The Sovereignty

الملك

تَبَـٰرَكَ

Blessed is

tabāraka

ٱلَّذِى

He

alladhī

بِيَدِهِ

in Whose Hand

biyadihi

ٱلْمُلْكُ

(is) the Dominion

l-mul'ku

وَهُوَ

and He

wahuwa

عَلَىٰ

(is) over

ʿalā

كُلِّ

every

kulli

شَىْءٍۢ

thing

shayin

قَدِيرٌ

All-Powerful

qadīrun

١

Blessed is He in whose hand is dominion, and He is over all things competent -

— Saheeh International

ٱلَّذِى

The One Who

alladhī

خَلَقَ

created

khalaqa

ٱلْمَوْتَ

death

l-mawta

وَٱلْحَيَوٰةَ

and life

wal-ḥayata

لِيَبْلُوَكُمْ

that He may test you

liyabluwakum

أَيُّكُمْ

which of you

ayyukum

أَحْسَنُ

(is) best

aḥsanu

عَمَلًۭا ۚ

(in) deed

ʿamalan

وَهُوَ

And He

wahuwa

ٱلْعَزِيزُ

(is) the All-Mighty

l-ʿazīzu

ٱلْغَفُورُ

the Oft-Forgiving

l-ghafūru

٢

[He] who created death and life to test you [as to] which of you is best in deed - and He is the Exalted in Might, the Forgiving -

— Saheeh International

ٱلَّذِى

The One Who

alladhī

خَلَقَ

created

khalaqa

سَبْعَ

seven

sabʿa

سَمَـٰوَٰتٍۢ

heavens

samāwātin

طِبَاقًۭا ۖ

one above another

ṭibāqan

مَّا

Not

تَرَىٰ

you see

tarā

فِى

in

خَلْقِ

(the) creation

khalqi

ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ

(of) the Most Gracious

l-raḥmāni

مِن

any

min

تَفَـٰوُتٍۢ ۖ

fault

tafāwutin

فَٱرْجِعِ

So return

fa-ir'jiʿi

ٱلْبَصَرَ

the vision

l-baṣara

هَلْ

can

hal

تَرَىٰ

you see

tarā

مِن

any

min

فُطُورٍۢ

flaw

fuṭūrin

٣

[And] who created seven heavens in layers.1 You do not see in the creation of the Most Merciful any inconsistency. So return [your] vision [to the sky]; do you see any breaks?

— Saheeh International

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

ٱرْجِعِ

return

ir'jiʿi

ٱلْبَصَرَ

the vision

l-baṣara

كَرَّتَيْنِ

twice (again)

karratayni

يَنقَلِبْ

Will return

yanqalib

إِلَيْكَ

to you

ilayka

ٱلْبَصَرُ

the vision

l-baṣaru

خَاسِئًۭا

humbled

khāsi-an

وَهُوَ

while it

wahuwa

حَسِيرٌۭ

(is) fatigued

ḥasīrun

٤

Then return [your] vision twice again.1 [Your] vision will return to you humbled while it is fatigued.

— Saheeh International

وَلَقَدْ

And certainly

walaqad

زَيَّنَّا

We have beautified

zayyannā

ٱلسَّمَآءَ

the heaven

l-samāa

ٱلدُّنْيَا

nearest

l-dun'yā

بِمَصَـٰبِيحَ

with lamps

bimaṣābīḥa

وَجَعَلْنَـٰهَا

and We have made them

wajaʿalnāhā

رُجُومًۭا

(as) missiles

rujūman

لِّلشَّيَـٰطِينِ ۖ

for the devils

lilshayāṭīni

وَأَعْتَدْنَا

and We have prepared

wa-aʿtadnā

لَهُمْ

for them

lahum

عَذَابَ

punishment

ʿadhāba

ٱلسَّعِيرِ

(of) the Blaze

l-saʿīri

٥

And We have certainly beautified the nearest heaven with lamps [i.e., stars] and have made [from] them what is thrown at the devils1 and have prepared for them the punishment of the Blaze.

