يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O Prophet yāayyuhā O Prophet l-nabiyu Fear ittaqi Allah l-laha and (do) not walā obey tuṭiʿi the disbelievers l-kāfirīna and the hypocrites wal-munāfiqīna Indeed inna Allah l-laha is kāna All-Knower ʿalīman All-Wise ḥakīman
O Prophet, fear Allāh and do not obey the disbelievers and the hypocrites. Indeed, Allāh is ever Knowing and Wise.
وَٱتَّبِعْ And follow wa-ittabiʿ what mā is inspired yūḥā to you ilayka from min your Lord rabbika Indeed inna Allah l-laha is kāna of what bimā you do taʿmalūna All-Aware khabīran
And follow that which is revealed to you from your Lord. Indeed Allāh is ever, of what you do, Aware.
وَتَوَكَّلْ And put your trust watawakkal in ʿalā Allah l-lahi And Allah is sufficient wakafā And Allah is sufficient bil-lahi (as) Disposer of affairs wakīlan
And rely upon Allāh; and sufficient is Allāh as Disposer of affairs.1
مَّا Not mā Allah (has) made jaʿala Allah (has) made l-lahu for any man lirajulin [of] min two hearts qalbayni in fī his interior jawfihi And not wamā He (has) made jaʿala your wives azwājakumu whom allāī you declare unlawful tuẓāhirūna [of them] min'hunna (as) your mothers ummahātikum And not wamā He has made jaʿala your adopted sons adʿiyāakum your sons abnāakum That dhālikum (is) your saying qawlukum by your mouths bi-afwāhikum but Allah wal-lahu says yaqūlu the truth l-ḥaqa and He wahuwa guides yahdī (to) the Way l-sabīla
Allāh has not made for a man two hearts in his interior. And He has not made your wives whom you declare unlawful1 your mothers. And He has not made your claimed [i.e., adopted] sons your [true] sons. That is [merely] your saying by your mouths, but Allāh says the truth, and He guides to the [right] way.
ٱدْعُوهُمْ Call them id'ʿūhum by their fathers liābāihim it huwa (is) more just aqsaṭu near ʿinda Allah l-lahi But if fa-in not lam you know taʿlamū their fathers ābāahum then (they are) your brothers fa-ikh'wānukum in fī [the] religion l-dīni and your friends wamawālīkum But not is walaysa upon you ʿalaykum any blame junāḥun in what fīmā you made a mistake akhṭatum in it bihi but walākin what mā intended taʿammadat your hearts qulūbukum And Allah wakāna And Allah l-lahu (is) Oft-Forgiving ghafūran Most Merciful raḥīman
Call them1 by [the names of] their fathers; it is more just in the sight of Allāh. But if you do not know their fathers - then they are [still] your brothers in religion and those entrusted to you. And there is no blame upon you for that in which you have erred but [only for] what your hearts intended. And ever is Allāh Forgiving and Merciful.
ٱلنَّبِىُّ The Prophet al-nabiyu (is) closer awlā to the believers bil-mu'minīna than min their own selves anfusihim and his wives wa-azwājuhu (are) their mothers ummahātuhum And possessors wa-ulū (of) relationships l-arḥāmi some of them baʿḍuhum (are) closer awlā to another bibaʿḍin in fī (the) Decree kitābi (of) Allah l-lahi than mina the believers l-mu'minīna and the emigrants wal-muhājirīna except illā that an you do tafʿalū to ilā your friends awliyāikum a kindness maʿrūfan That is kāna That is dhālika in fī the Book l-kitābi written masṭūran
The Prophet is more worthy of the believers than themselves,1 and his wives are [in the position of] their mothers. And those of [blood] relationship are more entitled [to inheritance] in the decree of Allāh than the [other] believers and the emigrants, except that you may do to your close associates a kindness [through bequest]. That was in the Book2 inscribed.
