البقرة
ذَٰلِكَ That dhālika (is) the book l-kitābu no lā doubt rayba in it fīhi a Guidance hudan for the God-conscious lil'muttaqīna
This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allāh1 -
ٱلَّذِينَ Those who alladhīna believe yu'minūna in the unseen bil-ghaybi and establish wayuqīmūna the prayer l-ṣalata and out of what wamimmā We have provided them razaqnāhum they spend yunfiqūna
Who believe in the unseen, establish prayer,1 and spend out of what We2 have provided for them,
وَٱلَّذِينَ And those who wa-alladhīna believe yu'minūna in what bimā (is) sent down unzila to you ilayka and what wamā was sent down unzila from min before you qablika and in the Hereafter wabil-ākhirati they hum firmly believe yūqinūna
And who believe in what has been revealed to you, [O Muḥammad], and what was revealed before you, and of the Hereafter they are certain [in faith].
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ Those ulāika (are) on ʿalā Guidance hudan from min their Lord rabbihim and those wa-ulāika they humu (are) the successful ones l-muf'liḥūna
Those are upon [right] guidance from their Lord, and it is those who are the successful.
إِنَّ Indeed inna those who alladhīna disbelieve[d] kafarū (it) is same sawāon to them ʿalayhim whether you warn them a-andhartahum or am not lam you warn them tundhir'hum not lā they believe yu'minūna
Indeed, those who disbelieve1 - it is all the same for them whether you warn them or do not warn them - they will not believe.
خَتَمَ Has set a seal khatama Allah l-lahu on ʿalā their hearts qulūbihim and on waʿalā their hearing samʿihim and on waʿalā their vision abṣārihim (is) a veil ghishāwatun And for them walahum (is) a punishment ʿadhābun great ʿaẓīmun
Allāh has set a seal upon their hearts and upon their hearing, and over their vision is a veil.1 And for them is a great punishment.
وَمِنَ And of wamina the people l-nāsi (are some) who man say yaqūlu We believed āmannā in Allah bil-lahi and in the Day wabil-yawmi [the] Last l-ākhiri but not wamā they hum (are) believers (at all) bimu'minīna
And of the people are some who say, "We believe in Allāh and the Last Day," but they are not believers.
يُخَـٰدِعُونَ They seek to deceive yukhādiʿūna Allah l-laha and those who wa-alladhīna believe[d] āmanū and not wamā they deceive yakhdaʿūna except illā themselves anfusahum and not wamā they realize (it) yashʿurūna
They [think to] deceive Allāh and those who believe, but they deceive not except themselves and perceive [it] not.
فِى In fī their hearts qulūbihim (is) a disease maraḍun so has increased them fazādahumu Allah l-lahu (in) disease maraḍan and for them walahum (is) a punishment ʿadhābun painful alīmun because bimā they used to kānū [they] lie yakdhibūna
In their hearts is disease, so Allāh has increased their disease;1 and for them is a painful punishment because they [habitually] used to lie.
وَإِذَا And when wa-idhā it is said qīla to them lahum (Do) not lā spread corruption tuf'sidū in fī the earth l-arḍi they say qālū Only innamā we naḥnu (are) reformers muṣ'liḥūna
And when it is said to them, "Do not cause corruption on the earth," they say, "We are but reformers."
أَلَآ Beware alā indeed they innahum themselves humu (are) the ones who spread corruption l-muf'sidūna [and] but walākin not lā they realize (it) yashʿurūna
Unquestionably, it is they who are the corrupters, but they perceive [it] not.
وَإِذَا And when wa-idhā it is said qīla to them lahum Believe āminū as kamā believed āmana the people l-nāsu they say qālū Should we believe anu'minu as kamā believed āmana the fools l-sufahāu Beware alā certainly they innahum themselves humu (are) the fools l-sufahāu [and] but walākin not lā they know yaʿlamūna
And when it is said to them, "Believe as the people have believed," they say, "Should we believe as the foolish have believed?" Unquestionably, it is they who are the foolish, but they know [it] not.
وَإِذَا And when wa-idhā they meet laqū those who alladhīna believe[d] āmanū they say qālū We believe[d] āmannā But when wa-idhā they are alone khalaw with ilā their evil ones shayāṭīnihim they say qālū Indeed, we innā (are) with you maʿakum only innamā we naḥnu (are) mockers mus'tahziūna
And when they meet those who believe, they say, "We believe"; but when they are alone with their evil ones, they say, "Indeed, we are with you; we were only mockers."
ٱللَّهُ Allah al-lahu mocks yastahzi-u at them bihim and prolongs them wayamudduhum in fī their transgression ṭugh'yānihim they wander blindly yaʿmahūna
[But] Allāh mocks them and prolongs them in their transgression [while] they wander blindly.
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ Those ulāika (are) the ones who alladhīna bought ish'tarawū [the] astraying l-ḍalālata for [the] guidance bil-hudā So not famā profited rabiḥat their commerce tijāratuhum and not wamā were they kānū guided-ones muh'tadīna
Those are the ones who have purchased error [in exchange] for guidance, so their transaction has brought no profit, nor were they guided.
مَثَلُهُمْ Their example mathaluhum (is) like (the) example kamathali (of) the one who alladhī kindled is'tawqada a fire nāran then, when falammā it illuminated aḍāat what mā (was) around him ḥawlahu took away dhahaba Allah l-lahu their light binūrihim and left them watarakahum in fī darkness[es] ẓulumātin (so) not lā (do) they see yub'ṣirūna
Their example is that of one who kindled a fire, but when it illuminated what was around him, Allāh took away their light and left them in darkness [so] they could not see.
صُمٌّۢ Deaf ṣummun dumb buk'mun blind ʿum'yun so they fahum not lā [they] will not return yarjiʿūna
Deaf, dumb and blind - so they will not return [to the right path].
أَوْ Or aw like a rainstorm kaṣayyibin from mina the sky l-samāi in it (are) fīhi darkness[es] ẓulumātun and thunder waraʿdun and lightning wabarqun They put yajʿalūna their fingers aṣābiʿahum in fī their ears ādhānihim from mina the thunderclaps l-ṣawāʿiqi (in) fear (of) ḥadhara [the] death l-mawti And Allah wal-lahu (is) [the One Who] encompasses muḥīṭun the disbelievers bil-kāfirīna
Or [it is] like a rainstorm from the sky within which is darkness, thunder and lightning. They put their fingers in their ears against the thunderclaps in dread of death. But Allāh is encompassing1 of the disbelievers.
يَكَادُ Almost yakādu the lightning l-barqu snatches away yakhṭafu their sight abṣārahum Whenever kullamā it flashes aḍāa for them lahum they walk mashaw in it fīhi and when wa-idhā it darkens aẓlama on them ʿalayhim they stand (still) qāmū And if walaw had willed shāa Allah l-lahu He would certainly have taken away ladhahaba their hearing bisamʿihim and their sight wa-abṣārihim Indeed inna Allah l-laha (is) on ʿalā every kulli thing shayin All-Powerful qadīrun
The lightning almost snatches away their sight. Every time it lights [the way] for them, they walk therein; but when darkness comes over them, they stand [still]. And if Allāh had willed, He could have taken away their hearing and their sight. Indeed, Allāh is over all things competent.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O yāayyuhā mankind l-nāsu worship uʿ'budū your Lord rabbakumu the One Who alladhī created you khalaqakum and those wa-alladhīna from min before you qablikum so that you may laʿallakum become righteous tattaqūna
O mankind, worship your Lord, who created you and those before you, that you may become righteous -
ٱلَّذِى The One Who alladhī made jaʿala for you lakumu the earth l-arḍa a resting place firāshan and the sky wal-samāa a canopy bināan and sent down wa-anzala from mina the sky l-samāi water māan then brought forth fa-akhraja therewith bihi [of] mina the fruits l-thamarāti (as) provision riz'qan for you lakum So (do) not falā set up tajʿalū to Allah lillahi rivals andādan while you wa-antum [you] know taʿlamūna
[He] who made for you the earth a bed [spread out] and the sky a ceiling and sent down from the sky, rain and brought forth thereby fruits as provision for you. So do not attribute to Allāh equals while you know [that there is nothing similar to Him].
وَإِن And if wa-in you are kuntum in fī doubt raybin about what mimmā We have revealed nazzalnā to ʿalā Our slave ʿabdinā then produce fatū a chapter bisūratin [of] min like it mith'lihi and call wa-id'ʿū your witnesses shuhadāakum from min other than dūni Allah l-lahi if in you are kuntum truthful ṣādiqīna
And if you are in doubt about what We have sent down [i.e., the Qur’ān] upon Our Servant [i.e., Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ)], then produce a sūrah the like thereof and call upon your witnesses [i.e., supporters] other than Allāh, if you should be truthful.
فَإِن But if fa-in not lam you do tafʿalū and never walan will you do tafʿalū then fear fa-ittaqū the Fire l-nāra whose allatī [its] fuel waqūduhā (is) [the] men l-nāsu and [the] stones wal-ḥijāratu prepared uʿiddat for the disbelievers lil'kāfirīna
But if you do not - and you will never be able to - then fear the Fire, whose fuel is people and stones, prepared for the disbelievers.
وَبَشِّرِ And give good news wabashiri (to) those who alladhīna believe āmanū and do waʿamilū [the] righteous deeds l-ṣāliḥāti that anna for them lahum (will be) Gardens jannātin flow tajrī [from] min under them taḥtihā the rivers l-anhāru Every time kullamā they are provided ruziqū therefrom min'hā of min fruit thamaratin (as) provision riz'qan they (will) say qālū This (is) hādhā the one which alladhī we were provided ruziq'nā from min before qablu And they will be given wa-utū therefrom bihi (things) in resemblance mutashābihan And for them walahum therein fīhā spouses azwājun purified muṭahharatun and they wahum therein fīhā (will) abide forever khālidūna
And give good tidings to those who believe and do righteous deeds that they will have gardens [in Paradise] beneath which rivers flow. Whenever they are provided with a provision of fruit therefrom, they will say, "This is what we were provided with before." And it is given to them in likeness. And they will have therein purified spouses, and they will abide therein eternally.
