They ask, "When is the Day of Recompense?"
يَوْمَ A Day yawma they hum over ʿalā the Fire l-nāri will be tried yuf'tanūna

وَفِى And in wafī the heaven l-samāi (is) your provision riz'qukum and what wamā you are promised tūʿadūna
And in the heaven is your provision and whatever you are promised.
فَوَرَبِّ Then by (the) Lord fawarabbi (of) the heaven l-samāi and the earth wal-arḍi indeed, it innahu (is) surely (the) truth laḥaqqun (just) as mith'la [what] mā you annakum speak tanṭiqūna
Then by the Lord of the heaven and earth, indeed, it is truth - just as [sure as] it is that you are speaking.
هَلْ Has hal reached you atāka (the) narration ḥadīthu (of the) guests ḍayfi (of) Ibrahim ib'rāhīma the honored l-muk'ramīna
Has there reached you the story of the honored guests of Abraham?1 -
إِذْ When idh they entered dakhalū upon him ʿalayhi and said faqālū Peace salāman He said qāla Peace salāmun a people qawmun unknown munkarūna
When they entered upon him and said, "[We greet you with] peace." He answered, "[And upon you] peace; [you are] a people unknown."
فَرَاغَ Then he went farāgha to ilā his household ahlihi and came fajāa with a calf biʿij'lin fat samīnin
Then he went to his family and came with a fat [roasted] calf.
فَقَرَّبَهُۥٓ And he placed it near faqarrabahu [to] them ilayhim he said qāla Will not alā you eat takulūna
And placed it near them; he said, "Will you not eat?"
فَأَوْجَسَ Then he felt fa-awjasa from them min'hum a fear khīfatan They said qālū (Do) not lā fear takhaf and they gave him glad tidings wabasharūhu of a son bighulāmin learned ʿalīmin
And he felt from them apprehension.1 They said, "Fear not," and gave him good tidings of a learned boy.
فَأَقْبَلَتِ Then came forward fa-aqbalati his wife im'ra-atuhu with fī a loud voice ṣarratin and struck faṣakkat her face wajhahā and she said waqālat An old woman ʿajūzun barren ʿaqīmun
And his wife approached with a cry [of alarm] and struck her face and said, "[I am] a barren old woman!"
قَالُوا۟ They said qālū Thus kadhāliki said qāla your Lord rabbuki Indeed, He innahu [He] huwa (is) the All-Wise l-ḥakīmu the All-Knower l-ʿalīmu
They said, "Thus has said your Lord; indeed, He is the Wise, the Knowing."
۞ قَالَ He said qāla Then what famā (is) your mission khaṭbukum O messengers ayyuhā O messengers l-mur'salūna
[Abraham] said, "Then what is your business [here], O messengers?"
قَالُوٓا۟ They said qālū Indeed, we innā [we] have been sent ur'sil'nā to ilā a people qawmin criminal muj'rimīna
They said, "Indeed, we have been sent to a people of criminals1
لِنُرْسِلَ That we may send down linur'sila upon them ʿalayhim stones ḥijāratan of min clay ṭīnin
To send down upon them stones of clay,
مُّسَوَّمَةً Marked musawwamatan by your Lord ʿinda by your Lord rabbika for the transgressors lil'mus'rifīna
Marked in the presence of your Lord for the transgressors."
فَأَخْرَجْنَا Then We brought out fa-akhrajnā (those) who man were kāna therein fīhā of mina the believers l-mu'minīna
So We brought out whoever was in them [i.e., the cities] of the believers.
فَمَا But not famā We found wajadnā therein fīhā other than ghayra a house baytin of mina the Muslims l-mus'limīna
And We found not within them other than a [single] house of Muslims.1
وَتَرَكْنَا And We left wataraknā therein fīhā a Sign āyatan for those who lilladhīna fear yakhāfūna the punishment l-ʿadhāba the painful l-alīma
And We left therein a sign for those who fear the painful punishment.
وَفِى And in wafī Musa mūsā when idh We sent him arsalnāhu to ilā Firaun fir'ʿawna with an authority bisul'ṭānin clear mubīnin
And in Moses [was a sign], when We sent him to Pharaoh with clear authority.1
فَتَوَلَّىٰ But he turned away fatawallā with his supporters biruk'nihi and said waqāla A magician sāḥirun or aw a madman majnūnun
But he turned away with his supporters and said, "A magician or a madman."
فَأَخَذْنَـٰهُ So We took him fa-akhadhnāhu and his hosts wajunūdahu and threw them fanabadhnāhum into fī the sea l-yami while he wahuwa (was) blameworthy mulīmun
So We took him and his soldiers and cast them into the sea, and he was blameworthy.