وَإِذْ And when wa-idh We took akhadhnā from mina the Prophets l-nabiyīna their Covenant mīthāqahum and from you waminka and from wamin Nuh nūḥin and Ibrahim wa-ib'rāhīma and Musa wamūsā and Isa waʿīsā son ib'ni (of) Maryam maryama And We took wa-akhadhnā from them min'hum a covenant mīthāqan strong ghalīẓan
And [mention, O Muḥammad], when We took from the prophets their covenant and from you and from Noah and Abraham and Moses and Jesus, the son of Mary; and We took from them a solemn covenant
لِّيَسْـَٔلَ That He may ask liyasala the truthful l-ṣādiqīna about ʿan their truth ṣid'qihim And He has prepared wa-aʿadda for the disbelievers lil'kāfirīna a punishment ʿadhāban painful alīman
That He may question the truthful about their truth.1 And He has prepared for the disbelievers a painful punishment.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you yāayyuhā who alladhīna believe āmanū Remember udh'kurū (the) Favor niʿ'mata (of) Allah l-lahi upon you ʿalaykum when idh came to you jāatkum (the) hosts junūdun and We sent fa-arsalnā upon them ʿalayhim a wind rīḥan and hosts wajunūdan not lam you (could) see them tarawhā And Allah is wakāna And Allah is l-lahu of what bimā you do taʿmalūna All-Seer baṣīran
O you who have believed, remember the favor of Allāh upon you when armies came to [attack] you and We sent upon them a wind and armies [of angels] you did not see. And ever is Allāh, of what you do, Seeing.
إِذْ When idh they came upon you jāūkum from min above you fawqikum and from wamin below asfala you minkum and when wa-idh grew wild zāghati the eyes l-abṣāru and reached wabalaghati the hearts l-qulūbu the throats l-ḥanājira and you assumed wataẓunnūna about Allah bil-lahi the assumptions l-ẓunūnā
[Remember] when they came at you from above you and from below you, and when eyes shifted [in fear], and hearts reached the throats, and you assumed about Allāh [various] assumptions.
هُنَالِكَ There hunālika were tried ub'tuliya the believers l-mu'minūna and shaken wazul'zilū (with a) shake zil'zālan severe shadīdan
There the believers were tested and shaken with a severe shaking.
وَإِذْ And when wa-idh said yaqūlu the hypocrites l-munāfiqūna and those wa-alladhīna in fī their hearts qulūbihim (was) a disease maraḍun Not mā Allah promised us waʿadanā Allah promised us l-lahu and His messenger warasūluhu except illā delusion ghurūran
And [remember] when the hypocrites and those in whose hearts is disease said, "Allāh and His Messenger did not promise us except delusion,"
وَإِذْ And when wa-idh said qālat a party ṭāifatun of them min'hum O People yāahla (of) Yathrib yathriba No lā stand muqāma for you lakum so return fa-ir'jiʿū And asked permission wayastadhinu a group farīqun of them min'humu (from) the Prophet l-nabiya saying yaqūlūna Indeed inna our houses buyūtanā (are) exposed ʿawratun and not wamā they hiya (were) exposed biʿawratin Not in they wished yurīdūna but illā to flee firāran
And when a faction of them said, "O people of Yathrib,1 there is no stability for you [here], so return [home]." And a party of them asked permission of the Prophet, saying, "Indeed, our houses are exposed [i.e., unprotected]," while they were not exposed. They did not intend except to flee.
وَلَوْ And if walaw had been entered dukhilat upon them ʿalayhim from min all its sides aqṭārihā then thumma they had been asked su-ilū the treachery l-fit'nata they (would) have certainly done it laātawhā and not wamā they (would) have hesitated talabbathū over it bihā except illā a little yasīran
And if they had been entered upon from all its [surrounding] regions and fitnah [i.e., disbelief] had been demanded of them, they would have done it and not hesitated over it except briefly.
وَلَقَدْ And certainly walaqad they had kānū promised ʿāhadū Allah l-laha before min before qablu not lā they would turn yuwallūna their backs l-adbāra And is wakāna (the) promise ʿahdu (to) Allah l-lahi to be questioned masūlan
And they had already promised Allāh before not to turn their backs [i.e., flee]. And ever is the promise to Allāh [that about which one will be] questioned.
قُل Say qul Never lan will benefit you yanfaʿakumu the fleeing l-firāru if in you flee farartum from mina death l-mawti or awi killing l-qatli and then wa-idhan not lā you will be allowed to enjoy tumattaʿūna except illā a little qalīlan
Say, [O Muḥammad], "Never will fleeing benefit you if you should flee from death or killing; and then [if you did], you would not be given enjoyment [of life] except for a little."
قُلْ Say qul Who man (is) it that dhā (is) it that alladhī (can) protect you yaʿṣimukum from mina Allah l-lahi If in He intends arāda for you bikum any harm sūan or aw He intends arāda for you bikum a mercy raḥmatan And not walā they will find yajidūna for them lahum besides min besides dūni Allah l-lahi any protector waliyyan and not walā any helper naṣīran
Say, "Who is it that can protect you from Allāh1 if He intends for you an ill or intends for you a mercy?" And they will not find for themselves besides Allāh any protector or any helper.
