Alif, Lām, Meem.1

— Saheeh International

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

al-lahu

لَآ

(there is) no

إِلَـٰهَ

God

ilāha

إِلَّا

except

illā

هُوَ

Him

huwa

ٱلْحَىُّ

the Ever-Living

l-ḥayu

ٱلْقَيُّومُ

the Sustainer of all that exists

l-qayūmu

٢

Allāh - there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining.1

— Saheeh International

نَزَّلَ

He revealed

nazzala

عَلَيْكَ

to you

ʿalayka

ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ

the Book

l-kitāba

بِٱلْحَقِّ

in [the] truth

bil-ḥaqi

مُصَدِّقًۭا

confirming

muṣaddiqan

لِّمَا

that which

limā

بَيْنَ

(was)

bayna

يَدَيْهِ

before it

yadayhi

وَأَنزَلَ

and He revealed

wa-anzala

ٱلتَّوْرَىٰةَ

the Taurat

l-tawrāta

وَٱلْإِنجِيلَ

and the Injeel

wal-injīla

٣

He has sent down upon you, [O Muḥammad], the Book in truth, confirming what was before it. And He revealed the Torah and the Gospel

— Saheeh International

مِن

From

min

قَبْلُ

before (this)

qablu

هُدًۭى

(as) guidance

hudan

لِّلنَّاسِ

for the mankind

lilnnāsi

وَأَنزَلَ

And (He) revealed

wa-anzala

ٱلْفُرْقَانَ ۗ

the Criterion

l-fur'qāna

إِنَّ

Verily

inna

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

كَفَرُوا۟

disbelieve[d]

kafarū

بِـَٔايَـٰتِ

in (the) Verses

biāyāti

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

لَهُمْ

for them

lahum

عَذَابٌۭ

(is) a punishment

ʿadhābun

شَدِيدٌۭ ۗ

severe

shadīdun

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

عَزِيزٌۭ

(is) All-Mighty

ʿazīzun

ذُو

All-Able

dhū

ٱنتِقَامٍ

(of) retribution

intiqāmin

٤

Before, as guidance for the people. And He revealed the Criterion [i.e., the Qur’ān]. Indeed, those who disbelieve in the verses of Allāh will have a severe punishment, and Allāh is Exalted in Might, the Owner of Retribution.1

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

لَا

not

يَخْفَىٰ

is hidden

yakhfā

عَلَيْهِ

from Him

ʿalayhi

شَىْءٌۭ

anything

shayon

فِى

in

ٱلْأَرْضِ

the earth

l-arḍi

وَلَا

and not

walā

فِى

in

ٱلسَّمَآءِ

the heaven

l-samāi

٥

Indeed, from Allāh nothing is hidden in the earth nor in the heaven.

— Saheeh International

هُوَ

He

huwa

ٱلَّذِى

(is) the One Who

alladhī

يُصَوِّرُكُمْ

shapes you

yuṣawwirukum

فِى

in

ٱلْأَرْحَامِ

the wombs

l-arḥāmi

كَيْفَ

how(ever)

kayfa

يَشَآءُ ۚ

He wills

yashāu

لَآ

(There is) no

إِلَـٰهَ

god

ilāha

إِلَّا

except

illā

هُوَ

Him

huwa

ٱلْعَزِيزُ

the All-Mighty

l-ʿazīzu

ٱلْحَكِيمُ

the All-Wise

l-ḥakīmu

٦

It is He who forms you in the wombs however He wills. There is no deity except Him, the Exalted in Might, the Wise.

— Saheeh International

هُوَ

He

huwa

ٱلَّذِىٓ

(is) the One Who

alladhī

أَنزَلَ

revealed

anzala

عَلَيْكَ

to you

ʿalayka

ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ

the Book

l-kitāba

مِنْهُ

of it

min'hu

ءَايَـٰتٌۭ

(are) Verses

āyātun

مُّحْكَمَـٰتٌ

absolutely clear

muḥ'kamātun

هُنَّ

they (are)

hunna

أُمُّ

the foundation

ummu

ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ

(of) the Book

l-kitābi

وَأُخَرُ

and others

wa-ukharu

مُتَشَـٰبِهَـٰتٌۭ ۖ

(are) allegorical

mutashābihātun

فَأَمَّا

Then as for

fa-ammā

ٱلَّذِينَ

those

alladhīna

فِى

in

قُلُوبِهِمْ

their hearts

qulūbihim

زَيْغٌۭ

(is) perversity

zayghun

فَيَتَّبِعُونَ

[so] they follow

fayattabiʿūna

مَا

what

تَشَـٰبَهَ

(is) allegorical

tashābaha

مِنْهُ

of it

min'hu

ٱبْتِغَآءَ

seeking

ib'tighāa

ٱلْفِتْنَةِ

[the] discord

l-fit'nati

وَٱبْتِغَآءَ

and seeking

wa-ib'tighāa

تَأْوِيلِهِۦ ۗ

its interpretation

tawīlihi

وَمَا

And not

wamā

يَعْلَمُ

knows

yaʿlamu

تَأْوِيلَهُۥٓ

its interpretation

tawīlahu

إِلَّا

except

illā

ٱللَّهُ ۗ

Allah

l-lahu

وَٱلرَّٰسِخُونَ

And those firm

wal-rāsikhūna

فِى

in

ٱلْعِلْمِ

[the] knowledge

l-ʿil'mi

يَقُولُونَ

they say

yaqūlūna

ءَامَنَّا

We believe

āmannā

بِهِۦ

in it

bihi

كُلٌّۭ

All

kullun

مِّنْ

(is)

min

عِندِ

from

ʿindi

رَبِّنَا ۗ

our Lord

rabbinā

وَمَا

And not

wamā

يَذَّكَّرُ

will take heed

yadhakkaru

إِلَّآ

except

illā

أُو۟لُوا۟

men

ulū

ٱلْأَلْبَـٰبِ

(of) understanding

l-albābi

٧

It is He who has sent down to you, [O Muḥammad], the Book; in it are verses [that are] precise - they are the foundation of the Book - and others unspecific.1 As for those in whose hearts is deviation [from truth], they will follow that of it which is unspecific, seeking discord and seeking an interpretation [suitable to them]. And no one knows its [true] interpretation except Allāh. But those firm in knowledge say, "We believe in it. All [of it] is from our Lord." And no one will be reminded except those of understanding.

— Saheeh International

رَبَّنَا

Our Lord

rabbanā

لَا

(Do) not

تُزِغْ

deviate

tuzigh

قُلُوبَنَا

our hearts

qulūbanā

بَعْدَ

after

baʿda

إِذْ

[when]

idh

هَدَيْتَنَا

You (have) guided us

hadaytanā

وَهَبْ

and grant

wahab

لَنَا

(for) us

lanā

مِن

from

min

لَّدُنكَ

Yourself

ladunka

رَحْمَةً ۚ

mercy

raḥmatan

إِنَّكَ

Indeed You

innaka

أَنتَ

You

anta

ٱلْوَهَّابُ

(are) the Bestower

l-wahābu

٨

[Who say], "Our Lord, let not our hearts deviate after You have guided us and grant us from Yourself mercy. Indeed, You are the Bestower.1

— Saheeh International

رَبَّنَآ

Our Lord

rabbanā

إِنَّكَ

Indeed, You

innaka

جَامِعُ

will gather

jāmiʿu

ٱلنَّاسِ

[the] mankind

l-nāsi

لِيَوْمٍۢ

on a Day

liyawmin

لَّا

(there is) no

رَيْبَ

doubt

rayba

فِيهِ ۚ

in it

fīhi

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

لَا

(does) not

يُخْلِفُ

break

yukh'lifu

ٱلْمِيعَادَ

the Promise

l-mīʿāda

٩

Our Lord, surely You will gather the people for a Day about which there is no doubt. Indeed, Allāh does not fail in His promise."

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

كَفَرُوا۟

disbelieve[d]

kafarū

لَن

never

lan

تُغْنِىَ

will avail

tugh'niya

عَنْهُمْ

[for] them

ʿanhum

أَمْوَٰلُهُمْ

their wealth

amwāluhum

وَلَآ

and not

walā

أَوْلَـٰدُهُم

their children

awlāduhum

مِّنَ

against

mina

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

شَيْـًۭٔا ۖ

anything

shayan

وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

and those

wa-ulāika

هُمْ

they (are)

hum

وَقُودُ

(the) fuel

waqūdu

ٱلنَّارِ

(for) the Fire

l-nāri

١٠

Indeed, those who disbelieve - never will their wealth or their children avail them against Allāh at all. And it is they who are fuel for the Fire.

— Saheeh International

كَدَأْبِ

Like behavior

kadabi

ءَالِ

(of the) people

āli

فِرْعَوْنَ

(of) Firaun

fir'ʿawna

وَٱلَّذِينَ

and those who

wa-alladhīna

مِن

(were) from

min

قَبْلِهِمْ ۚ

before them

qablihim

كَذَّبُوا۟

They denied

kadhabū

بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا

Our Signs

biāyātinā

فَأَخَذَهُمُ

so seized them

fa-akhadhahumu

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

بِذُنُوبِهِمْ ۗ

for their sins

bidhunūbihim

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

شَدِيدُ

(is) severe

shadīdu

ٱلْعِقَابِ

(in) [the] punishment

l-ʿiqābi

١١

[Theirs is] like the custom of the people of Pharaoh and those before them. They denied Our signs, so Allāh seized them for their sins. And Allāh is severe in penalty.

— Saheeh International

قُل

Say

qul

لِّلَّذِينَ

to those who

lilladhīna

كَفَرُوا۟

disbelieve[d]

kafarū

سَتُغْلَبُونَ

You will be overcome

satugh'labūna

وَتُحْشَرُونَ

and you will be gathered

watuḥ'sharūna

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

جَهَنَّمَ ۚ

Hell

jahannama

وَبِئْسَ

[and] an evil

wabi'sa

ٱلْمِهَادُ

[the] resting place

l-mihādu

١٢

Say to those who disbelieve, "You will be overcome and gathered together to Hell, and wretched is the resting place."

— Saheeh International

قَدْ

Surely

qad

كَانَ

it was

kāna

لَكُمْ

for you

lakum

ءَايَةٌۭ

a sign

āyatun

فِى

in

فِئَتَيْنِ

(the) two hosts

fi-atayni

ٱلْتَقَتَا ۖ

which met

l-taqatā

فِئَةٌۭ

one group

fi-atun

تُقَـٰتِلُ

fighting

tuqātilu

فِى

in

سَبِيلِ

(the) way

sabīli

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

وَأُخْرَىٰ

and another

wa-ukh'rā

كَافِرَةٌۭ

disbelievers

kāfiratun

يَرَوْنَهُم

They were seeing them

yarawnahum

مِّثْلَيْهِمْ

twice of them

mith'layhim

رَأْىَ

with the sight

raya

ٱلْعَيْنِ ۚ

(of) their eyes

l-ʿayni

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

يُؤَيِّدُ

supports

yu-ayyidu

بِنَصْرِهِۦ

with His help

binaṣrihi

مَن

whom

man

يَشَآءُ ۗ

He wills

yashāu

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

فِى

in

ذَٰلِكَ

that

dhālika

لَعِبْرَةًۭ

surely (is) a lesson

laʿib'ratan

لِّأُو۟لِى

for the owners

li-ulī

ٱلْأَبْصَـٰرِ

(of) vision

l-abṣāri

١٣

Already there has been for you a sign in the two armies which met [in combat at Badr] - one fighting in the cause of Allāh and another of disbelievers. They saw them [to be] twice their [own] number by [their] eyesight.1 But Allāh supports with His victory whom He wills. Indeed in that is a lesson for those of vision.

— Saheeh International

زُيِّنَ

Beautified

zuyyina

لِلنَّاسِ

for mankind

lilnnāsi

حُبُّ

(is) love

ḥubbu

ٱلشَّهَوَٰتِ

(of) the (things they) desire

l-shahawāti

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلنِّسَآءِ

[the] women

l-nisāi

وَٱلْبَنِينَ

and [the] sons

wal-banīna

وَٱلْقَنَـٰطِيرِ

and [the] heaps

wal-qanāṭīri

ٱلْمُقَنطَرَةِ

[the] stored up

l-muqanṭarati

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلذَّهَبِ

[the] gold

l-dhahabi

وَٱلْفِضَّةِ

and [the] silver

wal-fiḍati

وَٱلْخَيْلِ

and [the] horses

wal-khayli

ٱلْمُسَوَّمَةِ

[the] branded

l-musawamati

وَٱلْأَنْعَـٰمِ

and [the] cattle

wal-anʿāmi

وَٱلْحَرْثِ ۗ

and [the] tilled land

wal-ḥarthi

ذَٰلِكَ

That

dhālika

مَتَـٰعُ

(is) provision

matāʿu

ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ

(of) life

l-ḥayati

ٱلدُّنْيَا ۖ

(of) the world

l-dun'yā

وَٱللَّهُ

but Allah

wal-lahu

عِندَهُۥ

with Him

ʿindahu

حُسْنُ

(is an) excellent

ḥus'nu

ٱلْمَـَٔابِ

[the] abode to return

l-maābi

١٤

Beautified for people is the love of that which they desire - of women and sons, heaped-up sums of gold and silver, fine branded horses, and cattle and tilled land. That is the enjoyment of worldly life, but Allāh has with Him the best return [i.e., Paradise].

— Saheeh International

۞ قُلْ

Say

qul

أَؤُنَبِّئُكُم

Shall I inform you

a-unabbi-ukum

بِخَيْرٍۢ

of better

bikhayrin

مِّن

than

min

ذَٰلِكُمْ ۚ

that

dhālikum

لِلَّذِينَ

For those who

lilladhīna

ٱتَّقَوْا۟

fear[ed]

ittaqaw

عِندَ

with

ʿinda

رَبِّهِمْ

their Lord

rabbihim

جَنَّـٰتٌۭ

(are) Gardens

jannātun

تَجْرِى

flows

tajrī

مِن

from

min

تَحْتِهَا

underneath them

taḥtihā

ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ

[the] rivers

l-anhāru

خَـٰلِدِينَ

abiding forever

khālidīna

فِيهَا

in it

fīhā

وَأَزْوَٰجٌۭ

and spouses

wa-azwājun

مُّطَهَّرَةٌۭ

pure

muṭahharatun

وَرِضْوَٰنٌۭ

and approval

wariḍ'wānun

مِّنَ

from

mina

ٱللَّهِ ۗ

Allah

l-lahi

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

بَصِيرٌۢ

(is) All-Seer

baṣīrun

بِٱلْعِبَادِ

of (His) slaves

bil-ʿibādi

١٥

Say, "Shall I inform you of [something] better than that? For those who fear Allāh will be gardens in the presence of their Lord beneath which rivers flow, wherein they abide eternally, and purified spouses and approval from Allāh. And Allāh is Seeing [i.e., aware] of [His] servants -

— Saheeh International

ٱلَّذِينَ

Those who

alladhīna

يَقُولُونَ

say

yaqūlūna

رَبَّنَآ

Our Lord

rabbanā

إِنَّنَآ

Indeed, we

innanā

ءَامَنَّا

(have) believed

āmannā

فَٱغْفِرْ

so forgive

fa-igh'fir

لَنَا

for us

lanā

ذُنُوبَنَا

our sins

dhunūbanā

وَقِنَا

and save us

waqinā

عَذَابَ

(from) punishment

ʿadhāba

ٱلنَّارِ

(of) the Fire

l-nāri

١٦

Those who say, "Our Lord, indeed we have believed, so forgive us our sins and protect us from the punishment of the Fire,"

— Saheeh International

ٱلصَّـٰبِرِينَ

The patient

al-ṣābirīna

وَٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ

and the truthful

wal-ṣādiqīna

وَٱلْقَـٰنِتِينَ

and the obedient

wal-qānitīna

وَٱلْمُنفِقِينَ

and those who spend

wal-munfiqīna

وَٱلْمُسْتَغْفِرِينَ

and those who seek forgiveness

wal-mus'taghfirīna

بِٱلْأَسْحَارِ

[in the] before dawn

bil-asḥāri

١٧

The patient, the true, the obedient, those who spend [in the way of Allāh], and those who seek forgiveness before dawn.

— Saheeh International

شَهِدَ

Bears witness

shahida

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

أَنَّهُۥ

that [He]

annahu

لَآ

(there is) no

إِلَـٰهَ

god

ilāha

إِلَّا

except

illā

هُوَ

Him

huwa

وَٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ

and (so do) the Angels

wal-malāikatu

وَأُو۟لُوا۟

and owners

wa-ulū

ٱلْعِلْمِ

(of) [the] knowledge

l-ʿil'mi

قَآئِمًۢا

standing

qāiman

بِٱلْقِسْطِ ۚ

in justice

bil-qis'ṭi

لَآ

(There is) no

إِلَـٰهَ

god

ilāha

إِلَّا

except

illā

هُوَ

Him

huwa

ٱلْعَزِيزُ

the All-Mighty

l-ʿazīzu

ٱلْحَكِيمُ

the All-Wise

l-ḥakīmu

١٨

Allāh witnesses that there is no deity except Him, and [so do] the angels and those of knowledge - [that He is] maintaining [creation] in justice. There is no deity except Him, the Exalted in Might, the Wise.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱلدِّينَ

the religion

l-dīna

عِندَ

near

ʿinda

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

ٱلْإِسْلَـٰمُ ۗ

(is) Islam

l-is'lāmu

وَمَا

And not

wamā

ٱخْتَلَفَ

differed

ikh'talafa

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

أُوتُوا۟

were given

ūtū

ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ

the Book

l-kitāba

إِلَّا

except

illā

مِنۢ

from

min

بَعْدِ

after

baʿdi

مَا

[what]

جَآءَهُمُ

came to them

jāahumu

ٱلْعِلْمُ

[the] knowledge

l-ʿil'mu

بَغْيًۢا

out of envy

baghyan

بَيْنَهُمْ ۗ

among them

baynahum

وَمَن

And whoever

waman

يَكْفُرْ

disbelieves

yakfur

بِـَٔايَـٰتِ

in (the) Verses

biāyāti

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

فَإِنَّ

then indeed

fa-inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

سَرِيعُ

(is) swift

sarīʿu

ٱلْحِسَابِ

(in taking) account

l-ḥisābi

١٩

Indeed, the religion in the sight of Allāh is Islām. And those who were given the Scripture did not differ except after knowledge had come to them - out of jealous animosity between themselves. And whoever disbelieves in the verses of Allāh, then indeed, Allāh is swift in [taking] account.

— Saheeh International

فَإِنْ

Then if

fa-in

حَآجُّوكَ

they argue with you

ḥājjūka

فَقُلْ

then say

faqul

أَسْلَمْتُ

I have submitted

aslamtu

وَجْهِىَ

myself

wajhiya

لِلَّهِ

to Allah

lillahi

وَمَنِ

and (those) who

wamani

ٱتَّبَعَنِ ۗ

follow me

ittabaʿani

وَقُل

And say

waqul

لِّلَّذِينَ

to those who

lilladhīna

أُوتُوا۟

were given

ūtū

ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ

the Book

l-kitāba

وَٱلْأُمِّيِّـۧنَ

and the unlettered people

wal-umiyīna

ءَأَسْلَمْتُمْ ۚ

Have you submitted yourselves

a-aslamtum

فَإِنْ

Then if

fa-in

أَسْلَمُوا۟

they submit

aslamū

فَقَدِ

then surely

faqadi

ٱهْتَدَوا۟ ۖ

they are guided

ih'tadaw

وَّإِن

But if

wa-in

تَوَلَّوْا۟

they turn back

tawallaw

فَإِنَّمَا

then only

fa-innamā

عَلَيْكَ

on you

ʿalayka

ٱلْبَلَـٰغُ ۗ

(is) to [the] convey

l-balāghu

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

بَصِيرٌۢ

(is) All-Seer

baṣīrun

بِٱلْعِبَادِ

of [His] slaves

bil-ʿibādi

٢٠

So if they argue with you, say, "I have submitted myself to Allāh [in Islām], and [so have] those who follow me." And say to those who were given the Scripture and [to] the unlearned,1 "Have you submitted yourselves?" And if they submit [in Islām], they are rightly guided; but if they turn away - then upon you is only the [duty of] notification. And Allāh is Seeing of [His] servants.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

يَكْفُرُونَ

disbelieve

yakfurūna

بِـَٔايَـٰتِ

in (the) Signs (of)

biāyāti

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

وَيَقْتُلُونَ

and they kill

wayaqtulūna

ٱلنَّبِيِّـۧنَ

the Prophets

l-nabiyīna

بِغَيْرِ

without

bighayri

حَقٍّۢ

right

ḥaqqin

وَيَقْتُلُونَ

and they kill

wayaqtulūna

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

يَأْمُرُونَ

order

yamurūna

بِٱلْقِسْطِ

[with] justice

bil-qis'ṭi

مِنَ

among

mina

ٱلنَّاسِ

the people

l-nāsi

فَبَشِّرْهُم

then give them tidings

fabashir'hum

بِعَذَابٍ

of a punishment

biʿadhābin

أَلِيمٍ

painful

alīmin

٢١

Those who disbelieve in the signs of Allāh and kill the prophets without right and kill those who order justice from among the people - give them tidings of a painful punishment.

— Saheeh International

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

Those

ulāika

ٱلَّذِينَ

(are) the ones who

alladhīna

حَبِطَتْ

became worthless

ḥabiṭat

أَعْمَـٰلُهُمْ

their deeds

aʿmāluhum

فِى

in

ٱلدُّنْيَا

the world

l-dun'yā

وَٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ

and (in) the Hereafter

wal-ākhirati

وَمَا

And not

wamā

لَهُم

(will be) for them

lahum

مِّن

any

min

نَّـٰصِرِينَ

helpers

nāṣirīna

٢٢

They are the ones whose deeds have become worthless in this world and the Hereafter, and for them there will be no helpers.

— Saheeh International

أَلَمْ

Have not

alam

تَرَ

you seen

tara

إِلَى

[to]

ilā

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

أُوتُوا۟

were given

ūtū

نَصِيبًۭا

a portion

naṣīban

مِّنَ

of

mina

ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ

the Scripture

l-kitābi

يُدْعَوْنَ

They are invited

yud'ʿawna

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

كِتَـٰبِ

(the) Book

kitābi

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

لِيَحْكُمَ

that (it should) arbitrate

liyaḥkuma

بَيْنَهُمْ

between them

baynahum

ثُمَّ

then

thumma

يَتَوَلَّىٰ

turns away

yatawallā

فَرِيقٌۭ

a party

farīqun

مِّنْهُمْ

of them

min'hum

وَهُم

and they (are)

wahum

مُّعْرِضُونَ

those who are averse

muʿ'riḍūna

٢٣

Do you not consider, [O Muḥammad], those who were given a portion of the Scripture? They are invited to the Scripture of Allāh that it should arbitrate between them;1 then a party of them turns away, and they are refusing.

— Saheeh International

ذَٰلِكَ

That

dhālika

بِأَنَّهُمْ

(is) because they

bi-annahum

قَالُوا۟

say

qālū

لَن

Never

lan

تَمَسَّنَا

will touch us

tamassanā

ٱلنَّارُ

the Fire

l-nāru

إِلَّآ

except

illā

أَيَّامًۭا

(for) days

ayyāman

مَّعْدُودَٰتٍۢ ۖ

numbered

maʿdūdātin

وَغَرَّهُمْ

And deceived them

wagharrahum

فِى

in

دِينِهِم

their religion

dīnihim

مَّا

what

كَانُوا۟

they were

kānū

يَفْتَرُونَ

inventing

yaftarūna

٢٤

That is because they say, "Never will the Fire touch us except for [a few] numbered days," and [because] they were deluded in their religion by what they were inventing.

— Saheeh International

فَكَيْفَ

Then how (will it be)

fakayfa

إِذَا

when

idhā

جَمَعْنَـٰهُمْ

We will gather them

jamaʿnāhum

لِيَوْمٍۢ

on a Day

liyawmin

لَّا

no

رَيْبَ

doubt

rayba

فِيهِ

in it

fīhi

وَوُفِّيَتْ

And will be paid in full

wawuffiyat

كُلُّ

every

kullu

نَفْسٍۢ

soul

nafsin

مَّا

what

كَسَبَتْ

it earned

kasabat

وَهُمْ

and they

wahum

لَا

(will) not

يُظْلَمُونَ

be wronged

yuẓ'lamūna

٢٥

So how will it be when We assemble them for a Day about which there is no doubt? And each soul will be compensated [in full for] what it earned, and they will not be wronged.

