The Criterion

الفرقان

تَبَارَكَ

Blessed is He

tabāraka

ٱلَّذِى

Who

alladhī

نَزَّلَ

sent down

nazzala

ٱلْفُرْقَانَ

the Criterion

l-fur'qāna

عَلَىٰ

upon

ʿalā

عَبْدِهِۦ

His slave

ʿabdihi

لِيَكُونَ

that he may be

liyakūna

لِلْعَـٰلَمِينَ

to the worlds

lil'ʿālamīna

نَذِيرًا

a warner

nadhīran

١

Blessed is He who sent down the Criterion upon His Servant that he may be to the worlds a warner -

— Saheeh International

ٱلَّذِى

The One Who

alladhī

لَهُۥ

to Him (belongs)

lahu

مُلْكُ

(the) dominion

mul'ku

ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ

(of) the heavens

l-samāwāti

وَٱلْأَرْضِ

and the earth

wal-arḍi

وَلَمْ

and not

walam

يَتَّخِذْ

He has taken

yattakhidh

وَلَدًۭا

a son

waladan

وَلَمْ

and not

walam

يَكُن

He has

yakun

لَّهُۥ

for Him

lahu

شَرِيكٌۭ

a partner

sharīkun

فِى

in

ٱلْمُلْكِ

the dominion

l-mul'ki

وَخَلَقَ

and He (has) created

wakhalaqa

كُلَّ

every

kulla

شَىْءٍۢ

thing

shayin

فَقَدَّرَهُۥ

and determined it

faqaddarahu

تَقْدِيرًۭا

(with) determination

taqdīran

٢

He to whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and who has not taken a son and has not had a partner in dominion and has created each thing and determined it with [precise] determination.

— Saheeh International

وَٱتَّخَذُوا۟

Yet they have taken

wa-ittakhadhū

مِن

besides Him

min

دُونِهِۦٓ

besides Him

dūnihi

ءَالِهَةًۭ

gods

ālihatan

لَّا

not

يَخْلُقُونَ

they create

yakhluqūna

شَيْـًۭٔا

anything

shayan

وَهُمْ

while they

wahum

يُخْلَقُونَ

are created

yukh'laqūna

وَلَا

and not

walā

يَمْلِكُونَ

they possess

yamlikūna

لِأَنفُسِهِمْ

for themselves

li-anfusihim

ضَرًّۭا

any harm

ḍarran

وَلَا

and not

walā

نَفْعًۭا

any benefit

nafʿan

وَلَا

and not

walā

يَمْلِكُونَ

they control

yamlikūna

مَوْتًۭا

death

mawtan

وَلَا

and not

walā

حَيَوٰةًۭ

life

ḥayatan

وَلَا

and not

walā

نُشُورًۭا

resurrection

nushūran

٣

But they have taken besides Him gods which create nothing, while they are created, and possess not for themselves any harm or benefit and possess not [power to cause] death or life or resurrection.

— Saheeh International

وَقَالَ

And say

waqāla

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

كَفَرُوٓا۟

disbelieve

kafarū

إِنْ

Not

in

هَـٰذَآ

this

hādhā

إِلَّآ

(is) but

illā

إِفْكٌ

a lie

if'kun

ٱفْتَرَىٰهُ

he invented it

if'tarāhu

وَأَعَانَهُۥ

and helped him

wa-aʿānahu

عَلَيْهِ

at it

ʿalayhi

قَوْمٌ

people

qawmun

ءَاخَرُونَ ۖ

other

ākharūna

فَقَدْ

But verily

faqad

جَآءُو

they (have) produced

jāū

ظُلْمًۭا

an injustice

ẓul'man

وَزُورًۭا

and a lie

wazūran

٤

And those who disbelieve say, "This [Qur’ān] is not except a falsehood he invented, and another people assisted him in it." But they have committed an injustice and a lie.

— Saheeh International

وَقَالُوٓا۟

And they say

waqālū

أَسَـٰطِيرُ

Tales

asāṭīru

ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ

(of) the former people

l-awalīna

ٱكْتَتَبَهَا

which he has had written

ik'tatabahā

فَهِىَ

and they

fahiya

تُمْلَىٰ

are dictated

tum'lā

عَلَيْهِ

to him

ʿalayhi

بُكْرَةًۭ

morning

buk'ratan

وَأَصِيلًۭا

and evening

wa-aṣīlan

٥

And they say, "Legends of the former peoples which he has written down, and they are dictated to him morning and afternoon."

— Saheeh International

قُلْ

Say

qul

أَنزَلَهُ

Has sent it down

anzalahu

ٱلَّذِى

the One Who

alladhī

يَعْلَمُ

knows

yaʿlamu

ٱلسِّرَّ

the secret

l-sira

فِى

in

ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ

the heavens

l-samāwāti

وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۚ

and the earth

wal-arḍi

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed, He

innahu

كَانَ

is

kāna

غَفُورًۭا

Oft-Forgiving

ghafūran

رَّحِيمًۭا

Most Merciful

raḥīman

٦

Say, [O Muḥammad], "It has been revealed by He who knows [every] secret within the heavens and the earth. Indeed, He is ever Forgiving and Merciful."

— Saheeh International

وَقَالُوا۟

And they say

waqālū

مَالِ

Why does

māli

هَـٰذَا

this

hādhā

ٱلرَّسُولِ

Messenger

l-rasūli

يَأْكُلُ

eat

yakulu

ٱلطَّعَامَ

[the] food

l-ṭaʿāma

وَيَمْشِى

and walk

wayamshī

فِى

in

ٱلْأَسْوَاقِ ۙ

the markets

l-aswāqi

لَوْلَآ

Why not

lawlā

أُنزِلَ

is sent down

unzila

إِلَيْهِ

to him

ilayhi

مَلَكٌۭ

an Angel

malakun

فَيَكُونَ

then he be

fayakūna

مَعَهُۥ

with him

maʿahu

نَذِيرًا

a warner

nadhīran

٧

And they say, "What is this messenger that eats food and walks in the markets? Why was there not sent down to him an angel so he would be with him a warner?

— Saheeh International

أَوْ

Or

aw

يُلْقَىٰٓ

is delivered

yul'qā

إِلَيْهِ

to him

ilayhi

كَنزٌ

a treasure

kanzun

أَوْ

or

aw

تَكُونُ

is

takūnu

لَهُۥ

for him

lahu

جَنَّةٌۭ

a garden

jannatun

يَأْكُلُ

he may eat

yakulu

مِنْهَا ۚ

from it

min'hā

وَقَالَ

And say

waqāla

ٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَ

the wrongdoers

l-ẓālimūna

إِن

Not

in

تَتَّبِعُونَ

you follow

tattabiʿūna

إِلَّا

but

illā

رَجُلًۭا

a man

rajulan

مَّسْحُورًا

bewitched

masḥūran

٨

Or [why is not] a treasure presented to him [from heaven], or does he [not] have a garden from which he eats?" And the wrongdoers say, "You follow not but a man affected by magic."

