١

Ḥā, Meem.1

— Saheeh International

وَٱلْكِتَـٰبِ

By the Book

wal-kitābi

ٱلْمُبِينِ

the clear

l-mubīni

٢

By the clear Book,

— Saheeh International

إِنَّآ

Indeed, We

innā

أَنزَلْنَـٰهُ

revealed it

anzalnāhu

فِى

in

لَيْلَةٍۢ

a Night

laylatin

مُّبَـٰرَكَةٍ ۚ

Blessed

mubārakatin

إِنَّا

Indeed, We

innā

كُنَّا

[We] are

kunnā

مُنذِرِينَ

(ever) warning

mundhirīna

٣

Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night.1 Indeed, We were to warn [mankind].

— Saheeh International

فِيهَا

Therein

fīhā

يُفْرَقُ

is made distinct

yuf'raqu

كُلُّ

every

kullu

أَمْرٍ

affair

amrin

حَكِيمٍ

wise

ḥakīmin

٤

Therein [i.e., on that night] is made distinct1 every precise matter -

— Saheeh International

أَمْرًۭا

A command

amran

مِّنْ

from

min

عِندِنَآ ۚ

Us

ʿindinā

إِنَّا

Indeed, We

innā

كُنَّا

[We] are

kunnā

مُرْسِلِينَ

(ever) sending

mur'silīna

٥

[Every] matter [proceeding] from Us. Indeed, We were to send [a messenger]

— Saheeh International

رَحْمَةًۭ

As Mercy

raḥmatan

مِّن

from

min

رَّبِّكَ ۚ

your Lord

rabbika

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed, He

innahu

هُوَ

[He]

huwa

ٱلسَّمِيعُ

(is) the All-Hearer

l-samīʿu

ٱلْعَلِيمُ

the All-Knower

l-ʿalīmu

٦

As mercy from your Lord. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing,

— Saheeh International

رَبِّ

Lord

rabbi

ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ

(of) the heavens

l-samāwāti

وَٱلْأَرْضِ

and the earth

wal-arḍi

وَمَا

and whatever

wamā

بَيْنَهُمَآ ۖ

(is) between both of them

baynahumā

إِن

if

in

كُنتُم

you are

kuntum

مُّوقِنِينَ

certain

mūqinīna

٧

Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them, if you would be certain.

— Saheeh International

لَآ

(There is) no

إِلَـٰهَ

god

ilāha

إِلَّا

except

illā

هُوَ

Him

huwa

يُحْىِۦ

He gives life

yuḥ'yī

وَيُمِيتُ ۖ

and causes death

wayumītu

رَبُّكُمْ

your Lord

rabbukum

وَرَبُّ

and (the) Lord

warabbu

ءَابَآئِكُمُ

(of) your fathers

ābāikumu

ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ

the former

l-awalīna

٨

There is no deity except Him; He gives life and causes death. [He is] your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers.

— Saheeh International

بَلْ

Nay

bal

هُمْ

they

hum

فِى

(are) in

شَكٍّۢ

doubt

shakkin

يَلْعَبُونَ

playing

yalʿabūna

٩

But they are in doubt, amusing themselves.

— Saheeh International

فَٱرْتَقِبْ

Then watch

fa-ir'taqib

يَوْمَ

(for the) Day

yawma

تَأْتِى

(when) will bring

tatī

ٱلسَّمَآءُ

the sky

l-samāu

بِدُخَانٍۢ

smoke

bidukhānin

مُّبِينٍۢ

visible

mubīnin

١٠

Then watch for the Day when the sky will bring a visible smoke

— Saheeh International

يَغْشَى

Enveloping

yaghshā

ٱلنَّاسَ ۖ

the people

l-nāsa

هَـٰذَا

This

hādhā

عَذَابٌ

(will be) a punishment

ʿadhābun

أَلِيمٌۭ

painful

alīmun

١١

Covering the people; this is a painful torment.

— Saheeh International

رَّبَّنَا

Our Lord

rabbanā

ٱكْشِفْ

Remove

ik'shif

عَنَّا

from us

ʿannā

ٱلْعَذَابَ

the punishment

l-ʿadhāba

إِنَّا

indeed, we

innā

مُؤْمِنُونَ

(are) believers

mu'minūna

١٢

[They will say], "Our Lord, remove from us the torment; indeed, we are believers."

