Ṭā, Seen, Meem.1

— Saheeh International

تِلْكَ

These

til'ka

ءَايَـٰتُ

(are the) Verses

āyātu

ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ

(of) the Book

l-kitābi

ٱلْمُبِينِ

clear

l-mubīni

٢

These are the verses of the clear Book.

— Saheeh International

لَعَلَّكَ

Perhaps you

laʿallaka

بَـٰخِعٌۭ

(would) kill

bākhiʿun

نَّفْسَكَ

yourself

nafsaka

أَلَّا

that not

allā

يَكُونُوا۟

they become

yakūnū

مُؤْمِنِينَ

believers

mu'minīna

٣

Perhaps, [O Muḥammad], you would kill yourself with grief that they will not be believers.

— Saheeh International

إِن

If

in

نَّشَأْ

We will

nasha

نُنَزِّلْ

We can send down

nunazzil

عَلَيْهِم

to them

ʿalayhim

مِّنَ

from

mina

ٱلسَّمَآءِ

the sky

l-samāi

ءَايَةًۭ

a Sign

āyatan

فَظَلَّتْ

so would bend

faẓallat

أَعْنَـٰقُهُمْ

their necks

aʿnāquhum

لَهَا

to it

lahā

خَـٰضِعِينَ

(in) humility

khāḍiʿīna

٤

If We willed, We could send down to them from the sky a sign for which their necks would remain humbled.1

— Saheeh International

وَمَا

And (does) not

wamā

يَأْتِيهِم

come to them

yatīhim

مِّن

any

min

ذِكْرٍۢ

reminder

dhik'rin

مِّنَ

from

mina

ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ

the Most Gracious

l-raḥmāni

مُحْدَثٍ

new

muḥ'dathin

إِلَّا

but

illā

كَانُوا۟

they

kānū

عَنْهُ

from it

ʿanhu

مُعْرِضِينَ

turn away

muʿ'riḍīna

٥

And no mention [i.e., revelation] comes to them anew from the Most Merciful except that they turn away from it.

— Saheeh International

فَقَدْ

So verily

faqad

كَذَّبُوا۟

they have denied

kadhabū

فَسَيَأْتِيهِمْ

then will come to them

fasayatīhim

أَنۢبَـٰٓؤُا۟

the news

anbāu

مَا

(of) what

كَانُوا۟

they used

kānū

بِهِۦ

at it

bihi

يَسْتَهْزِءُونَ

(to) mock

yastahziūna

٦

For they have already denied, but there will come to them the news of that which they used to ridicule.

— Saheeh International

أَوَلَمْ

Do not

awalam

يَرَوْا۟

they see

yaraw

إِلَى

at

ilā

ٱلْأَرْضِ

the earth

l-arḍi

كَمْ

how many

kam

أَنۢبَتْنَا

We produced

anbatnā

فِيهَا

in it

fīhā

مِن

of

min

كُلِّ

every

kulli

زَوْجٍۢ

kind

zawjin

كَرِيمٍ

noble

karīmin

٧

Did they not look at the earth - how much We have produced therein from every noble kind?

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

فِى

in

ذَٰلِكَ

that

dhālika

لَـَٔايَةًۭ ۖ

surely (is) a sign

laāyatan

وَمَا

but not

wamā

كَانَ

are

kāna

أَكْثَرُهُم

most of them

aktharuhum

مُّؤْمِنِينَ

believers

mu'minīna

٨

Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.

— Saheeh International

وَإِنَّ

And indeed

wa-inna

رَبَّكَ

your Lord

rabbaka

لَهُوَ

surely, He

lahuwa

ٱلْعَزِيزُ

(is) the All-Mighty

l-ʿazīzu

ٱلرَّحِيمُ

the Most Merciful

l-raḥīmu

٩

And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.

— Saheeh International

وَإِذْ

And when

wa-idh

نَادَىٰ

your Lord called

nādā

رَبُّكَ

your Lord called

rabbuka

مُوسَىٰٓ

Musa

mūsā

أَنِ

[that]

ani

ٱئْتِ

Go

i'ti

ٱلْقَوْمَ

(to) the people

l-qawma

ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ

(who are) wrongdoers

l-ẓālimīna

١٠

And [mention] when your Lord called Moses, [saying], "Go to the wrongdoing people -

— Saheeh International

قَوْمَ

(The) people

qawma

فِرْعَوْنَ ۚ

(of) Firaun

fir'ʿawna

أَلَا

Will not

alā

يَتَّقُونَ

they fear

yattaqūna

١١

The people of Pharaoh. Will they not fear Allāh?"

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

رَبِّ

My Lord

rabbi

إِنِّىٓ

Indeed, I

innī

أَخَافُ

[I] fear

akhāfu

أَن

that

an

يُكَذِّبُونِ

they will deny me

yukadhibūni

١٢

He said, "My Lord, indeed I fear that they will deny me

— Saheeh International

وَيَضِيقُ

And straitens

wayaḍīqu

صَدْرِى

my breast

ṣadrī

وَلَا

and not

walā

يَنطَلِقُ

expresses well

yanṭaliqu

لِسَانِى

my tongue

lisānī

فَأَرْسِلْ

so send

fa-arsil

إِلَىٰ

for

ilā

هَـٰرُونَ

Harun

hārūna

١٣

And that my breast will tighten and my tongue will not be fluent, so send for Aaron.

— Saheeh International

وَلَهُمْ

And they have

walahum

عَلَىَّ

against me

ʿalayya

ذَنۢبٌۭ

a crime

dhanbun

فَأَخَافُ

so I fear

fa-akhāfu

أَن

that

an

يَقْتُلُونِ

they will kill me

yaqtulūni

١٤

And they have upon me a [claim due to] sin, so I fear that they will kill me."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

كَلَّا ۖ

Nay

kallā

فَٱذْهَبَا

go both of you

fa-idh'habā

بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَآ ۖ

with Our Signs

biāyātinā

إِنَّا

Indeed, We

innā

مَعَكُم

(are) with you

maʿakum

مُّسْتَمِعُونَ

listening

mus'tamiʿūna

١٥

[Allāh] said, "No. Go both of you with Our signs; indeed, We are with you, listening.

— Saheeh International

فَأْتِيَا

So go both of you

fatiyā

فِرْعَوْنَ

(to) Firaun

fir'ʿawna

فَقُولَآ

and say

faqūlā

إِنَّا

'Indeed, we

innā

رَسُولُ

(are the) Messenger

rasūlu

رَبِّ

(of the) Lord

rabbi

ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

(of) the worlds

l-ʿālamīna

١٦

Go to Pharaoh and say, 'We are the messengers1 of the Lord of the worlds,

— Saheeh International

أَنْ

[That]

an

أَرْسِلْ

send

arsil

مَعَنَا

with us

maʿanā

بَنِىٓ

(the) Children of Israel.'

banī

إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ

(the) Children of Israel.'

is'rāīla

١٧

[Commanded to say], "Send with us the Children of Israel."'"

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

أَلَمْ

Did not

alam

نُرَبِّكَ

we bring you up

nurabbika

فِينَا

among us

fīnā

وَلِيدًۭا

(as) a child

walīdan

وَلَبِثْتَ

and you remained

walabith'ta

فِينَا

among us

fīnā

مِنْ

of

min

عُمُرِكَ

your life

ʿumurika

سِنِينَ

years

sinīna

١٨

[Pharaoh] said, "Did we not raise you among us as a child, and you remained among us for years of your life?

— Saheeh International

وَفَعَلْتَ

And you did

wafaʿalta

فَعْلَتَكَ

your deed

faʿlataka

ٱلَّتِى

which

allatī

فَعَلْتَ

you did

faʿalta

وَأَنتَ

and you

wa-anta

مِنَ

(were) of

mina

ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ

the ungrateful

l-kāfirīna

١٩

And [then] you did your deed which you did,1 and you were of the ungrateful."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

فَعَلْتُهَآ

I did it

faʿaltuhā

إِذًۭا

when

idhan

وَأَنَا۠

I

wa-anā

مِنَ

(was) of

mina

ٱلضَّآلِّينَ

those who are astray

l-ḍālīna

٢٠

[Moses] said, "I did it, then, while I was of those astray [i.e., ignorant].

— Saheeh International

فَفَرَرْتُ

So I fled

fafarartu

مِنكُمْ

from you

minkum

لَمَّا

when

lammā

خِفْتُكُمْ

I feared you

khif'tukum

فَوَهَبَ

But granted

fawahaba

لِى

to me

رَبِّى

my Lord

rabbī

حُكْمًۭا

judgment

ḥuk'man

وَجَعَلَنِى

and made me

wajaʿalanī

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ

the Messengers

l-mur'salīna

٢١

So I fled from you when I feared you. Then my Lord granted me judgement [i.e., wisdom and prophet hood] and appointed me [as one] of the messengers.

— Saheeh International

وَتِلْكَ

And this

watil'ka

نِعْمَةٌۭ

(is the) favor

niʿ'matun

تَمُنُّهَا

with which you reproach

tamunnuhā

عَلَىَّ

[on] me

ʿalayya

أَنْ

that

an

عَبَّدتَّ

you have enslaved

ʿabbadtta

بَنِىٓ

(the) Children of Israel

banī

إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ

(the) Children of Israel

is'rāīla

٢٢

And is this a favor of which you remind me - that you have enslaved the Children of Israel?"

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

Firaun said

qāla

فِرْعَوْنُ

Firaun said

fir'ʿawnu

وَمَا

And what

wamā

رَبُّ

(is the) Lord

rabbu

ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

(of) the worlds

l-ʿālamīna

٢٣

Said Pharaoh, "And what is the Lord of the worlds?"

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

رَبُّ

Lord

rabbu

ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ

(of) the heavens

l-samāwāti

وَٱلْأَرْضِ

and the earth

wal-arḍi

وَمَا

and whatever

wamā

بَيْنَهُمَآ ۖ

(is) between them

baynahumā

إِن

if

in

كُنتُم

you (should) be

kuntum

مُّوقِنِينَ

convinced

mūqinīna

٢٤

[Moses] said, "The Lord of the heavens and earth and that between them, if you should be convinced."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

لِمَنْ

to those

liman

حَوْلَهُۥٓ

around him

ḥawlahu

أَلَا

Do not

alā

تَسْتَمِعُونَ

you hear

tastamiʿūna

٢٥

[Pharaoh] said to those around him, "Do you not hear?"