— Saheeh International

ٱنظُرْ

See

unẓur

كَيْفَ

how

kayfa

ضَرَبُوا۟

they set forth

ḍarabū

لَكَ

for you

laka

ٱلْأَمْثَـٰلَ

the similitudes

l-amthāla

فَضَلُّوا۟

but they have gone astray

faḍallū

فَلَا

so not

falā

يَسْتَطِيعُونَ

they are able (to find)

yastaṭīʿūna

سَبِيلًۭا

a way

sabīlan

٩

Look how they strike for you comparisons;1 but they have strayed, so they cannot [find] a way.

— Saheeh International

تَبَارَكَ

Blessed is He

tabāraka

ٱلَّذِىٓ

Who

alladhī

إِن

if

in

شَآءَ

He willed

shāa

جَعَلَ

(could have) made

jaʿala

لَكَ

for you

laka

خَيْرًۭا

better

khayran

مِّن

than

min

ذَٰلِكَ

that

dhālika

جَنَّـٰتٍۢ

gardens

jannātin

تَجْرِى

flow

tajrī

مِن

from

min

تَحْتِهَا

underneath it

taḥtihā

ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرُ

the rivers

l-anhāru

وَيَجْعَل

and He (could) make

wayajʿal

لَّكَ

for you

laka

قُصُورًۢا

palaces

quṣūran

١٠

Blessed is He who, if He willed, could have made for you [something] better than that - gardens beneath which rivers flow - and could make for you palaces.

— Saheeh International

بَلْ

Nay

bal

كَذَّبُوا۟

they deny

kadhabū

بِٱلسَّاعَةِ ۖ

the Hour

bil-sāʿati

وَأَعْتَدْنَا

and We have prepared

wa-aʿtadnā

لِمَن

for (those) who

liman

كَذَّبَ

deny

kadhaba

بِٱلسَّاعَةِ

the Hour

bil-sāʿati

سَعِيرًا

a Blazing Fire

saʿīran

١١

But they have denied the Hour, and We have prepared for those who deny the Hour a Blaze.

— Saheeh International

إِذَا

When

idhā

رَأَتْهُم

it sees them

ra-athum

مِّن

from

min

مَّكَانٍۭ

a place

makānin

بَعِيدٍۢ

far

baʿīdin

سَمِعُوا۟

they will hear

samiʿū

لَهَا

its

lahā

تَغَيُّظًۭا

raging

taghayyuẓan

وَزَفِيرًۭا

and roaring

wazafīran

١٢

When it [i.e., the Hellfire] sees them from a distant place, they will hear its fury and roaring.

— Saheeh International

وَإِذَآ

And when

wa-idhā

أُلْقُوا۟

they are thrown

ul'qū

مِنْهَا

thereof

min'hā

مَكَانًۭا

(in) a place

makānan

ضَيِّقًۭا

narrow

ḍayyiqan

مُّقَرَّنِينَ

bound in chains

muqarranīna

دَعَوْا۟

they will call

daʿaw

هُنَالِكَ

there

hunālika

ثُبُورًۭا

(for) destruction

thubūran

١٣

And when they are thrown into a narrow place therein bound in chains, they will cry out thereupon for destruction.

— Saheeh International

لَّا

(Do) not

تَدْعُوا۟

call

tadʿū

ٱلْيَوْمَ

this day

l-yawma

ثُبُورًۭا

(for) destruction

thubūran

وَٰحِدًۭا

one

wāḥidan

وَٱدْعُوا۟

but call

wa-id'ʿū

ثُبُورًۭا

(for) destructions

thubūran

كَثِيرًۭا

many

kathīran

١٤

[They will be told], "Do not cry this Day for one destruction but cry for much destruction."

— Saheeh International

قُلْ

Say

qul

أَذَٰلِكَ

Is that

adhālika

خَيْرٌ

better

khayrun

أَمْ

or

am

جَنَّةُ

Garden

jannatu

ٱلْخُلْدِ

(of) Eternity

l-khul'di

ٱلَّتِى

which

allatī

وُعِدَ

is promised

wuʿida

ٱلْمُتَّقُونَ ۚ

(to) the righteous

l-mutaqūna

كَانَتْ

It will be

kānat

لَهُمْ

for them

lahum

جَزَآءًۭ

a reward

jazāan

وَمَصِيرًۭا

and destination

wamaṣīran

١٥

Say, "Is that better or the Garden of Eternity which is promised to the righteous? It will be for them a reward and destination.

— Saheeh International

لَّهُمْ

For them

lahum

فِيهَا

therein

fīhā

مَا

(is) whatever

يَشَآءُونَ

they wish

yashāūna

خَـٰلِدِينَ ۚ

they will abide forever

khālidīna

كَانَ

It is

kāna

عَلَىٰ

on

ʿalā

رَبِّكَ

your Lord

rabbika

وَعْدًۭا

a promise

waʿdan

مَّسْـُٔولًۭا

requested

masūlan

١٦

For them therein is whatever they wish, [while] abiding eternally. It is ever upon your Lord a promise [worthy to be] requested.1

— Saheeh International

وَيَوْمَ

And (the) Day

wayawma

يَحْشُرُهُمْ

He will gather them

yaḥshuruhum

وَمَا

and what

wamā

يَعْبُدُونَ

they worship

yaʿbudūna

مِن

besides Allah

min

دُونِ

besides Allah

dūni

ٱللَّهِ

besides Allah

l-lahi

فَيَقُولُ

and He will say

fayaqūlu

ءَأَنتُمْ

Did you

a-antum

أَضْلَلْتُمْ

[you] mislead

aḍlaltum

عِبَادِى

My slaves

ʿibādī

هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ

these

hāulāi

أَمْ

or

am

هُمْ

they

hum

ضَلُّوا۟

went astray

ḍallū

ٱلسَّبِيلَ

(from) the way

l-sabīla

١٧

And [mention] the Day He will gather them and that which they worship besides Allāh and will say, "Did you mislead these, My servants, or did they [themselves] stray from the way?"

— Saheeh International

قَالُوا۟

They say

qālū

سُبْحَـٰنَكَ

Glory be to You

sub'ḥānaka

مَا

Not

كَانَ

it was proper

kāna

يَنۢبَغِى

it was proper

yanbaghī

لَنَآ

for us

lanā

أَن

that

an

نَّتَّخِذَ

we take

nattakhidha

مِن

besides You

min

دُونِكَ

besides You

dūnika

مِنْ

any

min

أَوْلِيَآءَ

protectors

awliyāa

وَلَـٰكِن

But

walākin

مَّتَّعْتَهُمْ

You gave them comforts

mattaʿtahum

وَءَابَآءَهُمْ

and their forefathers

waābāahum

حَتَّىٰ

until

ḥattā

نَسُوا۟

they forgot

nasū

ٱلذِّكْرَ

the Message

l-dhik'ra

وَكَانُوا۟

and became

wakānū

قَوْمًۢا

a people

qawman

بُورًۭا

ruined

būran

١٨

They will say, "Exalted are You! It was not for us to take besides You any allies [i.e., protectors]. But You provided comforts for them and their fathers until they forgot the message and became a people ruined."

