إِنَّكَ Indeed, you innaka (are) among lamina the Messengers l-mur'salīna
Indeed you, [O Muḥammad], are from among the messengers,
عَلَىٰ On ʿalā a Path ṣirāṭin Straight mus'taqīmin
On a straight path.
تَنزِيلَ A revelation tanzīla (of) the All-Mighty l-ʿazīzi the Most Merciful l-raḥīmi
[This is] a revelation of the Exalted in Might, the Merciful,
لِتُنذِرَ That you may warn litundhira a people qawman not mā were warned undhira their forefathers ābāuhum so they fahum (are) heedless ghāfilūna
That you may warn a people whose forefathers were not warned, so they are unaware.
لَقَدْ Certainly laqad (has) proved true ḥaqqa the word l-qawlu upon ʿalā most of them aktharihim so they fahum (do) not lā believe yu'minūna
Already the word [i.e., decree] has come into effect upon most of them, so they do not believe.
إِنَّا Indeed, We innā [We] have placed jaʿalnā on fī their necks aʿnāqihim iron collars aghlālan and they fahiya (are up) to ilā the chins l-adhqāni so they fahum (are with) heads raised up muq'maḥūna
Indeed, We have put shackles on their necks, and they are to their chins, so they are with heads [kept] aloft.
وَجَعَلْنَا And We have made wajaʿalnā from min before/between bayni their hands/their front aydīhim a barrier saddan and from wamin behind them khalfihim a barrier saddan and We covered them fa-aghshaynāhum so they fahum (do) not lā see yub'ṣirūna
And We have put before them a barrier and behind them a barrier and covered them, so they do not see.
وَسَوَآءٌ And it (is) same wasawāon to them ʿalayhim whether you warn them a-andhartahum or am (do) not lam warn them tundhir'hum not lā they will believe yu'minūna
And it is all the same for them whether you warn them or do not warn them - they will not believe.
إِنَّمَا Only innamā you (can) warn tundhiru (him) who mani follows ittabaʿa the Reminder l-dhik'ra and fears wakhashiya the Most Gracious l-raḥmāna in the unseen bil-ghaybi So give him glad tidings fabashir'hu of forgiveness bimaghfiratin and a reward wa-ajrin noble karīmin
You can only warn one who follows the message and fears the Most Merciful unseen. So give him good tidings of forgiveness and noble reward.
إِنَّا Indeed, We innā [We] naḥnu [We] give life nuḥ'yī (to) the dead l-mawtā and We record wanaktubu what mā they have sent before qaddamū and their footprints waāthārahum and every wakulla thing shayin We have enumerated it aḥṣaynāhu in fī a Register imāmin clear mubīnin
Indeed, it is We who bring the dead to life and record what they have put forth and what they left behind, and all things We have enumerated in a clear register.
وَٱضْرِبْ And set forth wa-iḍ'rib to them lahum an example mathalan (of the) companions aṣḥāba (of) the city l-qaryati when idh came to it jāahā the Messengers l-mur'salūna
And present to them an example: the people of the city, when the messengers came to it -
إِذْ When idh We sent arsalnā to them ilayhimu two (Messengers) ith'nayni but they denied both of them fakadhabūhumā so We strengthened them faʿazzaznā with a third bithālithin and they said faqālū Indeed, We innā to you ilaykum (are) Messengers mur'salūna
When We sent to them two but they denied them, so We strengthened [them] with a third, and they said, "Indeed, we are messengers to you."
قَالُوا۟ They said qālū Not mā you antum (are) but illā human beings basharun like us mith'lunā and not wamā has revealed anzala the Most Gracious l-raḥmānu any min thing shayin Not in you antum (are) but illā lying takdhibūna
They said, "You are not but human beings like us, and the Most Merciful has not revealed a thing. You are only telling lies."
