وَمَا And not wamā they became divided tafarraqū until illā after min after baʿdi [what] mā came to them jāahumu the knowledge l-ʿil'mu (out of) rivalry baghyan among them baynahum And if not walawlā (for) a word kalimatun (that) preceded sabaqat from min your Lord rabbika for ilā a term ajalin specified musamman surely, it (would have) been settled laquḍiya between them baynahum And indeed wa-inna those who alladhīna were made to inherit ūrithū the Book l-kitāba after them min after them baʿdihim (are) surely in lafī doubt shakkin concerning it min'hu disquieting murībin
And they did not become divided until after knowledge had come to them - out of jealous animosity between themselves. And if not for a word1 that preceded from your Lord [postponing the penalty] until a specified time, it would have been concluded between them. And indeed, those who were granted inheritance of the Scripture after them are, concerning it, in disquieting doubt.
