The Prostration
﷽
السجدة
تَنزِيلُ (The) revelation tanzīlu (of) the Book l-kitābi (there is) no lā doubt rayba about it fīhi from min (the) Lord rabbi (of) the worlds l-ʿālamīna
[This is] the revelation of the Book about which there is no doubt from the Lord of the worlds.
أَمْ Or am (do) they say yaqūlūna He invented it if'tarāhu Nay bal it huwa (is) the truth l-ḥaqu from min your Lord rabbika that you may warn litundhira a people qawman not mā has come to them atāhum any min warner nadhīrin before you min before you qablika so that they may laʿallahum be guided yahtadūna
Or do they say, "He invented it"? Rather, it is the truth from your Lord, [O Muḥammad], that you may warn a people to whom no warner has come before you [so] perhaps they will be guided.
ٱللَّهُ Allah al-lahu (is) the One Who alladhī created khalaqa the heavens l-samāwāti and the earth wal-arḍa and whatever wamā (is) between them baynahumā in fī six sittati periods ayyāmin Then thumma established Himself is'tawā on ʿalā the Throne l-ʿarshi Not mā for you lakum besides Him min besides Him dūnihi any min protector waliyyin and not walā any intercessor shafīʿin Then will not afalā you take heed tatadhakkarūna
It is Allāh who created the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them in six days; then He established Himself above the Throne.1 You have not besides Him any protector or any intercessor; so will you not be reminded?
يُدَبِّرُ He regulates yudabbiru the affair l-amra of mina the heaven l-samāi to ilā the earth l-arḍi then thumma it will ascend yaʿruju to Him ilayhi in fī a Day yawmin (the) measure of which is kāna (the) measure of which is miq'dāruhu a thousand alfa years sanatin of what mimmā you count taʿuddūna
He arranges [each] matter from the heaven to the earth; then it will ascend to Him in a Day, the extent of which is a thousand years of those which you count.
ذَٰلِكَ That dhālika (is the) Knower ʿālimu (of) the hidden l-ghaybi and the witnessed wal-shahādati the All-Mighty l-ʿazīzu the Most Merciful l-raḥīmu
That is the Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, the Exalted in Might, the Merciful,
ٱلَّذِىٓ The One Who alladhī made good aḥsana every kulla thing shayin He created khalaqahu and He began wabada-a (the) creation khalqa (of) man l-insāni from min clay ṭīnin
Who perfected everything which He created and began the creation of man from clay.
ثُمَّ Then thumma He made jaʿala his progeny naslahu from min an extract sulālatin of min water māin despised mahīnin
Then He made his posterity out of the extract of a liquid disdained.
ثُمَّ Then thumma He fashioned him sawwāhu and breathed wanafakha into him fīhi from min His spirit rūḥihi and made wajaʿala for you lakumu the hearing l-samʿa and the sight wal-abṣāra and feelings wal-afidata little qalīlan [what] mā thanks you give tashkurūna
Then He proportioned him and breathed into him from His [created] soul1 and made for you hearing and vision and hearts [i.e., intellect]; little are you grateful.
وَقَالُوٓا۟ And they say waqālū Is (it) when a-idhā we are lost ḍalalnā in fī the earth l-arḍi will we a-innā certainly be in lafī a creation khalqin new jadīdin Nay bal they hum in (the) meeting biliqāi (of) their Lord rabbihim (are) disbelievers kāfirūna
And they say, "When we are lost [i.e., disintegrated] within the earth, will we indeed be [recreated] in a new creation?" Rather, they are, in the meeting with their Lord, disbelievers.
۞ قُلْ Say qul Will take your soul yatawaffākum (the) Angel malaku (of) the death l-mawti the one who alladhī has been put in charge wukkila of you bikum Then thumma to ilā your Lord rabbikum you will be returned tur'jaʿūna
Say, "The angel of death who has been entrusted with you will take you. Then to your Lord you will be returned."
