Al-Munāfiqūn

The Hypocrites

المنافقون

إِذَا

When

idhā

جَآءَكَ

come to you

jāaka

ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقُونَ

the hypocrites

l-munāfiqūna

قَالُوا۟

they say

qālū

نَشْهَدُ

We testify

nashhadu

إِنَّكَ

that you

innaka

لَرَسُولُ

(are) surely (the) Messenger

larasūlu

ٱللَّهِ ۗ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

يَعْلَمُ

knows

yaʿlamu

إِنَّكَ

that you

innaka

لَرَسُولُهُۥ

(are) surely His Messenger

larasūluhu

وَٱللَّهُ

and Allah

wal-lahu

يَشْهَدُ

testifies

yashhadu

إِنَّ

that

inna

ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَ

the hypocrites

l-munāfiqīna

لَكَـٰذِبُونَ

(are) surely liars

lakādhibūna

١

When the hypocrites come to you, [O Muḥammad], they say, "We testify that you are the Messenger of Allāh." And Allāh knows that you are His Messenger, and Allāh testifies that the hypocrites are liars.

— Saheeh International

ٱتَّخَذُوٓا۟

They take

ittakhadhū

أَيْمَـٰنَهُمْ

their oaths

aymānahum

جُنَّةًۭ

(as) a cover

junnatan

فَصَدُّوا۟

so they turn away

faṣaddū

عَن

from

ʿan

سَبِيلِ

(the) Way

sabīli

ٱللَّهِ ۚ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

إِنَّهُمْ

Indeed, [they]

innahum

سَآءَ

evil is

sāa

مَا

what

كَانُوا۟

they used to

kānū

يَعْمَلُونَ

do

yaʿmalūna

٢

They have taken their oaths as a cover, so they averted [people] from the way of Allāh. Indeed, it was evil that they were doing.

— Saheeh International

ذَٰلِكَ

That

dhālika

بِأَنَّهُمْ

(is) because

bi-annahum

ءَامَنُوا۟

they believed

āmanū

ثُمَّ

then

thumma

كَفَرُوا۟

they disbelieved

kafarū

فَطُبِعَ

so were sealed

faṭubiʿa

عَلَىٰ

[upon]

ʿalā

قُلُوبِهِمْ

their hearts

qulūbihim

فَهُمْ

so they

fahum

لَا

(do) not

يَفْقَهُونَ

understand

yafqahūna

٣

That is because they believed, and then they disbelieved; so their hearts were sealed over, and they do not understand.

— Saheeh International

۞ وَإِذَا

And when

wa-idhā

رَأَيْتَهُمْ

you see them

ra-aytahum

تُعْجِبُكَ

pleases you

tuʿ'jibuka

أَجْسَامُهُمْ ۖ

their bodies

ajsāmuhum

وَإِن

and if

wa-in

يَقُولُوا۟

they speak

yaqūlū

تَسْمَعْ

you listen

tasmaʿ

لِقَوْلِهِمْ ۖ

to their speech

liqawlihim

كَأَنَّهُمْ

as if they (were)

ka-annahum

خُشُبٌۭ

pieces of wood

khushubun

مُّسَنَّدَةٌۭ ۖ

propped up

musannadatun

يَحْسَبُونَ

They think

yaḥsabūna

كُلَّ

every

kulla

صَيْحَةٍ

shout

ṣayḥatin

عَلَيْهِمْ ۚ

(is) against them

ʿalayhim

هُمُ

They

humu

ٱلْعَدُوُّ

(are) the enemy

l-ʿaduwu

فَٱحْذَرْهُمْ ۚ

so beware of them

fa-iḥ'dharhum

قَـٰتَلَهُمُ

May destroy them

qātalahumu

ٱللَّهُ ۖ

Allah

l-lahu

أَنَّىٰ

How

annā

يُؤْفَكُونَ

are they deluded

yu'fakūna

٤

And when you see them, their forms please you, and if they speak, you listen to their speech. [They are] as if they were pieces of wood propped up1 - they think that every shout is against them. They are the enemy, so beware of them. May Allāh destroy them; how are they deluded?

— Saheeh International

وَإِذَا

And when

wa-idhā

قِيلَ

it is said

qīla

لَهُمْ

to them

lahum

تَعَالَوْا۟

Come

taʿālaw

يَسْتَغْفِرْ

will ask forgiveness

yastaghfir

لَكُمْ

for you

lakum

رَسُولُ

(the) Messenger

rasūlu

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

لَوَّوْا۟

They turn aside

lawwaw

رُءُوسَهُمْ

their heads

ruūsahum

وَرَأَيْتَهُمْ

and you see them

wara-aytahum

يَصُدُّونَ

turning away

yaṣuddūna

وَهُم

while they

wahum

مُّسْتَكْبِرُونَ

(are) arrogant

mus'takbirūna

٥

And when it is said to them, "Come, the Messenger of Allāh will ask forgiveness for you," they turn their heads aside and you see them evading while they are arrogant.

— Saheeh International

سَوَآءٌ

(It) is same

sawāon

عَلَيْهِمْ

for them

ʿalayhim

أَسْتَغْفَرْتَ

whether you ask forgiveness

astaghfarta

لَهُمْ

for them

lahum

أَمْ

or

am

لَمْ

(do) not

lam

تَسْتَغْفِرْ

ask forgiveness

tastaghfir

لَهُمْ

for them

lahum

لَن

Never

lan

يَغْفِرَ

will forgive

yaghfira

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

لَهُمْ ۚ

[to] them

lahum

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

لَا

(does) not

يَهْدِى

guide

yahdī

ٱلْقَوْمَ

the people

l-qawma

ٱلْفَـٰسِقِينَ

the defiantly disobedient

l-fāsiqīna

٦

It is all the same for them whether you ask forgiveness for them or do not ask forgiveness for them; never will Allāh forgive them. Indeed, Allāh does not guide the defiantly disobedient people.

