Al-Wāqi`ah
The Inevitable
﷽
الواقعة
إِذَا When idhā occurs waqaʿati the Event l-wāqiʿatu
When the Occurrence occurs,
لَيْسَ Not laysa at its occurrence liwaqʿatihā a denial kādhibatun
There is, at its occurrence, no denial.
خَافِضَةٌۭ Bringing down khāfiḍatun raising up rāfiʿatun
It will bring down [some] and raise up [others].1
إِذَا When idhā will be shaken rujjati the earth l-arḍu (with) a shaking rajjan
When the earth is shaken with convulsion
وَبُسَّتِ And will be crumbled wabussati the mountains l-jibālu (with awful) crumbling bassan
And the mountains are broken down, crumbling
فَكَانَتْ So they become fakānat dust particles habāan dispersing munbathan
And become dust dispersing,
وَكُنتُمْ And you will become wakuntum kinds azwājan three thalāthatan
And you become [of] three kinds:
فَأَصْحَـٰبُ Then (the) companions fa-aṣḥābu (of) the right l-maymanati what mā (are the) companions aṣḥābu (of) the right l-maymanati
Then the companions of the right - what are the companions of the right?1
وَأَصْحَـٰبُ And (the) companions wa-aṣḥābu (of) the left l-mashamati what mā (are the) companions aṣḥābu (of) the left l-mashamati
And the companions of the left - what are companions of the left?1
وَٱلسَّـٰبِقُونَ And the foremost wal-sābiqūna (are) the foremost l-sābiqūna
And the forerunners, the forerunners1 -
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ Those ulāika (are) the nearest ones l-muqarabūna
Those are the ones brought near [to Allāh]
فِى In fī Gardens jannāti (of) Pleasure l-naʿīmi
In the Gardens of Pleasure,
ثُلَّةٌۭ A company thullatun of mina the former (people) l-awalīna
A [large] company of the former peoples
وَقَلِيلٌۭ And a few waqalīlun of mina the later (people) l-ākhirīna
And a few of the later peoples,
عَلَىٰ On ʿalā thrones sururin decorated mawḍūnatin
On thrones woven [with ornament],
مُّتَّكِـِٔينَ Reclining muttakiīna on them ʿalayhā facing each other mutaqābilīna
Reclining on them, facing each other.
يَطُوفُ Will circulate yaṭūfu among them ʿalayhim boys wil'dānun immortal mukhalladūna
There will circulate among them young boys made eternal.
بِأَكْوَابٍۢ With vessels bi-akwābin and jugs wa-abārīqa and a cup wakasin from min a flowing stream maʿīnin
With vessels, pitchers and a cup [of wine] from a flowing spring -
لَّا Not lā they will get headache yuṣaddaʿūna therefrom ʿanhā and not walā they will get intoxicated yunzifūna
No headache will they have therefrom, nor will they be intoxicated -
وَفَـٰكِهَةٍۢ And fruits wafākihatin of what mimmā they select yatakhayyarūna
And fruit of what they select
وَلَحْمِ And (the) flesh walaḥmi (of) fowls ṭayrin of what mimmā they desire yashtahūna
And the meat of fowl, from whatever they desire.
وَحُورٌ And fair ones waḥūrun (with) large eyes ʿīnun
And [for them are] fair women with large, [beautiful] eyes,
كَأَمْثَـٰلِ Like ka-amthāli pearls l-lu'lu-i well-protected l-maknūni
The likenesses of pearls well-protected,
جَزَآءًۢ A reward jazāan for what bimā they used (to) kānū do yaʿmalūna
As reward for what they used to do.
لَا Not lā they will hear yasmaʿūna therein fīhā vain talk laghwan and not walā sinful (speech) tathīman
They will not hear therein ill speech or commission of sin -
إِلَّا Except illā a saying qīlan Peace salāman Peace salāman
Only a saying [of] peace, peace.
وَأَصْحَـٰبُ And (the) companions wa-aṣḥābu (of) the right l-yamīni what mā (are the) companions aṣḥābu (of) the right l-yamīni
The companions of the right - what are the companions of the right?
فِى Among fī lote trees sid'rin thornless makhḍūdin
[They will be] among lote trees with thorns removed.
وَطَلْحٍۢ And banana trees waṭalḥin layered manḍūdin
And [banana] trees layered [with fruit].
وَفَـٰكِهَةٍۢ And fruit wafākihatin abundant kathīratin
And fruit, abundant [and varied],
لَّا Not lā limited maqṭūʿatin and not walā forbidden mamnūʿatin
Neither limited [to season] nor forbidden,
وَفُرُشٍۢ And (on) couches wafurushin raised marfūʿatin
And [upon] beds raised high.
