۞ وَمَآ And what wamā made you hasten aʿjalaka from ʿan your people qawmika O Musa yāmūsā
[Allāh said], "And what made you hasten from your people, O Moses?"
قَالَ He said qāla They hum (are) close ulāi upon ʿalā my tracks atharī and I hastened waʿajil'tu to you ilayka my Lord rabbi that You be pleased litarḍā
He said, "They are close upon my tracks, and I hastened to You, my Lord, that You be pleased."
قَالَ He said qāla But indeed, We fa-innā [verily] qad We (have) tried fatannā your people qawmaka after you min after you baʿdika and has led them astray wa-aḍallahumu the Samiri l-sāmiriyu
[Allāh] said, "But indeed, We have tried your people after you [departed], and the Sāmirī has led them astray."
فَرَجَعَ Then Musa returned farajaʿa Then Musa returned mūsā to ilā his people qawmihi angry ghaḍbāna (and) sorrowful asifan He said qāla O my people yāqawmi Did not alam promise you yaʿid'kum your Lord rabbukum a promise waʿdan good ḥasanan Then, did seem long afaṭāla to you ʿalaykumu the promise l-ʿahdu or am did you desire aradttum that an descend yaḥilla upon you ʿalaykum (the) Anger ghaḍabun of min your Lord rabbikum so you broke fa-akhlaftum (the) promise to me mawʿidī
So Moses returned to his people, angry and grieved. He said, "O my people, did your Lord not make you a good promise? Then, was the time [of its fulfillment] too long for you, or did you wish that wrath from your Lord descend upon you, so you broke your promise [of obedience] to me?"
قَالُوا۟ They said qālū Not mā we broke akhlafnā promise to you mawʿidaka by our will bimalkinā but we walākinnā [we] were made to carry ḥummil'nā burdens awzāran from min ornaments zīnati (of) the people l-qawmi so we threw them faqadhafnāhā and thus fakadhālika threw alqā the Samiri l-sāmiriyu
They said, "We did not break our promise to you by our will, but we were made to carry burdens from the ornaments of the people [of Pharaoh], so we threw them [into the fire], and thus did the Sāmirī throw."
فَأَخْرَجَ Then he brought forth fa-akhraja for them lahum a calf's ʿij'lan body jasadan it had lahu a lowing sound khuwārun and they said faqālū This hādhā (is) your god ilāhukum and the god wa-ilāhu (of) Musa mūsā but he forgot fanasiya
And he extracted for them [the statue of] a calf which had a lowing sound, and they said, "This is your god and the god of Moses, but he forgot."
أَفَلَا Then, did not afalā they see yarawna that not allā it (could) return yarjiʿu to them ilayhim a word qawlan and not walā possess yamliku for them lahum any harm ḍarran and not walā any benefit nafʿan
Did they not see that it could not return to them any speech [i.e., response] and that it did not possess for them any harm or benefit?
