nazzala Allah l-lahu any min thing shayin Not in you (are) antum but illā in fī error ḍalālin great kabīrin
They will say, "Yes, a warner had come to us, but we denied and said, 'Allāh has not sent down anything. You are not but in great error.'"
وَقَالُوا۟ And they will say waqālū If law we had kunnā listened nasmaʿu or aw reasoned naʿqilu not mā we (would) have been kunnā among fī (the) companions aṣḥābi (of) the Blaze l-saʿīri
And they will say, "If only we had been listening or reasoning, we would not be among the companions of the Blaze."
فَٱعْتَرَفُوا۟ Then they (will) confess fa-iʿ'tarafū their sins bidhanbihim so away with fasuḥ'qan (the) companions li-aṣḥābi (of) the Blaze l-saʿīri
And they will admit their sin, so [it is] alienation1 for the companions of the Blaze.
إِنَّ Indeed inna those who alladhīna fear yakhshawna their Lord rabbahum unseen bil-ghaybi for them lahum (is) forgiveness maghfiratun and a reward wa-ajrun great kabīrun
Indeed, those who fear their Lord unseen will have forgiveness and great reward.
وَأَسِرُّوا۟ And conceal wa-asirrū your speech qawlakum or awi proclaim ij'harū it bihi Indeed, He innahu (is the) All-Knower ʿalīmun of what (is in) bidhāti the breasts l-ṣudūri
And conceal your speech or publicize it; indeed, He is Knowing of that within the breasts.
أَلَا Does not alā know yaʿlamu (the One) Who man created khalaqa And He wahuwa (is) the Subtle l-laṭīfu the All-Aware l-khabīru
Does He who created not know,1 while He is the Subtle, the Aware?
هُوَ He huwa (is) the One Who alladhī made jaʿala for you lakumu the earth l-arḍa subservient dhalūlan so walk fa-im'shū in fī (the) paths thereof manākibihā and eat wakulū of min His provision riz'qihi and to Him wa-ilayhi (is) the Resurrection l-nushūru
It is He who made the earth tame1 for you - so walk among its slopes and eat of His provision - and to Him is the resurrection.

Do you feel secure that He who is above1 would not cause the earth to swallow you and suddenly it would sway?2
أَمْ Or am do you feel secure amintum (from Him) Who man (is) in fī the heaven l-samāi that an He will send yur'sila against you ʿalaykum a storm of stones ḥāṣiban Then you would know fasataʿlamūna how kayfa (was) My warning nadhīri
Or do you feel secure that He who is above would not send against you a storm of stones? Then you would know how [severe] was My warning.
وَلَقَدْ And indeed walaqad denied kadhaba those alladhīna from min before them qablihim and how fakayfa was kāna My rejection nakīri
And already had those before them denied, and how [terrible] was My reproach.

Do they not see the birds above them with wings outspread and [sometimes] folded in? None holds them [aloft] except the Most Merciful. Indeed He is, of all things, Seeing.
أَمَّنْ Who is amman this hādhā the one alladhī he huwa (is) an army jundun for you lakum to help you yanṣurukum from min besides dūni the Most Gracious l-raḥmāni Not ini (are) the disbelievers l-kāfirūna but illā in fī delusion ghurūrin
Or who is it that could be an army for you to aid you other than the Most Merciful? The disbelievers are not but in delusion.

Then is one who walks fallen on his face better guided or one who walks erect on a straight path?
قُلْ Say qul He huwa (is) the One Who alladhī produced you ansha-akum and made wajaʿala for you lakumu the hearing l-samʿa and the vision wal-abṣāra and the feelings wal-afidata Little qalīlan (is) what mā you give thanks tashkurūna
Say, "It is He who has produced you and made for you hearing and vision and hearts [i.e., intellect]; little are you grateful."
قُلْ Say qul He huwa (is) the One Who alladhī multiplied you dhara-akum in fī the earth l-arḍi and to Him wa-ilayhi you will be gathered tuḥ'sharūna
Say, "It is He who has multiplied you throughout the earth, and to Him you will be gathered."

But when they see it1 approaching, the faces of those who disbelieve will be distressed, and it will be said, "This is that for which you used to call."2
قُلْ Say qul Have you seen ara-aytum if in destroys me ahlakaniya Allah l-lahu and whoever waman (is) with me maʿiya or aw has mercy upon us raḥimanā then who faman (can) protect yujīru the disbelievers l-kāfirīna from min a punishment ʿadhābin painful alīmin
Say, [O Muḥammad], "Have you considered:1 whether Allāh should cause my death and those with me or have mercy upon us, who can protect the disbelievers from a painful punishment?"
قُلْ Say qul He huwa (is) the Most Gracious l-raḥmānu we believe āmannā in Him bihi and upon Him waʿalayhi we put (our) trust tawakkalnā So you will know fasataʿlamūna who man (is) it huwa (that is) in fī error ḍalālin clear mubīnin
Say, "He is the Most Merciful; we have believed in Him, and upon Him we have relied. And you will [come to] know who it is that is in clear error."
قُلْ Say qul Have you seen ara-aytum if in becomes aṣbaḥa your water māukum sunken ghawran then who faman could bring you yatīkum water bimāin flowing maʿīnin
Say, "Have you considered: if your water was to become sunken [into the earth], then who could bring you flowing water?"