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

رَبُّكُمْ

Your Lord

rabbukum

وَرَبُّ

and (the) Lord

warabbu

ءَابَآئِكُمُ

(of) your forefathers

ābāikumu

ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ

(of) your forefathers

l-awalīna

٢٦

[Moses] said, "Your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

رَسُولَكُمُ

your Messenger

rasūlakumu

ٱلَّذِىٓ

who

alladhī

أُرْسِلَ

has been sent

ur'sila

إِلَيْكُمْ

to you

ilaykum

لَمَجْنُونٌۭ

(is) surely mad

lamajnūnun

٢٧

[Pharaoh] said,1 "Indeed, your 'messenger' who has been sent to you is mad."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

رَبُّ

Lord

rabbu

ٱلْمَشْرِقِ

(of) the east

l-mashriqi

وَٱلْمَغْرِبِ

and the west

wal-maghribi

وَمَا

and whatever

wamā

بَيْنَهُمَآ ۖ

(is) between them

baynahumā

إِن

if

in

كُنتُمْ

you were

kuntum

تَعْقِلُونَ

(to) reason

taʿqilūna

٢٨

[Moses] said, "Lord of the east and the west and that between them, if you were to reason."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

لَئِنِ

If

la-ini

ٱتَّخَذْتَ

you take

ittakhadhta

إِلَـٰهًا

a god

ilāhan

غَيْرِى

other than me

ghayrī

لَأَجْعَلَنَّكَ

I will surely make you

la-ajʿalannaka

مِنَ

among

mina

ٱلْمَسْجُونِينَ

those imprisoned

l-masjūnīna

٢٩

[Pharaoh] said, "If you take a god other than me, I will surely place you among those imprisoned."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

أَوَلَوْ

Even if

awalaw

جِئْتُكَ

I bring you

ji'tuka

بِشَىْءٍۢ

something

bishayin

مُّبِينٍۢ

manifest

mubīnin

٣٠

[Moses] said, "Even if I brought you something [i.e., proof] manifest?"

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

فَأْتِ

Then bring

fati

بِهِۦٓ

it

bihi

إِن

if

in

كُنتَ

you are

kunta

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ

the truthful

l-ṣādiqīna

٣١

[Pharaoh] said, "Then bring it, if you should be of the truthful."

— Saheeh International

فَأَلْقَىٰ

So he threw

fa-alqā

عَصَاهُ

his staff

ʿaṣāhu

فَإِذَا

and behold

fa-idhā

هِىَ

It

hiya

ثُعْبَانٌۭ

(was) a serpent

thuʿ'bānun

مُّبِينٌۭ

manifest

mubīnun

٣٢

So [Moses] threw his staff, and suddenly it was a serpent manifest.1

— Saheeh International

وَنَزَعَ

And he drew out

wanazaʿa

يَدَهُۥ

his hand

yadahu

فَإِذَا

and behold

fa-idhā

هِىَ

It

hiya

بَيْضَآءُ

(was) white

bayḍāu

لِلنَّـٰظِرِينَ

for the observers

lilnnāẓirīna

٣٣

And he drew out his hand; thereupon it was white for the observers.

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

لِلْمَلَإِ

to the chiefs

lil'mala-i

حَوْلَهُۥٓ

around him

ḥawlahu

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

هَـٰذَا

this

hādhā

لَسَـٰحِرٌ

(is) surely a magician

lasāḥirun

عَلِيمٌۭ

learned

ʿalīmun

٣٤

[Pharaoh] said to the eminent ones around him, "Indeed, this is a learned magician.

— Saheeh International

يُرِيدُ

He wants

yurīdu

أَن

to

an

يُخْرِجَكُم

drive you out

yukh'rijakum

مِّنْ

from

min

أَرْضِكُم

your land

arḍikum

بِسِحْرِهِۦ

by his magic

bisiḥ'rihi

فَمَاذَا

so what

famādhā

تَأْمُرُونَ

(do) you advise

tamurūna

٣٥

He wants to drive you out of your land by his magic, so what do you advise?"

— Saheeh International

قَالُوٓا۟

They said

qālū

أَرْجِهْ

Postpone him

arjih

وَأَخَاهُ

and his brother

wa-akhāhu

وَٱبْعَثْ

and send

wa-ib'ʿath

فِى

in

ٱلْمَدَآئِنِ

the cities

l-madāini

حَـٰشِرِينَ

gatherers

ḥāshirīna

٣٦

They said, "Postpone [the matter of] him and his brother and send among the cities gatherers

— Saheeh International

يَأْتُوكَ

They (will) bring to you

yatūka

بِكُلِّ

every

bikulli

سَحَّارٍ

magician

saḥḥārin

عَلِيمٍۢ

learned

ʿalīmin

٣٧

Who will bring you every learned, skilled magician."

— Saheeh International

فَجُمِعَ

So were assembled

fajumiʿa

ٱلسَّحَرَةُ

the magicians

l-saḥaratu

لِمِيقَـٰتِ

for (the) appointment

limīqāti

يَوْمٍۢ

(on) a day

yawmin

مَّعْلُومٍۢ

well-known

maʿlūmin

٣٨

So the magicians were assembled for the appointment of a well-known day.1

— Saheeh International

وَقِيلَ

And it was said

waqīla

لِلنَّاسِ

to the people

lilnnāsi

هَلْ

Will

hal

أَنتُم

you

antum

مُّجْتَمِعُونَ

assemble

muj'tamiʿūna

٣٩

And it was said to the people, "Will you congregate.

— Saheeh International

لَعَلَّنَا

That we may

laʿallanā

نَتَّبِعُ

follow

nattabiʿu

ٱلسَّحَرَةَ

the magicians

l-saḥarata

إِن

if

in

كَانُوا۟

they are

kānū

هُمُ

they are

humu

ٱلْغَـٰلِبِينَ

the victorious

l-ghālibīna

٤٠

That we might follow the magicians if they are the predominant?"

— Saheeh International

فَلَمَّا

So when

falammā

جَآءَ

came

jāa

ٱلسَّحَرَةُ

the magicians

l-saḥaratu

قَالُوا۟

they said

qālū

لِفِرْعَوْنَ

to Firaun

lifir'ʿawna

أَئِنَّ

Is there

a-inna

لَنَا

for us

lanā

لَأَجْرًا

a reward

la-ajran

إِن

if

in

كُنَّا

we are

kunnā

نَحْنُ

we are

naḥnu

ٱلْغَـٰلِبِينَ

the victorious

l-ghālibīna

٤١

And when the magicians arrived, they said to Pharaoh, "Is there indeed for us a reward if we are the predominant?"

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

نَعَمْ

Yes

naʿam

وَإِنَّكُمْ

and indeed you

wa-innakum

إِذًۭا

then

idhan

لَّمِنَ

surely (will be) of

lamina

ٱلْمُقَرَّبِينَ

the ones who are brought near

l-muqarabīna

٤٢

He said, "Yes, and indeed, you will then be of those near [to me]."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

Said

qāla

لَهُم

to them

lahum

مُّوسَىٰٓ

Musa

mūsā

أَلْقُوا۟

Throw

alqū

مَآ

what

أَنتُم

you

antum

مُّلْقُونَ

(are) going to throw

mul'qūna

٤٣

Moses said to them, "Throw whatever you will throw."

— Saheeh International

فَأَلْقَوْا۟

So they threw

fa-alqaw

حِبَالَهُمْ

their ropes

ḥibālahum

وَعِصِيَّهُمْ

and their staffs

waʿiṣiyyahum

وَقَالُوا۟

and said

waqālū

بِعِزَّةِ

By the might

biʿizzati

فِرْعَوْنَ

(of) Firaun

fir'ʿawna

إِنَّا

indeed, we

innā

لَنَحْنُ

surely, we

lanaḥnu

ٱلْغَـٰلِبُونَ

(are) the victorious

l-ghālibūna

٤٤

So they threw their ropes and their staffs and said, "By the might of Pharaoh, indeed it is we who are predominant."

— Saheeh International

فَأَلْقَىٰ

Then threw

fa-alqā

مُوسَىٰ

Musa

mūsā

عَصَاهُ

his staff

ʿaṣāhu

فَإِذَا

and behold

fa-idhā

هِىَ

It

hiya

تَلْقَفُ

swallowed

talqafu

مَا

what

يَأْفِكُونَ

they falsified

yafikūna

٤٥

Then Moses threw his staff, and at once it devoured what they falsified.

— Saheeh International

فَأُلْقِىَ

Then fell down

fa-ul'qiya

ٱلسَّحَرَةُ

the magicians

l-saḥaratu

سَـٰجِدِينَ

prostrate

sājidīna

٤٦

So the magicians fell down in prostration [to Allāh].

— Saheeh International

قَالُوٓا۟

They said

qālū

ءَامَنَّا

We believe

āmannā

بِرَبِّ

in (the) Lord

birabbi

ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

(of) the worlds

l-ʿālamīna

٤٧

They said, "We have believed in the Lord of the worlds,

— Saheeh International

رَبِّ

Lord

rabbi

مُوسَىٰ

(of) Musa

mūsā

وَهَـٰرُونَ

and Harun

wahārūna

٤٨

The Lord of Moses and Aaron."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

ءَامَنتُمْ

You believed

āmantum

لَهُۥ

in him

lahu

قَبْلَ

before

qabla

أَنْ

[that]

an

ءَاذَنَ

I gave permission

ādhana

لَكُمْ ۖ

to you

lakum

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed, he

innahu

لَكَبِيرُكُمُ

(is) surely your chief

lakabīrukumu

ٱلَّذِى

who

alladhī

عَلَّمَكُمُ

has taught you

ʿallamakumu

ٱلسِّحْرَ

the magic

l-siḥ'ra

فَلَسَوْفَ

so surely soon

falasawfa

تَعْلَمُونَ ۚ

you will know

taʿlamūna

لَأُقَطِّعَنَّ

I will surely cut off

la-uqaṭṭiʿanna

أَيْدِيَكُمْ

your hands

aydiyakum

وَأَرْجُلَكُم

and your feet

wa-arjulakum

مِّنْ

of

min

خِلَـٰفٍۢ

opposite sides

khilāfin

وَلَأُصَلِّبَنَّكُمْ

and I will surely crucify you

wala-uṣallibannakum

أَجْمَعِينَ

all

ajmaʿīna

٤٩

[Pharaoh] said, "You believed him [i.e., Moses] before I gave you permission. Indeed, he is your leader who has taught you magic, but you are going to know. I will surely cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, and I will surely crucify you all."

