An-Najm
The Star
﷽
النجم
وَٱلنَّجْمِ By the star wal-najmi when idhā it goes down hawā
By the star when it descends,
مَا Not mā has strayed ḍalla your companion ṣāḥibukum and not wamā has he erred ghawā
Your companion [i.e., Muḥammad] has not strayed, nor has he erred,
وَمَا And not wamā he speaks yanṭiqu from ʿani the desire l-hawā
Nor does he speak from [his own] inclination.
إِنْ Not in it huwa (is) except illā a revelation waḥyun revealed yūḥā
It is not but a revelation revealed,
عَلَّمَهُۥ Has taught him ʿallamahu the (one) mighty shadīdu (in) power l-quwā
Taught to him by one intense in strength [i.e., Gabriel] -
ذُو Possessor of soundness dhū Possessor of soundness mirratin And he rose fa-is'tawā
One of soundness.1 And he rose to [his] true form2
وَهُوَ While he wahuwa (was) in the horizon bil-ufuqi the highest l-aʿlā
While he was in the higher [part of the] horizon.1
ثُمَّ Then thumma he approached danā and came down fatadallā
Then he approached and descended
فَكَانَ And was fakāna (at) a distance qāba (of) two bow-(lengths) qawsayni or aw nearer adnā
And was at a distance of two bow lengths or nearer.
فَأَوْحَىٰٓ So he revealed fa-awḥā to ilā His slave ʿabdihi what mā he revealed awḥā
And he revealed to His Servant1 what he revealed [i.e., conveyed].
مَا Not mā lied kadhaba the heart l-fuādu what mā it saw raā
The heart1 did not lie [about] what it saw.
أَفَتُمَـٰرُونَهُۥ Then will you dispute with him afatumārūnahu about ʿalā what mā he saw yarā
So will you dispute with him over what he saw?
وَلَقَدْ And certainly walaqad he saw him raāhu (in) descent nazlatan another ukh'rā
And he certainly saw him in another descent1
عِندَ Near ʿinda (the) Lote Tree sid'rati (of) the utmost boundary l-muntahā
At the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary -
عِندَهَا Near it ʿindahā (is the) Garden jannatu (of) Abode l-mawā
Near it is the Garden of Refuge [i.e., Paradise] -
إِذْ When idh covered yaghshā the Lote Tree l-sid'rata what mā covers yaghshā
When there covered the Lote Tree that which covered [it].1
مَا Not mā swerved zāgha the sight l-baṣaru and not wamā it transgressed ṭaghā
The sight [of the Prophet (ﷺ)] did not swerve, nor did it transgress [its limit].
لَقَدْ Certainly laqad he saw raā of min (the) Signs āyāti (of) his Lord rabbihi the Greatest l-kub'rā
He certainly saw of the greatest signs of his Lord.
أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ So have you seen afara-aytumu the Lat l-lāta and the Uzza wal-ʿuzā
So have you considered al-Lāt and al-ʿUzzā?
وَمَنَوٰةَ And Manat wamanata the third l-thālithata the other l-ukh'rā
And Manāt, the third - the other one?1
أَلَكُمُ Is for you alakumu the male l-dhakaru and for Him walahu the female l-unthā
Is the male for you and for Him the female?
تِلْكَ This til'ka then idhan (is) a division qis'matun unfair ḍīzā
That, then, is an unjust division.1
إِنْ Not in they hiya (are) except illā names asmāon you have named them sammaytumūhā you antum and your forefathers waābāukum not mā has Allah sent down anzala has Allah sent down l-lahu for it bihā any min authority sul'ṭānin Not in they follow yattabiʿūna except illā assumption l-ẓana and what wamā desire tahwā the(ir) souls l-anfusu And certainly walaqad has come to them jāahum from min their Lord rabbihimu the guidance l-hudā
They are not but [mere] names you have named them - you and your forefathers - for which Allāh has sent down no authority. They follow not except assumption and what [their] souls desire, and there has already come to them from their Lord guidance.
أَمْ Or am (is) for man lil'insāni what mā he wishes tamannā
Or is there for man whatever he wishes?
