Al-Mumtaĥanah
She that is to be examined

الممتحنة
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you yāayyuhā who alladhīna believe āmanū (Do) not lā take tattakhidhū My enemies ʿaduwwī and your enemies waʿaduwwakum (as) allies awliyāa offering tul'qūna them ilayhim love bil-mawadati while waqad they have disbelieved kafarū in what bimā came to you jāakum of mina the truth l-ḥaqi driving out yukh'rijūna the Messenger l-rasūla and yourselves wa-iyyākum because an you believe tu'minū in Allah bil-lahi your Lord rabbikum If in you kuntum come forth kharajtum (to) strive jihādan in fī My way sabīlī and (to) seek wa-ib'tighāa My Pleasure marḍātī You confide tusirrūna to them ilayhim love bil-mawadati but I Am wa-anā most knowing aʿlamu of what bimā you conceal akhfaytum and what wamā you declare aʿlantum And whoever waman does it yafʿalhu among you minkum then certainly faqad he has strayed ḍalla (from the) straight sawāa path l-sabīli
O you who have believed, do not take My enemies and your enemies as allies,1 extending to them affection while they have disbelieved in what came to you of the truth, having driven out the Prophet and yourselves [only] because you believe in Allāh, your Lord. If you have come out for jihād [i.e., fighting or striving] in My cause and seeking means to My approval, [take them not as friends]. You confide to them affection [i.e., instruction], but I am most knowing of what you have concealed and what you have declared. And whoever does it among you has certainly strayed from the soundness of the way.
إِن If in they gain dominance over you yathqafūkum they would be yakūnū to you lakum enemies aʿdāan and extend wayabsuṭū against you ilaykum their hands aydiyahum and their tongues wa-alsinatahum with evil bil-sūi and they desire wawaddū that law you would disbelieve takfurūna
If they gain dominance over you, they would be [i.e., behave] to you as enemies and extend against you their hands and their tongues with evil, and they wish you would disbelieve.
لَن Never lan will benefit you tanfaʿakum your relatives arḥāmukum and not walā your children awlādukum (on the) Day yawma (of) the Resurrection l-qiyāmati He will judge yafṣilu between you baynakum And Allah wal-lahu of what bimā you do taʿmalūna (is) All-Seer baṣīrun
Never will your relatives or your children benefit you; the Day of Resurrection He will judge between you. And Allāh, of what you do, is Seeing.
قَدْ Indeed qad (there) is kānat for you lakum an example us'watun good ḥasanatun in fī Ibrahim ib'rāhīma and those wa-alladhīna with him maʿahu when idh they said qālū to their people liqawmihim Indeed, we innā (are) disassociated buraāu from you minkum and from what wamimmā you worship taʿbudūna from min besides dūni Allah l-lahi We have denied kafarnā you bikum and has appeared wabadā between us baynanā and between you wabaynakumu enmity l-ʿadāwatu and hatred wal-baghḍāu forever abadan until ḥattā you believe tu'minū in Allah bil-lahi Alone waḥdahu Except illā (the) saying qawla (of) Ibrahim ib'rāhīma to his father li-abīhi Surely I ask forgiveness la-astaghfiranna for you laka but not wamā I have power amliku for you laka from mina Allah l-lahi of min anything shayin Our Lord rabbanā upon You ʿalayka we put our trust tawakkalnā and to You wa-ilayka we turn anabnā and to You wa-ilayka (is) the final return l-maṣīru
There has already been for you an excellent pattern1 in Abraham and those with him, when they said to their people, "Indeed, we are disassociated from you and from whatever you worship other than Allāh. We have denied you, and there has appeared between us and you animosity and hatred forever until you believe in Allāh alone" - except for the saying of Abraham to his father, "I will surely ask forgiveness for you, but I have not [power to do] for you anything against Allāh. Our Lord, upon You we have relied, and to You we have returned, and to You is the destination.
رَبَّنَا Our Lord rabbanā (do) not lā make us tajʿalnā a trial fit'natan for those who lilladhīna disbelieve kafarū and forgive wa-igh'fir us lanā our Lord rabbanā Indeed You innaka [You] anta (are) the All-Mighty l-ʿazīzu the All-Wise l-ḥakīmu
Our Lord, make us not [objects of] torment for the disbelievers and forgive us, our Lord. Indeed, it is You who is the Exalted in Might, the Wise."
لَقَدْ Certainly laqad (there) is kāna for you lakum in them fīhim an example us'watun good ḥasanatun for (he) who liman is kāna hopeful yarjū (in) Allah l-laha and the Day wal-yawma the Last l-ākhira And whoever waman turns away yatawalla then indeed fa-inna Allah l-laha He huwa (is) Free of need l-ghaniyu the Praiseworthy l-ḥamīdu
There has certainly been for you in them an excellent pattern for anyone whose hope is in Allāh and the Last Day. And whoever turns away - then indeed, Allāh is the Free of need, the Praiseworthy.
۞ عَسَى Perhaps ʿasā Allah l-lahu [that] an will put yajʿala between you baynakum and between wabayna those (to) whom alladhīna you have been enemies ʿādaytum among them min'hum love mawaddatan And Allah wal-lahu (is) All-Powerful qadīrun And Allah wal-lahu (is) Oft-Forgiving ghafūrun Most Merciful raḥīmun
Perhaps Allāh will put, between you and those to whom you have been enemies among them, affection. And Allāh is competent,1 and Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.
