The Moon

القمر
ٱقْتَرَبَتِ Has come near iq'tarabati the Hour l-sāʿatu and has split wa-inshaqqa the moon l-qamaru
The Hour has come near, and the moon has split [in two].1
وَإِن And if wa-in they see yaraw a Sign āyatan they turn away yuʿ'riḍū and say wayaqūlū Magic siḥ'run continuing mus'tamirrun
And if they see a sign [i.e., miracle], they turn away and say, "Passing magic."1
وَكَذَّبُوا۟ And they denied wakadhabū and followed wa-ittabaʿū their desires ahwāahum but (for) every wakullu matter amrin (will be a) settlement mus'taqirrun
And they denied and followed their inclinations. But for every matter is a [time of] settlement.
وَلَقَدْ And certainly walaqad has come to them jāahum of mina the information l-anbāi wherein mā wherein fīhi (is) deterrence muz'dajarun
And there has already come to them of information that in which there is deterrence.
حِكْمَةٌۢ Wisdom ḥik'matun perfect bālighatun but not famā will avail tugh'ni the warnings l-nudhuru
Extensive wisdom - but warning does not avail [them].
فَتَوَلَّ So turn away fatawalla from them ʿanhum (The) Day yawma will call yadʿu the caller l-dāʿi to ilā a thing shayin terrible nukurin
So leave them, [O Muḥammad]. The Day the Caller1 calls to something forbidding,
خُشَّعًا (Will be) humbled khushaʿan their eyes abṣāruhum they will come forth yakhrujūna from mina the graves l-ajdāthi as if they (were) ka-annahum locusts jarādun spreading muntashirun
Their eyes humbled, they will emerge from the graves as if they were locusts spreading,
مُّهْطِعِينَ Racing ahead muh'ṭiʿīna towards ilā the caller l-dāʿi Will say yaqūlu the disbelievers l-kāfirūna This hādhā (is) a Day yawmun difficult ʿasirun
Racing ahead toward the Caller. The disbelievers will say, "This is a difficult Day."
۞ كَذَّبَتْ Denied kadhabat before them qablahum (the) people qawmu (of) Nuh nūḥin and they denied fakadhabū Our slave ʿabdanā and said waqālū A madman majnūnun and he was repelled wa-uz'dujira
The people of Noah denied before them, and they denied Our servant and said, "A madman," and he was repelled.
فَدَعَا So he called fadaʿā his Lord rabbahu I am annī one overpowered maghlūbun so help fa-intaṣir
So he invoked his Lord, "Indeed, I am overpowered, so help."
فَفَتَحْنَآ So We opened fafataḥnā (the) gates abwāba (of) heaven l-samāi with water bimāin pouring down mun'hamirin
Then We opened the gates of the heaven with rain pouring down
وَفَجَّرْنَا And We caused to burst wafajjarnā the earth l-arḍa (with) springs ʿuyūnan so met fal-taqā the water(s) l-māu for ʿalā a matter amrin already qad predestined qudira
And caused the earth to burst with springs, and the waters met for a matter already predestined.
وَحَمَلْنَـٰهُ And We carried him waḥamalnāhu on ʿalā (ark) made of planks dhāti (ark) made of planks alwāḥin and nails wadusurin
And We carried him on a [construction of] planks and nails,
تَجْرِى Sailing tajrī before Our eyes bi-aʿyuninā a reward jazāan for (he) who liman was kāna denied kufira
Sailing under Our observation as reward for he who had been denied.
وَلَقَد And certainly walaqad We left it taraknāhā (as) a Sign āyatan so is (there) fahal any min who will receive admonition muddakirin
And We left it as a sign, so is there any who will remember?
فَكَيْفَ So how fakayfa was kāna My punishment ʿadhābī and My warnings wanudhuri
And how [severe] were My punishment and warning.1
وَلَقَدْ And certainly walaqad We have made easy yassarnā the Quran l-qur'āna for remembrance lildhik'ri so is (there) fahal any min who will receive admonition muddakirin
And We have certainly made the Qur’ān easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?
كَذَّبَتْ Denied kadhabat Aad ʿādun so how fakayfa was kāna My punishment ʿadhābī and My warnings wanudhuri
ʿAad denied; and how [severe] were My punishment and warning.
