١

Ḥā, Meem.1

— Saheeh International

تَنزِيلُ

(The) revelation

tanzīlu

ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ

(of) the Book

l-kitābi

مِنَ

(is) from

mina

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

ٱلْعَزِيزِ

the All-Mighty

l-ʿazīzi

ٱلْحَكِيمِ

the All-Wise

l-ḥakīmi

٢

The revelation of the Book is from Allāh, the Exalted in Might, the Wise.

— Saheeh International

مَا

Not

خَلَقْنَا

We created

khalaqnā

ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ

the heavens

l-samāwāti

وَٱلْأَرْضَ

and the earth

wal-arḍa

وَمَا

and what

wamā

بَيْنَهُمَآ

(is) between both of them

baynahumā

إِلَّا

except

illā

بِٱلْحَقِّ

in truth

bil-ḥaqi

وَأَجَلٍۢ

and (for) a term

wa-ajalin

مُّسَمًّۭى ۚ

appointed

musamman

وَٱلَّذِينَ

But those who

wa-alladhīna

كَفَرُوا۟

disbelieve

kafarū

عَمَّآ

from what

ʿammā

أُنذِرُوا۟

they are warned

undhirū

مُعْرِضُونَ

(are) turning away

muʿ'riḍūna

٣

We did not create the heavens and earth and what is between them except in truth and [for] a specified term. But those who disbelieve, from that of which they are warned, are turning away.

— Saheeh International

قُلْ

Say

qul

أَرَءَيْتُم

Do you see

ara-aytum

مَّا

what

تَدْعُونَ

you call

tadʿūna

مِن

besides

min

دُونِ

besides

dūni

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

أَرُونِى

Show me

arūnī

مَاذَا

what

mādhā

خَلَقُوا۟

they have created

khalaqū

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلْأَرْضِ

the earth

l-arḍi

أَمْ

or

am

لَهُمْ

for them

lahum

شِرْكٌۭ

(is) any share

shir'kun

فِى

in

ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ ۖ

the heavens

l-samāwāti

ٱئْتُونِى

Bring me

i'tūnī

بِكِتَـٰبٍۢ

a book

bikitābin

مِّن

from

min

قَبْلِ

before

qabli

هَـٰذَآ

this

hādhā

أَوْ

or

aw

أَثَـٰرَةٍۢ

a trace

athāratin

مِّنْ

of

min

عِلْمٍ

knowledge

ʿil'min

إِن

if

in

كُنتُمْ

you are

kuntum

صَـٰدِقِينَ

truthful

ṣādiqīna

٤

Say, [O Muḥammad], "Have you considered that which you invoke besides Allāh? Show me what they have created of the earth; or did they have partnership in [creation of] the heavens? Bring me a scripture [revealed] before this or a [remaining] trace of knowledge, if you should be truthful."

— Saheeh International

وَمَنْ

And who

waman

أَضَلُّ

(is) more astray

aḍallu

مِمَّن

than (he) who

mimman

يَدْعُوا۟

calls

yadʿū

مِن

besides

min

دُونِ

besides

dūni

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

مَن

who

man

لَّا

will not respond

يَسْتَجِيبُ

will not respond

yastajību

لَهُۥٓ

to him

lahu

إِلَىٰ

until

ilā

يَوْمِ

(the) Day

yawmi

ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ

(of) Resurrection

l-qiyāmati

وَهُمْ

and they

wahum

عَن

of

ʿan

دُعَآئِهِمْ

their calls

duʿāihim

غَـٰفِلُونَ

(are) unaware

ghāfilūna

٥

And who is more astray than he who invokes besides Allāh those who will not respond to him until the Day of Resurrection [i.e., never], and they, of their invocation, are unaware.

— Saheeh International

وَإِذَا

And when

wa-idhā

حُشِرَ

are gathered

ḥushira

ٱلنَّاسُ

the people

l-nāsu

كَانُوا۟

they will be

kānū

لَهُمْ

for them

lahum

أَعْدَآءًۭ

enemies

aʿdāan

وَكَانُوا۟

and they will be

wakānū

بِعِبَادَتِهِمْ

of their worship

biʿibādatihim

كَـٰفِرِينَ

deniers

kāfirīna

٦

And when the people are gathered [that Day], they [who were invoked] will be enemies to them, and they will be deniers of their worship.

— Saheeh International

وَإِذَا

And when

wa-idhā

تُتْلَىٰ

are recited

tut'lā

عَلَيْهِمْ

to them

ʿalayhim

ءَايَـٰتُنَا

Our Verses

āyātunā

بَيِّنَـٰتٍۢ

clear

bayyinātin

قَالَ

say

qāla

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

كَفَرُوا۟

disbelieve

kafarū

لِلْحَقِّ

of the truth

lil'ḥaqqi

لَمَّا

when

lammā

جَآءَهُمْ

it comes to them

jāahum

هَـٰذَا

This

hādhā

سِحْرٌۭ

(is) a magic

siḥ'run

مُّبِينٌ

clear

mubīnun

٧

And when Our verses are recited to them as clear evidences, those who disbelieve say of the truth when it has come to them, "This is obvious magic."

