تِلْكَ These til'ka (are the) Verses āyātu (of) the Book l-kitābi the clear l-mubīni
These are verses of the clear Book.
نَتْلُوا۟ We recite natlū to you ʿalayka from min (the) news naba-i (of) Musa mūsā and Firaun wafir'ʿawna in truth bil-ḥaqi for a people liqawmin who believe yu'minūna
We recite to you from the news of Moses and Pharaoh in truth for a people who believe.
إِنَّ Indeed inna Firaun fir'ʿawna exalted himself ʿalā in fī the land l-arḍi and made wajaʿala its people ahlahā (into) sects shiyaʿan oppressing yastaḍʿifu a group ṭāifatan among them min'hum slaughtering yudhabbiḥu their sons abnāahum and letting live wayastaḥyī their women nisāahum Indeed, he innahu was kāna of mina the corrupters l-muf'sidīna
Indeed, Pharaoh exalted himself in the land and made its people into factions, oppressing a sector among them, slaughtering their [newborn] sons and keeping their females alive. Indeed, he was of the corrupters.
وَنُرِيدُ And We wanted wanurīdu to an bestow a favor namunna upon ʿalā those who alladhīna were oppressed us'tuḍ'ʿifū in fī the land l-arḍi and make them wanajʿalahum leaders a-immatan and make them wanajʿalahumu the inheritors l-wārithīna
And We wanted to confer favor upon those who were oppressed in the land and make them leaders and make them inheritors
وَنُمَكِّنَ And [We] establish wanumakkina them lahum in fī the land l-arḍi and show wanuriya Firaun fir'ʿawna and Haman wahāmāna and their hosts wajunūdahumā through them min'hum what mā they were kānū fearing yaḥdharūna
And establish them in the land and show Pharaoh and [his minister] Hāmān and their soldiers through them1 that which they had feared.
وَأَوْحَيْنَآ And We inspired wa-awḥaynā [to] ilā (the) mother ummi (of) Musa mūsā that an Suckle him arḍiʿīhi but when fa-idhā you fear khif'ti for him ʿalayhi then cast him fa-alqīhi in(to) fī the river l-yami and (do) not walā fear takhāfī and (do) not walā grieve taḥzanī Indeed, We innā (will) restore him rāddūhu to you ilayki and (will) make him wajāʿilūhu of mina the Messengers l-mur'salīna
And We inspired to the mother of Moses, "Suckle him; but when you fear for him, cast him into the river and do not fear and do not grieve. Indeed, We will return him to you and will make him [one] of the messengers."
فَٱلْتَقَطَهُۥٓ Then picked him up fal-taqaṭahu (the) family ālu (of) Firaun fir'ʿawna so that he might become liyakūna to them lahum an enemy ʿaduwwan and a grief waḥazanan Indeed inna Firaun fir'ʿawna and Haman wahāmāna and their hosts wajunūdahumā were kānū sinners khāṭiīna
And the family of Pharaoh picked him up [out of the river] so that he would become to them an enemy and a [cause of] grief. Indeed, Pharaoh and Hāmān and their soldiers were deliberate sinners.
وَقَالَتِ And said waqālati (the) wife im'ra-atu (of) Firaun fir'ʿawna A comfort qurratu (of the) eye ʿaynin for me lī and for you walaka (Do) not lā kill him taqtulūhu perhaps ʿasā (that) an he may benefit us yanfaʿanā or aw we may take him nattakhidhahu (as) a son waladan And they wahum (did) not lā perceive yashʿurūna
And the wife of Pharaoh said, "[He will be] a comfort of the eye [i.e., pleasure] for me and for you. Do not kill him; perhaps he may benefit us, or we may adopt him as a son." And they perceived not.1
وَأَصْبَحَ And became wa-aṣbaḥa (the) heart fuādu (of the) mother ummi (of) Musa mūsā empty fārighan That in she was near kādat (to) disclosing latub'dī about him bihi if not lawlā that an We strengthened rabaṭnā [over] ʿalā her heart qalbihā so that she would be litakūna of mina the believers l-mu'minīna
And the heart of Moses' mother became empty [of all else]. She was about to disclose [the matter concerning] him had We not bound fast her heart that she would be of the believers.
وَقَالَتْ And she said waqālat to his sister li-ukh'tihi Follow him quṣṣīhi So she watched fabaṣurat him bihi from ʿan a distance junubin while they wahum (did) not lā perceive yashʿurūna
And she said to his sister, "Follow him"; so she watched him from a distance while they perceived not.
۞ وَحَرَّمْنَا And We had forbidden waḥarramnā for him ʿalayhi the wet nurses l-marāḍiʿa before min before qablu so she said faqālat Shall I hal direct you adullukum to ʿalā (the) people ahli (of) a house baytin who will rear him yakfulūnahu for you lakum while they wahum to him lahu (will be) sincere nāṣiḥūna
And We had prevented from him [all] wet nurses before,1 so she said, "Shall I direct you to a household that will be responsible for him for you while they are to him [for his upbringing] sincere?"
فَرَدَدْنَـٰهُ So We restored him faradadnāhu to ilā his mother ummihi that kay might be comforted taqarra her eye ʿaynuhā and not walā she may grieve taḥzana and that she would know walitaʿlama that anna the Promise of Allah waʿda the Promise of Allah l-lahi (is) true ḥaqqun But walākinna most of them aktharahum (do) not lā know yaʿlamūna
So We restored him to his mother that she might be content and not grieve and that she would know that the promise of Allāh is true. But most of them [i.e., the people] do not know.
