The Pleading Woman
﷽
المجادلة
قَدْ Indeed qad Allah has heard samiʿa Allah has heard l-lahu (the) speech qawla (of one) who allatī disputes with you tujādiluka concerning fī her husband zawjihā and she directs her complaint watashtakī to ilā Allah l-lahi And Allah wal-lahu hears yasmaʿu (the) dialogue of both of you taḥāwurakumā Indeed inna Allah l-laha (is) All-Hearer samīʿun All-Seer baṣīrun
Certainly has Allāh heard the speech of the one who argues [i.e., pleads] with you, [O Muḥammad], concerning her husband and directs her complaint to Allāh. And Allāh hears your dialogue; indeed, Allāh is Hearing and Seeing.
ٱلَّذِينَ Those who alladhīna pronounce zihar yuẓāhirūna among you minkum [from] min (to) their wives nisāihim not mā they hunna (are) their mothers ummahātihim Not in (are) their mothers ummahātuhum except illā those who allāī gave them birth waladnahum And indeed, they wa-innahum surely say layaqūlūna an evil munkaran [of] mina [the] word l-qawli and a lie wazūran But indeed wa-inna Allah l-laha (is) surely, Oft-Pardoning laʿafuwwun Oft-Forgiving ghafūrun
Those who pronounce ẓihār1 among you [to separate] from their wives - they are not [consequently] their mothers. Their mothers are none but those who gave birth to them. And indeed, they are saying an objectionable statement and a falsehood. But indeed, Allāh is Pardoning and Forgiving.
وَٱلَّذِينَ And those who wa-alladhīna pronounce zihar yuẓāhirūna [from] min (to) their wives nisāihim then thumma go back yaʿūdūna on what limā they said qālū then freeing fataḥrīru (of) a slave raqabatin before min before qabli [that] an they touch each other yatamāssā That dhālikum you are admonished tūʿaẓūna to it bihi And Allah wal-lahu of what bimā you do taʿmalūna (is) All-Aware khabīrun
And those who pronounce ẓihār from their wives and then [wish to] go back on what they said - then [there must be] the freeing of a slave before they touch one another. That is what you are admonished thereby; and Allāh is Aware of what you do.
فَمَن Then whoever faman (does) not lam find yajid then fasting faṣiyāmu (for) two months shahrayni consecutively mutatābiʿayni before min before qabli [that] an they both touch each other yatamāssā But (he) who faman not lam is able yastaṭiʿ then (the) feeding fa-iṭ'ʿāmu (of) sixty sittīna needy one(s) mis'kīnan That dhālika so that you may believe litu'minū in Allah bil-lahi and His Messenger warasūlihi and these watil'ka (are the) limits ḥudūdu (of) Allah l-lahi and for the disbelievers walil'kāfirīna (is) a punishment ʿadhābun painful alīmun
And he who does not find [a slave] - then a fast for two months consecutively1 before they touch one another; and he who is unable - then the feeding of sixty poor persons. That is for you to believe [completely] in Allāh and His Messenger; and those are the limits [set by] Allāh. And for the disbelievers is a painful punishment.
إِنَّ Indeed inna those who alladhīna oppose yuḥāddūna Allah l-laha and His Messenger warasūlahu (will) be disgraced kubitū as kamā were disgraced kubita those alladhīna before them min before them qablihim And certainly waqad We have sent down anzalnā Verses āyātin clear bayyinātin And for the disbelievers walil'kāfirīna (is) a punishment ʿadhābun humiliating muhīnun
Indeed, those who oppose Allāh and His Messenger are abased as those before them were abased. And We have certainly sent down verses of clear evidence. And for the disbelievers is a humiliating punishment
يَوْمَ (On the) Day yawma (when) Allah will raise them yabʿathuhumu (when) Allah will raise them l-lahu all jamīʿan and inform them fayunabbi-uhum of what bimā they did ʿamilū Allah has recorded it aḥṣāhu Allah has recorded it l-lahu while they forgot it wanasūhu And Allah wal-lahu (is) over ʿalā all kulli things shayin a Witness shahīdun
On the Day when Allāh will resurrect them all and inform them of what they did. Allāh had enumerated it, while they forgot it; and Allāh is, over all things, Witness.1
أَلَمْ Do not alam you see tara that anna Allah l-laha knows yaʿlamu whatever mā (is) in fī the heavens l-samāwāti and whatever wamā (is) in fī the earth l-arḍi Not mā there is yakūnu any min secret counsel najwā (of) three thalāthatin but illā He (is) huwa (the) fourth of them rābiʿuhum and not walā five khamsatin but illā He (is) huwa (the) sixth of them sādisuhum and not walā less adnā than min that dhālika and not walā more akthara but illā He huwa (is) with them maʿahum wherever ayna wherever mā they are kānū Then thumma He will inform them yunabbi-uhum of what bimā they did ʿamilū (on the) Day yawma (of) the Resurrection l-qiyāmati Indeed inna Allah l-laha of every bikulli thing shayin (is) All-Knower ʿalīmun
Have you not considered that Allāh knows what is in the heavens and what is on the earth? There are not three in a private conversation but that He is the fourth of them,1 nor are there five but that He is the sixth of them - and no less than that and no more except that He is with them [in knowledge] wherever they are. Then He will inform them of what they did, on the Day of Resurrection. Indeed Allāh is, of all things, Knowing.