— Saheeh International

فَقَدْ

So verily

faqad

كَذَّبُوكُم

they deny you

kadhabūkum

بِمَا

in what

bimā

تَقُولُونَ

you say

taqūlūna

فَمَا

so not

famā

تَسْتَطِيعُونَ

you are able

tastaṭīʿūna

صَرْفًۭا

(to) avert

ṣarfan

وَلَا

and not

walā

نَصْرًۭا ۚ

(to) help

naṣran

وَمَن

And whoever

waman

يَظْلِم

does wrong

yaẓlim

مِّنكُمْ

among you

minkum

نُذِقْهُ

We will make him taste

nudhiq'hu

عَذَابًۭا

a punishment

ʿadhāban

كَبِيرًۭا

great

kabīran

١٩

So they will deny you, [disbelievers], in what you say,1 and you cannot avert [punishment] or [find] help. And whoever commits injustice2 among you - We will make him taste a great punishment.

— Saheeh International

وَمَآ

And not

wamā

أَرْسَلْنَا

We sent

arsalnā

قَبْلَكَ

before you

qablaka

مِنَ

any

mina

ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ

Messengers

l-mur'salīna

إِلَّآ

but

illā

إِنَّهُمْ

indeed, they

innahum

لَيَأْكُلُونَ

[surely] ate

layakulūna

ٱلطَّعَامَ

food

l-ṭaʿāma

وَيَمْشُونَ

and walked

wayamshūna

فِى

in

ٱلْأَسْوَاقِ ۗ

the markets

l-aswāqi

وَجَعَلْنَا

And We have made

wajaʿalnā

بَعْضَكُمْ

some of you

baʿḍakum

لِبَعْضٍۢ

for others

libaʿḍin

فِتْنَةً

a trial

fit'natan

أَتَصْبِرُونَ ۗ

will you have patience

ataṣbirūna

وَكَانَ

And is

wakāna

رَبُّكَ

your Lord

rabbuka

بَصِيرًۭا

All-Seer

baṣīran

٢٠

And We did not send before you, [O Muḥammad], any of the messengers except that they ate food and walked in the markets. And We have made some of you [people] as trial for others - will you have patience? And ever is your Lord, Seeing.

— Saheeh International

۞ وَقَالَ

And said

waqāla

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

لَا

(do) not

يَرْجُونَ

expect

yarjūna

لِقَآءَنَا

(the) meeting with Us

liqāanā

لَوْلَآ

Why not

lawlā

أُنزِلَ

are sent down

unzila

عَلَيْنَا

to us

ʿalaynā

ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ

the Angels

l-malāikatu

أَوْ

or

aw

نَرَىٰ

we see

narā

رَبَّنَا ۗ

our Lord

rabbanā

لَقَدِ

Indeed

laqadi

ٱسْتَكْبَرُوا۟

they have become arrogant

is'takbarū

فِىٓ

within

أَنفُسِهِمْ

themselves

anfusihim

وَعَتَوْ

and (become) insolent

waʿataw

عُتُوًّۭا

(with) insolence

ʿutuwwan

كَبِيرًۭا

great

kabīran

٢١

And those who do not expect the meeting with Us say, "Why were not angels sent down to us, or [why] do we [not] see our Lord?" They have certainly become arrogant within themselves1 and [become] insolent with great insolence.

— Saheeh International

يَوْمَ

(The) Day

yawma

يَرَوْنَ

they see

yarawna

ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةَ

the Angels

l-malāikata

لَا

no

بُشْرَىٰ

glad tidings

bush'rā

يَوْمَئِذٍۢ

(will be) that Day

yawma-idhin

لِّلْمُجْرِمِينَ

for the criminals

lil'muj'rimīna

وَيَقُولُونَ

and they will say

wayaqūlūna

حِجْرًۭا

A partition

ḥij'ran

مَّحْجُورًۭا

forbidden

maḥjūran

٢٢

The day they see the angels1 - no good tidings will there be that day for the criminals, and [the angels] will say, "Prevented and inaccessible."2

— Saheeh International

وَقَدِمْنَآ

And We will proceed

waqadim'nā

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

مَا

whatever

عَمِلُوا۟

they did

ʿamilū

مِنْ

of

min

عَمَلٍۢ

(the) deed(s)

ʿamalin

فَجَعَلْنَـٰهُ

and We will make them

fajaʿalnāhu

هَبَآءًۭ

(as) dust

habāan

مَّنثُورًا

dispersed

manthūran

٢٣

And We will approach [i.e., regard]1 what they have done of deeds and make them as dust dispersed.

— Saheeh International

أَصْحَـٰبُ

(The) companions

aṣḥābu

ٱلْجَنَّةِ

(of) Paradise

l-janati

يَوْمَئِذٍ

that Day

yawma-idhin

خَيْرٌۭ

(will be in) a better

khayrun

مُّسْتَقَرًّۭا

abode

mus'taqarran

وَأَحْسَنُ

and a better

wa-aḥsanu

مَقِيلًۭا

resting-place

maqīlan

٢٤

The companions of Paradise, that Day, are [in] a better settlement and better resting place.

— Saheeh International

وَيَوْمَ

And (the) Day

wayawma

تَشَقَّقُ

will split open

tashaqqaqu

ٱلسَّمَآءُ

the heavens

l-samāu

بِٱلْغَمَـٰمِ

with the clouds

bil-ghamāmi

وَنُزِّلَ

and (will be) sent down

wanuzzila

ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ

the Angels

l-malāikatu

تَنزِيلًا

descending

tanzīlan

٢٥

And [mention] the Day when the heaven will split open with [emerging] clouds,1 and the angels will be sent down in successive descent.

— Saheeh International

ٱلْمُلْكُ

The Sovereignty

al-mul'ku

يَوْمَئِذٍ

that Day

yawma-idhin

ٱلْحَقُّ

(will be) truly

l-ḥaqu

لِلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ۚ

for the Most Gracious

lilrraḥmāni

وَكَانَ

And (it will) be

wakāna

يَوْمًا

a Day

yawman

عَلَى

for

ʿalā

ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ

the disbelievers

l-kāfirīna

عَسِيرًۭا

difficult

ʿasīran

٢٦

True sovereignty, that Day, is for the Most Merciful. And it will be upon the disbelievers a difficult Day.