— Saheeh International

أَمْ

Or

am

يَقُولُونَ

they say

yaqūlūna

ٱفْتَرَىٰهُ ۖ

He has invented it

if'tarāhu

قُلْ

Say

qul

إِنِ

If

ini

ٱفْتَرَيْتُهُۥ

I have invented it

if'taraytuhu

فَلَا

then not

falā

تَمْلِكُونَ

you have power

tamlikūna

لِى

for me

مِنَ

against

mina

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

شَيْـًٔا ۖ

anything

shayan

هُوَ

He

huwa

أَعْلَمُ

knows best

aʿlamu

بِمَا

of what

bimā

تُفِيضُونَ

you utter

tufīḍūna

فِيهِ ۖ

concerning it

fīhi

كَفَىٰ

Sufficient is He

kafā

بِهِۦ

Sufficient is He

bihi

شَهِيدًۢا

(as) a Witness

shahīdan

بَيْنِى

between me

baynī

وَبَيْنَكُمْ ۖ

and between you

wabaynakum

وَهُوَ

and He

wahuwa

ٱلْغَفُورُ

(is) the Oft-Forgiving

l-ghafūru

ٱلرَّحِيمُ

the Most Merciful

l-raḥīmu

٨

Or do they say, "He has invented it"? Say, "If I have invented it, you will not possess for me [the power of protection] from Allāh at all. He is most knowing of that in which you are involved.1 Sufficient is He as Witness between me and you, and He is the Forgiving, the Merciful."

— Saheeh International

Say

qul

مَا

Not

كُنتُ

I am

kuntu

بِدْعًۭا

a new (one)

bid'ʿan

مِّنَ

among

mina

ٱلرُّسُلِ

the Messengers

l-rusuli

وَمَآ

and not

wamā

أَدْرِى

I know

adrī

مَا

what

يُفْعَلُ

will be done

yuf'ʿalu

بِى

with me

وَلَا

and not

walā

بِكُمْ ۖ

with you

bikum

إِنْ

Not

in

أَتَّبِعُ

I follow

attabiʿu

إِلَّا

but

illā

مَا

what

يُوحَىٰٓ

is revealed

yūḥā

إِلَىَّ

to me

ilayya

وَمَآ

and not

wamā

أَنَا۠

I am

anā

إِلَّا

but

illā

نَذِيرٌۭ

a warner

nadhīrun

مُّبِينٌۭ

clear

mubīnun

٩

Say, "I am not something original among the messengers,1 nor do I know what will be done with me or with you. I only follow that which is revealed to me, and I am not but a clear warner."

— Saheeh International

قُلْ

Say

qul

أَرَءَيْتُمْ

Do you see

ara-aytum

إِن

if

in

كَانَ

it is

kāna

مِنْ

from Allah

min

عِندِ

from Allah

ʿindi

ٱللَّهِ

from Allah

l-lahi

وَكَفَرْتُم

and you disbelieve

wakafartum

بِهِۦ

in it

bihi

وَشَهِدَ

and testifies

washahida

شَاهِدٌۭ

a witness

shāhidun

مِّنۢ

from

min

بَنِىٓ

(the) Children of Israel

banī

إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ

(the) Children of Israel

is'rāīla

عَلَىٰ

to

ʿalā

مِثْلِهِۦ

(the) like thereof

mith'lihi

فَـَٔامَنَ

then he believed

faāmana

وَٱسْتَكْبَرْتُمْ ۖ

while you are arrogant

wa-is'takbartum

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

لَا

(does) not

يَهْدِى

guide

yahdī

ٱلْقَوْمَ

the people

l-qawma

ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ

the wrongdoers

l-ẓālimīna

١٠

Say, "Have you considered: if it [i.e., the Qur’ān] was from Allāh, and you disbelieved in it while a witness from the Children of Israel has testified to something similar1 and believed while you were arrogant...?"2 Indeed, Allāh does not guide the wrongdoing people.