وَلَمَّا And when walammā he reached balagha his full strength ashuddahu and became mature wa-is'tawā We bestowed upon him ātaynāhu wisdom ḥuk'man and knowledge waʿil'man And thus wakadhālika We reward najzī the good-doers l-muḥ'sinīna
And when he attained his full strength and was [mentally] mature, We bestowed upon him judgement and knowledge. And thus do We reward the doers of good.
وَدَخَلَ And he entered wadakhala the city l-madīnata at ʿalā a time ḥīni (of) inattention ghaflatin of min its people ahlihā and found fawajada therein fīhā two men rajulayni fighting each other yaqtatilāni this hādhā of min his party shīʿatihi and this wahādhā of min his enemy ʿaduwwihi And called him for help fa-is'taghāthahu the one who alladhī (was) from min his party shīʿatihi against ʿalā the one who alladhī (was) from min his enemy ʿaduwwihi so Musa struck him with his fist fawakazahu so Musa struck him with his fist mūsā and killed him faqaḍā and killed him ʿalayhi He said qāla This (is) hādhā of min (the) deed ʿamali (of) Shaitaan l-shayṭāni Indeed, he innahu (is) an enemy ʿaduwwun one who misleads muḍillun clearly mubīnun
And he entered the city at a time of inattention by its people1 and found therein two men fighting: one from his faction and one from among his enemy. And the one from his faction called for help to him against the one from his enemy, so Moses struck him and [unintentionally] killed him. [Moses] said, "This is from the work of Satan. Indeed, he is a manifest, misleading enemy."
قَالَ He said qāla My Lord rabbi Indeed, I innī [I] have wronged ẓalamtu my soul nafsī so forgive fa-igh'fir [for] me lī Then He forgave faghafara [for] him lahu Indeed He innahu He (is) huwa the Oft-Forgiving l-ghafūru the Most Merciful l-raḥīmu
He said, "My Lord, indeed I have wronged myself, so forgive me," and He forgave him. Indeed, He is the Forgiving, the Merciful.
قَالَ He said qāla My Lord rabbi Because bimā You have favored anʿamta [on] me ʿalayya so not falan I will be akūna a supporter ẓahīran (of) the criminals lil'muj'rimīna
He said, "My Lord, for the favor You bestowed upon me, I will never be an assistant to the criminals."
فَأَصْبَحَ In the morning he was fa-aṣbaḥa in fī the city l-madīnati fearful khāifan (and) was vigilant yataraqqabu when behold fa-idhā The one who alladhī sought his help is'tanṣarahu the previous day bil-amsi cried out to him for help yastaṣrikhuhu Said qāla to him lahu Musa mūsā Indeed, you innaka (are) surely a deviator laghawiyyun clear mubīnun
And he became inside the city fearful and anticipating [exposure], when suddenly the one who sought his help the previous day cried out to him [once again]. Moses said to him, "Indeed, you are an evident, [persistent] deviator."
فَلَمَّآ Then when falammā [that] an he wanted arāda to an strike yabṭisha the one who bi-alladhī [he] (was) huwa an enemy ʿaduwwun to both of them lahumā he said qāla O Musa yāmūsā Do you intend aturīdu to an kill me taqtulanī as kamā you killed qatalta a person nafsan yesterday bil-amsi Not in you want turīdu but illā that an you become takūna a tyrant jabbāran in fī the earth l-arḍi and not wamā you want turīdu that an you be takūna of mina the reformers l-muṣ'liḥīna
And when he wanted to strike the one who was an enemy to both of them, he1 said, "O Moses, do you intend to kill me as you killed someone yesterday? You only want to be a tyrant in the land and do not want to be of the amenders."
وَجَآءَ And came wajāa a man rajulun from min (the) farthest end aqṣā (of) the city l-madīnati running yasʿā He said qāla O Musa yāmūsā Indeed inna the chiefs l-mala-a are taking counsel yatamirūna about you bika to kill you liyaqtulūka so leave fa-ukh'ruj indeed, I am innī to you laka of mina the sincere advisors l-nāṣiḥīna
And a man came from the farthest end of the city, running. He said, "O Moses, indeed the eminent ones are conferring over you [intending] to kill you, so leave [the city]; indeed, I am to you of the sincere advisors."
فَخَرَجَ So he left fakharaja from it min'hā fearing khāifan (and) vigilant yataraqqabu He said qāla My Lord rabbi Save me najjinī from mina the people l-qawmi the wrongdoers l-ẓālimīna
So he left it, fearful and anticipating [apprehension]. He said, "My Lord, save me from the wrongdoing people."
وَلَمَّا And when walammā he turned his face tawajjaha towards til'qāa Madyan madyana he said qāla Perhaps ʿasā my Lord rabbī [that] an will guide me yahdiyanī (to the) sound sawāa way l-sabīli
And when he directed himself toward Madyan, he said, "Perhaps my Lord will guide me to the sound way."
وَلَمَّا And when walammā he came warada (to the) water māa (of) Madyan madyana he found wajada on it ʿalayhi a group ummatan of mina men l-nāsi watering yasqūna and he found wawajada besides them min besides them dūnihimu two women im'ra-atayni keeping back tadhūdāni He said qāla What mā (is the) matter with both of you khaṭbukumā They said qālatā We cannot water lā We cannot water nasqī until ḥattā take away yuṣ'dira the shepherds l-riʿāu and our father wa-abūnā (is) a very old man shaykhun (is) a very old man kabīrun
And when he came to the water [i.e., well] of Madyan, he found there a crowd of people watering [their flocks], and he found aside from them two women holding back [their flocks]. He said, "What is your circumstance?" They said, "We do not water until the shepherds dispatch [their flocks]; and our father is an old man."