— Saheeh International

قُلِ

Say

quli

ٱللَّهُمَّ

O Allah

l-lahuma

مَـٰلِكَ

Owner

mālika

ٱلْمُلْكِ

(of) the Dominion

l-mul'ki

تُؤْتِى

You give

tu'tī

ٱلْمُلْكَ

the dominion

l-mul'ka

مَن

(to) whom

man

تَشَآءُ

You will

tashāu

وَتَنزِعُ

and You take away

watanziʿu

ٱلْمُلْكَ

the dominion

l-mul'ka

مِمَّن

from whom

mimman

تَشَآءُ

You will

tashāu

وَتُعِزُّ

and You honor

watuʿizzu

مَن

whom

man

تَشَآءُ

You will

tashāu

وَتُذِلُّ

and You humiliate

watudhillu

مَن

whom

man

تَشَآءُ ۖ

You will

tashāu

بِيَدِكَ

In Your hand

biyadika

ٱلْخَيْرُ ۖ

(is all) the good

l-khayru

إِنَّكَ

Indeed, You

innaka

عَلَىٰ

(are) on

ʿalā

كُلِّ

every

kulli

شَىْءٍۢ

thing

shayin

قَدِيرٌۭ

All-Powerful

qadīrun

٢٦

Say, "O Allāh, Owner of Sovereignty, You give sovereignty to whom You will and You take sovereignty away from whom You will. You honor whom You will and You humble whom You will. In Your hand1 is [all] good. Indeed, You are over all things competent.

— Saheeh International

تُولِجُ

You cause to enter

tūliju

ٱلَّيْلَ

the night

al-layla

فِى

in

ٱلنَّهَارِ

the day

l-nahāri

وَتُولِجُ

and You cause to enter

watūliju

ٱلنَّهَارَ

the day

l-nahāra

فِى

in

ٱلَّيْلِ ۖ

the night

al-layli

وَتُخْرِجُ

and You bring forth

watukh'riju

ٱلْحَىَّ

the living

l-ḥaya

مِنَ

from

mina

ٱلْمَيِّتِ

the dead

l-mayiti

وَتُخْرِجُ

and You bring forth

watukh'riju

ٱلْمَيِّتَ

the dead

l-mayita

مِنَ

from

mina

ٱلْحَىِّ ۖ

the living

l-ḥayi

وَتَرْزُقُ

and You give provision

watarzuqu

مَن

(to) whom

man

تَشَآءُ

You will

tashāu

بِغَيْرِ

without

bighayri

حِسَابٍۢ

measure

ḥisābin

٢٧

You cause the night to enter the day, and You cause the day to enter the night; and You bring the living out of the dead, and You bring the dead out of the living. And You give provision to whom You will without account [i.e., limit or measure]."

— Saheeh International

لَّا

(Let) not

يَتَّخِذِ

take

yattakhidhi

ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ

the believers

l-mu'minūna

ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ

the disbelievers

l-kāfirīna

أَوْلِيَآءَ

(as) allies

awliyāa

مِن

from

min

دُونِ

instead of

dūni

ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ ۖ

the believers

l-mu'minīna

وَمَن

And whoever

waman

يَفْعَلْ

does

yafʿal

ذَٰلِكَ

that

dhālika

فَلَيْسَ

then not he (has)

falaysa

مِنَ

from

mina

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

فِى

in

شَىْءٍ

anything

shayin

إِلَّآ

except

illā

أَن

that

an

تَتَّقُوا۟

you fear

tattaqū

مِنْهُمْ

from them

min'hum

تُقَىٰةًۭ ۗ

(as) a precaution

tuqātan

وَيُحَذِّرُكُمُ

And warns you

wayuḥadhirukumu

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

نَفْسَهُۥ ۗ

(of) Himself

nafsahu

وَإِلَى

and to

wa-ilā

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

ٱلْمَصِيرُ

(is) the final return

l-maṣīru

٢٨

Let not believers take disbelievers as allies [i.e., supporters or protectors] rather than believers. And whoever [of you] does that has nothing [i.e., no association] with Allāh, except when taking precaution against them in prudence.1 And Allāh warns you of Himself, and to Allāh is the [final] destination.

— Saheeh International

Say

qul

إِن

Whether

in

تُخْفُوا۟

you conceal

tukh'fū

مَا

what

فِى

(is) in

صُدُورِكُمْ

your breasts

ṣudūrikum

أَوْ

or

aw

تُبْدُوهُ

you disclose it

tub'dūhu

يَعْلَمْهُ

knows it

yaʿlamhu

ٱللَّهُ ۗ

Allah

l-lahu

وَيَعْلَمُ

And He knows

wayaʿlamu

مَا

what

فِى

(is) in

ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ

the heavens

l-samāwāti

وَمَا

and what

wamā

فِى

(is) in

ٱلْأَرْضِ ۗ

the earth

l-arḍi

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

عَلَىٰ

(is) on

ʿalā

كُلِّ

every

kulli

شَىْءٍۢ

thing

shayin

قَدِيرٌۭ

All-Powerful

qadīrun

٢٩

Say, "Whether you conceal what is in your breasts or reveal it, Allāh knows it. And He knows that which is in the heavens and that which is on the earth. And Allāh is over all things competent.

— Saheeh International

يَوْمَ

(On the) day

yawma

تَجِدُ

will find

tajidu

كُلُّ

every

kullu

نَفْسٍۢ

soul

nafsin

مَّا

what

عَمِلَتْ

it did

ʿamilat

مِنْ

of

min

خَيْرٍۢ

good

khayrin

مُّحْضَرًۭا

presented

muḥ'ḍaran

وَمَا

and what

wamā

عَمِلَتْ

it did

ʿamilat

مِن

of

min

سُوٓءٍۢ

evil

sūin

تَوَدُّ

it will wish

tawaddu

لَوْ

[if]

law

أَنَّ

that

anna

بَيْنَهَا

between itself

baynahā

وَبَيْنَهُۥٓ

and between it (evil)

wabaynahu

أَمَدًۢا

(was) a distance

amadan

بَعِيدًۭا ۗ

great

baʿīdan

وَيُحَذِّرُكُمُ

And warns you

wayuḥadhirukumu

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

نَفْسَهُۥ ۗ

(against) Himself

nafsahu

وَٱللَّهُ

and Allah

wal-lahu

رَءُوفٌۢ

(is) Most Kind

raūfun

بِٱلْعِبَادِ

to (His) [the] slaves

bil-ʿibādi

٣٠

The Day every soul will find what it has done of good present [before it] and what it has done of evil, it will wish that between itself and that [evil] was a great distance. And Allāh warns you of Himself, and Allāh is Kind to [His] servants."

— Saheeh International

قُلْ

Say

qul

إِن

If

in

كُنتُمْ

you

kuntum

تُحِبُّونَ

love

tuḥibbūna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

فَٱتَّبِعُونِى

then follow me

fa-ittabiʿūnī

يُحْبِبْكُمُ

will love you

yuḥ'bib'kumu

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

وَيَغْفِرْ

and He will forgive

wayaghfir

لَكُمْ

for you

lakum

ذُنُوبَكُمْ ۗ

your sins

dhunūbakum

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

غَفُورٌۭ

(is) Oft-Forgiving

ghafūrun

رَّحِيمٌۭ

Most Merciful

raḥīmun

٣١

Say, [O Muḥammad], "If you should love Allāh, then follow me, [so] Allāh will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful."

— Saheeh International

قُلْ

Say

qul

أَطِيعُوا۟

Obey

aṭīʿū

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

وَٱلرَّسُولَ ۖ

and the Messenger

wal-rasūla

فَإِن

Then if

fa-in

تَوَلَّوْا۟

they turn away

tawallaw

فَإِنَّ

then indeed

fa-inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

لَا

(does) not

يُحِبُّ

love

yuḥibbu

ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ

the disbelievers

l-kāfirīna

٣٢

Say, "Obey Allāh and the Messenger. But if you turn away - then indeed, Allāh does not like the disbelievers."

— Saheeh International

۞ إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

ٱصْطَفَىٰٓ

chose

iṣ'ṭafā

ءَادَمَ

Adam

ādama

وَنُوحًۭا

and Nuh

wanūḥan

وَءَالَ

and (the) family

waāla

إِبْرَٰهِيمَ

(of) Ibrahim

ib'rāhīma

وَءَالَ

and (the) family

waāla

عِمْرَٰنَ

(of) Imran

ʿim'rāna

عَلَى

over

ʿalā

ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

the worlds

l-ʿālamīna

٣٣

Indeed, Allāh chose Adam and Noah and the family of Abraham and the family of ʿImrān over the worlds -

— Saheeh International

ذُرِّيَّةًۢ

Descendents

dhurriyyatan

بَعْضُهَا

some of them

baʿḍuhā

مِنۢ

from

min

بَعْضٍۢ ۗ

others

baʿḍin

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

سَمِيعٌ

(is) All-Hearing

samīʿun

عَلِيمٌ

All-Knowing

ʿalīmun

٣٤

Descendants, some of them from others. And Allāh is Hearing and Knowing.

— Saheeh International

إِذْ

When

idh

قَالَتِ

[she] said

qālati

ٱمْرَأَتُ

(the) wife

im'ra-atu

عِمْرَٰنَ

(of) Imran

ʿim'rāna

رَبِّ

My Lord

rabbi

إِنِّى

Indeed, I

innī

نَذَرْتُ

[I] vowed

nadhartu

لَكَ

to You

laka

مَا

what

فِى

(is) in

بَطْنِى

my womb

baṭnī

مُحَرَّرًۭا

dedicated

muḥarraran

فَتَقَبَّلْ

so accept

fataqabbal

مِنِّىٓ ۖ

from me

minnī

إِنَّكَ

Indeed, You

innaka

أَنتَ

You

anta

ٱلسَّمِيعُ

(are) the All-Hearing

l-samīʿu

ٱلْعَلِيمُ

the All-Knowing

l-ʿalīmu

٣٥

[Mention, O Muḥammad], when the wife of ʿImrān said, "My Lord, indeed I have pledged to You what is in my womb, consecrated [for Your service], so accept this from me. Indeed, You are the Hearing, the Knowing."

— Saheeh International

فَلَمَّا

Then when

falammā

وَضَعَتْهَا

she delivered her

waḍaʿathā

قَالَتْ

she said

qālat

رَبِّ

My Lord

rabbi

إِنِّى

indeed I

innī

وَضَعْتُهَآ

[I] (have) delivered [her]

waḍaʿtuhā

أُنثَىٰ

a female

unthā

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

أَعْلَمُ

knows better

aʿlamu

بِمَا

[of] what

bimā

وَضَعَتْ

she delivered

waḍaʿat

وَلَيْسَ

and is not

walaysa

ٱلذَّكَرُ

the male

l-dhakaru

كَٱلْأُنثَىٰ ۖ

like the female

kal-unthā

وَإِنِّى

And that I

wa-innī

سَمَّيْتُهَا

[I] (have) named her

sammaytuhā

مَرْيَمَ

Maryam

maryama

وَإِنِّىٓ

and that I

wa-innī

أُعِيذُهَا

[I] seek refuge for her

uʿīdhuhā

بِكَ

in You

bika

وَذُرِّيَّتَهَا

and her offspring

wadhurriyyatahā

مِنَ

from

mina

ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنِ

the Shaitaan

l-shayṭāni

ٱلرَّجِيمِ

the rejected

l-rajīmi

٣٦

But when she delivered her, she said, "My Lord, I have delivered a female." And Allāh was most knowing of what she delivered, and the male is not like the female. "And I have named her Mary, and I seek refuge for her in You and [for] her descendants from Satan, the expelled [from the mercy of Allāh]."

— Saheeh International

فَتَقَبَّلَهَا

So accepted her

fataqabbalahā

رَبُّهَا

her Lord

rabbuhā

بِقَبُولٍ

with acceptance

biqabūlin

حَسَنٍۢ

good

ḥasanin

وَأَنۢبَتَهَا

and reared her

wa-anbatahā

نَبَاتًا

a rearing

nabātan

حَسَنًۭا

good

ḥasanan

وَكَفَّلَهَا

and put her in (the) care

wakaffalahā

زَكَرِيَّا ۖ

(of) Zakariya

zakariyyā

كُلَّمَا

Whenever

kullamā

دَخَلَ

entered

dakhala

عَلَيْهَا

upon her

ʿalayhā

زَكَرِيَّا

Zakariya

zakariyyā

ٱلْمِحْرَابَ

[the] prayer chamber

l-miḥ'rāba

وَجَدَ

he found

wajada

عِندَهَا

with her

ʿindahā

رِزْقًۭا ۖ

provision

riz'qan

قَالَ

He said

qāla

يَـٰمَرْيَمُ

O Maryam

yāmaryamu

أَنَّىٰ

From where

annā

لَكِ

for you

laki

هَـٰذَا ۖ

(is) this

hādhā

قَالَتْ

She said

qālat

هُوَ

This

huwa

مِنْ

(is)

min

عِندِ

from

ʿindi

ٱللَّهِ ۖ

Allah

l-lahi

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

يَرْزُقُ

gives provision

yarzuqu

مَن

(to) whom

man

يَشَآءُ

He wills

yashāu

بِغَيْرِ

without

bighayri

حِسَابٍ

measure

ḥisābin

٣٧

So her Lord accepted her with good acceptance and caused her to grow in a good manner and put her in the care of Zechariah. Every time Zechariah entered upon her in the prayer chamber, he found with her provision. He said, "O Mary, from where is this [coming] to you?" She said, "It is from Allāh. Indeed, Allāh provides for whom He wills without account."

— Saheeh International

هُنَالِكَ

There only

hunālika

دَعَا

invoked

daʿā

زَكَرِيَّا

Zakariya

zakariyyā

رَبَّهُۥ ۖ

his Lord

rabbahu

قَالَ

he said

qāla

رَبِّ

My Lord

rabbi

هَبْ

grant

hab

لِى

[for] me

مِن

from

min

لَّدُنكَ

Yourself

ladunka

ذُرِّيَّةًۭ

offspring

dhurriyyatan

طَيِّبَةً ۖ

pure

ṭayyibatan

إِنَّكَ

Indeed, You

innaka

سَمِيعُ

(are) All-Hearer

samīʿu

ٱلدُّعَآءِ

(of) the prayer

l-duʿāi

٣٨

At that, Zechariah called upon his Lord, saying, "My Lord, grant me from Yourself a good offspring. Indeed, You are the Hearer of supplication."

— Saheeh International

فَنَادَتْهُ

Then called him

fanādathu

ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ

the Angels

l-malāikatu

وَهُوَ

when he

wahuwa

قَآئِمٌۭ

(was) standing

qāimun

يُصَلِّى

praying

yuṣallī

فِى

in

ٱلْمِحْرَابِ

the prayer chamber

l-miḥ'rābi

أَنَّ

Indeed

anna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

يُبَشِّرُكَ

gives you glad tidings

yubashiruka

بِيَحْيَىٰ

of Yahya

biyaḥyā

مُصَدِّقًۢا

confirming

muṣaddiqan

بِكَلِمَةٍۢ

[of] a Word

bikalimatin

مِّنَ

from

mina

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

وَسَيِّدًۭا

and a noble

wasayyidan

وَحَصُورًۭا

and chaste

waḥaṣūran

وَنَبِيًّۭا

and a Prophet

wanabiyyan

مِّنَ

among

mina

ٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ

the righteous

l-ṣāliḥīna

٣٩

So the angels called him while he was standing in prayer in the chamber, "Indeed, Allāh gives you good tidings of John, confirming a word1 from Allāh and [who will be] honorable, abstaining [from women], and a prophet from among the righteous."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

رَبِّ

My Lord

rabbi

أَنَّىٰ

how

annā

يَكُونُ

can (there) be

yakūnu

لِى

for me

غُلَـٰمٌۭ

a son

ghulāmun

وَقَدْ

and verily

waqad

بَلَغَنِىَ

has reached me

balaghaniya

ٱلْكِبَرُ

[the] old age

l-kibaru

وَٱمْرَأَتِى

and my wife

wa-im'ra-atī

عَاقِرٌۭ ۖ

(is) [a] barren

ʿāqirun

قَالَ

He said

qāla

كَذَٰلِكَ

Thus

kadhālika

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

يَفْعَلُ

does

yafʿalu

مَا

what

يَشَآءُ

He wills

yashāu

٤٠

He said, "My Lord, how will I have a boy when I have reached old age and my wife is barren?" He [the angel] said, "Such is Allāh; He does what He wills."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

رَبِّ

My Lord

rabbi

ٱجْعَل

make

ij'ʿal

لِّىٓ

for me

ءَايَةًۭ ۖ

a sign

āyatan

قَالَ

He said

qāla

ءَايَتُكَ

your sign

āyatuka

أَلَّا

(is) that not

allā

تُكَلِّمَ

you will speak

tukallima

ٱلنَّاسَ

(to) the people

l-nāsa

ثَلَـٰثَةَ

(for) three

thalāthata

أَيَّامٍ

days

ayyāmin

إِلَّا

except

illā

رَمْزًۭا ۗ

(with) gestures

ramzan

وَٱذْكُر

And remember

wa-udh'kur

رَّبَّكَ

your Lord

rabbaka

كَثِيرًۭا

much

kathīran

وَسَبِّحْ

and glorify (Him)

wasabbiḥ

بِٱلْعَشِىِّ

in the evening

bil-ʿashiyi

وَٱلْإِبْكَـٰرِ

and (in) the morning

wal-ib'kāri

٤١

He said, "My Lord, make for me a sign." He said, "Your sign is that you will not [be able to] speak to the people for three days except by gesture. And remember your Lord much and exalt [Him with praise] in the evening and the morning."

— Saheeh International

وَإِذْ

And when

wa-idh

قَالَتِ

said

qālati

ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ

the Angels

l-malāikatu

يَـٰمَرْيَمُ

O Maryam

yāmaryamu

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

ٱصْطَفَىٰكِ

(has) chosen you

iṣ'ṭafāki

وَطَهَّرَكِ

and purified you

waṭahharaki

وَٱصْطَفَىٰكِ

and chosen you

wa-iṣ'ṭafāki

عَلَىٰ

over

ʿalā

نِسَآءِ

(the) women

nisāi

ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

(of) the worlds

l-ʿālamīna

٤٢

And [mention] when the angels said, "O Mary, indeed Allāh has chosen you and purified you and chosen you above the women of the worlds.

— Saheeh International

يَـٰمَرْيَمُ

O Maryam

yāmaryamu

ٱقْنُتِى

Be obedient

uq'nutī

لِرَبِّكِ

to your Lord

lirabbiki

وَٱسْجُدِى

and prostrate

wa-us'judī

وَٱرْكَعِى

and bow down

wa-ir'kaʿī

مَعَ

with

maʿa

ٱلرَّٰكِعِينَ

those who bow down

l-rākiʿīna

٤٣

O Mary, be devoutly obedient to your Lord and prostrate and bow with those who bow [in prayer]."

— Saheeh International

ذَٰلِكَ

That

dhālika

مِنْ

(is) from

min

أَنۢبَآءِ

(the) news

anbāi

ٱلْغَيْبِ

(of) the unseen

l-ghaybi

نُوحِيهِ

We reveal it

nūḥīhi

إِلَيْكَ ۚ

to you

ilayka

وَمَا

And not

wamā

كُنتَ

you were

kunta

لَدَيْهِمْ

with them

ladayhim

إِذْ

when

idh

يُلْقُونَ

they cast

yul'qūna

أَقْلَـٰمَهُمْ

their pens

aqlāmahum

أَيُّهُمْ

(as to) which of them

ayyuhum

يَكْفُلُ

takes charge (of)

yakfulu

مَرْيَمَ

Maryam

maryama

وَمَا

and not

wamā

كُنتَ

you were

kunta

لَدَيْهِمْ

with them

ladayhim

إِذْ

when

idh

يَخْتَصِمُونَ

they (were) disputing

yakhtaṣimūna

٤٤

That is from the news of the unseen which We reveal to you, [O Muḥammad]. And you were not with them when they cast their pens1 as to which of them should be responsible for Mary. Nor were you with them when they disputed.

— Saheeh International

إِذْ

When

idh

قَالَتِ

said

qālati

ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ

the Angels

l-malāikatu

يَـٰمَرْيَمُ

O Maryam

yāmaryamu

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

يُبَشِّرُكِ

gives you glad tidings

yubashiruki

بِكَلِمَةٍۢ

of a word

bikalimatin

مِّنْهُ

from Him

min'hu

ٱسْمُهُ

his name

us'muhu

ٱلْمَسِيحُ

(is) the Messiah

l-masīḥu

عِيسَى

Isa

ʿīsā

ٱبْنُ

son

ub'nu

مَرْيَمَ

(of) Maryam

maryama

وَجِيهًۭا

honored

wajīhan

فِى

in

ٱلدُّنْيَا

the world

l-dun'yā

وَٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ

and (in) the Hereafter

wal-ākhirati

وَمِنَ

and of

wamina

ٱلْمُقَرَّبِينَ

those brought near (to Allah)

l-muqarabīna

٤٥

[And mention] when the angels said, "O Mary, indeed Allāh gives you good tidings of a word1 from Him, whose name will be the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary - distinguished in this world and the Hereafter and among those brought near [to Allāh].

— Saheeh International

وَيُكَلِّمُ

And he will speak

wayukallimu

ٱلنَّاسَ

(to) the people

l-nāsa

فِى

in

ٱلْمَهْدِ

the cradle

l-mahdi

وَكَهْلًۭا

and (in) maturity

wakahlan

وَمِنَ

and (he will be) of

wamina

ٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ

the righteous

l-ṣāliḥīna

٤٦

He will speak to the people in the cradle and in maturity and will be of the righteous."

— Saheeh International

قَالَتْ

She said

qālat

رَبِّ

My Lord

rabbi

أَنَّىٰ

how

annā

يَكُونُ

is [it]

yakūnu

لِى

for me

وَلَدٌۭ

a boy

waladun

وَلَمْ

and (has) not

walam

يَمْسَسْنِى

touch(ed) me

yamsasnī

بَشَرٌۭ ۖ

any man

basharun

قَالَ

He said

qāla

كَذَٰلِكِ

Thus

kadhāliki

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

يَخْلُقُ

creates

yakhluqu

مَا

what

يَشَآءُ ۚ

He wills

yashāu

إِذَا

When

idhā

قَضَىٰٓ

He decrees

qaḍā

أَمْرًۭا

a matter

amran

فَإِنَّمَا

then only

fa-innamā

يَقُولُ

He says

yaqūlu

لَهُۥ

to it

lahu

كُن

Be

kun

فَيَكُونُ

and it becomes

fayakūnu

٤٧

She said, "My Lord, how will I have a child when no man has touched me?" [The angel] said, "Such is Allāh; He creates what He wills. When He decrees a matter, He only says to it, 'Be,' and it is.

— Saheeh International

وَيُعَلِّمُهُ

And He will teach him

wayuʿallimuhu

ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ

the Book

l-kitāba

وَٱلْحِكْمَةَ

and [the] wisdom

wal-ḥik'mata

وَٱلتَّوْرَىٰةَ

and the Taurat

wal-tawrāta

وَٱلْإِنجِيلَ

and the Injeel

wal-injīla

٤٨

And He will teach him writing and wisdom1 and the Torah and the Gospel

— Saheeh International

وَرَسُولًا

And (make him) a Messenger

warasūlan

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

بَنِىٓ

(the) Children

banī

إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ

(of) Israel

is'rāīla

أَنِّى

Indeed, I

annī

قَدْ

[surely]

qad

جِئْتُكُم

[I] (have) come (to) you

ji'tukum

بِـَٔايَةٍۢ

with a sign

biāyatin

مِّن

from

min

رَّبِّكُمْ ۖ

your Lord

rabbikum

أَنِّىٓ

that I

annī

أَخْلُقُ

[I] design

akhluqu

لَكُم

for you

lakum

مِّنَ

from

mina

ٱلطِّينِ

[the] clay

l-ṭīni

كَهَيْـَٔةِ

like the form

kahayati

ٱلطَّيْرِ

(of) the bird

l-ṭayri

فَأَنفُخُ

then I breath

fa-anfukhu

فِيهِ

into it

fīhi

فَيَكُونُ

and it becomes

fayakūnu

طَيْرًۢا

a bird

ṭayran

بِإِذْنِ

by (the) permission

bi-idh'ni

ٱللَّهِ ۖ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

وَأُبْرِئُ

And I cure

wa-ub'ri-u

ٱلْأَكْمَهَ

the blind

l-akmaha

وَٱلْأَبْرَصَ

and the leper

wal-abraṣa

وَأُحْىِ

and I give life

wa-uḥ'yī

ٱلْمَوْتَىٰ

(to) the dead

l-mawtā

بِإِذْنِ

by (the) permission

bi-idh'ni

ٱللَّهِ ۖ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

وَأُنَبِّئُكُم

And I inform you

wa-unabbi-ukum

بِمَا

of what

bimā

تَأْكُلُونَ

you eat

takulūna

وَمَا

and what

wamā

تَدَّخِرُونَ

you store

taddakhirūna

فِى

in

بُيُوتِكُمْ ۚ

your houses

buyūtikum

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

فِى

in

ذَٰلِكَ

that

dhālika

لَـَٔايَةًۭ

(is) surely a sign

laāyatan

لَّكُمْ

for you

lakum

إِن

if

in

كُنتُم

you are

kuntum

مُّؤْمِنِينَ

believers

mu'minīna

٤٩

And [make him] a messenger to the Children of Israel, [who will say], 'Indeed I have come to you with a sign from your Lord in that I design for you from clay [that which is] like the form of a bird, then I breathe into it and it becomes a bird by permission of Allāh. And I cure the blind [from birth] and the leper, and I give life to the dead - by permission of Allāh. And I inform you of what you eat and what you store in your houses. Indeed in that is a sign for you, if you are believers.