— Saheeh International

وَقَالَ

And say

waqāla

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

كَفَرُوا۟

disbelieve

kafarū

لِلَّذِينَ

of those who

lilladhīna

ءَامَنُوا۟

believe

āmanū

لَوْ

If

law

كَانَ

it had been

kāna

خَيْرًۭا

good

khayran

مَّا

not

سَبَقُونَآ

they (would) have preceded us

sabaqūnā

إِلَيْهِ ۚ

to it

ilayhi

وَإِذْ

And when

wa-idh

لَمْ

not

lam

يَهْتَدُوا۟

they (are) guided

yahtadū

بِهِۦ

by it

bihi

فَسَيَقُولُونَ

they say

fasayaqūlūna

هَـٰذَآ

This

hādhā

إِفْكٌۭ

(is) a lie

if'kun

قَدِيمٌۭ

ancient

qadīmun

١١

And those who disbelieve say of those who believe, "If it had [truly] been good, they would not have preceded us to it." And when they are not guided by it, they will say, "This is an ancient falsehood."

— Saheeh International

وَمِن

And before it

wamin

قَبْلِهِۦ

And before it

qablihi

كِتَـٰبُ

(was the) Scripture

kitābu

مُوسَىٰٓ

(of) Musa

mūsā

إِمَامًۭا

(as) a guide

imāman

وَرَحْمَةًۭ ۚ

and a mercy

waraḥmatan

وَهَـٰذَا

And this

wahādhā

كِتَـٰبٌۭ

(is) a Book

kitābun

مُّصَدِّقٌۭ

confirming

muṣaddiqun

لِّسَانًا

(in) language

lisānan

عَرَبِيًّۭا

Arabic

ʿarabiyyan

لِّيُنذِرَ

to warn

liyundhira

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

ظَلَمُوا۟

do wrong

ẓalamū

وَبُشْرَىٰ

and (as) glad tidings

wabush'rā

لِلْمُحْسِنِينَ

for the good-doers

lil'muḥ'sinīna

١٢

And before it was the scripture of Moses to lead and as a mercy. And this is a confirming Book in an Arabic tongue to warn those who have wronged and as good tidings to the doers of good.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

قَالُوا۟

say

qālū

رَبُّنَا

Our Lord

rabbunā

ٱللَّهُ

(is) Allah

l-lahu

ثُمَّ

then

thumma

ٱسْتَقَـٰمُوا۟

remain firm

is'taqāmū

فَلَا

then no

falā

خَوْفٌ

fear

khawfun

عَلَيْهِمْ

on them

ʿalayhim

وَلَا

and not

walā

هُمْ

they

hum

يَحْزَنُونَ

will grieve

yaḥzanūna

١٣

Indeed, those who have said, "Our Lord is Allāh," and then remained on a right course - there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.

— Saheeh International

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

Those

ulāika

أَصْحَـٰبُ

(are the) companions

aṣḥābu

ٱلْجَنَّةِ

(of) Paradise

l-janati

خَـٰلِدِينَ

abiding forever

khālidīna

فِيهَا

therein

fīhā

جَزَآءًۢ

a reward

jazāan

بِمَا

for what

bimā

كَانُوا۟

they used to

kānū

يَعْمَلُونَ

do

yaʿmalūna

١٤

Those are the companions of Paradise, abiding eternally therein as reward for what they used to do.

— Saheeh International

وَوَصَّيْنَا

And We have enjoined

wawaṣṣaynā

ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ

(on) man

l-insāna

بِوَٰلِدَيْهِ

to his parents

biwālidayhi

إِحْسَـٰنًا ۖ

kindness

iḥ'sānan

حَمَلَتْهُ

Carried him

ḥamalathu

أُمُّهُۥ

his mother

ummuhu

كُرْهًۭا

(with) hardship

kur'han

وَوَضَعَتْهُ

and gave birth to him

wawaḍaʿathu

كُرْهًۭا ۖ

(with) hardship

kur'han

وَحَمْلُهُۥ

And (the) bearing of him

waḥamluhu

وَفِصَـٰلُهُۥ

and (the) weaning of him

wafiṣāluhu

ثَلَـٰثُونَ

(is) thirty

thalāthūna

شَهْرًا ۚ

month(s)

shahran

حَتَّىٰٓ

until

ḥattā

إِذَا

when

idhā

بَلَغَ

he reaches

balagha

أَشُدَّهُۥ

his maturity

ashuddahu

وَبَلَغَ

and reaches

wabalagha

أَرْبَعِينَ

forty

arbaʿīna

سَنَةًۭ

year(s)

sanatan

قَالَ

he says

qāla

رَبِّ

My Lord

rabbi

أَوْزِعْنِىٓ

grant me (the) power

awziʿ'nī

أَنْ

that

an

أَشْكُرَ

I may be grateful

ashkura

نِعْمَتَكَ

(for) Your favor

niʿ'mataka

ٱلَّتِىٓ

which

allatī

أَنْعَمْتَ

You have bestowed

anʿamta

عَلَىَّ

upon me

ʿalayya

وَعَلَىٰ

and upon

waʿalā

وَٰلِدَىَّ

my parents

wālidayya

وَأَنْ

and that

wa-an

أَعْمَلَ

I do

aʿmala

صَـٰلِحًۭا

righteous (deeds)

