﷽
محمد
ٱلَّذِينَ Those who alladhīna disbelieve kafarū and turn away waṣaddū from ʿan (the) way of Allah sabīli (the) way of Allah l-lahi He will cause to be lost aḍalla their deeds aʿmālahum
Those who disbelieve and avert [people] from the way of Allāh - He will waste their deeds.1
وَٱلَّذِينَ And those who wa-alladhīna believe āmanū and do waʿamilū righteous deeds l-ṣāliḥāti and believe waāmanū in what bimā is revealed nuzzila to ʿalā Muhammad muḥammadin and it wahuwa (is) the truth l-ḥaqu from min their Lord rabbihim He will remove kaffara from them ʿanhum their misdeeds sayyiātihim and improve wa-aṣlaḥa their condition bālahum
And those who believe and do righteous deeds and believe in what has been sent down upon Muḥammad - and it is the truth from their Lord - He will remove from them their misdeeds and amend their condition.
ذَٰلِكَ That dhālika (is) because bi-anna those who alladhīna disbelieve kafarū follow ittabaʿū falsehood l-bāṭila and that wa-anna those who alladhīna believe āmanū follow ittabaʿū (the) truth l-ḥaqa from min their Lord rabbihim Thus kadhālika Allah presents yaḍribu Allah presents l-lahu to the people lilnnāsi their similitudes amthālahum
That is because those who disbelieve follow falsehood, and those who believe follow the truth from their Lord. Thus does Allāh present to the people their comparisons.1
فَإِذَا So when fa-idhā you meet laqītumu those who alladhīna disbelieve kafarū then strike faḍarba the necks l-riqābi until ḥattā when idhā you have subdued them athkhantumūhum then bind firmly fashuddū the bond l-wathāqa then either fa-immā a favor mannan afterwards baʿdu or wa-immā ransom fidāan until ḥattā lays down taḍaʿa the war l-ḥarbu its burdens awzārahā That dhālika And if walaw Allah had willed yashāu Allah had willed l-lahu surely, He could have taken retribution la-intaṣara from them min'hum but walākin to test liyabluwā some of you baʿḍakum with others bibaʿḍin And those who wa-alladhīna are killed qutilū in fī (the) way of Allah sabīli (the) way of Allah l-lahi then never falan He will cause to be lost yuḍilla their deeds aʿmālahum
So when you meet those who disbelieve [in battle], strike [their] necks until, when you have inflicted slaughter upon them, then secure [their] bonds,1 and either [confer] favor2 afterwards or ransom [them] until the war lays down its burdens.3 That [is the command]. And if Allāh had willed, He could have taken vengeance upon them [Himself], but [He ordered armed struggle] to test some of you by means of others. And those who are killed in the cause of Allāh - never will He waste their deeds.
سَيَهْدِيهِمْ He will guide them sayahdīhim and improve wayuṣ'liḥu their condition bālahum
He will guide them and amend their condition
وَيُدْخِلُهُمُ And admit them wayud'khiluhumu (to) Paradise l-janata He has made it known ʿarrafahā to them lahum
And admit them to Paradise, which He has made known to them.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you who believe yāayyuhā O you who believe alladhīna O you who believe āmanū If in you help tanṣurū Allah l-laha He will help you yanṣur'kum and make firm wayuthabbit your feet aqdāmakum
O you who have believed, if you support Allāh, He will support you and plant firmly your feet.
وَٱلَّذِينَ But those who wa-alladhīna disbelieve kafarū destruction (is) fataʿsan for them lahum and He will cause to be lost wa-aḍalla their deeds aʿmālahum
But those who disbelieve - for them is misery, and He will waste their deeds.
ذَٰلِكَ That dhālika (is) because they bi-annahum hate karihū what mā Allah has revealed anzala Allah has revealed l-lahu so He has made worthless fa-aḥbaṭa their deeds aʿmālahum
That is because they disliked what Allāh revealed, so He rendered worthless their deeds.
۞ أَفَلَمْ Do not afalam they travel yasīrū in fī the earth l-arḍi and see fayanẓurū how kayfa was kāna (the) end ʿāqibatu (of) those alladhīna before them min before them qablihim Allah destroyed dammara Allah destroyed l-lahu [over] them ʿalayhim and for the disbelievers walil'kāfirīna its likeness amthāluhā
Have they not traveled through the land and seen how was the end of those before them? Allāh destroyed [everything] over them,1 and for the disbelievers is something comparable.