فَسَقَىٰ So he watered fasaqā for them lahumā Then thumma he turned back tawallā to ilā the shade l-ẓili and said faqāla My Lord rabbi Indeed, I am innī of whatever limā You send anzalta to me ilayya of min good khayrin (in) need faqīrun
So he watered [their flocks] for them; then he went back to the shade and said, "My Lord, indeed I am, for whatever good You would send down to me, in need."
فَجَآءَتْهُ Then came to him fajāathu one of the two women iḥ'dāhumā walking tamshī with ʿalā shyness is'tiḥ'yāin She said qālat Indeed inna my father abī calls you yadʿūka that he may reward you liyajziyaka (the) reward ajra (for) what mā you watered saqayta for us lanā So when falammā he came to him jāahu and narrated waqaṣṣa to him ʿalayhi the story l-qaṣaṣa he said qāla (Do) not lā fear takhaf You have escaped najawta from mina the people l-qawmi the wrongdoers l-ẓālimīna
Then one of the two women came to him walking with shyness. She said, "Indeed, my father invites you that he may reward you for having watered for us." So when he came to him1 and related to him the story, he said, "Fear not. You have escaped from the wrongdoing people."
قَالَتْ Said qālat one of them iḥ'dāhumā O my father yāabati Hire him is'tajir'hu Indeed inna (the) best khayra whom mani you (can) hire is'tajarta (is) the strong l-qawiyu the trustworthy l-amīnu
One of the women said, "O my father, hire him. Indeed, the best one you can hire is the strong and the trustworthy."
قَالَ He said qāla Indeed, I innī [I] wish urīdu to an marry you to unkiḥaka one iḥ'dā (of) my daughters ib'natayya (of) these two hātayni on ʿalā that an you serve me tajuranī (for) eight thamāniya years ḥijajin but if fa-in you complete atmamta ten ʿashran then from famin you ʿindika And not wamā I wish urīdu to an make it difficult ashuqqa for you ʿalayka You will find me satajidunī if in Allah wills shāa Allah wills l-lahu of mina the righteous l-ṣāliḥīna
He said, "Indeed, I wish to wed you one of these, my two daughters, on [the condition] that you serve me for eight years; but if you complete ten, it will be [as a favor] from you. And I do not wish to put you in difficulty. You will find me, if Allāh wills, from among the righteous."
قَالَ He said qāla That dhālika (is) between me baynī and between you wabaynaka Whichever ayyamā (of) the two terms l-ajalayni I complete qaḍaytu then no falā injustice ʿud'wāna to me ʿalayya and Allah wal-lahu over ʿalā what mā we say naqūlu (is) a Witness wakīlun
[Moses] said, "That is [established] between me and you. Whichever of the two terms I complete - there is no injustice to me, and Allāh, over what we say, is Witness."
۞ فَلَمَّا Then when falammā Musa fulfilled qaḍā Musa fulfilled mūsā the term l-ajala and was traveling wasāra with his family bi-ahlihi he saw ānasa in min (the) direction jānibi (of) Mount Tur l-ṭūri a fire nāran He said qāla to his family li-ahlihi Stay here um'kuthū indeed, I innī [I] perceive ānastu a fire nāran Perhaps laʿallī I will bring you ātīkum from there min'hā some information bikhabarin or aw a burning wood jadhwatin from mina the fire l-nāri so that you may laʿallakum warm yourselves taṣṭalūna
And when Moses had completed the term and was traveling with his family, he perceived from the direction of the mount a fire. He said to his family, "Stay here; indeed, I have perceived a fire. Perhaps I will bring you from there [some] information or burning wood from the fire that you may warm yourselves."
فَلَمَّآ But when falammā he came (to) it atāhā he was called nūdiya from min (the) side shāṭi-i (of) the valley l-wādi the right l-aymani in fī the place even l-buq'ʿati blessed l-mubārakati from mina the tree l-shajarati that an O Musa yāmūsā Indeed innī I Am anā Allah l-lahu (the) Lord rabbu (of) the worlds l-ʿālamīna
But when he came to it, he was called from the right side of the valley in a blessed spot - from the tree,1 "O Moses, indeed I am Allāh, Lord of the worlds."
وَأَنْ And [that] wa-an throw alqi your staff ʿaṣāka But when falammā he saw it raāhā moving tahtazzu as if it ka-annahā (were) a snake jānnun he turned wallā (in) flight mud'biran and (did) not walam return yuʿaqqib O Musa yāmūsā Draw near aqbil and (do) not walā fear takhaf Indeed, you innaka (are) of mina the secure l-āminīna
And [he was told], "Throw down your staff." But when he saw it writhing as if it was a snake, he turned in flight and did not return.1 [Allāh said], "O Moses, approach and fear not. Indeed, you are of the secure.
ٱسْلُكْ Insert us'luk your hand yadaka in fī your bosom jaybika it will come forth takhruj white bayḍāa without min without ghayri any harm sūin And draw wa-uḍ'mum to yourselves ilayka your hand janāḥaka against mina fear l-rahbi So these fadhānika (are) two evidences bur'hānāni from min your Lord rabbika to ilā Firaun fir'ʿawna and his chiefs wamala-ihi Indeed, they innahum are kānū a people qawman defiantly disobedient fāsiqīna
Insert your hand into the opening of your garment; it will come out white, without disease. And draw in your arm close to you [as prevention] from fear, for those are two proofs from your Lord to Pharaoh and his establishment. Indeed, they have been a people defiantly disobedient."