أَلَمْ Do not alam you see tara [to] ilā those who alladhīna were forbidden nuhū from ʿani secret counsels l-najwā then thumma they return yaʿūdūna to what limā they were forbidden nuhū from [it] ʿanhu and they hold secret counsels wayatanājawna for sin bil-ith'mi and aggression wal-ʿud'wāni and disobedience wamaʿṣiyati (to) the Messenger l-rasūli And when wa-idhā they come to you jāūka they greet you ḥayyawka with what bimā not lam greets you yuḥayyika therewith bihi Allah l-lahu and they say wayaqūlūna among fī themselves anfusihim Why (does) not lawlā Allah punish us yuʿadhibunā Allah punish us l-lahu for what bimā we say naqūlu Sufficient (for) them ḥasbuhum (is) Hell jahannamu they will burn in it yaṣlawnahā and worst is fabi'sa the destination l-maṣīru
Have you not considered those who were forbidden from private conversation [i.e., ridicule and conspiracy] and then return to that which they were forbidden and converse among themselves about sin and aggression and disobedience to the Messenger? And when they come to you, they greet you with that [word] by which Allāh does not greet you1 and say among themselves, "Why does Allāh not punish us for what we say?" Sufficient for them is Hell, which they will [enter to] burn, and wretched is the destination.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you who believe yāayyuhā O you who believe alladhīna O you who believe āmanū When idhā you hold secret counsel tanājaytum then (do) not falā hold secret counsel tatanājaw for sin bil-ith'mi and aggression wal-ʿud'wāni and disobedience wamaʿṣiyati (to) the Messenger l-rasūli but hold secret counsel watanājaw for righteousness bil-biri and piety wal-taqwā And fear wa-ittaqū Allah l-laha the One Who alladhī to Him ilayhi you will be gathered tuḥ'sharūna
O you who have believed, when you converse privately, do not converse about sin and aggression and disobedience to the Messenger but converse about righteousness and piety. And fear Allāh, to whom you will be gathered.
إِنَّمَا Only innamā the secret counsels l-najwā (are) from mina the Shaitaan l-shayṭāni that he may grieve liyaḥzuna those who alladhīna believe āmanū but not walaysa he (can) harm them biḍārrihim (in) anything shayan except illā by Allah's permission bi-idh'ni by Allah's permission l-lahi And upon waʿalā Allah l-lahi let put (their) trust falyatawakkali the believers l-mu'minūna
Private conversation is only from Satan that he may grieve those who have believed,1 but he will not harm them at all except by permission of Allāh. And upon Allāh let the believers rely.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you who believe yāayyuhā O you who believe alladhīna O you who believe āmanū When idhā it is said qīla to you lakum Make room tafassaḥū in fī the assemblies l-majālisi then make room fa-if'saḥū Allah will make room yafsaḥi Allah will make room l-lahu for you lakum And when wa-idhā it is said qīla Rise up unshuzū then rise up fa-unshuzū Allah will raise yarfaʿi Allah will raise l-lahu those who alladhīna believe āmanū among you minkum and those who wa-alladhīna were given ūtū the knowledge l-ʿil'ma (in) degrees darajātin And Allah wal-lahu of what bimā you do taʿmalūna (is) All-Aware khabīrun
O you who have believed, when you are told, "Space yourselves" in assemblies, then make space; Allāh will make space for you.1 And when you are told, "Arise,"2 then arise; Allāh will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees. And Allāh is Aware of what you do.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you who believe yāayyuhā O you who believe alladhīna O you who believe āmanū When idhā you privately consult nājaytumu the Messenger l-rasūla then offer faqaddimū before bayna before yaday your private consultation najwākum charity ṣadaqatan That dhālika (is) better khayrun for you lakum and purer wa-aṭharu But if fa-in not lam you find tajidū then indeed fa-inna Allah l-laha (is) Oft-Forgiving ghafūrun Most Merciful raḥīmun
O you who have believed, when you [wish to] privately consult the Messenger, present before your consultation a charity. That is better for you and purer. But if you find not [the means] - then indeed, Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.
ءَأَشْفَقْتُمْ Are you afraid a-ashfaqtum to an offer tuqaddimū before bayna before yaday your private consultation najwākum charities ṣadaqātin Then when fa-idh you do not lam you do not tafʿalū and Allah has forgiven watāba and Allah has forgiven l-lahu you ʿalaykum then establish fa-aqīmū the prayer l-ṣalata and give waātū the zakah l-zakata and obey wa-aṭīʿū Allah l-laha and His Messenger warasūlahu And Allah wal-lahu (is) All-Aware khabīrun of what bimā you do taʿmalūna
Have you feared to present before your consultation charities? Then when you do not and Allāh has forgiven you, then [at least] establish prayer and give zakāh and obey Allāh and His Messenger. And Allāh is Aware of what you do.
