محمد

ٱلَّذِينَ

Those who

alladhīna

كَفَرُوا۟

disbelieve

kafarū

وَصَدُّوا۟

and turn away

waṣaddū

عَن

from

ʿan

سَبِيلِ

(the) way of Allah

sabīli

ٱللَّهِ

(the) way of Allah

l-lahi

أَضَلَّ

He will cause to be lost

aḍalla

أَعْمَـٰلَهُمْ

their deeds

aʿmālahum

١

Those who disbelieve and avert [people] from the way of Allāh - He will waste their deeds.1

— Saheeh International

وَٱلَّذِينَ

And those who

wa-alladhīna

ءَامَنُوا۟

believe

āmanū

وَعَمِلُوا۟

and do

waʿamilū

ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ

righteous deeds

l-ṣāliḥāti

وَءَامَنُوا۟

and believe

waāmanū

بِمَا

in what

bimā

نُزِّلَ

is revealed

nuzzila

عَلَىٰ

to

ʿalā

مُحَمَّدٍۢ

Muhammad

muḥammadin

وَهُوَ

and it

wahuwa

ٱلْحَقُّ

(is) the truth

l-ḥaqu

مِن

from

min

رَّبِّهِمْ ۙ

their Lord

rabbihim

كَفَّرَ

He will remove

kaffara

عَنْهُمْ

from them

ʿanhum

سَيِّـَٔاتِهِمْ

their misdeeds

sayyiātihim

وَأَصْلَحَ

and improve

wa-aṣlaḥa

بَالَهُمْ

their condition

bālahum

٢

And those who believe and do righteous deeds and believe in what has been sent down upon Muḥammad - and it is the truth from their Lord - He will remove from them their misdeeds and amend their condition.

— Saheeh International

ذَٰلِكَ

That

dhālika

بِأَنَّ

(is) because

bi-anna

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

كَفَرُوا۟

disbelieve

kafarū

ٱتَّبَعُوا۟

follow

ittabaʿū

ٱلْبَـٰطِلَ

falsehood

l-bāṭila

وَأَنَّ

and that

wa-anna

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

ءَامَنُوا۟

believe

āmanū

ٱتَّبَعُوا۟

follow

ittabaʿū

ٱلْحَقَّ

(the) truth

l-ḥaqa

مِن

from

min

رَّبِّهِمْ ۚ

their Lord

rabbihim

كَذَٰلِكَ

Thus

kadhālika

يَضْرِبُ

Allah presents

yaḍribu

ٱللَّهُ

Allah presents

l-lahu

لِلنَّاسِ

to the people

lilnnāsi

أَمْثَـٰلَهُمْ

their similitudes

amthālahum

٣

That is because those who disbelieve follow falsehood, and those who believe follow the truth from their Lord. Thus does Allāh present to the people their comparisons.1