قَالَ He said qāla My Lord rabbi Indeed innī I killed qataltu of them min'hum a man nafsan and I fear fa-akhāfu that an they will kill me yaqtulūni
He said, "My Lord, indeed I killed from among them someone, and I fear they will kill me.
وَأَخِى And my brother wa-akhī Harun hārūnu he huwa (is) more eloquent afṣaḥu than me minnī (in) speech lisānan so send him fa-arsil'hu with me maʿiya (as) a helper rid'an who will confirm me yuṣaddiqunī Indeed innī I fear akhāfu that an they will deny me yukadhibūni
And my brother Aaron is more fluent than me in tongue, so send him with me as support, verifying me. Indeed, I fear that they will deny me."
قَالَ He said qāla We will strengthen sanashuddu your arm ʿaḍudaka through your brother bi-akhīka and We will make wanajʿalu for both of you lakumā an authority sul'ṭānan so not falā they will reach yaṣilūna to both of you ilaykumā Through Our Signs biāyātinā you two antumā and (those) who wamani follow you ittabaʿakumā (will) be the dominant l-ghālibūna
[Allāh] said, "We will strengthen your arm through your brother and grant you both supremacy so they will not reach you. [It will be] through Our signs; you and those who follow you will be the predominant."
فَلَمَّا But when falammā came to them jāahum Musa mūsā with Our Signs biāyātinā clear bayyinātin they said qālū Not mā (is) this hādhā except illā a magic siḥ'run invented muf'taran and not wamā we heard samiʿ'nā of this bihādhā among fī our forefathers ābāinā our forefathers l-awalīna
But when Moses came to them with Our signs as clear evidences, they said, "This is not except invented magic, and we have not heard of this [religion] among our forefathers."
وَقَالَ And Musa said waqāla And Musa said mūsā My Lord rabbī knows best aʿlamu of who biman has come jāa with [the] guidance bil-hudā from Him min from Him ʿindihi and who waman will be takūnu for him lahu the good end in the Hereafter ʿāqibatu the good end in the Hereafter l-dāri Indeed innahu not lā will be successful yuf'liḥu the wrongdoers l-ẓālimūna
And Moses said, "My Lord is more knowing [than we or you] of who has come with guidance from Him and to whom will be succession in the home.1 Indeed, wrongdoers do not succeed."
وَقَالَ And Firaun said waqāla And Firaun said fir'ʿawnu O chiefs yāayyuhā O chiefs l-mala-u Not mā I know ʿalim'tu for you lakum any min god ilāhin other than me ghayrī So kindle fa-awqid for me lī O Haman yāhāmānu Upon ʿalā the clay l-ṭīni and make fa-ij'ʿal for me lī a lofty tower ṣarḥan so that [I] laʿallī I may look aṭṭaliʿu at ilā (the) God ilāhi (of) Musa mūsā And indeed, I wa-innī [I] think that he la-aẓunnuhu (is) of mina the liars l-kādhibīna
And Pharaoh said, "O eminent ones, I have not known you to have a god other than me. Then ignite for me, O Hāmān, [a fire] upon the clay1 and make for me a tower that I may look at the God of Moses. And indeed, I do think he is among the liars."
وَٱسْتَكْبَرَ And he was arrogant wa-is'takbara And he was arrogant huwa and his hosts wajunūduhu in fī the land l-arḍi without bighayri right l-ḥaqi and they thought waẓannū that they annahum to Us ilaynā not lā will be returned yur'jaʿūna
And he was arrogant, he and his soldiers, in the land, without right, and they thought that they would not be returned to Us.
فَأَخَذْنَـٰهُ So We seized him fa-akhadhnāhu and his hosts wajunūdahu and We threw them fanabadhnāhum in fī the sea l-yami So see fa-unẓur how kayfa was kāna (the) end ʿāqibatu (of) the wrongdoers l-ẓālimīna
So We took him and his soldiers and threw them into the sea.1 So see how was the end of the wrongdoers.
وَجَعَلْنَـٰهُمْ And We made them wajaʿalnāhum leaders a-immatan inviting yadʿūna to ilā the Fire l-nāri and (on the) Day wayawma (of) the Resurrection l-qiyāmati not lā they will be helped yunṣarūna
And We made them leaders1 inviting to the Fire, and on the Day of Resurrection they will not be helped.
وَأَتْبَعْنَـٰهُمْ And We caused to follow them wa-atbaʿnāhum in fī this hādhihi world l-dun'yā a curse laʿnatan and (on the) Day wayawma (of) the Resurrection l-qiyāmati they hum (will be) of mina the despised l-maqbūḥīna
And We caused to overtake them in this world a curse, and on the Day of Resurrection they will be of the despised.1
وَلَقَدْ And verily walaqad We gave ātaynā Musa mūsā the Scripture l-kitāba after [what] min after [what] baʿdi after [what] mā We had destroyed ahlaknā the generations l-qurūna former l-ūlā (as) an enlightenment baṣāira for the mankind lilnnāsi and a guidance wahudan and mercy waraḥmatan that they may laʿallahum remember yatadhakkarūna
And We gave Moses the Scripture, after We had destroyed the former generations, as enlightenment for the people and guidance and mercy that they might be reminded.
