And they say, "Our Lord, hasten for us our share [of the punishment] before the Day of Account."
ٱصْبِرْ Be patient iṣ'bir over ʿalā what mā they say yaqūlūna and remember wa-udh'kur Our slave ʿabdanā Dawood dāwūda the possessor of strength dhā the possessor of strength l-aydi Indeed, he (was) innahu repeatedly turning awwābun
Be patient over what they say and remember Our servant, David, the possessor of strength; indeed, he was one who repeatedly turned back [to Allāh].

Indeed, We subjected the mountains [to praise] with him, exalting [Allāh] in the [late] afternoon and [after] sunrise.

۞ وَهَلْ And has (there) wahal come to you atāka (the) news naba-u (of) the litigants l-khaṣmi when idh they climbed over the wall tasawwarū (of) the chamber l-miḥ'rāba
And has there come to you the news of the adversaries, when they climbed over the wall of [his] prayer chamber -
إِذْ When idh they entered dakhalū upon ʿalā Dawood dāwūda and he was afraid fafaziʿa of them min'hum they said qālū (Do) not lā fear takhaf (We are) two litigants khaṣmāni has wronged baghā one of us baʿḍunā to ʿalā another baʿḍin so judge fa-uḥ'kum between us baynanā in truth bil-ḥaqi and (do) not walā be unjust tush'ṭiṭ and guide us wa-ih'dinā to ilā an even sawāi [the] path l-ṣirāṭi
When they entered upon David and he was alarmed by them? They said, "Fear not. [We are] two adversaries, one of whom has wronged the other, so judge between us with truth and do not exceed [it] and guide us to the sound path.
إِنَّ Indeed inna this hādhā (is) my brother akhī he has lahu ninety-nine tis'ʿun ninety-nine watis'ʿūna ewe(s) naʿjatan while I have waliya ewe naʿjatun one wāḥidatun so he said faqāla Entrust her to me akfil'nīhā and he overpowered me waʿazzanī in fī [the] speech l-khiṭābi
Indeed this, my brother, has ninety-nine ewes, and I have one ewe; so he said, 'Entrust her to me,' and he overpowered me in speech."
قَالَ He said qāla Certainly laqad he has wronged you ẓalamaka by demanding bisuāli your ewe naʿjatika to ilā his ewes niʿājihi And indeed wa-inna many kathīran of mina the partners l-khulaṭāi certainly oppress layabghī some of them baʿḍuhum [on] ʿalā another baʿḍin except illā those who alladhīna believe āmanū and do waʿamilū righteous deeds l-ṣāliḥāti and few waqalīlun (are) they mā (are) they hum And became certain waẓanna Dawood dāwūdu that annamā We (had) tried him fatannāhu and he asked forgiveness fa-is'taghfara (of) his Lord rabbahu and fell down wakharra bowing rākiʿan and turned in repentance wa-anāba
[David] said, "He has certainly wronged you in demanding your ewe [in addition] to his ewes. And indeed, many associates oppress one another, except for those who believe and do righteous deeds - and few are they." And David became certain that We had tried him, and he asked forgiveness of his Lord1 and fell down bowing [in prostration] and turned in repentance [to Allāh].
فَغَفَرْنَا So We forgave faghafarnā for him lahu that dhālika And indeed wa-inna for him lahu with Us ʿindanā surely is a near access lazul'fā and a good waḥus'na place of return maābin

[We said], "O David, indeed We have made you a successor upon the earth, so judge between the people in truth and do not follow [your own] desire, as it will lead you astray from the way of Allāh." Indeed, those who go astray from the way of Allāh will have a severe punishment for having forgotten the Day of Account.
وَمَا And not wamā We created khalaqnā the heaven l-samāa and the earth wal-arḍa and whatever wamā (is) between them baynahumā without purpose bāṭilan That dhālika (is the) assumption ẓannu (of) those who alladhīna disbelieve kafarū So woe fawaylun to those lilladhīna who disbelieve kafarū from mina the Fire l-nāri
And We did not create the heaven and the earth and that between them aimlessly. That is the assumption of those who disbelieve, so woe to those who disbelieve from the Fire.
أَمْ Or am should We treat najʿalu those who alladhīna believe āmanū and do waʿamilū righteous deeds l-ṣāliḥāti like those who spread corruption kal-muf'sidīna in fī the earth l-arḍi Or am should We treat najʿalu the pious l-mutaqīna like the wicked kal-fujāri
Or should We treat those who believe and do righteous deeds like corrupters in the land? Or should We treat those who fear Allāh like the wicked?

He said, "My Lord, forgive me and grant me a kingdom such as will not belong to anyone after me. Indeed, You are the Bestower."

فَسَجَدَ So prostrated fasajada the Angels l-malāikatu all of them kulluhum together ajmaʿūna
So the angels prostrated - all of them entirely,
إِلَّآ Except illā Iblis ib'līsa he was arrogant is'takbara and became wakāna of mina the disbelievers l-kāfirīna
Except Iblees;1 he was arrogant and became among the disbelievers.

[Allāh] said, "O Iblees, what prevented you from prostrating to that which I created with My hands?1 Were you arrogant [then], or were you [already] among the haughty?"
قَالَ He said qāla I am anā better khayrun than him min'hu You created me khalaqtanī from min fire nārin and You created him wakhalaqtahu from min clay ṭīnin
He said, "I am better than him. You created me from fire and created him from clay."
قَالَ He said qāla Then get out fa-ukh'ruj of it min'hā for indeed, you fa-innaka (are) accursed rajīmun
[Allāh] said, "Then get out of it [i.e., Paradise], for indeed, you are expelled.
وَإِنَّ And indeed wa-inna upon you ʿalayka (is) My curse laʿnatī until ilā (the) Day yawmi (of) Judgment l-dīni

إِلَىٰ Until ilā (the) Day yawmi (of) the time l-waqti well-known l-maʿlūmi
Until the Day of the time well-known."
قَالَ He said qāla Then by Your might fabiʿizzatika I will surely mislead them la-ugh'wiyannahum all ajmaʿīna
[Iblees] said, "By Your might, I will surely mislead them all.
إِلَّا Except illā Your slaves ʿibādaka among them min'humu the chosen ones l-mukh'laṣīna
Except, among them, Your chosen servants."
قَالَ He said qāla Then (it is) the truth fal-ḥaqu and the truth wal-ḥaqa I say aqūlu
[Allāh] said, "The truth [is My oath], and the truth I say -
لَأَمْلَأَنَّ Surely I will fill la-amla-anna Hell jahannama with you minka and those who wamimman follow you tabiʿaka among them min'hum all ajmaʿīna
[That] I will surely fill Hell with you and those of them that follow you all together."
قُلْ Say qul Not mā I ask of you asalukum for it ʿalayhi any min payment ajrin and not wamā I am anā of mina the ones who pretend l-mutakalifīna
Say, [O Muḥammad], "I do not ask you for it [i.e., the Qur’ān] any payment, and I am not of the pretentious.
إِنْ Not in it (is) huwa except illā a Reminder dhik'run to the worlds lil'ʿālamīna
It is but a reminder to the worlds.
وَلَتَعْلَمُنَّ And surely you will know walataʿlamunna its information naba-ahu after baʿda a time ḥīnin
And you will surely know [the truth of] its information after a time."