— Saheeh International

وَمُصَدِّقًۭا

And confirming

wamuṣaddiqan

لِّمَا

that which

limā

بَيْنَ

(was)

bayna

يَدَىَّ

before me

yadayya

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلتَّوْرَىٰةِ

the Taurat

l-tawrāti

وَلِأُحِلَّ

and so that I make lawful

wali-uḥilla

لَكُم

for you

lakum

بَعْضَ

some

baʿḍa

ٱلَّذِى

(of) that which

alladhī

حُرِّمَ

was forbidden

ḥurrima

عَلَيْكُمْ ۚ

to you

ʿalaykum

وَجِئْتُكُم

And I (have) come to you

waji'tukum

بِـَٔايَةٍۢ

with a sign

biāyatin

مِّن

from

min

رَّبِّكُمْ

your Lord

rabbikum

فَٱتَّقُوا۟

So fear

fa-ittaqū

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

وَأَطِيعُونِ

and obey me

wa-aṭīʿūni

٥٠

And [I have come] confirming what was before me of the Torah and to make lawful for you some of what was forbidden to you. And I have come to you with a sign from your Lord, so fear Allāh and obey me.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

رَبِّى

(is) my Lord

rabbī

وَرَبُّكُمْ

and your Lord

warabbukum

فَٱعْبُدُوهُ ۗ

so worship Him

fa-uʿ'budūhu

هَـٰذَا

This

hādhā

صِرَٰطٌۭ

(is) the path

ṣirāṭun

مُّسْتَقِيمٌۭ

straight

mus'taqīmun

٥١

Indeed, Allāh is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him. That is the straight path.'"

— Saheeh International

۞ فَلَمَّآ

Then when

falammā

أَحَسَّ

perceived

aḥassa

عِيسَىٰ

Isa

ʿīsā

مِنْهُمُ

from them

min'humu

ٱلْكُفْرَ

[the] disbelief

l-kuf'ra

قَالَ

he said

qāla

مَنْ

Who

man

أَنصَارِىٓ

(will be) my helpers

anṣārī

إِلَى

to

ilā

ٱللَّهِ ۖ

Allah

l-lahi

قَالَ

Said

qāla

ٱلْحَوَارِيُّونَ

the disciples

l-ḥawāriyūna

نَحْنُ

We

naḥnu

أَنصَارُ

(will be the) helpers

anṣāru

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

ءَامَنَّا

we believe[d]

āmannā

بِٱللَّهِ

in Allah

bil-lahi

وَٱشْهَدْ

and bear witness

wa-ish'had

بِأَنَّا

that we

bi-annā

مُسْلِمُونَ

(are) Muslims

mus'limūna

٥٢

But when Jesus felt [persistence in] disbelief from them, he said, "Who are my supporters for [the cause of] Allāh?" The disciples said, "We are supporters for Allāh. We have believed in Allāh and testify that we are Muslims [submitting to Him].

— Saheeh International

رَبَّنَآ

Our Lord

rabbanā

ءَامَنَّا

we believe[d]

āmannā

بِمَآ

in what

bimā

أَنزَلْتَ

You revealed

anzalta

وَٱتَّبَعْنَا

and we follow[ed]

wa-ittabaʿnā

ٱلرَّسُولَ

the Messenger

l-rasūla

فَٱكْتُبْنَا

then write us

fa-uk'tub'nā

مَعَ

among

maʿa

ٱلشَّـٰهِدِينَ

the witnesses

l-shāhidīna

٥٣

Our Lord, we have believed in what You revealed and have followed the messenger [i.e., Jesus], so register us among the witnesses [to truth]."

— Saheeh International

وَمَكَرُوا۟

And they schemed

wamakarū

وَمَكَرَ

and planned

wamakara

ٱللَّهُ ۖ

Allah

l-lahu

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

خَيْرُ

(is the) best

khayru

ٱلْمَـٰكِرِينَ

(of) the planners

l-mākirīna

٥٤

And they [i.e., the disbelievers] planned, but Allāh planned. And Allāh is the best of planners.

— Saheeh International

إِذْ

When

idh

قَالَ

said

qāla

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

يَـٰعِيسَىٰٓ

O Isa

yāʿīsā

إِنِّى

Indeed, I

innī

مُتَوَفِّيكَ

(will) take you

mutawaffīka

وَرَافِعُكَ

and raise you

warāfiʿuka

إِلَىَّ

to Myself

ilayya

وَمُطَهِّرُكَ

and purify you

wamuṭahhiruka

مِنَ

from

mina

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

كَفَرُوا۟

disbelieve[d]

kafarū

وَجَاعِلُ

and I will make

wajāʿilu

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

ٱتَّبَعُوكَ

follow[ed] you

ittabaʿūka

فَوْقَ

superior

fawqa

ٱلَّذِينَ

(to) those who

alladhīna

كَفَرُوٓا۟

disbelieve[d]

kafarū

إِلَىٰ

on

ilā

يَوْمِ

(the) Day

yawmi

ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ ۖ

(of) [the] Resurrection

l-qiyāmati

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

إِلَىَّ

to Me

ilayya

مَرْجِعُكُمْ

(is) your return

marjiʿukum

فَأَحْكُمُ

and I will judge

fa-aḥkumu

بَيْنَكُمْ

between you

baynakum

فِيمَا

about what

fīmā

كُنتُمْ

you were

kuntum

فِيهِ

[in it]

fīhi

تَخْتَلِفُونَ

differing

takhtalifūna

٥٥

[Mention] when Allāh said, "O Jesus, indeed I will take you and raise you to Myself and purify [i.e., free] you from those who disbelieve and make those who follow you [in submission to Allāh alone] superior to those who disbelieve until the Day of Resurrection. Then to Me is your return, and I will judge between you concerning that in which you used to differ.

— Saheeh International

فَأَمَّا

Then as for

fa-ammā

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

كَفَرُوا۟

disbelieve[d]

kafarū

فَأُعَذِّبُهُمْ

then I will punish them

fa-uʿadhibuhum

عَذَابًۭا

(with) a punishment

ʿadhāban

شَدِيدًۭا

severe

shadīdan

فِى

in

ٱلدُّنْيَا

the world

l-dun'yā

وَٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ

and (in) the Hereafter

wal-ākhirati

وَمَا

And not

wamā

لَهُم

for them

lahum

مِّن

any

min

نَّـٰصِرِينَ

helpers

nāṣirīna

٥٦

And as for those who disbelieved, I will punish them with a severe punishment in this world and the Hereafter, and they will have no helpers."

— Saheeh International

وَأَمَّا

And as for

wa-ammā

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

ءَامَنُوا۟

believe[d]

āmanū

وَعَمِلُوا۟

and did

waʿamilū

ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ

[the] righteous deeds

l-ṣāliḥāti

فَيُوَفِّيهِمْ

then He will grant them in full

fayuwaffīhim

أُجُورَهُمْ ۗ

their reward

ujūrahum

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

لَا

(does) not

يُحِبُّ

love

yuḥibbu

ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ

the wrongdoers

l-ẓālimīna

٥٧

But as for those who believed and did righteous deeds, He will give them in full their rewards, and Allāh does not like the wrongdoers.

— Saheeh International

ذَٰلِكَ

That

dhālika

نَتْلُوهُ

(is what) We recite [it]

natlūhu

عَلَيْكَ

to you

ʿalayka

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلْـَٔايَـٰتِ

the Verses

l-āyāti

وَٱلذِّكْرِ

and the Reminder

wal-dhik'ri

ٱلْحَكِيمِ

[the] Wise

l-ḥakīmi

٥٨

This is what We recite to you, [O Muḥammad], of [Our] verses and the precise [and wise] message [i.e., the Qur’ān].

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

مَثَلَ

(the) likeness

mathala

عِيسَىٰ

(of) Isa

ʿīsā

عِندَ

near

ʿinda

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

كَمَثَلِ

(is) like (the) likeness

kamathali

ءَادَمَ ۖ

(of) Adam

ādama

خَلَقَهُۥ

He created him

khalaqahu

مِن

from

min

تُرَابٍۢ

dust

turābin

ثُمَّ

then

thumma

قَالَ

He said

qāla

لَهُۥ

to him

lahu

كُن

Be

kun

فَيَكُونُ

and he was

fayakūnu

٥٩

Indeed, the example of Jesus to Allāh1 is like that of Adam. He created him from dust; then He said to him, "Be," and he was.

— Saheeh International

ٱلْحَقُّ

The truth

al-ḥaqu

مِن

(is) from

min

رَّبِّكَ

your Lord

rabbika

فَلَا

so (do) not

falā

تَكُن

be

takun

مِّنَ

among

mina

ٱلْمُمْتَرِينَ

the doubters

l-mum'tarīna

٦٠

The truth is from your Lord, so do not be among the doubters.

— Saheeh International

فَمَنْ

Then whoever

faman

حَآجَّكَ

argues (with) you

ḥājjaka

فِيهِ

concerning it

fīhi

مِنۢ

from

min

بَعْدِ

after

baʿdi

مَا

what

جَآءَكَ

came to you

jāaka

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلْعِلْمِ

the knowledge

l-ʿil'mi

فَقُلْ

then say

faqul

تَعَالَوْا۟

Come

taʿālaw

نَدْعُ

let us call

nadʿu

أَبْنَآءَنَا

our sons

abnāanā

وَأَبْنَآءَكُمْ

and your sons

wa-abnāakum

وَنِسَآءَنَا

and our women

wanisāanā

وَنِسَآءَكُمْ

and your women

wanisāakum

وَأَنفُسَنَا

and ourselves

wa-anfusanā

وَأَنفُسَكُمْ

and yourselves

wa-anfusakum

ثُمَّ

then

thumma

نَبْتَهِلْ

let us pray humbly

nabtahil

فَنَجْعَل

and [we] invoke

fanajʿal

لَّعْنَتَ

the curse

laʿnata

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

عَلَى

on

ʿalā

ٱلْكَـٰذِبِينَ

the liars

l-kādhibīna

٦١

Then whoever argues with you about it after [this] knowledge has come to you - say, "Come, let us call our sons and your sons, our women and your women, ourselves and yourselves, then supplicate earnestly [together] and invoke the curse of Allāh upon the liars [among us]."

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

هَـٰذَا

this

hādhā

لَهُوَ

surely it (is)

lahuwa

ٱلْقَصَصُ

the narration

l-qaṣaṣu

ٱلْحَقُّ ۚ

[the] true

l-ḥaqu

وَمَا

And (there is) no

wamā

مِنْ

(of)

min

إِلَـٰهٍ

god

ilāhin

إِلَّا

except

illā

ٱللَّهُ ۚ

Allah

l-lahu

وَإِنَّ

And indeed

wa-inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

لَهُوَ

surely He

lahuwa

ٱلْعَزِيزُ

(is) the All-Mighty

l-ʿazīzu

ٱلْحَكِيمُ

the All-Wise

l-ḥakīmu

٦٢

Indeed, this is the true narration. And there is no deity except Allāh. And indeed, Allāh is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.

— Saheeh International

فَإِن

And if

fa-in

تَوَلَّوْا۟

they turn back

tawallaw

فَإِنَّ

then indeed

fa-inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

عَلِيمٌۢ

(is) All-Knowing

ʿalīmun

بِٱلْمُفْسِدِينَ

of the corrupters

bil-muf'sidīna

٦٣

But if they turn away, then indeed - Allāh is Knowing of the corrupters.

— Saheeh International

قُلْ

Say

qul

يَـٰٓأَهْلَ

O People

yāahla

ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ

(of) the Book

l-kitābi

تَعَالَوْا۟

Come

taʿālaw

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

كَلِمَةٍۢ

a word

kalimatin

سَوَآءٍۭ

equitable

sawāin

بَيْنَنَا

between us

baynanā

وَبَيْنَكُمْ

and between you

wabaynakum

أَلَّا

that not

allā

نَعْبُدَ

we worship

naʿbuda

إِلَّا

except

illā

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

وَلَا

and not

walā

نُشْرِكَ

we associate partners

nush'rika

بِهِۦ

with Him

bihi

شَيْـًۭٔا

anything

shayan

وَلَا

and not

walā

يَتَّخِذَ

take

yattakhidha

بَعْضُنَا

some of us

baʿḍunā

بَعْضًا

(to) others

baʿḍan

أَرْبَابًۭا

(as) lords

arbāban

مِّن

from

min

دُونِ

besides

dūni

ٱللَّهِ ۚ

Allah

l-lahi

فَإِن

Then if

fa-in

تَوَلَّوْا۟

they turn away

tawallaw

فَقُولُوا۟

then say

faqūlū

ٱشْهَدُوا۟

Bear witness

ish'hadū

بِأَنَّا

that we

bi-annā

مُسْلِمُونَ

(are) Muslims

mus'limūna

٦٤

Say, "O People of the Scripture, come to a word that is equitable between us and you - that we will not worship except Allāh and not associate anything with Him and not take one another as lords instead of Allāh."1 But if they turn away, then say, "Bear witness that we are Muslims [submitting to Him]."

— Saheeh International

يَـٰٓأَهْلَ

O People

yāahla

ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ

(of) the Book

l-kitābi

لِمَ

Why

lima

تُحَآجُّونَ

(do) you argue

tuḥājjūna

فِىٓ

concerning

إِبْرَٰهِيمَ

Ibrahim

ib'rāhīma

وَمَآ

while not

wamā

أُنزِلَتِ

was revealed

unzilati

ٱلتَّوْرَىٰةُ

the Taurat

l-tawrātu

وَٱلْإِنجِيلُ

and the Injeel

wal-injīlu

إِلَّا

except

illā

مِنۢ

from

min

بَعْدِهِۦٓ ۚ

after him

baʿdihi

أَفَلَا

Then why don't

afalā

تَعْقِلُونَ

you use your intellect

taʿqilūna

٦٥

O People of the Scripture, why do you argue about Abraham while the Torah and the Gospel were not revealed until after him? Then will you not reason?

— Saheeh International

هَـٰٓأَنتُمْ

Here you are

hāantum

هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ

those who

عِلْمٌۭ

(have some) knowledge

ʿil'mun

فَلِمَ

Then why

falima

تُحَآجُّونَ

(do) you argue

tuḥājjūna

فِيمَا

about what

fīmā

لَيْسَ

not

laysa

لَكُم

for you

lakum

بِهِۦ

of it

bihi

عِلْمٌۭ ۚ

(any) knowledge

ʿil'mun

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

يَعْلَمُ

knows

yaʿlamu

وَأَنتُمْ

while you

wa-antum

لَا

(do) not

تَعْلَمُونَ

know

taʿlamūna

٦٦

Here you are - those who have argued about that of which you have [some] knowledge, but why do you argue about that of which you have no knowledge? And Allāh knows, while you know not.

— Saheeh International

مَا

Not

كَانَ

was

kāna

إِبْرَٰهِيمُ

Ibrahim

ib'rāhīmu

يَهُودِيًّۭا

a Jew

yahūdiyyan

وَلَا

and not

walā

نَصْرَانِيًّۭا

a Christian

naṣrāniyyan

وَلَـٰكِن

[and] but

walākin

كَانَ

he was

kāna

حَنِيفًۭا

a true

ḥanīfan

مُّسْلِمًۭا

Muslim

mus'liman

وَمَا

and not

wamā

كَانَ

he was

kāna

مِنَ

from

mina

ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ

the polytheists

l-mush'rikīna

٦٧

Abraham was neither a Jew nor a Christian, but he was one inclining toward truth, a Muslim [submitting to Allāh]. And he was not of the polytheists.1

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

أَوْلَى

the best to claim relationship

awlā

ٱلنَّاسِ

(of) people

l-nāsi

بِإِبْرَٰهِيمَ

with Ibrahim

bi-ib'rāhīma

لَلَّذِينَ

(are) those who

lalladhīna

ٱتَّبَعُوهُ

follow him

ittabaʿūhu

وَهَـٰذَا

and this

wahādhā

ٱلنَّبِىُّ

[the] Prophet

l-nabiyu

وَٱلَّذِينَ

and those who

wa-alladhīna

ءَامَنُوا۟ ۗ

believe[d]

āmanū

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

وَلِىُّ

(is) a Guardian

waliyyu

ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

(of) the believers

l-mu'minīna

٦٨

Indeed, the most worthy of Abraham among the people are those who followed him [in submission to Allāh] and this prophet [i.e., Muḥammad (ﷺ)] and those who believe [in his message]. And Allāh is the Ally1 of the believers.

— Saheeh International

وَدَّت

Wished

waddat

طَّآئِفَةٌۭ

a group

ṭāifatun

مِّنْ

from

min

أَهْلِ

(the) People

ahli

ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ

(of) the Book

l-kitābi

لَوْ

if

law

يُضِلُّونَكُمْ

they could lead you astray

yuḍillūnakum

وَمَا

and not

wamā

يُضِلُّونَ

they lead astray

yuḍillūna

إِلَّآ

except

illā

أَنفُسَهُمْ

themselves

anfusahum

وَمَا

and not

wamā

يَشْعُرُونَ

they perceive

yashʿurūna

٦٩

A faction of the People of the Scripture wish they could mislead you. But they do not mislead except themselves, and they perceive [it] not.

— Saheeh International

يَـٰٓأَهْلَ

O People

yāahla

ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ

(of) the Book

l-kitābi

لِمَ

Why do

lima

تَكْفُرُونَ

you deny

takfurūna

بِـَٔايَـٰتِ

[in] the Signs

biāyāti

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

وَأَنتُمْ

while you

wa-antum

تَشْهَدُونَ

bear witness

tashhadūna

٧٠

O People of the Scripture, why do you disbelieve in the verses of Allāh1 while you witness [to their truth]?

— Saheeh International

يَـٰٓأَهْلَ

O People

yāahla

ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ

(of) the Book

l-kitābi

لِمَ

Why

lima

تَلْبِسُونَ

do you mix

talbisūna

ٱلْحَقَّ

the truth

l-ḥaqa

بِٱلْبَـٰطِلِ

with the falsehood

bil-bāṭili

وَتَكْتُمُونَ

and conceal

wataktumūna

ٱلْحَقَّ

the truth

l-ḥaqa

وَأَنتُمْ

while you

wa-antum

تَعْلَمُونَ

know

taʿlamūna

٧١

O People of the Scripture, why do you mix [i.e., confuse] the truth with falsehood and conceal the truth while you know [it]?

— Saheeh International

وَقَالَت

And said

waqālat

طَّآئِفَةٌۭ

a group

ṭāifatun

مِّنْ

of

min

أَهْلِ

(the) People

ahli

ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ

(of) the Book

l-kitābi

ءَامِنُوا۟

Believe

āminū

بِٱلَّذِىٓ

in what

bi-alladhī

أُنزِلَ

was revealed

unzila

عَلَى

on

ʿalā

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

ءَامَنُوا۟

believe[d]

āmanū

وَجْهَ

(at the) beginning

wajha

ٱلنَّهَارِ

(of) the day

l-nahāri

وَٱكْفُرُوٓا۟

and reject

wa-uk'furū

ءَاخِرَهُۥ

(at) its end

ākhirahu

لَعَلَّهُمْ

perhaps they may

laʿallahum

يَرْجِعُونَ

return

yarjiʿūna

٧٢

And a faction of the People of the Scripture say [to each other], "Believe in that which was revealed to the believers at the beginning of the day and reject it at its end that perhaps they will return [i.e., abandon their religion],

— Saheeh International

وَلَا

And (do) not

walā

تُؤْمِنُوٓا۟

believe

tu'minū

إِلَّا

except

illā

لِمَن

(the one) who

liman

تَبِعَ

follows

tabiʿa

دِينَكُمْ

your religion

dīnakum

قُلْ

Say

qul

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱلْهُدَىٰ

the (true) guidance

l-hudā

هُدَى

(is the) Guidance

hudā

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

أَن

lest

an

يُؤْتَىٰٓ

is given

yu'tā

أَحَدٌۭ

(to) one

aḥadun

مِّثْلَ

(the) like

mith'la

مَآ

(of) what

أُوتِيتُمْ

was given to you

ūtītum

أَوْ

or

aw

يُحَآجُّوكُمْ

they may argue with you

yuḥājjūkum

عِندَ

near

ʿinda

رَبِّكُمْ ۗ

your Lord

rabbikum

قُلْ

Say

qul

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱلْفَضْلَ

the Bounty

l-faḍla

بِيَدِ

(is) in the Hand

biyadi

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

يُؤْتِيهِ

He gives it

yu'tīhi

مَن

(to) whom

man

يَشَآءُ ۗ

He wills

yashāu

وَٱللَّهُ

and Allah

wal-lahu

وَٰسِعٌ

(is) All-Encompassing

wāsiʿun

عَلِيمٌۭ

All-Knowing

ʿalīmun

٧٣

And do not trust except those who follow your religion." Say, "Indeed, the [true] guidance is the guidance of Allāh. [Do you fear] lest someone be given [knowledge] like you were given or that they would [thereby] argue with you before your Lord?" Say, "Indeed, [all] bounty is in the hand1 of Allāh - He grants it to whom He wills. And Allāh is all-Encompassing and Wise."

— Saheeh International

يَخْتَصُّ

He chooses

yakhtaṣṣu

بِرَحْمَتِهِۦ

for His Mercy

biraḥmatihi

مَن

whom

man

يَشَآءُ ۗ

He wills

yashāu

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

ذُو

(is) the Possessor

dhū

ٱلْفَضْلِ

(of) Bounty

l-faḍli

ٱلْعَظِيمِ

[the] great

l-ʿaẓīmi

٧٤

He selects for His mercy whom He wills. And Allāh is the possessor of great bounty.

— Saheeh International

۞ وَمِنْ

And from

wamin

أَهْلِ

(the) People

ahli

ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ

(of) the Book

l-kitābi

مَنْ

(is he) who

man

إِن

if

in

تَأْمَنْهُ

you entrust him

tamanhu

بِقِنطَارٍۢ

with a great amount of wealth

biqinṭārin

يُؤَدِّهِۦٓ

he will return it

yu-addihi

إِلَيْكَ

to you

ilayka

وَمِنْهُم

And from them

wamin'hum

مَّنْ

(is he) who

man

إِن

if

in

تَأْمَنْهُ

you entrust him

tamanhu

بِدِينَارٍۢ

with a single coin

bidīnārin

لَّا

not

يُؤَدِّهِۦٓ

he will return it

yu-addihi

إِلَيْكَ

to you

ilayka

إِلَّا

except

illā

مَا

that

دُمْتَ

you keep constantly

dum'ta

عَلَيْهِ

over him

ʿalayhi

قَآئِمًۭا ۗ

standing

qāiman

ذَٰلِكَ

That

dhālika

بِأَنَّهُمْ

(is) because they

bi-annahum

قَالُوا۟

said

qālū

لَيْسَ

Not

laysa

عَلَيْنَا

on us

ʿalaynā

فِى

concerning

ٱلْأُمِّيِّـۧنَ

the unlettered people

l-umiyīna

سَبِيلٌۭ

any [way] (accountability)

sabīlun

وَيَقُولُونَ

And they say

wayaqūlūna

عَلَى

about

ʿalā

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

ٱلْكَذِبَ

the lie

l-kadhiba

وَهُمْ

while they

wahum

يَعْلَمُونَ

know

yaʿlamūna

٧٥

And among the People of the Scripture is he who, if you entrust him with a great amount [of wealth], he will return it to you. And among them is he who, if you entrust him with a [single] coin, he will not return it to you unless you are constantly standing over him [demanding it]. That is because they say, "There is no blame upon us concerning the unlearned."1 And they speak untruth about Allāh while they know [it].

— Saheeh International

بَلَىٰ

Nay

balā

مَنْ

whoever

man

أَوْفَىٰ

fulfills

awfā

بِعَهْدِهِۦ

his covenant

biʿahdihi

وَٱتَّقَىٰ

and fears (Allah)

wa-ittaqā

فَإِنَّ

then indeed

fa-inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

يُحِبُّ

loves

yuḥibbu

ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ

those who fear (Him)

l-mutaqīna

٧٦

But yes, whoever fulfills his commitment and fears Allāh - then indeed, Allāh loves those who fear Him.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

يَشْتَرُونَ

exchange

yashtarūna

بِعَهْدِ

(the) Covenant

biʿahdi

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

وَأَيْمَـٰنِهِمْ

and their oaths

wa-aymānihim

ثَمَنًۭا

(for) a price

thamanan

قَلِيلًا

little

qalīlan

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

those

ulāika

لَا

no

خَلَـٰقَ

share

khalāqa

لَهُمْ

for them

lahum

فِى

in

ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ

the Hereafter

l-ākhirati

وَلَا

and not

walā

يُكَلِّمُهُمُ

will speak to them

yukallimuhumu

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

وَلَا

and not

walā

يَنظُرُ

look

yanẓuru

إِلَيْهِمْ

at them

ilayhim

يَوْمَ

(on the) Day

yawma

ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ

(of) the Resurrection

l-qiyāmati

وَلَا

and not

walā

يُزَكِّيهِمْ

purify them

yuzakkīhim

وَلَهُمْ

and for them

walahum

عَذَابٌ

(is) a punishment

ʿadhābun

أَلِيمٌۭ

painful

alīmun

٧٧

Indeed, those who exchange the covenant of Allāh and their [own] oaths for a small price will have no share in the Hereafter, and Allāh will not speak to them or look at them on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He purify them; and they will have a painful punishment.