— Saheeh International

وَيَوْمَ

And (the) Day

wayawma

يَعَضُّ

will bite

yaʿaḍḍu

ٱلظَّالِمُ

the wrongdoer

l-ẓālimu

عَلَىٰ

[on]

ʿalā

يَدَيْهِ

his hands

yadayhi

يَقُولُ

he will say

yaqūlu

يَـٰلَيْتَنِى

O I wish

yālaytanī

ٱتَّخَذْتُ

I had taken

ittakhadhtu

مَعَ

with

maʿa

ٱلرَّسُولِ

the Messenger

l-rasūli

سَبِيلًۭا

a way

sabīlan

٢٧

And the Day the wrongdoer will bite on his hands [in regret] he will say, "Oh, I wish I had taken with the Messenger a way.1

— Saheeh International

يَـٰوَيْلَتَىٰ

O woe to me

yāwaylatā

لَيْتَنِى

I wish

laytanī

لَمْ

not

lam

أَتَّخِذْ

I had taken

attakhidh

فُلَانًا

that one

fulānan

خَلِيلًۭا

(as) a friend

khalīlan

٢٨

Oh, woe to me! I wish I had not taken that one1 as a friend.

— Saheeh International

لَّقَدْ

Verily

laqad

أَضَلَّنِى

he led me astray

aḍallanī

عَنِ

from

ʿani

ٱلذِّكْرِ

the Reminder

l-dhik'ri

بَعْدَ

after

baʿda

إِذْ

[when]

idh

جَآءَنِى ۗ

it (had) come to me

jāanī

وَكَانَ

And is

wakāna

ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُ

the Shaitaan

l-shayṭānu

لِلْإِنسَـٰنِ

to the man

lil'insāni

خَذُولًۭا

a deserter

khadhūlan

٢٩

He led me away from the remembrance1 after it had come to me. And ever is Satan, to man, a deserter."2

— Saheeh International

وَقَالَ

And said

waqāla

ٱلرَّسُولُ

the Messenger

l-rasūlu

يَـٰرَبِّ

O my Lord

yārabbi

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

قَوْمِى

my people

qawmī

ٱتَّخَذُوا۟

took

ittakhadhū

هَـٰذَا

this

hādhā

ٱلْقُرْءَانَ

the Quran

l-qur'āna

مَهْجُورًۭا

(as) a forsaken thing

mahjūran

٣٠

And the Messenger has said, "O my Lord, indeed my people have taken this Qur’ān as [a thing] abandoned."1

— Saheeh International

وَكَذَٰلِكَ

And thus

wakadhālika

جَعَلْنَا

We have made

jaʿalnā

لِكُلِّ

for every

likulli

نَبِىٍّ

Prophet

nabiyyin

عَدُوًّۭا

an enemy

ʿaduwwan

مِّنَ

among

mina

ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ ۗ

the criminals

l-muj'rimīna

وَكَفَىٰ

But sufficient is

wakafā

بِرَبِّكَ

your Lord

birabbika

هَادِيًۭا

(as) a Guide

hādiyan

وَنَصِيرًۭا

and a Helper

wanaṣīran

٣١

And thus have We made for every prophet an enemy from among the criminals. But sufficient is your Lord as a guide and a helper.

— Saheeh International

وَقَالَ

And said

waqāla

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

كَفَرُوا۟

disbelieve

kafarū

لَوْلَا

Why not

lawlā

نُزِّلَ

was revealed

nuzzila

عَلَيْهِ

to him

ʿalayhi

ٱلْقُرْءَانُ

the Quran

l-qur'ānu

جُمْلَةًۭ

all at once

jum'latan

وَٰحِدَةًۭ ۚ

all at once

wāḥidatan

كَذَٰلِكَ

Thus

kadhālika

لِنُثَبِّتَ

that We may strengthen

linuthabbita

بِهِۦ

thereby

bihi

فُؤَادَكَ ۖ

your heart

fuādaka

وَرَتَّلْنَـٰهُ

and We have recited it

warattalnāhu

تَرْتِيلًۭا

(with distinct) recitation

tartīlan

٣٢

And those who disbelieve say, "Why was the Qur’ān not revealed to him all at once?" Thus [it is] that We may strengthen thereby your heart. And We have spaced it distinctly.1

— Saheeh International

وَلَا

And not

walā

يَأْتُونَكَ

they come to you

yatūnaka

بِمَثَلٍ

with an example

bimathalin

إِلَّا

but

illā

جِئْنَـٰكَ

We bring you

ji'nāka

بِٱلْحَقِّ

the truth

bil-ḥaqi

وَأَحْسَنَ

and (the) best

wa-aḥsana

تَفْسِيرًا

explanation

tafsīran

٣٣

And they do not come to you with an example [i.e., argument] except that We bring you the truth and the best explanation.

— Saheeh International

ٱلَّذِينَ

Those who

alladhīna

يُحْشَرُونَ

will be gathered

yuḥ'sharūna

عَلَىٰ

on

ʿalā

وُجُوهِهِمْ

their faces

wujūhihim

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

جَهَنَّمَ

Hell

jahannama

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

those

ulāika

شَرٌّۭ

(are the) worst

sharrun

مَّكَانًۭا

(in) position

makānan

وَأَضَلُّ

and most astray

wa-aḍallu

سَبِيلًۭا

(from the) way

sabīlan

٣٤

The ones who are gathered on their faces to Hell - those are the worst in position and farthest astray in [their] way.

— Saheeh International

وَلَقَدْ

And verily

walaqad

ءَاتَيْنَا

We gave

ātaynā

مُوسَى

Musa

mūsā

ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ

the Scripture

l-kitāba

وَجَعَلْنَا

and We appointed

wajaʿalnā

مَعَهُۥٓ

with him

maʿahu

أَخَاهُ

his brother

akhāhu

هَـٰرُونَ

Harun

hārūna

وَزِيرًۭا

(as) an assistant

wazīran

٣٥

And We had certainly given Moses the Scripture and appointed with him his brother Aaron as an assistant.

— Saheeh International

فَقُلْنَا

Then We said

faqul'nā

ٱذْهَبَآ

Go both of you

idh'habā

إِلَى

to

ilā

ٱلْقَوْمِ

the people

l-qawmi

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

كَذَّبُوا۟

have denied

kadhabū

بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا

Our Signs

biāyātinā

فَدَمَّرْنَـٰهُمْ

Then We destroyed them

fadammarnāhum

تَدْمِيرًۭا

(with) destruction

tadmīran

٣٦

And We said, "Go both of you to the people who have denied Our signs." Then We destroyed them with [complete] destruction.

— Saheeh International

وَقَوْمَ

And (the) people

waqawma

نُوحٍۢ

(of) Nuh

nūḥin

لَّمَّا

when

lammā

كَذَّبُوا۟

they denied

kadhabū

ٱلرُّسُلَ

the Messengers

l-rusula

أَغْرَقْنَـٰهُمْ

We drowned them

aghraqnāhum

وَجَعَلْنَـٰهُمْ

and We made them

wajaʿalnāhum

لِلنَّاسِ

for mankind

lilnnāsi

ءَايَةًۭ ۖ

a sign

āyatan

وَأَعْتَدْنَا

And We have prepared

wa-aʿtadnā

لِلظَّـٰلِمِينَ

for the wrongdoers

lilẓẓālimīna

عَذَابًا

a punishment

ʿadhāban

أَلِيمًۭا

painful

alīman

٣٧

And the people of Noah - when they denied the messengers,1 We drowned them, and We made them for mankind a sign. And We have prepared for the wrongdoers a painful punishment.