إِنَّآ Indeed, We innā [We] sent arsalnā upon them ʿalayhim a wind rīḥan furious ṣarṣaran on fī a day yawmi (of) misfortune naḥsin continuous mus'tamirrin
Indeed, We sent upon them a screaming wind on a day of continuous misfortune,
تَنزِعُ Plucking out tanziʿu men l-nāsa as if they (were) ka-annahum trunks aʿjāzu (of) date-palms nakhlin uprooted munqaʿirin
Extracting the people1 as if they were trunks of palm trees uprooted.
فَكَيْفَ So how fakayfa was kāna My punishment ʿadhābī and My warnings wanudhuri
And how [severe] were My punishment and warning.
وَلَقَدْ And certainly walaqad We have made easy yassarnā the Quran l-qur'āna for remembrance lildhik'ri so is (there) fahal any min who will receive admonition muddakirin
And We have certainly made the Qur’ān easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?
كَذَّبَتْ Denied kadhabat Thamud thamūdu the warnings bil-nudhuri
Thamūd denied the warning.
فَقَالُوٓا۟ And said faqālū Is (it) a human being abasharan among us minnā one wāḥidan (that) we should follow him nattabiʿuhu Indeed, we innā then idhan (will be) surely in lafī error ḍalālin and madness wasuʿurin
And said, "Is it one human being1 among us that we should follow? Indeed, we would then be in error and madness.
أَءُلْقِىَ Has been sent a-ul'qiya the Reminder l-dhik'ru to him ʿalayhi from min among us bayninā Nay bal he huwa (is) a liar kadhābun insolent ashirun
Has the message been sent down upon him from among us? Rather, he is an insolent liar."
سَيَعْلَمُونَ They will know sayaʿlamūna tomorrow ghadan who mani (is) the liar l-kadhābu the insolent one l-ashiru
They will know tomorrow who is the insolent liar.
إِنَّا Indeed, We innā (are) sending mur'silū the she-camel l-nāqati (as) a trial fit'natan for them lahum so watch them fa-ir'taqib'hum and be patient wa-iṣ'ṭabir
Indeed, We are sending the she-camel as trial for them, so watch them and be patient.1
وَنَبِّئْهُمْ And inform them wanabbi'hum that anna the water l-māa (is) to be shared qis'matun between them baynahum each kullu drink shir'bin attended muḥ'taḍarun
And inform them that the water is shared between them,1 each [day of] drink attended [by turn].
فَنَادَوْا۟ But they called fanādaw their companion ṣāḥibahum and he took fataʿāṭā and hamstrung faʿaqara
But they called their companion,1 and he dared2 and hamstrung [her].
فَكَيْفَ So how fakayfa was kāna My punishment ʿadhābī and My warnings wanudhuri
And how [severe] were My punishment and warning.
إِنَّآ Indeed, We innā [We] sent arsalnā upon them ʿalayhim thunderous blast ṣayḥatan single wāḥidatan and they became fakānū like dry twig fragments kahashīmi (used by) a fence builder l-muḥ'taẓiri
Indeed, We sent upon them one shriek [i.e., blast from the sky], and they became like the dry twig fragments of an [animal] pen.
وَلَقَدْ And certainly walaqad We have made easy yassarnā the Quran l-qur'āna for remembrance lildhik'ri so is (there) fahal any min who will receive admonition muddakirin
And We have certainly made the Qur’ān easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?
كَذَّبَتْ Denied kadhabat (the) people qawmu (of) Lut lūṭin the warnings bil-nudhuri
The people of Lot denied the warning.
إِنَّآ Indeed, We innā [We] sent arsalnā upon them ʿalayhim a storm of stones ḥāṣiban except illā (the) family āla (of) Lut lūṭin We saved them najjaynāhum by dawn bisaḥarin
Indeed, We sent upon them a storm of stones, except the family of Lot - We saved them before dawn.
نِّعْمَةًۭ (As) a favor niʿ'matan from min Us ʿindinā Thus kadhālika We reward najzī (one) who man (is) grateful shakara
As favor from Us. Thus do We reward he who is grateful.
وَلَقَدْ And certainly walaqad he warned them andharahum (of) Our seizure baṭshatanā but they disputed fatamāraw the warnings bil-nudhuri
And he had already warned them of Our assault, but they disputed the warning.
