قَالُوا۟ They said qālū O Musa yāmūsā Either immā [that] an you throw tul'qiya or wa-immā [that] an we will be nakūna the first awwala who man throws alqā
They said, "O Moses, either you throw or we will be the first to throw."
قَالَ He said qāla Nay bal you throw alqū Then behold fa-idhā Their ropes ḥibāluhum and their staffs waʿiṣiyyuhum seemed yukhayyalu to him ilayhi by min their magic siḥ'rihim that they annahā (were) moving tasʿā
He said, "Rather, you throw." And suddenly their ropes and staffs seemed to him from their magic that they were moving [like snakes].
فَأَوْجَسَ So sensed fa-awjasa in fī himself nafsihi a fear khīfatan Musa mūsā
And he sensed within himself apprehension, did Moses.
قُلْنَا We said qul'nā (Do) not lā fear takhaf Indeed, you innaka you anta (will be) superior l-aʿlā
We [i.e., Allāh] said, "Fear not. Indeed, it is you who are superior.
وَأَلْقِ And throw wa-alqi what mā (is) in fī your right hand yamīnika it will swallow up talqaf what mā they have made ṣanaʿū Only innamā they (have) made ṣanaʿū a trick kaydu (of) a magician sāḥirin and not walā will be successful yuf'liḥu the magician l-sāḥiru wherever ḥaythu he comes atā
And throw what is in your right hand; it will swallow up what they have crafted. What they have crafted is but the trick of a magician, and the magician will not succeed wherever he is."
فَأُلْقِىَ So were thrown down fa-ul'qiya the magicians l-saḥaratu prostrating sujjadan They said qālū We believe āmannā in (the) Lord birabbi (of) Harun hārūna and Musa wamūsā
So the magicians fell down in prostration. They said, "We have believed in the Lord of Aaron and Moses."
