ٱلطَّلَـٰقُ

The divorce

al-ṭalāqu

مَرَّتَانِ ۖ

(is) twice

marratāni

فَإِمْسَاكٌۢ

Then to retain

fa-im'sākun

بِمَعْرُوفٍ

in a reasonable manner

bimaʿrūfin

أَوْ

or

aw

تَسْرِيحٌۢ

to release (her)

tasrīḥun

بِإِحْسَـٰنٍۢ ۗ

with kindness

bi-iḥ'sānin

وَلَا

And (it is) not

walā

يَحِلُّ

lawful

yaḥillu

لَكُمْ

for you

lakum

أَن

that

an

تَأْخُذُوا۟

you take (back)

takhudhū

مِمَّآ

whatever

mimmā

ءَاتَيْتُمُوهُنَّ

you have given them

ātaytumūhunna

شَيْـًٔا

anything

shayan

إِلَّآ

except

illā

أَن

if

an

يَخَافَآ

both fear

yakhāfā

أَلَّا

that not

allā

يُقِيمَا

they both (can) keep

yuqīmā

حُدُودَ

(the) limits

ḥudūda

ٱللَّهِ ۖ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

فَإِنْ

But if

fa-in

خِفْتُمْ

you fear

khif'tum

أَلَّا

that not

allā

يُقِيمَا

they both (can) keep

yuqīmā

حُدُودَ

(the) limits

ḥudūda

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

فَلَا

then (there is) no

falā

جُنَاحَ

sin

junāḥa

عَلَيْهِمَا

on both of them

ʿalayhimā

فِيمَا

in what

fīmā

ٱفْتَدَتْ

she ransoms

if'tadat

بِهِۦ ۗ

concerning it

bihi

تِلْكَ

These

til'ka

حُدُودُ

(are the) limits

ḥudūdu

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

فَلَا

so (do) not

falā

تَعْتَدُوهَا ۚ

transgress them

taʿtadūhā

وَمَن

And whoever

waman

يَتَعَدَّ

transgresses

yataʿadda

حُدُودَ

(the) limits

ḥudūda

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

then those

fa-ulāika

هُمُ

they

humu

ٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَ

(are) the wrongdoers

l-ẓālimūna

٢٢٩

Divorce is twice. Then [after that], either keep [her] in an acceptable manner or release [her] with good treatment. And it is not lawful for you to take anything of what you have given them unless both fear that they will not be able to keep [within] the limits of Allāh.1 But if you fear that they will not keep [within] the limits of Allāh, then there is no blame upon either of them concerning that by which she ransoms herself. These are the limits of Allāh, so do not transgress them. And whoever transgresses the limits of Allāh - it is those who are the wrongdoers [i.e., the unjust].
