فَإِذَا So when fa-idhā touches massa [the] man l-insāna adversity ḍurrun he calls upon Us daʿānā then thumma when idhā We bestow (on) him khawwalnāhu a favor niʿ'matan from Us minnā he says qāla Only innamā I have been given it ūtītuhu for ʿalā knowledge ʿil'min Nay bal it hiya (is) a trial fit'natun but walākinna most of them aktharahum (do) not lā know yaʿlamūna
And when adversity touches man, he calls upon Us; then when We bestow on him a favor from Us, he says, "I have only been given it because of [my] knowledge." Rather, it is a trial, but most of them do not know.
قَدْ Indeed qad said it qālahā those alladhīna before them min before them qablihim but (did) not famā avail aghnā them ʿanhum what mā they used to kānū earn yaksibūna
Those before them had already said it, but they were not availed by what they used to earn.
فَأَصَابَهُمْ Then struck them fa-aṣābahum (the) evils sayyiātu (of) what mā they earned kasabū And those who wa-alladhīna have wronged ẓalamū of min these hāulāi will strike them sayuṣībuhum (the) evils sayyiātu (of) what mā they earned kasabū and not wamā they hum will be able to escape bimuʿ'jizīna
And the evil consequences of what they earned struck them. And those who have wronged of these [people] will be struck [i.e., afflicted] by the evil consequences of what they earned; and they will not cause failure.
أَوَلَمْ Do not awalam they know yaʿlamū that anna Allah l-laha extends yabsuṭu the provision l-riz'qa for whom liman He wills yashāu and restricts wayaqdiru Indeed inna in fī that dhālika surely (are) signs laāyātin for a people liqawmin who believe yu'minūna
Do they not know that Allāh extends provision for whom He wills and restricts [it]? Indeed in that are signs for a people who believe.