— Saheeh International

فَإِذَا

So when

fa-idhā

لَقِيتُمُ

you meet

laqītumu

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

كَفَرُوا۟

disbelieve

kafarū

فَضَرْبَ

then strike

faḍarba

ٱلرِّقَابِ

the necks

l-riqābi

حَتَّىٰٓ

until

ḥattā

إِذَآ

when

idhā

أَثْخَنتُمُوهُمْ

you have subdued them

athkhantumūhum

فَشُدُّوا۟

then bind firmly

fashuddū

ٱلْوَثَاقَ

the bond

l-wathāqa

فَإِمَّا

then either

fa-immā

مَنًّۢا

a favor

mannan

بَعْدُ

afterwards

baʿdu

وَإِمَّا

or

wa-immā

فِدَآءً

ransom

fidāan

حَتَّىٰ

until

ḥattā

تَضَعَ

lays down

taḍaʿa

ٱلْحَرْبُ

the war

l-ḥarbu

أَوْزَارَهَا ۚ

its burdens

awzārahā

ذَٰلِكَ

That

dhālika

وَلَوْ

And if

walaw

يَشَآءُ

Allah had willed

yashāu

ٱللَّهُ

Allah had willed

l-lahu

لَٱنتَصَرَ

surely, He could have taken retribution

la-intaṣara

مِنْهُمْ

from them

min'hum

وَلَـٰكِن

but

walākin

لِّيَبْلُوَا۟

to test

liyabluwā

بَعْضَكُم

some of you

baʿḍakum

بِبَعْضٍۢ ۗ

with others

bibaʿḍin

وَٱلَّذِينَ

And those who

wa-alladhīna

قُتِلُوا۟

are killed

qutilū

فِى

in

سَبِيلِ

(the) way of Allah

sabīli

ٱللَّهِ

(the) way of Allah

l-lahi

فَلَن

then never

falan

يُضِلَّ

He will cause to be lost

yuḍilla

أَعْمَـٰلَهُمْ

their deeds

aʿmālahum

٤

So when you meet those who disbelieve [in battle], strike [their] necks until, when you have inflicted slaughter upon them, then secure [their] bonds,1 and either [confer] favor2 afterwards or ransom [them] until the war lays down its burdens.3 That [is the command]. And if Allāh had willed, He could have taken vengeance upon them [Himself], but [He ordered armed struggle] to test some of you by means of others. And those who are killed in the cause of Allāh - never will He waste their deeds.

— Saheeh International

سَيَهْدِيهِمْ

He will guide them

sayahdīhim

وَيُصْلِحُ

and improve

wayuṣ'liḥu

بَالَهُمْ

their condition

bālahum

٥

He will guide them and amend their condition

— Saheeh International

وَيُدْخِلُهُمُ

And admit them

wayud'khiluhumu

ٱلْجَنَّةَ

(to) Paradise

l-janata

عَرَّفَهَا

He has made it known

ʿarrafahā

لَهُمْ

to them

lahum

٦

And admit them to Paradise, which He has made known to them.

— Saheeh International

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا

O you who believe

yāayyuhā

ٱلَّذِينَ

O you who believe

alladhīna

ءَامَنُوٓا۟

O you who believe

āmanū

إِن

If

in

تَنصُرُوا۟

you help

tanṣurū

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

يَنصُرْكُمْ

He will help you

yanṣur'kum

وَيُثَبِّتْ

and make firm

wayuthabbit

أَقْدَامَكُمْ

your feet

aqdāmakum

٧

O you who have believed, if you support Allāh, He will support you and plant firmly your feet.

— Saheeh International

وَٱلَّذِينَ

But those who

wa-alladhīna

كَفَرُوا۟

disbelieve

kafarū

فَتَعْسًۭا

destruction (is)

fataʿsan

لَّهُمْ

for them

lahum

وَأَضَلَّ

and He will cause to be lost

wa-aḍalla

أَعْمَـٰلَهُمْ

their deeds

aʿmālahum

٨

But those who disbelieve - for them is misery, and He will waste their deeds.

— Saheeh International

ذَٰلِكَ

That

dhālika

بِأَنَّهُمْ

(is) because they

bi-annahum

كَرِهُوا۟

hate

karihū

مَآ

what

أَنزَلَ

Allah has revealed

anzala

ٱللَّهُ

Allah has revealed

l-lahu

فَأَحْبَطَ

so He has made worthless

fa-aḥbaṭa

أَعْمَـٰلَهُمْ

their deeds

aʿmālahum

٩

That is because they disliked what Allāh revealed, so He rendered worthless their deeds.

— Saheeh International

۞ أَفَلَمْ

Do not

afalam

يَسِيرُوا۟

they travel

yasīrū

فِى

in

ٱلْأَرْضِ

the earth

l-arḍi

فَيَنظُرُوا۟

and see

fayanẓurū

كَيْفَ

how

kayfa

كَانَ

was

kāna

عَـٰقِبَةُ

(the) end

ʿāqibatu

ٱلَّذِينَ

(of) those

alladhīna

مِن

before them

min

قَبْلِهِمْ ۚ

before them

qablihim

دَمَّرَ

Allah destroyed

dammara

ٱللَّهُ

Allah destroyed

l-lahu

عَلَيْهِمْ ۖ

[over] them

ʿalayhim

وَلِلْكَـٰفِرِينَ

and for the disbelievers

walil'kāfirīna

أَمْثَـٰلُهَا

its likeness

amthāluhā

١٠

Have they not traveled through the land and seen how was the end of those before them? Allāh destroyed [everything] over them,1 and for the disbelievers is something comparable.