وَمَا And not wamā you were kunta on (the) side bijānibi western l-gharbiyi when idh We decreed qaḍaynā to ilā Musa mūsā the Commandment l-amra and not wamā you were kunta among mina the witnesses l-shāhidīna
And you, [O Muḥammad], were not on the western side [of the mount] when We revealed to Moses the command, and you were not among the witnesses [to that].
وَلَـٰكِنَّآ But We walākinnā [We] produced anshanā generations qurūnan and prolonged fataṭāwala for them ʿalayhimu the life l-ʿumuru And not wamā you were kunta a dweller thāwiyan among fī (the) people ahli (of) Madyan madyana reciting tatlū to them ʿalayhim Our Verses āyātinā but We walākinnā [We] were kunnā the Senders mur'silīna
But We produced [many] generations [after Moses], and prolonged was their duration.1 And you were not a resident among the people of Madyan, reciting to them Our verses, but We were senders [of this message].2
وَمَا And not wamā you were kunta at (the) side bijānibi (of) the Tur l-ṭūri when idh We called nādaynā But walākin (as) a mercy raḥmatan from min your Lord rabbika so that you warn litundhira a people qawman not mā (had) come to them atāhum any min warner nadhīrin before you min before you qablika so that they may laʿallahum remember yatadhakkarūna
And you were not at the side of the mount when We called [Moses] but [were sent] as a mercy from your Lord to warn a people to whom no warner had come before you that they might be reminded.
وَلَوْلَآ And if not walawlā [that] an struck them tuṣībahum a disaster muṣībatun for what bimā had sent forth qaddamat their hands aydīhim and they would say fayaqūlū Our Lord rabbanā Why not lawlā You sent arsalta to us ilaynā a Messenger rasūlan so we (could have) followed fanattabiʿa Your Verses āyātika and we (would) have been wanakūna of mina the believers l-mu'minīna
And if not that a disaster should strike them for what their hands put forth [of sins] and they would say, "Our Lord, why did You not send us a messenger so we could have followed Your verses and been among the believers?"...1
فَلَمَّا But when falammā came to them jāahumu the truth l-ḥaqu from Us min from Us ʿindinā they said qālū Why not lawlā he was given ūtiya (the) like mith'la (of) what mā was given ūtiya (to) Musa mūsā Did not awalam they disbelieve yakfurū in what bimā was given ūtiya (to) Musa mūsā before min before qablu They said qālū Two magic (works) siḥ'rāni supporting each other taẓāharā And they said waqālū Indeed, we innā in all bikullin (are) disbelievers kāfirūna
But when the truth came to them from Us, they said, "Why was he not given like that which was given to Moses?" Did they not disbelieve in that which was given to Moses before? They said, "[They are but] two works of magic supporting each other,1 and indeed we are, in both, disbelievers."
قُلْ Say qul Then bring fatū a Book bikitābin from Allah min from Allah ʿindi from Allah l-lahi which huwa (is) a better guide ahdā than both of them min'humā that I may follow it attabiʿ'hu if in you are kuntum truthful ṣādiqīna
Say, "Then bring a scripture from Allāh which is more guiding than either of them that I may follow it, if you should be truthful."
فَإِن But if fa-in not lam they respond yastajībū to you laka then know fa-iʿ'lam that only annamā they follow yattabiʿūna their desires ahwāahum And who waman (is) more astray aḍallu than (one) who mimmani follows ittabaʿa his own desire hawāhu without bighayri guidance hudan from mina Allah l-lahi Indeed inna Allah l-laha (does) not lā guide yahdī the people l-qawma the wrongdoers l-ẓālimīna
But if they do not respond to you - then know that they only follow their [own] desires. And who is more astray than one who follows his desire without guidance from Allāh? Indeed, Allāh does not guide the wrongdoing people.
۞ وَلَقَدْ And indeed walaqad We have conveyed waṣṣalnā to them lahumu the Word l-qawla so that they may laʿallahum remember yatadhakkarūna
And We have [repeatedly] conveyed to them the word [i.e., the Qur’ān] that they might be reminded.
ٱلَّذِينَ Those who alladhīna We gave them ātaynāhumu the Scripture l-kitāba before it min before it qablihi they hum in it bihi believe yu'minūna
Those to whom We gave the Scripture before it - they1 are believers in it.
وَإِذَا And when wa-idhā it is recited yut'lā to them ʿalayhim they say qālū We believe āmannā in it bihi Indeed, it innahu (is) the truth l-ḥaqu from min our Lord rabbinā Indeed, we innā [we] were kunnā before it min before it qablihi Muslims mus'limīna
And when it is recited to them, they say, "We have believed in it; indeed, it is the truth from our Lord. Indeed we were, [even] before it, Muslims [i.e., submitting to Allāh]."
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ Those ulāika will be given yu'tawna their reward ajrahum twice marratayni because bimā they are patient ṣabarū and they repel wayadraūna with good bil-ḥasanati the evil l-sayi-ata and from what wamimmā We have provided them razaqnāhum they spend yunfiqūna
Those will be given their reward twice for what they patiently endured and [because] they avert evil through good, and from what We have provided them they spend.
وَإِذَا And when wa-idhā they hear samiʿū vain talk l-laghwa they turn away aʿraḍū from it ʿanhu and say waqālū For us lanā our deeds aʿmālunā and for you walakum your deeds aʿmālukum Peace (be) salāmun on you ʿalaykum not lā we seek nabtaghī the ignorant l-jāhilīna
And when they hear ill speech, they turn away from it and say, "For us are our deeds, and for you are your deeds. Peace will be upon you;1 we seek not the ignorant."