— Saheeh International

وَعَادًۭا

And Ad

waʿādan

وَثَمُودَا۟

and Thamud

wathamūdā

وَأَصْحَـٰبَ

and (the) dwellers

wa-aṣḥāba

ٱلرَّسِّ

(of) Ar-rass

l-rasi

وَقُرُونًۢا

and generations

waqurūnan

بَيْنَ

between

bayna

ذَٰلِكَ

that

dhālika

كَثِيرًۭا

many

kathīran

٣٨

And [We destroyed] ʿAad and Thamūd and the companions of the well1 and many generations between them.

— Saheeh International

وَكُلًّۭا

And each

wakullan

ضَرَبْنَا

We have set forth

ḍarabnā

لَهُ

for him

lahu

ٱلْأَمْثَـٰلَ ۖ

the examples

l-amthāla

وَكُلًّۭا

and each

wakullan

تَبَّرْنَا

We destroyed

tabbarnā

تَتْبِيرًۭا

(with) destruction

tatbīran

٣٩

And for each We presented examples [as warnings], and each We destroyed with [total] destruction.

— Saheeh International

وَلَقَدْ

And verily

walaqad

أَتَوْا۟

they have come

ataw

عَلَى

upon

ʿalā

ٱلْقَرْيَةِ

the town

l-qaryati

ٱلَّتِىٓ

which

allatī

أُمْطِرَتْ

was showered

um'ṭirat

مَطَرَ

(with) a rain

maṭara

ٱلسَّوْءِ ۚ

(of) evil

l-sawi

أَفَلَمْ

Then do not

afalam

يَكُونُوا۟

they [were]

yakūnū

يَرَوْنَهَا ۚ

see it

yarawnahā

بَلْ

Nay

bal

كَانُوا۟

they are

kānū

لَا

not

يَرْجُونَ

expecting

yarjūna

نُشُورًۭا

Resurrection

nushūran

٤٠

And they have already come upon the town which was showered with a rain of evil [i.e., stones]. So have they not seen it? But they are not expecting resurrection.1

— Saheeh International

وَإِذَا

And when

wa-idhā

رَأَوْكَ

they see you

ra-awka

إِن

not

in

يَتَّخِذُونَكَ

they take you

yattakhidhūnaka

إِلَّا

except

illā

هُزُوًا

(in) mockery

huzuwan

أَهَـٰذَا

Is this

ahādhā

ٱلَّذِى

the one whom

alladhī

بَعَثَ

Allah has sent

baʿatha

ٱللَّهُ

Allah has sent

l-lahu

رَسُولًا

(as) a Messenger

rasūlan

٤١

And when they see you, [O Muḥammad], they take you not except in ridicule, [saying], "Is this the one whom Allāh has sent as a messenger?

— Saheeh International

إِن

He would have almost

in

كَادَ

He would have almost

kāda

لَيُضِلُّنَا

[surely] misled us

layuḍillunā

عَنْ

from

ʿan

ءَالِهَتِنَا

our gods

ālihatinā

لَوْلَآ

if not

lawlā

أَن

that

an

صَبَرْنَا

we had been steadfast

ṣabarnā

عَلَيْهَا ۚ

to them

ʿalayhā

وَسَوْفَ

And soon

wasawfa

يَعْلَمُونَ

will know

yaʿlamūna

حِينَ

when

ḥīna

يَرَوْنَ

they will see

yarawna

ٱلْعَذَابَ

the punishment

l-ʿadhāba

مَنْ

who

man

أَضَلُّ

(is) more astray

aḍallu

سَبِيلًا

(from the) way

sabīlan

٤٢

He almost would have misled us from our gods had we not been steadfast in [worship of] them." But they are going to know, when they see the punishment, who is farthest astray in [his] way.

— Saheeh International

أَرَءَيْتَ

Have you seen

ara-ayta

مَنِ

(one) who

mani

ٱتَّخَذَ

takes

ittakhadha

إِلَـٰهَهُۥ

(as) his god

ilāhahu

هَوَىٰهُ

his own desire

hawāhu

أَفَأَنتَ

Then would you

afa-anta

تَكُونُ

be

takūnu

عَلَيْهِ

over him

ʿalayhi

وَكِيلًا

a guardian

wakīlan

٤٣

Have you seen the one who takes as his god his own desire? Then would you be responsible for him?

— Saheeh International

أَمْ

Or

am

تَحْسَبُ

do you think

taḥsabu

أَنَّ

that

anna

أَكْثَرَهُمْ

most of them

aktharahum

يَسْمَعُونَ

hear

yasmaʿūna

أَوْ

or

aw

يَعْقِلُونَ ۚ

understand

yaʿqilūna

إِنْ

Not

in

هُمْ

they

hum

إِلَّا

(are) except

illā

كَٱلْأَنْعَـٰمِ ۖ

like cattle

kal-anʿāmi

بَلْ

Nay

bal

هُمْ

they

hum

أَضَلُّ

(are) more astray

aḍallu

سَبِيلًا

(from the) way

sabīlan

٤٤

Or do you think that most of them hear or reason? They are not except like livestock.1 Rather, they are [even] more astray in [their] way.

— Saheeh International

أَلَمْ

Do you not

alam

تَرَ

see

tara

إِلَىٰ

[to]

ilā

رَبِّكَ

your Lord

rabbika

كَيْفَ

how

kayfa

مَدَّ

He extends

madda

ٱلظِّلَّ

the shadow

l-ẓila

وَلَوْ

And if

walaw

شَآءَ

He willed

shāa

لَجَعَلَهُۥ

surely He (could) have made it

lajaʿalahu

سَاكِنًۭا

stationary

sākinan

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

جَعَلْنَا

We made

jaʿalnā

ٱلشَّمْسَ

the sun

l-shamsa

عَلَيْهِ

for it

ʿalayhi

دَلِيلًۭا

an indication

dalīlan

٤٥

Have you not considered your Lord - how He extends the shadow, and if He willed, He could have made it stationary? Then We made the sun for it an indication.1

— Saheeh International

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

قَبَضْنَـٰهُ

We withdraw it

qabaḍnāhu

إِلَيْنَا

to Us

ilaynā

قَبْضًۭا

a withdrawal

qabḍan

يَسِيرًۭا

gradual

yasīran

٤٦

Then We [retract and] hold it with Us for a brief grasp.1

— Saheeh International

وَهُوَ

And He

wahuwa

ٱلَّذِى

(is) the One Who

alladhī

جَعَلَ

made

jaʿala

لَكُمُ

for you

lakumu

ٱلَّيْلَ

the night

al-layla

لِبَاسًۭا

(as) a covering

libāsan

وَٱلنَّوْمَ

and the sleep

wal-nawma

سُبَاتًۭا

a rest

subātan

وَجَعَلَ

and made

wajaʿala

ٱلنَّهَارَ

the day

l-nahāra

نُشُورًۭا

a resurrection

nushūran

٤٧

And it is He who has made the night for you as clothing1 and sleep [a means for] rest and has made the day a resurrection.2