ذَٰلِكَ That dhālika (is) because bi-anna Allah l-laha (is the) Protector mawlā (of) those who alladhīna believe āmanū and that wa-anna the disbelievers l-kāfirīna (there is) no lā protector mawlā for them lahum
That is because Allāh is the protector of those who have believed and because the disbelievers have no protector.
إِنَّ Indeed inna Allah l-laha will admit yud'khilu those who alladhīna believe āmanū and do waʿamilū righteous deeds l-ṣāliḥāti (to) Gardens jannātin flow tajrī from min underneath it taḥtihā the rivers l-anhāru but those who wa-alladhīna disbelieve kafarū they enjoy yatamattaʿūna and eat wayakulūna as kamā eat takulu the cattle l-anʿāmu and the Fire wal-nāru (will be) an abode mathwan for them lahum
Indeed, Allāh will admit those who have believed and done righteous deeds to gardens beneath which rivers flow, but those who disbelieve enjoy themselves and eat as grazing livestock eat, and the Fire will be a residence for them.
وَكَأَيِّن And how many waka-ayyin of min a town qaryatin which hiya (was) stronger ashaddu (in) strength quwwatan than min your town qaryatika which allatī has driven you out akhrajatka We destroyed them ahlaknāhum so no falā helper nāṣira for them lahum
And how many a city was stronger than your city [i.e., Makkah] which drove you out? We destroyed them; and there was no helper for them.
أَفَمَن Then is (he) who afaman is kāna on ʿalā a clear proof bayyinatin from min his Lord rabbihi like (he) who kaman is made attractive zuyyina to him lahu (the) evil sūu (of) his deeds ʿamalihi while they follow wa-ittabaʿū their desires ahwāahum
So is he who is on clear evidence from his Lord like him to whom the evil of his work has been made attractive and they follow their [own] desires?
مَّثَلُ A parable mathalu (of) Paradise l-janati which allatī is promised wuʿida (to) the righteous l-mutaqūna Therein fīhā (are) rivers anhārun of min water māin not ghayri polluted āsinin and rivers wa-anhārun of min milk labanin not lam changes yataghayyar its taste ṭaʿmuhu and rivers wa-anhārun of min wine khamrin delicious ladhatin for (the) drinkers lilshāribīna and rivers wa-anhārun of min honey ʿasalin purified muṣaffan and for them walahum therein fīhā of min all kulli fruits l-thamarāti and forgiveness wamaghfiratun from min their Lord rabbihim like he who kaman like he who huwa (will) abide forever khālidun in fī the Fire l-nāri and they will be given to drink wasuqū water māan boiling ḥamīman so it cuts into pieces faqaṭṭaʿa their intestines amʿāahum
Is the description of Paradise, which the righteous are promised, wherein are rivers of water unaltered,1 rivers of milk the taste of which never changes, rivers of wine delicious to those who drink, and rivers of purified honey, in which they will have from all [kinds of] fruits and forgiveness from their Lord... [Are its inhabitants] like those who abide eternally in the Fire and are given to drink scalding water that will sever their intestines?
وَمِنْهُم And among them wamin'hum (are some) who man listen yastamiʿu to you ilayka until ḥattā when idhā they depart kharajū from min you ʿindika they say qālū to those who lilladhīna were given ūtū the knowledge l-ʿil'ma What mādhā (has) he said qāla just now ānifan Those ulāika (are) the ones alladhīna Allah has set a seal ṭabaʿa Allah has set a seal l-lahu upon ʿalā their hearts qulūbihim and they follow wa-ittabaʿū their desires ahwāahum
And among them, [O Muḥammad], are those who listen to you, until when they depart from you, they say to those who were given knowledge,1 "What has he said just now?" Those are the ones of whom Allāh has sealed over their hearts and who have followed their [own] desires.
وَٱلَّذِينَ And those who wa-alladhīna accept guidance ih'tadaw He increases them zādahum (in) guidance hudan and gives them waātāhum their righteousness taqwāhum
And those who are guided - He increases them in guidance and gives them their righteousness.1
فَهَلْ Then do fahal they wait yanẓurūna but illā (for) the Hour l-sāʿata that an it should come to them tatiyahum suddenly baghtatan But indeed faqad have come jāa its indications ashrāṭuhā Then how fa-annā to them lahum when idhā has come to them jāathum their reminder dhik'rāhum
Then do they await except that the Hour should come upon them unexpectedly? But already there have come [some of] its indications. Then how [i.e., what good] to them, when it has come, will be their remembrance?