۞ أَلَمْ Do not alam you see tara [to] ilā those who alladhīna take as allies tawallaw a people qawman wrath ghaḍiba (of) Allah l-lahu (is) upon them ʿalayhim They (are) not mā They (are) not hum of you minkum and not walā of them min'hum and they swear wayaḥlifūna to ʿalā the lie l-kadhibi while they wahum know yaʿlamūna
Have you not considered those who make allies of a people with whom Allāh has become angry? They are neither of you nor of them, and they swear to untruth while they know [they are lying].
أَعَدَّ Allah has prepared aʿadda Allah has prepared l-lahu for them lahum a punishment ʿadhāban severe shadīdan Indeed, [they] innahum evil is sāa what mā they used to kānū do yaʿmalūna
Allāh has prepared for them a severe punishment. Indeed, it was evil that they were doing.
ٱتَّخَذُوٓا۟ They have taken ittakhadhū their oaths aymānahum (as) a cover junnatan so they hinder faṣaddū from ʿan (the) way of Allah sabīli (the) way of Allah l-lahi so for them falahum (is) a punishment ʿadhābun humiliating muhīnun
They took their [false] oaths as a cover, so they averted [people] from the way of Allāh, and for them is a humiliating punishment.
لَّن Never lan will avail tugh'niya them ʿanhum their wealth amwāluhum and not walā their children awlāduhum against mina Allah l-lahi (in) anything shayan Those ulāika (will be) companions aṣḥābu (of) the Fire l-nāri they hum in it fīhā will abide forever khālidūna
Never will their wealth or their children avail them against Allāh at all. Those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide therein eternally
يَوْمَ (On the) Day yawma Allah will raise them yabʿathuhumu Allah will raise them l-lahu all jamīʿan then they will swear fayaḥlifūna to Him lahu as kamā they swear yaḥlifūna to you lakum And they think wayaḥsabūna that they annahum (are) on ʿalā something shayin No doubt alā Indeed, they innahum [they] humu (are) the liars l-kādhibūna
On the Day Allāh will resurrect them all, and they will swear to Him as they swear to you and think that they are [standing] on something.1 Unquestionably, it is they who are the liars.
ٱسْتَحْوَذَ Has overcome is'taḥwadha them ʿalayhimu the Shaitaan l-shayṭānu so he made them forget fa-ansāhum (the) remembrance dhik'ra (of) Allah l-lahi Those ulāika (are the) party ḥiz'bu (of) the Shaitaan l-shayṭāni No doubt alā Indeed inna (the) party ḥiz'ba (of) the Shaitaan l-shayṭāni they humu (will be) the losers l-khāsirūna
Satan has overcome them and made them forget the remembrance of Allāh. Those are the party of Satan. Unquestionably, the party of Satan - they will be the losers.
إِنَّ Indeed inna those who alladhīna oppose yuḥāddūna Allah l-laha and His Messenger warasūlahu those ulāika (will be) among fī the most humiliated l-adhalīna
Indeed, the ones who oppose Allāh and His Messenger - those will be among the most humbled.
كَتَبَ Allah has decreed kataba Allah has decreed l-lahu Surely, I will overcome la-aghlibanna I anā and My Messengers warusulī Indeed inna Allah l-laha (is) All-Strong qawiyyun All-Mighty ʿazīzun
Allāh has written [i.e., decreed], "I will surely overcome, I and My messengers." Indeed, Allāh is Powerful and Exalted in Might.
لَّا You will not find lā You will not find tajidu a people qawman who believe yu'minūna in Allah bil-lahi and the Day wal-yawmi the Last l-ākhiri loving yuwāddūna (those) who man oppose ḥādda Allah l-laha and His Messenger warasūlahu even if walaw they were kānū their fathers ābāahum or aw their sons abnāahum or aw their brothers ikh'wānahum or aw their kindred ʿashīratahum Those ulāika He has decreed kataba within fī their hearts qulūbihimu faith l-īmāna and supported them wa-ayyadahum with a spirit birūḥin from Him min'hu And He will admit them wayud'khiluhum (to) Gardens jannātin flow tajrī from min underneath it taḥtihā the rivers l-anhāru will abide forever khālidīna in it fīhā Allah is pleased raḍiya Allah is pleased l-lahu with them ʿanhum and they are pleased waraḍū with Him ʿanhu Those ulāika (are the) party ḥiz'bu (of) Allah l-lahi No doubt alā Indeed inna (the) party ḥiz'ba (of) Allah l-lahi they humu (are) the successful ones l-muf'liḥūna
You will not find a people who believe in Allāh and the Last Day having affection for those who oppose Allāh and His Messenger, even if they were their fathers or their sons or their brothers or their kindred. Those - He has decreed within their hearts faith and supported them with spirit1 from Him. And We will admit them to gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they abide eternally. Allāh is pleased with them, and they are pleased with Him - those are the party of Allāh. Unquestionably, the party of Allāh - they are the successful.