۞ إِنَّ Indeed inna Allah l-laha (is) not lā ashamed yastaḥyī to an set forth yaḍriba an example mathalan (like) even mā (of) a mosquito baʿūḍatan and (even) something famā above it fawqahā Then as for fa-ammā those who alladhīna believed āmanū [thus] they will know fayaʿlamūna that it annahu (is) the truth l-ḥaqu from min their Lord rabbihim And as for wa-ammā those who alladhīna disbelieved kafarū [thus] they will say fayaqūlūna what mādhā (did) intend arāda Allah l-lahu by this bihādhā example mathalan He lets go astray yuḍillu by it bihi many kathīran and He guides wayahdī by it bihi many kathīran And not wamā He lets go astray yuḍillu by it bihi except illā the defiantly disobedient l-fāsiqīna
Indeed, Allāh is not timid to present an example - that of a mosquito or what is smaller1 than it. And those who have believed know that it is the truth from their Lord. But as for those who disbelieve, they say, "What did Allāh intend by this as an example?" He misleads many thereby and guides many thereby. And He misleads not except the defiantly disobedient,
ٱلَّذِينَ Those who alladhīna break yanquḍūna (the) Covenant ʿahda (of) Allah l-lahi from min after baʿdi its ratification mīthāqihi and [they] cut wayaqṭaʿūna what mā has ordered amara Allah l-lahu it bihi to an be joined yūṣala and [they] spread corruption wayuf'sidūna in fī the earth l-arḍi Those ulāika they humu (are) the losers l-khāsirūna
Who break the covenant of Allāh after contracting it and sever that which Allāh has ordered to be joined and cause corruption on earth. It is those who are the losers.
كَيْفَ How kayfa (can) you disbelieve takfurūna in Allah bil-lahi While you were wakuntum dead amwātan then He gave you life fa-aḥyākum then thumma He will cause you to die yumītukum then thumma He will give you life yuḥ'yīkum then thumma to Him ilayhi you will be returned tur'jaʿūna
How can you disbelieve in Allāh when you were lifeless and He brought you to life; then He will cause you to die, then He will bring you [back] to life, and then to Him you will be returned.
هُوَ He huwa (is) the One Who alladhī created khalaqa for you lakum what mā (is) in fī the earth l-arḍi all jamīʿan Moreover thumma He turned is'tawā to ilā the heaven l-samāi and fashioned them fasawwāhunna seven sabʿa heavens samāwātin And He wahuwa of every bikulli thing shayin (is) All-Knowing ʿalīmun
It is He who created for you all of that which is on the earth. Then He directed Himself1 to the heaven, [His being above all creation], and made them seven heavens, and He is Knowing of all things.
وَإِذْ And when wa-idh said qāla your Lord rabbuka to the angels lil'malāikati Indeed, I (am) innī going to place jāʿilun in fī the earth l-arḍi a vicegerent khalīfatan they said qālū Will You place atajʿalu in it fīhā (one) who man will spread corruption yuf'sidu in it fīhā and will shed wayasfiku [the] blood[s] l-dimāa while we wanaḥnu [we] glorify (You) nusabbiḥu with Your praises biḥamdika and we sanctify wanuqaddisu [to] You laka He said qāla Indeed, I innī [I] know aʿlamu what mā not lā you know taʿlamūna
And [mention, O Muḥammad], when your Lord said to the angels, "Indeed, I will make upon the earth a successive authority."1 They said, "Will You place upon it one who causes corruption therein and sheds blood, while we exalt You with praise and declare Your perfection?"2 He [Allāh] said, "Indeed, I know that which you do not know."
وَعَلَّمَ And He taught waʿallama Adam ādama the names l-asmāa all of them kullahā Then thumma He displayed them ʿaraḍahum to ʿalā the angels l-malāikati then He said faqāla Inform Me anbiūnī of (the) names bi-asmāi (of) these hāulāi if in you are kuntum truthful ṣādiqīna
And He taught Adam the names - all of them. Then He showed them to the angels and said, "Inform Me of the names of these, if you are truthful."
قَالُوا۟ They said qālū Glory be to You sub'ḥānaka No lā knowledge ʿil'ma (is) for us lanā except illā what mā You have taught us ʿallamtanā Indeed You innaka You anta (are) the All-Knowing l-ʿalīmu the All-Wise l-ḥakīmu
They said, "Exalted are You; we have no knowledge except what You have taught us. Indeed, it is You who is the Knowing,1 the Wise."2
قَالَ He said qāla O Adam yāādamu Inform them anbi'hum of their names bi-asmāihim And when falammā he had informed them anba-ahum of their names bi-asmāihim He said qāla Did not alam I say aqul to you lakum Indeed, I innī [I] know aʿlamu (the) unseen ghayba (of) the heavens l-samāwāti and the earth wal-arḍi and I know wa-aʿlamu what mā you reveal tub'dūna and what wamā you [were] kuntum conceal taktumūna
He said, "O Adam, inform them of their names." And when he had informed them of their names, He said, "Did I not tell you that I know the unseen [aspects] of the heavens and the earth? And I know what you reveal and what you have concealed."
وَإِذْ And when wa-idh We said qul'nā to the angels lil'malāikati Prostrate us'judū to Adam liādama [so] they prostrated fasajadū except illā Iblis ib'līsa He refused abā and was arrogant wa-is'takbara and became wakāna of mina the disbelievers l-kāfirīna
And [mention] when We said to the angels, "Prostrate before Adam"; so they prostrated, except for Iblees.1 He refused and was arrogant and became of the disbelievers.
وَقُلْنَا And We said waqul'nā O Adam yāādamu Dwell us'kun you anta and your spouse wazawjuka (in) Paradise l-janata and [you both] eat wakulā from it min'hā freely raghadan (from) wherever ḥaythu you [both] wish shi'tumā But do not walā [you two] approach taqrabā this hādhihi [the] tree l-shajarata lest you [both] be fatakūnā of mina the wrongdoers l-ẓālimīna
And We said, "O Adam, dwell, you and your wife, in Paradise and eat therefrom in [ease and] abundance from wherever you will. But do not approach this tree, lest you be among the wrongdoers."
فَأَزَلَّهُمَا Then made [both of] them slip fa-azallahumā the Shaitaan l-shayṭānu from it ʿanhā and he got [both of] them out fa-akhrajahumā from what mimmā they [both] were kānā in [it] fīhi And We said waqul'nā Go down (all of you) ih'biṭū some of you baʿḍukum to others libaʿḍin (as) enemy ʿaduwwun and for you walakum in fī the earth l-arḍi (is) a dwelling place mus'taqarrun and a provision wamatāʿun for ilā a period ḥīnin
But Satan caused them to slip out of it and removed them from that [condition] in which they had been. And We said, "Go down, [all of you], as enemies to one another, and you will have upon the earth a place of settlement and provision for a time."
فَتَلَقَّىٰٓ Then received fatalaqqā Adam ādamu from min his Lord rabbihi words kalimātin So (his Lord) turned fatāba towards him ʿalayhi Indeed He innahu He huwa (is) the Oft-returning (to mercy) l-tawābu the Most Merciful l-raḥīmu
Then Adam received from his Lord [some] words,1 and He accepted his repentance. Indeed, it is He who is the Accepting of Repentance,2 the Merciful.
قُلْنَا We said qul'nā Go down ih'biṭū from it min'hā all (of you) jamīʿan and when fa-immā comes to you yatiyannakum from Me minnī Guidance hudan then whoever faman follows tabiʿa My Guidance hudāya [then] no falā fear khawfun (will be) on them ʿalayhim and not walā they hum will grieve yaḥzanūna
We said, "Go down from it, all of you. And when guidance comes to you from Me, whoever follows My guidance - there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.
وَٱلَّذِينَ And those wa-alladhīna who disbelieve[d] kafarū and deny wakadhabū Our Signs biāyātinā those ulāika (are the) companions aṣḥābu (of) the Fire l-nāri they hum in it fīhā (will) abide forever khālidūna
And those who disbelieve and deny Our signs - those will be companions of the Fire; they will abide therein eternally."
يَـٰبَنِىٓ O Children yābanī (of) Israel is'rāīla Remember udh'kurū My Favor niʿ'matiya which allatī I bestowed anʿamtu upon you ʿalaykum and fulfill wa-awfū My Covenant biʿahdī I will fulfill ūfi your covenant biʿahdikum and Me Alone wa-iyyāya fear [Me] fa-ir'habūni
O Children of Israel, remember My favor which I have bestowed upon you and fulfill My covenant [upon you] that I will fulfill your covenant [from Me], and be afraid of [only] Me.
وَءَامِنُوا۟ And believe waāminū in what bimā I have sent down anzaltu confirming muṣaddiqan that which limā (is) with you maʿakum and (do) not walā be takūnū (the) first awwala disbeliever kāfirin of it bihi And (do) not walā exchange tashtarū My Signs (for) biāyātī a price thamanan small qalīlan and Me Alone wa-iyyāya fear [Me] fa-ittaqūni
And believe in what I have sent down confirming that which is [already] with you, and be not the first to disbelieve in it. And do not exchange My signs for a small price, and fear [only] Me.
وَلَا And (do) not walā mix talbisū the Truth l-ḥaqa with [the] falsehood bil-bāṭili and conceal wataktumū the Truth l-ḥaqa while you wa-antum [you] know taʿlamūna
And do not mix the truth with falsehood or conceal the truth while you know [it].
وَأَقِيمُوا۟ And establish wa-aqīmū the prayer l-ṣalata and give waātū zakah l-zakata and bow down wa-ir'kaʿū with maʿa those who bow down l-rākiʿīna
And establish prayer and give zakāh1 and bow with those who bow [in worship and obedience].
۞ أَتَأْمُرُونَ Do you order atamurūna [the] people l-nāsa [the] righteousness bil-biri and you forget watansawna yourselves anfusakum while you wa-antum [you] recite tatlūna the Book l-kitāba Then, will not afalā you use reason taʿqilūna
Do you order righteousness of the people and forget1 yourselves while you recite the Scripture? Then will you not reason?
وَٱسْتَعِينُوا۟ And seek help wa-is'taʿīnū through patience bil-ṣabri and the prayer wal-ṣalati and indeed, it wa-innahā (is) surely difficult lakabīratun except illā on ʿalā the humble ones l-khāshiʿīna
And seek help through patience and prayer; and indeed, it is difficult except for the humbly submissive [to Allāh]
ٱلَّذِينَ Those who alladhīna believe yaẓunnūna that they annahum will meet mulāqū their Lord rabbihim and that they wa-annahum to Him ilayhi will return rājiʿūna
Who are certain that they will meet their Lord and that they will return to Him.
يَـٰبَنِىٓ O Children yābanī (of) Israel is'rāīla Remember udh'kurū My Favor niʿ'matiya which allatī I bestowed anʿamtu upon you ʿalaykum and that I wa-annī [I] preferred you faḍḍaltukum over ʿalā the worlds l-ʿālamīna
O Children of Israel, remember My favor that I have bestowed upon you and that I preferred you over the worlds [i.e., peoples].