إِنَّكَ Indeed, you innaka (can) not lā guide tahdī whom man you love aḥbabta but walākinna Allah l-laha guides yahdī whom man He wills yashāu And He wahuwa (is) most knowing aʿlamu (of) the guided ones bil-muh'tadīna
Indeed, [O Muḥammad], you do not guide whom you like, but Allāh guides whom He wills. And He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided.
وَقَالُوٓا۟ And they say waqālū If in we follow nattabiʿi the guidance l-hudā with you maʿaka we would be swept nutakhaṭṭaf from min our land arḍinā Have not awalam We established numakkin for them lahum a sanctuary ḥaraman secure āminan are brought yuj'bā to it ilayhi fruits thamarātu (of) all kulli things shayin a provision riz'qan from min Us ladunnā But walākinna most of them aktharahum (do) not lā know yaʿlamūna
And they [i.e., the Quraysh] say, "If we were to follow the guidance with you, we would be swept1 from our land." Have We not established for them a safe sanctuary to which are brought the fruits of all things as provision from Us? But most of them do not know.
وَكَمْ And how many wakam We have destroyed ahlaknā of min a town qaryatin which exulted baṭirat (in) its means of livelihood maʿīshatahā And these fatil'ka (are) their dwellings masākinuhum not lam have been inhabited tus'kan after them min after them baʿdihim except illā a little qalīlan And indeed, [We] wakunnā We naḥnu (are) the inheritors l-wārithīna
And how many a city have We destroyed that was insolent in its [way of] living, and those are their dwellings which have not been inhabited after them except briefly.1 And it is We who were the inheritors.
وَمَا And not wamā was kāna your Lord rabbuka (the) one to destroy muh'lika the towns l-qurā until ḥattā He (had) sent yabʿatha in fī their mother (town) ummihā a Messenger rasūlan reciting yatlū to them ʿalayhim Our Verses āyātinā And not wamā We would be kunnā (the) one to destroy muh'likī the towns l-qurā except illā while their people wa-ahluhā (were) wrongdoers ẓālimūna
And never would your Lord have destroyed the cities until He had sent to their mother [i.e., principal city] a messenger reciting to them Our verses. And We would not destroy the cities except while their people were wrongdoers.
وَمَآ And whatever wamā you have been given ūtītum from min things shayin (is) an enjoyment famatāʿu (of the) life l-ḥayati (of) the world l-dun'yā and its adornment wazīnatuhā And what wamā (is) with ʿinda Allah l-lahi (is) better khayrun and more lasting wa-abqā So (will) not afalā you use intellect taʿqilūna
And whatever thing you [people] have been given - it is [only for] the enjoyment of worldly life and its adornment. And what is with Allāh is better and more lasting; so will you not use reason?
أَفَمَن Then is (he) whom afaman We have promised him waʿadnāhu a promise waʿdan good ḥasanan and he fahuwa (will) meet it lāqīhi like (the one) whom kaman We provided him mattaʿnāhu enjoyment matāʿa (of the) life l-ḥayati (of) the world l-dun'yā then thumma he huwa (on the) Day yawma (of) the Resurrection l-qiyāmati (will be) among mina those presented l-muḥ'ḍarīna
Then is he whom We have promised a good promise which he will meet [i.e., obtain] like he for whom We provided enjoyment of worldly life [but] then he is, on the Day of Resurrection, among those presented [for punishment in Hell]?
وَيَوْمَ And (the) Day wayawma He will call them yunādīhim and say fayaqūlu Where ayna (are) My partners shurakāiya whom alladhīna you used (to) kuntum claim tazʿumūna
And [warn of] the Day He will call them and say, "Where are My 'partners' which you used to claim?"
قَالَ (Will) say qāla those alladhīna (has) come true ḥaqqa against whom ʿalayhimu the Word l-qawlu Our Lord rabbanā These hāulāi (are) those whom alladhīna we led astray aghwaynā We led them astray aghwaynāhum as kamā we were astray ghawaynā We declare our innocence tabarranā before You ilayka Not mā they used (to) kānū worship us iyyānā worship us yaʿbudūna
Those upon whom the word1 will have come into effect will say, "Our Lord, these are the ones we led to error. We led them to error just as we were in error. We declare our disassociation [from them] to You. They did not used to worship [i.e., obey] us."2
وَقِيلَ And it will be said waqīla Call id'ʿū your partners shurakāakum And they will call them fadaʿawhum but not falam they will respond yastajībū to them lahum and they will see wara-awū the punishment l-ʿadhāba If only law [that] they annahum had been kānū guided yahtadūna
And it will be said, "Invoke your 'partners,'" and they will invoke them; but they will not respond to them, and they will see the punishment. If only they had followed guidance!
وَيَوْمَ And (the) Day wayawma He will call them yunādīhim and say fayaqūlu What mādhā did you answer ajabtumu the Messengers l-mur'salīna
And [mention] the Day He will call them and say, "What did you answer the messengers?"
فَعَمِيَتْ But (will) be obscure faʿamiyat to them ʿalayhimu the information l-anbāu that day yawma-idhin so they fahum will not ask one another lā will not ask one another yatasāalūna
But the information1 will be unapparent to them that Day, so they will not [be able to] ask one another.
فَأَمَّا But as for fa-ammā (him) who man repented tāba and believed waāmana and did waʿamila righteousness ṣāliḥan then perhaps faʿasā [that] an he will be yakūna of mina the successful ones l-muf'liḥīna
But as for one who had repented, believed, and done righteousness, it is expected [i.e., promised by Allāh] that he will be among the successful.
