Adh-Dhāriyāt

The Winnowing Winds

الذاريات

وَٱلذَّٰرِيَـٰتِ

By those scattering

wal-dhāriyāti

ذَرْوًۭا

dispersing

dharwan

١

By the [winds] scattering [dust], dispersing [it]

— Saheeh International

فَٱلْحَـٰمِلَـٰتِ

And those carrying

fal-ḥāmilāti

وِقْرًۭا

a load

wiq'ran

٢

And the [clouds] carrying a load [of water]

— Saheeh International

فَٱلْجَـٰرِيَـٰتِ

And those sailing

fal-jāriyāti

يُسْرًۭا

(with) ease

yus'ran

٣

And the ships sailing with ease

— Saheeh International

فَٱلْمُقَسِّمَـٰتِ

And those distributing

fal-muqasimāti

أَمْرًا

Command

amran

٤

And the [angels] apportioning [each] matter,

— Saheeh International

إِنَّمَا

Indeed, what

innamā

تُوعَدُونَ

you are promised

tūʿadūna

لَصَادِقٌۭ

(is) surely true

laṣādiqun

٥

Indeed, what you are promised is true.

— Saheeh International

وَإِنَّ

And indeed

wa-inna

ٱلدِّينَ

the Judgment

l-dīna

لَوَٰقِعٌۭ

(is) surely to occur

lawāqiʿun

٦

And indeed, the recompense is to occur.

— Saheeh International

وَٱلسَّمَآءِ

By the heaven

wal-samāi

ذَاتِ

full of

dhāti

ٱلْحُبُكِ

pathways

l-ḥubuki

٧

By the heaven containing pathways,1

— Saheeh International

إِنَّكُمْ

Indeed, you

innakum

لَفِى

(are) surely in

lafī

قَوْلٍۢ

a speech

qawlin

مُّخْتَلِفٍۢ

differing

mukh'talifin

٨

Indeed, you are in differing speech.1

— Saheeh International

يُؤْفَكُ

Deluded away

yu'faku

عَنْهُ

from it

ʿanhu

مَنْ

(is he) who

man

أُفِكَ

is deluded

ufika

٩

Deluded away from it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is he who is deluded.

— Saheeh International

قُتِلَ

Cursed be

qutila

ٱلْخَرَّٰصُونَ

the liars

l-kharāṣūna

١٠

Destroyed are the misinformers1

— Saheeh International

ٱلَّذِينَ

Those who

alladhīna

هُمْ

[they]

hum

فِى

(are) in

غَمْرَةٍۢ

flood

ghamratin

سَاهُونَ

(of) heedlessness

sāhūna

١١

Who are within a flood [of confusion] and heedless.

— Saheeh International

يَسْـَٔلُونَ

They ask

yasalūna

أَيَّانَ

When

ayyāna

يَوْمُ

(is the) Day

yawmu

ٱلدِّينِ

(of) Judgment

l-dīni

١٢

They ask, "When is the Day of Recompense?"

— Saheeh International

يَوْمَ

A Day

yawma

هُمْ

they

hum

عَلَى

over

ʿalā

ٱلنَّارِ

the Fire

l-nāri

يُفْتَنُونَ

will be tried

yuf'tanūna

١٣

[It is] the Day they will be tormented over the Fire.

— Saheeh International

ذُوقُوا۟

Taste

dhūqū

فِتْنَتَكُمْ

your trial

fit'natakum

هَـٰذَا

This

hādhā

ٱلَّذِى

(is) what

alladhī

كُنتُم

you were

kuntum

بِهِۦ

for it

bihi

تَسْتَعْجِلُونَ

seeking to hasten

tastaʿjilūna

١٤

[And will be told], "Taste your torment. This is that for which you were impatient."