قَالُوا۟ They said qālū Our Lord rabbunā knows yaʿlamu that we innā to you ilaykum (are) surely Messengers lamur'salūna
They said, "Our Lord knows that we are messengers to you,
وَمَا And not wamā (is) on us ʿalaynā except illā the conveyance l-balāghu clear l-mubīnu
And we are not responsible except for clear notification."
قَالُوٓا۟ They said qālū Indeed, we innā [we] see an evil omen taṭayyarnā from you bikum If la-in not lam you desist tantahū surely, we will stone you lanarjumannakum and surely will touch you walayamassannakum from us minnā a punishment ʿadhābun painful alīmun
They said, "Indeed, we consider you a bad omen. If you do not desist, we will surely stone you, and there will surely touch you, from us, a painful punishment."
قَالُوا۟ They said qālū Your evil omen ṭāirukum (be) with you maʿakum Is it because a-in you are admonished dhukkir'tum Nay bal you antum (are) a people qawmun transgressing mus'rifūna
They said, "Your omen [i.e., fate] is with yourselves. Is it1 because you were reminded? Rather, you are a transgressing people."
وَجَآءَ And came wajāa from min (the) farthest end aqṣā (of) the city l-madīnati a man rajulun running yasʿā He said qāla O my People yāqawmi Follow ittabiʿū the Messengers l-mur'salīna
And there came from the farthest end of the city a man, running. He said, "O my people, follow the messengers.
ٱتَّبِعُوا۟ Follow ittabiʿū (those) who man (do) not lā ask (of) you yasalukum any payment ajran and they wahum (are) rightly guided muh'tadūna
Follow those who do not ask of you [any] payment, and they are [rightly] guided.
وَمَا And what wamā (is) for me liya (that) not lā I worship aʿbudu the One Who alladhī created me faṭaranī and to Whom wa-ilayhi you will be returned tur'jaʿūna
And why should I not worship He who created me and to whom you will be returned?
ءَأَتَّخِذُ Should I take a-attakhidhu besides Him min besides Him dūnihi gods ālihatan If in intends for me yurid'ni the Most Gracious l-raḥmānu any harm biḍurrin not lā will avail tugh'ni [from] me ʿannī their intercession shafāʿatuhum (in) anything shayan and not walā they (can) save me yunqidhūni
Should I take other than Him [false] deities [while], if the Most Merciful intends for me some adversity, their intercession will not avail me at all, nor can they save me?
إِنِّىٓ Indeed, I innī then idhan surely would be in lafī an error ḍalālin clear mubīnin
Indeed, I would then be in manifest error.
إِنِّىٓ Indeed, I innī [I] have believed āmantu in your Lord birabbikum so listen to me fa-is'maʿūni
Indeed, I have believed in your Lord, so listen to me."
قِيلَ It was said qīla Enter ud'khuli Paradise l-janata He said qāla I wish yālayta my people qawmī knew yaʿlamūna
It was said, "Enter Paradise."1 He said, "I wish my people could know
بِمَا Of how bimā has forgiven ghafara me lī my Lord rabbī and placed me wajaʿalanī among mina the honored ones l-muk'ramīna
Of how my Lord has forgiven me and placed me among the honored."
۞ وَمَآ And not wamā We sent down anzalnā upon ʿalā his people qawmihi after him min after him baʿdihi any min host jundin from mina the heaven l-samāi and not wamā were We kunnā (to) send down munzilīna
And We did not send down upon his people after him any soldiers from the heaven, nor would We have done so.
إِن Not in it was kānat but illā a shout ṣayḥatan one wāḥidatan then behold fa-idhā They hum (were) extinguished khāmidūna
It was not but one shout,1 and immediately they were extinguished.
يَـٰحَسْرَةً Alas yāḥasratan for ʿalā the servants l-ʿibādi Not mā came to them yatīhim any min Messenger rasūlin but illā they did kānū mock at him bihi mock at him yastahziūna
How regretful for the servants. There did not come to them any messenger except that they used to ridicule him.