— Saheeh International

ذَٰلِكَ

That

dhālika

بِأَنَّ

(is) because

bi-anna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

مَوْلَى

(is the) Protector

mawlā

ٱلَّذِينَ

(of) those who

alladhīna

ءَامَنُوا۟

believe

āmanū

وَأَنَّ

and that

wa-anna

ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ

the disbelievers

l-kāfirīna

لَا

(there is) no

مَوْلَىٰ

protector

mawlā

لَهُمْ

for them

lahum

١١

That is because Allāh is the protector of those who have believed and because the disbelievers have no protector.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

يُدْخِلُ

will admit

yud'khilu

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

ءَامَنُوا۟

believe

āmanū

وَعَمِلُوا۟

and do

waʿamilū

ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ

righteous deeds

l-ṣāliḥāti

جَنَّـٰتٍۢ

(to) Gardens

jannātin

تَجْرِى

flow

tajrī

مِن

from

min

تَحْتِهَا

underneath it

taḥtihā

ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ ۖ

the rivers

l-anhāru

وَٱلَّذِينَ

but those who

wa-alladhīna

كَفَرُوا۟

disbelieve

kafarū

يَتَمَتَّعُونَ

they enjoy

yatamattaʿūna

وَيَأْكُلُونَ

and eat

wayakulūna

كَمَا

as

kamā

تَأْكُلُ

eat

takulu

ٱلْأَنْعَـٰمُ

the cattle

l-anʿāmu

وَٱلنَّارُ

and the Fire

wal-nāru

مَثْوًۭى

(will be) an abode

mathwan

لَّهُمْ

for them

lahum

١٢

Indeed, Allāh will admit those who have believed and done righteous deeds to gardens beneath which rivers flow, but those who disbelieve enjoy themselves and eat as grazing livestock eat, and the Fire will be a residence for them.

— Saheeh International

وَكَأَيِّن

And how many

waka-ayyin

مِّن

of

min

قَرْيَةٍ

a town

qaryatin

هِىَ

which

hiya

أَشَدُّ

(was) stronger

ashaddu

قُوَّةًۭ

(in) strength

quwwatan

مِّن

than

min

قَرْيَتِكَ

your town

qaryatika

ٱلَّتِىٓ

which

allatī

أَخْرَجَتْكَ

has driven you out

akhrajatka

أَهْلَكْنَـٰهُمْ

We destroyed them

ahlaknāhum

فَلَا

so no

falā

نَاصِرَ

helper

nāṣira

لَهُمْ

for them

lahum

١٣

And how many a city was stronger than your city [i.e., Makkah] which drove you out? We destroyed them; and there was no helper for them.

— Saheeh International

أَفَمَن

Then is (he) who

afaman

كَانَ

is

kāna

عَلَىٰ

on

ʿalā

بَيِّنَةٍۢ

a clear proof

bayyinatin

مِّن

from

min

رَّبِّهِۦ

his Lord

rabbihi

كَمَن

like (he) who

kaman

زُيِّنَ

is made attractive

zuyyina

لَهُۥ

to him

lahu

سُوٓءُ

(the) evil

sūu

عَمَلِهِۦ

(of) his deeds

ʿamalihi

وَٱتَّبَعُوٓا۟

while they follow

wa-ittabaʿū

أَهْوَآءَهُم

their desires

ahwāahum

١٤

So is he who is on clear evidence from his Lord like him to whom the evil of his work has been made attractive and they follow their [own] desires?