وَلَقَدْ And certainly walaqad they demanded from him rāwadūhu they demanded from him ʿan his guests ḍayfihi so We blinded faṭamasnā their eyes aʿyunahum So taste fadhūqū My punishment ʿadhābī and My warnings wanudhuri
And they had demanded from him his guests, but We obliterated their eyes, [saying], "Taste My punishment and warning."
وَلَقَدْ And certainly walaqad seized them in the morning ṣabbaḥahum early buk'ratan a punishment ʿadhābun abiding mus'taqirrun
And there came upon them by morning an abiding punishment.
فَذُوقُوا۟ So taste fadhūqū My punishment ʿadhābī and My warnings wanudhuri
So taste My punishment and warning.
وَلَقَدْ And certainly walaqad We have made easy yassarnā the Quran l-qur'āna for remembrance lildhik'ri so is (there) fahal any min who will receive admonition muddakirin
And We have certainly made the Qur’ān easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?
وَلَقَدْ And certainly walaqad came jāa (to the) people āla (of) Firaun fir'ʿawna warnings l-nudhuru
And there certainly came to the people of Pharaoh warning.
كَذَّبُوا۟ They denied kadhabū Our Signs biāyātinā all of them kullihā so We seized them fa-akhadhnāhum (with) a seizure akhdha (of) All-Mighty ʿazīzin (the) Powerful One muq'tadirin
They denied Our signs, all of them, so We seized them with a seizure of one Exalted in Might and Perfect in Ability.
أَكُفَّارُكُمْ Are your disbelievers akuffārukum better khayrun than min those ulāikum or am for you lakum (is) an exemption barāatun in fī the Scriptures l-zuburi
Are your disbelievers better than those [former ones], or have you immunity in the scriptures?
أَمْ Or am (do) they say yaqūlūna We naḥnu (are) an assembly jamīʿun helping (each other) muntaṣirun
Or do they say, "We are an assembly supporting [each other]"?
سَيُهْزَمُ Soon will be defeated sayuh'zamu (their) assembly l-jamʿu and they will turn wayuwallūna (their) backs l-dubura
[Their] assembly will be defeated, and they will turn their backs [in retreat].1
بَلِ Nay bali the Hour l-sāʿatu (is) their promised time mawʿiduhum and the Hour wal-sāʿatu (will be) more grievous adhā and more bitter wa-amarru
But the Hour is their appointment [for due punishment], and the Hour is more disastrous and more bitter.
إِنَّ Indeed inna the criminals l-muj'rimīna (are) in fī an error ḍalālin and madness wasuʿurin
Indeed, the criminals are in error and madness.1.
يَوْمَ (The) Day yawma they will be dragged yus'ḥabūna into fī the Fire l-nāri on ʿalā their faces wujūhihim Taste dhūqū (the) touch massa (of) Hell saqara
The Day they are dragged into the Fire on their faces [it will be said], "Taste the touch of Saqar."1
إِنَّا Indeed, [We] innā every kulla thing shayin We created it khalaqnāhu by a measure biqadarin
Indeed, all things We created with predestination.
وَمَآ And not wamā (is) Our Command amrunā but illā one wāḥidatun like the twinkling kalamḥin (of) the eye bil-baṣari
And Our command is but one, like a glance of the eye.
وَلَقَدْ And certainly walaqad We destroyed ahlaknā your kinds ashyāʿakum so is (there) fahal any min who will receive admonition muddakirin
And We have already destroyed your kinds,1 so is there any who will remember?
وَكُلُّ And every wakullu thing shayin they did faʿalūhu (is) in fī the written records l-zuburi
And everything they did is in written records.
وَكُلُّ And every wakullu small ṣaghīrin and big wakabīrin (is) written down mus'taṭarun
And every small and great [thing] is inscribed.
إِنَّ Indeed inna the righteous l-mutaqīna (will be) in fī gardens jannātin and river wanaharin
Indeed, the righteous will be among gardens and rivers,
فِى In fī a seat maqʿadi (of) honor ṣid'qin near ʿinda a King malīkin Most Powerful muq'tadirin
In a seat of honor near a Sovereign, Perfect in Ability.1