۞ قَدْ Verily qad Allah knows yaʿlamu Allah knows l-lahu those who hinder l-muʿawiqīna among you minkum and those who say wal-qāilīna to their brothers li-ikh'wānihim Come halumma to us ilaynā and not walā they come yatūna (to) the battle l-basa except illā a few qalīlan
Already Allāh knows the hinderers1 among you and those [hypocrites] who say to their brothers, "Come to us,"2 and do not go to battle, except for a few,3
أَشِحَّةً Miserly ashiḥḥatan towards you ʿalaykum But when fa-idhā comes jāa the fear l-khawfu you see them ra-aytahum looking yanẓurūna at you ilayka revolving tadūru their eyes aʿyunuhum like one who ka-alladhī faints yugh'shā faints ʿalayhi from mina [the] death l-mawti But when fa-idhā departs dhahaba the fear l-khawfu they smite you salaqūkum with tongues bi-alsinatin sharp ḥidādin miserly ashiḥḥatan towards ʿalā the good l-khayri Those ulāika not lam they have believed yu'minū so Allah made worthless fa-aḥbaṭa so Allah made worthless l-lahu their deeds aʿmālahum And is wakāna that dhālika for ʿalā Allah l-lahi easy yasīran
Indisposed1 toward you. And when fear comes, you see them looking at you, their eyes revolving like one being overcome by death. But when fear departs, they lash you with sharp tongues, indisposed toward [any] good. Those have not believed, so Allāh has rendered their deeds worthless, and ever is that, for Allāh, easy.
يَحْسَبُونَ They think yaḥsabūna the confederates l-aḥzāba (have) not lam withdrawn yadhhabū And if wa-in (should) come yati the confederates l-aḥzābu they would wish yawaddū if law that they (were) annahum living in (the) desert bādūna among fī the Bedouins l-aʿrābi asking yasalūna about ʿan your news anbāikum And if walaw they were kānū among you fīkum not mā they would fight qātalū except illā a little qalīlan
They think the companies have not [yet] withdrawn.1 And if the companies should come [again], they would wish they were in the desert among the bedouins, inquiring [from afar] about your news. And if they should be among you, they would not fight except for a little.
لَّقَدْ Certainly laqad is kāna for you lakum in fī (the) Messenger rasūli (of) Allah l-lahi an excellent example us'watun an excellent example ḥasanatun for (one) who liman has kāna hope yarjū (in) Allah l-laha and the Day wal-yawma the Last l-ākhira and remembers wadhakara Allah l-laha much kathīran
There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allāh an excellent pattern1 for anyone whose hope is in Allāh and the Last Day and [who] remembers Allāh often.
وَلَمَّا And when walammā saw raā the believers l-mu'minūna the confederates l-aḥzāba they said qālū This hādhā (is) what mā Allah promised us waʿadanā Allah promised us l-lahu and His Messenger warasūluhu and Allah spoke the truth waṣadaqa and Allah spoke the truth l-lahu and His Messenger warasūluhu And not wamā it increased them zādahum except illā (in) faith īmānan and submission wataslīman
And when the believers saw the companies, they said, "This is what Allāh and His Messenger had promised us, and Allāh and His Messenger spoke the truth." And it increased them only in faith and acceptance.
مِّنَ Among mina the believers l-mu'minīna (are) men rijālun (who) have been true ṣadaqū (to) what mā they promised Allah ʿāhadū they promised Allah l-laha [on it] ʿalayhi And among them famin'hum (is he) who man has fulfilled qaḍā his vow naḥbahu and among them wamin'hum (is he) who man awaits yantaẓiru And not wamā they alter baddalū (by) any alteration tabdīlan
Among the believers are men true to what they promised Allāh. Among them is he who has fulfilled his vow [to the death], and among them is he who awaits [his chance]. And they did not alter [the terms of their commitment] by any alteration -
لِّيَجْزِىَ That Allah may reward liyajziya That Allah may reward l-lahu the truthful l-ṣādiqīna for their truth biṣid'qihim and punish wayuʿadhiba the hypocrites l-munāfiqīna if in He wills shāa or aw turn in mercy yatūba to them ʿalayhim Indeed inna Allah l-laha is kāna Oft-Forgiving ghafūran Most Merciful raḥīman
That Allāh may reward the truthful for their truth and punish the hypocrites if He wills or accept their repentance. Indeed, Allāh is ever Forgiving and Merciful.