— Saheeh International

مَّثَلُ

A parable

mathalu

ٱلْجَنَّةِ

(of) Paradise

l-janati

ٱلَّتِى

which

allatī

وُعِدَ

is promised

wuʿida

ٱلْمُتَّقُونَ ۖ

(to) the righteous

l-mutaqūna

فِيهَآ

Therein

fīhā

أَنْهَـٰرٌۭ

(are) rivers

anhārun

مِّن

of

min

مَّآءٍ

water

māin

غَيْرِ

not

ghayri

ءَاسِنٍۢ

polluted

āsinin

وَأَنْهَـٰرٌۭ

and rivers

wa-anhārun

مِّن

of

min

لَّبَنٍۢ

milk

labanin

لَّمْ

not

lam

يَتَغَيَّرْ

changes

yataghayyar

طَعْمُهُۥ

its taste

ṭaʿmuhu

وَأَنْهَـٰرٌۭ

and rivers

wa-anhārun

مِّنْ

of

min

خَمْرٍۢ

wine

khamrin

لَّذَّةٍۢ

delicious

ladhatin

لِّلشَّـٰرِبِينَ

for (the) drinkers

lilshāribīna

وَأَنْهَـٰرٌۭ

and rivers

wa-anhārun

مِّنْ

of

min

عَسَلٍۢ

honey

ʿasalin

مُّصَفًّۭى ۖ

purified

muṣaffan

وَلَهُمْ

and for them

walahum

فِيهَا

therein

fīhā

مِن

of

min

كُلِّ

all

kulli

ٱلثَّمَرَٰتِ

fruits

l-thamarāti

وَمَغْفِرَةٌۭ

and forgiveness

wamaghfiratun

مِّن

from

min

رَّبِّهِمْ ۖ

their Lord

rabbihim

كَمَنْ

like he who

kaman

هُوَ

like he who

huwa

خَـٰلِدٌۭ

(will) abide forever

khālidun

فِى

in

ٱلنَّارِ

the Fire

l-nāri

وَسُقُوا۟

and they will be given to drink

wasuqū

مَآءً

water

māan

حَمِيمًۭا

boiling

ḥamīman

فَقَطَّعَ

so it cuts into pieces

faqaṭṭaʿa

أَمْعَآءَهُمْ

their intestines

amʿāahum

١٥

Is the description of Paradise, which the righteous are promised, wherein are rivers of water unaltered,1 rivers of milk the taste of which never changes, rivers of wine delicious to those who drink, and rivers of purified honey, in which they will have from all [kinds of] fruits and forgiveness from their Lord... [Are its inhabitants] like those who abide eternally in the Fire and are given to drink scalding water that will sever their intestines?

— Saheeh International

وَمِنْهُم

And among them

wamin'hum

مَّن

(are some) who

man

يَسْتَمِعُ

listen

yastamiʿu

إِلَيْكَ

to you

ilayka

حَتَّىٰٓ

until

ḥattā

إِذَا

when

idhā

خَرَجُوا۟

they depart

kharajū

مِنْ

from

min

عِندِكَ

you

ʿindika

قَالُوا۟

they say

qālū

لِلَّذِينَ

to those who

lilladhīna

أُوتُوا۟

were given

ūtū

ٱلْعِلْمَ

the knowledge

l-ʿil'ma

مَاذَا

What

mādhā

قَالَ

(has) he said

qāla

ءَانِفًا ۚ

just now

ānifan

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

Those

ulāika

ٱلَّذِينَ

(are) the ones

alladhīna

طَبَعَ

Allah has set a seal

ṭabaʿa

ٱللَّهُ

Allah has set a seal

l-lahu

عَلَىٰ

upon

ʿalā

قُلُوبِهِمْ

their hearts

qulūbihim

وَٱتَّبَعُوٓا۟

and they follow

wa-ittabaʿū

أَهْوَآءَهُمْ

their desires

ahwāahum

١٦

And among them, [O Muḥammad], are those who listen to you, until when they depart from you, they say to those who were given knowledge,1 "What has he said just now?" Those are the ones of whom Allāh has sealed over their hearts and who have followed their [own] desires.

— Saheeh International

وَٱلَّذِينَ

And those who

wa-alladhīna

ٱهْتَدَوْا۟

accept guidance

ih'tadaw

زَادَهُمْ

He increases them

zādahum

هُدًۭى

(in) guidance

hudan

وَءَاتَىٰهُمْ

and gives them

waātāhum

تَقْوَىٰهُمْ

their righteousness

taqwāhum

١٧

And those who are guided - He increases them in guidance and gives them their righteousness.1

— Saheeh International

فَهَلْ

Then do

fahal

يَنظُرُونَ

they wait

yanẓurūna

إِلَّا

but

illā

ٱلسَّاعَةَ

(for) the Hour

l-sāʿata

أَن

that

an

تَأْتِيَهُم

it should come to them

tatiyahum

بَغْتَةًۭ ۖ

suddenly

baghtatan

فَقَدْ

But indeed

faqad

جَآءَ

have come

jāa

أَشْرَاطُهَا ۚ

its indications

ashrāṭuhā

فَأَنَّىٰ

Then how

fa-annā

لَهُمْ

to them

lahum

إِذَا

when

idhā

جَآءَتْهُمْ

has come to them

jāathum

ذِكْرَىٰهُمْ

their reminder

dhik'rāhum

١٨

Then do they await except that the Hour should come upon them unexpectedly? But already there have come [some of] its indications. Then how [i.e., what good] to them, when it has come, will be their remembrance?