وَٱتَّقُوا۟ And fear wa-ittaqū a day yawman (will) not lā avail tajzī any soul nafsun for ʿan (another) soul nafsin anything shayan and not walā will be accepted yuq'balu from it min'hā any intercession shafāʿatun and not walā will be taken yu'khadhu from it min'hā a compensation ʿadlun and not walā they hum will be helped yunṣarūna
And fear a Day when no soul will suffice for another soul1 at all, nor will intercession be accepted from it, nor will compensation be taken from it, nor will they be aided.
وَإِذْ And when wa-idh We saved you najjaynākum from min (the) people āli (of) Firaun fir'ʿawna (who were) afflicting you (with) yasūmūnakum horrible sūa torment l-ʿadhābi slaughtering yudhabbiḥūna your sons abnāakum and letting live wayastaḥyūna your women nisāakum And in wafī that dhālikum (was) a trial balāon from min your Lord rabbikum great ʿaẓīmun
And [recall] when We saved you [i.e., your forefathers] from the people of Pharaoh, who afflicted you with the worst torment, slaughtering your [newborn] sons and keeping your females alive. And in that was a great trial from your Lord.
وَإِذْ And when wa-idh We parted faraqnā for you bikumu the sea l-baḥra then We saved you fa-anjaynākum and We drowned wa-aghraqnā (the) people āla (of) Firaun fir'ʿawna while you wa-antum (were) looking tanẓurūna
And [recall] when We parted the sea for you and saved you and drowned the people of Pharaoh while you were looking on.
وَإِذْ And when wa-idh We appointed wāʿadnā (for) Musa mūsā forty arbaʿīna nights laylatan Then thumma you took ittakhadhtumu the calf l-ʿij'la from min after him baʿdihi and you wa-antum (were) wrongdoers ẓālimūna
And [recall] when We made an appointment with Moses for forty nights. Then you took [for worship] the calf after him [i.e., his departure], while you were wrongdoers.
ثُمَّ Then thumma We forgave ʿafawnā you ʿankum from min after baʿdi that dhālika so that you may laʿallakum (be) grateful tashkurūna
Then We forgave you after that so perhaps you would be grateful.
وَإِذْ And when wa-idh We gave ātaynā Musa mūsā the Book l-kitāba and the Criterion wal-fur'qāna perhaps you laʿallakum (would be) guided tahtadūna
And [recall] when We gave Moses the Scripture and criterion1 that perhaps you would be guided.
وَإِذْ And when wa-idh said qāla Musa mūsā to his people liqawmihi O my people yāqawmi Indeed, you innakum [you] have wronged ẓalamtum yourselves anfusakum by your taking bi-ittikhādhikumu the calf l-ʿij'la So turn in repentance fatūbū to ilā your Creator bāri-ikum and kill fa-uq'tulū yourselves anfusakum That dhālikum (is) better khayrun for you lakum with ʿinda your Creator bāri-ikum Then He turned fatāba towards you ʿalaykum Indeed He innahu He huwa (is) the-returning l-tawābu the Most Merciful l-raḥīmu
And [recall] when Moses said to his people, "O my people, indeed you have wronged yourselves by your taking of the calf [for worship]. So repent to your Creator and kill yourselves [i.e., the guilty among you]. That is best for [all of] you in the sight of your Creator." Then He accepted your repentance; indeed, He is the Accepting of Repentance, the Merciful.
وَإِذْ And when wa-idh you said qul'tum O Musa yāmūsā Never lan (will) we believe nu'mina in you laka until ḥattā we see narā Allah l-laha manifestly jahratan So seized you fa-akhadhatkumu the thunderbolt l-ṣāʿiqatu while you wa-antum (were) looking tanẓurūna
And [recall] when you said, "O Moses, we will never believe you until we see Allāh outright"; so the thunderbolt took you while you were looking on.
ثُمَّ Then thumma We revived you baʿathnākum from min after baʿdi your death mawtikum so that you may laʿallakum (be) grateful tashkurūna
Then We revived you after your death that perhaps you would be grateful.
وَظَلَّلْنَا And We shaded waẓallalnā [over] you ʿalaykumu (with) [the] clouds l-ghamāma and We sent down wa-anzalnā to you ʿalaykumu [the] manna l-mana and [the] quails wal-salwā Eat kulū from min (the) good things ṭayyibāti that mā We have provided you razaqnākum And not wamā they wronged Us ẓalamūnā but walākin they were kānū (to) themselves anfusahum doing wrong yaẓlimūna
And We shaded you with clouds and sent down to you manna and quails, [saying], "Eat from the good things with which We have provided you." And they wronged Us not - but they were [only] wronging themselves.
وَإِذْ And when wa-idh We said qul'nā Enter ud'khulū this hādhihi town l-qaryata then eat fakulū from min'hā wherever ḥaythu you wish[ed] shi'tum abundantly raghadan and enter wa-ud'khulū the gate l-bāba prostrating sujjadan And say waqūlū Repentance ḥiṭṭatun We will forgive naghfir for you lakum your sins khaṭāyākum And We will increase wasanazīdu the good-doers (in reward) l-muḥ'sinīna
And [recall] when We said, "Enter this city [i.e., Jerusalem] and eat from it wherever you will in [ease and] abundance, and enter the gate bowing humbly1 and say, 'Relieve us of our burdens [i.e., sins].' We will [then] forgive your sins for you, and We will increase the doers of good [in goodness and reward]."
فَبَدَّلَ But changed fabaddala those who alladhīna wronged ẓalamū (the) word qawlan other (than) ghayra (that) which alladhī was said qīla to them lahum so We sent down fa-anzalnā upon ʿalā those who alladhīna wronged ẓalamū a punishment rij'zan from mina the sky l-samāi because bimā they were kānū defiantly disobeying yafsuqūna
But those who wronged changed [those words] to a statement other than that which had been said to them, so We sent down upon those who wronged a punishment [i.e., plague] from the sky because they were defiantly disobeying.
۞ وَإِذِ And when wa-idhi asked (for) water is'tasqā Musa mūsā for his people liqawmihi [so] We said faqul'nā Strike iḍ'rib with your staff biʿaṣāka the stone l-ḥajara Then gushed forth fa-infajarat from it min'hu (of) ith'natā twelve ʿashrata springs ʿaynan Indeed qad knew ʿalima all kullu (the) people unāsin their drinking place mashrabahum Eat kulū and drink wa-ish'rabū from min (the) provision (of) riz'qi Allah l-lahi and (do) not walā act wickedly taʿthaw in fī the earth l-arḍi spreading corruption muf'sidīna
And [recall] when Moses prayed for water for his people, so We said, "Strike with your staff the stone." And there gushed forth from it twelve springs, and every people [i.e., tribe] knew its watering place. "Eat and drink from the provision of Allāh, and do not commit abuse on the earth, spreading corruption."
وَإِذْ And when wa-idh you said qul'tum O Musa yāmūsā Never (will) lan we endure naṣbira [on] ʿalā food ṭaʿāmin (of) one (kind) wāḥidin so pray fa-ud'ʿu for us lanā (to) your Lord rabbaka to bring forth yukh'rij for us lanā out of what mimmā grows tunbitu the earth l-arḍu of min its herbs baqlihā [and] its cucumbers waqithāihā [and] its garlic wafūmihā [and] its lentils waʿadasihā and its onions wabaṣalihā He said qāla Would you exchange atastabdilūna that which alladhī [it] huwa (is) inferior adnā for that which bi-alladhī [it] huwa (is) better khayrun Go down ih'biṭū (to) a city miṣ'ran so indeed fa-inna for you lakum (is) what mā you have asked (for) sa-altum And were struck waḍuribat on them ʿalayhimu the humiliation l-dhilatu and the misery wal-maskanatu and they drew on themselves wabāū wrath bighaḍabin of mina Allah l-lahi That (was) dhālika because they bi-annahum used to kānū disbelieve yakfurūna in (the) Signs biāyāti (of) Allah l-lahi and kill wayaqtulūna the Prophets l-nabiyīna without (any) bighayri [the] right l-ḥaqi That dhālika (was) because bimā they disobeyed ʿaṣaw and they were wakānū transgressing yaʿtadūna
And [recall] when you said, "O Moses, we can never endure one [kind of] food. So call upon your Lord to bring forth for us from the earth its green herbs and its cucumbers and its garlic and its lentils and its onions." [Moses] said, "Would you exchange what is better for what is less? Go into [any] settlement and indeed, you will have what you have asked." And they were covered with humiliation and poverty and returned with anger from Allāh [upon them]. That was because they [repeatedly] disbelieved in the signs of Allāh and killed the prophets without right. That was because they disobeyed and were [habitually] transgressing.
إِنَّ Indeed inna those who alladhīna believed āmanū and those who wa-alladhīna became Jews hādū and the Christians wal-naṣārā and the Sabians wal-ṣābiīna who man believed āmana in Allah bil-lahi and the Day wal-yawmi [the] Last l-ākhiri and did waʿamila righteous deeds ṣāliḥan so for them falahum their reward ajruhum (is) with ʿinda their Lord rabbihim and no walā fear khawfun on them ʿalayhim and not walā they hum will grieve yaḥzanūna
Indeed, those who believed and those who were Jews or Christians or Sabeans [before Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ)] - those [among them] who believed in Allāh and the Last Day and did righteousness - will have their reward with their Lord, and no fear will there be concerning them, nor will they grieve1.
وَإِذْ And when wa-idh We took akhadhnā your covenant mīthāqakum and We raised warafaʿnā over you fawqakumu the mount l-ṭūra Hold khudhū what mā We have given you ātaynākum with strength biquwwatin and remember wa-udh'kurū what mā (is) in it fīhi perhaps you laʿallakum (would become) righteous tattaqūna
And [recall] when We took your covenant, [O Children of Israel, to abide by the Torah] and We raised over you the mount, [saying], "Take what We have given you with determination and remember what is in it that perhaps you may become righteous."
ثُمَّ Then thumma you turned away tawallaytum from min after baʿdi that dhālika So if not falawlā (for the) Grace faḍlu (of) Allah l-lahi upon you ʿalaykum and His Mercy waraḥmatuhu surely you would have been lakuntum of mina the losers l-khāsirīna
Then you turned away after that. And if not for the favor of Allāh upon you and His mercy, you would have been among the losers.
وَلَقَدْ And indeed walaqad you knew ʿalim'tumu those who alladhīna transgressed iʿ'tadaw among you minkum in fī the (matter of) Sabbath l-sabti So We said faqul'nā to them lahum Be kūnū apes qiradatan despised khāsiīna
And you had already known about those who transgressed among you concerning the sabbath, and We said to them, "Be apes, despised."