ṣāliḥan

تَرْضَىٰهُ

which please You

tarḍāhu

وَأَصْلِحْ

and make righteous

wa-aṣliḥ

لِى

for me

فِى

among

ذُرِّيَّتِىٓ ۖ

my offspring

dhurriyyatī

إِنِّى

indeed

innī

تُبْتُ

I turn

tub'tu

إِلَيْكَ

to You

ilayka

وَإِنِّى

and indeed, I am

wa-innī

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلْمُسْلِمِينَ

those who submit

l-mus'limīna

١٥

And We have enjoined upon man, to his parents, good treatment. His mother carried him with hardship and gave birth to him with hardship, and his gestation and weaning [period] is thirty months. [He grows] until, when he reaches maturity and reaches [the age of] forty years, he says, "My Lord, enable me1 to be grateful for Your favor which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents and to work righteousness of which You will approve and make righteous for me my offspring. Indeed, I have repented to You, and indeed, I am of the Muslims."

— Saheeh International

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

Those

ulāika

ٱلَّذِينَ

(are) the ones

alladhīna

نَتَقَبَّلُ

We will accept

nataqabbalu

عَنْهُمْ

from them

ʿanhum

أَحْسَنَ

(the) best

aḥsana

مَا

(of) what

عَمِلُوا۟

they did

ʿamilū

وَنَتَجَاوَزُ

and We will overlook

wanatajāwazu

عَن

[from]

ʿan

سَيِّـَٔاتِهِمْ

their evil deeds

sayyiātihim

فِىٓ

among

أَصْحَـٰبِ

(the) companions

aṣḥābi

ٱلْجَنَّةِ ۖ

(of) Paradise

l-janati

وَعْدَ

A promise

waʿda

ٱلصِّدْقِ

true

l-ṣid'qi

ٱلَّذِى

which

alladhī

كَانُوا۟

they were

kānū

يُوعَدُونَ

promised

yūʿadūna

١٦

Those are the ones from whom We will accept the best of what they did and overlook their misdeeds, [their being] among the companions of Paradise. [That is] the promise of truth which they had been promised.

— Saheeh International

وَٱلَّذِى

But the one who

wa-alladhī

قَالَ

says

qāla

لِوَٰلِدَيْهِ

to his parents

liwālidayhi

أُفٍّۢ

Uff

uffin

لَّكُمَآ

to both of you

lakumā

أَتَعِدَانِنِىٓ

Do you promise me

ataʿidāninī

أَنْ

that

an

أُخْرَجَ

I will be brought forth

ukh'raja

وَقَدْ

and have already passed away

waqad

خَلَتِ

and have already passed away

khalati

ٱلْقُرُونُ

the generations

l-qurūnu

مِن

before me

min

قَبْلِى

before me

qablī

وَهُمَا

And they both

wahumā

يَسْتَغِيثَانِ

seek help

yastaghīthāni

ٱللَّهَ

(of) Allah

l-laha

وَيْلَكَ

Woe to you

waylaka

ءَامِنْ

Believe

āmin

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

وَعْدَ

(the) Promise

waʿda

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

حَقٌّۭ

(is) true

ḥaqqun

فَيَقُولُ

But he says

fayaqūlu

مَا

Not

هَـٰذَآ

(is) this

hādhā

إِلَّآ

but

illā

أَسَـٰطِيرُ

(the) stories

asāṭīru

ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ

(of) the former (people)

l-awalīna

١٧

But one who says to his parents, "Uff1 to you; do you promise me that I will be brought forth [from the earth] when generations before me have already passed on [into oblivion]?" while they call to Allāh for help [and to their son], "Woe to you! Believe! Indeed, the promise of Allāh is truth." But he says, "This is not but legends of the former peoples" -

— Saheeh International

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

Those

ulāika

ٱلَّذِينَ

(are) the ones

alladhīna

حَقَّ

(has) proved true

ḥaqqa

عَلَيْهِمُ

against them

ʿalayhimu

ٱلْقَوْلُ

the word

l-qawlu

فِىٓ

among

أُمَمٍۢ

nations

umamin

قَدْ

(that) already passed away

qad

خَلَتْ

(that) already passed away

khalat

مِن

before them

min

قَبْلِهِم

before them

qablihim

مِّنَ

of

mina

ٱلْجِنِّ

(the) jinn

l-jini

وَٱلْإِنسِ ۖ

and the men

wal-insi

إِنَّهُمْ

Indeed, they

innahum

كَانُوا۟

are

kānū

خَـٰسِرِينَ

(the) losers

khāsirīna

١٨

Those are the ones upon whom the word [i.e., decree] has come into effect, [who will be] among nations which had passed on before them of jinn and men. Indeed, they [all] were losers.