— Saheeh International

وَلِلَّذِينَ

And for those who

walilladhīna

كَفَرُوا۟

disbelieved

kafarū

بِرَبِّهِمْ

in their Lord

birabbihim

عَذَابُ

(is the) punishment

ʿadhābu

جَهَنَّمَ ۖ

(of) Hell

jahannama

وَبِئْسَ

and wretched is

wabi'sa

ٱلْمَصِيرُ

the destination

l-maṣīru

٦

And for those who disbelieved in their Lord is the punishment of Hell, and wretched is the destination.

— Saheeh International

إِذَآ

When

idhā

أُلْقُوا۟

they are thrown

ul'qū

فِيهَا

therein

fīhā

سَمِعُوا۟

they will hear

samiʿū

لَهَا

from it

lahā

شَهِيقًۭا

an inhaling

shahīqan

وَهِىَ

while it

wahiya

تَفُورُ

boils up

tafūru

٧

When they are thrown into it, they hear from it a [dreadful] inhaling while it boils up.

— Saheeh International

تَكَادُ

It almost

takādu

تَمَيَّزُ

bursts

tamayyazu

مِنَ

from

mina

ٱلْغَيْظِ ۖ

rage

l-ghayẓi

كُلَّمَآ

Every time

kullamā

أُلْقِىَ

is thrown

ul'qiya

فِيهَا

therein

fīhā

فَوْجٌۭ

a group

fawjun

سَأَلَهُمْ

(will) ask them

sa-alahum

خَزَنَتُهَآ

its keepers

khazanatuhā

أَلَمْ

Did not

alam

يَأْتِكُمْ

come to you

yatikum

نَذِيرٌۭ

a warner

nadhīrun

٨

It almost bursts with rage. Every time a company is thrown into it, its keepers ask them, "Did there not come to you a warner?"

— Saheeh International

قَالُوا۟

They will say

qālū

بَلَىٰ

Yes

balā

قَدْ

indeed

qad

جَآءَنَا

came to us

jāanā

نَذِيرٌۭ

a warner

nadhīrun

فَكَذَّبْنَا

but we denied

fakadhabnā

وَقُلْنَا

and we said

waqul'nā

مَا

Not

نَزَّلَ

has sent down

nazzala

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

مِن

any

min

شَىْءٍ

thing

shayin

إِنْ

Not

in

أَنتُمْ

you (are)

antum

إِلَّا

but

illā

فِى

in

ضَلَـٰلٍۢ

error

ḍalālin

كَبِيرٍۢ

great

kabīrin

٩

They will say, "Yes, a warner had come to us, but we denied and said, 'Allāh has not sent down anything. You are not but in great error.'"

— Saheeh International

وَقَالُوا۟

And they will say

waqālū

لَوْ

If

law

كُنَّا

we had

kunnā

نَسْمَعُ

listened

nasmaʿu

أَوْ

or

aw

نَعْقِلُ

reasoned

naʿqilu

مَا

not

كُنَّا

we (would) have been

kunnā

فِىٓ

among

أَصْحَـٰبِ

(the) companions

aṣḥābi

ٱلسَّعِيرِ

(of) the Blaze

l-saʿīri

١٠

And they will say, "If only we had been listening or reasoning, we would not be among the companions of the Blaze."

— Saheeh International

فَٱعْتَرَفُوا۟

Then they (will) confess

fa-iʿ'tarafū

بِذَنۢبِهِمْ

their sins

bidhanbihim

فَسُحْقًۭا

so away with

fasuḥ'qan

لِّأَصْحَـٰبِ

(the) companions

li-aṣḥābi

ٱلسَّعِيرِ

(of) the Blaze

l-saʿīri

١١

And they will admit their sin, so [it is] alienation1 for the companions of the Blaze.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

يَخْشَوْنَ

fear

yakhshawna

رَبَّهُم

their Lord

rabbahum

بِٱلْغَيْبِ

unseen

bil-ghaybi

لَهُم

for them

lahum

مَّغْفِرَةٌۭ

(is) forgiveness

maghfiratun

وَأَجْرٌۭ

and a reward

wa-ajrun

كَبِيرٌۭ

great

kabīrun

١٢

Indeed, those who fear their Lord unseen will have forgiveness and great reward.