وَرَدَّ And Allah turned back waradda And Allah turned back l-lahu those who alladhīna disbelieved kafarū in their rage bighayẓihim not lam they obtained yanālū any good khayran And sufficient is wakafā Allah l-lahu (for) the believers l-mu'minīna (in) the battle l-qitāla and Allah is wakāna and Allah is l-lahu All-Strong qawiyyan All-Mighty ʿazīzan
And Allāh repelled those who disbelieved, in their rage, not having obtained any good. And sufficient was Allāh for the believers in battle, and ever is Allāh Powerful and Exalted in Might.
وَأَنزَلَ And He brought down wa-anzala those who alladhīna backed them ẓāharūhum among min (the) People ahli (of) the Scripture l-kitābi from min their fortresses ṣayāṣīhim and cast waqadhafa into fī their hearts qulūbihimu [the] terror l-ruʿ'ba a group farīqan you killed taqtulūna and you took captive watasirūna a group farīqan
And He brought down those who supported them among the People of the Scripture1 from their fortresses and cast terror into their hearts [so that] a party [i.e., their men] you killed, and you took captive a party [i.e., the women and children].
وَأَوْرَثَكُمْ And He caused you to inherit wa-awrathakum their land arḍahum and their houses wadiyārahum and their properties wa-amwālahum and a land wa-arḍan not lam you (had) trodden taṭaūhā And Allah is wakāna And Allah is l-lahu on ʿalā every kulli thing shayin All-Powerful qadīran
And He caused you to inherit their land and their homes and their properties and a land which you have not trodden.1 And ever is Allāh, over all things, competent.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O Prophet yāayyuhā O Prophet l-nabiyu Say qul to your wives li-azwājika If in you kuntunna desire turid'na the life l-ḥayata (of) the world l-dun'yā and its adornment wazīnatahā then come fataʿālayna I will provide for you umattiʿ'kunna and release you wa-usarriḥ'kunna (with) a release sarāḥan good jamīlan
O Prophet, say to your wives, "If you should desire the worldly life and its adornment, then come, I will provide for you and give you a gracious release.
وَإِن But if wa-in you kuntunna desire turid'na Allah l-laha and His Messenger warasūlahu and the Home wal-dāra (of) the Hereafter l-ākhirata then indeed fa-inna Allah l-laha has prepared aʿadda for the good-doers lil'muḥ'sināti among you minkunna a reward ajran great ʿaẓīman
But if you should desire Allāh and His Messenger and the home of the Hereafter - then indeed, Allāh has prepared for the doers of good among you a great reward."
يَـٰنِسَآءَ O wives yānisāa (of) the Prophet l-nabiyi Whoever man commits yati from you minkunna immorality bifāḥishatin clear mubayyinatin will be doubled yuḍāʿaf for her lahā the punishment l-ʿadhābu two fold ḍiʿ'fayni And that is wakāna And that is dhālika for ʿalā Allah l-lahi easy yasīran
O wives of the Prophet, whoever of you should commit a clear immorality - for her the punishment would be doubled two fold, and ever is that, for Allāh, easy.
۞ وَمَن And whoever waman is obedient yaqnut among you minkunna to Allah lillahi and His Messenger warasūlihi and does wataʿmal righteousness ṣāliḥan We will give her nu'tihā her reward ajrahā twice marratayni and We have prepared wa-aʿtadnā for her lahā a provision riz'qan noble karīman
And whoever of you devoutly obeys Allāh and His Messenger and does righteousness - We will give her her reward twice; and We have prepared for her a noble provision.
يَـٰنِسَآءَ O wives yānisāa (of) the Prophet l-nabiyi You are not lastunna like anyone ka-aḥadin among mina the women l-nisāi If ini you fear (Allah) ittaqaytunna then (do) not falā be soft takhḍaʿna in speech bil-qawli lest should be moved with desire fayaṭmaʿa he who alladhī in fī his heart qalbihi (is) a disease maraḍun but say waqul'na a word qawlan appropriate maʿrūfan
O wives of the Prophet, you are not like anyone among women. If you fear Allāh, then do not be soft in speech [to men],1 lest he in whose heart is disease should covet, but speak with appropriate speech.