— Saheeh International

وَلِكُلٍّۢ

And for all

walikullin

دَرَجَـٰتٌۭ

(are) degrees

darajātun

مِّمَّا

for what

mimmā

عَمِلُوا۟ ۖ

they did

ʿamilū

وَلِيُوَفِّيَهُمْ

and that He may fully compensate them

waliyuwaffiyahum

أَعْمَـٰلَهُمْ

(for) their deeds

aʿmālahum

وَهُمْ

and they

wahum

لَا

will not be wronged

يُظْلَمُونَ

will not be wronged

yuẓ'lamūna

١٩

And for all there are degrees [of reward and punishment] for what they have done, and [it is] so that He may fully compensate them for their deeds, and they will not be wronged.

— Saheeh International

وَيَوْمَ

And (the) Day

wayawma

يُعْرَضُ

will be exposed

yuʿ'raḍu

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

كَفَرُوا۟

disbelieved

kafarū

عَلَى

to

ʿalā

ٱلنَّارِ

the Fire

l-nāri

أَذْهَبْتُمْ

You exhausted

adhhabtum

طَيِّبَـٰتِكُمْ

your good things

ṭayyibātikum

فِى

in

حَيَاتِكُمُ

your life

ḥayātikumu

ٱلدُّنْيَا

(of) the world

l-dun'yā

وَٱسْتَمْتَعْتُم

and you took your pleasures

wa-is'tamtaʿtum

بِهَا

therein

bihā

فَٱلْيَوْمَ

So today

fal-yawma

تُجْزَوْنَ

you will be recompensed

tuj'zawna

عَذَابَ

(with) a punishment

ʿadhāba

ٱلْهُونِ

humiliating

l-hūni

بِمَا

because

bimā

كُنتُمْ

you were

kuntum

تَسْتَكْبِرُونَ

arrogant

tastakbirūna

فِى

in

ٱلْأَرْضِ

the earth

l-arḍi

بِغَيْرِ

without

bighayri

ٱلْحَقِّ

[the] right

l-ḥaqi

وَبِمَا

and because

wabimā

كُنتُمْ

you were

kuntum

تَفْسُقُونَ

defiantly disobedient

tafsuqūna

٢٠

And the Day those who disbelieved are exposed to the Fire [it will be said], "You exhausted your pleasures during your worldly life and enjoyed them, so this Day you will be awarded the punishment of [extreme] humiliation because you were arrogant upon the earth without right and because you were defiantly disobedient."

— Saheeh International

۞ وَٱذْكُرْ

And mention

wa-udh'kur

أَخَا

(the) brother

akhā

عَادٍ

(of) Aad

ʿādin

إِذْ

when

idh

أَنذَرَ

he warned

andhara

قَوْمَهُۥ

his people

qawmahu

بِٱلْأَحْقَافِ

in the Al-Ahqaf

bil-aḥqāfi

وَقَدْ

and had already passed away

waqad

خَلَتِ

and had already passed away

khalati

ٱلنُّذُرُ

[the] warners

l-nudhuru

مِنۢ

before him

min

بَيْنِ

before him

bayni

يَدَيْهِ

before him

yadayhi

وَمِنْ

and after him

wamin

خَلْفِهِۦٓ

and after him

khalfihi

أَلَّا

That not

allā

تَعْبُدُوٓا۟

you worship

taʿbudū

إِلَّا

except

illā

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

إِنِّىٓ

Indeed, I

innī

أَخَافُ

[I] fear

akhāfu

عَلَيْكُمْ

for you

ʿalaykum

عَذَابَ

a punishment

ʿadhāba

يَوْمٍ

(of) a Day

yawmin

عَظِيمٍۢ

Great

ʿaẓīmin

٢١

And mention, [O Muḥammad], the brother of ʿAad,1 when he warned his people in [the region of] al-Aḥqāf - and warners had already passed on before him and after him - [saying], "Do not worship except Allāh. Indeed, I fear for you the punishment of a terrible day."2

— Saheeh International

قَالُوٓا۟

They said

qālū

أَجِئْتَنَا

Have you come to us

aji'tanā

لِتَأْفِكَنَا

to turn us away

litafikanā

عَنْ

from

ʿan

ءَالِهَتِنَا

our gods

ālihatinā

فَأْتِنَا

Then bring us

fatinā

بِمَا

what

bimā

تَعِدُنَآ

you threaten us

taʿidunā

إِن

if

in

كُنتَ

you are

kunta

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ

the truthful

l-ṣādiqīna

٢٢

They said, "Have you come to delude us away from our gods? Then bring us what you promise us, if you should be of the truthful."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

إِنَّمَا

Only

innamā

ٱلْعِلْمُ

the knowledge

l-ʿil'mu

عِندَ

(is) with Allah

ʿinda

ٱللَّهِ

(is) with Allah

l-lahi

وَأُبَلِّغُكُم

and I convey to you

wa-uballighukum

مَّآ

what

أُرْسِلْتُ

I am sent

ur'sil'tu

بِهِۦ

with it

bihi

وَلَـٰكِنِّىٓ

but

walākinnī

أَرَىٰكُمْ

I see you

arākum

قَوْمًۭا

a people

qawman

تَجْهَلُونَ

ignorant

tajhalūna

٢٣

He said, "Knowledge [of its time] is only with Allāh, and I convey to you that with which I was sent; but I see you [to be] a people behaving ignorantly."