— Saheeh International

وَأَسِرُّوا۟

And conceal

wa-asirrū

قَوْلَكُمْ

your speech

qawlakum

أَوِ

or

awi

ٱجْهَرُوا۟

proclaim

ij'harū

بِهِۦٓ ۖ

it

bihi

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed, He

innahu

عَلِيمٌۢ

(is the) All-Knower

ʿalīmun

بِذَاتِ

of what (is in)

bidhāti

ٱلصُّدُورِ

the breasts

l-ṣudūri

١٣

And conceal your speech or publicize it; indeed, He is Knowing of that within the breasts.

— Saheeh International

أَلَا

Does not

alā

يَعْلَمُ

know

yaʿlamu

مَنْ

(the One) Who

man

خَلَقَ

created

khalaqa

وَهُوَ

And He

wahuwa

ٱللَّطِيفُ

(is) the Subtle

l-laṭīfu

ٱلْخَبِيرُ

the All-Aware

l-khabīru

١٤

Does He who created not know,1 while He is the Subtle, the Aware?

— Saheeh International

هُوَ

He

huwa

ٱلَّذِى

(is) the One Who

alladhī

جَعَلَ

made

jaʿala

لَكُمُ

for you

lakumu

ٱلْأَرْضَ

the earth

l-arḍa

ذَلُولًۭا

subservient

dhalūlan

فَٱمْشُوا۟

so walk

fa-im'shū

فِى

in

مَنَاكِبِهَا

(the) paths thereof

manākibihā

وَكُلُوا۟

and eat

wakulū

مِن

of

min

رِّزْقِهِۦ ۖ

His provision

riz'qihi

وَإِلَيْهِ

and to Him

wa-ilayhi

ٱلنُّشُورُ

(is) the Resurrection

l-nushūru

١٥

It is He who made the earth tame1 for you - so walk among its slopes and eat of His provision - and to Him is the resurrection.

— Saheeh International

ءَأَمِنتُم

Do you feel secure

a-amintum

مَّن

(from Him) Who

man

فِى

(is) in

ٱلسَّمَآءِ

the heaven

l-samāi

أَن

not

an

يَخْسِفَ

He will cause to swallow

yakhsifa

بِكُمُ

you

bikumu

ٱلْأَرْضَ

the earth

l-arḍa

فَإِذَا

when

fa-idhā

هِىَ

it

hiya

تَمُورُ

sways

tamūru

١٦

Do you feel secure that He who is above1 would not cause the earth to swallow you and suddenly it would sway?2

— Saheeh International

أَمْ

Or

am

أَمِنتُم

do you feel secure

amintum

مَّن

(from Him) Who

man

فِى

(is) in

ٱلسَّمَآءِ

the heaven

l-samāi

أَن

that

an

يُرْسِلَ

He will send

yur'sila

عَلَيْكُمْ

against you

ʿalaykum

حَاصِبًۭا ۖ

a storm of stones

ḥāṣiban

فَسَتَعْلَمُونَ

Then you would know

fasataʿlamūna

كَيْفَ

how

kayfa

نَذِيرِ

(was) My warning

nadhīri

١٧

Or do you feel secure that He who is above would not send against you a storm of stones? Then you would know how [severe] was My warning.

— Saheeh International

وَلَقَدْ

And indeed

walaqad

كَذَّبَ

denied

kadhaba

ٱلَّذِينَ

those

alladhīna

مِن

from

min

قَبْلِهِمْ

before them

qablihim

فَكَيْفَ

and how

fakayfa

كَانَ

was

kāna

نَكِيرِ

My rejection

nakīri

١٨

And already had those before them denied, and how [terrible] was My reproach.

