الأحقاف
تَنزِيلُ (The) revelation tanzīlu (of) the Book l-kitābi (is) from mina Allah l-lahi the All-Mighty l-ʿazīzi the All-Wise l-ḥakīmi
The revelation of the Book is from Allāh, the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
مَا Not mā We created khalaqnā the heavens l-samāwāti and the earth wal-arḍa and what wamā (is) between both of them baynahumā except illā in truth bil-ḥaqi and (for) a term wa-ajalin appointed musamman But those who wa-alladhīna disbelieve kafarū from what ʿammā they are warned undhirū (are) turning away muʿ'riḍūna
We did not create the heavens and earth and what is between them except in truth and [for] a specified term. But those who disbelieve, from that of which they are warned, are turning away.
قُلْ Say qul Do you see ara-aytum what mā you call tadʿūna besides min besides dūni Allah l-lahi Show me arūnī what mādhā they have created khalaqū of mina the earth l-arḍi or am for them lahum (is) any share shir'kun in fī the heavens l-samāwāti Bring me i'tūnī a book bikitābin from min before qabli this hādhā or aw a trace athāratin of min knowledge ʿil'min if in you are kuntum truthful ṣādiqīna
Say, [O Muḥammad], "Have you considered that which you invoke besides Allāh? Show me what they have created of the earth; or did they have partnership in [creation of] the heavens? Bring me a scripture [revealed] before this or a [remaining] trace of knowledge, if you should be truthful."
وَمَنْ And who waman (is) more astray aḍallu than (he) who mimman calls yadʿū besides min besides dūni Allah l-lahi who man will not respond lā will not respond yastajību to him lahu until ilā (the) Day yawmi (of) Resurrection l-qiyāmati and they wahum of ʿan their calls duʿāihim (are) unaware ghāfilūna
And who is more astray than he who invokes besides Allāh those who will not respond to him until the Day of Resurrection [i.e., never], and they, of their invocation, are unaware.
وَإِذَا And when wa-idhā are gathered ḥushira the people l-nāsu they will be kānū for them lahum enemies aʿdāan and they will be wakānū of their worship biʿibādatihim deniers kāfirīna
And when the people are gathered [that Day], they [who were invoked] will be enemies to them, and they will be deniers of their worship.
وَإِذَا And when wa-idhā are recited tut'lā to them ʿalayhim Our Verses āyātunā clear bayyinātin say qāla those who alladhīna disbelieve kafarū of the truth lil'ḥaqqi when lammā it comes to them jāahum This hādhā (is) a magic siḥ'run clear mubīnun
And when Our verses are recited to them as clear evidences, those who disbelieve say of the truth when it has come to them, "This is obvious magic."
أَمْ Or am they say yaqūlūna He has invented it if'tarāhu Say qul If ini I have invented it if'taraytuhu then not falā you have power tamlikūna for me lī against mina Allah l-lahi anything shayan He huwa knows best aʿlamu of what bimā you utter tufīḍūna concerning it fīhi Sufficient is He kafā Sufficient is He bihi (as) a Witness shahīdan between me baynī and between you wabaynakum and He wahuwa (is) the Oft-Forgiving l-ghafūru the Most Merciful l-raḥīmu
Or do they say, "He has invented it"? Say, "If I have invented it, you will not possess for me [the power of protection] from Allāh at all. He is most knowing of that in which you are involved.1 Sufficient is He as Witness between me and you, and He is the Forgiving, the Merciful."
قُلْ Say qul Not mā I am kuntu a new (one) bid'ʿan among mina the Messengers l-rusuli and not wamā I know adrī what mā will be done yuf'ʿalu with me bī and not walā with you bikum Not in I follow attabiʿu but illā what mā is revealed yūḥā to me ilayya and not wamā I am anā but illā a warner nadhīrun clear mubīnun
Say, "I am not something original among the messengers,1 nor do I know what will be done with me or with you. I only follow that which is revealed to me, and I am not but a clear warner."