وَلَوْ And if walaw you (could) see tarā when idhi the criminals l-muj'rimūna (will) hang nākisū their heads ruūsihim before ʿinda their Lord rabbihim Our Lord rabbanā we have seen abṣarnā and we have heard wasamiʿ'nā so return us fa-ir'jiʿ'nā we will do naʿmal righteous (deeds) ṣāliḥan Indeed, we innā (are now) certain mūqinūna
If you could but see when the criminals are hanging their heads before their Lord, [saying], "Our Lord, we have seen and heard, so return us [to the world]; we will work righteousness. Indeed, we are [now] certain."
وَلَوْ And if walaw We (had) willed shi'nā surely We (would) have given laātaynā every kulla soul nafsin its guidance hudāhā but walākin (is) true ḥaqqa the Word l-qawlu from Me minnī that I will surely fill la-amla-anna Hell jahannama with mina the jinn l-jinati and the men wal-nāsi together ajmaʿīna
And if We had willed, We could have given every soul its guidance, but the word1 from Me will come into effect [that] "I will surely fill Hell with jinn and people all together.
فَذُوقُوا۟ So taste fadhūqū because bimā you forgot nasītum (the) meeting liqāa (of) this Day of yours yawmikum (of) this Day of yours hādhā Indeed, We innā have forgotten you nasīnākum And taste wadhūqū (the) punishment ʿadhāba (of) eternity l-khul'di for what bimā you used (to) kuntum do taʿmalūna
So taste [punishment] because you forgot the meeting of this, your Day; indeed, We have [accordingly] forgotten you. And taste the punishment of eternity for what you used to do."
إِنَّمَا Only innamā believe yu'minu in Our Verses biāyātinā those who alladhīna when idhā they are reminded dhukkirū of them bihā fall down kharrū prostrating sujjadan and glorify wasabbaḥū (the) praises biḥamdi (of) their Lord rabbihim and they wahum are not arrogant lā are not arrogant yastakbirūna
Only those believe in Our verses who, when they are reminded by them, fall down in prostration and exalt [Allāh] with praise of their Lord, and they are not arrogant.
تَتَجَافَىٰ Forsake tatajāfā their sides junūbuhum from ʿani (their) beds l-maḍājiʿi they call yadʿūna their Lord rabbahum (in) fear khawfan and hope waṭamaʿan and out of what wamimmā We have provided them razaqnāhum they spend yunfiqūna
Their sides part [i.e., they arise] from [their] beds; they supplicate their Lord in fear and aspiration, and from what We have provided them, they spend.1
فَلَا And not falā knows taʿlamu a soul nafsun what mā is hidden ukh'fiya for them lahum of min (the) comfort qurrati (for) the eyes aʿyunin (as) a reward jazāan for what bimā they used (to) kānū do yaʿmalūna
And no soul knows what has been hidden for them of comfort for eyes [i.e., satisfaction] as reward for what they used to do.
أَفَمَن Then is one who afaman is kāna a believer mu'minan like (him) who kaman is kāna defiantly disobedient fāsiqan Not lā they are equal yastawūna
Then is one who was a believer like one who was defiantly disobedient? They are not equal.
أَمَّا As for ammā those who alladhīna believe āmanū and do waʿamilū righteous deeds l-ṣāliḥāti then for them falahum (are) Gardens jannātu (of) Refuge l-mawā (as) hospitality nuzulan for what bimā they used (to) kānū do yaʿmalūna
As for those who believed and did righteous deeds, for them will be the Gardens of Refuge as accommodation for what they used to do.
وَأَمَّا But as for wa-ammā those who alladhīna are defiantly disobedient fasaqū then their refuge famawāhumu (is) the Fire l-nāru Every time kullamā they wish arādū to an come out yakhrujū from it min'hā they (will) be returned uʿīdū in it fīhā and it (will) be said waqīla to them lahum Taste dhūqū (the) punishment ʿadhāba (of) the Fire l-nāri which alladhī you used (to) kuntum [in it] bihi deny tukadhibūna
But as for those who defiantly disobeyed, their refuge is the Fire. Every time they wish to emerge from it, they will be returned to it while it is said to them, "Taste the punishment of the Fire which you used to deny."