وَقَرْنَ And stay waqarna in fī your houses buyūtikunna and (do) not walā display yourselves tabarrajna (as was the) display tabarruja (of the times of) ignorance l-jāhiliyati the former l-ūlā And establish wa-aqim'na the prayer l-ṣalata and give waātīna zakah l-zakata and obey wa-aṭiʿ'na Allah l-laha and His Messenger warasūlahu Only innamā Allah wishes yurīdu Allah wishes l-lahu to remove liyudh'hiba from you ʿankumu the impurity l-rij'sa (O) People ahla (of) the House l-bayti And to purify you wayuṭahhirakum (with thorough) purification taṭhīran
And abide in your houses and do not display yourselves as [was] the display of the former times of ignorance. And establish prayer and give zakāh and obey Allāh and His Messenger. Allāh intends only to remove from you the impurity [of sin], O people of the [Prophet's] household, and to purify you with [extensive] purification.
وَٱذْكُرْنَ And remember wa-udh'kur'na what mā is recited yut'lā in fī your houses buyūtikunna of min (the) Verses āyāti (of) Allah l-lahi and the wisdom wal-ḥik'mati Indeed inna Allah l-laha is kāna All-Subtle laṭīfan All-Aware khabīran
And remember what is recited in your houses of the verses of Allāh and wisdom.1 Indeed, Allāh is ever Subtle2 and Aware.
إِنَّ Indeed inna the Muslim men l-mus'limīna and the Muslim women wal-mus'limāti and the believing men wal-mu'minīna and the believing women wal-mu'mināti and the obedient men wal-qānitīna and the obedient women wal-qānitāti and the truthful men wal-ṣādiqīna and the truthful women wal-ṣādiqāti and the patient men wal-ṣābirīna and the patient women wal-ṣābirāti and the humble men wal-khāshiʿīna and the humble women wal-khāshiʿāti and the men who give charity wal-mutaṣadiqīna and the women who give charity wal-mutaṣadiqāti and the men who fast wal-ṣāimīna and the women who fast wal-ṣāimāti and the men who guard wal-ḥāfiẓīna their chastity furūjahum and the women who guard (it) wal-ḥāfiẓāti and the men who remember wal-dhākirīna Allah l-laha much kathīran and the women who remember wal-dhākirāti Allah has prepared aʿadda Allah has prepared l-lahu for them lahum forgiveness maghfiratan and a reward wa-ajran great ʿaẓīman
Indeed, the Muslim men and Muslim women, the believing men and believing women, the obedient men and obedient women, the truthful men and truthful women, the patient men and patient women, the humble men and humble women, the charitable men and charitable women, the fasting men and fasting women, the men who guard their private parts and the women who do so, and the men who remember Allāh often and the women who do so - for them Allāh has prepared forgiveness and a great reward.
وَمَا And not wamā (it) is kāna for a believing man limu'minin and not walā (for) a believing woman mu'minatin when idhā Allah has decided qaḍā Allah has decided l-lahu and His Messenger warasūluhu a matter amran that an (there) should be yakūna for them lahumu (any) choice l-khiyaratu about min their affair amrihim And whoever waman disobeys yaʿṣi Allah l-laha and His Messenger warasūlahu certainly faqad he (has) strayed ḍalla (into) error ḍalālan clear mubīnan
It is not for a believing man or a believing woman, when Allāh and His Messenger have decided a matter, that they should [thereafter] have any choice about their affair. And whoever disobeys Allāh and His Messenger has certainly strayed into clear error.
وَإِذْ And when wa-idh you said taqūlu to the one lilladhī Allah bestowed favor anʿama Allah bestowed favor l-lahu on him ʿalayhi and you bestowed favor wa-anʿamta on him ʿalayhi Keep amsik to yourself ʿalayka your wife zawjaka and fear wa-ittaqi Allah l-laha But you concealed watukh'fī within fī yourself nafsika what mā Allah l-lahu (was to) disclose mub'dīhi And you fear watakhshā the people l-nāsa while Allah wal-lahu has more right aḥaqqu that an you (should) fear Him takhshāhu So when falammā ended qaḍā Zaid zaydun from her min'hā necessary (formalities) waṭaran We married her to you zawwajnākahā so that likay not lā there be yakūna on ʿalā the believers l-mu'minīna any discomfort ḥarajun concerning fī the wives azwāji (of) their adopted sons adʿiyāihim when idhā they have ended qaḍaw from them min'hunna necessary (formalities) waṭaran And is wakāna (the) Command amru (of) Allah l-lahi accomplished mafʿūlan
And [remember, O Muḥammad], when you said to the one on whom Allāh bestowed favor and you bestowed favor,1 "Keep your wife and fear Allāh," while you concealed within yourself that which Allāh is to disclose.2 And you feared the people,3 while Allāh has more right that you fear Him.4 So when Zayd had no longer any need for her, We married her to you in order that there not be upon the believers any discomfort [i.e., guilt] concerning the wives of their claimed [i.e., adopted] sons when they no longer have need of them. And ever is the command [i.e., decree] of Allāh accomplished.