أَلَمْ Do not alam they see yaraw how many kam We destroyed ahlaknā before them qablahum of mina the generations l-qurūni That they annahum to them ilayhim will not return lā will not return yarjiʿūna
Have they not considered how many generations We destroyed before them - that they to them1 will not return?
وَإِن And surely wa-in all kullun then lammā together jamīʿun before Us ladaynā (will be) brought muḥ'ḍarūna
And indeed, all of them will yet be brought present before Us.
وَءَايَةٌۭ And a Sign waāyatun for them lahumu (is) the earth l-arḍu dead l-maytatu We give it life aḥyaynāhā and We bring forth wa-akhrajnā from it min'hā grain ḥabban and from it famin'hu they eat yakulūna
And a sign for them is the dead earth. We have brought it to life and brought forth from it grain, and from it they eat.
وَجَعَلْنَا And We placed wajaʿalnā therein fīhā gardens jannātin of min date-palms nakhīlin and grapevines wa-aʿnābin and We caused to gush forth wafajjarnā in it fīhā of mina the springs l-ʿuyūni
And We placed therein gardens of palm trees and grapevines and caused to burst forth therefrom some springs -
لِيَأْكُلُوا۟ That they may eat liyakulū of min its fruit thamarihi And not wamā made it ʿamilathu their hands aydīhim So will not afalā they be grateful yashkurūna
That they may eat of His fruit.1 And their hands have not produced it,2 so will they not be grateful?
سُبْحَـٰنَ Glory be sub'ḥāna (to) the One Who alladhī created khalaqa (in) pairs l-azwāja all kullahā of what mimmā grows tunbitu the earth l-arḍu and of wamin themselves anfusihim and of what wamimmā not lā they know yaʿlamūna
Exalted is He who created all pairs1 - from what the earth grows and from themselves and from that which they do not know.
وَءَايَةٌۭ And a Sign waāyatun for them lahumu (is) the night al-laylu We withdraw naslakhu from it min'hu the day l-nahāra Then behold fa-idhā They hum (are) those in darkness muẓ'limūna
And a sign for them is the night. We remove1 from it the [light of] day, so they are [left] in darkness.
وَٱلشَّمْسُ And the sun wal-shamsu runs tajrī to a term appointed limus'taqarrin for it lahā That dhālika (is the) Decree taqdīru (of) the All-Mighty l-ʿazīzi the All-Knowing l-ʿalīmi
And the sun runs [on course] toward its stopping point. That is the determination of the Exalted in Might, the Knowing.
وَٱلْقَمَرَ And the moon wal-qamara We have ordained for it qaddarnāhu phases manāzila until ḥattā it returns ʿāda like the date stalk kal-ʿur'jūni the old l-qadīmi
And the moon - We have determined for it phases, until it returns [appearing] like the old date stalk.
لَا Not lā the sun l-shamsu is permitted yanbaghī for it lahā that an it overtakes tud'rika the moon l-qamara and not walā the night al-laylu (can) outstrip sābiqu the day l-nahāri but all wakullun in fī an orbit falakin they are floating yasbaḥūna
It is not allowable [i.e., possible] for the sun to reach the moon, nor does the night overtake the day, but each, in an orbit, is swimming.
وَءَايَةٌۭ And a Sign waāyatun for them lahum (is) that annā We carried ḥamalnā their offspring dhurriyyatahum in fī the ship l-ful'ki laden l-mashḥūni
And a sign for them is that We carried their forefathers1 in a laden ship.
وَخَلَقْنَا And We created wakhalaqnā for them lahum from min (the) likes of it mith'lihi what mā they ride yarkabūna
And We created for them from the likes of it that which they ride.
وَإِن And if wa-in We will nasha We could drown them nugh'riq'hum then not falā (would be) a responder to a cry ṣarīkha for them lahum and not walā they hum would be saved yunqadhūna
And if We should will, We could drown them; then no one responding to a cry would there be for them, nor would they be saved
إِلَّا Except illā (by) Mercy raḥmatan from Us minnā and provision wamatāʿan for ilā a time ḥīnin
Except as a mercy from Us and provision for a time.