قُلْ Say qul Do you see ara-aytum if in it is kāna from Allah min from Allah ʿindi from Allah l-lahi and you disbelieve wakafartum in it bihi and testifies washahida a witness shāhidun from min (the) Children of Israel banī (the) Children of Israel is'rāīla to ʿalā (the) like thereof mith'lihi then he believed faāmana while you are arrogant wa-is'takbartum Indeed inna Allah l-laha (does) not lā guide yahdī the people l-qawma the wrongdoers l-ẓālimīna
Say, "Have you considered: if it [i.e., the Qur’ān] was from Allāh, and you disbelieved in it while a witness from the Children of Israel has testified to something similar1 and believed while you were arrogant...?"2 Indeed, Allāh does not guide the wrongdoing people.
وَقَالَ And say waqāla those who alladhīna disbelieve kafarū of those who lilladhīna believe āmanū If law it had been kāna good khayran not mā they (would) have preceded us sabaqūnā to it ilayhi And when wa-idh not lam they (are) guided yahtadū by it bihi they say fasayaqūlūna This hādhā (is) a lie if'kun ancient qadīmun
And those who disbelieve say of those who believe, "If it had [truly] been good, they would not have preceded us to it." And when they are not guided by it, they will say, "This is an ancient falsehood."
وَمِن And before it wamin And before it qablihi (was the) Scripture kitābu (of) Musa mūsā (as) a guide imāman and a mercy waraḥmatan And this wahādhā (is) a Book kitābun confirming muṣaddiqun (in) language lisānan Arabic ʿarabiyyan to warn liyundhira those who alladhīna do wrong ẓalamū and (as) glad tidings wabush'rā for the good-doers lil'muḥ'sinīna
And before it was the scripture of Moses to lead and as a mercy. And this is a confirming Book in an Arabic tongue to warn those who have wronged and as good tidings to the doers of good.
إِنَّ Indeed inna those who alladhīna say qālū Our Lord rabbunā (is) Allah l-lahu then thumma remain firm is'taqāmū then no falā fear khawfun on them ʿalayhim and not walā they hum will grieve yaḥzanūna
Indeed, those who have said, "Our Lord is Allāh," and then remained on a right course - there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ Those ulāika (are the) companions aṣḥābu (of) Paradise l-janati abiding forever khālidīna therein fīhā a reward jazāan for what bimā they used to kānū do yaʿmalūna
Those are the companions of Paradise, abiding eternally therein as reward for what they used to do.
وَوَصَّيْنَا And We have enjoined wawaṣṣaynā (on) man l-insāna to his parents biwālidayhi kindness iḥ'sānan Carried him ḥamalathu his mother ummuhu (with) hardship kur'han and gave birth to him wawaḍaʿathu (with) hardship kur'han And (the) bearing of him waḥamluhu and (the) weaning of him wafiṣāluhu (is) thirty thalāthūna month(s) shahran until ḥattā when idhā he reaches balagha his maturity ashuddahu and reaches wabalagha forty arbaʿīna year(s) sanatan he says qāla My Lord rabbi grant me (the) power awziʿ'nī that an I may be grateful ashkura (for) Your favor niʿ'mataka which allatī You have bestowed anʿamta upon me ʿalayya and upon waʿalā my parents wālidayya and that wa-an I do aʿmala righteous (deeds) ṣāliḥan which please You tarḍāhu and make righteous wa-aṣliḥ for me lī among fī my offspring dhurriyyatī indeed innī I turn tub'tu to You ilayka and indeed, I am wa-innī of mina those who submit l-mus'limīna
And We have enjoined upon man, to his parents, good treatment. His mother carried him with hardship and gave birth to him with hardship, and his gestation and weaning [period] is thirty months. [He grows] until, when he reaches maturity and reaches [the age of] forty years, he says, "My Lord, enable me1 to be grateful for Your favor which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents and to work righteousness of which You will approve and make righteous for me my offspring. Indeed, I have repented to You, and indeed, I am of the Muslims."