— Saheeh International

وَإِنَّ

And indeed

wa-inna

مِنْهُمْ

among them

min'hum

لَفَرِيقًۭا

surely (is) a group

lafarīqan

يَلْوُۥنَ

they distort

yalwūna

أَلْسِنَتَهُم

their tongues

alsinatahum

بِٱلْكِتَـٰبِ

in (reciting) the Book

bil-kitābi

لِتَحْسَبُوهُ

so that you may think it

litaḥsabūhu

مِنَ

(is) from

mina

ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ

the Book

l-kitābi

وَمَا

and not

wamā

هُوَ

it

huwa

مِنَ

(is) from

mina

ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ

the Book

l-kitābi

وَيَقُولُونَ

And they say

wayaqūlūna

هُوَ

It

huwa

مِنْ

(is)

min

عِندِ

from

ʿindi

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

وَمَا

But not

wamā

هُوَ

it

huwa

مِنْ

(is)

min

عِندِ

from

ʿindi

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

وَيَقُولُونَ

And they say

wayaqūlūna

عَلَى

about

ʿalā

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

ٱلْكَذِبَ

the lie

l-kadhiba

وَهُمْ

while they

wahum

يَعْلَمُونَ

know

yaʿlamūna

٧٨

And indeed, there is among them a party who alter the Scripture with their tongues so you may think it is from the Scripture, but it is not from the Scripture. And they say, "This is from Allāh," but it is not from Allāh. And they speak untruth about Allāh while they know.

— Saheeh International

مَا

Not

كَانَ

is

kāna

لِبَشَرٍ

for a human

libasharin

أَن

that

an

يُؤْتِيَهُ

gives him

yu'tiyahu

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ

the Book

l-kitāba

وَٱلْحُكْمَ

and the wisdom

wal-ḥuk'ma

وَٱلنُّبُوَّةَ

and the Prophethood

wal-nubuwata

ثُمَّ

then

thumma

يَقُولَ

he says

yaqūla

لِلنَّاسِ

to the people

lilnnāsi

كُونُوا۟

Be

kūnū

عِبَادًۭا

worshippers

ʿibādan

لِّى

of me

مِن

from

min

دُونِ

besides

dūni

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

وَلَـٰكِن

but (would say)

walākin

كُونُوا۟

Be

kūnū

رَبَّـٰنِيِّـۧنَ

worshippers of the Lord

rabbāniyyīna

بِمَا

because

bimā

كُنتُمْ

you have been

kuntum

تُعَلِّمُونَ

teaching

tuʿallimūna

ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ

the Book

l-kitāba

وَبِمَا

and because

wabimā

كُنتُمْ

you have been

kuntum

تَدْرُسُونَ

studying (it)

tadrusūna

٧٩

It is not for a human [prophet]1 that Allāh should give him the Scripture2 and authority and prophethood and then he would say to the people, "Be servants to me rather than Allāh," but [instead, he would say], "Be pious scholars of the Lord because of what you have taught of the Scripture and because of what you have studied."

— Saheeh International

وَلَا

And not

walā

يَأْمُرَكُمْ

he will order you

yamurakum

أَن

that

an

تَتَّخِذُوا۟

you take

tattakhidhū

ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةَ

the Angels

l-malāikata

وَٱلنَّبِيِّـۧنَ

and the Prophets

wal-nabiyīna

أَرْبَابًا ۗ

(as) lords

arbāban

أَيَأْمُرُكُم

Would he order you

ayamurukum

بِٱلْكُفْرِ

to [the] disbelief

bil-kuf'ri

بَعْدَ

after

baʿda

إِذْ

[when]

idh

أَنتُم

you (have become)

antum

مُّسْلِمُونَ

Muslims

mus'limūna

٨٠

Nor could he order you to take the angels and prophets as lords. Would he order you to disbelief after you had been Muslims?

— Saheeh International

وَإِذْ

And when

wa-idh

أَخَذَ

took

akhadha

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

مِيثَـٰقَ

covenant

mīthāqa

ٱلنَّبِيِّـۧنَ

(of) the Prophets

l-nabiyīna

لَمَآ

Certainly, whatever

lamā

ءَاتَيْتُكُم

I (have) given you

ātaytukum

مِّن

of

min

كِتَـٰبٍۢ

(the) Book

kitābin

وَحِكْمَةٍۢ

and wisdom

waḥik'matin

ثُمَّ

then

thumma

جَآءَكُمْ

comes to you

jāakum

رَسُولٌۭ

a Messenger

rasūlun

مُّصَدِّقٌۭ

confirming

muṣaddiqun

لِّمَا

that which

limā

مَعَكُمْ

(is) with you

maʿakum

لَتُؤْمِنُنَّ

you must believe

latu'minunna

بِهِۦ

in him

bihi

وَلَتَنصُرُنَّهُۥ ۚ

and you must help him

walatanṣurunnahu

قَالَ

He said

qāla

ءَأَقْرَرْتُمْ

Do you affirm

a-aqrartum

وَأَخَذْتُمْ

and take

wa-akhadhtum

عَلَىٰ

on

ʿalā

ذَٰلِكُمْ

that (condition)

dhālikum

إِصْرِى ۖ

My Covenant

iṣ'rī

قَالُوٓا۟

They said

qālū

أَقْرَرْنَا ۚ

We affirm

aqrarnā

قَالَ

He said

qāla

فَٱشْهَدُوا۟

Then bear witness

fa-ish'hadū

وَأَنَا۠

and I (am)

wa-anā

مَعَكُم

with you

maʿakum

مِّنَ

among

mina

ٱلشَّـٰهِدِينَ

the witnesses

l-shāhidīna

٨١

And [recall, O People of the Scripture], when Allāh took the covenant of the prophets, [saying], "Whatever I give you of the Scripture and wisdom and then there comes to you a messenger confirming what is with you, you [must] believe in him and support him." [Allāh] said, "Have you acknowledged and taken upon that My commitment?"1 They said, "We have acknowledged it." He said, "Then bear witness, and I am with you among the witnesses."

— Saheeh International

فَمَن

Then whoever

faman

تَوَلَّىٰ

turns away

tawallā

بَعْدَ

after

baʿda

ذَٰلِكَ

that

dhālika

فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

then those

fa-ulāika

هُمُ

they

humu

ٱلْفَـٰسِقُونَ

(are) the defiantly disobedient

l-fāsiqūna

٨٢

And whoever turned away after that - they were the defiantly disobedient.

— Saheeh International

أَفَغَيْرَ

So is (it) other than

afaghayra

دِينِ

(the) religion

dīni

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

يَبْغُونَ

they seek

yabghūna

وَلَهُۥٓ

While to Him

walahu

أَسْلَمَ

(have) submitted

aslama

مَن

whatever

man

فِى

(is) in

ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ

the heavens

l-samāwāti

وَٱلْأَرْضِ

and the earth

wal-arḍi

طَوْعًۭا

willingly

ṭawʿan

وَكَرْهًۭا

or unwillingly

wakarhan

وَإِلَيْهِ

and towards Him

wa-ilayhi

يُرْجَعُونَ

they will be returned

yur'jaʿūna

٨٣

So is it other than the religion of Allāh they desire, while to Him have submitted [all] those within the heavens and earth, willingly or by compulsion, and to Him they will be returned?

— Saheeh International

قُلْ

Say

qul

ءَامَنَّا

We believed

āmannā

بِٱللَّهِ

in Allah

bil-lahi

وَمَآ

and what

wamā

أُنزِلَ

(is) revealed

unzila

عَلَيْنَا

on us

ʿalaynā

وَمَآ

and what

wamā

أُنزِلَ

was revealed

unzila

عَلَىٰٓ

on

ʿalā

إِبْرَٰهِيمَ

Ibrahim

ib'rāhīma

وَإِسْمَـٰعِيلَ

and Ishmael

wa-is'māʿīla

وَإِسْحَـٰقَ

and Isaac

wa-is'ḥāqa

وَيَعْقُوبَ

and Yaqub

wayaʿqūba

وَٱلْأَسْبَاطِ

and the descendents

wal-asbāṭi

وَمَآ

and what

wamā

أُوتِىَ

was given

ūtiya

مُوسَىٰ

(to) Musa

mūsā

وَعِيسَىٰ

and Isa

waʿīsā

وَٱلنَّبِيُّونَ

and the Prophets

wal-nabiyūna

مِن

from

min

رَّبِّهِمْ

their Lord

rabbihim

لَا

Not

نُفَرِّقُ

we make distinction

nufarriqu

بَيْنَ

between

bayna

أَحَدٍۢ

any

aḥadin

مِّنْهُمْ

of them

min'hum

وَنَحْنُ

and we

wanaḥnu

لَهُۥ

to Him

lahu

مُسْلِمُونَ

(are) submissive

mus'limūna

٨٤

Say, "We have believed in Allāh and in what was revealed to us and what was revealed to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the Descendants [al-Asbāṭ], and in what was given to Moses and Jesus and to the prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and we are Muslims [submitting] to Him."

— Saheeh International

وَمَن

And whoever

waman

يَبْتَغِ

seeks

yabtaghi

غَيْرَ

other than

ghayra

ٱلْإِسْلَـٰمِ

[the] Islam

l-is'lāmi

دِينًۭا

(as) religion

dīnan

فَلَن

then never

falan

يُقْبَلَ

will be accepted

yuq'bala

مِنْهُ

from him

min'hu

وَهُوَ

and he

wahuwa

فِى

in

ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ

the Hereafter

l-ākhirati

مِنَ

(will be) from

mina

ٱلْخَـٰسِرِينَ

the losers

l-khāsirīna

٨٥

And whoever desires other than Islām as religion - never will it be accepted from him, and he, in the Hereafter, will be among the losers.

— Saheeh International

كَيْفَ

How

kayfa

يَهْدِى

(shall) guide

yahdī

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

قَوْمًۭا

a people

qawman

كَفَرُوا۟

(who) disbelieved

kafarū

بَعْدَ

after

baʿda

إِيمَـٰنِهِمْ

their belief

īmānihim

وَشَهِدُوٓا۟

and (had) witnessed

washahidū

أَنَّ

that

anna

ٱلرَّسُولَ

the Messenger

l-rasūla

حَقٌّۭ

(is) true

ḥaqqun

وَجَآءَهُمُ

and came to them

wajāahumu

ٱلْبَيِّنَـٰتُ ۚ

the clear proofs

l-bayinātu

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

لَا

(does) not

يَهْدِى

guide

yahdī

ٱلْقَوْمَ

the people

l-qawma

ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ

[the] wrongdoers

l-ẓālimīna

٨٦

How shall Allāh guide a people who disbelieved after their belief and had witnessed that the Messenger is true and clear signs had come to them? And Allāh does not guide the wrongdoing people.

— Saheeh International

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

Those

ulāika

جَزَآؤُهُمْ

their recompense

jazāuhum

أَنَّ

that

anna

عَلَيْهِمْ

on them

ʿalayhim

لَعْنَةَ

(is the) curse

laʿnata

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

وَٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِ

and the Angels

wal-malāikati

وَٱلنَّاسِ

and the people

wal-nāsi

أَجْمَعِينَ

all together

ajmaʿīna

٨٧

Those - their recompense will be that upon them is the curse of Allāh and the angels and the people, all together,

— Saheeh International

خَـٰلِدِينَ

(They will) abide forever

khālidīna

Not

يُخَفَّفُ

will be lightened

yukhaffafu

عَنْهُمُ

for them

ʿanhumu

ٱلْعَذَابُ

the punishment

l-ʿadhābu

وَلَا

and not

walā

هُمْ

they

hum

يُنظَرُونَ

will be reprieved

yunẓarūna

٨٨

Abiding eternally therein. The punishment will not be lightened for them, nor will they be reprieved,

— Saheeh International

إِلَّا

Except

illā

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

تَابُوا۟

repent

tābū

مِنۢ

from

min

بَعْدِ

after

baʿdi

ذَٰلِكَ

that

dhālika

وَأَصْلَحُوا۟

and reform[ed] themselves

wa-aṣlaḥū

فَإِنَّ

Then indeed

fa-inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

غَفُورٌۭ

(is) Oft-Forgiving

ghafūrun

رَّحِيمٌ

Most Merciful

raḥīmun

٨٩

Except for those who repent after that1 and correct themselves. For indeed, Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

كَفَرُوا۟

disbelieved

kafarū

بَعْدَ

after

baʿda

إِيمَـٰنِهِمْ

their belief

īmānihim

ثُمَّ

then

thumma

ٱزْدَادُوا۟

they increased

iz'dādū

كُفْرًۭا

(in) disbelief

kuf'ran

لَّن

never

lan

تُقْبَلَ

will be accepted

tuq'bala

تَوْبَتُهُمْ

their repentance

tawbatuhum

وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

and those

wa-ulāika

هُمُ

they

humu

ٱلضَّآلُّونَ

(are) those who have gone astray

l-ḍālūna

٩٠

Indeed, those who disbelieve [i.e., reject the message] after their belief and then increase in disbelief - never will their [claimed] repentance be accepted, and they are the ones astray.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

كَفَرُوا۟

disbelieve[d]

kafarū

وَمَاتُوا۟

and died

wamātū

وَهُمْ

while they

wahum

كُفَّارٌۭ

(are) disbelievers

kuffārun

فَلَن

then never

falan

يُقْبَلَ

will be accepted

yuq'bala

مِنْ

from

min

أَحَدِهِم

any one of them

aḥadihim

مِّلْءُ

full

mil'u

ٱلْأَرْضِ

earth

l-arḍi

ذَهَبًۭا

(of) gold

dhahaban

وَلَوِ

[and] (even) if

walawi

ٱفْتَدَىٰ

he offered as ransom

if'tadā

بِهِۦٓ ۗ

it

bihi

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

Those

ulāika

لَهُمْ

for them

lahum

عَذَابٌ

(is) a punishment

ʿadhābun

أَلِيمٌۭ

painful

alīmun

وَمَا

and not

wamā

لَهُم

(will be) for them

lahum

مِّن

any

min

نَّـٰصِرِينَ

helpers

nāṣirīna

٩١

Indeed, those who disbelieve and die while they are disbelievers - never would the [whole] capacity of the earth in gold be accepted from one of them if he would [seek to] ransom himself with it. For those there will be a painful punishment, and they will have no helpers.

— Saheeh International

لَن

Never

lan

تَنَالُوا۟

will you attain

tanālū

ٱلْبِرَّ

[the] righteousness

l-bira

حَتَّىٰ

until

ḥattā

تُنفِقُوا۟

you spend

tunfiqū

مِمَّا

from what

mimmā

تُحِبُّونَ ۚ

you love

tuḥibbūna

وَمَا

And whatever

wamā

تُنفِقُوا۟

you spend

tunfiqū

مِن

of

min

شَىْءٍۢ

a thing

shayin

فَإِنَّ

then indeed

fa-inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

بِهِۦ

of it

bihi

عَلِيمٌۭ

(is) All-Knowing

ʿalīmun

٩٢

Never will you attain the good [reward]1 until you spend [in the way of Allāh] from that which you love. And whatever you spend - indeed, Allāh is Knowing of it.

— Saheeh International

۞ كُلُّ

All

kullu

ٱلطَّعَامِ

[the] food

l-ṭaʿāmi

كَانَ

was

kāna

حِلًّۭا

lawful

ḥillan

لِّبَنِىٓ

for (the) Children

libanī

إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ

(of) Israel

is'rāīla

إِلَّا

except

illā

مَا

what

حَرَّمَ

made unlawful

ḥarrama

إِسْرَٰٓءِيلُ

Israel

is'rāīlu

عَلَىٰ

upon

ʿalā

نَفْسِهِۦ

himself

nafsihi

مِن

from

min

قَبْلِ

before

qabli

أَن

[that]

an

تُنَزَّلَ

(was) revealed

tunazzala

ٱلتَّوْرَىٰةُ ۗ

the Taurat

l-tawrātu

قُلْ

Say

qul

فَأْتُوا۟

So bring

fatū

بِٱلتَّوْرَىٰةِ

the Taurat

bil-tawrāti

فَٱتْلُوهَآ

and recite it

fa-it'lūhā

إِن

if

in

كُنتُمْ

you are

kuntum

صَـٰدِقِينَ

truthful

ṣādiqīna

٩٣

All food was lawful to the Children of Israel except what Israel [i.e., Jacob] had made unlawful to himself before the Torah was revealed. Say, [O Muḥammad], "So bring the Torah and recite it, if you should be truthful."

— Saheeh International

فَمَنِ

Then whoever

famani

ٱفْتَرَىٰ

fabricates

if'tarā

عَلَى

about

ʿalā

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

ٱلْكَذِبَ

[the] lie

l-kadhiba

مِنۢ

from

min

بَعْدِ

after

baʿdi

ذَٰلِكَ

that

dhālika

فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

then those

fa-ulāika

هُمُ

they

humu

ٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَ

(are) the wrongdoers

l-ẓālimūna

٩٤

And whoever invents about Allāh untruth after that - then those are [truly] the wrongdoers.

— Saheeh International

قُلْ

Say

qul

صَدَقَ

(has) spoken the truth

ṣadaqa

ٱللَّهُ ۗ

Allah

l-lahu

فَٱتَّبِعُوا۟

then follow

fa-ittabiʿū

مِلَّةَ

(the) religion

millata

إِبْرَٰهِيمَ

(of) Ibrahim

ib'rāhīma

حَنِيفًۭا

(the) upright

ḥanīfan

وَمَا

and not

wamā

كَانَ

he was

kāna

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَ

the polytheists

l-mush'rikīna

٩٥

Say, "Allāh has told the truth. So follow the religion of Abraham, inclining toward truth; and he was not of the polytheists."1

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

أَوَّلَ

(the) First

awwala

بَيْتٍۢ

House

baytin

وُضِعَ

set up

wuḍiʿa

لِلنَّاسِ

for the mankind

lilnnāsi

لَلَّذِى

(is) the one which

lalladhī

بِبَكَّةَ

(is) at Bakkah

bibakkata

مُبَارَكًۭا

blessed

mubārakan

وَهُدًۭى

and a guidance

wahudan

لِّلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

for the worlds

lil'ʿālamīna

٩٦

Indeed, the first House [of worship] established for mankind was that at Bakkah [i.e., Makkah] - blessed and a guidance for the worlds.

— Saheeh International

فِيهِ

In it

fīhi

ءَايَـٰتٌۢ

(are) signs

āyātun

بَيِّنَـٰتٌۭ

clear

bayyinātun

مَّقَامُ

standing place

maqāmu

إِبْرَٰهِيمَ ۖ

(of) Ibrahim

ib'rāhīma

وَمَن

and whoever

waman

دَخَلَهُۥ

enters it

dakhalahu

كَانَ

is

kāna

ءَامِنًۭا ۗ

safe

āminan

وَلِلَّهِ

And (due) to Allah

walillahi

عَلَى

upon

ʿalā

ٱلنَّاسِ

the mankind

l-nāsi

حِجُّ

(is) pilgrimage

ḥijju

ٱلْبَيْتِ

(of) the House

l-bayti

مَنِ

(for one) who

mani

ٱسْتَطَاعَ

is able

is'taṭāʿa

إِلَيْهِ

to [it]

ilayhi

سَبِيلًۭا ۚ

(find) a way

sabīlan

وَمَن

And whoever

waman

كَفَرَ

disbelieved

kafara

فَإِنَّ

then indeed

fa-inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

غَنِىٌّ

(is) free from need

ghaniyyun

عَنِ

of

ʿani

ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

the universe

l-ʿālamīna

٩٧

In it are clear signs [such as] the standing place of Abraham. And whoever enters it [i.e., the Ḥaram] shall be safe. And [due] to Allāh from the people is a pilgrimage to the House - for whoever is able to find thereto a way. But whoever disbelieves [i.e., refuses] - then indeed, Allāh is free from need of the worlds.1

— Saheeh International

قُلْ

Say

qul

يَـٰٓأَهْلَ

O People

yāahla

ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ

(of) the Book

l-kitābi

لِمَ

Why

lima

تَكْفُرُونَ

(do) you disbelieve

takfurūna

بِـَٔايَـٰتِ

in (the) Verses

biāyāti

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

وَٱللَّهُ

while Allah

wal-lahu

شَهِيدٌ

(is) a Witness

shahīdun

عَلَىٰ

over

ʿalā

مَا

what

تَعْمَلُونَ

you do

taʿmalūna

٩٨

Say, "O People of the Scripture, why do you disbelieve in the verses of Allāh while Allāh is Witness over what you do?"

— Saheeh International

قُلْ

Say

qul

يَـٰٓأَهْلَ

O People

yāahla

ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ

(of) the Book

l-kitābi

لِمَ

Why

lima

تَصُدُّونَ

(do) you hinder

taṣuddūna

عَن

from

ʿan

سَبِيلِ

(the) way

sabīli

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

مَنْ

(those) who

man

ءَامَنَ

believe[d]

āmana

تَبْغُونَهَا

seeking (to make) it

tabghūnahā

عِوَجًۭا

(seem) crooked

ʿiwajan

وَأَنتُمْ

while you

wa-antum

شُهَدَآءُ ۗ

(are) witnesses

shuhadāu

وَمَا

And not

wamā

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

بِغَـٰفِلٍ

(is) unaware

bighāfilin

عَمَّا

of what

ʿammā

تَعْمَلُونَ

you do

taʿmalūna

٩٩

Say, "O People of the Scripture, why do you avert from the way of Allāh those who believe, seeking to make it [seem] deviant, while you are witnesses [to the truth]? And Allāh is not unaware of what you do."

— Saheeh International

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا

O you

yāayyuhā

ٱلَّذِينَ

who

alladhīna

ءَامَنُوٓا۟

believe[d]

āmanū

إِن

If

in

تُطِيعُوا۟

you obey

tuṭīʿū

فَرِيقًۭا

a group

farīqan

مِّنَ

from

mina

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

أُوتُوا۟

were given

ūtū

ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ

the Book

l-kitāba

يَرُدُّوكُم

they will turn you back

yaruddūkum

بَعْدَ

after

baʿda

إِيمَـٰنِكُمْ

your belief

īmānikum

كَـٰفِرِينَ

(as) disbelievers

kāfirīna

١٠٠

O you who have believed, if you obey a party of those who were given the Scripture, they would turn you back, after your belief, [to being] unbelievers.

— Saheeh International

وَكَيْفَ

And how (could)

wakayfa

تَكْفُرُونَ

you disbelieve

takfurūna

وَأَنتُمْ

while [you]

wa-antum

تُتْلَىٰ

is recited

tut'lā

عَلَيْكُمْ

upon you

ʿalaykum

ءَايَـٰتُ

(the) Verses

āyātu

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

وَفِيكُمْ

and among you

wafīkum

رَسُولُهُۥ ۗ

(is) His Messenger

rasūluhu

وَمَن

And whoever

waman

يَعْتَصِم

holds firmly

yaʿtaṣim

بِٱللَّهِ

to Allah

bil-lahi

فَقَدْ

then surely

faqad

هُدِىَ

he is guided

hudiya

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

صِرَٰطٍۢ

a path

ṣirāṭin

مُّسْتَقِيمٍۢ

straight

mus'taqīmin

١٠١

And how could you disbelieve while to you are being recited the verses of Allāh and among you is His Messenger? And whoever holds firmly to Allāh1 has [indeed] been guided to a straight path.

— Saheeh International

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا

O you

yāayyuhā

ٱلَّذِينَ

who

alladhīna

ءَامَنُوا۟

believe[d]

āmanū

ٱتَّقُوا۟

Fear

ittaqū

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

حَقَّ

(as is His) right

ḥaqqa

تُقَاتِهِۦ

(that) He (should) be feared

tuqātihi

وَلَا

and (do) not

walā

تَمُوتُنَّ

die

tamūtunna

إِلَّا

except

illā

وَأَنتُم

[while you]

wa-antum

مُّسْلِمُونَ

(as) Muslims

mus'limūna

١٠٢

O you who have believed, fear Allāh as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims [in submission to Him].

— Saheeh International

وَٱعْتَصِمُوا۟

And hold firmly

wa-iʿ'taṣimū

بِحَبْلِ

to (the) rope

biḥabli

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

جَمِيعًۭا

all together

jamīʿan

وَلَا

and (do) not

walā

تَفَرَّقُوا۟ ۚ

be divided

tafarraqū

وَٱذْكُرُوا۟

And remember

wa-udh'kurū

نِعْمَتَ

(the) Favor

niʿ'mata

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

عَلَيْكُمْ

on you

ʿalaykum

إِذْ

when

idh

كُنتُمْ

you were

kuntum

أَعْدَآءًۭ

enemies

aʿdāan

فَأَلَّفَ

then He made friendship

fa-allafa

بَيْنَ

between

bayna

قُلُوبِكُمْ

your hearts

qulūbikum

فَأَصْبَحْتُم

then you became

fa-aṣbaḥtum

بِنِعْمَتِهِۦٓ

by His Favor

biniʿ'matihi

إِخْوَٰنًۭا

brothers

ikh'wānan

وَكُنتُمْ

And you were

wakuntum

عَلَىٰ

on

ʿalā

شَفَا

(the) brink

shafā

حُفْرَةٍۢ

(of) pit

ḥuf'ratin

مِّنَ

of

mina

ٱلنَّارِ

the Fire

l-nāri

فَأَنقَذَكُم

then He saved you

fa-anqadhakum

مِّنْهَا ۗ

from it

min'hā

كَذَٰلِكَ

Thus

kadhālika

يُبَيِّنُ

makes clear

yubayyinu

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

لَكُمْ

for you

lakum

ءَايَـٰتِهِۦ

His Verses

āyātihi

لَعَلَّكُمْ

so that you may

laʿallakum

تَهْتَدُونَ

(be) guided

tahtadūna

١٠٣

And hold firmly to the rope1 of Allāh all together and do not become divided. And remember the favor of Allāh upon you - when you were enemies and He brought your hearts together and you became, by His favor, brothers. And you were on the edge of a pit of the Fire, and He saved you from it. Thus does Allāh make clear to you His verses that you may be guided.