وَلَنُذِيقَنَّهُم And surely, We will let them taste walanudhīqannahum of mina the punishment l-ʿadhābi the nearer l-adnā before dūna the punishment l-ʿadhābi the greater l-akbari so that they may laʿallahum return yarjiʿūna
And We will surely let them taste the nearer punishment1 short of the greater punishment that perhaps they will return [i.e., repent].
وَمَنْ And who waman (is) more unjust aẓlamu than (he) who mimman is reminded dhukkira of (the) Verses biāyāti (of) his Lord rabbihi then thumma he turns away aʿraḍa from them ʿanhā Indeed, We innā from mina the criminals l-muj'rimīna (will) take retribution muntaqimūna
And who is more unjust than one who is reminded of the verses of his Lord; then he turns away from them? Indeed We, from the criminals, will take retribution.
وَلَقَدْ And certainly walaqad We gave ātaynā Musa mūsā the Scripture l-kitāba so (do) not falā be takun in fī doubt mir'yatin about min receiving it liqāihi And We made it wajaʿalnāhu a guide hudan for the Children of Israel libanī for the Children of Israel is'rāīla
And We certainly gave Moses the Scripture, so do not be in doubt over his meeting.1 And We made it [i.e., the Torah] guidance for the Children of Israel.
وَجَعَلْنَا And We made wajaʿalnā from them min'hum leaders a-immatan guiding yahdūna by Our Command bi-amrinā when lammā they were patient ṣabarū and they were wakānū of Our Verses biāyātinā certain yūqinūna
And We made from among them leaders guiding by Our command when they were patient and [when] they were certain of Our signs.
إِنَّ Indeed inna your Lord rabbaka [He] huwa will judge yafṣilu between them baynahum (on the) Day yawma (of) Resurrection l-qiyāmati in what fīmā they used (to) kānū [in it] fīhi differ yakhtalifūna
Indeed, your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning that over which they used to differ.
أَوَلَمْ Does it not awalam guide yahdi [for] them lahum (that) how many kam We have destroyed ahlaknā before them min before them qablihim of mina the generations l-qurūni they walk about yamshūna in fī their dwellings masākinihim Indeed inna in fī that dhālika surely, are Signs laāyātin Then do not afalā they hear yasmaʿūna
Has it not become clear to them how many generations We destroyed before them, [as] they walk among their dwellings? Indeed in that are signs; then do they not hear?
أَوَلَمْ Do not awalam they see yaraw that We annā drive nasūqu water l-māa to ilā the land l-arḍi [the] barren l-juruzi then We bring forth fanukh'riju thereby bihi crops zarʿan eat takulu from it min'hu their cattle anʿāmuhum and they themselves wa-anfusuhum Then do not afalā they see yub'ṣirūna
Have they not seen that We drive water [in clouds] to barren land and bring forth thereby crops from which their livestock eat and [they] themselves? Then do they not see?
وَيَقُولُونَ And they say wayaqūlūna When (will be) matā this hādhā decision l-fatḥu if in you are kuntum truthful ṣādiqīna
And they say, "When will be this conquest,1 if you should be truthful?"
قُلْ Say qul (On the) Day yawma (of) the Decision l-fatḥi not lā will benefit yanfaʿu those who alladhīna disbelieve kafarū their belief īmānuhum and not walā they hum will be granted respite yunẓarūna
Say, [O Muḥammad], "On the Day of Conquest the belief of those who had disbelieved will not benefit them, nor will they be reprieved."
فَأَعْرِضْ So turn away fa-aʿriḍ from them ʿanhum and wait wa-intaẓir Indeed, they innahum (are) waiting muntaẓirūna
So turn away from them and wait. Indeed, they are waiting.