فَجَعَلْنَـٰهَا So We made it fajaʿalnāhā a deterrent punishment nakālan for those limā (in) front bayna (of) them yadayhā and those wamā after them khalfahā and an admonition wamawʿiẓatan for those who fear (Allah) lil'muttaqīna
And We made it a deterrent punishment for those who were present and those who succeeded [them] and a lesson for those who fear Allāh.
وَإِذْ And when wa-idh said qāla Musa mūsā to his people liqawmihi Indeed inna Allah l-laha commands you yamurukum that an you slaughter tadhbaḥū a cow baqaratan They said qālū Do you take us atattakhidhunā (in) ridicule huzuwan He said qāla I seek refuge aʿūdhu in Allah bil-lahi that an I be akūna among mina the ignorant l-jāhilīna
And [recall] when Moses said to his people, "Indeed, Allāh commands you to slaughter a cow." They said, "Do you take us in ridicule?" He said, "I seek refuge in Allāh from being among the ignorant."
قَالُوا۟ They said qālū Pray ud'ʿu for us lanā (to) your Lord rabbaka to make clear yubayyin to us lanā what mā it (is) hiya He said qāla Indeed, He innahu says yaqūlu [Indeed] it innahā (is) a cow baqaratun not lā old fāriḍun and not walā young bik'run middle aged ʿawānun between bayna that dhālika so do fa-if'ʿalū what mā you are commanded tu'marūna
They said, "Call upon your Lord to make clear to us what it is." [Moses] said, "[Allāh] says, 'It is a cow which is neither old nor virgin, but median between that,' so do what you are commanded."
قَالُوا۟ They said qālū Pray ud'ʿu for us lanā (to) your Lord rabbaka to make clear yubayyin to us lanā what mā (is) its color lawnuhā He said qāla Indeed, He innahu says yaqūlu '[Indeed] it is innahā a cow baqaratun yellow ṣafrāu bright fāqiʿun (in) its color lawnuhā pleasing tasurru (to) those who see (it).' l-nāẓirīna
They said, "Call upon your Lord to show us what is her color." He said, "He says, 'It is a yellow cow, bright in color - pleasing to the observers.'"
قَالُوا۟ They said qālū Pray ud'ʿu for us lanā (to) your Lord rabbaka to make clear yubayyin to us lanā what mā it (is) hiya Indeed inna [the] cows l-baqara look alike tashābaha to us ʿalaynā And indeed we wa-innā if in wills shāa Allah l-lahu (will) surely be those who are guided lamuh'tadūna
They said, "Call upon your Lord to make clear to us what it is. Indeed, [all] cows look alike to us. And indeed we, if Allāh wills, will be guided."
قَالَ He said qāla Indeed, He innahu says yaqūlu [Indeed] it innahā (is) a cow baqaratun not lā trained dhalūlun to plough tuthīru the earth l-arḍa and not walā water tasqī the field l-ḥartha sound musallamatun no lā blemish shiyata in it fīhā They said qālū Now l-āna you have come ji'ta with the truth bil-ḥaqi So they slaughtered it fadhabaḥūhā and not wamā they were near kādū (to) doing (it) yafʿalūna
He said, "He says, 'It is a cow neither trained to plow the earth nor to irrigate the field, one free from fault with no spot upon her.'" They said, "Now you have come with the truth." So they slaughtered her, but they could hardly do it.
وَإِذْ And when wa-idh you killed qataltum a man nafsan then you disputed fa-iddāratum concerning it fīhā but Allah wal-lahu (is) the One Who brought forth mukh'rijun what mā you were kuntum concealing taktumūna
And [recall] when you slew a man and disputed1 over it, but Allāh was to bring out that which you were concealing.
فَقُلْنَا So We said faqul'nā Strike him iḍ'ribūhu with a part of it bibaʿḍihā Like this kadhālika revives yuḥ'yī Allah l-lahu the dead l-mawtā and shows you wayurīkum His Signs āyātihi perhaps you may laʿallakum use your intellect taʿqilūna
So We said, "Strike him [i.e., the slain man] with part of it."1 Thus does Allāh bring the dead to life, and He shows you His signs that you might reason.
ثُمَّ Then thumma hardened qasat your hearts qulūbukum from min after baʿdi that dhālika so they fahiya (became) like [the] stones kal-ḥijārati or aw stronger ashaddu (in) hardness qaswatan And indeed wa-inna from mina the stones l-ḥijārati certainly (there are some) which lamā gush forth yatafajjaru from it min'hu [the] rivers l-anhāru and indeed wa-inna from them min'hā certainly (there are some) which lamā split yashaqqaqu so comes out fayakhruju from it min'hu [the] water l-māu and indeed wa-inna from them min'hā certainly (there are some) which lamā fall down yahbiṭu from min fear khashyati (of) Allah l-lahi And not wamā (is) Allah l-lahu unaware bighāfilin of what ʿammā you do taʿmalūna
Then your hearts became hardened after that, being like stones or even harder. For indeed, there are stones from which rivers burst forth, and there are some of them that split open and water comes out, and there are some of them that fall down for fear of Allāh. And Allāh is not unaware of what you do.
۞ أَفَتَطْمَعُونَ Do you hope afataṭmaʿūna that an they will believe yu'minū [for] you lakum while indeed waqad (there) has been kāna a party farīqun of them min'hum (who used to) hear yasmaʿūna (the) words kalāma (of) Allah l-lahi then thumma they distort it yuḥarrifūnahu from min after baʿdi [what] mā they understood it ʿaqalūhu while they wahum know yaʿlamūna
Do you covet [the hope, O believers], that they would believe for you while a party of them used to hear the words of Allāh and then distort it [i.e., the Torah] after they had understood it while they were knowing?
وَإِذَا And when wa-idhā they meet laqū those who alladhīna believe[d] āmanū they say qālū We have believed āmannā But when wa-idhā meet in private khalā some of them baʿḍuhum with ilā some (others) baʿḍin they say qālū Do you tell them atuḥaddithūnahum what bimā has fataḥa Allah l-lahu to you ʿalaykum so that they argue with you liyuḥājjūkum therewith bihi before ʿinda your Lord rabbikum Then do (you) not afalā understand taʿqilūna
And when they meet those who believe, they say, "We have believed"; but when they are alone with one another, they say, "Do you talk to them about what Allāh has revealed to you so they can argue with you about it before your Lord?" Then will you not reason?
أَوَلَا Do not awalā they know yaʿlamūna that anna Allah l-laha knows yaʿlamu what mā they conceal yusirrūna and what wamā they declare yuʿ'linūna
But do they not know that Allāh knows what they conceal and what they declare?
وَمِنْهُمْ And among them wamin'hum (are) unlettered ones ummiyyūna (who) do not lā know yaʿlamūna the book l-kitāba except illā wishful thinking amāniyya and not wa-in they hum (do anything) except illā guess yaẓunnūna
And among them are unlettered ones who do not know the Scripture except [indulgement in] wishful thinking, but they are only assuming.
فَوَيْلٌۭ So woe fawaylun to those who lilladhīna write yaktubūna the book l-kitāba with their (own) hands bi-aydīhim then thumma they say yaqūlūna This hādhā (is) min from ʿindi Allah l-lahi to barter liyashtarū with it bihi (for) a price thamanan little qalīlan So woe fawaylun to them lahum for what mimmā have written katabat their hands aydīhim and woe wawaylun to them lahum for what mimmā they earn yaksibūna
So woe1 to those who write the "scripture" with their own hands, then say, "This is from Allāh," in order to exchange it for a small price. Woe to them for what their hands have written and woe to them for what they earn.
وَقَالُوا۟ And they say waqālū Never lan will touch us tamassanā the Fire l-nāru except illā (for) days ayyāman numbered maʿdūdatan Say qul Have you taken attakhadhtum from ʿinda Allah l-lahi a covenant ʿahdan so never falan will break yukh'lifa Allah l-lahu His Covenant ʿahdahu Or am (do) you say taqūlūna against ʿalā Allah l-lahi what mā not lā you know taʿlamūna
And they say, "Never will the Fire touch us, except for [a few] numbered days." Say, "Have you taken a covenant with Allāh? For Allāh will never break His covenant. Or do you say about Allāh that which you do not know?"
بَلَىٰ Yes balā whoever man earned kasaba evil sayyi-atan and surrounded him wa-aḥāṭat with bihi his sins khaṭīatuhu [so] those fa-ulāika (are the) companions aṣḥābu (of) the Fire l-nāri they hum in it fīhā (will) abide forever khālidūna
Yes, [on the contrary], whoever earns evil and his sin has encompassed him - those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide therein eternally.
وَٱلَّذِينَ And those who wa-alladhīna believed āmanū and did waʿamilū righteous deeds l-ṣāliḥāti those ulāika (are the) companions aṣḥābu (of) Paradise l-janati they hum in it fīhā (will) abide forever khālidūna
But they who believe and do righteous deeds - those are the companions of Paradise; they will abide therein eternally.
وَإِذْ And when wa-idh We took akhadhnā (the) covenant mīthāqa (from the) Children banī (of) Israel is'rāīla Not lā you will worship taʿbudūna except illā Allah l-laha and with [the] parents wabil-wālidayni (be) good iḥ'sānan and (with) wadhī relatives l-qur'bā and [the] orphans wal-yatāmā and the needy wal-masākīni and speak waqūlū to [the] people lilnnāsi good ḥus'nan and establish wa-aqīmū the prayer l-ṣalata and give waātū the zakah l-zakata Then thumma you turned away tawallaytum except illā a few qalīlan of you minkum and you (were) wa-antum refusing muʿ'riḍūna
And [recall] when We took the covenant from the Children of Israel, [enjoining upon them], "Do not worship except Allāh; and to parents do good and to relatives, orphans, and the needy. And speak to people good [words] and establish prayer and give zakāh." Then you turned away, except a few of you, and you were refusing.
وَإِذْ And when wa-idh We took akhadhnā your covenant mīthāqakum Not lā will you shed tasfikūna your blood dimāakum and not walā (will) evict tukh'rijūna yourselves anfusakum from min your homes diyārikum then thumma you ratified aqrartum while you wa-antum (were) witnessing tashhadūna
And [recall] when We took your covenant, [saying], "Do not shed your [i.e., each other's] blood or evict one another from your homes." Then you acknowledged [this] while you were witnessing.