— Saheeh International

هُمُ

They

humu

ٱلَّذِينَ

(are) those who

alladhīna

يَقُولُونَ

say

yaqūlūna

لَا

(Do) not

تُنفِقُوا۟

spend

tunfiqū

عَلَىٰ

on

ʿalā

مَنْ

(those) who

man

عِندَ

(are) with

ʿinda

رَسُولِ

(the) Messenger

rasūli

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

حَتَّىٰ

until

ḥattā

يَنفَضُّوا۟ ۗ

they disband

yanfaḍḍū

وَلِلَّهِ

And for Allah

walillahi

خَزَآئِنُ

(are the) treasures

khazāinu

ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ

(of) the heavens

l-samāwāti

وَٱلْأَرْضِ

and the earth

wal-arḍi

وَلَـٰكِنَّ

but

walākinna

ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَ

the hypocrites

l-munāfiqīna

لَا

(do) not

يَفْقَهُونَ

understand

yafqahūna

٧

They are the ones who say, "Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of Allāh until they disband." And to Allāh belong the depositories of the heavens and the earth, but the hypocrites do not understand.

— Saheeh International

يَقُولُونَ

They say

yaqūlūna

لَئِن

If

la-in

رَّجَعْنَآ

we return

rajaʿnā

إِلَى

to

ilā

ٱلْمَدِينَةِ

Al-Madinah

l-madīnati

لَيُخْرِجَنَّ

surely, will expel

layukh'rijanna

ٱلْأَعَزُّ

the more honorable

l-aʿazu

مِنْهَا

from it

min'hā

ٱلْأَذَلَّ ۚ

the more humble

l-adhala

وَلِلَّهِ

But for Allah

walillahi

ٱلْعِزَّةُ

(is) the honor

l-ʿizatu

وَلِرَسُولِهِۦ

and for His Messenger

walirasūlihi

وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

and for the believers

walil'mu'minīna

وَلَـٰكِنَّ

but

walākinna

ٱلْمُنَـٰفِقِينَ

the hypocrites

l-munāfiqīna

لَا

(do) not

يَعْلَمُونَ

know

yaʿlamūna

٨

They say, "If we return to al-Madīnah, the more honored [for power] will surely expel therefrom the more humble." And to Allāh belongs [all] honor, and to His Messenger, and to the believers, but the hypocrites do not know.

— Saheeh International

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا

O

yāayyuhā

ٱلَّذِينَ

you (who)

alladhīna

ءَامَنُوا۟

believe

āmanū

لَا

(Let) not

تُلْهِكُمْ

divert you

tul'hikum

أَمْوَٰلُكُمْ

your wealth

amwālukum

وَلَآ

and not

walā

أَوْلَـٰدُكُمْ

your children

awlādukum

عَن

from

ʿan

ذِكْرِ

(the) remembrance

dhik'ri

ٱللَّهِ ۚ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

وَمَن

And whoever

waman

يَفْعَلْ

does

yafʿal

ذَٰلِكَ

that

dhālika

فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

then those

fa-ulāika

هُمُ

[they]

humu

ٱلْخَـٰسِرُونَ

(are) the losers

l-khāsirūna

٩

O you who have believed, let not your wealth and your children divert you from the remembrance of Allāh. And whoever does that - then those are the losers.

— Saheeh International

وَأَنفِقُوا۟

And spend

wa-anfiqū

مِن

from

min

مَّا

what

رَزَقْنَـٰكُم

We have provided you

razaqnākum

مِّن

from

min

قَبْلِ

before

qabli

أَن

[that]

an

يَأْتِىَ

comes

yatiya

أَحَدَكُمُ

(to) one of you

aḥadakumu

ٱلْمَوْتُ

the death

l-mawtu

فَيَقُولَ

and he says

fayaqūla

رَبِّ

My Lord

rabbi

لَوْلَآ

Why not

lawlā

أَخَّرْتَنِىٓ

You delay me

akhartanī

إِلَىٰٓ

for

ilā

أَجَلٍۢ

a term

ajalin

قَرِيبٍۢ

near

qarībin

فَأَصَّدَّقَ

so I would give charity

fa-aṣṣaddaqa

وَأَكُن

and be

wa-akun

مِّنَ

among

mina

ٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ

the righteous

l-ṣāliḥīna

١٠

And spend [in the way of Allāh] from what We have provided you before death approaches one of you and he says, "My Lord, if only You would delay me for a brief term so I would give charity and be of the righteous."

— Saheeh International

وَلَن

But never

walan

يُؤَخِّرَ

will (be) delayed

yu-akhira

ٱللَّهُ

(by) Allah

l-lahu

نَفْسًا

a soul

nafsan

إِذَا

when

idhā

جَآءَ

has come

jāa

أَجَلُهَا ۚ

its term

ajaluhā

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

خَبِيرٌۢ

(is) All-Aware

khabīrun

بِمَا

of what

bimā

تَعْمَلُونَ

you do

taʿmalūna

١١

But never will Allāh delay a soul when its time has come. And Allāh is Aware of what you do.

— Saheeh International