— Saheeh International

وَلْتَكُن

And let there be

waltakun

مِّنكُمْ

among you

minkum

أُمَّةٌۭ

[a] people

ummatun

يَدْعُونَ

inviting

yadʿūna

إِلَى

to

ilā

ٱلْخَيْرِ

the good

l-khayri

وَيَأْمُرُونَ

[and] enjoining

wayamurūna

بِٱلْمَعْرُوفِ

the right

bil-maʿrūfi

وَيَنْهَوْنَ

and forbidding

wayanhawna

عَنِ

from

ʿani

ٱلْمُنكَرِ ۚ

the wrong

l-munkari

وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

and those

wa-ulāika

هُمُ

they

humu

ٱلْمُفْلِحُونَ

(are) the successful ones

l-muf'liḥūna

١٠٤

And let there be [arising] from you a nation inviting to [all that is] good, enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong,1 and those will be the successful.

— Saheeh International

وَلَا

And (do) not

walā

تَكُونُوا۟

be

takūnū

كَٱلَّذِينَ

like those who

ka-alladhīna

تَفَرَّقُوا۟

became divided

tafarraqū

وَٱخْتَلَفُوا۟

and differed

wa-ikh'talafū

مِنۢ

from

min

بَعْدِ

after

baʿdi

مَا

what

جَآءَهُمُ

came to them

jāahumu

ٱلْبَيِّنَـٰتُ ۚ

the clear proofs

l-bayinātu

وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

And those

wa-ulāika

لَهُمْ

for them

lahum

عَذَابٌ

(is) a punishment

ʿadhābun

عَظِيمٌۭ

great

ʿaẓīmun

١٠٥

And do not be like the ones who became divided and differed after the clear proofs had come to them. And those will have a great punishment

— Saheeh International

يَوْمَ

(On the) Day

yawma

تَبْيَضُّ

would become white

tabyaḍḍu

وُجُوهٌۭ

(some) faces

wujūhun

وَتَسْوَدُّ

and would become black

wataswaddu

وُجُوهٌۭ ۚ

(some) faces

wujūhun

فَأَمَّا

As for

fa-ammā

ٱلَّذِينَ

those whose

alladhīna

ٱسْوَدَّتْ

turn black

is'waddat

وُجُوهُهُمْ

[their] faces

wujūhuhum

أَكَفَرْتُم

Did you disbelieve

akafartum

بَعْدَ

after

baʿda

إِيمَـٰنِكُمْ

your belief

īmānikum

فَذُوقُوا۟

Then taste

fadhūqū

ٱلْعَذَابَ

the punishment

l-ʿadhāba

بِمَا

for what

bimā

كُنتُمْ

you used to

kuntum

تَكْفُرُونَ

disbelieve

takfurūna

١٠٦

On the Day [some] faces will turn white and [some] faces will turn black. As for those whose faces turn black, [to them it will be said], "Did you disbelieve [i.e., reject faith] after your belief? Then taste the punishment for what you used to reject."

— Saheeh International

وَأَمَّا

But as for

wa-ammā

ٱلَّذِينَ

those whose

alladhīna

ٱبْيَضَّتْ

turn white

ib'yaḍḍat

وُجُوهُهُمْ

[their] faces

wujūhuhum

فَفِى

then (they will be) in

fafī

رَحْمَةِ

(the) Mercy

raḥmati

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

هُمْ

they

hum

فِيهَا

in it

fīhā

خَـٰلِدُونَ

(will) abide forever

khālidūna

١٠٧

But as for those whose faces turn white, [they will be] within the mercy of Allāh. They will abide therein eternally.

— Saheeh International

تِلْكَ

These

til'ka

ءَايَـٰتُ

(are the) Verses

āyātu

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

نَتْلُوهَا

We recite them

natlūhā

عَلَيْكَ

to you

ʿalayka

بِٱلْحَقِّ ۗ

in truth

bil-ḥaqi

وَمَا

And not

wamā

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

يُرِيدُ

wants

yurīdu

ظُلْمًۭا

injustice

ẓul'man

لِّلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

to the worlds

lil'ʿālamīna

١٠٨

These are the verses of Allāh. We recite them to you, [O Muḥammad], in truth; and Allāh wants no injustice to the worlds [i.e., His creatures].

— Saheeh International

وَلِلَّهِ

And to Allah (belongs)

walillahi

مَا

whatever

فِى

(is) in

ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ

the heavens

l-samāwāti

وَمَا

and whatever

wamā

فِى

(is) in

ٱلْأَرْضِ ۚ

the earth

l-arḍi

وَإِلَى

And to

wa-ilā

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

تُرْجَعُ

will be returned

tur'jaʿu

ٱلْأُمُورُ

the matters

l-umūru

١٠٩

To Allāh belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And to Allāh will [all] matters be returned.

— Saheeh International

كُنتُمْ

You are

kuntum

خَيْرَ

(the) best

khayra

أُمَّةٍ

(of) people

ummatin

أُخْرِجَتْ

raised

ukh'rijat

لِلنَّاسِ

for the mankind

lilnnāsi

تَأْمُرُونَ

enjoining

tamurūna

بِٱلْمَعْرُوفِ

the right

bil-maʿrūfi

وَتَنْهَوْنَ

and forbidding

watanhawna

عَنِ

[from]

ʿani

ٱلْمُنكَرِ

the wrong

l-munkari

وَتُؤْمِنُونَ

and believing

watu'minūna

بِٱللَّهِ ۗ

in Allah

bil-lahi

وَلَوْ

And if

walaw

ءَامَنَ

believed

āmana

أَهْلُ

(the) People

ahlu

ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ

(of) the Book

l-kitābi

لَكَانَ

surely would have been

lakāna

خَيْرًۭا

good

khayran

لَّهُم ۚ

for them

lahum

مِّنْهُمُ

Among them

min'humu

ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ

(are) [the] believers

l-mu'minūna

وَأَكْثَرُهُمُ

but most of them

wa-aktharuhumu

ٱلْفَـٰسِقُونَ

(are) defiantly disobedient

l-fāsiqūna

١١٠

You are the best nation produced [as an example] for mankind. You enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and believe in Allāh. If only the People of the Scripture had believed, it would have been better for them. Among them are believers, but most of them are defiantly disobedient.

— Saheeh International

لَن

Never

lan

يَضُرُّوكُمْ

will they harm you

yaḍurrūkum

إِلَّآ

except

illā

أَذًۭى ۖ

a hurt

adhan

وَإِن

And if

wa-in

يُقَـٰتِلُوكُمْ

they fight you

yuqātilūkum

يُوَلُّوكُمُ

they will turn (towards) you

yuwallūkumu

ٱلْأَدْبَارَ

the backs

l-adbāra

ثُمَّ

then

thumma

لَا

not

يُنصَرُونَ

they will be helped

yunṣarūna

١١١

They will not harm you except for [some] annoyance. And if they fight you, they will show you their backs [i.e., retreat]; then they will not be aided.

— Saheeh International

ضُرِبَتْ

Struck

ḍuribat

عَلَيْهِمُ

on them

ʿalayhimu

ٱلذِّلَّةُ

the humiliation

l-dhilatu

أَيْنَ

wherever

ayna

مَا

that

ثُقِفُوٓا۟

they are found

thuqifū

إِلَّا

except

illā

بِحَبْلٍۢ

with a rope

biḥablin

مِّنَ

from

mina

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

وَحَبْلٍۢ

and a rope

waḥablin

مِّنَ

from

mina

ٱلنَّاسِ

the people

l-nāsi

وَبَآءُو

And they incurred

wabāū

بِغَضَبٍۢ

wrath

bighaḍabin

مِّنَ

from

mina

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

وَضُرِبَتْ

and struck

waḍuribat

عَلَيْهِمُ

on them

ʿalayhimu

ٱلْمَسْكَنَةُ ۚ

the poverty

l-maskanatu

ذَٰلِكَ

That

dhālika

بِأَنَّهُمْ

(is) because

bi-annahum

كَانُوا۟

they used to

kānū

يَكْفُرُونَ

disbelieve

yakfurūna

بِـَٔايَـٰتِ

in (the) Verses

biāyāti

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

وَيَقْتُلُونَ

and they killed

wayaqtulūna

ٱلْأَنۢبِيَآءَ

the Prophets

l-anbiyāa

بِغَيْرِ

without

bighayri

حَقٍّۢ ۚ

right

ḥaqqin

ذَٰلِكَ

That

dhālika

بِمَا

(is) because

bimā

عَصَوا۟

they disobeyed

ʿaṣaw

وَّكَانُوا۟

and they used to

wakānū

يَعْتَدُونَ

transgress

yaʿtadūna

١١٢

They have been put under humiliation [by Allāh] wherever they are overtaken, except for a rope [i.e., covenant] from Allāh and a rope [i.e., treaty] from the people [i.e., the Muslims].1 And they have drawn upon themselves anger from Allāh and have been put under destitution. That is because they disbelieved in [i.e., rejected] the verses of Allāh and killed the prophets without right. That is because they disobeyed and [habitually] transgressed.

— Saheeh International

۞ لَيْسُوا۟

They are not

laysū

سَوَآءًۭ ۗ

(the) same

sawāan

مِّنْ

among

min

أَهْلِ

(the) People

ahli

ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ

(of) the Book

l-kitābi

أُمَّةٌۭ

(is) a community

ummatun

قَآئِمَةٌۭ

standing

qāimatun

يَتْلُونَ

(and) reciting

yatlūna

ءَايَـٰتِ

(the) Verses

āyāti

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

ءَانَآءَ

(in the) hours

ānāa

ٱلَّيْلِ

(of) the night

al-layli

وَهُمْ

and they

wahum

يَسْجُدُونَ

prostrate

yasjudūna

١١٣

They are not [all] the same; among the People of the Scripture is a community1 standing [in obedience], reciting the verses of Allāh during periods of the night and prostrating [in prayer].

— Saheeh International

يُؤْمِنُونَ

They believe

yu'minūna

بِٱللَّهِ

in Allah

bil-lahi

وَٱلْيَوْمِ

and the Day

wal-yawmi

ٱلْـَٔاخِرِ

the Last

l-ākhiri

وَيَأْمُرُونَ

and they enjoin

wayamurūna

بِٱلْمَعْرُوفِ

[with] the right

bil-maʿrūfi

وَيَنْهَوْنَ

and forbid

wayanhawna

عَنِ

[from]

ʿani

ٱلْمُنكَرِ

the wrong

l-munkari

وَيُسَـٰرِعُونَ

and they hasten

wayusāriʿūna

فِى

in

ٱلْخَيْرَٰتِ

the good deeds

l-khayrāti

وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

And those

wa-ulāika

مِنَ

(are) from

mina

ٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ

the righteous

l-ṣāliḥīna

١١٤

They believe in Allāh and the Last Day, and they enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and hasten to good deeds. And those are among the righteous.

— Saheeh International

وَمَا

And whatever

wamā

يَفْعَلُوا۟

they do

yafʿalū

مِنْ

of

min

خَيْرٍۢ

a good

khayrin

فَلَن

then never

falan

يُكْفَرُوهُ ۗ

will they be denied it

yuk'farūhu

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

عَلِيمٌۢ

(is) All-Knowing

ʿalīmun

بِٱلْمُتَّقِينَ

of the God-fearing

bil-mutaqīna

١١٥

And whatever good they do - never will it be denied them. And Allāh is Knowing of the righteous.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

كَفَرُوا۟

disbelieved

kafarū

لَن

never

lan

تُغْنِىَ

will avail

tugh'niya

عَنْهُمْ

[for] them

ʿanhum

أَمْوَٰلُهُمْ

their wealth

amwāluhum

وَلَآ

and not

walā

أَوْلَـٰدُهُم

their children

awlāduhum

مِّنَ

against

mina

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

شَيْـًۭٔا ۖ

anything

shayan

وَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

and those

wa-ulāika

أَصْحَـٰبُ

(are the) companions

aṣḥābu

ٱلنَّارِ ۚ

(of) the Fire

l-nāri

هُمْ

they

hum

فِيهَا

in it

fīhā

خَـٰلِدُونَ

(will) abide forever

khālidūna

١١٦

Indeed, those who disbelieve - never will their wealth or their children avail them against Allāh at all, and those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide therein eternally.

— Saheeh International

مَثَلُ

Example

mathalu

مَا

(of) what

يُنفِقُونَ

they spend

yunfiqūna

فِى

in

هَـٰذِهِ

this

hādhihi

ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ

[the] life

l-ḥayati

ٱلدُّنْيَا

(of) the world

l-dun'yā

كَمَثَلِ

(is) like (the) example

kamathali

رِيحٍۢ

(of) a wind

rīḥin

فِيهَا

in it

fīhā

صِرٌّ

(is) frost

ṣirrun

أَصَابَتْ

it struck

aṣābat

حَرْثَ

(the) harvest

ḥartha

قَوْمٍۢ

(of) a people

qawmin

ظَلَمُوٓا۟

who wronged

ẓalamū

أَنفُسَهُمْ

themselves

anfusahum

فَأَهْلَكَتْهُ ۚ

then destroyed it

fa-ahlakathu

وَمَا

And not

wamā

ظَلَمَهُمُ

(has) wronged them

ẓalamahumu

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

وَلَـٰكِنْ

[and] but

walākin

أَنفُسَهُمْ

themselves

anfusahum

يَظْلِمُونَ

they wronged

yaẓlimūna

١١٧

The example of what they spend in this worldly life is like that of a wind containing frost which strikes the harvest of a people who have wronged themselves [i.e., sinned] and destroys it. And Allāh has not wronged them, but they wrong themselves.

— Saheeh International

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا

O you

yāayyuhā

ٱلَّذِينَ

who

alladhīna

ءَامَنُوا۟

believe[d]

āmanū

لَا

(Do) not

تَتَّخِذُوا۟

take

tattakhidhū

بِطَانَةًۭ

(as) intimates

biṭānatan

مِّن

from

min

دُونِكُمْ

other than yourselves

dūnikum

لَا

not

يَأْلُونَكُمْ

they will spare you

yalūnakum

خَبَالًۭا

(any) ruin

khabālan

وَدُّوا۟

They wish

waddū

مَا

what

عَنِتُّمْ

distresses you

ʿanittum

قَدْ

Indeed

qad

بَدَتِ

(has become) apparent

badati

ٱلْبَغْضَآءُ

the hatred

l-baghḍāu

مِنْ

from

min

أَفْوَٰهِهِمْ

their mouths

afwāhihim

وَمَا

and what

wamā

تُخْفِى

conceals

tukh'fī

صُدُورُهُمْ

their breasts

ṣudūruhum

أَكْبَرُ ۚ

(is) greater

akbaru

قَدْ

Certainly

qad

بَيَّنَّا

We made clear

bayyannā

لَكُمُ

for you

lakumu

ٱلْـَٔايَـٰتِ ۖ

the Verses

l-āyāti

إِن

if

in

كُنتُمْ

you were

kuntum

تَعْقِلُونَ

(to use) reason

taʿqilūna

١١٨

O you who have believed, do not take as intimates those other than yourselves [i.e., believers], for they will not spare you [any] ruin. They wish you would have hardship. Hatred has already appeared from their mouths, and what their breasts conceal is greater. We have certainly made clear to you the signs, if you will use reason.

— Saheeh International

هَـٰٓأَنتُمْ

Lo! You are

hāantum

أُو۟لَآءِ

those

ulāi

تُحِبُّونَهُمْ

you love them

tuḥibbūnahum

وَلَا

but not

walā

يُحِبُّونَكُمْ

they love you

yuḥibbūnakum

وَتُؤْمِنُونَ

and you believe

watu'minūna

بِٱلْكِتَـٰبِ

in the Book

bil-kitābi

كُلِّهِۦ

all of it

kullihi

وَإِذَا

And when

wa-idhā

لَقُوكُمْ

they meet you

laqūkum

قَالُوٓا۟

they say

qālū

ءَامَنَّا

We believe

āmannā

وَإِذَا

And when

wa-idhā

خَلَوْا۟

they are alone

khalaw

عَضُّوا۟

they bite

ʿaḍḍū

عَلَيْكُمُ

at you

ʿalaykumu

ٱلْأَنَامِلَ

the finger tips

l-anāmila

مِنَ

(out) of

mina

ٱلْغَيْظِ ۚ

[the] rage

l-ghayẓi

قُلْ

Say

qul

مُوتُوا۟

Die

mūtū

بِغَيْظِكُمْ ۗ

in your rage

bighayẓikum

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

عَلِيمٌۢ

(is) All-Knowing

ʿalīmun

بِذَاتِ

of what

bidhāti

ٱلصُّدُورِ

(is in) the breasts

l-ṣudūri

١١٩

Here you are loving them but they are not loving you, while you believe in the Scripture - all of it.1 And when they meet you, they say, "We believe." But when they are alone, they bite their fingertips at you in rage. Say, "Die in your rage. Indeed, Allāh is Knowing of that within the breasts."

— Saheeh International

إِن

If

in

تَمْسَسْكُمْ

touches you

tamsaskum

حَسَنَةٌۭ

a good

ḥasanatun

تَسُؤْهُمْ

it grieves them

tasu'hum

وَإِن

and if

wa-in

تُصِبْكُمْ

strikes you

tuṣib'kum

سَيِّئَةٌۭ

misfortune

sayyi-atun

يَفْرَحُوا۟

they rejoice

yafraḥū

بِهَا ۖ

at it

bihā

وَإِن

And if

wa-in

تَصْبِرُوا۟

you are patient

taṣbirū

وَتَتَّقُوا۟

and fear (Allah)

watattaqū

لَا

not

يَضُرُّكُمْ

will harm you

yaḍurrukum

كَيْدُهُمْ

their plot

kayduhum

شَيْـًٔا ۗ

(in) anything

shayan

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

بِمَا

of what

bimā

يَعْمَلُونَ

they do

yaʿmalūna

مُحِيطٌۭ

(is) All-Encompassing

muḥīṭun

١٢٠

If good touches you, it distresses them; but if harm strikes you, they rejoice at it. And if you are patient and fear Allāh, their plot will not harm you at all. Indeed, Allāh is encompassing of what they do.

— Saheeh International

وَإِذْ

And when

wa-idh

غَدَوْتَ

you left early morning

ghadawta

مِنْ

from

min

أَهْلِكَ

your household

ahlika

تُبَوِّئُ

to post

tubawwi-u

ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

the believers

l-mu'minīna

مَقَـٰعِدَ

(to take) positions

maqāʿida

لِلْقِتَالِ ۗ

for the battle

lil'qitāli

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

سَمِيعٌ

(is) All-Hearing

samīʿun

عَلِيمٌ

All-Knowing

ʿalīmun

١٢١

And [remember] when you, [O Muḥammad], left your family in the morning to post the believers at their stations for the battle [of Uḥud] - and Allāh is Hearing and Knowing -

— Saheeh International

إِذْ

When

idh

هَمَّت

inclined

hammat

طَّآئِفَتَانِ

two parties

ṭāifatāni

مِنكُمْ

among you

minkum

أَن

that

an

تَفْشَلَا

they lost heart

tafshalā

وَٱللَّهُ

but Allah

wal-lahu

وَلِيُّهُمَا ۗ

(was) their protector

waliyyuhumā

وَعَلَى

And on

waʿalā

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

فَلْيَتَوَكَّلِ

let put (their) trust

falyatawakkali

ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ

the believers

l-mu'minūna

١٢٢

When two parties among you were about to lose courage, but Allāh was their ally; and upon Allāh the believers should rely.

— Saheeh International

وَلَقَدْ

And certainly

walaqad

نَصَرَكُمُ

helped you

naṣarakumu

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

بِبَدْرٍۢ

in Badr

bibadrin

وَأَنتُمْ

while you (were)

wa-antum

أَذِلَّةٌۭ ۖ

weak

adhillatun

فَٱتَّقُوا۟

So fear

fa-ittaqū

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

لَعَلَّكُمْ

so that you may

laʿallakum

تَشْكُرُونَ

(be) grateful

tashkurūna

١٢٣

And already had Allāh given you victory at [the battle of] Badr while you were weak [i.e., few in number]. Then fear Allāh; perhaps you will be grateful.

— Saheeh International

إِذْ

When

idh

تَقُولُ

you said

taqūlu

لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

to the believers

lil'mu'minīna

أَلَن

Is it not

alan

يَكْفِيَكُمْ

enough for you

yakfiyakum

أَن

that

an

يُمِدَّكُمْ

reinforces you

yumiddakum

رَبُّكُم

your Lord

rabbukum

بِثَلَـٰثَةِ

with three

bithalāthati

ءَالَـٰفٍۢ

thousand[s]

ālāfin

مِّنَ

[of]

mina

ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِ

[the] Angels

l-malāikati

مُنزَلِينَ

[the ones] sent down

munzalīna

١٢٤

[Remember] when you said to the believers, "Is it not sufficient for you that your Lord should reinforce you with three thousand angels sent down?

— Saheeh International

بَلَىٰٓ ۚ

Yes

balā

إِن

if

in

تَصْبِرُوا۟

you are patient

taṣbirū

وَتَتَّقُوا۟

and fear (Allah)

watattaqū

وَيَأْتُوكُم

and they come upon you

wayatūkum

مِّن

[of]

min

فَوْرِهِمْ

suddenly

fawrihim

هَـٰذَا

[this]

hādhā

يُمْدِدْكُمْ

will reinforce you

yum'did'kum

رَبُّكُم

your Lord

rabbukum

بِخَمْسَةِ

with five

bikhamsati

ءَالَـٰفٍۢ

thousand[s]

ālāfin

مِّنَ

[of]

mina

ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِ

[the] Angels

l-malāikati

مُسَوِّمِينَ

[the ones] having marks

musawwimīna

١٢٥

Yes, if you remain patient and conscious of Allāh and they [i.e., the enemy] come upon you [attacking] in rage, your Lord will reinforce you with five thousand angels having marks [of distinction]."

— Saheeh International

وَمَا

And not

wamā

جَعَلَهُ

made it

jaʿalahu

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

إِلَّا

except

illā

بُشْرَىٰ

(as) good news

bush'rā

لَكُمْ

for you

lakum

وَلِتَطْمَئِنَّ

and to reassure

walitaṭma-inna

قُلُوبُكُم

your hearts

qulūbukum

بِهِۦ ۗ

with it

bihi

وَمَا

And (there is) no

wamā

ٱلنَّصْرُ

[the] victory

l-naṣru

إِلَّا

except

illā

مِنْ

from

min

عِندِ

[near]

ʿindi

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

ٱلْعَزِيزِ

the All-Mighty

l-ʿazīzi

ٱلْحَكِيمِ

the All-Wise

l-ḥakīmi

١٢٦

And Allāh made it not except as [a sign of] good tidings for you and to reassure your hearts thereby. And victory is not except from Allāh, the Exalted in Might, the Wise -

— Saheeh International

لِيَقْطَعَ

That He may cut off

liyaqṭaʿa

طَرَفًۭا

a part

ṭarafan

مِّنَ

of

mina

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

كَفَرُوٓا۟

disbelieved

kafarū

أَوْ

or

aw

يَكْبِتَهُمْ

suppress them

yakbitahum

فَيَنقَلِبُوا۟

so (that) they turn back

fayanqalibū

خَآئِبِينَ

disappointed

khāibīna

١٢٧

That He might cut down a section of the disbelievers or suppress them so that they turn back disappointed.

— Saheeh International

لَيْسَ

Not

laysa

لَكَ

for you

laka

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلْأَمْرِ

the decision

l-amri

شَىْءٌ

(of) anything

shayon

أَوْ

whether

aw

يَتُوبَ

He turns

yatūba

عَلَيْهِمْ

to them

ʿalayhim

أَوْ

or

aw

يُعَذِّبَهُمْ

punishes them

yuʿadhibahum

فَإِنَّهُمْ

for indeed, they

fa-innahum

ظَـٰلِمُونَ

(are) wrongdoers

ẓālimūna

١٢٨

Not for you, [O Muḥammad, but for Allāh], is the decision whether He should [cut them down] or forgive them or punish them, for indeed, they are wrongdoers.