— Saheeh International

أَنَّىٰ

How can

annā

لَهُمُ

(there be) for them

lahumu

ٱلذِّكْرَىٰ

the reminder

l-dhik'rā

وَقَدْ

when verily

waqad

جَآءَهُمْ

had come to them

jāahum

رَسُولٌۭ

a Messenger

rasūlun

مُّبِينٌۭ

clear

mubīnun

١٣

How will there be for them a reminder [at that time]? And there had come to them a clear Messenger.

— Saheeh International

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

تَوَلَّوْا۟

they turned away

tawallaw

عَنْهُ

from him

ʿanhu

وَقَالُوا۟

and said

waqālū

مُعَلَّمٌۭ

One taught

muʿallamun

مَّجْنُونٌ

a mad man

majnūnun

١٤

Then they turned away from him and said, "[He was] taught [and is] a madman."

— Saheeh International

إِنَّا

Indeed, We

innā

كَاشِفُوا۟

(will) remove

kāshifū

ٱلْعَذَابِ

the punishment

l-ʿadhābi

قَلِيلًا ۚ

a little

qalīlan

إِنَّكُمْ

indeed, you

innakum

عَآئِدُونَ

(will) return

ʿāidūna

١٥

Indeed, We will remove the torment for a little. Indeed, you [disbelievers] will return [to disbelief].

— Saheeh International

يَوْمَ

(The) Day

yawma

نَبْطِشُ

We will seize

nabṭishu

ٱلْبَطْشَةَ

(with) the seizure

l-baṭshata

ٱلْكُبْرَىٰٓ

the greatest

l-kub'rā

إِنَّا

indeed, We

innā

مُنتَقِمُونَ

(will) take retribution

muntaqimūna

١٦

The Day We will strike with the greatest assault, indeed, We will take retribution.

— Saheeh International

۞ وَلَقَدْ

And certainly

walaqad

فَتَنَّا

We tried

fatannā

قَبْلَهُمْ

before them

qablahum

قَوْمَ

(the) people

qawma

فِرْعَوْنَ

(of) Firaun

fir'ʿawna

وَجَآءَهُمْ

and came to them

wajāahum

رَسُولٌۭ

a Messenger

rasūlun

كَرِيمٌ

noble

karīmun

١٧

And We had already tried before them the people of Pharaoh, and there came to them a noble messenger [i.e., Moses],

— Saheeh International

أَنْ

That

an

أَدُّوٓا۟

Deliver

addū

إِلَىَّ

to me

ilayya

عِبَادَ

(the) servants

ʿibāda

ٱللَّهِ ۖ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

إِنِّى

Indeed, I am

innī

لَكُمْ

to you

lakum

رَسُولٌ

a Messenger

rasūlun

أَمِينٌۭ

trustworthy

amīnun

١٨

[Saying], "Render to me the servants of Allāh.1 Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger,"

— Saheeh International

وَأَن

And that

wa-an

لَّا

(do) not

تَعْلُوا۟

exalt yourselves

taʿlū

عَلَى

against

ʿalā

ٱللَّهِ ۖ

Allah

l-lahi

إِنِّىٓ

Indeed, I

innī

ءَاتِيكُم

[I] have come to you

ātīkum

بِسُلْطَـٰنٍۢ

with an authority

bisul'ṭānin

مُّبِينٍۢ

clear

mubīnin

١٩

And [saying], "Be not haughty with Allāh. Indeed, I have come to you with clear evidence.

— Saheeh International

وَإِنِّى

And indeed, I

wa-innī

عُذْتُ

[I] seek refuge

ʿudh'tu

بِرَبِّى

with my Lord

birabbī

وَرَبِّكُمْ

and your Lord

warabbikum

أَن

lest

an

تَرْجُمُونِ

you stone me

tarjumūni

٢٠

And indeed, I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me.1

— Saheeh International

وَإِن

And if

wa-in

لَّمْ

not

lam

تُؤْمِنُوا۟

you believe

tu'minū

لِى

me

فَٱعْتَزِلُونِ

then leave me alone

fa-iʿ'tazilūni

٢١

But if you do not believe me, then leave me alone."

— Saheeh International

فَدَعَا

So he called

fadaʿā

رَبَّهُۥٓ

his Lord

rabbahu

أَنَّ

That

anna

هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ

these

hāulāi

قَوْمٌۭ

(are) a people

qawmun

مُّجْرِمُونَ

criminals

muj'rimūna

٢٢

And [finally] he called to his Lord that these were a criminal people.

— Saheeh International

فَأَسْرِ

Then "Set out

fa-asri

بِعِبَادِى

with My slaves

biʿibādī

لَيْلًا

(by) night

laylan

إِنَّكُم

Indeed, you

innakum

مُّتَّبَعُونَ

(will be) followed

muttabaʿūna

٢٣

[Allāh said], "Then set out with My servants by night. Indeed, you are to be pursued.