وَإِذَا And when wa-idhā it is said qīla to them lahumu Fear ittaqū what mā (is) before you bayna (is) before you aydīkum and what wamā (is) behind you khalfakum so that you may laʿallakum receive mercy tur'ḥamūna
But when it is said to them, "Beware of what is before you and what is behind you;1 perhaps you will receive mercy..."2
وَمَا And not wamā comes to them tatīhim of min a Sign āyatin from min (the) Signs āyāti (of) their Lord rabbihim but illā they kānū from it ʿanhā turn away muʿ'riḍīna
And no sign comes to them from the signs of their Lord except that they are from it turning away.
وَإِذَا And when wa-idhā it is said qīla to them lahum Spend anfiqū from what mimmā (has) provided you razaqakumu Allah l-lahu Said qāla those who alladhīna disbelieved kafarū to those who lilladhīna believed āmanū Should we feed anuṭ'ʿimu whom man if law Allah willed yashāu Allah willed l-lahu He would have fed him aṭʿamahu Not in (are) you antum except illā in fī an error ḍalālin clear mubīnin
And when it is said to them, "Spend from that which Allāh has provided for you," those who disbelieve say to those who believe, "Should we feed one whom, if Allāh had willed, He would have fed? You are not but in clear error."
وَيَقُولُونَ And they say wayaqūlūna When (is) matā this hādhā promise l-waʿdu if in you are kuntum truthful ṣādiqīna
And they say, "When is this promise, if you should be truthful?"
مَا Not mā they await yanẓurūna except illā a shout ṣayḥatan one wāḥidatan it will seize them takhudhuhum while they wahum are disputing yakhiṣṣimūna
They do not await except one blast1 which will seize them while they are disputing.
فَلَا Then not falā they will be able yastaṭīʿūna (to) make a will tawṣiyatan and not walā to ilā their people ahlihim they (can) return yarjiʿūna
And they will not be able [to give] any instruction, nor to their people can they return.
وَنُفِخَ And will be blown wanufikha [in] fī the trumpet l-ṣūri and behold fa-idhā They hum from mina the graves l-ajdāthi to ilā their Lord rabbihim [they] will hasten yansilūna
And the Horn will be blown;1 and at once from the graves to their Lord they will hasten.
قَالُوا۟ They [will] say qālū O woe to us yāwaylanā Who man has raised us baʿathanā from min our sleeping place marqadinā This (is) hādhā What mā (had) promised waʿada the Most Gracious l-raḥmānu and told (the) truth waṣadaqa the Messengers l-mur'salūna
They will say, "O woe to us! Who has raised us up from our sleeping place?" [The reply will be], "This is what the Most Merciful had promised, and the messengers told the truth."
إِن Not in it will be kānat but illā a shout ṣayḥatan single wāḥidatan so behold fa-idhā They hum all jamīʿun before Us ladaynā (will be) brought muḥ'ḍarūna
It will not be but one blast, and at once they are all brought present before Us.
فَٱلْيَوْمَ So this Day fal-yawma not lā will be wronged tuẓ'lamu a soul nafsun (in) anything shayan and not walā you will be recompensed tuj'zawna except illā (for) what mā you used (to) kuntum do taʿmalūna
So today [i.e., the Day of Judgement] no soul will be wronged at all, and you will not be recompensed except for what you used to do.
إِنَّ Indeed inna (the) companions aṣḥāba (of) Paradise l-janati this Day l-yawma [in] fī will be occupied shughulin (in) amusement fākihūna
Indeed the companions of Paradise, that Day, will be amused in [joyful] occupation -
هُمْ They hum and their spouses wa-azwājuhum in fī shades ẓilālin on ʿalā [the] couches l-arāiki reclining muttakiūna
They and their spouses - in shade, reclining on adorned couches.