فَلِلَّهِ But for Allah falillahi (is) the last l-ākhiratu and the first wal-ūlā
Rather, to Allāh belongs the Hereafter and the first [life].
۞ وَكَم And how many wakam of min (the) Angels malakin in fī the heavens l-samāwāti not lā will avail tugh'nī their intercession shafāʿatuhum anything shayan except illā after min after baʿdi [that] an Allah has given permission yadhana Allah has given permission l-lahu for whom liman He wills yashāu and approves wayarḍā
And how many angels there are in the heavens whose intercession will not avail at all except [only] after Allāh has permitted [it] to whom He wills and approves.
إِنَّ Indeed inna those who alladhīna (do) not lā believe yu'minūna in the Hereafter bil-ākhirati surely they name layusammūna the Angels l-malāikata name(s) tasmiyata (of) female l-unthā
Indeed, those who do not believe in the Hereafter name the angels female names,
وَمَا And not wamā for them lahum about it bihi any min knowledge ʿil'min Not in they follow yattabiʿūna but illā assumption l-ẓana And indeed wa-inna the assumption l-ẓana (does) not lā avail yugh'nī against mina the truth l-ḥaqi anything shayan
And they have thereof no knowledge. They follow not except assumption, and indeed, assumption avails not against the truth at all.
فَأَعْرِضْ So turn away fa-aʿriḍ from ʿan (him) who man turns away tawallā from ʿan Our Reminder dhik'rinā and not walam he desires yurid except illā the life l-ḥayata (of) the world l-dun'yā
So turn away from whoever turns his back on Our message and desires not except the worldly life.
ذَٰلِكَ That dhālika (is) their sum mablaghuhum of mina knowledge l-ʿil'mi Indeed inna your Lord rabbaka (is) He (Who) huwa knows best aʿlamu (he) who biman strays ḍalla from ʿan His Path sabīlihi and He wahuwa knows best aʿlamu (he) who bimani is guided ih'tadā
That is their sum of knowledge. Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who strays from His way, and He is most knowing of who is guided.
وَلِلَّهِ And for Allah walillahi (is) whatever mā (is) in fī the heavens l-samāwāti and whatever wamā (is) in fī the earth l-arḍi that He may recompense liyajziya those who alladhīna do evil asāū with what bimā they have done ʿamilū and recompense wayajziya those who alladhīna do good aḥsanū with the best bil-ḥus'nā
And to Allāh belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth - that He may recompense those who do evil with [the penalty of] what they have done and recompense those who do good with the best [reward] -
ٱلَّذِينَ Those who alladhīna avoid yajtanibūna great kabāira sins l-ith'mi and the immoralities wal-fawāḥisha except illā the small faults l-lamama indeed inna your Lord rabbaka (is) vast wāsiʿu (in) forgiveness l-maghfirati He huwa (is) most knowing about you aʿlamu (is) most knowing about you bikum when idh He produced you ansha-akum from mina the earth l-arḍi and when wa-idh you (were) antum fetuses ajinnatun in fī (the) wombs buṭūni (of) your mothers ummahātikum So (do) not falā ascribe purity tuzakkū (to) yourselves anfusakum He huwa knows best aʿlamu (he) who bimani fears ittaqā
Those who avoid the major sins and immoralities, only [committing] slight ones. Indeed, your Lord is vast in forgiveness. He was most knowing of you when He produced you from the earth and when you were fetuses in the wombs of your mothers. So do not claim yourselves to be pure; He is most knowing of who fears Him.
أَفَرَءَيْتَ Did you see afara-ayta the one who alladhī turned away tawallā
Have you seen the one who turned away
وَأَعْطَىٰ And gave wa-aʿṭā a little qalīlan and withheld wa-akdā
And gave a little and [then] refrained?