— Saheeh International

وَٱتْرُكِ

And leave

wa-ut'ruki

ٱلْبَحْرَ

the sea

l-baḥra

رَهْوًا ۖ

at rest

rahwan

إِنَّهُمْ

Indeed, they

innahum

جُندٌۭ

(are) an army

jundun

مُّغْرَقُونَ

(to be) drowned

mugh'raqūna

٢٤

And leave the sea in stillness.1 Indeed, they are an army to be drowned."

— Saheeh International

كَمْ

How many

kam

تَرَكُوا۟

(did) they leave

tarakū

مِن

of

min

جَنَّـٰتٍۢ

gardens

jannātin

وَعُيُونٍۢ

and springs

waʿuyūnin

٢٥

How much they left behind of gardens and springs

— Saheeh International

وَزُرُوعٍۢ

And cornfields

wazurūʿin

وَمَقَامٍۢ

and places

wamaqāmin

كَرِيمٍۢ

noble

karīmin

٢٦

And crops and noble sites

— Saheeh International

وَنَعْمَةٍۢ

And pleasant things

wanaʿmatin

كَانُوا۟

they used to

kānū

فِيهَا

therein

fīhā

فَـٰكِهِينَ

take delight

fākihīna

٢٧

And comfort wherein they were amused.

— Saheeh International

كَذَٰلِكَ ۖ

Thus

kadhālika

وَأَوْرَثْنَـٰهَا

And We made it (an) inherit(ance)

wa-awrathnāhā

قَوْمًا

(for) a people

qawman

ءَاخَرِينَ

another

ākharīna

٢٨

Thus. And We caused to inherit it another people.

— Saheeh International

فَمَا

And not

famā

بَكَتْ

wept

bakat

عَلَيْهِمُ

for them

ʿalayhimu

ٱلسَّمَآءُ

the heaven

l-samāu

وَٱلْأَرْضُ

and the earth

wal-arḍu

وَمَا

and not

wamā

كَانُوا۟

they were

kānū

مُنظَرِينَ

given respite

munẓarīna

٢٩

And the heaven and earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved.

— Saheeh International

وَلَقَدْ

And certainly

walaqad

نَجَّيْنَا

We saved

najjaynā

بَنِىٓ

(the) Children of Israel

banī

إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ

(the) Children of Israel

is'rāīla

مِنَ

from

mina

ٱلْعَذَابِ

the punishment

l-ʿadhābi

ٱلْمُهِينِ

the humiliating

l-muhīni

٣٠

And We certainly saved the Children of Israel from the humiliating torment -

— Saheeh International

مِن

From

min

فِرْعَوْنَ ۚ

Firaun

fir'ʿawna

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed, he

innahu

كَانَ

was

kāna

عَالِيًۭا

arrogant

ʿāliyan

مِّنَ

among

mina

ٱلْمُسْرِفِينَ

the transgressors

l-mus'rifīna

٣١

From Pharaoh. Indeed, he was a haughty one among the transgressors.

— Saheeh International

وَلَقَدِ

And certainly

walaqadi

ٱخْتَرْنَـٰهُمْ

We chose them

ikh'tarnāhum

عَلَىٰ

by

ʿalā

عِلْمٍ

knowledge

ʿil'min

عَلَى

over

ʿalā

ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

the worlds

l-ʿālamīna

٣٢

And We certainly chose them by knowledge over [all] the worlds.

— Saheeh International

وَءَاتَيْنَـٰهُم

And We gave them

waātaynāhum

مِّنَ

of

mina

ٱلْـَٔايَـٰتِ

the Signs

l-āyāti

مَا

that

فِيهِ

in it

fīhi

بَلَـٰٓؤٌۭا۟

(was) a trial

balāon

مُّبِينٌ

clear

mubīnun

٣٣

And We gave them of signs that in which there was a clear trial.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ

these

hāulāi

لَيَقُولُونَ

surely, they say

layaqūlūna

٣٤

Indeed, these [disbelievers] are saying,

— Saheeh International

إِنْ

Not

in

هِىَ

it

hiya

إِلَّا

(is) but

illā

مَوْتَتُنَا

our death

mawtatunā

ٱلْأُولَىٰ

the first

l-ūlā

وَمَا

and not

wamā

نَحْنُ

we

naḥnu

بِمُنشَرِينَ

(will be) raised again

bimunsharīna

٣٥

"There is not but our first death, and we will not be resurrected.