لَهُمْ For them lahum therein fīhā (are) fruits fākihatun and for them walahum (is) whatever mā they call for yaddaʿūna
For them therein is fruit, and for them is whatever they request [or wish]
سَلَـٰمٌۭ Peace salāmun A word qawlan from min a Lord rabbin Most Merciful raḥīmin
[And] "Peace," a word from a Merciful Lord.
وَٱمْتَـٰزُوا۟ But stand apart wa-im'tāzū today l-yawma O criminals ayyuhā O criminals l-muj'rimūna
[Then He will say], "But stand apart today, you criminals.1
۞ أَلَمْ Did not alam I enjoin aʿhad upon you ilaykum O Children of Adam yābanī O Children of Adam ādama That an (do) not lā worship taʿbudū the Shaitaan l-shayṭāna indeed, he innahu (is) for you lakum an enemy ʿaduwwun clear mubīnun
Did I not enjoin upon you, O children of Adam, that you not worship Satan - [for] indeed, he is to you a clear enemy -
وَأَنِ And that wa-ani you worship Me uʿ'budūnī This hādhā (is) a Path ṣirāṭun Straight mus'taqīmun
And that you worship [only] Me? This is a straight path.
وَلَقَدْ And indeed walaqad he led astray aḍalla from you minkum a multitude jibillan great kathīran Then did not afalam you takūnū use reason taʿqilūna
And he had already led astray from among you much of creation, so did you not use reason?
هَـٰذِهِۦ This (is) hādhihi (the) Hell jahannamu which allatī you were kuntum promised tūʿadūna
This is the Hellfire which you were promised.
ٱصْلَوْهَا Burn therein iṣ'lawhā today l-yawma because bimā you used to kuntum disbelieve takfurūna
[Enter to] burn therein today for what you used to deny."1
ٱلْيَوْمَ This Day al-yawma We will seal nakhtimu [on] ʿalā their mouths afwāhihim and will speak to Us watukallimunā their hands aydīhim and will bear witness watashhadu their feet arjuluhum about what bimā they used to kānū earn yaksibūna
That Day, We will seal over their mouths, and their hands will speak to Us, and their feet will testify about what they used to earn.
وَلَوْ And if walaw We willed nashāu We (would have) surely obliterated laṭamasnā [over] ʿalā their eyes aʿyunihim then they (would) race fa-is'tabaqū (to find) the path l-ṣirāṭa then how fa-annā (could) they see yub'ṣirūna
And if We willed, We could have obliterated their eyes, and they would race to [find] the path, and how could they see?1
وَلَوْ And if walaw We willed nashāu surely, We (would have) transformed them lamasakhnāhum in ʿalā their places makānatihim then not famā they would have been able is'taṭāʿū to proceed muḍiyyan and not walā return yarjiʿūna
And if We willed, We could have deformed them, [paralyzing them] in their places so they would not be able to proceed, nor could they return.1
وَمَن And (he) whom waman We grant him long life nuʿammir'hu We reverse him nunakkis'hu in fī the creation l-khalqi Then will not afalā they use intellect yaʿqilūna
And he to whom We grant long life We reverse in creation;1 so will they not understand?
وَمَا And not wamā We taught him ʿallamnāhu [the] poetry l-shiʿ'ra and not wamā it is befitting yanbaghī for him lahu Not in it huwa (is) except illā a Reminder dhik'run and a Quran waqur'ānun clear mubīnun
And We did not give him [i.e., Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ)] knowledge of poetry, nor is it befitting for him. It is not but a message and a clear Qur’ān
لِّيُنذِرَ To warn liyundhira (him) who man is kāna alive ḥayyan and may be proved true wayaḥiqqa the Word l-qawlu against ʿalā the disbelievers l-kāfirīna
To warn whoever is alive1 and justify the word [i.e., decree] against the disbelievers.