— Saheeh International

قَالُوا۟

They said

qālū

لَا

No

ضَيْرَ ۖ

harm

ḍayra

إِنَّآ

Indeed, we

innā

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

رَبِّنَا

our Lord

rabbinā

مُنقَلِبُونَ

(will) return

munqalibūna

٥٠

They said, "No harm. Indeed, to our Lord we will return.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّا

Indeed, we

innā

نَطْمَعُ

hope

naṭmaʿu

أَن

that

an

يَغْفِرَ

will forgive

yaghfira

لَنَا

us

lanā

رَبُّنَا

our Lord

rabbunā

خَطَـٰيَـٰنَآ

our sins

khaṭāyānā

أَن

because

an

كُنَّآ

we are

kunnā

أَوَّلَ

(the) first

awwala

ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

(of) the believers

l-mu'minīna

٥١

Indeed, we aspire that our Lord will forgive us our sins because we were the first of the believers."

— Saheeh International

۞ وَأَوْحَيْنَآ

And We inspired

wa-awḥaynā

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

مُوسَىٰٓ

Musa

mūsā

أَنْ

[that]

an

أَسْرِ

Travel by night

asri

بِعِبَادِىٓ

with My slaves

biʿibādī

إِنَّكُم

indeed, you

innakum

مُّتَّبَعُونَ

(will be) followed

muttabaʿūna

٥٢

And We inspired to Moses, "Travel by night with My servants; indeed, you will be pursued."

— Saheeh International

فَأَرْسَلَ

Then sent

fa-arsala

فِرْعَوْنُ

Firaun

fir'ʿawnu

فِى

in

ٱلْمَدَآئِنِ

the cities

l-madāini

حَـٰشِرِينَ

gatherers

ḥāshirīna

٥٣

Then Pharaoh sent among the cities gatherers1

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ

these

hāulāi

لَشِرْذِمَةٌۭ

(are) certainly a band

lashir'dhimatun

قَلِيلُونَ

small

qalīlūna

٥٤

[And said], "Indeed, those are but a small band,

— Saheeh International

وَإِنَّهُمْ

And indeed, they

wa-innahum

لَنَا

[to] us

lanā

لَغَآئِظُونَ

(are) surely enraging

laghāiẓūna

٥٥

And indeed, they are enraging us,

— Saheeh International

وَإِنَّا

And indeed, we

wa-innā

لَجَمِيعٌ

(are) surely a multitude

lajamīʿun

حَـٰذِرُونَ

forewarned

ḥādhirūna

٥٦

And indeed, we are a cautious society..."

— Saheeh International

فَأَخْرَجْنَـٰهُم

So We expelled them

fa-akhrajnāhum

مِّن

from

min

جَنَّـٰتٍۢ

gardens

jannātin

وَعُيُونٍۢ

and springs

waʿuyūnin

٥٧

So We removed them from gardens and springs

— Saheeh International

وَكُنُوزٍۢ

And treasures

wakunūzin

وَمَقَامٍۢ

and a place

wamaqāmin

كَرِيمٍۢ

honorable

karīmin

٥٨

And treasures and honorable station1 -

— Saheeh International

كَذَٰلِكَ

Thus

kadhālika

وَأَوْرَثْنَـٰهَا

And We caused to inherit them

wa-awrathnāhā

بَنِىٓ

(the) Children of Israel

banī

إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ

(the) Children of Israel

is'rāīla

٥٩

Thus. And We caused to inherit it the Children of Israel.

— Saheeh International

فَأَتْبَعُوهُم

So they followed them

fa-atbaʿūhum

مُّشْرِقِينَ

(at) sunrise

mush'riqīna

٦٠

So they pursued them at sunrise.

— Saheeh International

فَلَمَّا

Then when

falammā

تَرَٰٓءَا

saw each other

tarāā

ٱلْجَمْعَانِ

the two hosts

l-jamʿāni

قَالَ

said

qāla

أَصْحَـٰبُ

(the) companions

aṣḥābu

مُوسَىٰٓ

(of) Musa

mūsā

إِنَّا

Indeed, we

innā

لَمُدْرَكُونَ

(are) surely to be overtaken

lamud'rakūna

٦١

And when the two companies saw one another, the companions of Moses said, "Indeed, we are to be overtaken!"

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

كَلَّآ ۖ

Nay

kallā

إِنَّ

indeed

inna

مَعِىَ

with me

maʿiya

رَبِّى

(is) my Lord

rabbī

سَيَهْدِينِ

He will guide me

sayahdīni

٦٢

[Moses] said, "No! Indeed, with me is my Lord; He will guide me."

— Saheeh International

فَأَوْحَيْنَآ

Then We inspired

fa-awḥaynā

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

مُوسَىٰٓ

Musa

mūsā

أَنِ

[that]

ani

ٱضْرِب

Strike

iḍ'rib

بِّعَصَاكَ

with your staff

biʿaṣāka

ٱلْبَحْرَ ۖ

the sea

l-baḥra

فَٱنفَلَقَ

So it parted

fa-infalaqa

فَكَانَ

and became

fakāna

كُلُّ

each

kullu

فِرْقٍۢ

part

fir'qin

كَٱلطَّوْدِ

like the mountain

kal-ṭawdi

ٱلْعَظِيمِ

[the] great

l-ʿaẓīmi

٦٣

Then We inspired to Moses, "Strike with your staff the sea," and it parted, and each portion was like a great towering mountain.

— Saheeh International

وَأَزْلَفْنَا

And We brought near

wa-azlafnā

ثَمَّ

there

thamma

ٱلْـَٔاخَرِينَ

the others

l-ākharīna

٦٤

And We advanced thereto the others [i.e., the pursuers].

— Saheeh International

وَأَنجَيْنَا

And We saved

wa-anjaynā

مُوسَىٰ

Musa

mūsā

وَمَن

and who

waman

مَّعَهُۥٓ

(were) with him

maʿahu

أَجْمَعِينَ

all

ajmaʿīna

٦٥

And We saved Moses and those with him, all together.

— Saheeh International

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

أَغْرَقْنَا

We drowned

aghraqnā

ٱلْـَٔاخَرِينَ

the others

l-ākharīna

٦٦

Then We drowned the others.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

فِى

in

ذَٰلِكَ

that

dhālika

لَـَٔايَةًۭ ۖ

surely (is) a Sign

laāyatan

وَمَا

but not

wamā

كَانَ

are

kāna

أَكْثَرُهُم

most of them

aktharuhum

مُّؤْمِنِينَ

believers

mu'minīna

٦٧

Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.

— Saheeh International

وَإِنَّ

And indeed

wa-inna

رَبَّكَ

your Lord

rabbaka

لَهُوَ

surely He

lahuwa

ٱلْعَزِيزُ

(is) the All-Mighty

l-ʿazīzu

ٱلرَّحِيمُ

the Most Merciful

l-raḥīmu

٦٨

And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.

— Saheeh International

وَٱتْلُ

And recite

wa-ut'lu

عَلَيْهِمْ

to them

ʿalayhim

نَبَأَ

(the) news

naba-a

إِبْرَٰهِيمَ

(of) Ibrahim

ib'rāhīma

٦٩

And recite to them the news of Abraham,

— Saheeh International

إِذْ

When

idh

قَالَ

he said

qāla

لِأَبِيهِ

to his father

li-abīhi

وَقَوْمِهِۦ

and his people

waqawmihi

مَا

What

تَعْبُدُونَ

(do) you worship

taʿbudūna

٧٠

When he said to his father and his people, "What do you worship?"

— Saheeh International

قَالُوا۟

They said

qālū

نَعْبُدُ

We worship

naʿbudu

أَصْنَامًۭا

idols

aṣnāman

فَنَظَلُّ

so we will remain

fanaẓallu

لَهَا

to them

lahā

عَـٰكِفِينَ

devoted

ʿākifīna

٧١

They said, "We worship idols and remain to them devoted."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

هَلْ

Do

hal

يَسْمَعُونَكُمْ

they hear you

yasmaʿūnakum

إِذْ

when

idh

تَدْعُونَ

you call

tadʿūna

٧٢

He said, "Do they hear you when you supplicate?

— Saheeh International

أَوْ

Or

aw

يَنفَعُونَكُمْ

(do) they benefit you

yanfaʿūnakum

أَوْ

or

aw

يَضُرُّونَ

they harm (you)

yaḍurrūna

٧٣

Or do they benefit you, or do they harm?"

— Saheeh International

قَالُوا۟

They said

qālū

بَلْ

Nay

bal

وَجَدْنَآ

but we found

wajadnā

ءَابَآءَنَا

our forefathers

ābāanā

كَذَٰلِكَ

like that

kadhālika

يَفْعَلُونَ

doing

yafʿalūna

٧٤

They said, "But we found our fathers doing thus."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

أَفَرَءَيْتُم

Do you see

afara-aytum

مَّا

what

كُنتُمْ

you have been

kuntum

تَعْبُدُونَ

worshipping

taʿbudūna

٧٥

He said, "Then do you see what you have been worshipping,

— Saheeh International

أَنتُمْ

You

antum

وَءَابَآؤُكُمُ

and your forefathers

waābāukumu

ٱلْأَقْدَمُونَ

and your forefathers

l-aqdamūna

٧٦

You and your ancient forefathers?

— Saheeh International

فَإِنَّهُمْ

Indeed, they

fa-innahum

عَدُوٌّۭ

(are) enemies

ʿaduwwun

لِّىٓ

to me

إِلَّا

except

illā

رَبَّ

(the) Lord

rabba

ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

(of) the worlds

l-ʿālamīna

٧٧

Indeed, they are enemies to me, except the Lord of the worlds,1

— Saheeh International

ٱلَّذِى

The One Who

alladhī

خَلَقَنِى

created me

khalaqanī

فَهُوَ

and He

fahuwa

يَهْدِينِ

guides me

yahdīni

٧٨

Who created me, and He [it is who] guides me.