وَرَبُّكَ And your Lord warabbuka creates yakhluqu what mā He wills yashāu and chooses wayakhtāru Not mā they have kāna for them lahumu the choice l-khiyaratu Glory be sub'ḥāna (to) Allah l-lahi and High is He wataʿālā above what ʿammā they associate (with Him) yush'rikūna
And your Lord creates what He wills and chooses; not for them was the choice. Exalted is Allāh and high above what they associate with Him.
وَرَبُّكَ And your Lord warabbuka knows yaʿlamu what mā conceals tukinnu their breasts ṣudūruhum and what wamā they declare yuʿ'linūna
And your Lord knows what their breasts conceal and what they declare.
وَهُوَ And He wahuwa (is) Allah l-lahu (there is) no lā god ilāha but illā He huwa To Him lahu (are due) all praises l-ḥamdu in fī the first l-ūlā and the last wal-ākhirati And for Him walahu (is) the Decision l-ḥuk'mu and to Him wa-ilayhi you will be returned tur'jaʿūna
And He is Allāh; there is no deity except Him. To Him is [due all] praise in the first [life] and the Hereafter. And His is the [final] decision, and to Him you will be returned.
قُلْ Say qul Have you seen ara-aytum if in Allah made jaʿala Allah made l-lahu for you ʿalaykumu the night al-layla continuous sarmadan till ilā (the) Day yawmi (of) the Resurrection l-qiyāmati who man (is the) god ilāhun besides ghayru Allah l-lahi who could bring you yatīkum light biḍiyāin Then will not afalā you hear tasmaʿūna
Say, "Have you considered:1 if Allāh should make for you the night continuous until the Day of Resurrection, what deity other than Allāh could bring you light? Then will you not hear?"
قُلْ Say qul Have you seen ara-aytum if in Allah made jaʿala Allah made l-lahu for you ʿalaykumu the day l-nahāra continuous sarmadan till ilā (the) Day yawmi (of) the Resurrection l-qiyāmati who man (is the) god ilāhun besides ghayru Allah l-lahi who could bring you yatīkum night bilaylin (for) you (to) rest taskunūna in it fīhi Then will not afalā you see tub'ṣirūna
Say, "Have you considered: if Allāh should make for you the day continuous until the Day of Resurrection, what deity other than Allāh could bring you a night in which you may rest? Then will you not see?"
وَمِن And from wamin His Mercy raḥmatihi He made jaʿala for you lakumu the night al-layla and the day wal-nahāra that you may rest litaskunū therein fīhi and that you may seek walitabtaghū from min His Bounty faḍlihi and so that you may walaʿallakum be grateful tashkurūna
And out of His mercy He made for you the night and the day that you may rest therein and [by day] seek from His bounty and [that] perhaps you will be grateful.
وَنَزَعْنَا And We will draw forth wanazaʿnā from min every kulli nation ummatin a witness shahīdan and We will say faqul'nā Bring hātū your proof bur'hānakum Then they will know faʿalimū that anna the truth l-ḥaqa (is) for Allah lillahi and (will be) lost waḍalla from them ʿanhum what mā they used (to) kānū invent yaftarūna
And We will extract from every nation a witness and say, "Produce your proof," and they will know that the truth belongs to Allāh, and lost from them is that which they used to invent.
۞ إِنَّ Indeed inna Qarun qārūna was kāna from min (the) people qawmi (of) Musa mūsā but he oppressed fabaghā [on] them ʿalayhim And We gave him waātaynāhu of mina the treasures l-kunūzi which mā indeed inna (the) keys of it mafātiḥahu would burden latanūu a company (of men) bil-ʿuṣ'bati possessors of great strength ulī possessors of great strength l-quwati When idh said qāla to him lahu his people qawmuhu (Do) not lā exult tafraḥ Indeed inna Allah l-laha (does) not lā love yuḥibbu the exultant l-fariḥīna
Indeed, Qārūn was from the people of Moses, but he tyrannized them. And We gave him of treasures whose keys would burden a band of strong men; thereupon his people said to him, "Do not exult. Indeed, Allāh does not like the exultant.
وَٱبْتَغِ But seek wa-ib'taghi through what fīmā Allah has given you ātāka Allah has given you l-lahu the home l-dāra (of) the Hereafter l-ākhirata and (do) not walā forget tansa your share naṣībaka of mina the world l-dun'yā And do good wa-aḥsin as kamā Allah has been good aḥsana Allah has been good l-lahu to you ilayka And (do) not walā seek tabghi corruption l-fasāda in fī the earth l-arḍi Indeed inna Allah l-laha (does) not lā love yuḥibbu the corrupters l-muf'sidīna
But seek, through that which Allāh has given you, the home of the Hereafter; and [yet], do not forget your share of the world. And do good as Allāh has done good to you. And desire not corruption in the land. Indeed, Allāh does not like corrupters."