ثُمَّ Then thumma you antum (are) those hāulāi (who) kill taqtulūna yourselves anfusakum and evict watukh'rijūna a party farīqan of you minkum from min their homes diyārihim you support one another taẓāharūna against them ʿalayhim in sin bil-ith'mi and [the] transgression wal-ʿud'wāni And if wa-in they come to you yatūkum (as) captives usārā you ransom them tufādūhum while it wahuwa (was) forbidden muḥarramun to you ʿalaykum their eviction ikh'rājuhum So do you believe afatu'minūna in part (of) bibaʿḍi the Book l-kitābi and disbelieve watakfurūna in part bibaʿḍin Then what famā (should be the) recompense jazāu (for the one) who man does yafʿalu that dhālika among you minkum except illā disgrace khiz'yun in fī the life l-ḥayati (of) the world l-dun'yā and (on the) Day wayawma of [the] Resurrection l-qiyāmati they will be sent back yuraddūna to ilā (the) most severe ashaddi punishment l-ʿadhābi And not wamā (is) Allah l-lahu unaware bighāfilin of what ʿammā you do taʿmalūna
Then, you are those [same ones who are] killing one another and evicting a party of your people from their homes, cooperating against them in sin and aggression. And if they come to you as captives, you ransom them, although their eviction was forbidden to you. So do you believe in part of the Scripture and disbelieve in part? Then what is the recompense for those who do that among you except disgrace in worldly life; and on the Day of Resurrection they will be sent back to the severest of punishment. And Allāh is not unaware of what you do.
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ Those ulāika (are) the ones who alladhīna bought ish'tarawū the life l-ḥayata (of) the world l-dun'yā for the Hereafter bil-ākhirati so not falā will be lightened yukhaffafu for them ʿanhumu the punishment l-ʿadhābu and not walā they hum will be helped yunṣarūna
Those are the ones who have bought the life of this world [in exchange] for the Hereafter, so the punishment will not be lightened for them, nor will they be aided.
وَلَقَدْ And indeed walaqad We gave ātaynā Musa mūsā the Book l-kitāba and We followed up waqaffaynā from min after him baʿdihi with [the] Messengers bil-rusuli And We gave waātaynā Isa ʿīsā (the) son ib'na (of) Maryam maryama [the] clear signs l-bayināti and We supported him wa-ayyadnāhu (with) birūḥi the Holy Spirit l-qudusi Is it (not) so (that) whenever afakullamā came to you jāakum a Messenger rasūlun with what bimā (does) not lā desire tahwā yourselves anfusukumu you acted arrogantly is'takbartum So a party fafarīqan you denied kadhabtum and a party wafarīqan you kill(ed) taqtulūna
And We did certainly give Moses the Scripture [i.e., the Torah] and followed up after him with messengers. And We gave Jesus, the son of Mary, clear proofs and supported him with the Pure Spirit [i.e., the angel Gabriel]. But is it [not] that every time a messenger came to you, [O Children of Israel], with what your souls did not desire, you were arrogant? And a party [of messengers] you denied and another party you killed.
وَقَالُوا۟ And they said waqālū Our hearts qulūbunā (are) wrapped ghul'fun Nay bal has cursed them laʿanahumu Allah l-lahu for their disbelief bikuf'rihim so little faqalīlan (is) what mā they believe yu'minūna
And they said, "Our hearts are wrapped."1 But, [in fact], Allāh has cursed them for their disbelief, so little is it that they believe.
وَلَمَّا And when walammā came to them jāahum a Book kitābun of min from ʿindi Allah l-lahi confirming muṣaddiqun what (was) limā with them maʿahum though they used to wakānū from min before qablu (that), pray for victory yastaftiḥūna over ʿalā those who alladhīna disbelieved kafarū then when falammā came to them jāahum what mā they recognized ʿarafū they disbelieved kafarū in it bihi So (the) curse falaʿnatu (of) Allah l-lahi (is) on ʿalā the disbelievers l-kāfirīna
And when there came to them a Book [i.e., the Qur’ān] from Allāh confirming that which was with them - although before they used to pray for victory against those who disbelieved - but [then] when there came to them that which they recognized, they disbelieved in it; so the curse of Allāh will be upon the disbelievers.
بِئْسَمَا Evil (is) that bi'samā (for) which they have sold ish'taraw with bihi themselves anfusahum that an they disbelieve yakfurū in what bimā has revealed anzala Allah l-lahu grudging baghyan that an sends down yunazzila Allah l-lahu of min His Grace faḍlihi on ʿalā whom man He wills yashāu from min His servants ʿibādihi So they have drawn (on themselves) fabāū wrath bighaḍabin upon ʿalā wrath ghaḍabin And for the disbelievers walil'kāfirīna (is) a punishment ʿadhābun humiliating muhīnun
How wretched is that for which they sold themselves - that they would disbelieve in what Allāh has revealed through [their] outrage that Allāh would send down His favor upon whom He wills from among His servants. So they returned having [earned] wrath upon wrath. And for the disbelievers is a humiliating punishment.
وَإِذَا And when wa-idhā it is said qīla to them lahum Believe āminū in what bimā has revealed anzala Allah l-lahu they say qālū We believe nu'minu in what bimā was revealed unzila to us ʿalaynā And they disbelieve wayakfurūna in what bimā (is) besides it warāahu while it wahuwa (is) the truth l-ḥaqu confirming muṣaddiqan what limā (is) with them maʿahum Say qul Then why falima (did) you kill taqtulūna (the) Prophets anbiyāa (of) Allah l-lahi from min before qablu if in you were kuntum believers mu'minīna
And when it is said to them, "Believe in what Allāh has revealed," they say, "We believe [only] in what was revealed to us." And they disbelieve in what came after it, while it is the truth confirming that which is with them. Say, "Then why did you kill the prophets of Allāh before, if you are [indeed] believers?"
۞ وَلَقَدْ And indeed walaqad came to you jāakum Musa mūsā with [the] clear signs bil-bayināti then thumma you took ittakhadhtumu the calf l-ʿij'la from min after him baʿdihi and you wa-antum (were) wrongdoers ẓālimūna
And Moses had certainly brought you clear proofs. Then you took the calf [in worship] after that, while you were wrongdoers.
وَإِذْ And when wa-idh We took akhadhnā your covenant mīthāqakum and We raised warafaʿnā over you fawqakumu the mount l-ṭūra Hold khudhū what mā We gave you ātaynākum with firmness biquwwatin and listen wa-is'maʿū They said qālū We heard samiʿ'nā and we disobeyed waʿaṣaynā And they were made to drink wa-ush'ribū in fī their hearts qulūbihimu (love of) the calf l-ʿij'la because of their disbelief bikuf'rihim Say qul Evil (is) that bi'samā orders you (to do) it yamurukum with bihi your faith īmānukum if in you are kuntum believers mu'minīna
And [recall] when We took your covenant and raised over you the mount, [saying], "Take what We have given you with determination and listen." They said [instead], "We hear and disobey." And their hearts absorbed [the worship of] the calf because of their disbelief. Say, "How wretched is that which your faith enjoins upon you, if you should be believers."
قُلْ Say qul If in is kānat for you lakumu the home l-dāru (of) the Hereafter l-ākhiratu with ʿinda Allah l-lahi exclusively khāliṣatan from min excluding dūni the mankind l-nāsi then wish fatamannawū (for) [the] death l-mawta if in you are kuntum truthful ṣādiqīna
Say, [O Muḥammad], "If the home of the Hereafter with Allāh is for you alone and not the [other] people, then wish for death, if you should be truthful."
وَلَن And never (will) walan they wish for it yatamannawhu ever abadan because bimā (of what) sent ahead qaddamat their hands aydīhim And Allah wal-lahu (is) All-Knower ʿalīmun of the wrongdoers bil-ẓālimīna
But never will they wish for it, ever, because of what their hands have put forth. And Allāh is Knowing of the wrongdoers.
وَلَتَجِدَنَّهُمْ And surely you will find them walatajidannahum (the) most greedy aḥraṣa (of) [the] mankind l-nāsi for ʿalā life ḥayatin and (greedier) than wamina those who alladhīna associate[d] partners (with Allah) ashrakū Loves yawaddu (each) one of them aḥaduhum if law he could be granted a life yuʿammaru (of) a thousand alfa year(s) sanatin But not wamā it huwa (will) remove him bimuzaḥziḥihi from mina the punishment l-ʿadhābi that an he should be granted life yuʿammara And Allah wal-lahu (is) All-Seer baṣīrun of what bimā they do yaʿmalūna
And you will surely find them the most greedy of people for life - [even] more than those who associate others with Allāh. One of them wishes that he could be granted life a thousand years, but it would not remove him in the least from the [coming] punishment that he should be granted life. And Allāh is Seeing of what they do.
قُلْ Say qul Whoever man is kāna an enemy ʿaduwwan to Jibreel lijib'rīla then indeed he fa-innahu brought it down nazzalahu on ʿalā your heart qalbika by (the) permission bi-idh'ni (of) Allah l-lahi confirming muṣaddiqan what limā (was) bayna before it yadayhi and a guidance wahudan and glad tiding(s) wabush'rā for the believers lil'mu'minīna
Say, "Whoever is an enemy to Gabriel - it is [none but] he who has brought it [i.e., the Qur’ān] down upon your heart, [O Muḥammad], by permission of Allāh, confirming that which was before it and as guidance and good tidings for the believers."
مَن Whoever man is kāna an enemy ʿaduwwan (to) Allah lillahi and His Angels wamalāikatihi and His Messengers warusulihi and Jibreel wajib'rīla and Meekael wamīkāla then indeed fa-inna Allah l-laha (is) an enemy ʿaduwwun to the disbelievers lil'kāfirīna
Whoever is an enemy to Allāh and His angels and His messengers and Gabriel and Michael - then indeed, Allāh is an enemy to the disbelievers.
وَلَقَدْ And indeed walaqad We revealed anzalnā to you ilayka Verses āyātin clear bayyinātin and not wamā disbelieves yakfuru in them bihā except illā the defiantly disobedient l-fāsiqūna
And We have certainly revealed to you verses [which are] clear proofs, and no one would deny them except the defiantly disobedient.
أَوَكُلَّمَا And is (it not that) whenever awakullamā they took ʿāhadū a covenant ʿahdan threw it away nabadhahu a party farīqun of them min'hum Nay bal most of them aktharuhum (do) not lā believe yu'minūna
Is it not [true] that every time they took a covenant a party of them threw it away? But, [in fact], most of them do not believe.
وَلَمَّا And when walammā came to them jāahum a Messenger rasūlun (of) min from ʿindi Allah l-lahi confirming muṣaddiqun what limā (was) with them maʿahum threw away nabadha a party farīqun of mina those who alladhīna were given ūtū the Book l-kitāba (the) Book kitāba (of) Allah l-lahi behind warāa their backs ẓuhūrihim as if they ka-annahum (do) not lā know yaʿlamūna
And when a messenger from Allāh came to them confirming that which was with them, a party of those who had been given the Scripture threw the Scripture of Allāh [i.e., the Torah] behind their backs as if they did not know [what it contained].