— Saheeh International

وَٱلَّذِى

And the One Who

wa-alladhī

هُوَ

[He]

huwa

يُطْعِمُنِى

gives me food

yuṭ'ʿimunī

وَيَسْقِينِ

and gives me drink

wayasqīni

٧٩

And it is He who feeds me and gives me drink.

— Saheeh International

وَإِذَا

And when

wa-idhā

مَرِضْتُ

I am ill

mariḍ'tu

فَهُوَ

then He

fahuwa

يَشْفِينِ

cures me

yashfīni

٨٠

And when I am ill, it is He who cures me

— Saheeh International

وَٱلَّذِى

And the One Who

wa-alladhī

يُمِيتُنِى

will cause me to die

yumītunī

ثُمَّ

then

thumma

يُحْيِينِ

he will give me life

yuḥ'yīni

٨١

And who will cause me to die and then bring me to life

— Saheeh International

وَٱلَّذِىٓ

And the One Who

wa-alladhī

أَطْمَعُ

I hope

aṭmaʿu

أَن

that

an

يَغْفِرَ

He will forgive

yaghfira

لِى

for me

خَطِيٓـَٔتِى

my faults

khaṭīatī

يَوْمَ

(on the) Day

yawma

ٱلدِّينِ

(of) the Judgment

l-dīni

٨٢

And who I aspire that He will forgive me my sin on the Day of Recompense."

— Saheeh International

رَبِّ

My Lord

rabbi

هَبْ

Grant

hab

لِى

[for] me

حُكْمًۭا

wisdom

ḥuk'man

وَأَلْحِقْنِى

and join me

wa-alḥiq'nī

بِٱلصَّـٰلِحِينَ

with the righteous

bil-ṣāliḥīna

٨٣

[And he said], "My Lord, grant me authority and join me with the righteous.

— Saheeh International

وَٱجْعَل

And grant

wa-ij'ʿal

لِّى

[for] me

لِسَانَ

a mention

lisāna

صِدْقٍۢ

(of) honor

ṣid'qin

فِى

among

ٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ

the later (generations)

l-ākhirīna

٨٤

And grant me a mention [i.e., reputation] of honor among later generations.

— Saheeh International

وَٱجْعَلْنِى

And make me

wa-ij'ʿalnī

مِن

of

min

وَرَثَةِ

(the) inheritors

warathati

جَنَّةِ

(of) Garden(s)

jannati

ٱلنَّعِيمِ

(of) Delight

l-naʿīmi

٨٥

And place me among the inheritors of the Garden of Pleasure.

— Saheeh International

وَٱغْفِرْ

And forgive

wa-igh'fir

لِأَبِىٓ

my father

li-abī

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed, he

innahu

كَانَ

is

kāna

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلضَّآلِّينَ

those astray

l-ḍālīna

٨٦

And forgive my father. Indeed, he has been of those astray.

— Saheeh International

وَلَا

And (do) not

walā

تُخْزِنِى

disgrace me

tukh'zinī

يَوْمَ

(on the) Day

yawma

يُبْعَثُونَ

they are resurrected

yub'ʿathūna

٨٧

And do not disgrace me on the Day they are [all] resurrected -

— Saheeh International

يَوْمَ

(The) Day

yawma

لَا

not

يَنفَعُ

will benefit

yanfaʿu

مَالٌۭ

wealth

mālun

وَلَا

and not

walā

بَنُونَ

sons

banūna

٨٨

The Day when there will not benefit [anyone] wealth or children

— Saheeh International

إِلَّا

Except

illā

مَنْ

(he) who

man

أَتَى

comes

atā

ٱللَّهَ

(to) Allah

l-laha

بِقَلْبٍۢ

with a heart

biqalbin

سَلِيمٍۢ

sound

salīmin

٨٩

But only one who comes to Allāh with a sound heart."

— Saheeh International

وَأُزْلِفَتِ

And (will be) brought near

wa-uz'lifati

ٱلْجَنَّةُ

the Paradise

l-janatu

لِلْمُتَّقِينَ

for the righteous

lil'muttaqīna

٩٠

And Paradise will be brought near [that Day] to the righteous.

— Saheeh International

وَبُرِّزَتِ

And (will be) made manifest

waburrizati

ٱلْجَحِيمُ

the Hellfire

l-jaḥīmu

لِلْغَاوِينَ

to the deviators

lil'ghāwīna

٩١

And Hellfire will be brought forth for the deviators,

— Saheeh International

وَقِيلَ

And it will be said

waqīla

لَهُمْ

to them

lahum

أَيْنَ

Where

ayna

مَا

(is) that

كُنتُمْ

you used

kuntum

تَعْبُدُونَ

(to) worship

taʿbudūna

٩٢

And it will be said to them, "Where are those you used to worship

— Saheeh International

مِن

Besides Allah

min

دُونِ

Besides Allah

dūni

ٱللَّهِ

Besides Allah

l-lahi

هَلْ

Can

hal

يَنصُرُونَكُمْ

they help you

yanṣurūnakum

أَوْ

or

aw

يَنتَصِرُونَ

help themselves

yantaṣirūna

٩٣

Other than Allāh? Can they help you or help themselves?"

— Saheeh International

فَكُبْكِبُوا۟

Then they will be overturned

fakub'kibū

فِيهَا

into it

fīhā

هُمْ

they

hum

وَٱلْغَاوُۥنَ

and the deviators

wal-ghāwūna

٩٤

So they will be overturned into it [i.e., Hellfire], they and the deviators

— Saheeh International

وَجُنُودُ

And (the) hosts

wajunūdu

إِبْلِيسَ

(of) Iblis

ib'līsa

أَجْمَعُونَ

all together

ajmaʿūna

٩٥

And the soldiers of Iblees, all together.

— Saheeh International

قَالُوا۟

They (will) say

qālū

وَهُمْ

while they

wahum

فِيهَا

in it

fīhā

يَخْتَصِمُونَ

(are) disputing

yakhtaṣimūna

٩٦

They will say while they dispute therein,

— Saheeh International

تَٱللَّهِ

By Allah

tal-lahi

إِن

indeed

in

كُنَّا

we were

kunnā

لَفِى

surely in

lafī

ضَلَـٰلٍۢ

error

ḍalālin

مُّبِينٍ

clear

mubīnin

٩٧

"By Allāh, we were indeed in manifest error

— Saheeh International

إِذْ

When

idh

نُسَوِّيكُم

we equated you

nusawwīkum

بِرَبِّ

with (the) Lord

birabbi

ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

(of) the worlds

l-ʿālamīna

٩٨

When we equated you with the Lord of the worlds.

— Saheeh International

وَمَآ

And not

wamā

أَضَلَّنَآ

misguided us

aḍallanā

إِلَّا

except

illā

ٱلْمُجْرِمُونَ

the criminals

l-muj'rimūna

٩٩

And no one misguided us except the criminals.

— Saheeh International

فَمَا

So (now) not

famā

لَنَا

we have

lanā

مِن

any

min

شَـٰفِعِينَ

intercessors

shāfiʿīna

١٠٠

So now we have no intercessors

— Saheeh International

وَلَا

And not

walā

صَدِيقٍ

a friend

ṣadīqin

حَمِيمٍۢ

close

ḥamīmin

١٠١

And not a devoted friend.

— Saheeh International

فَلَوْ

Then if

falaw

أَنَّ

that

anna

لَنَا

we had

lanā

كَرَّةًۭ

a return

karratan

فَنَكُونَ

then we could be

fanakūna

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

the believers

l-mu'minīna

١٠٢

Then if we only had a return [to the world] and could be of the believers..."1

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

فِى

in

ذَٰلِكَ

that

dhālika

لَـَٔايَةًۭ ۖ

surely is a Sign

laāyatan

وَمَا

but not

wamā

كَانَ

are

kāna

أَكْثَرُهُم

most of them

aktharuhum

مُّؤْمِنِينَ

believers

mu'minīna

١٠٣

Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.

— Saheeh International

وَإِنَّ

And indeed

wa-inna

رَبَّكَ

your Lord

rabbaka

لَهُوَ

surely He

lahuwa

ٱلْعَزِيزُ

(is) the All-Mighty

l-ʿazīzu

ٱلرَّحِيمُ

the Most Merciful

l-raḥīmu

١٠٤

And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.

— Saheeh International

كَذَّبَتْ

Denied

kadhabat

قَوْمُ

(the) people

qawmu

نُوحٍ

(of) Nuh

nūḥin

ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ

the Messengers

l-mur'salīna

١٠٥

The people of Noah denied the messengers1

— Saheeh International

إِذْ

When

idh

قَالَ

said

qāla

لَهُمْ

to them

lahum

أَخُوهُمْ

their brother

akhūhum

نُوحٌ

Nuh

nūḥun

أَلَا

Will not

alā

تَتَّقُونَ

you fear (Allah)

tattaqūna

١٠٦

When their brother Noah said to them, "Will you not fear Allāh?

— Saheeh International

إِنِّى

Indeed, I am

innī

لَكُمْ

to you

lakum

رَسُولٌ

a Messenger

rasūlun

أَمِينٌۭ

trustworthy

amīnun

١٠٧

Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger.

— Saheeh International

فَٱتَّقُوا۟

So fear

fa-ittaqū

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

وَأَطِيعُونِ

and obey me

wa-aṭīʿūni

١٠٨

So fear Allāh and obey me.

— Saheeh International

وَمَآ

And not

wamā

أَسْـَٔلُكُمْ

I ask (of) you

asalukum

عَلَيْهِ

for it

ʿalayhi

مِنْ

any

min

أَجْرٍ ۖ

payment

ajrin

إِنْ

Not

in

أَجْرِىَ

(is) my payment

ajriya

إِلَّا

but

illā

عَلَىٰ

from

ʿalā

رَبِّ

(the) Lord

rabbi

ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

(of) the worlds

l-ʿālamīna

١٠٩

And I do not ask you for it any payment. My payment is only from the Lord of the worlds.

— Saheeh International

فَٱتَّقُوا۟

So fear

fa-ittaqū

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

وَأَطِيعُونِ

and obey me

wa-aṭīʿūni

١١٠

So fear Allāh and obey me."

