يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you yāayyuhā who alladhīna believe āmanū (Take) testimony shahādatu among you baynikum when idhā approaches ḥaḍara one of you aḥadakumu [the] death l-mawtu (at the) time (of making) ḥīna [the] a will l-waṣiyati two ith'nāni men dhawā just ʿadlin among you minkum or aw two others ākharāni from min other than you ghayrikum if in you antum (are) travel(ing) ḍarabtum in fī the earth l-arḍi then befalls you fa-aṣābatkum calamity muṣībatu (of) [the] death l-mawti Detain both of them taḥbisūnahumā from min after baʿdi the prayer l-ṣalati and let them both swear fayuq'simāni by Allah bil-lahi if ini you doubt ir'tabtum Not lā we will exchange nashtarī it for bihi a price thamanan even if walaw he is kāna (of) dhā a near relative qur'bā and not walā we will conceal naktumu testimony shahādata (of) Allah l-lahi Indeed, we innā then idhan (will) surely (be) of lamina the sinners l-āthimīna
O you who have believed, testimony [should be taken] among you when death approaches one of you at the time of bequest - [that of] two just men from among you or two others from outside if you are traveling through the land and the disaster of death should strike you. Detain them after the prayer and let them both swear by Allāh if you doubt [their testimony, saying], "We will not exchange it [i.e., our oath] for a price [i.e., worldly gain], even if he should be a near relative, and we will not withhold the testimony of [i.e., ordained by] Allāh. Indeed, we would then be of the sinful."
فَإِنْ Then if fa-in it is discovered ʿuthira (on) ʿalā that the two annahumā (were) guilty is'taḥaqqā (of) sin ith'man then (let) two others faākharāni stand yaqūmāni (in) their place maqāmahumā from mina those who alladhīna have a lawful right is'taḥaqqa over them ʿalayhimu the former two l-awlayāni and let them both swear fayuq'simāni by Allah bil-lahi Surely our testimony lashahādatunā (is) truer aḥaqqu than min testimony of the other two shahādatihimā and not wamā we have transgressed iʿ'tadaynā Indeed, we innā then idhan (will be) of lamina the wrongdoers l-ẓālimīna
But if it is found that those two were guilty of sin [i.e., perjury], let two others stand in their place [who are] foremost [in claim] from those who have a lawful right. And let them swear by Allāh, "Our testimony is truer than their testimony, and we have not transgressed. Indeed, we would then be of the wrongdoers."
ذَٰلِكَ That dhālika (is) closer adnā that an they will give yatū the testimony bil-shahādati in ʿalā its (true) form wajhihā or aw they would fear yakhāfū that an will be refuted turadda their oaths aymānun after baʿda their (others) oaths aymānihim And fear wa-ittaqū Allah l-laha and listen wa-is'maʿū and Allah wal-lahu (does) not lā guide yahdī the people l-qawma the defiantly disobedient l-fāsiqīna
That is more likely that they will give testimony according to its [true] objective, or [at least] they would fear that [other] oaths might be taken after their oaths. And fear Allāh and listen [i.e., obey Him]; and Allāh does not guide the defiantly disobedient people.