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ

the righteous

l-mutaqīna

فِى

(will be) in

جَنَّـٰتٍۢ

Gardens

jannātin

وَعُيُونٍ

and springs

waʿuyūnin

١٥

Indeed, the righteous will be among gardens and springs,

— Saheeh International

ءَاخِذِينَ

Taking

ākhidhīna

مَآ

what

ءَاتَىٰهُمْ

their Lord has given them

ātāhum

رَبُّهُمْ ۚ

their Lord has given them

rabbuhum

إِنَّهُمْ

Indeed, they

innahum

كَانُوا۟

were

kānū

قَبْلَ

before

qabla

ذَٰلِكَ

that

dhālika

مُحْسِنِينَ

good-doers

muḥ'sinīna

١٦

Accepting what their Lord has given them. Indeed, they were before that doers of good.

— Saheeh International

كَانُوا۟

They used to

kānū

قَلِيلًۭا

little

qalīlan

مِّنَ

of

mina

ٱلَّيْلِ

the night

al-layli

مَا

[what]

يَهْجَعُونَ

sleep

yahjaʿūna

١٧

They used to sleep but little of the night,1

— Saheeh International

وَبِٱلْأَسْحَارِ

And in the hours before dawn

wabil-asḥāri

هُمْ

they

hum

يَسْتَغْفِرُونَ

would ask forgiveness

yastaghfirūna

١٨

And in the hours before dawn they would ask forgiveness,

— Saheeh International

وَفِىٓ

And in

wafī

أَمْوَٰلِهِمْ

their wealth

amwālihim

حَقٌّۭ

(was the) right

ḥaqqun

لِّلسَّآئِلِ

(of) those who asked

lilssāili

وَٱلْمَحْرُومِ

and the deprived

wal-maḥrūmi

١٩

And from their properties was [given] the right of the [needy] petitioner and the deprived.

— Saheeh International

وَفِى

And in

wafī

ٱلْأَرْضِ

the earth

l-arḍi

ءَايَـٰتٌۭ

(are) signs

āyātun

لِّلْمُوقِنِينَ

for those who are certain

lil'mūqinīna

٢٠

And on the earth are signs for the certain [in faith]

— Saheeh International

وَفِىٓ

And in

wafī

أَنفُسِكُمْ ۚ

yourselves

anfusikum

أَفَلَا

Then will not

afalā

تُبْصِرُونَ

you see

tub'ṣirūna

٢١

And in yourselves. Then will you not see?

— Saheeh International

وَفِى

And in

wafī

ٱلسَّمَآءِ

the heaven

l-samāi

رِزْقُكُمْ

(is) your provision

riz'qukum

وَمَا

and what

wamā

تُوعَدُونَ

you are promised

tūʿadūna

٢٢

And in the heaven is your provision and whatever you are promised.

— Saheeh International

فَوَرَبِّ

Then by (the) Lord

fawarabbi

ٱلسَّمَآءِ

(of) the heaven

l-samāi

وَٱلْأَرْضِ

and the earth

wal-arḍi

إِنَّهُۥ

indeed, it

innahu

لَحَقٌّۭ

(is) surely (the) truth

laḥaqqun

مِّثْلَ

(just) as

mith'la

مَآ

[what]

أَنَّكُمْ

you

annakum

تَنطِقُونَ

speak

tanṭiqūna

٢٣

Then by the Lord of the heaven and earth, indeed, it is truth - just as [sure as] it is that you are speaking.

— Saheeh International

هَلْ

Has

hal

أَتَىٰكَ

reached you

atāka

حَدِيثُ

(the) narration

ḥadīthu

ضَيْفِ

(of the) guests

ḍayfi

إِبْرَٰهِيمَ

(of) Ibrahim

ib'rāhīma

ٱلْمُكْرَمِينَ

the honored

l-muk'ramīna

٢٤

Has there reached you the story of the honored guests of Abraham?1 -

— Saheeh International

إِذْ

When

idh

دَخَلُوا۟

they entered

dakhalū

عَلَيْهِ

upon him

ʿalayhi

فَقَالُوا۟

and said

faqālū

سَلَـٰمًۭا ۖ

Peace

salāman

قَالَ

He said

qāla

سَلَـٰمٌۭ

Peace

salāmun

قَوْمٌۭ

a people

qawmun

مُّنكَرُونَ

unknown

munkarūna

٢٥

When they entered upon him and said, "[We greet you with] peace." He answered, "[And upon you] peace; [you are] a people unknown."