— Saheeh International

وَلِلَّهِ

And to Allah (belongs)

walillahi

مَا

what

فِى

(is) in

ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ

the heavens

l-samāwāti

وَمَا

and what

wamā

فِى

(is) in

ٱلْأَرْضِ ۚ

the earth

l-arḍi

يَغْفِرُ

He forgives

yaghfiru

لِمَن

[for] whom

liman

يَشَآءُ

He wills

yashāu

وَيُعَذِّبُ

and punishes

wayuʿadhibu

مَن

whom

man

يَشَآءُ ۚ

He wills

yashāu

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

غَفُورٌۭ

(is) Oft-Forgiving

ghafūrun

رَّحِيمٌۭ

Most Merciful

raḥīmun

١٢٩

And to Allāh belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. He forgives whom He wills and punishes whom He wills. And Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.

— Saheeh International

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا

O you

yāayyuhā

ٱلَّذِينَ

who

alladhīna

ءَامَنُوا۟

believe

āmanū

لَا

(Do) not

تَأْكُلُوا۟

eat

takulū

ٱلرِّبَوٰٓا۟

the usury

l-riba

أَضْعَـٰفًۭا

doubled

aḍʿāfan

مُّضَـٰعَفَةًۭ ۖ

multiplied

muḍāʿafatan

وَٱتَّقُوا۟

And fear

wa-ittaqū

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

لَعَلَّكُمْ

so that you may

laʿallakum

تُفْلِحُونَ

(be) successful

tuf'liḥūna

١٣٠

O you who have believed, do not consume usury, doubled and multiplied, but fear Allāh that you may be successful.

— Saheeh International

وَٱتَّقُوا۟

And fear

wa-ittaqū

ٱلنَّارَ

the Fire

l-nāra

ٱلَّتِىٓ

which

allatī

أُعِدَّتْ

is prepared

uʿiddat

لِلْكَـٰفِرِينَ

for the disbelievers

lil'kāfirīna

١٣١

And fear the Fire, which has been prepared for the disbelievers.

— Saheeh International

وَأَطِيعُوا۟

And obey

wa-aṭīʿū

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

وَٱلرَّسُولَ

and the Messenger

wal-rasūla

لَعَلَّكُمْ

so that you may

laʿallakum

تُرْحَمُونَ

receive mercy

tur'ḥamūna

١٣٢

And obey Allāh and the Messenger that you may obtain mercy.

— Saheeh International

۞ وَسَارِعُوٓا۟

And hasten

wasāriʿū

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

مَغْفِرَةٍۢ

forgiveness

maghfiratin

مِّن

from

min

رَّبِّكُمْ

your Lord

rabbikum

وَجَنَّةٍ

and a Garden

wajannatin

عَرْضُهَا

its width

ʿarḍuhā

ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتُ

(is like that of) the heavens

l-samāwātu

وَٱلْأَرْضُ

and the earth

wal-arḍu

أُعِدَّتْ

prepared

uʿiddat

لِلْمُتَّقِينَ

for the pious

lil'muttaqīna

١٣٣

And hasten to forgiveness from your Lord and a garden [i.e., Paradise] as wide as the heavens and earth, prepared for the righteous

— Saheeh International

ٱلَّذِينَ

Those who

alladhīna

يُنفِقُونَ

spend

yunfiqūna

فِى

in

ٱلسَّرَّآءِ

[the] ease

l-sarāi

وَٱلضَّرَّآءِ

and (in) the hardship

wal-ḍarāi

وَٱلْكَـٰظِمِينَ

and those who restrain

wal-kāẓimīna

ٱلْغَيْظَ

the anger

l-ghayẓa

وَٱلْعَافِينَ

and those who pardon

wal-ʿāfīna

عَنِ

[from]

ʿani

ٱلنَّاسِ ۗ

the people

l-nāsi

وَٱللَّهُ

and Allah

wal-lahu

يُحِبُّ

loves

yuḥibbu

ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ

the good-doers

l-muḥ'sinīna

١٣٤

Who spend [in the cause of Allāh] during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people - and Allāh loves the doers of good;

— Saheeh International

وَٱلَّذِينَ

And those

wa-alladhīna

إِذَا

when

idhā

فَعَلُوا۟

they did

faʿalū

فَـٰحِشَةً

immorality

fāḥishatan

أَوْ

or

aw

ظَلَمُوٓا۟

wronged

ẓalamū

أَنفُسَهُمْ

themselves

anfusahum

ذَكَرُوا۟

they remember

dhakarū

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

فَٱسْتَغْفَرُوا۟

then ask forgiveness

fa-is'taghfarū

لِذُنُوبِهِمْ

for their sins

lidhunūbihim

وَمَن

and who

waman

يَغْفِرُ

(can) forgive

yaghfiru

ٱلذُّنُوبَ

the sins

l-dhunūba

إِلَّا

except

illā

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

وَلَمْ

And not

walam

يُصِرُّوا۟

they persist

yuṣirrū

عَلَىٰ

on

ʿalā

مَا

what

فَعَلُوا۟

they did

faʿalū

وَهُمْ

while they

wahum

يَعْلَمُونَ

know

yaʿlamūna

١٣٥

And those who, when they commit an immorality or wrong themselves [by transgression], remember Allāh and seek forgiveness for their sins - and who can forgive sins except Allāh? - and [who] do not persist in what they have done while they know.

— Saheeh International

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

Those

ulāika

جَزَآؤُهُم

their reward

jazāuhum

مَّغْفِرَةٌۭ

(is) forgiveness

maghfiratun

مِّن

from

min

رَّبِّهِمْ

their Lord

rabbihim

وَجَنَّـٰتٌۭ

and Gardens

wajannātun

تَجْرِى

flows

tajrī

مِن

from

min

تَحْتِهَا

underneath it

taḥtihā

ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ

the rivers

l-anhāru

خَـٰلِدِينَ

abiding forever

khālidīna

فِيهَا ۚ

in it

fīhā

وَنِعْمَ

And an excellent

waniʿ'ma

أَجْرُ

reward

ajru

ٱلْعَـٰمِلِينَ

(for) the (righteous) workers

l-ʿāmilīna

١٣٦

Those - their reward is forgiveness from their Lord and gardens beneath which rivers flow [in Paradise], wherein they will abide eternally; and excellent is the reward of the [righteous] workers.

— Saheeh International

قَدْ

Verily

qad

خَلَتْ

passed

khalat

مِن

from

min

قَبْلِكُمْ

before you

qablikum

سُنَنٌۭ

situations

sunanun

فَسِيرُوا۟

then travel

fasīrū

فِى

in

ٱلْأَرْضِ

the earth

l-arḍi

فَٱنظُرُوا۟

and see

fa-unẓurū

كَيْفَ

how

kayfa

كَانَ

was

kāna

عَـٰقِبَةُ

(the) end

ʿāqibatu

ٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَ

(of) the deniers

l-mukadhibīna

١٣٧

Similar situations [as yours] have passed on before you, so proceed throughout the earth and observe how was the end of those who denied.

— Saheeh International

هَـٰذَا

This

hādhā

بَيَانٌۭ

(is) a declaration

bayānun

لِّلنَّاسِ

for the people

lilnnāsi

وَهُدًۭى

and guidance

wahudan

وَمَوْعِظَةٌۭ

and admonition

wamawʿiẓatun

لِّلْمُتَّقِينَ

for the God-fearing

lil'muttaqīna

١٣٨

This [Qur’ān] is a clear statement to [all] the people and a guidance and instruction for those conscious of Allāh.

— Saheeh International

وَلَا

And (do) not

walā

تَهِنُوا۟

weaken

tahinū

وَلَا

and (do) not

walā

تَحْزَنُوا۟

grieve

taḥzanū

وَأَنتُمُ

and you (will be)

wa-antumu

ٱلْأَعْلَوْنَ

[the] superior

l-aʿlawna

إِن

if

in

كُنتُم

you are

kuntum

مُّؤْمِنِينَ

believers

mu'minīna

١٣٩

So do not weaken and do not grieve, and you will be superior if you are [true] believers.

— Saheeh International

إِن

If

in

يَمْسَسْكُمْ

touched you

yamsaskum

قَرْحٌۭ

a wound

qarḥun

فَقَدْ

so certainly

faqad

مَسَّ

(has) touched

massa

ٱلْقَوْمَ

the people

l-qawma

قَرْحٌۭ

wound

qarḥun

مِّثْلُهُۥ ۚ

like it

mith'luhu

وَتِلْكَ

And this

watil'ka

ٱلْأَيَّامُ

[the] days

l-ayāmu

نُدَاوِلُهَا

We alternate them

nudāwiluhā

بَيْنَ

among

bayna

ٱلنَّاسِ

the people

l-nāsi

وَلِيَعْلَمَ

[and] so that makes evident

waliyaʿlama

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

ءَامَنُوا۟

believe[d]

āmanū

وَيَتَّخِذَ

and take

wayattakhidha

مِنكُمْ

from you

minkum

شُهَدَآءَ ۗ

martyrs

shuhadāa

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

لَا

(does) not

يُحِبُّ

love

yuḥibbu

ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ

the wrongdoers

l-ẓālimīna

١٤٠

If a wound should touch you - there has already touched the [opposing] people a wound similar to it. And these days [of varying conditions] We alternate among the people so that Allāh may make evident those who believe and [may] take to Himself from among you martyrs - and Allāh does not like the wrongdoers -

— Saheeh International

وَلِيُمَحِّصَ

And so that may purify

waliyumaḥḥiṣa

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

ءَامَنُوا۟

believe

āmanū

وَيَمْحَقَ

and destroy

wayamḥaqa

ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ

the disbelievers

l-kāfirīna

١٤١

And that Allāh may purify the believers [through trials] and destroy the disbelievers.

— Saheeh International

أَمْ

Or

am

حَسِبْتُمْ

do you think

ḥasib'tum

أَن

that

an

تَدْخُلُوا۟

you will enter

tadkhulū

ٱلْجَنَّةَ

Paradise

l-janata

وَلَمَّا

while has not yet

walammā

يَعْلَمِ

made evident

yaʿlami

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

جَـٰهَدُوا۟

strove hard

jāhadū

مِنكُمْ

among you

minkum

وَيَعْلَمَ

and made evident

wayaʿlama

ٱلصَّـٰبِرِينَ

the steadfast

l-ṣābirīna

١٤٢

Or do you think that you will enter Paradise while Allāh has not yet made evident those of you who fight in His cause and made evident those who are steadfast?

— Saheeh International

وَلَقَدْ

And certainly

walaqad

كُنتُمْ

you used to

kuntum

تَمَنَّوْنَ

wish

tamannawna

ٱلْمَوْتَ

(for) death

l-mawta

مِن

from

min

قَبْلِ

before

qabli

أَن

[that]

an

تَلْقَوْهُ

you met it

talqawhu

فَقَدْ

then indeed

faqad

رَأَيْتُمُوهُ

you have seen it

ra-aytumūhu

وَأَنتُمْ

while you (were)

wa-antum

تَنظُرُونَ

looking on

tanẓurūna

١٤٣

And you had certainly wished for death [i.e., martyrdom] before you encountered it, and you have [now] seen it [before you] while you were looking on.

— Saheeh International

وَمَا

And not

wamā

مُحَمَّدٌ

(is) Muhammad

muḥammadun

إِلَّا

except

illā

رَسُولٌۭ

a Messenger

rasūlun

قَدْ

certainly

qad

خَلَتْ

passed away

khalat

مِن

from

min

قَبْلِهِ

before him

qablihi

ٱلرُّسُلُ ۚ

[the] (other) Messengers

l-rusulu

أَفَإِي۟ن

So if

afa-in

مَّاتَ

he died

māta

أَوْ

or

aw

قُتِلَ

is slain

qutila

ٱنقَلَبْتُمْ

will you turn back

inqalabtum

عَلَىٰٓ

on

ʿalā

أَعْقَـٰبِكُمْ ۚ

your heels

aʿqābikum

وَمَن

And whoever

waman

يَنقَلِبْ

turns back

yanqalib

عَلَىٰ

on

ʿalā

عَقِبَيْهِ

his heels

ʿaqibayhi

فَلَن

then never

falan

يَضُرَّ

will he harm

yaḍurra

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

شَيْـًۭٔا ۗ

(in) anything

shayan

وَسَيَجْزِى

And will reward

wasayajzī

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

ٱلشَّـٰكِرِينَ

the grateful ones

l-shākirīna

١٤٤

Muḥammad is not but a messenger. [Other] messengers have passed on before him. So if he was to die or be killed, would you turn back on your heels [to unbelief]? And he who turns back on his heels will never harm Allāh at all; but Allāh will reward the grateful.

— Saheeh International

وَمَا

And not

wamā

كَانَ

is

kāna

لِنَفْسٍ

for a soul

linafsin

أَن

that

an

تَمُوتَ

he dies

tamūta

إِلَّا

except

illā

بِإِذْنِ

by (the) permission

bi-idh'ni

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

كِتَـٰبًۭا

(at a) decree

kitāban

مُّؤَجَّلًۭا ۗ

determined

mu-ajjalan

وَمَن

And whoever

waman

يُرِدْ

desires

yurid

ثَوَابَ

reward

thawāba

ٱلدُّنْيَا

(of) the world

l-dun'yā

نُؤْتِهِۦ

We will give him

nu'tihi

مِنْهَا

thereof

min'hā

وَمَن

and whoever

waman

يُرِدْ

desires

yurid

ثَوَابَ

reward

thawāba

ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ

(of) the Hereafter

l-ākhirati

نُؤْتِهِۦ

We will give him

nu'tihi

مِنْهَا ۚ

thereof

min'hā

وَسَنَجْزِى

And We will reward

wasanajzī

ٱلشَّـٰكِرِينَ

the grateful ones

l-shākirīna

١٤٥

And it is not [possible] for one to die except by permission of Allāh at a decree determined. And whoever desires the reward of this world - We will give him thereof; and whoever desires the reward of the Hereafter - We will give him thereof. And We will reward the grateful.

— Saheeh International

وَكَأَيِّن

And how many

waka-ayyin

مِّن

from

min

نَّبِىٍّۢ

a Prophet

nabiyyin

قَـٰتَلَ

fought

qātala

مَعَهُۥ

with him

maʿahu

رِبِّيُّونَ

(were) religious scholars

ribbiyyūna

كَثِيرٌۭ

many

kathīrun

فَمَا

But not

famā

وَهَنُوا۟

they lost heart

wahanū

لِمَآ

for what

limā

أَصَابَهُمْ

befell them

aṣābahum

فِى

in

سَبِيلِ

(the) way

sabīli

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

وَمَا

and not

wamā

ضَعُفُوا۟

they weakened

ḍaʿufū

وَمَا

and not

wamā

ٱسْتَكَانُوا۟ ۗ

they gave in

is'takānū

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

يُحِبُّ

loves

yuḥibbu

ٱلصَّـٰبِرِينَ

the patient ones

l-ṣābirīna

١٤٦

And how many a prophet [fought in battle and] with him fought many religious scholars. But they never lost assurance due to what afflicted them in the cause of Allāh, nor did they weaken or submit. And Allāh loves the steadfast.

— Saheeh International

وَمَا

And not

wamā

كَانَ

were

kāna

قَوْلَهُمْ

their words

qawlahum

إِلَّآ

except

illā

أَن

that

an

قَالُوا۟

they said

qālū

رَبَّنَا

Our Lord

rabbanā

ٱغْفِرْ

forgive

igh'fir

لَنَا

for us

lanā

ذُنُوبَنَا

our sins

dhunūbanā

وَإِسْرَافَنَا

and our excesses

wa-is'rāfanā

فِىٓ

in

أَمْرِنَا

our affairs

amrinā

وَثَبِّتْ

and make firm

wathabbit

أَقْدَامَنَا

our feet

aqdāmanā

وَٱنصُرْنَا

and give us victory

wa-unṣur'nā

عَلَى

over

ʿalā

ٱلْقَوْمِ

[the people]

l-qawmi

ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ

the disbelievers

l-kāfirīna

١٤٧

And their words were not but that they said, "Our Lord, forgive us our sins and the excess [committed] in our affairs and plant firmly our feet and give us victory over the disbelieving people."

— Saheeh International

فَـَٔاتَىٰهُمُ

So gave them

faātāhumu

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

ثَوَابَ

reward

thawāba

ٱلدُّنْيَا

(in) the world

l-dun'yā

وَحُسْنَ

and good

waḥus'na

ثَوَابِ

reward

thawābi

ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ ۗ

(in) the Hereafter

l-ākhirati

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

يُحِبُّ

loves

yuḥibbu

ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ

the good-doers

l-muḥ'sinīna

١٤٨

So Allāh gave them the reward of this world and the good reward of the Hereafter. And Allāh loves the doers of good.

— Saheeh International

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا

O you

yāayyuhā

ٱلَّذِينَ

who

alladhīna

ءَامَنُوٓا۟

believe

āmanū

إِن

If

in

تُطِيعُوا۟

you obey

tuṭīʿū

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

كَفَرُوا۟

disbelieve

kafarū

يَرُدُّوكُمْ

they will turn you back

yaruddūkum

عَلَىٰٓ

on

ʿalā

أَعْقَـٰبِكُمْ

your heels

aʿqābikum

فَتَنقَلِبُوا۟

then you will turn back

fatanqalibū

خَـٰسِرِينَ

(as) losers

khāsirīna

١٤٩

O you who have believed, if you obey those who disbelieve, they will turn you back on your heels, and you will [then] become losers.

— Saheeh International

بَلِ

Nay

bali

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

مَوْلَىٰكُمْ ۖ

(is) your Protector

mawlākum

وَهُوَ

and He

wahuwa

خَيْرُ

(is the) best

khayru

ٱلنَّـٰصِرِينَ

(of) the Helpers

l-nāṣirīna

١٥٠

But Allāh is your protector, and He is the best of helpers.

— Saheeh International

سَنُلْقِى

We will cast

sanul'qī

فِى

in

قُلُوبِ

(the) hearts

qulūbi

ٱلَّذِينَ

(of) those who

alladhīna

كَفَرُوا۟

disbelieve

kafarū

ٱلرُّعْبَ

[the] terror

l-ruʿ'ba

بِمَآ

because

bimā

أَشْرَكُوا۟

they associated partners

ashrakū

بِٱللَّهِ

with Allah

bil-lahi

مَا

what

لَمْ

not

lam

يُنَزِّلْ

He sent down

yunazzil

بِهِۦ

about it

bihi

سُلْطَـٰنًۭا ۖ

any authority

sul'ṭānan

وَمَأْوَىٰهُمُ

and their refuge

wamawāhumu

ٱلنَّارُ ۚ

(will be) the Fire

l-nāru

وَبِئْسَ

and wretched

wabi'sa

مَثْوَى

(is the) abode

mathwā

ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ

[of] the wrongdoers

l-ẓālimīna

١٥١

We will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve for what they have associated with Allāh of which He had not sent down [any] authority.1 And their refuge will be the Fire, and wretched is the residence of the wrongdoers.

— Saheeh International

وَلَقَدْ

And certainly

walaqad

صَدَقَكُمُ

fulfilled to you

ṣadaqakumu

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

وَعْدَهُۥٓ

His promise

waʿdahu

إِذْ

when

idh

تَحُسُّونَهُم

you were killing them

taḥussūnahum

بِإِذْنِهِۦ ۖ

by His permission

bi-idh'nihi

حَتَّىٰٓ

until

ḥattā

إِذَا

when

idhā

فَشِلْتُمْ

you lost courage

fashil'tum

وَتَنَـٰزَعْتُمْ

and you fell into dispute

watanāzaʿtum

فِى

concerning

ٱلْأَمْرِ

the order

l-amri

وَعَصَيْتُم

and you disobeyed

waʿaṣaytum

مِّنۢ

from

min

بَعْدِ

after

baʿdi

مَآ

[what]

أَرَىٰكُم

He (had) shown you

arākum

مَّا

what

تُحِبُّونَ ۚ

you love

tuḥibbūna

مِنكُم

Among you

minkum

مَّن

(are some) who

man

يُرِيدُ

desire

yurīdu

ٱلدُّنْيَا

the world

l-dun'yā

وَمِنكُم

and among you

waminkum

مَّن

(are some) who

man

يُرِيدُ

desire

yurīdu

ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةَ ۚ

the Hereafter

l-ākhirata

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

صَرَفَكُمْ

He diverted you

ṣarafakum

عَنْهُمْ

from them

ʿanhum

لِيَبْتَلِيَكُمْ ۖ

so that He may test you

liyabtaliyakum

وَلَقَدْ

And surely

walaqad

عَفَا

He forgave

ʿafā

عَنكُمْ ۗ

you

ʿankum

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

ذُو

(is the) Possessor

dhū

فَضْلٍ

(of) Bounty

faḍlin

عَلَى

for

ʿalā

ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

the believers

l-mu'minīna

١٥٢

And Allāh had certainly fulfilled His promise to you when you were killing them [i.e., the enemy] by His permission until [the time] when you lost courage and fell to disputing about the order [given by the Prophet (ﷺ)] and disobeyed after He had shown you that which you love.1 Among you are some who desire this world, and among you are some who desire the Hereafter. Then He turned you back from them [defeated] that He might test you. And He has already forgiven you, and Allāh is the possessor of bounty for the believers.

— Saheeh International

۞ إِذْ

When

idh

تُصْعِدُونَ

you were running uphill

tuṣ'ʿidūna

وَلَا

and not

walā

تَلْوُۥنَ

casting a glance

talwūna

عَلَىٰٓ

on

ʿalā

أَحَدٍۢ

anyone

aḥadin

وَٱلرَّسُولُ

while the Messenger

wal-rasūlu

يَدْعُوكُمْ

was calling you

yadʿūkum

فِىٓ

[in]

أُخْرَىٰكُمْ

(from) behind you

ukh'rākum

فَأَثَـٰبَكُمْ

So (He) repaid you

fa-athābakum

غَمًّۢا

(with) distress

ghamman

بِغَمٍّۢ

on distress

bighammin

لِّكَيْلَا

so that not

likaylā

تَحْزَنُوا۟

you grieve

taḥzanū

عَلَىٰ

over

ʿalā

مَا

what

فَاتَكُمْ

escaped you

fātakum

وَلَا

and not

walā

مَآ

what

أَصَـٰبَكُمْ ۗ

(had) befallen you

aṣābakum

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

خَبِيرٌۢ

(is) All-Aware

khabīrun

بِمَا

of what

bimā

تَعْمَلُونَ

you do

taʿmalūna

١٥٣

[Remember] when you [fled and] climbed [the mountain] without looking aside at anyone while the Messenger was calling you from behind. So Allāh repaid you with distress upon distress so you would not grieve for that which had escaped you [of victory and spoils of war] or [for] that which had befallen you [of injury and death]. And Allāh is [fully] Aware of what you do.

— Saheeh International

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

أَنزَلَ

He sent down

anzala

عَلَيْكُم

upon you

ʿalaykum

مِّنۢ

from

min

بَعْدِ

after

baʿdi

ٱلْغَمِّ

the distress

l-ghami

أَمَنَةًۭ

security

amanatan

نُّعَاسًۭا

slumber

nuʿāsan

يَغْشَىٰ

overcoming

yaghshā

طَآئِفَةًۭ

a group

ṭāifatan

مِّنكُمْ ۖ

of you

minkum

وَطَآئِفَةٌۭ

while a group

waṭāifatun

قَدْ

certainly

qad

أَهَمَّتْهُمْ

worried [them]

ahammathum

أَنفُسُهُمْ

(about) themselves

anfusuhum

يَظُنُّونَ

thinking

yaẓunnūna

بِٱللَّهِ

about Allah

bil-lahi

غَيْرَ

other than

ghayra

ٱلْحَقِّ

the truth

l-ḥaqi

ظَنَّ

(the) thought

ẓanna

ٱلْجَـٰهِلِيَّةِ ۖ

(of) [the] ignorance

l-jāhiliyati

يَقُولُونَ

saying

yaqūlūna

هَل

Is (there)

hal

لَّنَا

for us

lanā

مِنَ

from

mina

ٱلْأَمْرِ

the matter

l-amri

مِن

any

min

شَىْءٍۢ ۗ

thing

shayin

قُلْ

Say

qul

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱلْأَمْرَ

the matter

l-amra

كُلَّهُۥ

all (of) it

kullahu

لِلَّهِ ۗ

(is) for Allah

lillahi

يُخْفُونَ

They hide

yukh'fūna

فِىٓ

in

أَنفُسِهِم

themselves

anfusihim

مَّا

what

لَا

not

يُبْدُونَ

they reveal

yub'dūna

لَكَ ۖ

to you

laka

يَقُولُونَ

They say

yaqūlūna

لَوْ

If

law

كَانَ

was

kāna

لَنَا

for us

lanā

مِنَ

from

mina

ٱلْأَمْرِ

the matter

l-amri

شَىْءٌۭ

anything

shayon

مَّا

not

قُتِلْنَا

we would have been killed

qutil'nā

هَـٰهُنَا ۗ

here

hāhunā

قُل

Say

qul

لَّوْ

If

law

كُنتُمْ

you were

kuntum

فِى

in

بُيُوتِكُمْ

your houses

buyūtikum

لَبَرَزَ

surely (would have) come out

labaraza

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

كُتِبَ

was decreed

kutiba

عَلَيْهِمُ

upon them

ʿalayhimu

ٱلْقَتْلُ

[the] death

l-qatlu

إِلَىٰ

towards

ilā

مَضَاجِعِهِمْ ۖ

their places of death

maḍājiʿihim

وَلِيَبْتَلِىَ

And that might test

waliyabtaliya

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

مَا

what

فِى

(is) in

صُدُورِكُمْ

your breasts

ṣudūrikum

وَلِيُمَحِّصَ

and that He may purge

waliyumaḥḥiṣa

مَا

what

فِى

(is) in

قُلُوبِكُمْ ۗ

your hearts

qulūbikum

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

عَلِيمٌۢ

(is) All-Aware

ʿalīmun

بِذَاتِ

of what

bidhāti

ٱلصُّدُورِ

(is in) the breasts

l-ṣudūri

١٥٤

Then after distress, He sent down upon you security [in the form of] drowsiness, overcoming a faction of you, while another faction worried about themselves, thinking of Allāh other than the truth - the thought of ignorance, saying, "Is there anything for us [to have done] in this matter?" Say, "Indeed, the matter belongs completely to Allāh." They conceal within themselves what they will not reveal to you. They say, "If there was anything we could have done in the matter, we [i.e., some of us] would not have been killed right here." Say, "Even if you had been inside your houses, those decreed to be killed would have come out to their death beds." [It was] so that Allāh might test what is in your breasts and purify what is in your hearts. And Allāh is Knowing of that within the breasts.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

تَوَلَّوْا۟

turned back

tawallaw

مِنكُمْ

among you

minkum

يَوْمَ

(on the) day

yawma

ٱلْتَقَى

met

l-taqā

ٱلْجَمْعَانِ

the two hosts

l-jamʿāni

إِنَّمَا

only

innamā

ٱسْتَزَلَّهُمُ

made them slip

is'tazallahumu

ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُ

the Shaitaan

l-shayṭānu

بِبَعْضِ

for some

bibaʿḍi

مَا

(of) what

كَسَبُوا۟ ۖ

they (had) earned

kasabū

وَلَقَدْ

And surely

walaqad

عَفَا

forgave

ʿafā

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

عَنْهُمْ ۗ

[on] them

ʿanhum

إِنَّ

indeed

inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

غَفُورٌ

(is) Oft-Forgiving

ghafūrun

حَلِيمٌۭ

All-Forbearing

ḥalīmun

١٥٥

Indeed, those of you who turned back on the day the two armies met [at Uḥud] - it was Satan who caused them to slip because of some [blame] they had earned. But Allāh has already forgiven them. Indeed, Allāh is Forgiving and Forbearing.