مَّا Not mā (there can) be kāna upon ʿalā the Prophet l-nabiyi any min discomfort ḥarajin in what fīmā Allah has imposed faraḍa Allah has imposed l-lahu on him lahu (That is the) Way sunnata (of) Allah l-lahi concerning fī those who alladhīna passed away khalaw before min before qablu And is wakāna (the) Command amru (of) Allah l-lahi a decree qadaran destined maqdūran
There is not to be upon the Prophet any discomfort concerning that which Allāh has imposed upon him.1 [This is] the established way of Allāh with those [prophets] who have passed on before. And ever is the command of Allāh a destiny decreed.
ٱلَّذِينَ Those who alladhīna convey yuballighūna (the) Messages risālāti (of) Allah l-lahi and fear Him wayakhshawnahu and (do) not walā fear yakhshawna anyone aḥadan except illā Allah l-laha And sufficient is Allah wakafā And sufficient is Allah bil-lahi (as) a Reckoner ḥasīban
[Allāh praises] those who convey the messages of Allāh1 and fear Him and do not fear anyone but Allāh. And sufficient is Allāh as Accountant.
مَّا Not mā is kāna Muhammad muḥammadun (the) father abā (of) anyone aḥadin of min your men rijālikum but walākin (he is the) Messenger rasūla (of) Allah l-lahi and Seal wakhātama (of) the Prophets l-nabiyīna And Allah is wakāna And Allah is l-lahu of every bikulli thing shayin All-Knower ʿalīman
Muḥammad is not the father of [any] one of your men, but [he is] the Messenger of Allāh and seal [i.e., last] of the prophets. And ever is Allāh, of all things, Knowing.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you who believe yāayyuhā O you who believe alladhīna O you who believe āmanū Remember udh'kurū Allah l-laha (with) remembrance dhik'ran much kathīran
O you who have believed, remember Allāh with much remembrance
وَسَبِّحُوهُ And glorify Him wasabbiḥūhu morning buk'ratan and evening wa-aṣīlan
And exalt Him morning and afternoon.
هُوَ He huwa (is) the One Who alladhī sends His blessings yuṣallī upon you ʿalaykum and His Angels wamalāikatuhu so that He may bring you out liyukh'rijakum from mina the darkness[es] l-ẓulumāti to ilā the light l-nūri And He is wakāna to the believers bil-mu'minīna Merciful raḥīman
It is He who confers blessing upon you,1 and His angels [ask Him to do so] that He may bring you out from darknesses into the light. And ever is He, to the believers, Merciful.
تَحِيَّتُهُمْ Their greetings taḥiyyatuhum (on the) Day yawma they will meet Him yalqawnahu (will be), "Peace salāmun and He has prepared wa-aʿadda for them lahum a reward ajran noble karīman
Their greeting the Day they meet Him will be, "Peace." And He has prepared for them a noble reward.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O Prophet yāayyuhā O Prophet l-nabiyu Indeed, We innā have sent you arsalnāka (as) a witness shāhidan and a bearer of glad tidings wamubashiran and (as) a warner wanadhīran
O Prophet, indeed We have sent you as a witness and a bringer of good tidings and a warner
وَدَاعِيًا And as one who invites wadāʿiyan to ilā Allah l-lahi by His permission bi-idh'nihi and (as) a lamp wasirājan illuminating munīran
And one who invites to Allāh, by His permission, and an illuminating lamp.
وَبَشِّرِ And give glad tidings wabashiri (to) the believers l-mu'minīna that bi-anna for them lahum (is) from mina Allah l-lahi a Bounty faḍlan great kabīran
And give good tidings to the believers that they will have from Allāh great bounty.