— Saheeh International

فَٱعْلَمْ

So know

fa-iʿ'lam

أَنَّهُۥ

that [He]

annahu

لَآ

(there is) no

إِلَـٰهَ

god

ilāha

إِلَّا

but

illā

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

وَٱسْتَغْفِرْ

and ask forgiveness

wa-is'taghfir

لِذَنۢبِكَ

for your sin

lidhanbika

وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

and for the believing men

walil'mu'minīna

وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتِ ۗ

and the believing women

wal-mu'mināti

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

يَعْلَمُ

knows

yaʿlamu

مُتَقَلَّبَكُمْ

your movement

mutaqallabakum

وَمَثْوَىٰكُمْ

and your resting places

wamathwākum

١٩

So know, [O Muḥammad], that there is no deity except Allāh and ask forgiveness for your sin1 and for the believing men and believing women. And Allāh knows of your movement and your resting place.

— Saheeh International

وَيَقُولُ

And say

wayaqūlu

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

ءَامَنُوا۟

believe

āmanū

لَوْلَا

Why not

lawlā

نُزِّلَتْ

has been revealed

nuzzilat

سُورَةٌۭ ۖ

a Surah

sūratun

فَإِذَآ

But when

fa-idhā

أُنزِلَتْ

is revealed

unzilat

سُورَةٌۭ

a Surah

sūratun

مُّحْكَمَةٌۭ

precise

muḥ'kamatun

وَذُكِرَ

and is mentioned

wadhukira

فِيهَا

in it

fīhā

ٱلْقِتَالُ ۙ

the fighting

l-qitālu

رَأَيْتَ

you see

ra-ayta

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

فِى

in

قُلُوبِهِم

their hearts

qulūbihim

مَّرَضٌۭ

(is) a disease

maraḍun

يَنظُرُونَ

looking

yanẓurūna

إِلَيْكَ

at you

ilayka

نَظَرَ

a look

naẓara

ٱلْمَغْشِىِّ

(of) one fainting

l-maghshiyi

عَلَيْهِ

(of) one fainting

ʿalayhi

مِنَ

from

mina

ٱلْمَوْتِ ۖ

the death

l-mawti

فَأَوْلَىٰ

But more appropriate

fa-awlā

لَهُمْ

for them

lahum

٢٠

Those who believe say, "Why has a sūrah1 not been sent down?" But when a precise sūrah is revealed and battle is mentioned therein, you see those in whose hearts is disease [i.e., hypocrisy] looking at you with a look of one overcome by death. And more appropriate for them2 [would have been]

— Saheeh International

طَاعَةٌۭ

(Is) obedience

ṭāʿatun

وَقَوْلٌۭ

and a word

waqawlun

مَّعْرُوفٌۭ ۚ

kind

maʿrūfun

فَإِذَا

And when

fa-idhā

عَزَمَ

(is) determined

ʿazama

ٱلْأَمْرُ

the matter

l-amru

فَلَوْ

then if

falaw

صَدَقُوا۟

they had been true

ṣadaqū

ٱللَّهَ

(to) Allah

l-laha

لَكَانَ

surely, it would have been

lakāna

خَيْرًۭا

better

khayran

لَّهُمْ

for them

lahum

٢١

Obedience and good words. And when the matter [of fighting] was determined, if they had been true to Allāh, it would have been better for them.

— Saheeh International

فَهَلْ

Then would

fahal

عَسَيْتُمْ

you perhaps

ʿasaytum

إِن

if

in

تَوَلَّيْتُمْ

you are given authority

tawallaytum

أَن

that

an

تُفْسِدُوا۟

you cause corruption

tuf'sidū

فِى

in

ٱلْأَرْضِ

the earth

l-arḍi

وَتُقَطِّعُوٓا۟

and cut off

watuqaṭṭiʿū

أَرْحَامَكُمْ

your ties of kinship

arḥāmakum

٢٢

So would you perhaps, if you turned away,1 cause corruption on earth and sever your [ties of] relationship?