— Saheeh International

۞ قَالُوٓا۟

They said

qālū

أَنُؤْمِنُ

Should we believe

anu'minu

لَكَ

in you

laka

وَٱتَّبَعَكَ

while followed you

wa-ittabaʿaka

ٱلْأَرْذَلُونَ

the lowest

l-ardhalūna

١١١

They said, "Should we believe you while you are followed by the lowest [class of people]?"

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

وَمَا

And what

wamā

عِلْمِى

(do) I know

ʿil'mī

بِمَا

of what

bimā

كَانُوا۟

they used

kānū

يَعْمَلُونَ

(to) do

yaʿmalūna

١١٢

He said, "And what is my knowledge of what they used to do?

— Saheeh International

إِنْ

Verily

in

حِسَابُهُمْ

their account

ḥisābuhum

إِلَّا

(is) but

illā

عَلَىٰ

upon

ʿalā

رَبِّى ۖ

my Lord

rabbī

لَوْ

if

law

تَشْعُرُونَ

you perceive

tashʿurūna

١١٣

Their account is only upon my Lord, if you [could] perceive.

— Saheeh International

وَمَآ

And not

wamā

أَنَا۠

I am

anā

بِطَارِدِ

the one to drive away

biṭāridi

ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

the believers

l-mu'minīna

١١٤

And I am not one to drive away the believers.

— Saheeh International

إِنْ

Not

in

أَنَا۠

I am

anā

إِلَّا

but

illā

نَذِيرٌۭ

a warner

nadhīrun

مُّبِينٌۭ

clear

I am only a clear warner."

— Saheeh International

قَالُوا۟

They said

qālū

لَئِن

If

la-in

لَّمْ

not

lam

تَنتَهِ

you desist

tantahi

يَـٰنُوحُ

O Nuh

yānūḥu

لَتَكُونَنَّ

Surely you will be

latakūnanna

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلْمَرْجُومِينَ

those who are stoned

l-marjūmīna

١١٦

They said, "If you do not desist, O Noah, you will surely be of those who are stoned."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

رَبِّ

My Lord

rabbi

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

قَوْمِى

my people

qawmī

كَذَّبُونِ

have denied me

kadhabūni

١١٧

He said, "My Lord, indeed my people have denied me.

— Saheeh International

فَٱفْتَحْ

So judge

fa-if'taḥ

بَيْنِى

between me

baynī

وَبَيْنَهُمْ

and between them

wabaynahum

فَتْحًۭا

(with decisive) judgment

fatḥan

وَنَجِّنِى

and save me

wanajjinī

وَمَن

and who

waman

مَّعِىَ

(are) with me

maʿiya

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

the believers

l-mu'minīna

١١٨

Then judge between me and them with decisive judgement and save me and those with me of the believers."

— Saheeh International

فَأَنجَيْنَـٰهُ

So We saved him

fa-anjaynāhu

وَمَن

and who

waman

مَّعَهُۥ

(were) with him

maʿahu

فِى

in

ٱلْفُلْكِ

the ship

l-ful'ki

ٱلْمَشْحُونِ

laden

l-mashḥūni

١١٩

So We saved him and those with him in the laden ship.

— Saheeh International

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

أَغْرَقْنَا

We drowned

aghraqnā

بَعْدُ

thereafter

baʿdu

ٱلْبَاقِينَ

the remaining ones

l-bāqīna

١٢٠

Then We drowned thereafter the remaining ones.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

فِى

in

ذَٰلِكَ

that

dhālika

لَـَٔايَةًۭ ۖ

surely, (is) a sign

laāyatan

وَمَا

but not

wamā

كَانَ

are

kāna

أَكْثَرُهُم

most of them

aktharuhum

مُّؤْمِنِينَ

believers

mu'minīna

١٢١

Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.

— Saheeh International

وَإِنَّ

And indeed

wa-inna

رَبَّكَ

your Lord

rabbaka

لَهُوَ

surely, He

lahuwa

ٱلْعَزِيزُ

(is) the All-Mighty

l-ʿazīzu

ٱلرَّحِيمُ

the Most Merciful

l-raḥīmu

١٢٢

And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.

— Saheeh International

كَذَّبَتْ

Denied

kadhabat

عَادٌ

(the people) of Aad

ʿādun

ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ

the Messengers

l-mur'salīna

١٢٣

ʿAad denied the messengers

— Saheeh International

إِذْ

When

idh

قَالَ

said

qāla

لَهُمْ

to them

lahum

أَخُوهُمْ

their brother

akhūhum

هُودٌ

Hud

hūdun

أَلَا

Will not

alā

تَتَّقُونَ

you fear (Allah)

tattaqūna

١٢٤

When their brother Hūd said to them, "Will you not fear Allāh?

— Saheeh International

إِنِّى

Indeed, I am

innī

لَكُمْ

to you

lakum

رَسُولٌ

a Messenger

rasūlun

أَمِينٌۭ

trustworthy

amīnun

١٢٥

Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger.

— Saheeh International

فَٱتَّقُوا۟

So fear

fa-ittaqū

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

وَأَطِيعُونِ

and obey me

wa-aṭīʿūni

١٢٦

So fear Allāh and obey me.

— Saheeh International

وَمَآ

And not

wamā

أَسْـَٔلُكُمْ

I ask you

asalukum

عَلَيْهِ

for it

ʿalayhi

مِنْ

any

min

أَجْرٍ ۖ

payment

ajrin

إِنْ

Not

in

أَجْرِىَ

(is) my payment

ajriya

إِلَّا

except

illā

عَلَىٰ

from

ʿalā

رَبِّ

(the) Lord

rabbi

ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

(of) the worlds

l-ʿālamīna

١٢٧

And I do not ask you for it any payment. My payment is only from the Lord of the worlds.

— Saheeh International

أَتَبْنُونَ

Do you construct

atabnūna

بِكُلِّ

on every

bikulli

رِيعٍ

elevation

rīʿin

ءَايَةًۭ

a sign

āyatan

تَعْبَثُونَ

amusing yourselves

taʿbathūna

١٢٨

Do you construct on every elevation a sign,1 amusing yourselves,

— Saheeh International

وَتَتَّخِذُونَ

And take for yourselves

watattakhidhūna

مَصَانِعَ

strongholds

maṣāniʿa

لَعَلَّكُمْ

that you may

laʿallakum

تَخْلُدُونَ

live forever

takhludūna

١٢٩

And take for yourselves constructions [i.e., palaces and fortresses] that you might abide eternally?

— Saheeh International

وَإِذَا

And when

wa-idhā

بَطَشْتُم

you seize

baṭashtum

بَطَشْتُمْ

you seize

baṭashtum

جَبَّارِينَ

(as) tyrants

jabbārīna

١٣٠

And when you strike, you strike as tyrants.

— Saheeh International

فَٱتَّقُوا۟

So fear

fa-ittaqū

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

وَأَطِيعُونِ

and obey me

wa-aṭīʿūni

١٣١

So fear Allāh and obey me.

— Saheeh International

وَٱتَّقُوا۟

And fear

wa-ittaqū

ٱلَّذِىٓ

the One Who

alladhī

أَمَدَّكُم

has aided you

amaddakum

بِمَا

with what

bimā

تَعْلَمُونَ

you know

taʿlamūna

١٣٢

And fear He who provided you with that which you know,

— Saheeh International

أَمَدَّكُم

He has aided you

amaddakum

بِأَنْعَـٰمٍۢ

with cattle

bi-anʿāmin

وَبَنِينَ

and children

wabanīna

١٣٣

Provided you with grazing livestock and children

— Saheeh International

وَجَنَّـٰتٍۢ

And gardens

wajannātin

وَعُيُونٍ

and springs

waʿuyūnin

١٣٤

And gardens and springs.

— Saheeh International

إِنِّىٓ

Indeed, I

innī

أَخَافُ

[I] fear

akhāfu

عَلَيْكُمْ

for you

ʿalaykum

عَذَابَ

(the) punishment

ʿadhāba

يَوْمٍ

(of) a Day

yawmin

عَظِيمٍۢ

Great

ʿaẓīmin

١٣٥

Indeed, I fear for you the punishment of a terrible day."

— Saheeh International

قَالُوا۟

They said

qālū

سَوَآءٌ

(It is) same

sawāon

عَلَيْنَآ

to us

ʿalaynā

أَوَعَظْتَ

whether you advise

awaʿaẓta

أَمْ

or

am

لَمْ

not

lam

تَكُن

you are

takun

مِّنَ

of

mina

ٱلْوَٰعِظِينَ

the advisors

l-wāʿiẓīna

١٣٦

They said, "It is all the same to us whether you advise or are not of the advisors.

— Saheeh International

إِنْ

Not

in

هَـٰذَآ

(is) this

hādhā

إِلَّا

but

illā

خُلُقُ

(the) custom

khuluqu

ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ

(of) the former (people)

l-awalīna

١٣٧

This is not but the custom of the former peoples,

— Saheeh International

وَمَا

And not

wamā

نَحْنُ

we

naḥnu

بِمُعَذَّبِينَ

(are) the ones to be punished

bimuʿadhabīna

١٣٨

And we are not to be punished."

— Saheeh International

فَكَذَّبُوهُ

So they denied him

fakadhabūhu

فَأَهْلَكْنَـٰهُمْ ۗ

then We destroyed them

fa-ahlaknāhum

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

فِى

in

ذَٰلِكَ

that

dhālika

لَـَٔايَةًۭ ۖ

surely, is a sign

laāyatan

وَمَا

but not

wamā

كَانَ

are

kāna

أَكْثَرُهُم

most of them

aktharuhum

مُّؤْمِنِينَ

believers

mu'minīna

١٣٩

And they denied him, so We destroyed them. Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.

— Saheeh International

وَإِنَّ

And indeed

wa-inna

رَبَّكَ

your Lord

rabbaka

لَهُوَ

surely, He

lahuwa

ٱلْعَزِيزُ

(is) the All-Mighty

l-ʿazīzu

ٱلرَّحِيمُ

the Most Merciful

l-raḥīmu

١٤٠

And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.