— Saheeh International

وَهُوَ

And He

wahuwa

ٱلَّذِىٓ

(is) the One Who

alladhī

أَرْسَلَ

sends

arsala

ٱلرِّيَـٰحَ

the winds

l-riyāḥa

بُشْرًۢا

(as) glad tidings

bush'ran

بَيْنَ

before

bayna

يَدَىْ

before

yaday

رَحْمَتِهِۦ ۚ

His Mercy

raḥmatihi

وَأَنزَلْنَا

and We send down

wa-anzalnā

مِنَ

from

mina

ٱلسَّمَآءِ

the sky

l-samāi

مَآءًۭ

water

māan

طَهُورًۭا

pure

ṭahūran

٤٨

And it is He who sends the winds as good tidings before His mercy [i.e., rainfall], and We send down from the sky pure water

— Saheeh International

لِّنُحْـِۧىَ

That We may give life

linuḥ'yiya

بِهِۦ

thereby

bihi

بَلْدَةًۭ

(to) a land

baldatan

مَّيْتًۭا

dead

maytan

وَنُسْقِيَهُۥ

and We give drink

wanus'qiyahu

مِمَّا

thereof

mimmā

خَلَقْنَآ

(to those) We created

khalaqnā

أَنْعَـٰمًۭا

cattle

anʿāman

وَأَنَاسِىَّ

and men

wa-anāsiyya

كَثِيرًۭا

many

kathīran

٤٩

That We may bring to life thereby a dead land and give it as drink to those We created of numerous livestock and men.

— Saheeh International

وَلَقَدْ

And verily

walaqad

صَرَّفْنَـٰهُ

We have distributed it

ṣarrafnāhu

بَيْنَهُمْ

among them

baynahum

لِيَذَّكَّرُوا۟

that they may remember

liyadhakkarū

فَأَبَىٰٓ

but refuse

fa-abā

أَكْثَرُ

most

aktharu

ٱلنَّاسِ

(of) the people

l-nāsi

إِلَّا

except

illā

كُفُورًۭا

disbelief

kufūran

٥٠

And We have certainly distributed it among them that they might be reminded,1 but most of the people refuse except disbelief.

— Saheeh International

وَلَوْ

And if

walaw

شِئْنَا

We willed

shi'nā

لَبَعَثْنَا

surely, We (would) have raised

labaʿathnā

فِى

in

كُلِّ

every

kulli

قَرْيَةٍۢ

town

qaryatin

نَّذِيرًۭا

a warner

nadhīran

٥١

And if We had willed, We could have sent into every city a warner.1

— Saheeh International

فَلَا

So (do) not

falā

تُطِعِ

obey

tuṭiʿi

ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ

the disbelievers

l-kāfirīna

وَجَـٰهِدْهُم

and strive (against) them

wajāhid'hum

بِهِۦ

with it

bihi

جِهَادًۭا

a striving

jihādan

كَبِيرًۭا

great

kabīran

٥٢

So do not obey the disbelievers, and strive against them with it [i.e., the Qur’ān] a great striving.

— Saheeh International

۞ وَهُوَ

And He

wahuwa

ٱلَّذِى

(is) the One Who

alladhī

مَرَجَ

(has) released

maraja

ٱلْبَحْرَيْنِ

the two seas

l-baḥrayni

هَـٰذَا

[this] (one)

hādhā

عَذْبٌۭ

palatable

ʿadhbun

فُرَاتٌۭ

and sweet

furātun

وَهَـٰذَا

and [this] (one)

wahādhā

مِلْحٌ

salty

mil'ḥun

أُجَاجٌۭ

(and) bitter

ujājun

وَجَعَلَ

and He has made

wajaʿala

بَيْنَهُمَا

between them

baynahumā

بَرْزَخًۭا

a barrier

barzakhan

وَحِجْرًۭا

and a partition

waḥij'ran

مَّحْجُورًۭا

forbidden

maḥjūran

٥٣

And it is He who has released [simultaneously] the two seas [i.e., bodies of water], one fresh and sweet and one salty and bitter, and He placed between them a barrier and prohibiting partition.

— Saheeh International

وَهُوَ

And He

wahuwa

ٱلَّذِى

(is) the One Who

alladhī

خَلَقَ

has created

khalaqa

مِنَ

from

mina

ٱلْمَآءِ

the water

l-māi

بَشَرًۭا

human being

basharan

فَجَعَلَهُۥ

and has made (for) him

fajaʿalahu

نَسَبًۭا

blood relationship

nasaban

وَصِهْرًۭا ۗ

and marriage relationship

waṣih'ran

وَكَانَ

And is

wakāna

رَبُّكَ

your Lord

rabbuka

قَدِيرًۭا

All-Powerful

qadīran

٥٤

And it is He who has created from water [i.e., semen] a human being and made him [a relative by] lineage and marriage. And ever is your Lord competent [concerning creation].

— Saheeh International

وَيَعْبُدُونَ

But they worship

wayaʿbudūna

مِن

besides Allah

min

دُونِ

besides Allah

dūni

ٱللَّهِ

besides Allah

l-lahi

مَا

what

لَا

not profits them

يَنفَعُهُمْ

not profits them

yanfaʿuhum

وَلَا

and not

walā

يَضُرُّهُمْ ۗ

harms them

yaḍurruhum

وَكَانَ

and is

wakāna

ٱلْكَافِرُ

the disbeliever

l-kāfiru

عَلَىٰ

against

ʿalā

رَبِّهِۦ

his Lord

rabbihi

ظَهِيرًۭا

a helper

ẓahīran

٥٥

But they worship rather than Allāh that which does not benefit them or harm them, and the disbeliever is ever, against his Lord, an assistant [to Satan].

— Saheeh International

وَمَآ

And not

wamā

أَرْسَلْنَـٰكَ

We sent you

arsalnāka

إِلَّا

except

illā

مُبَشِّرًۭا

(as) a bearer of glad tidings

mubashiran

وَنَذِيرًۭا

and a warner

wanadhīran

٥٦

And We have not sent you, [O Muḥammad], except as a bringer of good tidings and a warner.

— Saheeh International

قُلْ

Say

qul

مَآ

Not

أَسْـَٔلُكُمْ

I ask (of) you

asalukum

عَلَيْهِ

for it

ʿalayhi

مِنْ

any

min

أَجْرٍ

payment

ajrin

إِلَّا

except

illā

مَن

(that) whoever wills

man

شَآءَ

(that) whoever wills

shāa

أَن

to

an

يَتَّخِذَ

take

yattakhidha

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

رَبِّهِۦ

his Lord

rabbihi

سَبِيلًۭا

a way

sabīlan

٥٧

Say, "I do not ask of you for it any payment - only that whoever wills might take to his Lord a way."