— Saheeh International

فَلَمَّا

Then when

falammā

رَأَوْهُ

they saw it

ra-awhu

عَارِضًۭا

(as) a cloud

ʿāriḍan

مُّسْتَقْبِلَ

approaching

mus'taqbila

أَوْدِيَتِهِمْ

their valleys

awdiyatihim

قَالُوا۟

they said

qālū

هَـٰذَا

This

hādhā

عَارِضٌۭ

(is) a cloud

ʿāriḍun

مُّمْطِرُنَا ۚ

bringing us rain

mum'ṭirunā

بَلْ

Nay

bal

هُوَ

it

huwa

مَا

(is) what

ٱسْتَعْجَلْتُم

you were asking it to be hastened

is'taʿjaltum

بِهِۦ ۖ

you were asking it to be hastened

bihi

رِيحٌۭ

a wind

rīḥun

فِيهَا

in it

fīhā

عَذَابٌ

(is) a punishment

ʿadhābun

أَلِيمٌۭ

painful

alīmun

٢٤

And when they saw it as a cloud approaching their valleys, they said, "This is a cloud bringing us rain!" Rather, it is that for which you were impatient:1 a wind, within it a painful punishment,

— Saheeh International

تُدَمِّرُ

Destroying

tudammiru

كُلَّ

every

kulla

شَىْءٍۭ

thing

shayin

بِأَمْرِ

by (the) command

bi-amri

رَبِّهَا

(of) its Lord

rabbihā

فَأَصْبَحُوا۟

Then they became (such)

fa-aṣbaḥū

لَا

not

يُرَىٰٓ

is seen

yurā

إِلَّا

except

illā

مَسَـٰكِنُهُمْ ۚ

their dwellings

masākinuhum

كَذَٰلِكَ

Thus

kadhālika

نَجْزِى

We recompense

najzī

ٱلْقَوْمَ

the people

l-qawma

ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ

[the] criminals

l-muj'rimīna

٢٥

Destroying everything by command of its Lord. And they became so that nothing was seen [of them] except their dwellings. Thus do We recompense the criminal people.

— Saheeh International

وَلَقَدْ

And certainly

walaqad

مَكَّنَّـٰهُمْ

We had established them

makkannāhum

فِيمَآ

in what

fīmā

إِن

not

in

مَّكَّنَّـٰكُمْ

We have established you

makkannākum

فِيهِ

in it

fīhi

وَجَعَلْنَا

and We made

wajaʿalnā

لَهُمْ

for them

lahum

سَمْعًۭا

hearing

samʿan

وَأَبْصَـٰرًۭا

and vision

wa-abṣāran

وَأَفْـِٔدَةًۭ

and hearts

wa-afidatan

فَمَآ

But not

famā

أَغْنَىٰ

availed

aghnā

عَنْهُمْ

them

ʿanhum

سَمْعُهُمْ

their hearing

samʿuhum

وَلَآ

and not

walā

أَبْصَـٰرُهُمْ

their vision

abṣāruhum

وَلَآ

and not

walā

أَفْـِٔدَتُهُم

their hearts

afidatuhum

مِّن

any

min

شَىْءٍ

thing

shayin

إِذْ

when

idh

كَانُوا۟

they were

kānū

يَجْحَدُونَ

rejecting

yajḥadūna

بِـَٔايَـٰتِ

(the) Signs

biāyāti

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

وَحَاقَ

and enveloped

waḥāqa

بِهِم

them

bihim

مَّا

what

كَانُوا۟

they used to

kānū

بِهِۦ

[at it]

bihi

يَسْتَهْزِءُونَ

ridicule

yastahziūna

٢٦

And We had certainly established them in such as We have not established you, and We made for them hearing and vision and hearts [i.e., intellect]. But their hearing and vision and hearts availed them not from anything [of the punishment] when they were [continually] rejecting the signs of Allāh; and they were enveloped by what they used to ridicule.