إِنَّآ Indeed, We innā [We] have produced them anshanāhunna (into) a creation inshāan
Indeed, We have produced them [i.e., the women of Paradise] in a [new] creation
فَجَعَلْنَـٰهُنَّ And We have made them fajaʿalnāhunna virgins abkāran
And made them virgins,
عُرُبًا Devoted ʿuruban equals in age atrāban
Devoted [to their husbands] and of equal age,
لِّأَصْحَـٰبِ For (the) companions li-aṣḥābi (of) the right l-yamīni
For the companions of the right [who are]
ثُلَّةٌۭ A company thullatun of mina the former people l-awalīna
A company of the former peoples
وَثُلَّةٌۭ And a company wathullatun of mina the later people l-ākhirīna
And a company of the later peoples.
وَأَصْحَـٰبُ And (the) companions wa-aṣḥābu (of) the left l-shimāli what mā (are the) companions aṣḥābu (of) the left l-shimāli
And the companions of the left - what are the companions of the left?
فِى In fī scorching fire samūmin and scalding water waḥamīmin
[They will be] in scorching fire and scalding water
وَظِلٍّۢ And a shade waẓillin of min black smoke yaḥmūmin
And a shade of black smoke,
لَّا Not lā cool bāridin and not walā pleasant karīmin
Neither cool nor beneficial.
إِنَّهُمْ Indeed, they innahum were kānū before qabla that dhālika indulging in affluence mut'rafīna
Indeed they were, before that, indulging in affluence,
وَكَانُوا۟ And were wakānū persisting yuṣirrūna in ʿalā the sin l-ḥinthi the great l-ʿaẓīmi
And they used to persist in the great violation,1
وَكَانُوا۟ And they used (to) wakānū say yaqūlūna When a-idhā we die mit'nā and become wakunnā dust turāban and bones waʿiẓāman will we a-innā surely be resurrected lamabʿūthūna
And they used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected?
أَوَءَابَآؤُنَا And also our fathers awaābāunā former l-awalūna
And our forefathers [as well]?"
قُلْ Say qul Indeed inna the former l-awalīna and the later people wal-ākhirīna
Say, [O Muḥammad], "Indeed, the former and later peoples
لَمَجْمُوعُونَ Surely, will be gathered lamajmūʿūna for ilā (the) appointment mīqāti (of) a Day yawmin well-known maʿlūmin
Are to be gathered together for the appointment of a known Day."
ثُمَّ Then thumma indeed you innakum O those astray ayyuhā O those astray l-ḍālūna the deniers l-mukadhibūna
Then indeed you, O those astray [who are] deniers,
لَـَٔاكِلُونَ Will surely eat laākilūna from min (the) tree shajarin of min Zaqqum zaqqūmin
Will be eating from trees of zaqqūm
فَمَالِـُٔونَ Then will fill famāliūna with it min'hā the bellies l-buṭūna
And filling with it your bellies
فَشَـٰرِبُونَ And drink fashāribūna over it ʿalayhi [from] mina the scalding water l-ḥamīmi
And drinking on top of it from scalding water.
فَشَـٰرِبُونَ And will drink fashāribūna (as) drinking shur'ba (of) the thirsty camels l-hīmi
And will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels.
هَـٰذَا This hādhā (is) their hospitality nuzuluhum (on the) Day yawma (of) Judgment l-dīni
That is their accommodation on the Day of Recompense.
نَحْنُ We naḥnu [We] created you khalaqnākum so why (do) not falawlā you admit the truth tuṣaddiqūna
We have created you, so why do you not believe?
أَفَرَءَيْتُم Do you see afara-aytum what mā you emit tum'nūna
Have you seen that which you emit?1
ءَأَنتُمْ Is it you a-antum who create it takhluqūnahu or am (are) We naḥnu the Creators l-khāliqūna
Is it you who creates it, or are We the Creator?
نَحْنُ We naḥnu [We] have decreed qaddarnā among you baynakumu the death l-mawta and not wamā We naḥnu (are) outrun bimasbūqīna
We have decreed death among you, and We are not to be outdone
عَلَىٰٓ In ʿalā that an We (will) change nubaddila your likeness[es] amthālakum and produce you wanunshi-akum in fī what mā not lā you know taʿlamūna
In that We will change your likenesses and produce you in that [form] which you do not know.1
وَلَقَدْ And certainly walaqad you know ʿalim'tumu the creation l-nashata the first l-ūlā so why not falawlā you take heed tadhakkarūna
And you have already known the first creation, so will you not remember?
أَفَرَءَيْتُم And do you see afara-aytum what mā you sow taḥruthūna
And have you seen that [seed] which you sow?
ءَأَنتُمْ Is it you (who) a-antum cause it to grow tazraʿūnahu or am (are) We naḥnu the Ones Who grow l-zāriʿūna
Is it you who makes it grow, or are We the grower?
لَوْ If law We willed nashāu We (would) surely, make it lajaʿalnāhu debris ḥuṭāman then you would remain faẓaltum wondering tafakkahūna
If We willed, We could make it [dry] debris, and you would remain in wonder,1
إِنَّا Indeed, we innā surely are laden with debt lamugh'ramūna
[Saying], "Indeed, we are [now] in debt;
بَلْ Nay bal we naḥnu (are) deprived maḥrūmūna
Rather, we have been deprived."
أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ Do you see afara-aytumu the water l-māa which alladhī you drink tashrabūna
And have you seen the water that you drink?
ءَأَنتُمْ Is it you a-antum who send it down anzaltumūhu from mina the rain clouds l-muz'ni or am We naḥnu (are) the Ones to send l-munzilūna
Is it you who brought it down from the clouds, or is it We who bring it down?
لَوْ If law We willed nashāu We (could) make it jaʿalnāhu salty ujājan then why are you not grateful falawlā then why are you not grateful tashkurūna
If We willed, We could make it bitter, so why are you not grateful?
أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ Do you see afara-aytumu the Fire l-nāra which allatī you ignite tūrūna
And have you seen the fire that you ignite?
ءَأَنتُمْ Is it you a-antum who produced anshatum its tree shajaratahā or am We naḥnu (are) the Producers l-munshiūna
Is it you who produced its tree, or are We the producer?
نَحْنُ We naḥnu have made it jaʿalnāhā a reminder tadhkiratan and a provision wamatāʿan for the wayfarers in the desert lil'muq'wīna
We have made it a reminder1 and provision for the travelers,2
فَسَبِّحْ So glorify fasabbiḥ (the) name bi-is'mi (of) your Lord rabbika the Most Great l-ʿaẓīmi
So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great.
۞ فَلَآ But nay falā I swear uq'simu by setting bimawāqiʿi (of) the stars l-nujūmi
Then I swear by the setting of the stars,1
وَإِنَّهُۥ And indeed, it wa-innahu (is) surely an oath laqasamun if law you know taʿlamūna great ʿaẓīmun
And indeed, it is an oath - if you could know - [most] great.
إِنَّهُۥ Indeed, it innahu (is) surely, a Quran laqur'ānun noble karīmun
Indeed, it is a noble Qur’ān.
فِى In fī a Book kitābin well-guarded maknūnin
In a Register well-protected;1.
لَّا None lā touch it yamassuhu except illā the purified l-muṭaharūna
None touch it except the purified [i.e., the angels].
تَنزِيلٌۭ A Revelation tanzīlun from min (the) Lord rabbi (of) the worlds l-ʿālamīna
[It is] a revelation from the Lord of the worlds.
أَفَبِهَـٰذَا Then is it to this afabihādhā statement l-ḥadīthi that you antum (are) indifferent mud'hinūna
Then is it to this statement that you are indifferent
وَتَجْعَلُونَ And you make watajʿalūna your provision riz'qakum that you annakum deny tukadhibūna
And make [the thanks for] your provision that you deny [the Provider]?
فَلَوْلَآ Then why not falawlā when idhā it reaches balaghati the throat l-ḥul'qūma
Then why, when it [i.e., the soul at death] reaches the throat
وَأَنتُمْ And you wa-antum (at) that time ḥīna-idhin look on tanẓurūna
And you are at that time looking on -
وَنَحْنُ And We wanaḥnu (are) nearer aqrabu to him ilayhi than you minkum but walākin you (do) not see lā you (do) not see tub'ṣirūna
And We [i.e., Our angels] are nearer to him than you, but you do not see -
فَلَوْلَآ Then why not falawlā if in you are kuntum not ghayra to be recompensed madīnīna
Then why do you not, if you are not to be recompensed,
تَرْجِعُونَهَآ Bring it back tarjiʿūnahā if in you are kuntum truthful ṣādiqīna
Bring it back,1 if you should be truthful?
فَأَمَّآ Then fa-ammā if in he was kāna of mina those brought near l-muqarabīna
And if he [i.e., the deceased] was of those brought near [to Allāh],
فَرَوْحٌۭ Then rest farawḥun and bounty warayḥānun and a Garden wajannatu (of) Pleasure naʿīmin
Then [for him is] rest and bounty and a garden of pleasure.
وَأَمَّآ And wa-ammā if in he was kāna of min (the) companions aṣḥābi (of) the right l-yamīni
And if he was of the companions of the right,
فَسَلَـٰمٌۭ Then, peace fasalāmun for you laka [from] min (the) companions aṣḥābi (of) the right l-yamīni
Then [the angels will say], "Peace for you; [you are] from the companions of the right."
وَأَمَّآ But wa-ammā if in he was kāna of mina the deniers l-mukadhibīna the astray l-ḍālīna
But if he was of the deniers [who were] astray,
فَنُزُلٌۭ Then, hospitality fanuzulun of min (the) scalding water ḥamīmin
Then [for him is] accommodation of scalding water
وَتَصْلِيَةُ And burning wataṣliyatu (in) Hellfire jaḥīmin
And burning in Hellfire.
إِنَّ Indeed inna this hādhā surely, it lahuwa (is the) truth ḥaqqu certain l-yaqīni
Indeed, this is the true certainty,
فَسَبِّحْ So glorify fasabbiḥ (the) name bi-is'mi (of) your Lord rabbika the Most Great l-ʿaẓīmi
So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great.