— Saheeh International

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

Those

ulāika

ٱلَّذِينَ

(are) the ones

alladhīna

لَعَنَهُمُ

Allah has cursed them

laʿanahumu

ٱللَّهُ

Allah has cursed them

l-lahu

فَأَصَمَّهُمْ

so He made them deaf

fa-aṣammahum

وَأَعْمَىٰٓ

and blinded

wa-aʿmā

أَبْصَـٰرَهُمْ

their vision

abṣārahum

٢٣

Those [who do so] are the ones that Allāh has cursed, so He deafened them and blinded their vision.

— Saheeh International

أَفَلَا

Then do not

afalā

يَتَدَبَّرُونَ

they ponder

yatadabbarūna

ٱلْقُرْءَانَ

(over) the Quran

l-qur'āna

أَمْ

or

am

عَلَىٰ

upon

ʿalā

قُلُوبٍ

(their) hearts

qulūbin

أَقْفَالُهَآ

(are) locks

aqfāluhā

٢٤

Then do they not reflect upon the Qur’ān, or are there locks upon [their] hearts?

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

ٱرْتَدُّوا۟

return

ir'taddū

عَلَىٰٓ

on

ʿalā

أَدْبَـٰرِهِم

their backs

adbārihim

مِّنۢ

after

min

بَعْدِ

after

baʿdi

مَا

what

تَبَيَّنَ

(has) become clear

tabayyana

لَهُمُ

to them

lahumu

ٱلْهُدَى ۙ

(of) the guidance

l-hudā

ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُ

Shaitaan

l-shayṭānu

سَوَّلَ

enticed

sawwala

لَهُمْ

[for] them

lahum

وَأَمْلَىٰ

and prolonged hope

wa-amlā

لَهُمْ

for them

lahum

٢٥

Indeed, those who reverted back [to disbelief] after guidance had become clear to them - Satan enticed them and prolonged hope for them.

— Saheeh International

ذَٰلِكَ

That

dhālika

بِأَنَّهُمْ

(is) because they

bi-annahum

قَالُوا۟

[they] said

qālū

لِلَّذِينَ

to those who

lilladhīna

كَرِهُوا۟

hate

karihū

مَا

what

نَزَّلَ

Allah has revealed

nazzala

ٱللَّهُ

Allah has revealed

l-lahu

سَنُطِيعُكُمْ

We will obey you

sanuṭīʿukum

فِى

in

بَعْضِ

part

baʿḍi

ٱلْأَمْرِ ۖ

(of) the matter

l-amri

وَٱللَّهُ

But Allah

wal-lahu

يَعْلَمُ

knows

yaʿlamu

إِسْرَارَهُمْ

their secrets

is'rārahum

٢٦

That is because they said to those who disliked what Allāh sent down,1 "We will obey you in part of the matter." And Allāh knows what they conceal.

— Saheeh International

فَكَيْفَ

Then how

fakayfa

إِذَا

when

idhā

تَوَفَّتْهُمُ

take them in death

tawaffathumu

ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ

the Angels

l-malāikatu

يَضْرِبُونَ

striking

yaḍribūna

وُجُوهَهُمْ

their faces

wujūhahum

وَأَدْبَـٰرَهُمْ

and their backs

wa-adbārahum

٢٧

Then how [will it be] when the angels take them in death, striking their faces and their backs?

— Saheeh International

ذَٰلِكَ

That

dhālika

بِأَنَّهُمُ

(is) because they

bi-annahumu

ٱتَّبَعُوا۟

followed

ittabaʿū

مَآ

what

أَسْخَطَ

angered

askhaṭa

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

وَكَرِهُوا۟

and hated

wakarihū

رِضْوَٰنَهُۥ

His pleasure

riḍ'wānahu

فَأَحْبَطَ

so He made worthless

fa-aḥbaṭa

أَعْمَـٰلَهُمْ

their deeds

aʿmālahum

٢٨

That is because they followed what angered Allāh and disliked [what earns] His pleasure, so He rendered worthless their deeds.