— Saheeh International

فَأْتُوا۟

Then bring

fatū

بِـَٔابَآئِنَآ

our forefathers

biābāinā

إِن

if

in

كُنتُمْ

you are

kuntum

صَـٰدِقِينَ

truthful

ṣādiqīna

٣٦

Then bring [back] our forefathers, if you should be truthful."

— Saheeh International

أَهُمْ

Are they

ahum

خَيْرٌ

better

khayrun

أَمْ

or

am

قَوْمُ

(the) people

qawmu

تُبَّعٍۢ

(of) Tubba

tubbaʿin

وَٱلَّذِينَ

and those

wa-alladhīna

مِن

before them

min

قَبْلِهِمْ ۚ

before them

qablihim

أَهْلَكْنَـٰهُمْ ۖ

We destroyed them

ahlaknāhum

إِنَّهُمْ

indeed, they

innahum

كَانُوا۟

were

kānū

مُجْرِمِينَ

criminals

muj'rimīna

٣٧

Are they better or the people of Tubbaʿ1 and those before them? We destroyed them, [for] indeed, they were criminals.

— Saheeh International

وَمَا

And not

wamā

خَلَقْنَا

We created

khalaqnā

ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ

the heavens

l-samāwāti

وَٱلْأَرْضَ

and the earth

wal-arḍa

وَمَا

and whatever

wamā

بَيْنَهُمَا

(is) between them

baynahumā

لَـٰعِبِينَ

(in) play

lāʿibīna

٣٨

And We did not create the heavens and earth and that between them in play.

— Saheeh International

مَا

Not

خَلَقْنَـٰهُمَآ

We created both of them

khalaqnāhumā

إِلَّا

but

illā

بِٱلْحَقِّ

in [the] truth

bil-ḥaqi

وَلَـٰكِنَّ

but

walākinna

أَكْثَرَهُمْ

most of them

aktharahum

لَا

(do) not

يَعْلَمُونَ

know

yaʿlamūna

٣٩

We did not create them except in truth, but most of them do not know.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

يَوْمَ

(the) Day of Judgment

yawma

ٱلْفَصْلِ

(the) Day of Judgment

l-faṣli

مِيقَـٰتُهُمْ

(is) an appointed term for them

mīqātuhum

أَجْمَعِينَ

all

ajmaʿīna

٤٠

Indeed, the Day of Judgement is the appointed time for them all -

— Saheeh International

يَوْمَ

(The) Day

yawma

لَا

not

يُغْنِى

will avail

yugh'nī

مَوْلًى

a relation

mawlan

عَن

for

ʿan

مَّوْلًۭى

a relation

mawlan

شَيْـًۭٔا

anything

shayan

وَلَا

and not

walā

هُمْ

they

hum

يُنصَرُونَ

will be helped

yunṣarūna

٤١

The Day when no relation1 will avail a relation at all, nor will they be helped -

— Saheeh International

إِلَّا

Except

illā

مَن

(on) whom

man

رَّحِمَ

Allah has mercy

raḥima

ٱللَّهُ ۚ

Allah has mercy

l-lahu

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed, He

innahu

هُوَ

[He]

huwa

ٱلْعَزِيزُ

(is) the All-Mighty

l-ʿazīzu

ٱلرَّحِيمُ

the Most Merciful

l-raḥīmu

٤٢

Except those [believers] on whom Allāh has mercy. Indeed, He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

شَجَرَتَ

(the) tree

shajarata

ٱلزَّقُّومِ

(of) Zaqqum

l-zaqūmi

٤٣

Indeed, the tree of zaqqūm

— Saheeh International

طَعَامُ

(Will be) food

ṭaʿāmu

ٱلْأَثِيمِ

(of) the sinner(s)

l-athīmi

٤٤

Is food for the sinful.

— Saheeh International

كَٱلْمُهْلِ

Like the murky oil

kal-muh'li

يَغْلِى

it will boil

yaghlī

فِى

in

ٱلْبُطُونِ

the bellies

l-buṭūni

٤٥

Like murky oil, it boils within bellies

— Saheeh International

كَغَلْىِ

Like boiling

kaghalyi

ٱلْحَمِيمِ

(of) scalding water

l-ḥamīmi

٤٦

Like the boiling of scalding water.