— Saheeh International

كَذَّبَتْ

Denied

ثَمُودُ

Thamud

thamūdu

ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ

the Messengers

l-mur'salīna

١٤١

Thamūd denied the messengers

— Saheeh International

إِذْ

When

idh

قَالَ

said

qāla

لَهُمْ

to them

lahum

أَخُوهُمْ

their brother

akhūhum

صَـٰلِحٌ

Salih

ṣāliḥun

أَلَا

Will not

alā

تَتَّقُونَ

you fear (Allah)

tattaqūna

١٤٢

When their brother Ṣāliḥ said to them, "Will you not fear Allāh?

— Saheeh International

إِنِّى

Indeed, I am

innī

لَكُمْ

to you

lakum

رَسُولٌ

a Messenger

rasūlun

أَمِينٌۭ

trustworthy

amīnun

١٤٣

Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger.

— Saheeh International

فَٱتَّقُوا۟

So fear

fa-ittaqū

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

وَأَطِيعُونِ

and obey me

wa-aṭīʿūni

١٤٤

So fear Allāh and obey me.

— Saheeh International

وَمَآ

And not

wamā

أَسْـَٔلُكُمْ

I ask you

asalukum

عَلَيْهِ

for it

ʿalayhi

مِنْ

any

min

أَجْرٍ ۖ

payment

ajrin

إِنْ

Not

in

أَجْرِىَ

(is) my payment

ajriya

إِلَّا

except

illā

عَلَىٰ

from

ʿalā

رَبِّ

(the) Lord

rabbi

ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

(of) the worlds

l-ʿālamīna

١٤٥

And I do not ask you for it any payment. My payment is only from the Lord of the worlds.

— Saheeh International

أَتُتْرَكُونَ

Will you be left

atut'rakūna

فِى

in

مَا

what

هَـٰهُنَآ

(is) here

hāhunā

ءَامِنِينَ

secure

āminīna

١٤٦

Will you be left in what is here, secure [from death],

— Saheeh International

فِى

In

جَنَّـٰتٍۢ

gardens

jannātin

وَعُيُونٍۢ

and springs

waʿuyūnin

١٤٧

Within gardens and springs

— Saheeh International

وَزُرُوعٍۢ

And cornfields

wazurūʿin

وَنَخْلٍۢ

and date-palms

wanakhlin

طَلْعُهَا

its spadix

ṭalʿuhā

هَضِيمٌۭ

soft

haḍīmun

١٤٨

And fields of crops and palm trees with softened fruit?

— Saheeh International

وَتَنْحِتُونَ

And you carve

watanḥitūna

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلْجِبَالِ

the mountains

l-jibāli

بُيُوتًۭا

houses

buyūtan

فَـٰرِهِينَ

skillfully

fārihīna

١٤٩

And you carve out of the mountains, homes, with skill.

— Saheeh International

فَٱتَّقُوا۟

So fear

fa-ittaqū

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

وَأَطِيعُونِ

and obey me

wa-aṭīʿūni

١٥٠

So fear Allāh and obey me.

— Saheeh International

وَلَا

And (do) not

walā

تُطِيعُوٓا۟

obey

tuṭīʿū

أَمْرَ

(the) command

amra

ٱلْمُسْرِفِينَ

(of) the transgressors

l-mus'rifīna

١٥١

And do not obey the order of the transgressors,

— Saheeh International

ٱلَّذِينَ

Those who

alladhīna

يُفْسِدُونَ

spread corruption

yuf'sidūna

فِى

in

ٱلْأَرْضِ

the earth

l-arḍi

وَلَا

and (do) not

walā

يُصْلِحُونَ

reform

yuṣ'liḥūna

١٥٢

Who cause corruption in the land and do not amend."

— Saheeh International

قَالُوٓا۟

They said

qālū

إِنَّمَآ

Only

innamā

أَنتَ

you

anta

مِنَ

(are) of

mina

ٱلْمُسَحَّرِينَ

those bewitched

l-musaḥarīna

١٥٣

They said, "You are only of those affected by magic.

— Saheeh International

مَآ

Not

أَنتَ

you

anta

إِلَّا

(are) except

illā

بَشَرٌۭ

a man

basharun

مِّثْلُنَا

like us

mith'lunā

فَأْتِ

so bring

fati

بِـَٔايَةٍ

a sign

biāyatin

إِن

if

in

كُنتَ

you

kunta

مِنَ

(are) of

mina

ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ

the truthful

l-ṣādiqīna

١٥٤

You are but a man like ourselves, so bring a sign, if you should be of the truthful."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

هَـٰذِهِۦ

This

hādhihi

نَاقَةٌۭ

(is) a she-camel

nāqatun

لَّهَا

For her

lahā

شِرْبٌۭ

(is a share of) drink

shir'bun

وَلَكُمْ

and for you

walakum

شِرْبُ

(is a share of) drink

shir'bu

يَوْمٍۢ

(on) a day

yawmin

مَّعْلُومٍۢ

known

maʿlūmin

١٥٥

He said, "This is a she-camel.1 For her is a [time of] drink, and for you is a [time of] drink, [each] on a known day.

— Saheeh International

وَلَا

And (do) not

walā

تَمَسُّوهَا

touch her

tamassūhā

بِسُوٓءٍۢ

with harm

bisūin

فَيَأْخُذَكُمْ

lest seize you

fayakhudhakum

عَذَابُ

(the) punishment

ʿadhābu

يَوْمٍ

(of) a Day

yawmin

عَظِيمٍۢ

Great

ʿaẓīmin

١٥٦

And do not touch her with harm, lest you be seized by the punishment of a terrible day."

— Saheeh International

فَعَقَرُوهَا

But they hamstrung her

faʿaqarūhā

فَأَصْبَحُوا۟

then they became

fa-aṣbaḥū

نَـٰدِمِينَ

regretful

nādimīna

١٥٧

But they hamstrung her and so became regretful.

— Saheeh International

فَأَخَذَهُمُ

So seized them

fa-akhadhahumu

ٱلْعَذَابُ ۗ

the punishment

l-ʿadhābu

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

فِى

in

ذَٰلِكَ

that

dhālika

لَـَٔايَةًۭ ۖ

surely is a sign

laāyatan

وَمَا

but not

wamā

كَانَ

are

kāna

أَكْثَرُهُم

most of them

aktharuhum

مُّؤْمِنِينَ

believers

mu'minīna

١٥٨

And the punishment seized them. Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.

— Saheeh International

وَإِنَّ

And indeed

wa-inna

رَبَّكَ

your Lord

rabbaka

لَهُوَ

surely He

lahuwa

ٱلْعَزِيزُ

(is) the All-Mighty

l-ʿazīzu

ٱلرَّحِيمُ

the Most Merciful

l-raḥīmu

١٥٩

And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.

— Saheeh International

كَذَّبَتْ

Denied

(the) people

لُوطٍ

(of) Lut

lūṭin

ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ

the Messengers

l-mur'salīna

١٦٠

The people of Lot denied the messengers

— Saheeh International

إِذْ

When

قَالَ

said

qāla

لَهُمْ

to them

lahum

أَخُوهُمْ

their brother

akhūhum

لُوطٌ

Lut

lūṭun

أَلَا

Will not

alā

تَتَّقُونَ

you fear (Allah)

tattaqūna

١٦١

When their brother Lot said to them, "Will you not fear Allāh?

— Saheeh International

إِنِّى

Indeed, I am

innī

لَكُمْ

to you

lakum

رَسُولٌ

a Messenger

rasūlun

أَمِينٌۭ

trustworthy

amīnun

١٦٢

Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger.

— Saheeh International

فَٱتَّقُوا۟

So fear

fa-ittaqū

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

وَأَطِيعُونِ

and obey me

wa-aṭīʿūni

١٦٣

So fear Allāh and obey me.

— Saheeh International

وَمَآ

And not

wamā

أَسْـَٔلُكُمْ

I ask you

asalukum

عَلَيْهِ

for it

ʿalayhi

مِنْ

any

min

أَجْرٍ ۖ

payment

ajrin

إِنْ

Not

in

أَجْرِىَ

(is) my payment

ajriya

إِلَّا

except

illā

عَلَىٰ

from

ʿalā

رَبِّ

(the) Lord

rabbi

ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

(of) the worlds

l-ʿālamīna

١٦٤

And I do not ask you for it any payment. My payment is only from the Lord of the worlds.

— Saheeh International

أَتَأْتُونَ

Do you approach

atatūna

ٱلذُّكْرَانَ

the males

l-dhuk'rāna

مِنَ

among

mina

ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

the worlds

l-ʿālamīna

١٦٥

Do you approach males among the worlds1

— Saheeh International

وَتَذَرُونَ

And you leave

watadharūna

مَا

what

خَلَقَ

created

khalaqa

لَكُمْ

for you

lakum

رَبُّكُم

your Lord

rabbukum

مِّنْ

of

min

أَزْوَٰجِكُم ۚ

your mates

azwājikum

بَلْ

Nay

bal

أَنتُمْ

you

antum

قَوْمٌ

(are) a people

qawmun

عَادُونَ

transgressing

ʿādūna

١٦٦

And leave what your Lord has created for you as mates? But you are a people transgressing."

— Saheeh International

قَالُوا۟

They said

qālū

لَئِن

If

la-in

لَّمْ

not

lam

تَنتَهِ

you desist

tantahi

يَـٰلُوطُ

O Lut

yālūṭu

لَتَكُونَنَّ

Surely, you will be

latakūnanna

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلْمُخْرَجِينَ

the ones driven out

l-mukh'rajīna

١٦٧

They said, "If you do not desist, O Lot, you will surely be of those evicted."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

إِنِّى

Indeed, I am

innī

لِعَمَلِكُم

(of) your deed

liʿamalikum

مِّنَ

of

mina

ٱلْقَالِينَ

those who detest

l-qālīna

١٦٨

He said, "Indeed, I am, toward your deed, of those who detest [it].

— Saheeh International

رَبِّ

My Lord

rabbi

نَجِّنِى

Save me

najjinī

وَأَهْلِى

and my family

wa-ahlī

مِمَّا

from what

mimmā

يَعْمَلُونَ

they do

yaʿmalūna

١٦٩

My Lord, save me and my family from [the consequence of] what they do."