— Saheeh International

أَمْ

Or do

am

حَسِبَ

think

ḥasiba

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

فِى

in

قُلُوبِهِم

their hearts

qulūbihim

مَّرَضٌ

(is) a disease

maraḍun

أَن

that

an

لَّن

never

lan

يُخْرِجَ

will Allah bring forth

yukh'rija

ٱللَّهُ

will Allah bring forth

l-lahu

أَضْغَـٰنَهُمْ

their hatred

aḍghānahum

٢٩

Or do those in whose hearts is disease think that Allāh would never expose their [feelings of] hatred?

— Saheeh International

وَلَوْ

And if

walaw

نَشَآءُ

We willed

nashāu

لَأَرَيْنَـٰكَهُمْ

surely, We could show them to you

la-araynākahum

فَلَعَرَفْتَهُم

and you would know them

falaʿaraftahum

بِسِيمَـٰهُمْ ۚ

by their marks

bisīmāhum

وَلَتَعْرِفَنَّهُمْ

but surely, you will know them

walataʿrifannahum

فِى

by

لَحْنِ

(the) tone

laḥni

ٱلْقَوْلِ ۚ

(of their) speech

l-qawli

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

يَعْلَمُ

knows

yaʿlamu

أَعْمَـٰلَكُمْ

your deeds

aʿmālakum

٣٠

And if We willed, We could show them to you, and you would know them by their mark; but you will surely know them by the tone of [their] speech. And Allāh knows your deeds.

— Saheeh International

وَلَنَبْلُوَنَّكُمْ

And surely We will test you

walanabluwannakum

حَتَّىٰ

until

ḥattā

نَعْلَمَ

We make evident

naʿlama

ٱلْمُجَـٰهِدِينَ

those who strive

l-mujāhidīna

مِنكُمْ

among you

minkum

وَٱلصَّـٰبِرِينَ

and the patient ones

wal-ṣābirīna

وَنَبْلُوَا۟

and We will test

wanabluwā

أَخْبَارَكُمْ

your affairs

akhbārakum

٣١

And We will surely test you until We make evident those who strive among you [for the cause of Allāh] and the patient, and We will test your affairs.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

كَفَرُوا۟

disbelieve

kafarū

وَصَدُّوا۟

and turn away

waṣaddū

عَن

from

ʿan

سَبِيلِ

(the) way of Allah

sabīli

ٱللَّهِ

(the) way of Allah

l-lahi

وَشَآقُّوا۟

and oppose

washāqqū

ٱلرَّسُولَ

the Messenger

l-rasūla

مِنۢ

after

min

بَعْدِ

after

baʿdi

مَا

[what]

تَبَيَّنَ

(has been) made clear

tabayyana

لَهُمُ

to them

lahumu

ٱلْهُدَىٰ

the guidance

l-hudā

لَن

never

lan

يَضُرُّوا۟

will they harm

yaḍurrū

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

شَيْـًۭٔا

(in) anything

shayan

وَسَيُحْبِطُ

and He will make worthless

wasayuḥ'biṭu

أَعْمَـٰلَهُمْ

their deeds

aʿmālahum

٣٢

Indeed, those who disbelieved and averted [people] from the path of Allāh and opposed the Messenger after guidance had become clear to them - never will they harm Allāh at all, and He will render worthless their deeds.

— Saheeh International

۞ يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا

O you who believe

yāayyuhā

ٱلَّذِينَ

O you who believe

alladhīna

ءَامَنُوٓا۟

O you who believe

āmanū

أَطِيعُوا۟

Obey

aṭīʿū

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

وَأَطِيعُوا۟

and obey

wa-aṭīʿū

ٱلرَّسُولَ

the Messenger

l-rasūla

وَلَا

and (do) not

walā

تُبْطِلُوٓا۟

make vain

tub'ṭilū

أَعْمَـٰلَكُمْ

your deeds

aʿmālakum

٣٣

O you who have believed, obey Allāh and obey the Messenger and do not invalidate your deeds.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

كَفَرُوا۟

disbelieve

kafarū

وَصَدُّوا۟

and turn away

waṣaddū

عَن

from

ʿan

سَبِيلِ

(the) way

sabīli

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

ثُمَّ

then

thumma

مَاتُوا۟

died

mātū

وَهُمْ

while they

wahum

كُفَّارٌۭ

(were) disbelievers

kuffārun

فَلَن

never

falan

يَغْفِرَ

will Allah forgive

yaghfira

ٱللَّهُ

will Allah forgive

l-lahu

لَهُمْ

them

lahum

٣٤

Indeed, those who disbelieved and averted [people] from the path of Allāh and then died while they were disbelievers - never will Allāh forgive them.