وَٱتَّبَعُوا۟ And they followed wa-ittabaʿū what mā recite(d) tatlū the devils l-shayāṭīnu over ʿalā (the) kingdom mul'ki (of) Sulaiman sulaymāna And not wamā disbelieved kafara Sulaiman sulaymānu [and] but walākinna the devils l-shayāṭīna disbelieved kafarū they teach yuʿallimūna the people l-nāsa [the] magic l-siḥ'ra and what wamā was sent down unzila to ʿalā the two angels l-malakayni in Babylon bibābila Harut hārūta and Marut wamārūta And not wamā they both teach yuʿallimāni any min one aḥadin unless ḥattā they [both] say yaqūlā Only innamā we naḥnu (are) a trial fit'natun so (do) not falā disbelieve takfur But they learn fayataʿallamūna from those two min'humā what mā [they] causes separation yufarriqūna with it bihi between bayna the man l-mari and his spouse wazawjihi And not wamā they (could) hum at all [be those who] harm biḍārrīna with it bihi any min one aḥadin except illā by permission bi-idh'ni (of) Allah l-lahi And they learn wayataʿallamūna what mā harms them yaḍurruhum and not walā profits them yanfaʿuhum And indeed walaqad they knew ʿalimū that whoever lamani buys it ish'tarāhu not mā for him lahu in fī the Hereafter l-ākhirati any min share khalāqin And surely evil walabi'sa (is) what mā they sold sharaw with it bihi themselves anfusahum if law they were kānū (to) know yaʿlamūna
And they followed [instead] what the devils had recited during the reign of Solomon. It was not Solomon who disbelieved, but the devils disbelieved, teaching people magic and that which was revealed to the two angels at Babylon, Hārūt and Mārūt. But they [i.e., the two angels] do not teach anyone unless they say, "We are a trial, so do not disbelieve [by practicing magic]."1 And [yet] they learn from them that by which they cause separation between a man and his wife. But they do not harm anyone through it except by permission of Allāh. And they [i.e., people] learn what harms them and does not benefit them. But they [i.e., the Children of Israel] certainly knew that whoever purchased it [i.e., magic] would not have in the Hereafter any share. And wretched is that for which they sold themselves, if they only knew.
وَلَوْ And if walaw [that] they annahum (had) believed āmanū and feared (Allah) wa-ittaqaw surely (the) reward lamathūbatun (of) min from ʿindi Allah l-lahi (would have been) better khayrun if law they were kānū (to) know yaʿlamūna
And if they had believed and feared Allāh, then the reward from Allāh would have been [far] better, if they only knew.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you yāayyuhā who alladhīna believe[d] āmanū (Do) not lā say taqūlū Raina rāʿinā and say waqūlū Unzurna unẓur'nā and listen wa-is'maʿū And for the disbelievers walil'kāfirīna (is) a punishment ʿadhābun painful alīmun
O you who have believed, say not [to Allāh's Messenger], "Rāʿinā" but say, "Unẓurnā"1 and listen. And for the disbelievers is a painful punishment.
مَّا (Do) not mā like yawaddu those who alladhīna disbelieve kafarū from min (the) People ahli (of) the Book l-kitābi and not walā those who associate partners (with Allah) l-mush'rikīna that an (there should) be sent down yunazzala to you ʿalaykum any min good khayrin from min your Lord rabbikum And Allah wal-lahu chooses yakhtaṣṣu for His Mercy biraḥmatihi whom man He wills yashāu And Allah wal-lahu (is the) Possessor dhū (of) [the] Bounty l-faḍli [the] Great l-ʿaẓīmi
Neither those who disbelieve from the People of the Scripture [i.e., the Jews and Christians] nor the polytheists wish that any good should be sent down to you from your Lord. But Allāh selects for His mercy whom He wills, and Allāh is the possessor of great bounty.
۞ مَا What mā We abrogate nansakh (of) min a sign āyatin or aw [We] cause it to be forgotten nunsihā We bring nati better bikhayrin than it min'hā or aw similar (to) it mith'lihā Do not alam you know taʿlam that anna Allah l-laha over ʿalā every kulli thing shayin (is) All-Powerful qadīrun
We do not abrogate a verse or cause it to be forgotten except that We bring forth [one] better than it or similar to it. Do you not know that Allāh is over all things competent?
أَلَمْ Do not alam you know taʿlam that anna Allah l-laha for Him lahu (is the) Kingdom mul'ku (of) the heavens l-samāwāti and the earth wal-arḍi And not wamā (is) for you lakum from min besides dūni Allah l-lahi any min protector waliyyin and not walā any helper naṣīrin
Do you not know that to Allāh belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and [that] you have not besides Allāh any protector or any helper?
أَمْ Or am (do) you wish turīdūna that an you ask tasalū your Messenger rasūlakum as kamā was asked su-ila Musa mūsā from min before qablu And whoever waman exchanges yatabaddali [the] disbelief l-kuf'ra with [the] faith bil-īmāni so certainly faqad he went astray (from) ḍalla (the) evenness sawāa (of) the way l-sabīli
Or do you intend to ask1 your Messenger as Moses was asked before? And whoever exchanges faith for disbelief has certainly strayed from the soundness of the way.
وَدَّ Wish[ed] wadda many kathīrun from min (the) People ahli (of) the Book l-kitābi if law they could turn you back yaruddūnakum from min after baʿdi your (having) faith īmānikum (to) disbelievers kuffāran (out of) jealousy ḥasadan from min (of) ʿindi themselves anfusihim (even) from min after baʿdi [what] mā became clear tabayyana to them lahumu the truth l-ḥaqu So forgive fa-iʿ'fū and overlook wa-iṣ'faḥū until ḥattā brings yatiya Allah l-lahu His Command bi-amrihi Indeed inna Allah l-laha on ʿalā every kulli thing shayin (is) All-Powerful qadīrun
Many of the People of the Scripture wish they could turn you back to disbelief after you have believed, out of envy from themselves [even] after the truth has become clear to them. So pardon and overlook until Allāh delivers His command. Indeed, Allāh is over all things competent.
وَأَقِيمُوا۟ And establish wa-aqīmū the prayer l-ṣalata and give waātū [the] zakah l-zakata And whatever wamā you send forth tuqaddimū for yourselves li-anfusikum of min good (deeds) khayrin you will find it tajidūhu with ʿinda Allah l-lahi Indeed inna Allah l-laha of what bimā you do taʿmalūna (is) All-Seer baṣīrun
And establish prayer and give zakāh, and whatever good you put forward for yourselves - you will find it with Allāh. Indeed Allāh, of what you do, is Seeing.
وَقَالُوا۟ And they said waqālū Never lan will enter yadkhula the Paradise l-janata except illā who man is kāna (a) Jew[s] hūdan or aw (a) Christian[s] naṣārā That til'ka (is) their wishful thinking amāniyyuhum Say qul Bring hātū your proof bur'hānakum if in you are kuntum [those who are] truthful ṣādiqīna
And they say, "None will enter Paradise except one who is a Jew or a Christian." That is [merely] their wishful thinking. Say, "Produce your proof, if you should be truthful."
بَلَىٰ Yes balā whoever man submits aslama his face wajhahu to Allah lillahi and he wahuwa (is) a good-doer muḥ'sinun so for him falahu (is) his reward ajruhu with ʿinda his Lord rabbihi And no walā fear khawfun (will be) on them ʿalayhim and not walā they hum (will) grieve yaḥzanūna
Yes, [on the contrary], whoever submits his face [i.e., self] in Islām to Allāh while being a doer of good will have his reward with his Lord. And no fear will there be concerning them, nor will they grieve.
وَقَالَتِ And said waqālati the Jews l-yahūdu Not laysati the Christians l-naṣārā (are) on ʿalā anything shayin and said waqālati the Christians l-naṣārā Not laysati the Jews l-yahūdu (are) on ʿalā anything shayin although they wahum recite yatlūna the Book l-kitāba Like that kadhālika said qāla those who alladhīna (do) not lā know yaʿlamūna similar mith'la their saying qawlihim [So] Allah fal-lahu will judge yaḥkumu between them baynahum (on the) Day yawma (of) Resurrection l-qiyāmati in what fīmā they were kānū [in it] fīhi differing yakhtalifūna
The Jews say, "The Christians have nothing [true] to stand on," and the Christians say, "The Jews have nothing to stand on," although they [both] recite the Scripture. Thus do those who know not [i.e., the polytheists] speak the same as their words. But Allāh will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning that over which they used to differ.
وَمَنْ And who waman (is) more unjust aẓlamu than (one) who mimman prevents manaʿa (the) masajid masājida (of) Allah l-lahi to an be mentioned yudh'kara in them fīhā His name us'muhu and strives wasaʿā for fī their destruction kharābihā Those ulāika Not mā it is kāna for them lahum that an they enter them yadkhulūhā except illā (like) those in fear khāifīna For them lahum in fī the world l-dun'yā (is) disgrace khiz'yun and for them walahum in fī the Hereafter l-ākhirati (is) a punishment ʿadhābun great ʿaẓīmun
And who are more unjust than those who prevent the name of Allāh from being mentioned [i.e., praised] in His mosques and strive toward their destruction. It is not for them to enter them except in fear. For them in this world is disgrace, and they will have in the Hereafter a great punishment.
وَلِلَّهِ And for Allah walillahi (is) the east l-mashriqu and the west wal-maghribu so wherever fa-aynamā you turn tuwallū [so] there fathamma (is the) face wajhu (of) Allah l-lahi Indeed inna Allah l-laha (is) All-Encompassing wāsiʿun All-Knowing ʿalīmun
And to Allāh belongs the east and the west. So wherever you [might] turn, there is the Face1 of Allāh. Indeed, Allāh is all-Encompassing and Knowing.
وَقَالُوا۟ And they said waqālū has taken ittakhadha Allah l-lahu a son waladan Glory be to Him sub'ḥānahu Nay bal for Him lahu (is) what mā (is) in fī the heavens l-samāwāti and the earth wal-arḍi All kullun to Him lahu (are) humbly obedient qānitūna
They say, "Allāh has taken a son." Exalted is He!1 Rather, to Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and the earth. All are devoutly obedient to Him,
بَدِيعُ (The) Originator badīʿu (of) the heavens l-samāwāti and the earth wal-arḍi And when wa-idhā He decrees qaḍā a matter amran [so] only fa-innamā He says yaqūlu to it lahu Be kun and it becomes fayakūnu
Originator of the heavens and the earth. When He decrees a matter, He only says to it, "Be," and it is.