— Saheeh International

وَتَوَكَّلْ

And put your trust

watawakkal

عَلَى

in

ʿalā

ٱلْحَىِّ

the Ever-Living

l-ḥayi

ٱلَّذِى

the One Who

alladhī

لَا

does not die

يَمُوتُ

does not die

yamūtu

وَسَبِّحْ

and glorify

wasabbiḥ

بِحَمْدِهِۦ ۚ

with His Praise

biḥamdihi

وَكَفَىٰ

And sufficient is

wakafā

بِهِۦ

He

bihi

بِذُنُوبِ

regarding the sins

bidhunūbi

عِبَادِهِۦ

(of) His slaves

ʿibādihi

خَبِيرًا

All-Aware

khabīran

٥٨

And rely upon the Ever-Living who does not die, and exalt [Allāh] with His praise. And sufficient is He to be, with the sins of His servants, [fully] Aware -

— Saheeh International

ٱلَّذِى

The One Who

alladhī

خَلَقَ

created

khalaqa

ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ

the heavens

l-samāwāti

وَٱلْأَرْضَ

and the earth

wal-arḍa

وَمَا

and whatever

wamā

بَيْنَهُمَا

(is) between them

baynahumā

فِى

in

سِتَّةِ

six

sittati

أَيَّامٍۢ

periods

ayyāmin

ثُمَّ

then

thumma

ٱسْتَوَىٰ

He established Himself

is'tawā

عَلَى

over

ʿalā

ٱلْعَرْشِ ۚ

the Throne

l-ʿarshi

ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُ

the Most Gracious

l-raḥmānu

فَسْـَٔلْ

so ask

fasal

بِهِۦ

Him

bihi

خَبِيرًۭا

(as He is) All-Aware

khabīran

٥٩

He who created the heavens and the earth and what is between them in six days and then established Himself above the Throne1 - the Most Merciful, so ask about Him one well informed [i.e., the Prophet (ﷺ)].

— Saheeh International

وَإِذَا

And when

wa-idhā

قِيلَ

it is said

qīla

لَهُمُ

to them

lahumu

ٱسْجُدُوا۟

Prostrate

us'judū

لِلرَّحْمَـٰنِ

to the Most Gracious

lilrraḥmāni

قَالُوا۟

They say

qālū

وَمَا

And what

wamā

ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُ

(is) the Most Gracious

l-raḥmānu

أَنَسْجُدُ

Should we prostrate

anasjudu

لِمَا

to what

limā

تَأْمُرُنَا

you order us

tamurunā

وَزَادَهُمْ

And it increases them

wazādahum

نُفُورًۭا ۩

(in) aversion

nufūran

٦٠

And when it is said to them, "Prostrate to the Most Merciful," they say, "And what is the Most Merciful? Should we prostrate to that which you order us?" And it increases them in aversion.

— Saheeh International

تَبَارَكَ

Blessed is He

tabāraka

ٱلَّذِى

Who

alladhī

جَعَلَ

has placed

jaʿala

فِى

in

ٱلسَّمَآءِ

the skies

بُرُوجًۭا

constellations

burūjan

وَجَعَلَ

and has placed

wajaʿala

فِيهَا

therein

fīhā

سِرَٰجًۭا

a lamp

sirājan

وَقَمَرًۭا

and a moon

waqamaran

مُّنِيرًۭا

shining

munīran

٦١

Blessed is He who has placed in the sky great stars and placed therein a [burning] lamp and luminous moon.

— Saheeh International

وَهُوَ

And He

wahuwa

ٱلَّذِى

(is) the One Who

alladhī

جَعَلَ

made

jaʿala

ٱلَّيْلَ

the night

al-layla

وَٱلنَّهَارَ

and the day

wal-nahāra

خِلْفَةًۭ

(in) succession

khil'fatan

لِّمَنْ

for whoever

liman

أَرَادَ

desires

arāda

أَن

to

an

يَذَّكَّرَ

remember

yadhakkara

أَوْ

or

aw

أَرَادَ

desires

arāda

شُكُورًۭا

to be thankful

shukūran

٦٢

And it is He who has made the night and the day in succession for whoever desires to remember or desires gratitude.

— Saheeh International

وَعِبَادُ

And (the) slaves

waʿibādu

ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ

(of) the Most Gracious

l-raḥmāni

ٱلَّذِينَ

(are) those who

alladhīna

يَمْشُونَ

walk

yamshūna

عَلَى

on

ʿalā

ٱلْأَرْضِ

the earth

l-arḍi

هَوْنًۭا

(in) humbleness

hawnan

وَإِذَا

and when

wa-idhā

خَاطَبَهُمُ

address them

khāṭabahumu

ٱلْجَـٰهِلُونَ

the ignorant ones

l-jāhilūna

قَالُوا۟

they say

qālū

سَلَـٰمًۭا

Peace

salāman

٦٣

And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth easily,1 and when the ignorant address them [harshly], they say [words of] peace,2

— Saheeh International

وَٱلَّذِينَ

And those who

wa-alladhīna

يَبِيتُونَ

spend (the) night

yabītūna

لِرَبِّهِمْ

before their Lord

lirabbihim

سُجَّدًۭا

prostrating

sujjadan

وَقِيَـٰمًۭا

and standing

waqiyāman

٦٤

And those who spend [part of] the night to their Lord prostrating and standing [in prayer]

— Saheeh International

وَٱلَّذِينَ

And those who

wa-alladhīna

يَقُولُونَ

say

yaqūlūna

رَبَّنَا

Our Lord

rabbanā

ٱصْرِفْ

Avert

iṣ'rif

عَنَّا

from us

ʿannā

عَذَابَ

the punishment

ʿadhāba

جَهَنَّمَ ۖ

(of) Hell

jahannama

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

عَذَابَهَا

its punishment

ʿadhābahā

كَانَ

is

kāna

غَرَامًا

inseparable

gharāman

٦٥

And those who say, "Our Lord, avert from us the punishment of Hell. Indeed, its punishment is ever adhering;

— Saheeh International

إِنَّهَا

Indeed, it

innahā

سَآءَتْ

(is) an evil

sāat

مُسْتَقَرًّۭا

abode

mus'taqarran

وَمُقَامًۭا

and resting place

wamuqāman

٦٦

Indeed, it is evil as a settlement and residence."