— Saheeh International

فَنَجَّيْنَـٰهُ

So We saved him

fanajjaynāhu

وَأَهْلَهُۥٓ

and his family

wa-ahlahu

أَجْمَعِينَ

all

ajmaʿīna

١٧٠

So We saved him and his family, all,

— Saheeh International

إِلَّا

Except

illā

عَجُوزًۭا

an old woman

ʿajūzan

فِى

(was) among

ٱلْغَـٰبِرِينَ

those who remained behind

l-ghābirīna

١٧١

Except an old woman1 among those who remained behind.

— Saheeh International

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

دَمَّرْنَا

We destroyed

dammarnā

ٱلْـَٔاخَرِينَ

the others

l-ākharīna

١٧٢

Then We destroyed the others.

— Saheeh International

وَأَمْطَرْنَا

And We rained

wa-amṭarnā

عَلَيْهِم

upon them

ʿalayhim

مَّطَرًۭا ۖ

a rain

maṭaran

فَسَآءَ

and evil was

fasāa

مَطَرُ

(was) the rain

maṭaru

ٱلْمُنذَرِينَ

(on) those who were warned

l-mundharīna

١٧٣

And We rained upon them a rain [of stones], and evil was the rain of those who were warned.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

فِى

in

ذَٰلِكَ

that

dhālika

لَـَٔايَةًۭ ۖ

surely is a sign

laāyatan

وَمَا

but not

wamā

كَانَ

are

kāna

أَكْثَرُهُم

most of them

aktharuhum

مُّؤْمِنِينَ

believers

mu'minīna

١٧٤

Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.

— Saheeh International

وَإِنَّ

And indeed

wa-inna

رَبَّكَ

your Lord

rabbaka

لَهُوَ

surely, He

lahuwa

ٱلْعَزِيزُ

(is) the All-Mighty

l-ʿazīzu

ٱلرَّحِيمُ

the Most Merciful

l-raḥīmu

١٧٥

And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.

— Saheeh International

كَذَّبَ

Denied

kadhaba

أَصْحَـٰبُ

(the) companions

aṣḥābu

لْـَٔيْكَةِ

(of the) Wood

al'aykati

ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ

the Messengers

l-mur'salīna

١٧٦

The companions of the thicket [i.e., the people of Madyan] denied the messengers

— Saheeh International

إِذْ

When

idh

قَالَ

said

qāla

لَهُمْ

to them

lahum

شُعَيْبٌ

Shuaib

shuʿaybun

أَلَا

Will not

alā

تَتَّقُونَ

you fear (Allah)

tattaqūna

١٧٧

When Shuʿayb said to them, "Will you not fear Allāh?

— Saheeh International

إِنِّى

Indeed, I am

innī

لَكُمْ

to you

lakum

رَسُولٌ

a Messenger

rasūlun

أَمِينٌۭ

trustworthy

amīnun

١٧٨

Indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger.

— Saheeh International

فَٱتَّقُوا۟

So fear

fa-ittaqū

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

وَأَطِيعُونِ

and obey me

wa-aṭīʿūni

١٧٩

So fear Allāh and obey me.

— Saheeh International

وَمَآ

And not

wamā

أَسْـَٔلُكُمْ

I ask (of) you

asalukum

عَلَيْهِ

for it

ʿalayhi

مِنْ

any

min

أَجْرٍ ۖ

payment

ajrin

إِنْ

Not

in

أَجْرِىَ

(is) my payment

ajriya

إِلَّا

except

illā

عَلَىٰ

from

ʿalā

رَبِّ

(the) Lord

rabbi

ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

(of) the worlds

l-ʿālamīna

١٨٠

And I do not ask you for it any payment. My payment is only from the Lord of the worlds.

— Saheeh International

۞ أَوْفُوا۟

Give full

awfū

ٱلْكَيْلَ

measure

l-kayla

وَلَا

and (do) not

walā

تَكُونُوا۟

be

takūnū

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلْمُخْسِرِينَ

those who cause loss

l-mukh'sirīna

١٨١

Give full measure and do not be of those who cause loss.

— Saheeh International

وَزِنُوا۟

And weigh

wazinū

بِٱلْقِسْطَاسِ

with a balance

bil-qis'ṭāsi

ٱلْمُسْتَقِيمِ

[the] even

l-mus'taqīmi

١٨٢

And weigh with an even [i.e., honest] balance.

— Saheeh International

وَلَا

And (do) not

walā

تَبْخَسُوا۟

deprive

tabkhasū

ٱلنَّاسَ

people

l-nāsa

أَشْيَآءَهُمْ

(of) their things

ashyāahum

وَلَا

and (do) not

walā

تَعْثَوْا۟

taʿthaw

فِى

in

ٱلْأَرْضِ

the earth

l-arḍi

مُفْسِدِينَ

spreading corruption

muf'sidīna

١٨٣

And do not deprive people of their due and do not commit abuse on earth, spreading corruption.

— Saheeh International

وَٱتَّقُوا۟

And fear

wa-ittaqū

ٱلَّذِى

the One Who

alladhī

خَلَقَكُمْ

created you

khalaqakum

وَٱلْجِبِلَّةَ

and the generations

wal-jibilata

ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ

the former

l-awalīna

١٨٤

And fear He who created you and the former creation."1

— Saheeh International

قَالُوٓا۟

They said

qālū

إِنَّمَآ

Only

innamā

أَنتَ

you

anta

مِنَ

(are) of

mina

ٱلْمُسَحَّرِينَ

those bewitched

l-musaḥarīna

١٨٥

They said, "You are only of those affected by magic.

— Saheeh International

وَمَآ

And not

wamā

أَنتَ

you

anta

إِلَّا

(are) except

illā

بَشَرٌۭ

a man

basharun

مِّثْلُنَا

like us

mith'lunā

وَإِن

and indeed

wa-in

نَّظُنُّكَ

we think you

naẓunnuka

لَمِنَ

surely (are) of

lamina

ٱلْكَـٰذِبِينَ

the liars

l-kādhibīna

١٨٦

You are but a man like ourselves, and indeed, we think you are among the liars.

— Saheeh International

فَأَسْقِطْ

Then cause to fall

fa-asqiṭ

عَلَيْنَا

upon us

ʿalaynā

كِسَفًۭا

fragments

kisafan

مِّنَ

of

mina

ٱلسَّمَآءِ

the sky

l-samāi

إِن

if

in

كُنتَ

you are

kunta

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ

the truthful

l-ṣādiqīna

١٨٧

So cause to fall upon us fragments of the sky, if you should be of the truthful."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

رَبِّىٓ

My Lord

rabbī

أَعْلَمُ

knows best

aʿlamu

بِمَا

of what

bimā

تَعْمَلُونَ

you do

taʿmalūna

١٨٨

He said, "My Lord is most knowing of what you do."

— Saheeh International

فَكَذَّبُوهُ

But they denied him

fakadhabūhu

فَأَخَذَهُمْ

so seized them

fa-akhadhahum

عَذَابُ

(the) punishment

ʿadhābu

يَوْمِ

(of the) day

yawmi

ٱلظُّلَّةِ ۚ

(of) the shadow

l-ẓulati

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed, it

innahu

كَانَ

was

kāna

عَذَابَ

(the) punishment

ʿadhāba

يَوْمٍ

(of) a Day

yawmin

عَظِيمٍ

Great

ʿaẓīmin

١٨٩

And they denied him, so the punishment of the day of the black cloud seized them. Indeed, it was the punishment of a terrible day.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

فِى

in

ذَٰلِكَ

that

dhālika

لَـَٔايَةًۭ ۖ

surely, is a sign

laāyatan

وَمَا

but not

wamā

كَانَ

are

kāna

أَكْثَرُهُم

most of them

aktharuhum

مُّؤْمِنِينَ

believers

mu'minīna

١٩٠

Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers.

— Saheeh International

وَإِنَّ

And indeed

wa-inna

رَبَّكَ

your Lord

rabbaka

لَهُوَ

surely, He

lahuwa

ٱلْعَزِيزُ

(is) the All-Mighty

l-ʿazīzu

ٱلرَّحِيمُ

the Most Merciful

l-raḥīmu

١٩١

And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful.

— Saheeh International

وَإِنَّهُۥ

And indeed, it

wa-innahu

لَتَنزِيلُ

surely, is a Revelation

latanzīlu

رَبِّ

(of the) Lord

rabbi

ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

(of) the worlds

l-ʿālamīna

١٩٢

And indeed, it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is the revelation of the Lord of the worlds.

— Saheeh International

نَزَلَ

Has brought it down

nazala

بِهِ

Has brought it down

bihi

ٱلرُّوحُ

the Spirit

l-rūḥu

ٱلْأَمِينُ

[the] Trustworthy

l-amīnu

١٩٣

The Trustworthy Spirit [i.e., Gabriel] has brought it down

— Saheeh International

عَلَىٰ

Upon

ʿalā

قَلْبِكَ

your heart

qalbika

لِتَكُونَ

that you may be

litakūna

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلْمُنذِرِينَ

the warners

l-mundhirīna

١٩٤

Upon your heart, [O Muḥammad] - that you may be of the warners -

— Saheeh International

بِلِسَانٍ

In language

bilisānin

عَرَبِىٍّۢ

Arabic

ʿarabiyyin

مُّبِينٍۢ

clear

mubīnin

١٩٥

In a clear Arabic language.

— Saheeh International

وَإِنَّهُۥ

And indeed, it

wa-innahu

لَفِى

surely, (is) in

lafī

زُبُرِ

(the) Scriptures

zuburi

ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ

(of) the former (people)

l-awalīna

١٩٦

And indeed, it is [mentioned] in the scriptures of former peoples.

— Saheeh International

أَوَلَمْ

Is it not

awalam

يَكُن

Is it not

yakun

لَّهُمْ

to them

lahum

ءَايَةً

a sign

āyatan

أَن

that

an

يَعْلَمَهُۥ

know it

yaʿlamahu

عُلَمَـٰٓؤُا۟

(the) scholars

ʿulamāu

بَنِىٓ

(of the) Children

banī

إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ

(of) Israel

is'rāīla

١٩٧

And has it not been a sign to them that it is recognized by the scholars of the Children of Israel?