أَوَلَمْ Do not awalam they see yaraw that We annā [We] created khalaqnā for them lahum from what mimmā have made ʿamilat Our hands aydīnā cattle anʿāman then they fahum [for them] lahā (are the) owners mālikūna
Do they not see that We have created for them from what Our hands1 have made, grazing livestock, and [then] they are their owners?
وَذَلَّلْنَـٰهَا And We have tamed them wadhallalnāhā for them lahum so some of them famin'hā they ride them rakūbuhum and some of them wamin'hā they eat yakulūna
And We have tamed them for them, so some of them they ride, and some of them they eat.
وَلَهُمْ And for them walahum therein fīhā (are) benefits manāfiʿu and drinks wamashāribu so (will) not afalā they give thanks yashkurūna
And for them therein are [other] benefits and drinks, so will they not be grateful?
وَٱتَّخَذُوا۟ But they have taken wa-ittakhadhū besides min besides dūni Allah l-lahi gods ālihatan that they may laʿallahum be helped yunṣarūna
But they have taken besides Allāh [false] deities that perhaps they would be helped.
لَا Not lā they are able yastaṭīʿūna to help them naṣrahum but they wahum for them lahum (are) hosts jundun (who will) be brought muḥ'ḍarūna
They are not able to help them, and they [themselves] are for them soldiers in attendance.1
فَلَا So (let) not falā grieve you yaḥzunka their speech qawluhum Indeed, We innā [We] know naʿlamu what mā they conceal yusirrūna and what wamā they declare yuʿ'linūna
So let not their speech grieve you. Indeed, We know what they conceal and what they declare.
أَوَلَمْ Does not awalam see yara [the] man l-insānu that We annā [We] created him khalaqnāhu from min a semen-drop nuṭ'fatin Then behold fa-idhā He huwa (is) an opponent khaṣīmun clear mubīnun
Does man not consider that We created him from a [mere] sperm-drop - then at once1 he is a clear adversary?
وَضَرَبَ And he sets forth waḍaraba for Us lanā an example mathalan and forgets wanasiya his (own) creation khalqahu He says qāla Who man will give life yuḥ'yī (to) the bones l-ʿiẓāma while they wahiya (are) decomposed ramīmun
And he presents for Us an example1 and forgets his [own] creation. He says, "Who will give life to bones while they are disintegrated?"
قُلْ Say qul He will give them life yuḥ'yīhā Who alladhī produced them ansha-ahā (the) first awwala time marratin and He wahuwa (is) of every bikulli creation khalqin All-Knower ʿalīmun
Say, "He will give them life who produced them the first time; and He is, of all creation, Knowing."
ٱلَّذِى The One Who alladhī made jaʿala for you lakum from mina the tree l-shajari [the] green l-akhḍari fire nāran and behold fa-idhā You antum from it min'hu ignite tūqidūna
[It is] He who made for you from the green tree, fire, and then from it you ignite.
أَوَلَيْسَ Is it not awalaysa (He) Who alladhī created khalaqa the heavens l-samāwāti and the earth wal-arḍa Able biqādirin to ʿalā [that] an create yakhluqa (the) like of them mith'lahum Yes, indeed balā and He wahuwa (is) the Supreme Creator l-khalāqu the All-Knower l-ʿalīmu
Is not He who created the heavens and the earth Able to create the likes of them? Yes, [it is so]; and He is the Knowing Creator.
إِنَّمَآ Only innamā His Command amruhu when idhā He intends arāda a thing shayan that an He says yaqūla to it lahu Be kun and it is fayakūnu
His command is only when He intends a thing that He says to it, "Be," and it is.
فَسُبْحَـٰنَ So glory be fasub'ḥāna (to) the One who alladhī in Whose hand biyadihi is (the) dominion malakūtu (of) all kulli things shayin and to Him wa-ilayhi you will be returned tur'jaʿūna
So exalted is He in whose hand is the realm of all things, and to Him you will be returned.