— Saheeh International

وَلَقَدْ

And certainly

walaqad

أَهْلَكْنَا

We destroyed

ahlaknā

مَا

what

حَوْلَكُم

surrounds you

ḥawlakum

مِّنَ

of

mina

ٱلْقُرَىٰ

the towns

l-qurā

وَصَرَّفْنَا

and We have diversified

waṣarrafnā

ٱلْـَٔايَـٰتِ

the Signs

l-āyāti

لَعَلَّهُمْ

that they may

laʿallahum

يَرْجِعُونَ

return

yarjiʿūna

٢٧

And We have already destroyed what surrounds you of [those] cities, and We have diversified the signs [or verses] that perhaps they might return [from disbelief].

— Saheeh International

فَلَوْلَا

Then why (did) not

falawlā

نَصَرَهُمُ

help them

naṣarahumu

ٱلَّذِينَ

those whom

alladhīna

ٱتَّخَذُوا۟

they had taken

ittakhadhū

مِن

besides

min

دُونِ

besides

dūni

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

قُرْبَانًا

gods as a way of approach

qur'bānan

ءَالِهَةًۢ ۖ

gods as a way of approach

ālihatan

بَلْ

Nay

bal

ضَلُّوا۟

they were lost

ḍallū

عَنْهُمْ ۚ

from them

ʿanhum

وَذَٰلِكَ

And that

wadhālika

إِفْكُهُمْ

(was) their falsehood

if'kuhum

وَمَا

and what

wamā

كَانُوا۟

they were

kānū

يَفْتَرُونَ

inventing

yaftarūna

٢٨

Then why did those they took besides Allāh as deities by which to approach [Him]1 not aid them? But they had strayed [i.e., departed] from them. And that was their falsehood and what they were inventing.

— Saheeh International

وَإِذْ

And when

wa-idh

صَرَفْنَآ

We directed

ṣarafnā

إِلَيْكَ

to you

ilayka

نَفَرًۭا

a party

nafaran

مِّنَ

of

mina

ٱلْجِنِّ

the jinn

l-jini

يَسْتَمِعُونَ

listening

yastamiʿūna

ٱلْقُرْءَانَ

(to) the Quran

l-qur'āna

فَلَمَّا

And when

falammā

حَضَرُوهُ

they attended it

ḥaḍarūhu

قَالُوٓا۟

they said

qālū

أَنصِتُوا۟ ۖ

Listen quietly

anṣitū

فَلَمَّا

And when

falammā

قُضِىَ

it was concluded

quḍiya

وَلَّوْا۟

they turned back

wallaw

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

قَوْمِهِم

their people

qawmihim

مُّنذِرِينَ

(as) warners

mundhirīna

٢٩

And [mention, O Muḥammad], when We directed to you a few of the jinn, listening to the Qur’ān. And when they attended it, they said, "Listen attentively." And when it was concluded, they went back to their people as warners.

— Saheeh International

قَالُوا۟

They said

qālū

يَـٰقَوْمَنَآ

O our people

yāqawmanā

إِنَّا

Indeed, we

innā

سَمِعْنَا

[we] have heard

samiʿ'nā

كِتَـٰبًا

a Book

kitāban

أُنزِلَ

revealed

unzila

مِنۢ

after

min

بَعْدِ

after

baʿdi

مُوسَىٰ

Musa

mūsā

مُصَدِّقًۭا

confirming

muṣaddiqan

لِّمَا

what

limā

بَيْنَ

(was) before it

bayna

يَدَيْهِ

(was) before it

yadayhi

يَهْدِىٓ

guiding

yahdī

إِلَى

to

ilā

ٱلْحَقِّ

the truth

l-ḥaqi

وَإِلَىٰ

and to

wa-ilā

طَرِيقٍۢ

a Path

ṭarīqin

مُّسْتَقِيمٍۢ

Straight

mus'taqīmin

٣٠

They said, "O our people, indeed we have heard a [recited] Book revealed after Moses confirming what was before it which guides to the truth and to a straight path.

— Saheeh International

يَـٰقَوْمَنَآ

O our people

yāqawmanā

أَجِيبُوا۟

Respond

ajībū

دَاعِىَ

(to the) caller

dāʿiya

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

وَءَامِنُوا۟

and believe

waāminū

بِهِۦ

in him

bihi

يَغْفِرْ

He will forgive

yaghfir

لَكُم

for you

lakum

مِّن

of

min

ذُنُوبِكُمْ

your sins

dhunūbikum

وَيُجِرْكُم

and will protect you

wayujir'kum

مِّنْ

from

min

عَذَابٍ

a punishment

ʿadhābin

أَلِيمٍۢ

painful

alīmin

٣١

O our people, respond to the Caller [i.e., Messenger] of Allāh1 and believe in him; He [i.e., Allāh] will forgive for you your sins and protect you from a painful punishment.