— Saheeh International

فَرَاغَ

Then he went

farāgha

إِلَىٰٓ

to

ilā

أَهْلِهِۦ

his household

ahlihi

فَجَآءَ

and came

fajāa

بِعِجْلٍۢ

with a calf

biʿij'lin

سَمِينٍۢ

fat

samīnin

٢٦

Then he went to his family and came with a fat [roasted] calf.

— Saheeh International

فَقَرَّبَهُۥٓ

And he placed it near

faqarrabahu

إِلَيْهِمْ

[to] them

ilayhim

قَالَ

he said

qāla

أَلَا

Will not

alā

تَأْكُلُونَ

you eat

takulūna

٢٧

And placed it near them; he said, "Will you not eat?"

— Saheeh International

فَأَوْجَسَ

Then he felt

fa-awjasa

مِنْهُمْ

from them

min'hum

خِيفَةًۭ ۖ

a fear

khīfatan

قَالُوا۟

They said

qālū

لَا

(Do) not

تَخَفْ ۖ

fear

takhaf

وَبَشَّرُوهُ

and they gave him glad tidings

wabasharūhu

بِغُلَـٰمٍ

of a son

bighulāmin

عَلِيمٍۢ

learned

ʿalīmin

٢٨

And he felt from them apprehension.1 They said, "Fear not," and gave him good tidings of a learned boy.

— Saheeh International

فَأَقْبَلَتِ

Then came forward

fa-aqbalati

ٱمْرَأَتُهُۥ

his wife

im'ra-atuhu

فِى

with

صَرَّةٍۢ

a loud voice

ṣarratin

فَصَكَّتْ

and struck

faṣakkat

وَجْهَهَا

her face

wajhahā

وَقَالَتْ

and she said

waqālat

عَجُوزٌ

An old woman

ʿajūzun

عَقِيمٌۭ

barren

ʿaqīmun

٢٩

And his wife approached with a cry [of alarm] and struck her face and said, "[I am] a barren old woman!"

— Saheeh International

قَالُوا۟

They said

qālū

كَذَٰلِكِ

Thus

kadhāliki

قَالَ

said

qāla

رَبُّكِ ۖ

your Lord

rabbuki

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed, He

innahu

هُوَ

[He]

huwa

ٱلْحَكِيمُ

(is) the All-Wise

l-ḥakīmu

ٱلْعَلِيمُ

the All-Knower

l-ʿalīmu

٣٠

They said, "Thus has said your Lord; indeed, He is the Wise, the Knowing."

— Saheeh International

۞ قَالَ

He said

qāla

فَمَا

Then what

famā

خَطْبُكُمْ

(is) your mission

khaṭbukum

أَيُّهَا

O messengers

ayyuhā

ٱلْمُرْسَلُونَ

O messengers

l-mur'salūna

٣١

[Abraham] said, "Then what is your business [here], O messengers?"

— Saheeh International

قَالُوٓا۟

They said

qālū

إِنَّآ

Indeed, we

innā

أُرْسِلْنَآ

[we] have been sent

ur'sil'nā

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

قَوْمٍۢ

a people

qawmin

مُّجْرِمِينَ

criminal

muj'rimīna

٣٢

They said, "Indeed, we have been sent to a people of criminals1

— Saheeh International

لِنُرْسِلَ

That we may send down

linur'sila

عَلَيْهِمْ

upon them

ʿalayhim

حِجَارَةًۭ

stones

ḥijāratan

مِّن

of

min

طِينٍۢ

clay

ṭīnin

٣٣

To send down upon them stones of clay,

— Saheeh International

مُّسَوَّمَةً

Marked

musawwamatan

عِندَ

by your Lord

ʿinda

رَبِّكَ

by your Lord

rabbika

لِلْمُسْرِفِينَ

for the transgressors

lil'mus'rifīna

٣٤

Marked in the presence of your Lord for the transgressors."