أَعِندَهُۥ Is with him aʿindahu (the) knowledge ʿil'mu (of) the unseen l-ghaybi so he fahuwa sees yarā
Does he have knowledge of the unseen, so he sees?1
أَمْ Or am not lam he was informed yunabba with what bimā (was) in fī (the) Scriptures ṣuḥufi (of) Musa mūsā
Or has he not been informed of what was in the scriptures of Moses
وَإِبْرَٰهِيمَ And Ibrahim wa-ib'rāhīma who alladhī fulfilled waffā
And [of] Abraham, who fulfilled [his obligations] -
أَلَّا That not allā will bear taziru a bearer of burdens wāziratun (the) burden wiz'ra (of) another ukh'rā
That no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another
وَأَن And that wa-an is not laysa for man lil'insāni except illā what mā he strives (for) saʿā
And that there is not for man except that [good] for which he strives
وَأَنَّ And that wa-anna his striving saʿyahu will soon sawfa be seen yurā
And that his effort is going to be seen -
ثُمَّ Then thumma he will be recompensed for it yuj'zāhu the recompense l-jazāa the fullest l-awfā
Then he will be recompensed for it with the fullest recompense -
وَأَنَّ And that wa-anna to ilā your Lord rabbika (is) the final goal l-muntahā
And that to your Lord is the finality
وَأَنَّهُۥ And that He wa-annahu [He] huwa makes (one) laugh aḍḥaka and makes (one) weep wa-abkā
And that it is He who makes [one] laugh and weep
وَأَنَّهُۥ And that He wa-annahu [He] huwa causes death amāta and gives life wa-aḥyā
And that it is He who causes death and gives life
وَأَنَّهُۥ And that He wa-annahu created khalaqa the pairs l-zawjayni the male l-dhakara and the female wal-unthā
And that He creates the two mates - the male and female -
مِن From min a semen-drop nuṭ'fatin when idhā it is emitted tum'nā
From a sperm-drop when it is emitted
وَأَنَّ And that wa-anna upon Him ʿalayhi (is) the bringing forth l-nashata another l-ukh'rā
And that [incumbent] upon Him is the other [i.e., next] creation.
وَأَنَّهُۥ And that He wa-annahu [He] huwa enriches aghnā and suffices wa-aqnā
And that it is He who enriches and suffices
وَأَنَّهُۥ And that He wa-annahu [He] huwa (is the) Lord rabbu (of) Sirius l-shiʿ'rā
And that it is He who is the Lord of Sirius1.
وَأَنَّهُۥٓ And that He wa-annahu destroyed ahlaka Aad ʿādan the first l-ūlā
And that He destroyed the first [people of] ʿAad.
وَثَمُودَا۟ And Thamud wathamūdā so not famā He spared abqā
And Thamūd - and He did not spare [them] -
وَقَوْمَ And (the) people waqawma (of) Nuh nūḥin before min before qablu Indeed, they innahum they were kānū they were hum more unjust aẓlama and more rebellious wa-aṭghā
And the people of Noah before. Indeed, it was they who were [even] more unjust and oppressing.
وَٱلْمُؤْتَفِكَةَ And the overturned cities wal-mu'tafikata He overthrew ahwā
And the overturned towns1 He hurled down.
فَغَشَّىٰهَا So covered them faghashāhā what mā covered ghashā
And covered them by that which He covered.1
فَبِأَىِّ Then which (of) fabi-ayyi the Favors ālāi (of) your Lord rabbika will you doubt tatamārā
Then which of the favors of your Lord do you doubt?
هَـٰذَا This hādhā (is) a warner nadhīrun from mina the warners l-nudhuri the former l-ūlā
This [Prophet (ﷺ)] is a warner from [i.e., like] the former warners.
أَزِفَتِ Has approached azifati the Approaching Day l-āzifatu
The Approaching Day has approached.
لَيْسَ Not is laysa for it lahā besides min besides dūni Allah l-lahi any remover kāshifatun
Of it, [from those] besides Allāh, there is no remover.
أَفَمِنْ Then of afamin this hādhā statement l-ḥadīthi you wonder taʿjabūna
Then at this statement do you wonder?
وَتَضْحَكُونَ And you laugh wataḍḥakūna and (do) not walā weep tabkūna
And you laugh and do not weep
وَأَنتُمْ While you wa-antum amuse (yourselves) sāmidūna
While you are proudly sporting?1
فَٱسْجُدُوا۟ So prostrate fa-us'judū to Allah lillahi and worship (Him) wa-uʿ'budū
So prostrate to Allāh and worship [Him].