— Saheeh International

خُذُوهُ

Seize him

khudhūhu

فَٱعْتِلُوهُ

and drag him

fa-iʿ'tilūhu

إِلَىٰ

into

ilā

سَوَآءِ

(the) midst

sawāi

ٱلْجَحِيمِ

(of) the Hellfire

l-jaḥīmi

٤٧

[It will be commanded], "Seize him and drag him into the midst of the Hellfire,

— Saheeh International

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

صُبُّوا۟

pour

ṣubbū

فَوْقَ

over

fawqa

رَأْسِهِۦ

his head

rasihi

مِنْ

of

min

عَذَابِ

(the) punishment

ʿadhābi

ٱلْحَمِيمِ

(of) the scalding water

l-ḥamīmi

٤٨

Then pour over his head from the torment of scalding water."

— Saheeh International

ذُقْ

Taste

dhuq

إِنَّكَ

Indeed, you

innaka

أَنتَ

[you] (were)

anta

ٱلْعَزِيزُ

the mighty

l-ʿazīzu

ٱلْكَرِيمُ

the noble

l-karīmu

٤٩

[It will be said], "Taste! Indeed, you are the honored, the noble!1

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

هَـٰذَا

this

hādhā

مَا

(is) what

كُنتُم

you used to

kuntum

بِهِۦ

[about it]

bihi

تَمْتَرُونَ

doubt

tamtarūna

٥٠

Indeed, this is what you used to dispute."

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ

the righteous

l-mutaqīna

فِى

(will be) in

مَقَامٍ

a place

maqāmin

أَمِينٍۢ

secure

amīnin

٥١

Indeed, the righteous will be in a secure place:

— Saheeh International

فِى

In

جَنَّـٰتٍۢ

gardens

jannātin

وَعُيُونٍۢ

and springs

waʿuyūnin

٥٢

Within gardens and springs,

— Saheeh International

يَلْبَسُونَ

Wearing garments

yalbasūna

مِن

of

min

سُندُسٍۢ

fine silk

sundusin

وَإِسْتَبْرَقٍۢ

and heavy silk

wa-is'tabraqin

مُّتَقَـٰبِلِينَ

facing each other

mutaqābilīna

٥٣

Wearing [garments of] fine silk and brocade, facing each other.

— Saheeh International

كَذَٰلِكَ

Thus

kadhālika

وَزَوَّجْنَـٰهُم

And We will marry them

wazawwajnāhum

بِحُورٍ

(to) companions with beautiful eyes

biḥūrin

عِينٍۢ

(to) companions with beautiful eyes

ʿīnin

٥٤

Thus. And We will marry them to fair women with large, [beautiful] eyes.

— Saheeh International

يَدْعُونَ

They will call

yadʿūna

فِيهَا

therein

fīhā

بِكُلِّ

for every (kind)

bikulli

فَـٰكِهَةٍ

(of) fruit

fākihatin

ءَامِنِينَ

secure

āminīna

٥٥

They will call therein for every [kind of] fruit - safe and secure.

— Saheeh International

لَا

Not

يَذُوقُونَ

they will taste

yadhūqūna

فِيهَا

therein

fīhā

ٱلْمَوْتَ

the death

l-mawta

إِلَّا

except

illā

ٱلْمَوْتَةَ

the death

l-mawtata

ٱلْأُولَىٰ ۖ

the first

l-ūlā

وَوَقَىٰهُمْ

And He will protect them

wawaqāhum

عَذَابَ

(from the) punishment

ʿadhāba

ٱلْجَحِيمِ

(of) the Hellfire

l-jaḥīmi

٥٦

They will not taste death therein except the first death, and He will have protected them from the punishment of Hellfire

— Saheeh International

فَضْلًۭا

A Bounty

faḍlan

مِّن

from

min

رَّبِّكَ ۚ

your Lord

rabbika

ذَٰلِكَ

That

dhālika

هُوَ

it

huwa

ٱلْفَوْزُ

(will be) the success

l-fawzu

ٱلْعَظِيمُ

the great

l-ʿaẓīmu

٥٧

As bounty from your Lord. That is what is the great attainment.

— Saheeh International

فَإِنَّمَا

Indeed

fa-innamā

يَسَّرْنَـٰهُ

We have made it easy

yassarnāhu

بِلِسَانِكَ

in your tongue

bilisānika

لَعَلَّهُمْ

so that they may

laʿallahum

يَتَذَكَّرُونَ

take heed

yatadhakkarūna

٥٨

And indeed, We have eased it [i.e., the Qur’ān] in your tongue that they might be reminded.

— Saheeh International

فَٱرْتَقِبْ

So watch

fa-ir'taqib

إِنَّهُم

indeed, they

innahum

مُّرْتَقِبُونَ

(too are) watching

mur'taqibūna

٥٩

So watch, [O Muḥammad]; indeed, they are watching [for your end].

— Saheeh International