— Saheeh International

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا

O you

yāayyuhā

ٱلَّذِينَ

who

alladhīna

ءَامَنُوا۟

believe[d]

āmanū

لَا

(Do) not

تَكُونُوا۟

be

takūnū

كَٱلَّذِينَ

like those who

ka-alladhīna

كَفَرُوا۟

disbelieved

kafarū

وَقَالُوا۟

and they said

waqālū

لِإِخْوَٰنِهِمْ

about their brothers

li-ikh'wānihim

إِذَا

when

idhā

ضَرَبُوا۟

they traveled

ḍarabū

فِى

in

ٱلْأَرْضِ

the earth

l-arḍi

أَوْ

or

aw

كَانُوا۟

they were

kānū

غُزًّۭى

fighting

ghuzzan

لَّوْ

If

law

كَانُوا۟

they had been

kānū

عِندَنَا

with us

ʿindanā

مَا

not

مَاتُوا۟

they (would have) died

mātū

وَمَا

and not

wamā

قُتِلُوا۟

they (would have) been killed

qutilū

لِيَجْعَلَ

So makes

liyajʿala

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

ذَٰلِكَ

that

dhālika

حَسْرَةًۭ

a regret

ḥasratan

فِى

in

قُلُوبِهِمْ ۗ

their hearts

qulūbihim

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

يُحْىِۦ

gives life

yuḥ'yī

وَيُمِيتُ ۗ

and causes death

wayumītu

وَٱللَّهُ

and Allah

wal-lahu

بِمَا

of what

bimā

تَعْمَلُونَ

you do

taʿmalūna

بَصِيرٌۭ

(is) All-Seer

baṣīrun

١٥٦

O you who have believed, do not be like those who disbelieved and said about their brothers when they traveled through the land or went out to fight, "If they had been with us, they would not have died or have been killed," so Allāh makes that [misconception] a regret within their hearts. And it is Allāh who gives life and causes death, and Allāh is Seeing of what you do.

— Saheeh International

وَلَئِن

And if

wala-in

قُتِلْتُمْ

you are killed

qutil'tum

فِى

in

سَبِيلِ

(the) way

sabīli

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

أَوْ

aw

مُتُّمْ

die[d]

muttum

لَمَغْفِرَةٌۭ

certainly forgiveness

lamaghfiratun

مِّنَ

from

mina

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

وَرَحْمَةٌ

and Mercy

waraḥmatun

خَيْرٌۭ

(are) better

khayrun

مِّمَّا

than what

mimmā

يَجْمَعُونَ

they accumulate

yajmaʿūna

١٥٧

And if you are killed in the cause of Allāh or die - then forgiveness from Allāh and mercy are better than whatever they accumulate [in this world].

— Saheeh International

وَلَئِن

And if

wala-in

مُّتُّمْ

you die

muttum

أَوْ

or

aw

قُتِلْتُمْ

are killed

qutil'tum

لَإِلَى

surely to

la-ilā

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

تُحْشَرُونَ

you will be gathered

tuḥ'sharūna

١٥٨

And whether you die or are killed, unto Allāh you will be gathered.

— Saheeh International

فَبِمَا

So because

fabimā

رَحْمَةٍۢ

(of) Mercy

raḥmatin

مِّنَ

from

mina

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

لِنتَ

you dealt gently

linta

لَهُمْ ۖ

with them

lahum

وَلَوْ

And if

walaw

كُنتَ

you had been

kunta

فَظًّا

rude

faẓẓan

غَلِيظَ

(and) harsh

ghalīẓa

ٱلْقَلْبِ

(at) [the] heart

l-qalbi

لَٱنفَضُّوا۟

surely they (would have) dispersed

la-infaḍḍū

مِنْ

from

min

حَوْلِكَ ۖ

around you

ḥawlika

فَٱعْفُ

Then pardon

fa-uʿ'fu

عَنْهُمْ

[from] them

ʿanhum

وَٱسْتَغْفِرْ

and ask forgiveness

wa-is'taghfir

لَهُمْ

for them

lahum

وَشَاوِرْهُمْ

and consult them

washāwir'hum

فِى

in

ٱلْأَمْرِ ۖ

the matter

l-amri

فَإِذَا

Then when

fa-idhā

عَزَمْتَ

you have decided

ʿazamta

فَتَوَكَّلْ

then put trust

fatawakkal

عَلَى

on

ʿalā

ٱللَّهِ ۚ

Allah

l-lahi

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

يُحِبُّ

loves

yuḥibbu

ٱلْمُتَوَكِّلِينَ

the ones who put trust (in Him)

l-mutawakilīna

١٥٩

So by mercy from Allāh, [O Muḥammad], you were lenient with them. And if you had been rude [in speech] and harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from about you. So pardon them and ask forgiveness for them and consult them in the matter. And when you have decided, then rely upon Allāh. Indeed, Allāh loves those who rely [upon Him].

— Saheeh International

إِن

If

in

يَنصُرْكُمُ

helps you

yanṣur'kumu

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

فَلَا

then not

falā

غَالِبَ

(can) overcome

ghāliba

لَكُمْ ۖ

[for] you

lakum

وَإِن

and if

wa-in

يَخْذُلْكُمْ

He forsakes you

yakhdhul'kum

فَمَن

then who

faman

ذَا

(is)

dhā

ٱلَّذِى

the one who

alladhī

يَنصُرُكُم

can help you

yanṣurukum

مِّنۢ

from

min

بَعْدِهِۦ ۗ

after Him

baʿdihi

وَعَلَى

And on

waʿalā

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

فَلْيَتَوَكَّلِ

let put (their) trust

falyatawakkali

ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ

the believers

l-mu'minūna

١٦٠

If Allāh should aid you, no one can overcome you; but if He should forsake you, who is there that can aid you after Him? And upon Allāh let the believers rely.

— Saheeh International

وَمَا

And not

wamā

كَانَ

is

kāna

لِنَبِىٍّ

for a Prophet

linabiyyin

أَن

that

an

يَغُلَّ ۚ

he defrauds

yaghulla

وَمَن

And whoever

waman

يَغْلُلْ

defrauds

yaghlul

يَأْتِ

will bring

yati

بِمَا

what

bimā

غَلَّ

he had defrauded

ghalla

يَوْمَ

(on the) Day

yawma

ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ ۚ

(of) Resurrection

l-qiyāmati

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

تُوَفَّىٰ

is repaid in full

tuwaffā

كُلُّ

every

kullu

نَفْسٍۢ

soul

nafsin

مَّا

what

كَسَبَتْ

it earned

kasabat

وَهُمْ

and they

wahum

لَا

(will) not

يُظْلَمُونَ

be wronged

yuẓ'lamūna

١٦١

It is not [attributable] to any prophet that he would act unfaithfully [in regard to war booty]. And whoever betrays, [taking unlawfully], will come with what he took on the Day of Resurrection. Then will every soul be [fully] compensated for what it earned, and they will not be wronged.

— Saheeh International

أَفَمَنِ

So is (the one) who

afamani

ٱتَّبَعَ

pursues

ittabaʿa

رِضْوَٰنَ

(the) pleasure

riḍ'wāna

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

كَمَنۢ

like (the one) who

kaman

بَآءَ

draws

bāa

بِسَخَطٍۢ

on (himself) wrath

bisakhaṭin

مِّنَ

of

mina

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

وَمَأْوَىٰهُ

and his abode

wamawāhu

جَهَنَّمُ ۚ

(is) hell

jahannamu

وَبِئْسَ

and wretched

wabi'sa

ٱلْمَصِيرُ

(is) the destination

l-maṣīru

١٦٢

So is one who pursues the pleasure of Allāh like one who brings upon himself the anger of Allāh and whose refuge is Hell? And wretched is the destination.

— Saheeh International

هُمْ

They

hum

دَرَجَـٰتٌ

(are in varying) degrees

darajātun

عِندَ

near

ʿinda

ٱللَّهِ ۗ

Allah

l-lahi

وَٱللَّهُ

and Allah

wal-lahu

بَصِيرٌۢ

(is) All-Seer

baṣīrun

بِمَا

of what

bimā

يَعْمَلُونَ

they do

yaʿmalūna

١٦٣

They are [varying] degrees in the sight of Allāh, and Allāh is Seeing of whatever they do.

— Saheeh International

لَقَدْ

Certainly

laqad

مَنَّ

bestowed a Favor

manna

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

عَلَى

upon

ʿalā

ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

the believers

l-mu'minīna

إِذْ

as

idh

بَعَثَ

He raised

baʿatha

فِيهِمْ

among them

fīhim

رَسُولًۭا

a Messenger

rasūlan

مِّنْ

from

min

أَنفُسِهِمْ

themselves

anfusihim

يَتْلُوا۟

reciting

yatlū

عَلَيْهِمْ

to them

ʿalayhim

ءَايَـٰتِهِۦ

His Verses

āyātihi

وَيُزَكِّيهِمْ

and purifying them

wayuzakkīhim

وَيُعَلِّمُهُمُ

and teaching them

wayuʿallimuhumu

ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ

the Book

l-kitāba

وَٱلْحِكْمَةَ

and the wisdom

wal-ḥik'mata

وَإِن

although

wa-in

كَانُوا۟

they were

kānū

مِن

from

min

قَبْلُ

before (that)

qablu

لَفِى

certainly in

lafī

ضَلَـٰلٍۢ

(the) error

ḍalālin

مُّبِينٍ

clear

mubīnin

١٦٤

Certainly did Allāh confer [great] favor upon the believers when He sent among them a Messenger from themselves, reciting to them His verses and purifying them and teaching them the Book [i.e., the Qur’ān] and wisdom,1 although they had been before in manifest error.

— Saheeh International

أَوَلَمَّآ

Or when

awalammā

أَصَـٰبَتْكُم

struck you

aṣābatkum

مُّصِيبَةٌۭ

disaster

muṣībatun

قَدْ

surely

qad

أَصَبْتُم

you (had) struck (them)

aṣabtum

مِّثْلَيْهَا

twice of it

mith'layhā

قُلْتُمْ

you said

qul'tum

أَنَّىٰ

From where

annā

هَـٰذَا ۖ

(is) this

hādhā

قُلْ

Say

qul

هُوَ

It

huwa

مِنْ

(is)

min

عِندِ

from

ʿindi

أَنفُسِكُمْ ۗ

yourselves

anfusikum

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

عَلَىٰ

(is) on

ʿalā

كُلِّ

every

kulli

شَىْءٍۢ

thing

shayin

قَدِيرٌۭ

All-Powerful

qadīrun

١٦٥

Why [is it that] when a [single] disaster struck you [on the day of Uḥud], although you had struck [the enemy in the battle of Badr] with one twice as great, you said, "From where is this?" Say, "It is from yourselves [i.e., due to your sin]." Indeed, Allāh is over all things competent.

— Saheeh International

وَمَآ

And what

wamā

أَصَـٰبَكُمْ

struck you

aṣābakum

يَوْمَ

(on the) day

yawma

ٱلْتَقَى

(when) met

l-taqā

ٱلْجَمْعَانِ

the two hosts

l-jamʿāni

فَبِإِذْنِ

(was) by (the) permission

fabi-idh'ni

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

وَلِيَعْلَمَ

and that He (might) make evident

waliyaʿlama

ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

the believers

l-mu'minīna

١٦٦

And what struck you on the day the two armies met [at Uḥud] was by permission of Allāh that He might make evident the [true] believers

— Saheeh International

وَلِيَعْلَمَ

And that He (might) make evident

waliyaʿlama

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

نَافَقُوا۟ ۚ

(are) hypocrites

nāfaqū

وَقِيلَ

And it was said

waqīla

لَهُمْ

to them

lahum

تَعَالَوْا۟

Come

taʿālaw

قَـٰتِلُوا۟

fight

qātilū

فِى

in

سَبِيلِ

(the) way

sabīli

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

أَوِ

or

awi

ٱدْفَعُوا۟ ۖ

defend

id'faʿū

قَالُوا۟

They said

qālū

لَوْ

If

law

نَعْلَمُ

we knew

naʿlamu

قِتَالًۭا

fighting

qitālan

لَّٱتَّبَعْنَـٰكُمْ ۗ

certainly we (would have) followed you

la-ittabaʿnākum

هُمْ

They

hum

لِلْكُفْرِ

to disbelief

lil'kuf'ri

يَوْمَئِذٍ

that day

yawma-idhin

أَقْرَبُ

(were) nearer

aqrabu

مِنْهُمْ

than [them]

min'hum

لِلْإِيمَـٰنِ ۚ

to the faith

lil'īmāni

يَقُولُونَ

saying

yaqūlūna

بِأَفْوَٰهِهِم

with their mouths

bi-afwāhihim

مَّا

what

لَيْسَ

was not

laysa

فِى

in

قُلُوبِهِمْ ۗ

their hearts

qulūbihim

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

أَعْلَمُ

(is) Most Knowing

aʿlamu

بِمَا

of what

bimā

يَكْتُمُونَ

they conceal

yaktumūna

١٦٧

And that He might make evident those who are hypocrites. For it was said to them, "Come, fight in the way of Allāh or [at least] defend." They said, "If we had known [there would be] battle, we would have followed you." They were nearer to disbelief that day than to faith, saying with their mouths what was not in their hearts. And Allāh is most knowing of what they conceal -

— Saheeh International

ٱلَّذِينَ

Those who

alladhīna

قَالُوا۟

said

qālū

لِإِخْوَٰنِهِمْ

about their brothers

li-ikh'wānihim

وَقَعَدُوا۟

while they sat

waqaʿadū

لَوْ

If

law

أَطَاعُونَا

they (had) obeyed us

aṭāʿūnā

مَا

not

قُتِلُوا۟ ۗ

they would have been killed

qutilū

قُلْ

Say

qul

فَٱدْرَءُوا۟

Then avert

fa-id'raū

عَنْ

from

ʿan

أَنفُسِكُمُ

yourselves

anfusikumu

ٱلْمَوْتَ

[the] death

l-mawta

إِن

if

in

كُنتُمْ

you are

kuntum

صَـٰدِقِينَ

truthful

ṣādiqīna

١٦٨

Those who said about their brothers while sitting [at home], "If they had obeyed us, they would not have been killed." Say, "Then prevent death from yourselves, if you should be truthful."

— Saheeh International

وَلَا

And (do) not

walā

تَحْسَبَنَّ

think

taḥsabanna

ٱلَّذِينَ

(of) those who

alladhīna

قُتِلُوا۟

are killed

qutilū

فِى

in

سَبِيلِ

(the) way

sabīli

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

أَمْوَٰتًۢا ۚ

(as) dead

amwātan

بَلْ

Nay

bal

أَحْيَآءٌ

They are alive

aḥyāon

عِندَ

near

ʿinda

رَبِّهِمْ

their Lord

rabbihim

يُرْزَقُونَ

they are given provision

yur'zaqūna

١٦٩

And never think of those who have been killed in the cause of Allāh as dead. Rather, they are alive with their Lord, receiving provision,

— Saheeh International

فَرِحِينَ

Rejoicing

fariḥīna

بِمَآ

in what

bimā

ءَاتَىٰهُمُ

bestowed them

ātāhumu

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

مِن

of

min

فَضْلِهِۦ

His Bounty

faḍlihi

وَيَسْتَبْشِرُونَ

and they receive good tidings

wayastabshirūna

بِٱلَّذِينَ

about those who

bi-alladhīna

لَمْ

(have) not

lam

يَلْحَقُوا۟

yet joined

yalḥaqū

بِهِم

[with] them

bihim

مِّنْ

[from]

min

خَلْفِهِمْ

(but are) left behind

khalfihim

أَلَّا

that (there will be) no

allā

خَوْفٌ

fear

khawfun

عَلَيْهِمْ

on them

ʿalayhim

وَلَا

and not

walā

هُمْ

they

hum

يَحْزَنُونَ

will grieve

yaḥzanūna

١٧٠

Rejoicing in what Allāh has bestowed upon them of His bounty, and they receive good tidings about those [to be martyred] after them who have not yet joined them - that there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.

— Saheeh International

۞ يَسْتَبْشِرُونَ

They receive good tidings

yastabshirūna

بِنِعْمَةٍۢ

of Favor

biniʿ'matin

مِّنَ

from

mina

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

وَفَضْلٍۢ

and Bounty

wafaḍlin

وَأَنَّ

and that

wa-anna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

لَا

(does) not

يُضِيعُ

let go waste

yuḍīʿu

أَجْرَ

(the) reward

ajra

ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

(of) the believers

l-mu'minīna

١٧١

They receive good tidings of favor from Allāh and bounty and [of the fact] that Allāh does not allow the reward of believers to be lost -

— Saheeh International

ٱلَّذِينَ

Those who

alladhīna

ٱسْتَجَابُوا۟

responded

is'tajābū

لِلَّهِ

to Allah

lillahi

وَٱلرَّسُولِ

and the Messenger

wal-rasūli

مِنۢ

from

min

بَعْدِ

after

baʿdi

مَآ

what

أَصَابَهُمُ

befell them

aṣābahumu

ٱلْقَرْحُ ۚ

the injury

l-qarḥu

لِلَّذِينَ

for those who

lilladhīna

أَحْسَنُوا۟

did good

aḥsanū

مِنْهُمْ

among them

min'hum

وَٱتَّقَوْا۟

and feared Allah

wa-ittaqaw

أَجْرٌ

(is) a reward

ajrun

عَظِيمٌ

great

ʿaẓīmun

١٧٢

Those [believers] who responded to Allāh and the Messenger after injury had struck them. For those who did good among them and feared Allāh is a great reward -

— Saheeh International

ٱلَّذِينَ

Those who

alladhīna

قَالَ

said

qāla

لَهُمُ

to them

lahumu

ٱلنَّاسُ

[the people]

l-nāsu

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱلنَّاسَ

the people

l-nāsa

قَدْ

(have) certainly

qad

جَمَعُوا۟

gathered

jamaʿū

لَكُمْ

against you

lakum

فَٱخْشَوْهُمْ

so fear them

fa-ikh'shawhum

فَزَادَهُمْ

But it increased them

fazādahum

إِيمَـٰنًۭا

(in) faith

īmānan

وَقَالُوا۟

and they said

waqālū

حَسْبُنَا

Sufficient for us

ḥasbunā

ٱللَّهُ

(is) Allah

l-lahu

وَنِعْمَ

and (He is the) best

waniʿ'ma

ٱلْوَكِيلُ

[the] Disposer of affairs

l-wakīlu

١٧٣

Those to whom people [i.e., hypocrites] said, "Indeed, the people have gathered against you, so fear them." But it [merely] increased them in faith, and they said, "Sufficient for us is Allāh, and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs."1

— Saheeh International

فَٱنقَلَبُوا۟

So they returned

fa-inqalabū

بِنِعْمَةٍۢ

with (the) Favor

biniʿ'matin

مِّنَ

of

mina

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

وَفَضْلٍۢ

and Bounty

wafaḍlin

لَّمْ

not

lam

يَمْسَسْهُمْ

touched them

yamsashum

سُوٓءٌۭ

any harm

sūon

وَٱتَّبَعُوا۟

And they followed

wa-ittabaʿū

رِضْوَٰنَ

(the) pleasure

riḍ'wāna

ٱللَّهِ ۗ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

وَٱللَّهُ

and Allah

wal-lahu

ذُو

(is) Possessor

dhū

فَضْلٍ

(of) Bounty

faḍlin

عَظِيمٍ

great

ʿaẓīmin

١٧٤

So they returned with favor from Allāh and bounty, no harm having touched them. And they pursued the pleasure of Allāh, and Allāh is the possessor of great bounty.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّمَا

(It is) only

innamā

ذَٰلِكُمُ

that

dhālikumu

ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُ

the Shaitaan

l-shayṭānu

يُخَوِّفُ

frightens (you)

yukhawwifu

أَوْلِيَآءَهُۥ

(of) his allies

awliyāahu

فَلَا

So (do) not

falā

تَخَافُوهُمْ

fear them

takhāfūhum

وَخَافُونِ

but fear Me

wakhāfūni

إِن

if

in

كُنتُم

you are

kuntum

مُّؤْمِنِينَ

believers

mu'minīna

١٧٥

That is only Satan who frightens [you] of his supporters. So fear them not, but fear Me, if you are [indeed] believers.

— Saheeh International

وَلَا

And (let) not

walā

يَحْزُنكَ

grieve you

yaḥzunka

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

يُسَـٰرِعُونَ

hasten

yusāriʿūna

فِى

in(to)

ٱلْكُفْرِ ۚ

[the] disbelief

l-kuf'ri

إِنَّهُمْ

Indeed, they

innahum

لَن

never

lan

يَضُرُّوا۟

will harm

yaḍurrū

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

شَيْـًۭٔا ۗ

(in) anything

shayan

يُرِيدُ

intends

yurīdu

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

أَلَّا

that not

allā

يَجْعَلَ

He will set

yajʿala

لَهُمْ

for them

lahum

حَظًّۭا

any portion

ḥaẓẓan

فِى

in

ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ ۖ

the Hereafter

l-ākhirati

وَلَهُمْ

And for them

walahum

عَذَابٌ

(is) a punishment

ʿadhābun

عَظِيمٌ

great

ʿaẓīmun

١٧٦

And do not be grieved, [O Muḥammad], by those who hasten into disbelief. Indeed, they will never harm Allāh at all. Allāh intends that He should give them no share in the Hereafter, and for them is a great punishment.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

ٱشْتَرَوُا۟

(have) purchased

ish'tarawū

ٱلْكُفْرَ

[the] disbelief

l-kuf'ra

بِٱلْإِيمَـٰنِ

with the faith

bil-īmāni

لَن

never

lan

يَضُرُّوا۟

will they harm

yaḍurrū

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

شَيْـًۭٔا

(in) anything

shayan

وَلَهُمْ

and for them

walahum

عَذَابٌ

(is) a punishment

ʿadhābun

أَلِيمٌۭ

painful

alīmun

١٧٧

Indeed, those who purchase disbelief [in exchange] for faith - never will they harm Allāh at all, and for them is a painful punishment.

— Saheeh International

وَلَا

And (let) not

walā

يَحْسَبَنَّ

think

yaḥsabanna

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

كَفَرُوٓا۟

disbelieved

kafarū

أَنَّمَا

that

annamā

نُمْلِى

We give respite

num'lī

لَهُمْ

to them

lahum

خَيْرٌۭ

(is) good

khayrun

لِّأَنفُسِهِمْ ۚ

for themselves

li-anfusihim

إِنَّمَا

Only

innamā

نُمْلِى

We give respite

num'lī

لَهُمْ

to them

lahum

لِيَزْدَادُوٓا۟

so that they may increase

liyazdādū

إِثْمًۭا ۚ

(in) sins

ith'man

وَلَهُمْ

and for them

walahum

عَذَابٌۭ

(is) a punishment

ʿadhābun

مُّهِينٌۭ

humiliating

muhīnun

١٧٨

And let not those who disbelieve ever think that [because] We extend their time [of enjoyment] it is better for them. We only extend it for them so that they may increase in sin, and for them is a humiliating punishment.