قَالَ He said qāla Only innamā I have been given it ūtītuhu on (account) ʿalā (of) knowledge ʿil'min I have ʿindī Did not awalam he know yaʿlam that anna Allah l-laha indeed qad destroyed ahlaka before him min before him qablihi of mina the generations l-qurūni who man [they] huwa (were) stronger ashaddu than him min'hu (in) strength quwwatan and greater wa-aktharu (in) accumulation jamʿan And not walā will be questioned yus'alu about ʿan their sins dhunūbihimu the criminals l-muj'rimūna
He said, "I was only given it because of knowledge I have." Did he not know that Allāh had destroyed before him of generations those who were greater than him in power and greater in accumulation [of wealth]? But the criminals, about their sins, will not be asked.1
فَخَرَجَ So he went forth fakharaja to ʿalā his people qawmihi in fī his adornment zīnatihi Said qāla those who alladhīna desire yurīdūna the life l-ḥayata (of) the world l-dun'yā O! Would that yālayta for us lanā (the) like mith'la (of) what mā has been given ūtiya (to) Qarun qārūnu Indeed, he innahu (is the) owner ladhū (of) fortune ḥaẓẓin great ʿaẓīmin
So he came out before his people in his adornment. Those who desired the worldly life said, "Oh, would that we had like what was given to Qārūn. Indeed, he is one of great fortune."
وَقَالَ But said waqāla those who alladhīna were given ūtū the knowledge l-ʿil'ma Woe to you waylakum (The) reward thawābu (of) Allah l-lahi (is) better khayrun for (he) who liman believes āmana and does waʿamila righteous (deeds) ṣāliḥan And not walā it is granted yulaqqāhā except illā (to) the patient ones l-ṣābirūna
But those who had been given knowledge said, "Woe to you! The reward of Allāh is better for he who believes and does righteousness. And none are granted it except the patient."
فَخَسَفْنَا Then We caused to swallow up fakhasafnā him bihi and his home wabidārihi the earth l-arḍa Then not famā was kāna for him lahu any min group fi-atin (to) help him yanṣurūnahu besides min besides dūni Allah l-lahi and not wamā was kāna (he) of mina those who (could) defend themselves l-muntaṣirīna
And We caused the earth to swallow him and his home. And there was for him no company to aid him other than Allāh, nor was he of those who [could] defend themselves.
وَأَصْبَحَ And began wa-aṣbaḥa those who alladhīna (had) wished tamannaw his position makānahu the day before bil-amsi (to) say yaqūlūna Ah! That wayka-anna Allah l-laha extends yabsuṭu the provision l-riz'qa for whom liman He wills yashāu of min His slaves ʿibādihi and restricts it wayaqdiru If not lawlā that an Allah had favored manna Allah had favored l-lahu [to] us ʿalaynā He would have caused it to swallow us lakhasafa He would have caused it to swallow us binā Ah! That wayka-annahu not lā will succeed yuf'liḥu the disbelievers l-kāfirūna
And those who had wished for his position the previous day began to say, "Oh, how Allāh extends provision to whom He wills of His servants and restricts it! If not that Allāh had conferred favor on us, He would have caused it to swallow us. Oh, how the disbelievers do not succeed!"
تِلْكَ That til'ka the Home l-dāru (of) the Hereafter l-ākhiratu We assign it najʿaluhā to those who lilladhīna (do) not lā desire yurīdūna exaltedness ʿuluwwan in fī the earth l-arḍi and not walā corruption fasādan And the good end wal-ʿāqibatu (is) for the righteous lil'muttaqīna
That home of the Hereafter We assign to those who do not desire exaltedness upon the earth or corruption. And the [best] outcome is for the righteous.
مَن Whoever man comes jāa with a good (deed) bil-ḥasanati then for him falahu (will be) better khayrun than it min'hā and whoever waman comes jāa with an evil (deed) bil-sayi-ati then not falā will be recompensed yuj'zā those who alladhīna do ʿamilū the evil (deeds) l-sayiāti except illā what mā they used (to) kānū do yaʿmalūna
Whoever comes [on the Day of Judgement] with a good deed will have better than it; and whoever comes with an evil deed - then those who did evil deeds will not be recompensed except [as much as] what they used to do.
إِنَّ Indeed inna He Who alladhī ordained faraḍa upon you ʿalayka the Quran l-qur'āna (will) surely take you back larādduka to ilā a place of return maʿādin Say qul My Lord rabbī (is) most knowing aʿlamu (of him) who man comes jāa with the guidance bil-hudā and who waman he huwa (is) in fī an error ḍalālin manifest mubīnin
Indeed, [O Muḥammad], He who imposed upon you the Qur’ān will take you back to a place of return.1 Say, "My Lord is most knowing of who brings guidance and who is in clear error."
وَمَا And not wamā you were kunta expecting tarjū that an would be sent down yul'qā to you ilayka the Book l-kitābu except illā (as) a mercy raḥmatan from min your Lord rabbika So (do) not falā be takūnanna an assistant ẓahīran to the disbelievers lil'kāfirīna
And you were not expecting that the Book would be conveyed to you, but [it is] a mercy from your Lord. So do not be an assistant to the disbelievers.1
وَلَا And (let) not walā avert you yaṣuddunnaka from ʿan (the) Verses āyāti (of) Allah l-lahi after baʿda [when] idh they have been revealed unzilat to you ilayka And invite (people) wa-ud'ʿu to ilā your Lord rabbika And (do) not walā be takūnanna of mina the polytheists l-mush'rikīna
And never let them avert you from the verses of Allāh after they have been revealed to you. And invite [people] to your Lord. And never be of those who associate others with Allāh.
وَلَا And (do) not walā invoke tadʿu with maʿa Allah l-lahi god ilāhan other ākhara (There is) no lā god ilāha except illā Him huwa Every kullu thing shayin (will be) destroyed hālikun except illā His Face wajhahu To Him lahu (is) the Decision l-ḥuk'mu and to Him wa-ilayhi you will be returned tur'jaʿūna
And do not invoke with Allāh another deity. There is no deity except Him. Everything will be destroyed except His Face.1 His is the judgement, and to Him you will be returned.