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ Those ulāika (are) the ones alladhīna We will accept nataqabbalu from them ʿanhum (the) best aḥsana (of) what mā they did ʿamilū and We will overlook wanatajāwazu [from] ʿan their evil deeds sayyiātihim among fī (the) companions aṣḥābi (of) Paradise l-janati A promise waʿda true l-ṣid'qi which alladhī they were kānū promised yūʿadūna
Those are the ones from whom We will accept the best of what they did and overlook their misdeeds, [their being] among the companions of Paradise. [That is] the promise of truth which they had been promised.
وَٱلَّذِى But the one who wa-alladhī says qāla to his parents liwālidayhi Uff uffin to both of you lakumā Do you promise me ataʿidāninī that an I will be brought forth ukh'raja and have already passed away waqad and have already passed away khalati the generations l-qurūnu before me min before me qablī And they both wahumā seek help yastaghīthāni (of) Allah l-laha Woe to you waylaka Believe āmin Indeed inna (the) Promise waʿda (of) Allah l-lahi (is) true ḥaqqun But he says fayaqūlu Not mā (is) this hādhā but illā (the) stories asāṭīru (of) the former (people) l-awalīna
But one who says to his parents, "Uff1 to you; do you promise me that I will be brought forth [from the earth] when generations before me have already passed on [into oblivion]?" while they call to Allāh for help [and to their son], "Woe to you! Believe! Indeed, the promise of Allāh is truth." But he says, "This is not but legends of the former peoples" -
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ Those ulāika (are) the ones alladhīna (has) proved true ḥaqqa against them ʿalayhimu the word l-qawlu among fī nations umamin (that) already passed away qad (that) already passed away khalat before them min before them qablihim of mina (the) jinn l-jini and the men wal-insi Indeed, they innahum are kānū (the) losers khāsirīna
Those are the ones upon whom the word [i.e., decree] has come into effect, [who will be] among nations which had passed on before them of jinn and men. Indeed, they [all] were losers.
وَلِكُلٍّۢ And for all walikullin (are) degrees darajātun for what mimmā they did ʿamilū and that He may fully compensate them waliyuwaffiyahum (for) their deeds aʿmālahum and they wahum will not be wronged lā will not be wronged yuẓ'lamūna
And for all there are degrees [of reward and punishment] for what they have done, and [it is] so that He may fully compensate them for their deeds, and they will not be wronged.
وَيَوْمَ And (the) Day wayawma will be exposed yuʿ'raḍu those who alladhīna disbelieved kafarū to ʿalā the Fire l-nāri You exhausted adhhabtum your good things ṭayyibātikum in fī your life ḥayātikumu (of) the world l-dun'yā and you took your pleasures wa-is'tamtaʿtum therein bihā So today fal-yawma you will be recompensed tuj'zawna (with) a punishment ʿadhāba humiliating l-hūni because bimā you were kuntum arrogant tastakbirūna in fī the earth l-arḍi without bighayri [the] right l-ḥaqi and because wabimā you were kuntum defiantly disobedient tafsuqūna
And the Day those who disbelieved are exposed to the Fire [it will be said], "You exhausted your pleasures during your worldly life and enjoyed them, so this Day you will be awarded the punishment of [extreme] humiliation because you were arrogant upon the earth without right and because you were defiantly disobedient."
۞ وَٱذْكُرْ And mention wa-udh'kur (the) brother akhā (of) Aad ʿādin when idh he warned andhara his people qawmahu in the Al-Ahqaf bil-aḥqāfi and had already passed away waqad and had already passed away khalati [the] warners l-nudhuru before him min before him bayni before him yadayhi and after him wamin and after him khalfihi That not allā you worship taʿbudū except illā Allah l-laha Indeed, I innī [I] fear akhāfu for you ʿalaykum a punishment ʿadhāba (of) a Day yawmin Great ʿaẓīmin
And mention, [O Muḥammad], the brother of ʿAad,1 when he warned his people in [the region of] al-Aḥqāf - and warners had already passed on before him and after him - [saying], "Do not worship except Allāh. Indeed, I fear for you the punishment of a terrible day."2
قَالُوٓا۟ They said qālū Have you come to us aji'tanā to turn us away litafikanā from ʿan our gods ālihatinā Then bring us fatinā what bimā you threaten us taʿidunā if in you are kunta of mina the truthful l-ṣādiqīna
They said, "Have you come to delude us away from our gods? Then bring us what you promise us, if you should be of the truthful."