— Saheeh International

وَٱلَّذِينَ

And those who

wa-alladhīna

إِذَآ

when

idhā

أَنفَقُوا۟

they spend

anfaqū

لَمْ

(are) not extravagant

lam

يُسْرِفُوا۟

(are) not extravagant

yus'rifū

وَلَمْ

and are not stingy

walam

يَقْتُرُوا۟

and are not stingy

yaqturū

وَكَانَ

but are

wakāna

بَيْنَ

between

bayna

ذَٰلِكَ

that

dhālika

قَوَامًۭا

moderate

qawāman

٦٧

And [they are] those who, when they spend, do so not excessively or sparingly but are ever, between that, [justly] moderate

— Saheeh International

وَٱلَّذِينَ

And those who

wa-alladhīna

لَا

(do) not

يَدْعُونَ

invoke

yadʿūna

مَعَ

with

maʿa

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

إِلَـٰهًا

god

ilāhan

ءَاخَرَ

another

ākhara

وَلَا

and (do) not

walā

يَقْتُلُونَ

[they] kill

yaqtulūna

ٱلنَّفْسَ

the soul

l-nafsa

ٱلَّتِى

which

allatī

حَرَّمَ

Allah has forbidden

ḥarrama

ٱللَّهُ

Allah has forbidden

l-lahu

إِلَّا

except

illā

بِٱلْحَقِّ

by right

bil-ḥaqi

وَلَا

and (do) not

walā

يَزْنُونَ ۚ

commit unlawful sexual intercourse

yaznūna

وَمَن

And whoever

waman

يَفْعَلْ

does

yafʿal

ذَٰلِكَ

that

dhālika

يَلْقَ

will meet

yalqa

أَثَامًۭا

a penalty

athāman

٦٨

And those who do not invoke1 with Allāh another deity or kill the soul which Allāh has forbidden [to be killed], except by right, and do not commit unlawful sexual intercourse. And whoever should do that will meet a penalty.

— Saheeh International

يُضَـٰعَفْ

Will be doubled

yuḍāʿaf

لَهُ

for him

lahu

ٱلْعَذَابُ

the punishment

l-ʿadhābu

يَوْمَ

(on the) Day

yawma

ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ

(of) Resurrection

l-qiyāmati

وَيَخْلُدْ

and he will abide forever

wayakhlud

فِيهِۦ

therein

fīhi

مُهَانًا

humiliated

muhānan

٦٩

Multiplied for him is the punishment on the Day of Resurrection, and he will abide therein humiliated -

— Saheeh International

إِلَّا

Except

illā

مَن

(he) who

man

تَابَ

repents

tāba

وَءَامَنَ

and believes

waāmana

وَعَمِلَ

and does

waʿamila

عَمَلًۭا

righteous deeds

ʿamalan

صَـٰلِحًۭا

righteous deeds

ṣāliḥan

فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

then (for) those

fa-ulāika

يُبَدِّلُ

Allah will replace

yubaddilu

ٱللَّهُ

Allah will replace

l-lahu

سَيِّـَٔاتِهِمْ

their evil deeds

sayyiātihim

حَسَنَـٰتٍۢ ۗ

(with) good ones

ḥasanātin

وَكَانَ

And is

wakāna

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

غَفُورًۭا

Oft-Forgiving

ghafūran

رَّحِيمًۭا

Most Merciful

raḥīman

٧٠

Except for those who repent, believe and do righteous work. For them Allāh will replace their evil deeds with good. And ever is Allāh Forgiving and Merciful.

— Saheeh International

وَمَن

And whoever

waman

تَابَ

repents

tāba

وَعَمِلَ

and does

waʿamila

صَـٰلِحًۭا

righteous (deeds)

ṣāliḥan

فَإِنَّهُۥ

then indeed, he

fa-innahu

يَتُوبُ

turns

yatūbu

إِلَى

to

ilā

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

مَتَابًۭا

(with) repentance

matāban

٧١

And he who repents and does righteousness does indeed turn to Allāh with [accepted] repentance.

— Saheeh International

وَٱلَّذِينَ

And those who

wa-alladhīna

لَا

(do) not

يَشْهَدُونَ

bear witness

yashhadūna

ٱلزُّورَ

(to) the falsehood

l-zūra

وَإِذَا

and when

wa-idhā

مَرُّوا۟

they pass

marrū

بِٱللَّغْوِ

by futility

bil-laghwi

مَرُّوا۟

they pass

marrū

كِرَامًۭا

(as) dignified ones

kirāman

٧٢

And [they are] those who do not testify to falsehood, and when they pass near ill speech, they pass by with dignity.

— Saheeh International

وَٱلَّذِينَ

And those who

wa-alladhīna

إِذَا

when

idhā

ذُكِّرُوا۟

they are reminded

dhukkirū

بِـَٔايَـٰتِ

of (the) Verses

biāyāti

رَبِّهِمْ

(of) their Lord

rabbihim

لَمْ

(do) not

lam

يَخِرُّوا۟

fall

yakhirrū

عَلَيْهَا

upon them

ʿalayhā

صُمًّۭا

deaf

ṣumman

وَعُمْيَانًۭا

and blind

waʿum'yānan

٧٣

And those who, when reminded of the verses of their Lord, do not fall upon them deaf and blind.

— Saheeh International

وَٱلَّذِينَ

And those who

wa-alladhīna

يَقُولُونَ

say

yaqūlūna

رَبَّنَا

Our Lord

rabbanā

هَبْ

Grant

hab

لَنَا

to us

lanā

مِنْ

from

min

أَزْوَٰجِنَا

our spouses

azwājinā

وَذُرِّيَّـٰتِنَا

and our offspring

wadhurriyyātinā

قُرَّةَ

comfort

qurrata

أَعْيُنٍۢ

(to) our eyes

aʿyunin

وَٱجْعَلْنَا

and make us

wa-ij'ʿalnā

لِلْمُتَّقِينَ

for the righteous

lil'muttaqīna

إِمَامًا

a leader

imāman

٧٤

And those who say, "Our Lord, grant us from among our wives and offspring comfort to our eyes1 and make us a leader [i.e., example] for the righteous."

— Saheeh International

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

Those

ulāika

يُجْزَوْنَ

will be awarded

yuj'zawna

ٱلْغُرْفَةَ

the Chamber

l-ghur'fata

بِمَا

because

bimā

صَبَرُوا۟

they were patient

ṣabarū

وَيُلَقَّوْنَ

and they will be met

wayulaqqawna

فِيهَا

therein

fīhā

تَحِيَّةًۭ

(with) greetings

taḥiyyatan

وَسَلَـٰمًا

and peace

wasalāman

٧٥

Those will be awarded the Chamber1 for what they patiently endured, and they will be received therein with greetings and [words of] peace,

— Saheeh International

خَـٰلِدِينَ

Will abide forever

khālidīna

فِيهَا ۚ

in it

fīhā

حَسُنَتْ

Good

ḥasunat

مُسْتَقَرًّۭا

(is) the settlement

mus'taqarran

وَمُقَامًۭا

and a resting place

wamuqāman

٧٦

Abiding eternally therein. Good is the settlement and residence.

— Saheeh International

قُلْ

Say

qul

مَا

Not

يَعْبَؤُا۟

will care

yaʿba-u

بِكُمْ

for you

bikum

رَبِّى

my Lord

rabbī

لَوْلَا

if not

lawlā

دُعَآؤُكُمْ ۖ

your prayer (is to Him)

duʿāukum

فَقَدْ

But verily

faqad

كَذَّبْتُمْ

you have denied

kadhabtum

فَسَوْفَ

so soon

fasawfa

يَكُونُ

will be

yakūnu

لِزَامًۢا

the inevitable (punishment)

lizāman

٧٧

Say, "What would my Lord care for you if not for your supplication?"1 For you [disbelievers] have denied, so it [i.e., your denial] is going to be adherent.2

— Saheeh International