— Saheeh International

وَلَوْ

And if

walaw

نَزَّلْنَـٰهُ

We (had) revealed it

nazzalnāhu

عَلَىٰ

to

ʿalā

بَعْضِ

any

baʿḍi

ٱلْأَعْجَمِينَ

(of) the non-Arabs

l-aʿjamīna

١٩٨

And even if We had revealed it to one among the foreigners1

— Saheeh International

فَقَرَأَهُۥ

And he (had) recited it

faqara-ahu

عَلَيْهِم

to them

ʿalayhim

مَّا

not

كَانُوا۟

they would

kānū

بِهِۦ

in it

bihi

مُؤْمِنِينَ

(be) believers

mu'minīna

١٩٩

And he had recited it to them [perfectly],1 they would [still] not have been believers in it.

— Saheeh International

كَذَٰلِكَ

Thus

kadhālika

سَلَكْنَـٰهُ

We have inserted it

salaknāhu

فِى

into

قُلُوبِ

(the) hearts

qulūbi

ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ

(of) the criminals

l-muj'rimīna

٢٠٠

Thus have We inserted it [i.e., disbelief] into the hearts of the criminals.

— Saheeh International

لَا

Not

يُؤْمِنُونَ

they will believe

yu'minūna

بِهِۦ

in it

bihi

حَتَّىٰ

until

ḥattā

يَرَوُا۟

they see

yarawū

ٱلْعَذَابَ

the punishment

l-ʿadhāba

ٱلْأَلِيمَ

[the] painful

l-alīma

٢٠١

They will not believe in it until they see the painful punishment.

— Saheeh International

فَيَأْتِيَهُم

And it will come to them

fayatiyahum

بَغْتَةًۭ

suddenly

baghtatan

وَهُمْ

while they

wahum

لَا

(do) not

يَشْعُرُونَ

perceive

yashʿurūna

٢٠٢

And it will come to them suddenly while they perceive [it] not.

— Saheeh International

فَيَقُولُوا۟

Then they will say

fayaqūlū

هَلْ

Are

hal

نَحْنُ

we

naḥnu

مُنظَرُونَ

(to be) reprieved

munẓarūna

٢٠٣

And they will say, "May we be reprieved?"

— Saheeh International

أَفَبِعَذَابِنَا

So is it for Our punishment

afabiʿadhābinā

يَسْتَعْجِلُونَ

they wish to hasten

yastaʿjilūna

٢٠٤

So for Our punishment are they impatient?

— Saheeh International

أَفَرَءَيْتَ

Then have you seen

afara-ayta

إِن

if

in

مَّتَّعْنَـٰهُمْ

We let them enjoy

mattaʿnāhum

سِنِينَ

(for) years

sinīna

٢٠٥

Then have you considered if We gave them enjoyment for years

— Saheeh International

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

جَآءَهُم

comes to them

jāahum

مَّا

what

كَانُوا۟

they were

kānū

يُوعَدُونَ

promised

yūʿadūna

٢٠٦

And then there came to them that which they were promised?

— Saheeh International

مَآ

Not

أَغْنَىٰ

(will) avail

aghnā

عَنْهُم

them

ʿanhum

مَّا

what

كَانُوا۟

enjoyment they were given

kānū

يُمَتَّعُونَ

enjoyment they were given

yumattaʿūna

٢٠٧

They would not be availed by the enjoyment with which they were provided.

— Saheeh International

وَمَآ

And not

wamā

أَهْلَكْنَا

We destroyed

ahlaknā

مِن

any

min

قَرْيَةٍ

town

qaryatin

إِلَّا

but

illā

لَهَا

it had

lahā

مُنذِرُونَ

warners

mundhirūna

٢٠٨

And We did not destroy any city except that it had warners

— Saheeh International

ذِكْرَىٰ

(To) remind

dhik'rā

وَمَا

and not

wamā

كُنَّا

We are

kunnā

ظَـٰلِمِينَ

unjust

ẓālimīna

٢٠٩

As a reminder; and never have We been unjust.

— Saheeh International

وَمَا

And not

wamā

تَنَزَّلَتْ

have brought it down

tanazzalat

بِهِ

have brought it down

bihi

ٱلشَّيَـٰطِينُ

the devils

l-shayāṭīnu

٢١٠

And the devils have not brought it [i.e., the revelation] down.1

— Saheeh International

وَمَا

And not

wamā

يَنۢبَغِى

(it) suits

yanbaghī

لَهُمْ

[for] them

lahum

وَمَا

and not

wamā

يَسْتَطِيعُونَ

they are able

yastaṭīʿūna

٢١١

It is not allowable for them, nor would they be able.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّهُمْ

Indeed, they

innahum

عَنِ

from

ʿani

ٱلسَّمْعِ

the hearing

l-samʿi

لَمَعْزُولُونَ

(are) surely banished

lamaʿzūlūna

٢١٢

Indeed they, from [its] hearing, are removed.1

— Saheeh International

فَلَا

So (do) not

falā

تَدْعُ

invoke

tadʿu

مَعَ

with

maʿa

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

إِلَـٰهًا

god

ilāhan

ءَاخَرَ

another

ākhara

فَتَكُونَ

lest you be

fatakūna

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلْمُعَذَّبِينَ

those punished

l-muʿadhabīna

٢١٣

So do not invoke1 with Allāh another deity and [thus] be among the punished.

— Saheeh International

وَأَنذِرْ

And warn

wa-andhir

عَشِيرَتَكَ

your kindred

ʿashīrataka

ٱلْأَقْرَبِينَ

[the] closest

l-aqrabīna

٢١٤

And warn, [O Muḥammad], your closest kindred.

— Saheeh International

وَٱخْفِضْ

And lower

wa-ikh'fiḍ

جَنَاحَكَ

your wing

janāḥaka

لِمَنِ

to (those) who

limani

ٱتَّبَعَكَ

follow you

ittabaʿaka

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

the believers

l-mu'minīna

٢١٥

And lower your wing [i.e., show kindness] to those who follow you of the believers.

— Saheeh International

فَإِنْ

Then if

fa-in

عَصَوْكَ

they disobey you

ʿaṣawka

فَقُلْ

then say

faqul

إِنِّى

Indeed, I am

innī

بَرِىٓءٌۭ

innocent

barīon

مِّمَّا

of what

mimmā

تَعْمَلُونَ

you do

taʿmalūna

٢١٦

And if they disobey you, then say, "Indeed, I am disassociated from what you are doing."

— Saheeh International

وَتَوَكَّلْ

And put (your) trust

watawakkal

عَلَى

in

ʿalā

ٱلْعَزِيزِ

the All-Mighty

l-ʿazīzi

ٱلرَّحِيمِ

the Most Merciful

l-raḥīmi

٢١٧

And rely upon the Exalted in Might, the Merciful,

— Saheeh International

ٱلَّذِى

The One Who

alladhī

يَرَىٰكَ

sees you

yarāka

حِينَ

when

ḥīna

تَقُومُ

you stand up

taqūmu

٢١٨

Who sees you when you arise1

— Saheeh International

وَتَقَلُّبَكَ

And your movements

wataqallubaka

فِى

among

ٱلسَّـٰجِدِينَ

those who prostrate

l-sājidīna

٢١٩

And your movement among those who prostrate.1

— Saheeh International

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed, He

innahu

هُوَ

[He]

huwa

ٱلسَّمِيعُ

(is) the All-Hearer

l-samīʿu

ٱلْعَلِيمُ

the All-Knower

l-ʿalīmu

٢٢٠

Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing.

— Saheeh International

هَلْ

Shall

hal

أُنَبِّئُكُمْ

I inform you

unabbi-ukum

عَلَىٰ

upon

ʿalā

مَن

whom

man

تَنَزَّلُ

descend

tanazzalu

ٱلشَّيَـٰطِينُ

the devils

l-shayāṭīnu

٢٢١

Shall I inform you upon whom the devils descend?

— Saheeh International

تَنَزَّلُ

They descend

tanazzalu

عَلَىٰ

upon

ʿalā

كُلِّ

every

kulli

أَفَّاكٍ

liar

affākin

أَثِيمٍۢ

sinful

athīmin

٢٢٢

They descend upon every sinful liar.

— Saheeh International

يُلْقُونَ

They pass on

yul'qūna

ٱلسَّمْعَ

(what is) heard

l-samʿa

وَأَكْثَرُهُمْ

and most of them

wa-aktharuhum

كَـٰذِبُونَ

(are) liars

kādhibūna

٢٢٣

They pass on what is heard,1 and most of them are liars.

— Saheeh International

وَٱلشُّعَرَآءُ

And the poets

wal-shuʿarāu

يَتَّبِعُهُمُ

follow them

yattabiʿuhumu

ٱلْغَاوُۥنَ

the deviators

l-ghāwūna

٢٢٤

And the poets - [only] the deviators follow them;

— Saheeh International

أَلَمْ

Do not

alam

تَرَ

you see

tara

أَنَّهُمْ

that they

annahum

فِى

in

كُلِّ

every

kulli

وَادٍۢ

valley

wādin

يَهِيمُونَ

[they] roam

yahīmūna

٢٢٥

Do you not see that in every valley they roam1

— Saheeh International

وَأَنَّهُمْ

And that they

wa-annahum

يَقُولُونَ

say

yaqūlūna

مَا

what

لَا

not

يَفْعَلُونَ

they do

yafʿalūna

٢٢٦

And that they say what they do not do? -

— Saheeh International

إِلَّا

Except

illā

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

ءَامَنُوا۟

believe

āmanū

وَعَمِلُوا۟

and do

waʿamilū

ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ

righteous deeds

l-ṣāliḥāti

وَذَكَرُوا۟

and remember

wadhakarū

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

كَثِيرًۭا

much

kathīran

وَٱنتَصَرُوا۟

and defend themselves

wa-intaṣarū

مِنۢ

after

min

بَعْدِ

after

baʿdi

مَا

after

ظُلِمُوا۟ ۗ

they were wronged

ẓulimū

وَسَيَعْلَمُ

And will come to know

wasayaʿlamu

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

ظَلَمُوٓا۟

have wronged

ẓalamū

أَىَّ

(to) what

ayya

مُنقَلَبٍۢ

return

munqalabin

يَنقَلِبُونَ

they will return

yanqalibūna

٢٢٧

Except those [poets] who believe and do righteous deeds and remember Allāh often and defend [the Muslims]1 after they were wronged. And those who have wronged are going to know to what [kind of] return they will be returned.

— Saheeh International