وَقَالَ And said waqāla those who alladhīna (do) not lā know yaʿlamūna Why not lawlā speaks to us yukallimunā Allah l-lahu or aw comes to us tatīnā a sign āyatun Like that kadhālika said qāla those alladhīna from min before them qablihim similar mith'la their saying qawlihim Became alike tashābahat their hearts qulūbuhum Indeed qad We have made clear bayyannā the signs l-āyāti for people liqawmin (who) firmly believe yūqinūna
Those who do not know say, "Why does Allāh not speak to us or there come to us a sign?" Thus spoke those before them like their words. Their hearts resemble each other. We have shown clearly the signs to a people who are certain [in faith].
إِنَّآ Indeed We innā [We] have sent you arsalnāka with the truth bil-ḥaqi (as) a bearer of good news bashīran and (as) a warner wanadhīran And not walā you will be asked tus'alu about ʿan (the) companions aṣḥābi (of) the blazing Fire l-jaḥīmi
Indeed, We have sent you, [O Muḥammad], with the truth as a bringer of good tidings and a warner, and you will not be asked about the companions of Hellfire.
وَلَن And never walan will be pleased tarḍā with you ʿanka the Jews l-yahūdu and [not] walā the Christians l-naṣārā until ḥattā you follow tattabiʿa their religion millatahum Say qul Indeed inna (the) Guidance hudā (of) Allah l-lahi it huwa (is) the Guidance l-hudā And if wala-ini you follow ittabaʿta their desires ahwāahum after baʿda what alladhī has come to you jāaka of mina the knowledge l-ʿil'mi not mā for you laka from mina Allah l-lahi any min protector waliyyin and not walā any helper naṣīrin
And never will the Jews and the Christians approve of you until you follow their religion. Say, "Indeed, the guidance of Allāh is the [only] guidance." If you were to follow their desires after what has come to you of knowledge, you would have against Allāh no protector or helper.
ٱلَّذِينَ Those alladhīna We have given them ātaynāhumu the Book l-kitāba recite it yatlūnahu (as it has the) right ḥaqqa (of) its recitation tilāwatihi Those (people) ulāika believe yu'minūna in it bihi And whoever waman disbelieves yakfur in it bihi then those fa-ulāika they humu (are) the losers l-khāsirūna
Those to whom We have given the Book recite it with its true recital.1 They [are the ones who] believe in it. And whoever disbelieves in it - it is they who are the losers.
O Children of Israel, remember My favor which I have bestowed upon you and that I preferred you over the worlds.
وَٱتَّقُوا۟ And fear wa-ittaqū a day yawman not lā will avail tajzī a soul nafsun (of) ʿan (another) soul nafsin anything shayan and not walā will be accepted yuq'balu from it min'hā any compensation ʿadlun and not walā will benefit it tanfaʿuhā any intercession shafāʿatun and not walā they hum will be helped yunṣarūna
And fear a Day when no soul will suffice for another soul1 at all, and no compensation will be accepted from it, nor will any intercession benefit it, nor will they be aided.
۞ وَإِذِ And when wa-idhi tried ib'talā Ibrahim ib'rāhīma his Lord rabbuhu with words bikalimātin and he fulfilled them fa-atammahunna He said qāla Indeed I innī (am) the One to make you jāʿiluka for the mankind lilnnāsi a leader imāman He said qāla And from wamin my offspring dhurriyyatī He said qāla (Does) not lā reach yanālu My Covenant ʿahdī (to) the wrongdoers l-ẓālimīna
And [mention, O Muḥammad], when Abraham was tried by his Lord with words [i.e., commands] and he fulfilled them. [Allāh] said, "Indeed, I will make you a leader for the people." [Abraham] said, "And of my descendants?" [Allāh] said, "My covenant does not include the wrongdoers."
وَإِذْ And when wa-idh We made jaʿalnā the House l-bayta a place of return mathābatan for mankind lilnnāsi and (a place of) security wa-amnan and (said), "Take wa-ittakhidhū [from] min (the) standing place maqāmi (of) Ibrahim ib'rāhīma (as) a place of prayer muṣallan And We made a covenant waʿahid'nā with ilā Ibrahim ib'rāhīma and Ishmael wa-is'māʿīla [that] an [You both] purify ṭahhirā My House baytiya for those who circumambulate lilṭṭāifīna and those who seclude themselves for devotion and prayer wal-ʿākifīna and those who bow down wal-rukaʿi and those who prostrate l-sujūdi
And [mention] when We made the House [i.e., the Kaʿbah] a place of return for the people and [a place of] security. And take, [O believers], from the standing place of Abraham a place of prayer. And We charged Abraham and Ishmael, [saying], "Purify My House for those who perform ṭawāf1 and those who are staying [there] for worship and those who bow and prostrate [in prayer]."
وَإِذْ And when wa-idh said qāla Ibrahim ib'rāhīmu My Lord rabbi make ij'ʿal this hādhā a city baladan secure āminan and provide wa-ur'zuq its people ahlahu with mina fruits l-thamarāti (to) whoever man believed āmana from them min'hum in Allah bil-lahi and the Day wal-yawmi the Last l-ākhiri He said qāla And whoever waman disbelieved kafara [then] I will grant him enjoyment fa-umattiʿuhu a little qalīlan then thumma I will force him aḍṭarruhu to ilā (the) punishment ʿadhābi (of) the Fire l-nāri and evil wabi'sa (is) the destination l-maṣīru
And [mention] when Abraham said, "My Lord, make this a secure city and provide its people with fruits - whoever of them believes in Allāh and the Last Day." [Allāh] said, "And whoever disbelieves - I will grant him enjoyment for a little; then I will force him to the punishment of the Fire, and wretched is the destination."
وَإِذْ And when wa-idh (was) raising yarfaʿu Ibrahim ib'rāhīmu the foundations l-qawāʿida of mina the House l-bayti and Ishmael wa-is'māʿīlu (saying), "Our Lord rabbanā Accept taqabbal from us minnā Indeed You innaka [You] (are) anta the All-Hearing l-samīʿu the All-Knowing l-ʿalīmu
And [mention] when Abraham was raising the foundations of the House and [with him] Ishmael, [saying], "Our Lord, accept [this] from us. Indeed, You are the Hearing,1 the Knowing.2
رَبَّنَا Our Lord rabbanā [and] Make us wa-ij'ʿalnā both submissive mus'limayni to You laka And from wamin our offspring dhurriyyatinā a community ummatan submissive mus'limatan to You laka And show us wa-arinā our ways of worship manāsikanā and turn watub to us ʿalaynā Indeed You innaka [You] (are) anta the Oft-returning l-tawābu the Most Merciful l-raḥīmu
Our Lord, and make us Muslims [in submission] to You and from our descendants a Muslim nation [in submission] to You. And show us our rites [of worship] and accept our repentance. Indeed, You are the Accepting of Repentance, the Merciful.
رَبَّنَا Our Lord rabbanā [And] raise up wa-ib'ʿath in them fīhim a Messenger rasūlan from them min'hum (who) will recite yatlū to them ʿalayhim Your Verses āyātika and will teach them wayuʿallimuhumu the Book l-kitāba and the wisdom wal-ḥik'mata and purify them wayuzakkīhim Indeed You innaka You (are) anta the All-Mighty l-ʿazīzu the All-Wise l-ḥakīmu
Our Lord, and send among them a messenger from themselves who will recite to them Your verses and teach them the Book and wisdom and purify them. Indeed, You are the Exalted in Might,1 the Wise."
وَمَن And who waman will turn away yarghabu from ʿan (the) religion millati (of) Ibrahim ib'rāhīma except illā who man fooled safiha himself nafsahu And indeed walaqadi We chose him iṣ'ṭafaynāhu in fī the world l-dun'yā and indeed he wa-innahu in fī the Hereafter l-ākhirati surely (will be) among lamina the righteous l-ṣāliḥīna
And who would be averse to the religion of Abraham except one who makes a fool of himself. And We had chosen him in this world, and indeed he, in the Hereafter, will be among the righteous.
إِذْ When idh said qāla to him lahu his Lord rabbuhu Submit (yourself) aslim he said qāla I (have) submitted (myself) aslamtu to (the) Lord lirabbi (of) the worlds l-ʿālamīna
When his Lord said to him, "Submit," he said, "I have submitted [in Islām]1 to the Lord of the worlds."
وَوَصَّىٰ And enjoined wawaṣṣā [it] bihā Ibrahim ib'rāhīmu (upon) his sons banīhi and Yaqub wayaʿqūbu O my sons yābaniyya Indeed inna Allah l-laha has chosen iṣ'ṭafā for you lakumu the religion l-dīna so not falā (should) you die tamūtunna except illā while you wa-antum (are) submissive mus'limūna
And Abraham instructed his sons [to do the same] and [so did] Jacob, [saying], "O my sons, indeed Allāh has chosen for you this religion, so do not die except while you are Muslims."
أَمْ Or am were you kuntum witnesses shuhadāa when idh came to ḥaḍara Yaqub yaʿqūba [the] death l-mawtu when idh he said qāla to his sons libanīhi What mā will you worship taʿbudūna from min after me baʿdī They said qālū We will worship naʿbudu your God ilāhaka and (the) God wa-ilāha (of) your forefathers ābāika Ibrahim ib'rāhīma and Ishmael wa-is'māʿīla and Isaac wa-is'ḥāqa God ilāhan One wāḥidan And we wanaḥnu to Him lahu (are) submissive mus'limūna
Or were you witnesses when death approached Jacob, when he said to his sons, "What will you worship after me?" They said, "We will worship your God and the God of your fathers, Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac - one God.1 And we are Muslims [in submission] to Him."
تِلْكَ This til'ka (was) a community ummatun (which) qad has passed away khalat for it lahā what mā it earned kasabat and for you walakum what mā you have earned kasabtum And not walā you will be asked tus'alūna about what ʿammā they used to kānū do yaʿmalūna
That was a nation which has passed on. It will have [the consequence of] what it earned, and you will have what you have earned. And you will not be asked about what they used to do.
وَقَالُوا۟ And they said waqālū Be kūnū Jews hūdan or aw Christians naṣārā (then) you will be guided tahtadū Say qul Nay bal (the) religion millata (of) Ibrahim ib'rāhīma (the) upright ḥanīfan and not wamā he was kāna of mina those who associated partners (with Allah) l-mush'rikīna
They say, "Be Jews or Christians [so] you will be guided." Say, "Rather, [we follow] the religion of Abraham, inclining toward truth, and he was not of the polytheists."1
قُولُوٓا۟ Say qūlū We have believed āmannā in Allah bil-lahi and what wamā (is) revealed unzila to us ilaynā and what wamā was revealed unzila to ilā Ibrahim ib'rāhīma and Ishmael wa-is'māʿīla and Isaac wa-is'ḥāqa and Yaqub wayaʿqūba and the descendants wal-asbāṭi and what wamā was given ūtiya (to) Musa mūsā and Isa waʿīsā and what wamā was given ūtiya (to) the Prophets l-nabiyūna from min their Lord rabbihim Not lā we make distinction nufarriqu between bayna any aḥadin of them min'hum And we wanaḥnu to Him lahu (are) submissive mus'limūna
Say, [O believers], "We have believed in Allāh and what has been revealed to us and what has been revealed to Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac and Jacob and the Descendants [al-Asbāṭ]1 and what was given to Moses and Jesus and what was given to the prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and we are Muslims [in submission] to Him."