فَٱعْلَمْ So know fa-iʿ'lam that [He] annahu (there is) no lā god ilāha but illā Allah l-lahu and ask forgiveness wa-is'taghfir for your sin lidhanbika and for the believing men walil'mu'minīna and the believing women wal-mu'mināti And Allah wal-lahu knows yaʿlamu your movement mutaqallabakum and your resting places wamathwākum
So know, [O Muḥammad], that there is no deity except Allāh and ask forgiveness for your sin1 and for the believing men and believing women. And Allāh knows of your movement and your resting place.
وَيَقُولُ And say wayaqūlu those who alladhīna believe āmanū Why not lawlā has been revealed nuzzilat a Surah sūratun But when fa-idhā is revealed unzilat a Surah sūratun precise muḥ'kamatun and is mentioned wadhukira in it fīhā the fighting l-qitālu you see ra-ayta those who alladhīna in fī their hearts qulūbihim (is) a disease maraḍun looking yanẓurūna at you ilayka a look naẓara (of) one fainting l-maghshiyi (of) one fainting ʿalayhi from mina the death l-mawti But more appropriate fa-awlā for them lahum
Those who believe say, "Why has a sūrah1 not been sent down?" But when a precise sūrah is revealed and battle is mentioned therein, you see those in whose hearts is disease [i.e., hypocrisy] looking at you with a look of one overcome by death. And more appropriate for them2 [would have been]
طَاعَةٌۭ (Is) obedience ṭāʿatun and a word waqawlun kind maʿrūfun And when fa-idhā (is) determined ʿazama the matter l-amru then if falaw they had been true ṣadaqū (to) Allah l-laha surely, it would have been lakāna better khayran for them lahum
Obedience and good words. And when the matter [of fighting] was determined, if they had been true to Allāh, it would have been better for them.
فَهَلْ Then would fahal you perhaps ʿasaytum if in you are given authority tawallaytum that an you cause corruption tuf'sidū in fī the earth l-arḍi and cut off watuqaṭṭiʿū your ties of kinship arḥāmakum
So would you perhaps, if you turned away,1 cause corruption on earth and sever your [ties of] relationship?
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ Those ulāika (are) the ones alladhīna Allah has cursed them laʿanahumu Allah has cursed them l-lahu so He made them deaf fa-aṣammahum and blinded wa-aʿmā their vision abṣārahum
Those [who do so] are the ones that Allāh has cursed, so He deafened them and blinded their vision.
أَفَلَا Then do not afalā they ponder yatadabbarūna (over) the Quran l-qur'āna or am upon ʿalā (their) hearts qulūbin (are) locks aqfāluhā
Then do they not reflect upon the Qur’ān, or are there locks upon [their] hearts?
إِنَّ Indeed inna those who alladhīna return ir'taddū on ʿalā their backs adbārihim after min after baʿdi what mā (has) become clear tabayyana to them lahumu (of) the guidance l-hudā Shaitaan l-shayṭānu enticed sawwala [for] them lahum and prolonged hope wa-amlā for them lahum
Indeed, those who reverted back [to disbelief] after guidance had become clear to them - Satan enticed them and prolonged hope for them.
ذَٰلِكَ That dhālika (is) because they bi-annahum [they] said qālū to those who lilladhīna hate karihū what mā Allah has revealed nazzala Allah has revealed l-lahu We will obey you sanuṭīʿukum in fī part baʿḍi (of) the matter l-amri But Allah wal-lahu knows yaʿlamu their secrets is'rārahum
That is because they said to those who disliked what Allāh sent down,1 "We will obey you in part of the matter." And Allāh knows what they conceal.
فَكَيْفَ Then how fakayfa when idhā take them in death tawaffathumu the Angels l-malāikatu striking yaḍribūna their faces wujūhahum and their backs wa-adbārahum
Then how [will it be] when the angels take them in death, striking their faces and their backs?
ذَٰلِكَ That dhālika (is) because they bi-annahumu followed ittabaʿū what mā angered askhaṭa Allah l-laha and hated wakarihū His pleasure riḍ'wānahu so He made worthless fa-aḥbaṭa their deeds aʿmālahum
That is because they followed what angered Allāh and disliked [what earns] His pleasure, so He rendered worthless their deeds.