قَالَ He said qāla Only innamā the knowledge l-ʿil'mu (is) with Allah ʿinda (is) with Allah l-lahi and I convey to you wa-uballighukum what mā I am sent ur'sil'tu with it bihi but walākinnī I see you arākum a people qawman ignorant tajhalūna
He said, "Knowledge [of its time] is only with Allāh, and I convey to you that with which I was sent; but I see you [to be] a people behaving ignorantly."
فَلَمَّا Then when falammā they saw it ra-awhu (as) a cloud ʿāriḍan approaching mus'taqbila their valleys awdiyatihim they said qālū This hādhā (is) a cloud ʿāriḍun bringing us rain mum'ṭirunā Nay bal it huwa (is) what mā you were asking it to be hastened is'taʿjaltum you were asking it to be hastened bihi a wind rīḥun in it fīhā (is) a punishment ʿadhābun painful alīmun
And when they saw it as a cloud approaching their valleys, they said, "This is a cloud bringing us rain!" Rather, it is that for which you were impatient:1 a wind, within it a painful punishment,
تُدَمِّرُ Destroying tudammiru every kulla thing shayin by (the) command bi-amri (of) its Lord rabbihā Then they became (such) fa-aṣbaḥū not lā is seen yurā except illā their dwellings masākinuhum Thus kadhālika We recompense najzī the people l-qawma [the] criminals l-muj'rimīna
Destroying everything by command of its Lord. And they became so that nothing was seen [of them] except their dwellings. Thus do We recompense the criminal people.
وَلَقَدْ And certainly walaqad We had established them makkannāhum in what fīmā not in We have established you makkannākum in it fīhi and We made wajaʿalnā for them lahum hearing samʿan and vision wa-abṣāran and hearts wa-afidatan But not famā availed aghnā them ʿanhum their hearing samʿuhum and not walā their vision abṣāruhum and not walā their hearts afidatuhum any min thing shayin when idh they were kānū rejecting yajḥadūna (the) Signs biāyāti (of) Allah l-lahi and enveloped waḥāqa them bihim what mā they used to kānū [at it] bihi ridicule yastahziūna
And We had certainly established them in such as We have not established you, and We made for them hearing and vision and hearts [i.e., intellect]. But their hearing and vision and hearts availed them not from anything [of the punishment] when they were [continually] rejecting the signs of Allāh; and they were enveloped by what they used to ridicule.
وَلَقَدْ And certainly walaqad We destroyed ahlaknā what mā surrounds you ḥawlakum of mina the towns l-qurā and We have diversified waṣarrafnā the Signs l-āyāti that they may laʿallahum return yarjiʿūna
And We have already destroyed what surrounds you of [those] cities, and We have diversified the signs [or verses] that perhaps they might return [from disbelief].
فَلَوْلَا Then why (did) not falawlā help them naṣarahumu those whom alladhīna they had taken ittakhadhū besides min besides dūni Allah l-lahi gods as a way of approach qur'bānan gods as a way of approach ālihatan Nay bal they were lost ḍallū from them ʿanhum And that wadhālika (was) their falsehood if'kuhum and what wamā they were kānū inventing yaftarūna
Then why did those they took besides Allāh as deities by which to approach [Him]1 not aid them? But they had strayed [i.e., departed] from them. And that was their falsehood and what they were inventing.