— Saheeh International

فَأَخْرَجْنَا

Then We brought out

fa-akhrajnā

مَن

(those) who

man

كَانَ

were

kāna

فِيهَا

therein

fīhā

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

the believers

l-mu'minīna

٣٥

So We brought out whoever was in them [i.e., the cities] of the believers.

— Saheeh International

فَمَا

But not

famā

وَجَدْنَا

We found

wajadnā

فِيهَا

therein

fīhā

غَيْرَ

other than

ghayra

بَيْتٍۢ

a house

baytin

مِّنَ

of

mina

ٱلْمُسْلِمِينَ

the Muslims

l-mus'limīna

٣٦

And We found not within them other than a [single] house of Muslims.1

— Saheeh International

وَتَرَكْنَا

And We left

wataraknā

فِيهَآ

therein

fīhā

ءَايَةًۭ

a Sign

āyatan

لِّلَّذِينَ

for those who

lilladhīna

يَخَافُونَ

fear

yakhāfūna

ٱلْعَذَابَ

the punishment

l-ʿadhāba

ٱلْأَلِيمَ

the painful

l-alīma

٣٧

And We left therein a sign for those who fear the painful punishment.

— Saheeh International

وَفِى

And in

wafī

مُوسَىٰٓ

Musa

mūsā

إِذْ

when

idh

أَرْسَلْنَـٰهُ

We sent him

arsalnāhu

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

فِرْعَوْنَ

Firaun

fir'ʿawna

بِسُلْطَـٰنٍۢ

with an authority

bisul'ṭānin

مُّبِينٍۢ

clear

mubīnin

٣٨

And in Moses [was a sign], when We sent him to Pharaoh with clear authority.1

— Saheeh International

فَتَوَلَّىٰ

But he turned away

fatawallā

بِرُكْنِهِۦ

with his supporters

biruk'nihi

وَقَالَ

and said

waqāla

سَـٰحِرٌ

A magician

sāḥirun

أَوْ

or

aw

مَجْنُونٌۭ

a madman

majnūnun

٣٩

But he turned away with his supporters and said, "A magician or a madman."

— Saheeh International

فَأَخَذْنَـٰهُ

So We took him

fa-akhadhnāhu

وَجُنُودَهُۥ

and his hosts

wajunūdahu

فَنَبَذْنَـٰهُمْ

and threw them

fanabadhnāhum

فِى

into

ٱلْيَمِّ

the sea

l-yami

وَهُوَ

while he

wahuwa

مُلِيمٌۭ

(was) blameworthy

mulīmun

٤٠

So We took him and his soldiers and cast them into the sea, and he was blameworthy.

— Saheeh International

وَفِى

And in

wafī

عَادٍ

Aad

ʿādin

إِذْ

when

idh

أَرْسَلْنَا

We sent

arsalnā

عَلَيْهِمُ

against them

ʿalayhimu

ٱلرِّيحَ

the wind

l-rīḥa

ٱلْعَقِيمَ

the barren

l-ʿaqīma

٤١

And in ʿAad [was a sign], when We sent against them the barren wind.1

— Saheeh International

مَا

Not

تَذَرُ

it left

tadharu

مِن

any

min

شَىْءٍ

thing

shayin

أَتَتْ

it came

atat

عَلَيْهِ

upon it

ʿalayhi

إِلَّا

but

illā

جَعَلَتْهُ

it made it

jaʿalathu

كَٱلرَّمِيمِ

like disintegrated ruins

kal-ramīmi

٤٢

It left nothing of what it came upon but that it made it like disintegrated ruins.

— Saheeh International

وَفِى

And in

wafī

ثَمُودَ

Thamud

thamūda

إِذْ

when

idh

قِيلَ

was said

qīla

لَهُمْ

to them

lahum

تَمَتَّعُوا۟

Enjoy (yourselves)

tamattaʿū

حَتَّىٰ

for

ḥattā

حِينٍۢ

a time

ḥīnin

٤٣

And in Thamūd, when it was said to them, "Enjoy yourselves for a time."