— Saheeh International

فَلَا

So (do) not

falā

تَهِنُوا۟

weaken

tahinū

وَتَدْعُوٓا۟

and call

watadʿū

إِلَى

for

ilā

ٱلسَّلْمِ

peace

l-salmi

وَأَنتُمُ

while you

wa-antumu

ٱلْأَعْلَوْنَ

(are) superior

l-aʿlawna

وَٱللَّهُ

and Allah

wal-lahu

مَعَكُمْ

(is) with you

maʿakum

وَلَن

and never

walan

يَتِرَكُمْ

will deprive you

yatirakum

أَعْمَـٰلَكُمْ

(of) your deeds

aʿmālakum

٣٥

So do not weaken and call for peace while you are superior; and Allāh is with you and will never deprive you of [the reward of] your deeds.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّمَا

Only

innamā

ٱلْحَيَوٰةُ

the life

l-ḥayatu

ٱلدُّنْيَا

(of) the world

l-dun'yā

لَعِبٌۭ

(is) play

laʿibun

وَلَهْوٌۭ ۚ

and amusement

walahwun

وَإِن

And if

wa-in

تُؤْمِنُوا۟

you believe

tu'minū

وَتَتَّقُوا۟

and fear (Allah)

watattaqū

يُؤْتِكُمْ

He will give you

yu'tikum

أُجُورَكُمْ

your rewards

ujūrakum

وَلَا

and not

walā

يَسْـَٔلْكُمْ

will ask you

yasalkum

أَمْوَٰلَكُمْ

(for) your wealth

amwālakum

٣٦

[This] worldly life is only amusement and diversion. And if you believe and fear Allāh, He will give you your rewards and not ask you for your properties.

— Saheeh International

إِن

If

in

يَسْـَٔلْكُمُوهَا

He were to ask you for it

yasalkumūhā

فَيُحْفِكُمْ

and press you

fayuḥ'fikum

تَبْخَلُوا۟

you will withhold

tabkhalū

وَيُخْرِجْ

and He will bring forth

wayukh'rij

أَضْغَـٰنَكُمْ

your hatred

aḍghānakum

٣٧

If He should ask you for them and press you, you would withhold, and He would expose your hatred [i.e., unwillingness].

— Saheeh International

هَـٰٓأَنتُمْ

Here you are

hāantum

هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ

these

hāulāi

تُدْعَوْنَ

called

tud'ʿawna

لِتُنفِقُوا۟

to spend

litunfiqū

فِى

in

سَبِيلِ

(the) way

sabīli

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

فَمِنكُم

but among you

faminkum

مَّن

(are some) who

man

يَبْخَلُ ۖ

withhold

yabkhalu

وَمَن

and whoever

waman

يَبْخَلْ

withholds

yabkhal

فَإِنَّمَا

then only

fa-innamā

يَبْخَلُ

he withholds

yabkhalu

عَن

from

ʿan

نَّفْسِهِۦ ۚ

himself

nafsihi

وَٱللَّهُ

But Allah

wal-lahu

ٱلْغَنِىُّ

(is) Free of need

l-ghaniyu

وَأَنتُمُ

while you

wa-antumu

ٱلْفُقَرَآءُ ۚ

(are) the needy

l-fuqarāu

وَإِن

And if

wa-in

تَتَوَلَّوْا۟

you turn away

tatawallaw

يَسْتَبْدِلْ

He will replace you

yastabdil

قَوْمًا

(with) a people

qawman

غَيْرَكُمْ

other than you

ghayrakum

ثُمَّ

then

thumma

لَا

not

يَكُونُوٓا۟

they will be

yakūnū

أَمْثَـٰلَكُم

(the) likes of you

amthālakum

٣٨

Here you are - those invited to spend in the cause of Allāh - but among you are those who withhold [out of greed]. And whoever withholds only withholds [benefit] from himself; and Allāh is the Free of need, while you are the needy. And if you turn away [i.e., refuse], He will replace you with another people; then they will not be the likes of you.

— Saheeh International
