The Smoke

الدخان
إِنَّآ Indeed, We innā revealed it anzalnāhu in fī a Night laylatin Blessed mubārakatin Indeed, We innā [We] are kunnā (ever) warning mundhirīna
Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night.1 Indeed, We were to warn [mankind].
فِيهَا Therein fīhā is made distinct yuf'raqu every kullu affair amrin wise ḥakīmin
Therein [i.e., on that night] is made distinct1 every precise matter -
أَمْرًۭا A command amran from min Us ʿindinā Indeed, We innā [We] are kunnā (ever) sending mur'silīna
[Every] matter [proceeding] from Us. Indeed, We were to send [a messenger]
رَحْمَةًۭ As Mercy raḥmatan from min your Lord rabbika Indeed, He innahu [He] huwa (is) the All-Hearer l-samīʿu the All-Knower l-ʿalīmu
As mercy from your Lord. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing,
رَبِّ Lord rabbi (of) the heavens l-samāwāti and the earth wal-arḍi and whatever wamā (is) between both of them baynahumā if in you are kuntum certain mūqinīna
Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them, if you would be certain.
لَآ (There is) no lā god ilāha except illā Him huwa He gives life yuḥ'yī and causes death wayumītu your Lord rabbukum and (the) Lord warabbu (of) your fathers ābāikumu the former l-awalīna
There is no deity except Him; He gives life and causes death. [He is] your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers.
بَلْ Nay bal they hum (are) in fī doubt shakkin playing yalʿabūna
But they are in doubt, amusing themselves.
فَٱرْتَقِبْ Then watch fa-ir'taqib (for the) Day yawma (when) will bring tatī the sky l-samāu smoke bidukhānin visible mubīnin
Then watch for the Day when the sky will bring a visible smoke
يَغْشَى Enveloping yaghshā the people l-nāsa This hādhā (will be) a punishment ʿadhābun painful alīmun
Covering the people; this is a painful torment.
رَّبَّنَا Our Lord rabbanā Remove ik'shif from us ʿannā the punishment l-ʿadhāba indeed, we innā (are) believers mu'minūna
[They will say], "Our Lord, remove from us the torment; indeed, we are believers."
أَنَّىٰ How can annā (there be) for them lahumu the reminder l-dhik'rā when verily waqad had come to them jāahum a Messenger rasūlun clear mubīnun
How will there be for them a reminder [at that time]? And there had come to them a clear Messenger.
ثُمَّ Then thumma they turned away tawallaw from him ʿanhu and said waqālū One taught muʿallamun a mad man majnūnun
Then they turned away from him and said, "[He was] taught [and is] a madman."
إِنَّا Indeed, We innā (will) remove kāshifū the punishment l-ʿadhābi a little qalīlan indeed, you innakum (will) return ʿāidūna
Indeed, We will remove the torment for a little. Indeed, you [disbelievers] will return [to disbelief].
يَوْمَ (The) Day yawma We will seize nabṭishu (with) the seizure l-baṭshata the greatest l-kub'rā indeed, We innā (will) take retribution muntaqimūna
The Day We will strike with the greatest assault, indeed, We will take retribution.
۞ وَلَقَدْ And certainly walaqad We tried fatannā before them qablahum (the) people qawma (of) Firaun fir'ʿawna and came to them wajāahum a Messenger rasūlun noble karīmun
And We had already tried before them the people of Pharaoh, and there came to them a noble messenger [i.e., Moses],
أَنْ That an Deliver addū to me ilayya (the) servants ʿibāda (of) Allah l-lahi Indeed, I am innī to you lakum a Messenger rasūlun trustworthy amīnun
[Saying], "Render to me the servants of Allāh.1 Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger,"
وَأَن And that wa-an (do) not lā exalt yourselves taʿlū against ʿalā Allah l-lahi Indeed, I innī [I] have come to you ātīkum with an authority bisul'ṭānin clear mubīnin
And [saying], "Be not haughty with Allāh. Indeed, I have come to you with clear evidence.