لَّا Not lā (does) forbid you yanhākumu Allah l-lahu from ʿani those who alladhīna (do) not lam fight you yuqātilūkum in fī the religion l-dīni and (do) not walam drive you out yukh'rijūkum of min your homes diyārikum that an you deal kindly tabarrūhum and deal justly watuq'siṭū with them ilayhim Indeed inna Allah l-laha loves yuḥibbu those who act justly l-muq'siṭīna
Allāh does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes - from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allāh loves those who act justly.
إِنَّمَا Only innamā forbids you yanhākumu Allah l-lahu from ʿani those who alladhīna fight you qātalūkum in fī the religion l-dīni and drive you out wa-akhrajūkum of min your homes diyārikum and support waẓāharū in ʿalā your expulsion ikh'rājikum that an you make them allies tawallawhum And whoever waman makes them allies yatawallahum then those fa-ulāika [they] humu (are) the wrongdoers l-ẓālimūna
Allāh only forbids you from those who fight you because of religion and expel you from your homes and aid in your expulsion - [forbids] that you make allies1 of them. And whoever makes allies of them, then it is those who are the wrongdoers.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you yāayyuhā who alladhīna believe āmanū When idhā come to you jāakumu the believing women l-mu'minātu (as) emigrants muhājirātin then examine them fa-im'taḥinūhunna Allah l-lahu (is) most knowing aʿlamu of their faith biīmānihinna And if fa-in you know them ʿalim'tumūhunna (to be) believers mu'minātin then (do) not falā return them tarjiʿūhunna to ilā the disbelievers l-kufāri Not lā they hunna (are) lawful ḥillun for them lahum and not walā they hum are lawful yaḥillūna for them lahunna But give them waātūhum what mā they have spent anfaqū And not walā any blame junāḥa upon you ʿalaykum if an you marry them tankiḥūhunna when idhā you have given them ātaytumūhunna their (bridal) dues ujūrahunna And (do) not walā hold tum'sikū to marriage bonds biʿiṣami (with) disbelieving women l-kawāfiri but ask (for) wasalū what mā you have spent anfaqtum and let them ask walyasalū what mā they have spent anfaqū That dhālikum (is the) Judgment ḥuk'mu (of) Allah l-lahi He judges yaḥkumu between you baynakum And Allah wal-lahu (is) All-Knowing ʿalīmun All-Wise ḥakīmun
O you who have believed, when the believing women come to you as emigrants, examine [i.e., test] them. Allāh is most knowing as to their faith. And if you know them to be believers, then do not return them to the disbelievers; they are not lawful [wives] for them, nor are they lawful [husbands] for them. But give them [i.e., the disbelievers] what they have spent.1 And there is no blame upon you if you marry them when you have given them their due compensation [i.e., mahr]. And hold not to marriage bonds with disbelieving women, but ask for what you have spent and let them [i.e., the disbelievers] ask for what they have spent.2 That is the judgement of Allāh; He judges between you. And Allāh is Knowing and Wise.
وَإِن And if wa-in have gone from you fātakum any shayon of min your wives azwājikum to ilā the disbelievers l-kufāri then your turn comes faʿāqabtum then give faātū (to) those who alladhīna have gone dhahabat their wives azwājuhum (the) like mith'la (of) what mā they had spent anfaqū And fear wa-ittaqū Allah l-laha (in) Whom alladhī you antum [in Him] bihi (are) believers mu'minūna
And if you have lost any of your wives to the disbelievers and you subsequently obtain [something],1 then give those whose wives have gone the equivalent of what they had spent. And fear Allāh, in whom you are believers.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O yāayyuhā Prophet l-nabiyu When idhā come to you jāaka the believing women l-mu'minātu pledging to you yubāyiʿ'naka [on] ʿalā that an not lā they will associate yush'rik'na with Allah bil-lahi anything shayan and not walā they will steal yasriq'na and not walā they will commit adultery yaznīna and not walā they will kill yaqtul'na their children awlādahunna and not walā they bring yatīna slander bibuh'tānin they invent it yaftarīnahu between bayna their hands aydīhinna and their feet wa-arjulihinna and not walā they will disobey you yaʿṣīnaka in fī (the) right maʿrūfin then accept their pledge fabāyiʿ'hunna and ask forgiveness wa-is'taghfir for them lahunna (from) Allah l-laha Indeed inna Allah l-laha (is) Oft-Forgiving ghafūrun Most Merciful raḥīmun
O Prophet, when the believing women come to you pledging to you that they will not associate anything with Allāh, nor will they steal, nor will they commit unlawful sexual intercourse, nor will they kill their children, nor will they bring forth a slander they have invented between their arms and legs,1 nor will they disobey you in what is right - then accept their pledge and ask forgiveness for them of Allāh. Indeed, Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you yāayyuhā who alladhīna believe āmanū (Do) not lā make allies tatawallaw (of) a people qawman (The) wrath ghaḍiba (of) Allah l-lahu (is) upon them ʿalayhim Indeed qad they despair ya-isū of mina the Hereafter l-ākhirati as kamā despair ya-isa the disbelievers l-kufāru of min (the) companions aṣḥābi (of) the graves l-qubūri
O you who have believed, do not make allies of a people with whom Allāh has become angry. They have despaired of [reward in] the Hereafter just as the disbelievers have despaired of [meeting] the companions [i.e., inhabitants] of the graves.