— Saheeh International

أَوَلَمْ

Do not

awalam

يَرَوْا۟

they see

yaraw

إِلَى

[to]

ilā

ٱلطَّيْرِ

the birds

l-ṭayri

فَوْقَهُمْ

above them

fawqahum

صَـٰٓفَّـٰتٍۢ

spreading (their wings)

ṣāffātin

وَيَقْبِضْنَ ۚ

and folding

wayaqbiḍ'na

مَا

Not

يُمْسِكُهُنَّ

holds them

yum'sikuhunna

إِلَّا

except

illā

ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُ ۚ

the Most Gracious

l-raḥmānu

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed, He

innahu

بِكُلِّ

(is) of every

bikulli

شَىْءٍۭ

thing

shayin

بَصِيرٌ

All-Seer

baṣīrun

١٩

Do they not see the birds above them with wings outspread and [sometimes] folded in? None holds them [aloft] except the Most Merciful. Indeed He is, of all things, Seeing.

— Saheeh International

أَمَّنْ

Who is

amman

هَـٰذَا

this

hādhā

ٱلَّذِى

the one

alladhī

هُوَ

he

huwa

جُندٌۭ

(is) an army

jundun

لَّكُمْ

for you

lakum

يَنصُرُكُم

to help you

yanṣurukum

مِّن

from

min

دُونِ

besides

dūni

ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ۚ

the Most Gracious

l-raḥmāni

إِنِ

Not

ini

ٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَ

(are) the disbelievers

l-kāfirūna

إِلَّا

but

illā

فِى

in

غُرُورٍ

delusion

ghurūrin

٢٠

Or who is it that could be an army for you to aid you other than the Most Merciful? The disbelievers are not but in delusion.

— Saheeh International

أَمَّنْ

Who is

amman

هَـٰذَا

this

hādhā

ٱلَّذِى

the one

alladhī

يَرْزُقُكُمْ

to provide you

yarzuqukum

إِنْ

if

in

أَمْسَكَ

He withheld

amsaka

رِزْقَهُۥ ۚ

His provision

riz'qahu

بَل

Nay

bal

لَّجُّوا۟

they persist

lajjū

فِى

in

عُتُوٍّۢ

pride

ʿutuwwin

وَنُفُورٍ

and aversion

wanufūrin

٢١

Or who is it that could provide for you if He withheld His provision? But they have persisted in insolence and aversion.

— Saheeh International

أَفَمَن

Then is he who

afaman

يَمْشِى

walks

yamshī

مُكِبًّا

fallen

mukibban

عَلَىٰ

on

ʿalā

وَجْهِهِۦٓ

his face

wajhihi

أَهْدَىٰٓ

better guided

ahdā

أَمَّن

or (he) who

amman

يَمْشِى

walks

yamshī

سَوِيًّا

upright

sawiyyan

عَلَىٰ

on

ʿalā

صِرَٰطٍۢ

(the) Path

ṣirāṭin

مُّسْتَقِيمٍۢ

Straight

mus'taqīmin

٢٢

Then is one who walks fallen on his face better guided or one who walks erect on a straight path?

— Saheeh International

قُلْ

Say

qul

هُوَ

He

huwa

ٱلَّذِىٓ

(is) the One Who

alladhī

أَنشَأَكُمْ

produced you

ansha-akum

وَجَعَلَ

and made

wajaʿala

لَكُمُ

for you

lakumu

ٱلسَّمْعَ

the hearing

l-samʿa

وَٱلْأَبْصَـٰرَ

and the vision

wal-abṣāra

وَٱلْأَفْـِٔدَةَ ۖ

and the feelings

wal-afidata

قَلِيلًۭا

Little

qalīlan

مَّا

(is) what

تَشْكُرُونَ

you give thanks

tashkurūna

٢٣

Say, "It is He who has produced you and made for you hearing and vision and hearts [i.e., intellect]; little are you grateful."

— Saheeh International

قُلْ

Say

qul

هُوَ

He

huwa

ٱلَّذِى

(is) the One Who

alladhī

ذَرَأَكُمْ

multiplied you

dhara-akum

فِى

in

ٱلْأَرْضِ

the earth

l-arḍi

وَإِلَيْهِ

and to Him

wa-ilayhi

تُحْشَرُونَ

you will be gathered

tuḥ'sharūna

٢٤

Say, "It is He who has multiplied you throughout the earth, and to Him you will be gathered."