— Saheeh International

وَمَن

And whoever

waman

لَّا

(does) not

يُجِبْ

respond

yujib

دَاعِىَ

(to the) caller

dāʿiya

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

فَلَيْسَ

then not

falaysa

بِمُعْجِزٍۢ

he can escape

bimuʿ'jizin

فِى

in

ٱلْأَرْضِ

the earth

l-arḍi

وَلَيْسَ

and not

walaysa

لَهُۥ

for him

lahu

مِن

besides Him

min

دُونِهِۦٓ

besides Him

dūnihi

أَوْلِيَآءُ ۚ

protectors

awliyāu

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

Those

ulāika

فِى

(are) in

ضَلَـٰلٍۢ

error

ḍalālin

مُّبِينٍ

clear

mubīnin

٣٢

But he who does not respond to the Caller of Allāh will not cause failure [to Him] upon earth, and he will not have besides Him any protectors. Those are in manifest error."

— Saheeh International

أَوَلَمْ

Do not

awalam

يَرَوْا۟

they see

yaraw

أَنَّ

that

anna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

ٱلَّذِى

(is) the One Who

alladhī

خَلَقَ

created

khalaqa

ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ

the heavens

l-samāwāti

وَٱلْأَرْضَ

and the earth

wal-arḍa

وَلَمْ

and (was) not

walam

يَعْىَ

tired

yaʿya

بِخَلْقِهِنَّ

by their creation

bikhalqihinna

بِقَـٰدِرٍ

(is) able

biqādirin

عَلَىٰٓ

to give life

ʿalā

أَن

to give life

an

يُحْـِۧىَ

to give life

yuḥ'yiya

ٱلْمَوْتَىٰ ۚ

(to) the dead

l-mawtā

بَلَىٰٓ

Yes

balā

إِنَّهُۥ

indeed He

innahu

عَلَىٰ

(is) on

ʿalā

كُلِّ

every

kulli

شَىْءٍۢ

thing

shayin

قَدِيرٌۭ

All-Powerful

qadīrun

٣٣

Do they not see that Allāh, who created the heavens and earth and did not fail in their creation, is able to give life to the dead? Yes. Indeed, He is over all things competent.

— Saheeh International

وَيَوْمَ

And (the) Day

wayawma

يُعْرَضُ

are exposed

yuʿ'raḍu

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

كَفَرُوا۟

disbelieved

kafarū

عَلَى

to

ʿalā

ٱلنَّارِ

the Fire

l-nāri

أَلَيْسَ

Is not

alaysa

هَـٰذَا

this

hādhā

بِٱلْحَقِّ ۖ

the truth

bil-ḥaqi

قَالُوا۟

They will say

qālū

بَلَىٰ

Yes

balā

وَرَبِّنَا ۚ

by our Lord

warabbinā

قَالَ

He will say

qāla

فَذُوقُوا۟

Then taste

fadhūqū

ٱلْعَذَابَ

the punishment

l-ʿadhāba

بِمَا

because

bimā

كُنتُمْ

you used to

kuntum

تَكْفُرُونَ

disbelieve

takfurūna

٣٤

And the Day those who disbelieved are exposed to the Fire [it will be said], "Is this not the truth?" They will say, "Yes, by our Lord." He will say, "Then taste the punishment for what you used to deny."1

— Saheeh International

فَٱصْبِرْ

So be patient

fa-iṣ'bir

كَمَا

as

kamā

صَبَرَ

had patience

ṣabara

أُو۟لُوا۟

those of determination

ulū

ٱلْعَزْمِ

those of determination

l-ʿazmi

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلرُّسُلِ

the Messengers

l-rusuli

وَلَا

and (do) not

walā

تَسْتَعْجِل

seek to hasten

tastaʿjil

لَّهُمْ ۚ

for them

lahum

كَأَنَّهُمْ

As if they had

ka-annahum

يَوْمَ

(the) Day

yawma

يَرَوْنَ

they see

yarawna

مَا

what

يُوعَدُونَ

they were promised

yūʿadūna

لَمْ

not

lam

يَلْبَثُوٓا۟

remained

yalbathū

إِلَّا

except

illā

سَاعَةًۭ

an hour

sāʿatan

مِّن

of

min

نَّهَارٍۭ ۚ

a day

nahārin

بَلَـٰغٌۭ ۚ

A notification

balāghun

فَهَلْ

But will

fahal

يُهْلَكُ

(any) be destroyed

yuh'laku

إِلَّا

except

illā

ٱلْقَوْمُ

the people

l-qawmu

ٱلْفَـٰسِقُونَ

the defiantly disobedient

l-fāsiqūna

٣٥

So be patient, [O Muḥammad], as were those of determination among the messengers and do not be impatient for them.1 It will be - on the Day they see that which they are promised - as though they had not remained [in the world] except an hour of a day. [This is] notification. And will [any] be destroyed except the defiantly disobedient people?

— Saheeh International