وَإِذْ And when wa-idh We directed ṣarafnā to you ilayka a party nafaran of mina the jinn l-jini listening yastamiʿūna (to) the Quran l-qur'āna And when falammā they attended it ḥaḍarūhu they said qālū Listen quietly anṣitū And when falammā it was concluded quḍiya they turned back wallaw to ilā their people qawmihim (as) warners mundhirīna
And [mention, O Muḥammad], when We directed to you a few of the jinn, listening to the Qur’ān. And when they attended it, they said, "Listen attentively." And when it was concluded, they went back to their people as warners.
قَالُوا۟ They said qālū O our people yāqawmanā Indeed, we innā [we] have heard samiʿ'nā a Book kitāban revealed unzila after min after baʿdi Musa mūsā confirming muṣaddiqan what limā (was) before it bayna (was) before it yadayhi guiding yahdī to ilā the truth l-ḥaqi and to wa-ilā a Path ṭarīqin Straight mus'taqīmin
They said, "O our people, indeed we have heard a [recited] Book revealed after Moses confirming what was before it which guides to the truth and to a straight path.
يَـٰقَوْمَنَآ O our people yāqawmanā Respond ajībū (to the) caller dāʿiya (of) Allah l-lahi and believe waāminū in him bihi He will forgive yaghfir for you lakum of min your sins dhunūbikum and will protect you wayujir'kum from min a punishment ʿadhābin painful alīmin
O our people, respond to the Caller [i.e., Messenger] of Allāh1 and believe in him; He [i.e., Allāh] will forgive for you your sins and protect you from a painful punishment.
وَمَن And whoever waman (does) not lā respond yujib (to the) caller dāʿiya (of) Allah l-lahi then not falaysa he can escape bimuʿ'jizin in fī the earth l-arḍi and not walaysa for him lahu besides Him min besides Him dūnihi protectors awliyāu Those ulāika (are) in fī error ḍalālin clear mubīnin
But he who does not respond to the Caller of Allāh will not cause failure [to Him] upon earth, and he will not have besides Him any protectors. Those are in manifest error."
أَوَلَمْ Do not awalam they see yaraw that anna Allah l-laha (is) the One Who alladhī created khalaqa the heavens l-samāwāti and the earth wal-arḍa and (was) not walam tired yaʿya by their creation bikhalqihinna (is) able biqādirin to give life ʿalā to give life an to give life yuḥ'yiya (to) the dead l-mawtā Yes balā indeed He innahu (is) on ʿalā every kulli thing shayin All-Powerful qadīrun
Do they not see that Allāh, who created the heavens and earth and did not fail in their creation, is able to give life to the dead? Yes. Indeed, He is over all things competent.
وَيَوْمَ And (the) Day wayawma are exposed yuʿ'raḍu those who alladhīna disbelieved kafarū to ʿalā the Fire l-nāri Is not alaysa this hādhā the truth bil-ḥaqi They will say qālū Yes balā by our Lord warabbinā He will say qāla Then taste fadhūqū the punishment l-ʿadhāba because bimā you used to kuntum disbelieve takfurūna
And the Day those who disbelieved are exposed to the Fire [it will be said], "Is this not the truth?" They will say, "Yes, by our Lord." He will say, "Then taste the punishment for what you used to deny."1
فَٱصْبِرْ So be patient fa-iṣ'bir as kamā had patience ṣabara those of determination ulū those of determination l-ʿazmi of mina the Messengers l-rusuli and (do) not walā seek to hasten tastaʿjil for them lahum As if they had ka-annahum (the) Day yawma they see yarawna what mā they were promised yūʿadūna not lam remained yalbathū except illā an hour sāʿatan of min a day nahārin A notification balāghun But will fahal (any) be destroyed yuh'laku except illā the people l-qawmu the defiantly disobedient l-fāsiqūna
So be patient, [O Muḥammad], as were those of determination among the messengers and do not be impatient for them.1 It will be - on the Day they see that which they are promised - as though they had not remained [in the world] except an hour of a day. [This is] notification. And will [any] be destroyed except the defiantly disobedient people?