وَلَا And (do) not walā obey tuṭiʿi the disbelievers l-kāfirīna and the hypocrites wal-munāfiqīna and disregard wadaʿ their harm adhāhum and put your trust watawakkal in ʿalā Allah l-lahi And sufficient is Allah wakafā And sufficient is Allah bil-lahi (as) a Trustee wakīlan
And do not obey the disbelievers and the hypocrites and disregard their annoyance, and rely upon Allāh. And sufficient is Allāh as Disposer of affairs.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you who believe yāayyuhā O you who believe alladhīna O you who believe āmanū When idhā you marry nakaḥtumu believing women l-mu'mināti and then thumma divorce them ṭallaqtumūhunna before min before qabli [that] an you have touched them tamassūhunna then not famā for you lakum on them ʿalayhinna any min waiting period ʿiddatin (to) count concerning them taʿtaddūnahā So provide for them famattiʿūhunna and release them wasarriḥūhunna (with) a release sarāḥan good jamīlan
O you who have believed, when you marry believing women and then divorce them before you have touched them [i.e., consummated the marriage], then there is not for you any waiting period to count concerning them. So provide for them and give them a gracious release.

O Prophet, indeed We have made lawful to you your wives to whom you have given their due compensation1 and those your right hand possesses from what Allāh has returned to you [of captives] and the daughters of your paternal uncles and the daughters of your paternal aunts and the daughters of your maternal uncles and the daughters of your maternal aunts who emigrated with you and a believing woman if she gives herself to the Prophet [and] if the Prophet wishes to marry her; [this is] only for you, excluding the [other] believers. We certainly know what We have made obligatory upon them concerning their wives and those their right hands possess, [but this is for you] in order that there will be upon you no discomfort [i.e., difficulty]. And ever is Allāh Forgiving and Merciful.
۞ تُرْجِى You may defer tur'jī whom man you will tashāu of them min'hunna or you may take watu'wī to yourself ilayka whom man you will tashāu And whoever wamani you desire ib'taghayta of those whom mimman you (had) set aside ʿazalta then (there is) no falā blame junāḥa upon you ʿalayka That dhālika (is) more suitable adnā that an may be cooled taqarra their eyes aʿyunuhunna and not walā they grieve yaḥzanna and they may be pleased wayarḍayna with what bimā you have given them ātaytahunna all of them kulluhunna And Allah wal-lahu knows yaʿlamu what mā (is) in fī your hearts qulūbikum And Allah is wakāna And Allah is l-lahu All-Knower ʿalīman Most Forbearing ḥalīman
You, [O Muḥammad], may put aside whom you will of them1 or take to yourself whom you will. And any that you desire of those [wives] from whom you had [temporarily] separated - there is no blame upon you [in returning her]. That is more suitable that they should be content and not grieve and that they should be satisfied with what you have given them - all of them. And Allāh knows what is in your hearts. And ever is Allāh Knowing and Forbearing.
لَّا (It is) not lā lawful yaḥillu for you laka (to marry) women l-nisāu after (this) min after (this) baʿdu and not walā to an exchange tabaddala them bihinna for min (other) wives azwājin even if walaw pleases you aʿjabaka their beauty ḥus'nuhunna except illā whom mā you rightfully possess malakat you rightfully possess yamīnuka And Allah is wakāna And Allah is l-lahu over ʿalā all kulli things shayin an Observer raqīban
Not lawful to you, [O Muḥammad], are [any additional] women after [this], nor [is it] for you to exchange them for [other] wives, even if their beauty were to please you, except what your right hand possesses. And ever is Allāh, over all things, an Observer.1

O you who have believed, do not enter the houses of the Prophet except when you are permitted for a meal, without awaiting its readiness. But when you are invited, then enter; and when you have eaten, disperse without seeking to remain for conversation. Indeed, that [behavior] was troubling the Prophet, and he is shy of [dismissing] you. But Allāh is not shy of the truth. And when you ask [his wives] for something, ask them from behind a partition. That is purer for your hearts and their hearts. And it is not [conceivable or lawful] for you to harm the Messenger of Allāh or to marry his wives after him, ever. Indeed, that would be in the sight of Allāh an enormity.
إِن Whether in you reveal tub'dū a thing shayan or aw conceal it tukh'fūhu indeed fa-inna Allah l-laha is kāna of all bikulli things shayin All-Knower ʿalīman

Indeed, those who abuse Allāh and His Messenger - Allāh has cursed them in this world and the Hereafter and prepared for them a humiliating punishment.