— Saheeh International

وَيَقُولُونَ

And they say

wayaqūlūna

مَتَىٰ

When

matā

هَـٰذَا

(is) this

hādhā

ٱلْوَعْدُ

promise

l-waʿdu

إِن

if

in

كُنتُمْ

you are

kuntum

صَـٰدِقِينَ

truthful

ṣādiqīna

٢٥

And they say, "When is this promise, if you should be truthful?"

— Saheeh International

قُلْ

Say

qul

إِنَّمَا

Only

innamā

ٱلْعِلْمُ

the knowledge

l-ʿil'mu

عِندَ

(is) with

ʿinda

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

وَإِنَّمَآ

and only

wa-innamā

أَنَا۠

I am

anā

نَذِيرٌۭ

a warner

nadhīrun

مُّبِينٌۭ

clear

mubīnun

٢٦

Say, "The knowledge is only with Allāh, and I am only a clear warner."

— Saheeh International

فَلَمَّا

But when

falammā

رَأَوْهُ

they (will) see it

ra-awhu

زُلْفَةًۭ

approaching

zul'fatan

سِيٓـَٔتْ

(will be) distressed

sīat

وُجُوهُ

(the) faces

wujūhu

ٱلَّذِينَ

(of) those who

alladhīna

كَفَرُوا۟

disbelieved

kafarū

وَقِيلَ

and it will be said

waqīla

هَـٰذَا

This

hādhā

ٱلَّذِى

(is) that which

alladhī

كُنتُم

you used to

kuntum

بِهِۦ

for it

bihi

تَدَّعُونَ

call

taddaʿūna

٢٧

But when they see it1 approaching, the faces of those who disbelieve will be distressed, and it will be said, "This is that for which you used to call."2

— Saheeh International

قُلْ

Say

qul

أَرَءَيْتُمْ

Have you seen

ara-aytum

إِنْ

if

in

أَهْلَكَنِىَ

destroys me

ahlakaniya

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

وَمَن

and whoever

waman

مَّعِىَ

(is) with me

maʿiya

أَوْ

or

aw

رَحِمَنَا

has mercy upon us

raḥimanā

فَمَن

then who

faman

يُجِيرُ

(can) protect

yujīru

ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ

the disbelievers

l-kāfirīna

مِنْ

from

min

عَذَابٍ

a punishment

ʿadhābin

أَلِيمٍۢ

painful

alīmin

٢٨

Say, [O Muḥammad], "Have you considered:1 whether Allāh should cause my death and those with me or have mercy upon us, who can protect the disbelievers from a painful punishment?"

— Saheeh International

قُلْ

Say

qul

هُوَ

He

huwa

ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُ

(is) the Most Gracious

l-raḥmānu

ءَامَنَّا

we believe

āmannā

بِهِۦ

in Him

bihi

وَعَلَيْهِ

and upon Him

waʿalayhi

تَوَكَّلْنَا ۖ

we put (our) trust

tawakkalnā

فَسَتَعْلَمُونَ

So you will know

fasataʿlamūna

مَنْ

who

man

هُوَ

(is) it

huwa

فِى

(that is) in

ضَلَـٰلٍۢ

error

ḍalālin

مُّبِينٍۢ

clear

mubīnin

٢٩

Say, "He is the Most Merciful; we have believed in Him, and upon Him we have relied. And you will [come to] know who it is that is in clear error."

— Saheeh International

قُلْ

Say

qul

أَرَءَيْتُمْ

Have you seen

ara-aytum

إِنْ

if

in

أَصْبَحَ

becomes

aṣbaḥa

مَآؤُكُمْ

your water

māukum

غَوْرًۭا

sunken

ghawran

فَمَن

then who

faman

يَأْتِيكُم

could bring you

yatīkum

بِمَآءٍۢ

water

bimāin