— Saheeh International

مَّا

Not

كَانَ

is

kāna

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

لِيَذَرَ

to leave

liyadhara

ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

the believers

l-mu'minīna

عَلَىٰ

on

ʿalā

مَآ

what

أَنتُمْ

you (are)

antum

عَلَيْهِ

in [it]

ʿalayhi

حَتَّىٰ

until

ḥattā

يَمِيزَ

He separates

yamīza

ٱلْخَبِيثَ

the evil

l-khabītha

مِنَ

from

mina

ٱلطَّيِّبِ ۗ

the good

l-ṭayibi

وَمَا

And not

wamā

كَانَ

is

kāna

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

لِيُطْلِعَكُمْ

to inform you

liyuṭ'liʿakum

عَلَى

about

ʿalā

ٱلْغَيْبِ

the unseen

l-ghaybi

وَلَـٰكِنَّ

[and] but

walākinna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

يَجْتَبِى

chooses

yajtabī

مِن

from

min

رُّسُلِهِۦ

His Messengers

rusulihi

مَن

whom

man

يَشَآءُ ۖ

He wills

yashāu

فَـَٔامِنُوا۟

so believe

faāminū

بِٱللَّهِ

in Allah

bil-lahi

وَرُسُلِهِۦ ۚ

and His Messengers

warusulihi

وَإِن

and if

wa-in

تُؤْمِنُوا۟

you believe

tu'minū

وَتَتَّقُوا۟

and fear (Allah)

watattaqū

فَلَكُمْ

then for you

falakum

أَجْرٌ

(is a) reward

ajrun

عَظِيمٌۭ

great

ʿaẓīmun

١٧٩

Allāh would not leave the believers in that [state] you are in [presently] until He separates the evil from the good. Nor would Allāh reveal to you the unseen. But [instead], Allāh chooses of His messengers whom He wills, so believe in Allāh and His messengers. And if you believe and fear Him, then for you is a great reward.

— Saheeh International

وَلَا

And (let) not

walā

يَحْسَبَنَّ

think

yaḥsabanna

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

يَبْخَلُونَ

withhold

yabkhalūna

بِمَآ

of what

bimā

ءَاتَىٰهُمُ

(has) given them

ātāhumu

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

مِن

of

min

فَضْلِهِۦ

His Bounty

faḍlihi

هُوَ

(that) it

huwa

خَيْرًۭا

(is) good

khayran

لَّهُم ۖ

for them

lahum

بَلْ

Nay

bal

هُوَ

it

huwa

شَرٌّۭ

(is) bad

sharrun

لَّهُمْ ۖ

for them

lahum

سَيُطَوَّقُونَ

Their necks will be encircled

sayuṭawwaqūna

مَا

(with) what

بَخِلُوا۟

they withheld

bakhilū

بِهِۦ

[with it]

bihi

يَوْمَ

(on the) Day

yawma

ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ ۗ

(of) [the] Resurrection

l-qiyāmati

وَلِلَّهِ

And for Allah

walillahi

مِيرَٰثُ

(is the) heritage

mīrāthu

ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ

(of) the heavens

l-samāwāti

وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۗ

and the earth

wal-arḍi

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

بِمَا

with what

bimā

تَعْمَلُونَ

you do

taʿmalūna

خَبِيرٌۭ

(is) All-Aware

khabīrun

١٨٠

And let not those who [greedily] withhold what Allāh has given them of His bounty ever think that it is better for them. Rather, it is worse for them. Their necks will be encircled by what they withheld on the Day of Resurrection. And to Allāh belongs the heritage of the heavens and the earth. And Allāh, of what you do, is [fully] Aware.

— Saheeh International

لَّقَدْ

Certainly

laqad

سَمِعَ

heard

samiʿa

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

قَوْلَ

(the) saying

qawla

ٱلَّذِينَ

(of) those who

alladhīna

قَالُوٓا۟

said

qālū

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

فَقِيرٌۭ

(is) poor

faqīrun

وَنَحْنُ

while we

wanaḥnu

أَغْنِيَآءُ ۘ

(are) rich

aghniyāu

سَنَكْتُبُ

We will record

sanaktubu

مَا

what

قَالُوا۟

they said

qālū

وَقَتْلَهُمُ

and their killing

waqatlahumu

ٱلْأَنۢبِيَآءَ

the Prophets

l-anbiyāa

بِغَيْرِ

without

bighayri

حَقٍّۢ

(any) right

ḥaqqin

وَنَقُولُ

and We will say

wanaqūlu

ذُوقُوا۟

Taste

dhūqū

عَذَابَ

(the) punishment

ʿadhāba

ٱلْحَرِيقِ

(of) the Burning Fire

l-ḥarīqi

١٨١

Allāh has certainly heard the statement of those [Jews] who said, "Indeed, Allāh is poor, while we are rich." We will record what they said and their killing of the prophets without right and will say, "Taste the punishment of the Burning Fire.

— Saheeh International

ذَٰلِكَ

That

dhālika

بِمَا

(is) because

bimā

قَدَّمَتْ

(of what) sent forth

qaddamat

أَيْدِيكُمْ

your hands

aydīkum

وَأَنَّ

and that

wa-anna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

لَيْسَ

is not

laysa

بِظَلَّامٍۢ

unjust

biẓallāmin

لِّلْعَبِيدِ

to (His) slaves

lil'ʿabīdi

١٨٢

That is for what your hands have put forth and because Allāh is not ever unjust to [His] servants."

— Saheeh International

ٱلَّذِينَ

Those who

alladhīna

قَالُوٓا۟

said

qālū

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

عَهِدَ

(has) taken promise

ʿahida

إِلَيْنَآ

from us

ilaynā

أَلَّا

that not

allā

نُؤْمِنَ

we (should) believe

nu'mina

لِرَسُولٍ

in a Messenger

lirasūlin

حَتَّىٰ

until

ḥattā

يَأْتِيَنَا

he brings to us

yatiyanā

بِقُرْبَانٍۢ

a sacrifice

biqur'bānin

تَأْكُلُهُ

consumes it

takuluhu

ٱلنَّارُ ۗ

the fire

l-nāru

قُلْ

Say

qul

قَدْ

Surely

qad

جَآءَكُمْ

came to you

jāakum

رُسُلٌۭ

Messengers

rusulun

مِّن

from

min

قَبْلِى

before me

qablī

بِٱلْبَيِّنَـٰتِ

with the clear Signs

bil-bayināti

وَبِٱلَّذِى

and with what

wabi-alladhī

قُلْتُمْ

you speak

qul'tum

فَلِمَ

So why

falima

قَتَلْتُمُوهُمْ

you killed them

qataltumūhum

إِن

if

in

كُنتُمْ

you are

kuntum

صَـٰدِقِينَ

truthful

ṣādiqīna

١٨٣

[They are] those who said, "Indeed, Allāh has taken our promise not to believe any messenger until he brings us an offering which fire [from heaven] will consume." Say, "There have already come to you messengers before me with clear proofs and [even] that of which you speak. So why did you kill them, if you should be truthful?"

— Saheeh International

فَإِن

Then if

fa-in

كَذَّبُوكَ

they reject you

kadhabūka

فَقَدْ

then certainly

faqad

كُذِّبَ

were rejected

kudhiba

رُسُلٌۭ

Messengers

rusulun

مِّن

from

min

قَبْلِكَ

before you

qablika

جَآءُو

(who) came

jāū

بِٱلْبَيِّنَـٰتِ

with the clear Signs

bil-bayināti

وَٱلزُّبُرِ

and the Scriptures

wal-zuburi

وَٱلْكِتَـٰبِ

and the Book

wal-kitābi

ٱلْمُنِيرِ

[the] Enlightening

l-munīri

١٨٤

Then if they deny you, [O Muḥammad] - so were messengers denied before you, who brought clear proofs and written ordinances and the enlightening Scripture.1

— Saheeh International

كُلُّ

Every

kullu

نَفْسٍۢ

soul

nafsin

ذَآئِقَةُ

(will) taste

dhāiqatu

ٱلْمَوْتِ ۗ

[the] death

l-mawti

وَإِنَّمَا

and only

wa-innamā

تُوَفَّوْنَ

you will be paid in full

tuwaffawna

أُجُورَكُمْ

your reward

ujūrakum

يَوْمَ

(on the) Day

yawma

ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ ۖ

(of) [the] Resurrection

l-qiyāmati

فَمَن

Then whoever

faman

زُحْزِحَ

is drawn away

zuḥ'ziḥa

عَنِ

from

ʿani

ٱلنَّارِ

the Fire

l-nāri

وَأُدْخِلَ

and admitted

wa-ud'khila

ٱلْجَنَّةَ

(to) Paradise

l-janata

فَقَدْ

then surely

faqad

فَازَ ۗ

he is successful

fāza

وَمَا

And not

wamā

ٱلْحَيَوٰةُ

(is) the life

l-ḥayatu

ٱلدُّنْيَآ

(of) the world

l-dun'yā

إِلَّا

except

illā

مَتَـٰعُ

enjoyment

matāʿu

ٱلْغُرُورِ

(of) delusion

l-ghurūri

١٨٥

Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your [full] compensation on the Day of Resurrection. So he who is drawn away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has attained [his desire]. And what is the life of this world except the enjoyment of delusion.

— Saheeh International

۞ لَتُبْلَوُنَّ

You will certainly be tested

latub'lawunna

فِىٓ

in

أَمْوَٰلِكُمْ

your wealth

amwālikum

وَأَنفُسِكُمْ

and yourselves

wa-anfusikum

وَلَتَسْمَعُنَّ

And you will certainly hear

walatasmaʿunna

مِنَ

from

mina

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

أُوتُوا۟

were given

ūtū

ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ

the Book

l-kitāba

مِن

from

min

قَبْلِكُمْ

before you

qablikum

وَمِنَ

and from

wamina

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

أَشْرَكُوٓا۟

associate partners with Allah

ashrakū

أَذًۭى

hurtful things

adhan

كَثِيرًۭا ۚ

many

kathīran

وَإِن

and if

wa-in

تَصْبِرُوا۟

you are patient

taṣbirū

وَتَتَّقُوا۟

and fear (Allah)

watattaqū

فَإِنَّ

then indeed

fa-inna

ذَٰلِكَ

that

dhālika

مِنْ

(is) of

min

عَزْمِ

the matters

ʿazmi

ٱلْأُمُورِ

(of) determination

l-umūri

١٨٦

You will surely be tested in your possessions and in yourselves. And you will surely hear from those who were given the Scripture before you and from those who associate others with Allāh much abuse. But if you are patient and fear Allāh - indeed, that is of the matters [worthy] of resolve.

— Saheeh International

وَإِذْ

And when

wa-idh

أَخَذَ

took

akhadha

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

مِيثَـٰقَ

a Covenant

mīthāqa

ٱلَّذِينَ

(from) those who

alladhīna

أُوتُوا۟

were given

ūtū

ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ

the Book

l-kitāba

لَتُبَيِّنُنَّهُۥ

You certainly make it clear

latubayyinunnahu

لِلنَّاسِ

to the mankind

lilnnāsi

وَلَا

and (do) not

walā

تَكْتُمُونَهُۥ

conceal it

taktumūnahu

فَنَبَذُوهُ

Then they threw it

fanabadhūhu

وَرَآءَ

behind

warāa

ظُهُورِهِمْ

their backs

ẓuhūrihim

وَٱشْتَرَوْا۟

and they exchanged

wa-ish'taraw

بِهِۦ

[with] it

bihi

ثَمَنًۭا

(for) a price

thamanan

قَلِيلًۭا ۖ

little

qalīlan

فَبِئْسَ

And wretched

fabi'sa

مَا

(is) what

يَشْتَرُونَ

they purchase

yashtarūna

١٨٧

And [mention, O Muḥammad], when Allāh took a covenant from those who were given the Scripture, [saying], "You must make it clear [i.e., explain it] to the people and not conceal it." But they threw it away behind their backs and exchanged it for a small price. And wretched is that which they purchased.

— Saheeh International

لَا

(Do) not

تَحْسَبَنَّ

think

taḥsabanna

ٱلَّذِينَ

(that) those who

alladhīna

يَفْرَحُونَ

rejoice

yafraḥūna

بِمَآ

in what

bimā

أَتَوا۟

(they have) brought

ataw

وَّيُحِبُّونَ

and they love

wayuḥibbūna

أَن

that

an

يُحْمَدُوا۟

they be praised

yuḥ'madū

بِمَا

for what

bimā

لَمْ

not

lam

يَفْعَلُوا۟

they do

yafʿalū

فَلَا

so (do) not

falā

تَحْسَبَنَّهُم

think (that) they

taḥsabannahum

بِمَفَازَةٍۢ

(will) escape

bimafāzatin

مِّنَ

from

mina

ٱلْعَذَابِ ۖ

the punishment

l-ʿadhābi

وَلَهُمْ

and for them

walahum

عَذَابٌ

(is a) punishment

ʿadhābun

أَلِيمٌۭ

painful

alīmun

١٨٨

And never think that those who rejoice in what they have perpetrated and like to be praised for what they did not do - never think them [to be] in safety from the punishment, and for them is a painful punishment.

— Saheeh International

وَلِلَّهِ

And for Allah

walillahi

مُلْكُ

(is the) dominion

mul'ku

ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ

(of) the heavens

l-samāwāti

وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۗ

and the earth

wal-arḍi

وَٱللَّهُ

and Allah

wal-lahu

عَلَىٰ

(is) on

ʿalā

كُلِّ

every

kulli

شَىْءٍۢ

thing

shayin

قَدِيرٌ

All-Powerful

qadīrun

١٨٩

And to Allāh belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and Allāh is over all things competent.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

فِى

in

خَلْقِ

(the) creation

khalqi

ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ

(of) the heavens

l-samāwāti

وَٱلْأَرْضِ

and the earth

wal-arḍi

وَٱخْتِلَـٰفِ

and (in the) alternation

wa-ikh'tilāfi

ٱلَّيْلِ

(of) the night

al-layli

وَٱلنَّهَارِ

and the day

wal-nahāri

لَـَٔايَـٰتٍۢ

(are) surely Signs

laāyātin

لِّأُو۟لِى

for men

li-ulī

ٱلْأَلْبَـٰبِ

(of) understanding

l-albābi

١٩٠

Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding -

— Saheeh International

ٱلَّذِينَ

Those who

alladhīna

يَذْكُرُونَ

remember

yadhkurūna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

قِيَـٰمًۭا

standing

qiyāman

وَقُعُودًۭا

and sitting

waquʿūdan

وَعَلَىٰ

and on

waʿalā

جُنُوبِهِمْ

their sides

junūbihim

وَيَتَفَكَّرُونَ

and they reflect

wayatafakkarūna

فِى

on

خَلْقِ

(the) creation

khalqi

ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ

(of) the heavens

l-samāwāti

وَٱلْأَرْضِ

and the earth

wal-arḍi

رَبَّنَا

Our Lord

rabbanā

مَا

not

خَلَقْتَ

You have created

khalaqta

هَـٰذَا

this

hādhā

بَـٰطِلًۭا

(in) vain

bāṭilan

سُبْحَـٰنَكَ

Glory be to You

sub'ḥānaka

فَقِنَا

so save us

faqinā

عَذَابَ

(from the) punishment

ʿadhāba

ٱلنَّارِ

(of) the Fire

l-nāri

١٩١

Who remember Allāh while standing or sitting or [lying] on their sides and give thought to the creation of the heavens and the earth, [saying], "Our Lord, You did not create this aimlessly; exalted are You [above such a thing]; then protect us from the punishment of the Fire.

— Saheeh International

رَبَّنَآ

Our Lord

rabbanā

إِنَّكَ

indeed [You]

innaka

مَن

whom

man

تُدْخِلِ

You admit

tud'khili

ٱلنَّارَ

(to) the Fire

l-nāra

فَقَدْ

then surely

faqad

أَخْزَيْتَهُۥ ۖ

You (have) disgraced him

akhzaytahu

وَمَا

and not

wamā

لِلظَّـٰلِمِينَ

for the wrongdoers

lilẓẓālimīna

مِنْ

(are) any

min

أَنصَارٍۢ

helpers

anṣārin

١٩٢

Our Lord, indeed whoever You admit to the Fire - You have disgraced him, and for the wrongdoers there are no helpers.

— Saheeh International

رَّبَّنَآ

Our Lord

rabbanā

إِنَّنَا

indeed we

innanā

سَمِعْنَا

[we] heard

samiʿ'nā

مُنَادِيًۭا

a caller

munādiyan

يُنَادِى

calling

yunādī

لِلْإِيمَـٰنِ

to the faith

lil'īmāni

أَنْ

that

an

ءَامِنُوا۟

Believe

āminū

بِرَبِّكُمْ

in your Lord

birabbikum

فَـَٔامَنَّا ۚ

so we have believed

faāmannā

رَبَّنَا

Our Lord

rabbanā

فَٱغْفِرْ

so forgive

fa-igh'fir

لَنَا

for us

lanā

ذُنُوبَنَا

our sins

dhunūbanā

وَكَفِّرْ

and remove

wakaffir

عَنَّا

from us

ʿannā

سَيِّـَٔاتِنَا

our evil deeds

sayyiātinā

وَتَوَفَّنَا

and cause us to die

watawaffanā

مَعَ

with

maʿa

ٱلْأَبْرَارِ

the righteous

l-abrāri

١٩٣

Our Lord, indeed we have heard a caller [i.e., Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ)] calling to faith, [saying], 'Believe in your Lord,' and we have believed. Our Lord, so forgive us our sins and remove from us our misdeeds and cause us to die among the righteous.

— Saheeh International

رَبَّنَا

Our Lord

rabbanā

وَءَاتِنَا

grant us

waātinā

مَا

what

وَعَدتَّنَا

You promised us

waʿadttanā

عَلَىٰ

through

ʿalā

رُسُلِكَ

Your Messengers

rusulika

وَلَا

and (do) not

walā

تُخْزِنَا

disgrace us

tukh'zinā

يَوْمَ

(on the) Day

yawma

ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ ۗ

(of) [the] Resurrection

l-qiyāmati

إِنَّكَ

Indeed, You

innaka

لَا

(do) not

تُخْلِفُ

break

tukh'lifu

ٱلْمِيعَادَ

the promise

l-mīʿāda

١٩٤

Our Lord, and grant us what You promised us through Your messengers and do not disgrace us on the Day of Resurrection. Indeed, You do not fail in [Your] promise."

— Saheeh International

فَٱسْتَجَابَ

Then responded

fa-is'tajāba

لَهُمْ

to them

lahum

رَبُّهُمْ

their Lord

rabbuhum

أَنِّى

Indeed, I

annī

لَآ

(will) not

أُضِيعُ

(let go) waste

uḍīʿu

عَمَلَ

deeds

ʿamala

عَـٰمِلٍۢ

(of the) doer

ʿāmilin

مِّنكُم

among you

minkum

مِّن

[from]

min

ذَكَرٍ

(whether) male

dhakarin

أَوْ

or

aw

أُنثَىٰ ۖ

female

unthā

بَعْضُكُم

each of you

baʿḍukum

مِّنۢ

from

min

بَعْضٍۢ ۖ

(the) other

baʿḍin

فَٱلَّذِينَ

So those who

fa-alladhīna

هَاجَرُوا۟

emigrated

hājarū

وَأُخْرِجُوا۟

and were driven out

wa-ukh'rijū

مِن

from

min

دِيَـٰرِهِمْ

their homes

diyārihim

وَأُوذُوا۟

and were harmed

waūdhū

فِى

in

سَبِيلِى

My way

sabīlī

وَقَـٰتَلُوا۟

and fought

waqātalū

وَقُتِلُوا۟

and were killed

waqutilū

لَأُكَفِّرَنَّ

surely I (will) remove

la-ukaffiranna

عَنْهُمْ

from them

ʿanhum

سَيِّـَٔاتِهِمْ

their evil deeds

sayyiātihim

وَلَأُدْخِلَنَّهُمْ

and surely I will admit them

wala-ud'khilannahum

جَنَّـٰتٍۢ

(to) Gardens

jannātin

تَجْرِى

flowing

tajrī

مِن

from

min

تَحْتِهَا

underneath them

taḥtihā

ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ

the rivers

l-anhāru

ثَوَابًۭا

a reward

thawāban

مِّنْ

from

min

عِندِ

[near]

ʿindi

ٱللَّهِ ۗ

Allah

l-lahi

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

عِندَهُۥ

with Him

ʿindahu

حُسْنُ

(is the) best

ḥus'nu

ٱلثَّوَابِ

reward

l-thawābi

١٩٥

And their Lord responded to them, "Never will I allow to be lost the work of [any] worker among you, whether male or female; you are of one another. So those who emigrated or were evicted from their homes or were harmed in My cause or fought or were killed - I will surely remove from them their misdeeds, and I will surely admit them to gardens beneath which rivers flow as reward from Allāh, and Allāh has with Him the best reward."

— Saheeh International

لَا

(Let) not

يَغُرَّنَّكَ

deceive you

yaghurrannaka

تَقَلُّبُ

(the) movement

taqallubu

ٱلَّذِينَ

(of) those who

alladhīna

كَفَرُوا۟

disbelieved

kafarū

فِى

in

ٱلْبِلَـٰدِ

the land

l-bilādi

١٩٦

Be not deceived by the [uninhibited] movement of the disbelievers throughout the land.

— Saheeh International

مَتَـٰعٌۭ

An enjoyment

matāʿun

قَلِيلٌۭ

little

qalīlun

ثُمَّ

then

thumma

مَأْوَىٰهُمْ

their abode

mawāhum

جَهَنَّمُ ۚ

(is) hell

jahannamu

وَبِئْسَ

[and] a wretched

wabi'sa

ٱلْمِهَادُ

[the] resting place

l-mihādu

١٩٧

[It is but] a small enjoyment; then their [final] refuge is Hell, and wretched is the resting place.

— Saheeh International

لَـٰكِنِ

But

lākini

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

ٱتَّقَوْا۟

fear

ittaqaw

رَبَّهُمْ

their Lord

rabbahum

لَهُمْ

for them

lahum

جَنَّـٰتٌۭ

(will be) Gardens

jannātun

تَجْرِى

flows

tajrī

مِن

from

min

تَحْتِهَا

underneath them

taḥtihā

ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ

the rivers

l-anhāru

خَـٰلِدِينَ

will abide forever

khālidīna

فِيهَا

in it

fīhā

نُزُلًۭا

a hospitality

nuzulan

مِّنْ

from

min

عِندِ

[near]

ʿindi

ٱللَّهِ ۗ

Allah

l-lahi

وَمَا

And what

wamā

عِندَ

(is) with

ʿinda

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

خَيْرٌۭ

(is) best

khayrun

لِّلْأَبْرَارِ

for the righteous

lil'abrāri

١٩٨

But those who feared their Lord will have gardens beneath which rivers flow, abiding eternally therein, as accommodation from Allāh. And that which is with Allāh is best for the righteous.

— Saheeh International

وَإِنَّ

And indeed

wa-inna

مِنْ

among

min

أَهْلِ

(the) People

ahli

ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ

(of) the Book

l-kitābi

لَمَن

(are those) who

laman

يُؤْمِنُ

believe

yu'minu

بِٱللَّهِ

in Allah

bil-lahi

وَمَآ

and what

wamā

أُنزِلَ

was revealed

unzila

إِلَيْكُمْ

to you

ilaykum

وَمَآ

and what

wamā

أُنزِلَ

was revealed

unzila

إِلَيْهِمْ

to them

ilayhim

خَـٰشِعِينَ

humbly submissive

khāshiʿīna

لِلَّهِ

to Allah

lillahi

لَا

Not

يَشْتَرُونَ

(do) they exchange

yashtarūna

بِـَٔايَـٰتِ

[with] (the) Verses

biāyāti

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

ثَمَنًۭا

(for) a price

thamanan

قَلِيلًا ۗ

little

qalīlan

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

Those

ulāika

لَهُمْ

for them

lahum

أَجْرُهُمْ

their reward

ajruhum

عِندَ

(is) with

ʿinda

رَبِّهِمْ ۗ

their Lord

rabbihim

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

سَرِيعُ

(is) swift

sarīʿu

ٱلْحِسَابِ

(in taking) the account

l-ḥisābi

١٩٩

And indeed, among the People of the Scripture are those who believe in Allāh and what was revealed to you and what was revealed to them, [being] humbly submissive to Allāh. They do not exchange the verses of Allāh for a small price. Those will have their reward with their Lord. Indeed, Allāh is swift in account.

— Saheeh International

يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا

O you

yāayyuhā

ٱلَّذِينَ

who

alladhīna

ءَامَنُوا۟

believe[d]

āmanū

ٱصْبِرُوا۟

Be steadfast

iṣ'birū

وَصَابِرُوا۟

and [be] patient

waṣābirū

وَرَابِطُوا۟

and [be] constant

warābiṭū

وَٱتَّقُوا۟

and fear

wa-ittaqū

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

لَعَلَّكُمْ

so that you may

laʿallakum

تُفْلِحُونَ

(be) successful

tuf'liḥūna

٢٠٠

O you who have believed, persevere1 and endure2 and remain stationed3 and fear Allāh that you may be successful.

— Saheeh International