وَفِى And in wafī Aad ʿādin when idh We sent arsalnā against them ʿalayhimu the wind l-rīḥa the barren l-ʿaqīma
And in ʿAad [was a sign], when We sent against them the barren wind.1
مَا Not mā it left tadharu any min thing shayin it came atat upon it ʿalayhi but illā it made it jaʿalathu like disintegrated ruins kal-ramīmi
It left nothing of what it came upon but that it made it like disintegrated ruins.
وَفِى And in wafī Thamud thamūda when idh was said qīla to them lahum Enjoy (yourselves) tamattaʿū for ḥattā a time ḥīnin
And in Thamūd, when it was said to them, "Enjoy yourselves for a time."
فَعَتَوْا۟ But they rebelled faʿataw against ʿan (the) Command amri (of) their Lord rabbihim so seized them fa-akhadhathumu the thunderbolt l-ṣāʿiqatu while they wahum were looking yanẓurūna
But they were insolent toward the command of their Lord, so the thunderbolt seized them while they were looking on.
فَمَا Then not famā they were able to is'taṭāʿū [of] min stand qiyāmin and not wamā they could kānū help themselves muntaṣirīna
And they were unable to arise, nor could they defend themselves.
وَقَوْمَ And (the) people waqawma (of) Nuh nūḥin before min before qablu indeed, they innahum were kānū a people qawman defiantly disobedient fāsiqīna
And [We destroyed] the people of Noah before; indeed, they were a people defiantly disobedient.
وَٱلسَّمَآءَ And the heaven wal-samāa We constructed it banaynāhā with strength bi-aydin and indeed, We wa-innā (are) surely (its) Expanders lamūsiʿūna
And the heaven We constructed with strength,1 and indeed, We are [its] expander.
وَٱلْأَرْضَ And the earth wal-arḍa We have spread it farashnāhā how excellent faniʿ'ma (are) the Spreaders l-māhidūna
And the earth We have spread out, and excellent is the preparer.
وَمِن And of wamin every kulli thing shayin We have created khalaqnā pairs zawjayni so that you may laʿallakum remember tadhakkarūna
And of all things We created two mates [i.e., counterparts]; perhaps you will remember.
فَفِرُّوٓا۟ So flee fafirrū to ilā Allah l-lahi indeed, I am innī to you lakum from Him min'hu a warner nadhīrun clear mubīnun
So flee to Allāh.1 Indeed, I am to you from Him a clear warner.
وَلَا And (do) not walā make tajʿalū with maʿa Allah l-lahi god ilāhan another ākhara Indeed, I am innī to you lakum from Him min'hu a warner nadhīrun clear mubīnun
And do not make [as equal] with Allāh another deity. Indeed, I am to you from Him a clear warner.
كَذَٰلِكَ Likewise kadhālika not mā came atā (to) those alladhīna before them min before them qablihim any min Messenger rasūlin but illā they said qālū A magician sāḥirun or aw a madman majnūnun
Similarly, there came not to those before them any messenger except that they said, "A magician or a madman."
أَتَوَاصَوْا۟ Have they transmitted it to them atawāṣaw Have they transmitted it to them bihi Nay bal they hum (are) a people qawmun transgressing ṭāghūna
Did they suggest it to them?1 Rather, they [themselves] are a transgressing people.
فَتَوَلَّ So turn away fatawalla from them ʿanhum for not famā you anta (are) to be blamed bimalūmin
So leave them, [O Muḥammad], for you are not to be blamed.
وَذَكِّرْ And remind wadhakkir for indeed fa-inna the reminder l-dhik'rā benefits tanfaʿu the believers l-mu'minīna
And remind, for indeed, the reminder benefits the believers.
وَمَا And not wamā I have created khalaqtu the jinn l-jina and the mankind wal-insa except illā that they worship Me liyaʿbudūni
And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.
مَآ Not mā I want urīdu from them min'hum any min provision riz'qin and not wamā I want urīdu that an they (should) feed Me yuṭ'ʿimūni
I do not want from them any provision, nor do I want them to feed Me.
إِنَّ Indeed inna Allah l-laha He huwa (is) the All-Provider l-razāqu Possessor dhū (of) Power l-quwati the Strong l-matīnu
Indeed, it is Allāh who is the [continual] Provider,1 the firm possessor of strength.
فَإِنَّ So indeed fa-inna for those who lilladhīna do wrong ẓalamū (is) a portion dhanūban like mith'la (the) portion dhanūbi (of) their companions aṣḥābihim so let them not ask Me to hasten falā so let them not ask Me to hasten yastaʿjilūni
And indeed, for those who have wronged is a portion [of punishment] like the portion of their companions [i.e., predecessors], so let them not impatiently urge Me.
فَوَيْلٌۭ Then woe fawaylun to those who lilladhīna disbelieve kafarū from min their Day yawmihimu which alladhī they are promised yūʿadūna
And woe to those who have disbelieved from their Day which they are promised.