وَٱلَّذِينَ And those who wa-alladhīna harm yu'dhūna the believing men l-mu'minīna and the believing women wal-mu'mināti for other than bighayri what mā they have earned ik'tasabū then certainly faqadi they bear iḥ'tamalū false accusation buh'tānan and sin wa-ith'man manifest mubīnan
And those who harm believing men and believing women for [something] other than what they have earned [i.e., deserved] have certainly borne upon themselves a slander and manifest sin.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O Prophet yāayyuhā O Prophet l-nabiyu Say qul to your wives li-azwājika and your daughters wabanātika and (the) women wanisāi (of) the believers l-mu'minīna to draw yud'nīna over themselves ʿalayhinna [of] min their outer garments jalābībihinna That dhālika (is) more suitable adnā that an they should be known yuʿ'rafna and not falā harmed yu'dhayna And is wakāna Allah l-lahu Oft-Forgiving ghafūran Most Merciful raḥīman
O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments.1 That is more suitable that they will be known2 and not be abused. And ever is Allāh Forgiving and Merciful.3
۞ لَّئِن If la-in (do) not lam cease yantahi the hypocrites l-munāfiqūna and those who wa-alladhīna in fī their hearts qulūbihim (is) a disease maraḍun and those who spread rumors wal-mur'jifūna in fī the city l-madīnati We will let you overpower them lanugh'riyannaka We will let you overpower them bihim then thumma not lā they will remain your neighbors yujāwirūnaka therein fīhā except illā (for) a little qalīlan
If the hypocrites and those in whose hearts is disease1 and those who spread rumors in al-Madīnah do not cease, We will surely incite you against them; then they will not remain your neighbors therein except for a little,

Accursed wherever they are found, [being] seized and massacred completely.

[This is] the established way of Allāh with those who passed on before; and you will not find in the way of Allāh any change.
يَسْـَٔلُكَ Ask you yasaluka the people l-nāsu about ʿani the Hour l-sāʿati Say qul Only innamā its knowledge ʿil'muhā (is) with ʿinda Allah l-lahi And what wamā will make you know yud'rīka Perhaps laʿalla the Hour l-sāʿata is takūnu near qarīban
People ask you concerning the Hour. Say, "Knowledge of it is only with Allāh. And what may make you perceive? Perhaps the Hour is near."

Abiding therein forever, they will not find a protector or a helper.

The Day their faces will be turned about in the Fire, they will say, "How we wish we had obeyed Allāh and obeyed the Messenger."
وَقَالُوا۟ And they will say waqālū Our Lord rabbanā Indeed, we innā [we] obeyed aṭaʿnā our chiefs sādatanā and our great men wakubarāanā and they misled us fa-aḍallūnā (from) the Way l-sabīlā
And they will say, "Our Lord, indeed we obeyed our masters and our dignitaries,1 and they led us astray from the [right] way.
رَبَّنَآ Our Lord rabbanā Give them ātihim double ḍiʿ'fayni [of] mina punishment l-ʿadhābi and curse them wal-ʿanhum (with) a curse laʿnan great kabīran
Our Lord, give them double the punishment and curse them with a great curse."
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you who believe yāayyuhā O you who believe alladhīna O you who believe āmanū (Do) not lā be takūnū like those who ka-alladhīna abused ādhaw Musa mūsā then Allah cleared him fabarra-ahu then Allah cleared him l-lahu of what mimmā they said qālū And he was wakāna near ʿinda Allah l-lahi honorable wajīhan
O you who have believed, be not like those who abused Moses; then Allāh cleared him of what they said. And he, in the sight of Allāh, was distinguished.

He will [then] amend for you your deeds and forgive you your sins. And whoever obeys Allāh and His Messenger has certainly attained a great attainment.

Indeed, We offered the Trust1 to the heavens and the earth and the mountains, and they declined to bear it and feared it; but man [undertook to] bear it. Indeed, he was unjust and ignorant.2
لِّيُعَذِّبَ So that Allah may punish liyuʿadhiba So that Allah may punish l-lahu the hypocrite men l-munāfiqīna and the hypocrite women wal-munāfiqāti and the polytheist men wal-mush'rikīna and the polytheist women wal-mush'rikāti and Allah will turn (in Mercy) wayatūba and Allah will turn (in Mercy) l-lahu to ʿalā the believing men l-mu'minīna and the believing women wal-mu'mināti And Allah is wakāna And Allah is l-lahu Oft-Forgiving ghafūran Most Merciful raḥīman
[It1 was] so that Allāh may punish the hypocrite men and hypocrite women and the men and women who associate others with Him and that Allāh may accept repentance from the believing men and believing women. And ever is Allāh Forgiving and Merciful.