— Saheeh International

فَعَتَوْا۟

But they rebelled

faʿataw

عَنْ

against

ʿan

أَمْرِ

(the) Command

amri

رَبِّهِمْ

(of) their Lord

rabbihim

فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ

so seized them

fa-akhadhathumu

ٱلصَّـٰعِقَةُ

the thunderbolt

l-ṣāʿiqatu

وَهُمْ

while they

wahum

يَنظُرُونَ

were looking

yanẓurūna

٤٤

But they were insolent toward the command of their Lord, so the thunderbolt seized them while they were looking on.

— Saheeh International

فَمَا

Then not

famā

ٱسْتَطَـٰعُوا۟

they were able to

is'taṭāʿū

مِن

[of]

min

قِيَامٍۢ

stand

qiyāmin

وَمَا

and not

wamā

كَانُوا۟

they could

kānū

مُنتَصِرِينَ

help themselves

muntaṣirīna

٤٥

And they were unable to arise, nor could they defend themselves.

— Saheeh International

وَقَوْمَ

And (the) people

waqawma

نُوحٍۢ

(of) Nuh

nūḥin

مِّن

before

min

قَبْلُ ۖ

before

qablu

إِنَّهُمْ

indeed, they

innahum

كَانُوا۟

were

kānū

قَوْمًۭا

a people

qawman

فَـٰسِقِينَ

defiantly disobedient

fāsiqīna

٤٦

And [We destroyed] the people of Noah before; indeed, they were a people defiantly disobedient.

— Saheeh International

وَٱلسَّمَآءَ

And the heaven

wal-samāa

بَنَيْنَـٰهَا

We constructed it

banaynāhā

بِأَيْي۟دٍۢ

with strength

bi-aydin

وَإِنَّا

and indeed, We

wa-innā

لَمُوسِعُونَ

(are) surely (its) Expanders

lamūsiʿūna

٤٧

And the heaven We constructed with strength,1 and indeed, We are [its] expander.

— Saheeh International

وَٱلْأَرْضَ

And the earth

wal-arḍa

فَرَشْنَـٰهَا

We have spread it

farashnāhā

فَنِعْمَ

how excellent

faniʿ'ma

ٱلْمَـٰهِدُونَ

(are) the Spreaders

l-māhidūna

٤٨

And the earth We have spread out, and excellent is the preparer.

— Saheeh International

وَمِن

And of

wamin

كُلِّ

every

kulli

شَىْءٍ

thing

shayin

خَلَقْنَا

We have created

khalaqnā

زَوْجَيْنِ

pairs

zawjayni

لَعَلَّكُمْ

so that you may

laʿallakum

تَذَكَّرُونَ

remember

tadhakkarūna

٤٩

And of all things We created two mates [i.e., counterparts]; perhaps you will remember.

— Saheeh International

فَفِرُّوٓا۟

So flee

fafirrū

إِلَى

to

ilā

ٱللَّهِ ۖ

Allah

l-lahi

إِنِّى

indeed, I am

innī

لَكُم

to you

lakum

مِّنْهُ

from Him

min'hu

نَذِيرٌۭ

a warner

nadhīrun

مُّبِينٌۭ

clear

mubīnun

٥٠

So flee to Allāh.1 Indeed, I am to you from Him a clear warner.

— Saheeh International

وَلَا

And (do) not

walā

تَجْعَلُوا۟

make

tajʿalū

مَعَ

with

maʿa

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

إِلَـٰهًا

god

ilāhan

ءَاخَرَ ۖ

another

ākhara

إِنِّى

Indeed, I am

innī

لَكُم

to you

lakum

مِّنْهُ

from Him

min'hu

نَذِيرٌۭ

a warner

nadhīrun

مُّبِينٌۭ

clear

mubīnun

٥١

And do not make [as equal] with Allāh another deity. Indeed, I am to you from Him a clear warner.