وَإِنِّى And indeed, I wa-innī [I] seek refuge ʿudh'tu with my Lord birabbī and your Lord warabbikum lest an you stone me tarjumūni
And indeed, I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me.1
وَإِن And if wa-in not lam you believe tu'minū me lī then leave me alone fa-iʿ'tazilūni
But if you do not believe me, then leave me alone."
فَدَعَا So he called fadaʿā his Lord rabbahu That anna these hāulāi (are) a people qawmun criminals muj'rimūna
And [finally] he called to his Lord that these were a criminal people.
فَأَسْرِ Then "Set out fa-asri with My slaves biʿibādī (by) night laylan Indeed, you innakum (will be) followed muttabaʿūna
[Allāh said], "Then set out with My servants by night. Indeed, you are to be pursued.
وَٱتْرُكِ And leave wa-ut'ruki the sea l-baḥra at rest rahwan Indeed, they innahum (are) an army jundun (to be) drowned mugh'raqūna
And leave the sea in stillness.1 Indeed, they are an army to be drowned."
كَمْ How many kam (did) they leave tarakū of min gardens jannātin and springs waʿuyūnin
How much they left behind of gardens and springs
وَزُرُوعٍۢ And cornfields wazurūʿin and places wamaqāmin noble karīmin
And crops and noble sites
وَنَعْمَةٍۢ And pleasant things wanaʿmatin they used to kānū therein fīhā take delight fākihīna
And comfort wherein they were amused.
كَذَٰلِكَ ۖ Thus kadhālika And We made it (an) inherit(ance) wa-awrathnāhā (for) a people qawman another ākharīna
Thus. And We caused to inherit it another people.
فَمَا And not famā wept bakat for them ʿalayhimu the heaven l-samāu and the earth wal-arḍu and not wamā they were kānū given respite munẓarīna
And the heaven and earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved.
وَلَقَدْ And certainly walaqad We saved najjaynā (the) Children of Israel banī (the) Children of Israel is'rāīla from mina the punishment l-ʿadhābi the humiliating l-muhīni
And We certainly saved the Children of Israel from the humiliating torment -
مِن From min Firaun fir'ʿawna Indeed, he innahu was kāna arrogant ʿāliyan among mina the transgressors l-mus'rifīna
From Pharaoh. Indeed, he was a haughty one among the transgressors.
وَلَقَدِ And certainly walaqadi We chose them ikh'tarnāhum by ʿalā knowledge ʿil'min over ʿalā the worlds l-ʿālamīna
And We certainly chose them by knowledge over [all] the worlds.
وَءَاتَيْنَـٰهُم And We gave them waātaynāhum of mina the Signs l-āyāti that mā in it fīhi (was) a trial balāon clear mubīnun
And We gave them of signs that in which there was a clear trial.
إِنَّ Indeed inna these hāulāi surely, they say layaqūlūna
Indeed, these [disbelievers] are saying,
إِنْ Not in it hiya (is) but illā our death mawtatunā the first l-ūlā and not wamā we naḥnu (will be) raised again bimunsharīna
"There is not but our first death, and we will not be resurrected.
فَأْتُوا۟ Then bring fatū our forefathers biābāinā if in you are kuntum truthful ṣādiqīna
Then bring [back] our forefathers, if you should be truthful."
أَهُمْ Are they ahum better khayrun or am (the) people qawmu (of) Tubba tubbaʿin and those wa-alladhīna before them min before them qablihim We destroyed them ahlaknāhum indeed, they innahum were kānū criminals muj'rimīna
Are they better or the people of Tubbaʿ1 and those before them? We destroyed them, [for] indeed, they were criminals.
وَمَا And not wamā We created khalaqnā the heavens l-samāwāti and the earth wal-arḍa and whatever wamā (is) between them baynahumā (in) play lāʿibīna
And We did not create the heavens and earth and that between them in play.
مَا Not mā We created both of them khalaqnāhumā but illā in [the] truth bil-ḥaqi but walākinna most of them aktharahum (do) not lā know yaʿlamūna
We did not create them except in truth, but most of them do not know.