أَمْ Or do am think ḥasiba those who alladhīna in fī their hearts qulūbihim (is) a disease maraḍun that an never lan will Allah bring forth yukh'rija will Allah bring forth l-lahu their hatred aḍghānahum
Or do those in whose hearts is disease think that Allāh would never expose their [feelings of] hatred?
وَلَوْ And if walaw We willed nashāu surely, We could show them to you la-araynākahum and you would know them falaʿaraftahum by their marks bisīmāhum but surely, you will know them walataʿrifannahum by fī (the) tone laḥni (of their) speech l-qawli And Allah wal-lahu knows yaʿlamu your deeds aʿmālakum
And if We willed, We could show them to you, and you would know them by their mark; but you will surely know them by the tone of [their] speech. And Allāh knows your deeds.
وَلَنَبْلُوَنَّكُمْ And surely We will test you walanabluwannakum until ḥattā We make evident naʿlama those who strive l-mujāhidīna among you minkum and the patient ones wal-ṣābirīna and We will test wanabluwā your affairs akhbārakum
And We will surely test you until We make evident those who strive among you [for the cause of Allāh] and the patient, and We will test your affairs.
إِنَّ Indeed inna those who alladhīna disbelieve kafarū and turn away waṣaddū from ʿan (the) way of Allah sabīli (the) way of Allah l-lahi and oppose washāqqū the Messenger l-rasūla after min after baʿdi [what] mā (has been) made clear tabayyana to them lahumu the guidance l-hudā never lan will they harm yaḍurrū Allah l-laha (in) anything shayan and He will make worthless wasayuḥ'biṭu their deeds aʿmālahum
Indeed, those who disbelieved and averted [people] from the path of Allāh and opposed the Messenger after guidance had become clear to them - never will they harm Allāh at all, and He will render worthless their deeds.
۞ يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you who believe yāayyuhā O you who believe alladhīna O you who believe āmanū Obey aṭīʿū Allah l-laha and obey wa-aṭīʿū the Messenger l-rasūla and (do) not walā make vain tub'ṭilū your deeds aʿmālakum
O you who have believed, obey Allāh and obey the Messenger and do not invalidate your deeds.
إِنَّ Indeed inna those who alladhīna disbelieve kafarū and turn away waṣaddū from ʿan (the) way sabīli (of) Allah l-lahi then thumma died mātū while they wahum (were) disbelievers kuffārun never falan will Allah forgive yaghfira will Allah forgive l-lahu them lahum
Indeed, those who disbelieved and averted [people] from the path of Allāh and then died while they were disbelievers - never will Allāh forgive them.
فَلَا So (do) not falā weaken tahinū and call watadʿū for ilā peace l-salmi while you wa-antumu (are) superior l-aʿlawna and Allah wal-lahu (is) with you maʿakum and never walan will deprive you yatirakum (of) your deeds aʿmālakum
So do not weaken and call for peace while you are superior; and Allāh is with you and will never deprive you of [the reward of] your deeds.
إِنَّمَا Only innamā the life l-ḥayatu (of) the world l-dun'yā (is) play laʿibun and amusement walahwun And if wa-in you believe tu'minū and fear (Allah) watattaqū He will give you yu'tikum your rewards ujūrakum and not walā will ask you yasalkum (for) your wealth amwālakum
[This] worldly life is only amusement and diversion. And if you believe and fear Allāh, He will give you your rewards and not ask you for your properties.
إِن If in He were to ask you for it yasalkumūhā and press you fayuḥ'fikum you will withhold tabkhalū and He will bring forth wayukh'rij your hatred aḍghānakum
If He should ask you for them and press you, you would withhold, and He would expose your hatred [i.e., unwillingness].
هَـٰٓأَنتُمْ Here you are hāantum these hāulāi called tud'ʿawna to spend litunfiqū in fī (the) way sabīli (of) Allah l-lahi but among you faminkum (are some) who man withhold yabkhalu and whoever waman withholds yabkhal then only fa-innamā he withholds yabkhalu from ʿan himself nafsihi But Allah wal-lahu (is) Free of need l-ghaniyu while you wa-antumu (are) the needy l-fuqarāu And if wa-in you turn away tatawallaw He will replace you yastabdil (with) a people qawman other than you ghayrakum then thumma not lā they will be yakūnū (the) likes of you amthālakum
Here you are - those invited to spend in the cause of Allāh - but among you are those who withhold [out of greed]. And whoever withholds only withholds [benefit] from himself; and Allāh is the Free of need, while you are the needy. And if you turn away [i.e., refuse], He will replace you with another people; then they will not be the likes of you.