— Saheeh International

كَذَٰلِكَ

Likewise

kadhālika

مَآ

not

أَتَى

came

atā

ٱلَّذِينَ

(to) those

alladhīna

مِن

before them

min

قَبْلِهِم

before them

qablihim

مِّن

any

min

رَّسُولٍ

Messenger

rasūlin

إِلَّا

but

illā

قَالُوا۟

they said

qālū

سَاحِرٌ

A magician

sāḥirun

أَوْ

or

aw

مَجْنُونٌ

a madman

majnūnun

٥٢

Similarly, there came not to those before them any messenger except that they said, "A magician or a madman."

— Saheeh International

أَتَوَاصَوْا۟

Have they transmitted it to them

atawāṣaw

بِهِۦ ۚ

Have they transmitted it to them

bihi

بَلْ

Nay

bal

هُمْ

they

hum

قَوْمٌۭ

(are) a people

qawmun

طَاغُونَ

transgressing

ṭāghūna

٥٣

Did they suggest it to them?1 Rather, they [themselves] are a transgressing people.

— Saheeh International

فَتَوَلَّ

So turn away

fatawalla

عَنْهُمْ

from them

ʿanhum

فَمَآ

for not

famā

أَنتَ

you

anta

بِمَلُومٍۢ

(are) to be blamed

bimalūmin

٥٤

So leave them, [O Muḥammad], for you are not to be blamed.

— Saheeh International

وَذَكِّرْ

And remind

wadhakkir

فَإِنَّ

for indeed

fa-inna

ٱلذِّكْرَىٰ

the reminder

l-dhik'rā

تَنفَعُ

benefits

tanfaʿu

ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

the believers

l-mu'minīna

٥٥

And remind, for indeed, the reminder benefits the believers.

— Saheeh International

وَمَا

And not

wamā

خَلَقْتُ

I have created

khalaqtu

ٱلْجِنَّ

the jinn

l-jina

وَٱلْإِنسَ

and the mankind

wal-insa

إِلَّا

except

illā

لِيَعْبُدُونِ

that they worship Me

liyaʿbudūni

٥٦

And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.

— Saheeh International

مَآ

Not

أُرِيدُ

I want

urīdu

مِنْهُم

from them

min'hum

مِّن

any

min

رِّزْقٍۢ

provision

riz'qin

وَمَآ

and not

wamā

أُرِيدُ

I want

urīdu

أَن

that

an

يُطْعِمُونِ

they (should) feed Me

yuṭ'ʿimūni

٥٧

I do not want from them any provision, nor do I want them to feed Me.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

هُوَ

He

huwa

ٱلرَّزَّاقُ

(is) the All-Provider

l-razāqu

ذُو

Possessor

dhū

ٱلْقُوَّةِ

(of) Power

l-quwati

ٱلْمَتِينُ

the Strong

l-matīnu

٥٨

Indeed, it is Allāh who is the [continual] Provider,1 the firm possessor of strength.

— Saheeh International

فَإِنَّ

So indeed

fa-inna

لِلَّذِينَ

for those who

lilladhīna

ظَلَمُوا۟

do wrong

ẓalamū

ذَنُوبًۭا

(is) a portion

dhanūban

مِّثْلَ

like

mith'la

ذَنُوبِ

(the) portion

dhanūbi

أَصْحَـٰبِهِمْ

(of) their companions

aṣḥābihim

فَلَا

so let them not ask Me to hasten

falā

يَسْتَعْجِلُونِ

so let them not ask Me to hasten

yastaʿjilūni

٥٩

And indeed, for those who have wronged is a portion [of punishment] like the portion of their companions [i.e., predecessors], so let them not impatiently urge Me.

— Saheeh International

فَوَيْلٌۭ

Then woe

fawaylun

لِّلَّذِينَ

to those who

lilladhīna

كَفَرُوا۟

disbelieve

kafarū

مِن

from

min

يَوْمِهِمُ

their Day

yawmihimu

ٱلَّذِى

which

alladhī

يُوعَدُونَ

they are promised

yūʿadūna

٦٠

And woe to those who have disbelieved from their Day which they are promised.

— Saheeh International