إِنَّ Indeed inna (the) Day of Judgment yawma (the) Day of Judgment l-faṣli (is) an appointed term for them mīqātuhum all ajmaʿīna
Indeed, the Day of Judgement is the appointed time for them all -
يَوْمَ (The) Day yawma not lā will avail yugh'nī a relation mawlan for ʿan a relation mawlan anything shayan and not walā they hum will be helped yunṣarūna
The Day when no relation1 will avail a relation at all, nor will they be helped -
إِلَّا Except illā (on) whom man Allah has mercy raḥima Allah has mercy l-lahu Indeed, He innahu [He] huwa (is) the All-Mighty l-ʿazīzu the Most Merciful l-raḥīmu
Except those [believers] on whom Allāh has mercy. Indeed, He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.
إِنَّ Indeed inna (the) tree shajarata (of) Zaqqum l-zaqūmi
Indeed, the tree of zaqqūm
طَعَامُ (Will be) food ṭaʿāmu (of) the sinner(s) l-athīmi
Is food for the sinful.
كَٱلْمُهْلِ Like the murky oil kal-muh'li it will boil yaghlī in fī the bellies l-buṭūni
Like murky oil, it boils within bellies
كَغَلْىِ Like boiling kaghalyi (of) scalding water l-ḥamīmi
Like the boiling of scalding water.
خُذُوهُ Seize him khudhūhu and drag him fa-iʿ'tilūhu into ilā (the) midst sawāi (of) the Hellfire l-jaḥīmi
[It will be commanded], "Seize him and drag him into the midst of the Hellfire,
ثُمَّ Then thumma pour ṣubbū over fawqa his head rasihi of min (the) punishment ʿadhābi (of) the scalding water l-ḥamīmi
Then pour over his head from the torment of scalding water."
ذُقْ Taste dhuq Indeed, you innaka [you] (were) anta the mighty l-ʿazīzu the noble l-karīmu
[It will be said], "Taste! Indeed, you are the honored, the noble!1
إِنَّ Indeed inna this hādhā (is) what mā you used to kuntum [about it] bihi doubt tamtarūna
Indeed, this is what you used to dispute."
إِنَّ Indeed inna the righteous l-mutaqīna (will be) in fī a place maqāmin secure amīnin
Indeed, the righteous will be in a secure place:
فِى In fī gardens jannātin and springs waʿuyūnin
Within gardens and springs,
يَلْبَسُونَ Wearing garments yalbasūna of min fine silk sundusin and heavy silk wa-is'tabraqin facing each other mutaqābilīna
Wearing [garments of] fine silk and brocade, facing each other.
كَذَٰلِكَ Thus kadhālika And We will marry them wazawwajnāhum (to) companions with beautiful eyes biḥūrin (to) companions with beautiful eyes ʿīnin
Thus. And We will marry them to fair women with large, [beautiful] eyes.
يَدْعُونَ They will call yadʿūna therein fīhā for every (kind) bikulli (of) fruit fākihatin secure āminīna
They will call therein for every [kind of] fruit - safe and secure.
لَا Not lā they will taste yadhūqūna therein fīhā the death l-mawta except illā the death l-mawtata the first l-ūlā And He will protect them wawaqāhum (from the) punishment ʿadhāba (of) the Hellfire l-jaḥīmi
They will not taste death therein except the first death, and He will have protected them from the punishment of Hellfire
فَضْلًۭا A Bounty faḍlan from min your Lord rabbika That dhālika it huwa (will be) the success l-fawzu the great l-ʿaẓīmu
As bounty from your Lord. That is what is the great attainment.
فَإِنَّمَا Indeed fa-innamā We have made it easy yassarnāhu in your tongue bilisānika so that they may laʿallahum take heed yatadhakkarūna
And indeed, We have eased it [i.e., the Qur’ān] in your tongue that they might be reminded.
فَٱرْتَقِبْ So watch fa-ir'taqib indeed, they innahum (too are) watching mur'taqibūna
So watch, [O Muḥammad]; indeed, they are watching [for your end].