فَإِنْ So if fa-in they believe[d] āmanū in (the) like bimith'li (of) what mā you have believed āmantum in [it] bihi then indeed faqadi they are (rightly) guided ih'tadaw But if wa-in they turn away tawallaw then only fa-innamā they hum (are) in fī dissension shiqāqin So will suffice you against them fasayakfīkahumu Allah l-lahu and He wahuwa (is) the All-Hearing l-samīʿu the All-Knowing l-ʿalīmu
So if they believe in the same as you believe in, then they have been [rightly] guided; but if they turn away, they are only in dissension, and Allāh will be sufficient for you against them. And He is the Hearing, the Knowing.
صِبْغَةَ (The) color (religion) ṣib'ghata (of) Allah l-lahi And who waman (is) better aḥsanu than mina Allah l-lahi at coloring ṣib'ghatan And we wanaḥnu to Him lahu (are) worshippers ʿābidūna
[And say, "Ours is] the religion of Allāh. And who is better than Allāh in [ordaining] religion? And we are worshippers of Him."
قُلْ Say qul Do you argue with us atuḥājjūnanā about fī Allah l-lahi while He wahuwa (is) our Lord rabbunā and your Lord warabbukum And for us walanā (are) our deeds aʿmālunā and for you walakum (are) your deeds aʿmālukum and we wanaḥnu to Him lahu (are) sincere mukh'liṣūna
Say, [O Muḥammad], "Do you argue with us about Allāh while He is our Lord and your Lord? For us are our deeds, and for you are your deeds. And we are sincere [in deed and intention] to Him."
أَمْ Or am (do) you say taqūlūna that inna Ibrahim ib'rāhīma and Ishmael wa-is'māʿīla and Isaac wa-is'ḥāqa and Yaqub wayaʿqūba and the descendants wal-asbāṭa were kānū Jews hūdan or aw Christians naṣārā Say qul Are you a-antum better knowing aʿlamu or ami (is) Allah l-lahu And who waman (is) more unjust aẓlamu than (the one) who mimman concealed katama a testimony shahādatan (that) he has ʿindahu from mina Allah l-lahi And not wamā (is) Allah l-lahu unaware bighāfilin of what ʿammā you do taʿmalūna
Or do you say that Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac and Jacob and the Descendants were Jews or Christians? Say, "Are you more knowing or is Allāh?" And who is more unjust than one who conceals a testimony1 he has from Allāh? And Allāh is not unaware of what you do.
That is a nation which has passed on. It will have [the consequence of] what it earned, and you will have what you have earned. And you will not be asked about what they used to do.
۞ سَيَقُولُ Will say sayaqūlu the foolish ones l-sufahāu from mina the people l-nāsi What mā (has) turned them wallāhum from ʿan their direction of prayer qib'latihimu which allatī they were used to kānū [on it] ʿalayhā Say qul For Allah lillahi (is) the east l-mashriqu and the west wal-maghribu He guides yahdī whom man He wills yashāu to ilā a path ṣirāṭin straight mus'taqīmin
The foolish among the people will say, "What has turned them away from their qiblah,1 which they used to face?"2 Say, "To Allāh belongs the east and the west. He guides whom He wills to a straight path."
وَكَذَٰلِكَ And thus wakadhālika We made you jaʿalnākum a community ummatan (of the) middle way wasaṭan so that you will be litakūnū witnesses shuhadāa over ʿalā the mankind l-nāsi and will be wayakūna the Messenger l-rasūlu on you ʿalaykum a witness shahīdan And not wamā We made jaʿalnā the direction of prayer l-qib'lata which allatī you were used to kunta [on it] ʿalayhā except illā that We make evident linaʿlama (he) who man follows yattabiʿu the Messenger l-rasūla from (he) who mimman turns back yanqalibu on ʿalā his heels ʿaqibayhi And indeed wa-in it was kānat certainly a great (test) lakabīratan except illā for ʿalā those whom alladhīna guided hadā (by) Allah l-lahu And not wamā will kāna Allah l-lahu let go waste liyuḍīʿa your faith īmānakum Indeed inna Allah l-laha (is) to [the] mankind bil-nāsi Full of Kindness laraūfun Most Merciful raḥīmun
And thus We have made you a median [i.e., just] community that you will be witnesses over the people and the Messenger will be a witness over you. And We did not make the qiblah which you used to face except that We might make evident who would follow the Messenger from who would turn back on his heels.1 And indeed, it is difficult except for those whom Allāh has guided. And never would Allāh have caused you to lose your faith [i.e., your previous prayers]. Indeed Allāh is, to the people, Kind and Merciful.
قَدْ Indeed qad We see narā (the) turning taqalluba (of) your face wajhika towards fī the heaven l-samāi So We will surely turn you falanuwalliyannaka (to the) direction of prayer qib'latan you will be pleased with tarḍāhā So turn fawalli your face wajhaka towards the direction shaṭra (of) Al-Masjid l-masjidi Al-Haraam l-ḥarāmi and wherever waḥaythu that mā you are kuntum [so] turn fawallū your faces wujūhakum (in) its direction shaṭrahu And indeed wa-inna those who alladhīna were given ūtū the Book l-kitāba surely know layaʿlamūna that it annahu (is) the truth l-ḥaqu from min their Lord rabbihim And not wamā (is) Allah l-lahu unaware bighāfilin of what ʿammā they do yaʿmalūna
We have certainly seen the turning of your face, [O Muḥammad], toward the heaven, and We will surely turn you to a qiblah with which you will be pleased. So turn your face [i.e., yourself] toward al-Masjid al-Ḥarām.1 And wherever you [believers] are, turn your faces [i.e., yourselves] toward it [in prayer]. Indeed, those who have been given the Scripture [i.e., the Jews and the Christians] well know that it is the truth from their Lord. And Allāh is not unaware of what they do.
وَلَئِنْ And even if wala-in you come atayta (to) those who alladhīna were given ūtū the Book l-kitāba with all bikulli (the) signs āyatin not mā they would follow tabiʿū your direction of prayer qib'lataka and not wamā (will) you (be) anta a follower bitābiʿin (of) their direction of prayer qib'latahum And not wamā some of them baʿḍuhum (are) followers bitābiʿin (of the) direction of prayer qib'lata (of each) other baʿḍin And if wala-ini you followed ittabaʿta their desires ahwāahum from min after baʿdi [what] mā came to you jāaka of mina the knowledge l-ʿil'mi indeed, you innaka (would) then idhan (be) surely among lamina the wrongdoers l-ẓālimīna
And if you brought to those who were given the Scripture every sign, they would not follow your qiblah. Nor will you be a follower of their qiblah. Nor would they be followers of one another's qiblah. So if you were to follow their desires after what has come to you of knowledge, indeed, you would then be among the wrongdoers.
ٱلَّذِينَ (To) those whom alladhīna We gave [them] ātaynāhumu the Book l-kitāba they recognize it yaʿrifūnahu like kamā they recognize yaʿrifūna their sons abnāahum And indeed wa-inna a group farīqan of them min'hum surely they conceal layaktumūna the Truth l-ḥaqa while they wahum know yaʿlamūna
Those to whom We gave the Scripture know him [i.e., Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ)] as they know their own sons. But indeed, a party of them conceal the truth while they know [it].
ٱلْحَقُّ The Truth al-ḥaqu (is) from min your Lord rabbika so (do) not falā be takūnanna among mina the doubters l-mum'tarīna
The truth is from your Lord, so never be among the doubters.
وَلِكُلٍّۢ And for everyone walikullin (is) a direction wij'hatun he huwa turns towards it muwallīhā so race fa-is'tabiqū (to) the good l-khayrāti Wherever ayna that mā you will be takūnū will bring yati you bikumu (by) Allah l-lahu together jamīʿan Indeed inna Allah l-laha (is) on ʿalā every kulli thing shayin All-Powerful qadīrun
For each [religious following] is a [prayer] direction toward which it faces. So race to [all that is] good. Wherever you may be, Allāh will bring you forth [for judgement] all together. Indeed, Allāh is over all things competent.
وَمِنْ And from wamin wherever ḥaythu you start forth kharajta [so] turn fawalli your face wajhaka (in the) direction shaṭra (of) Al-Masjid l-masjidi Al-Haraam l-ḥarāmi And indeed, it wa-innahu (is) surely the truth lalḥaqqu from min your Lord rabbika And not wamā (is) Allah l-lahu unaware bighāfilin of what ʿammā you do taʿmalūna
So from wherever you go out [for prayer, O Muḥammad], turn your face toward al-Masjid al-Ḥarām, and indeed, it is the truth from your Lord. And Allāh is not unaware of what you do.
وَمِنْ And from wamin wherever ḥaythu you start forth kharajta [so] turn fawalli your face wajhaka (in the) direction shaṭra (of) Al-Masjid l-masjidi Al-Haraam l-ḥarāmi And wherever waḥaythu that mā you (all) are kuntum [so] turn fawallū your faces wujūhakum (in) its direction shaṭrahu so that not li-allā will be yakūna for the people lilnnāsi against you ʿalaykum any argument ḥujjatun except illā those who alladhīna wronged ẓalamū among them min'hum so (do) not falā fear them takhshawhum but fear Me wa-ikh'shawnī And that I complete wali-utimma My favor niʿ'matī upon you ʿalaykum [and] so that you may walaʿallakum (be) guided tahtadūna
And from wherever you go out [for prayer], turn your face toward al-Masjid al-Ḥarām. And wherever you [believers] may be, turn your faces toward it in order that the people will not have any argument against you, except for those of them who commit wrong; so fear them not but fear Me. And [it is] so I may complete My favor upon you and that you may be guided,
كَمَآ As kamā We sent arsalnā among you fīkum a Messenger rasūlan from you minkum (who) recites yatlū to you ʿalaykum Our verses āyātinā and purifies you wayuzakkīkum and teaches you wayuʿallimukumu the Book l-kitāba and the wisdom wal-ḥik'mata and teaches you wayuʿallimukum what mā not lam you were takūnū knowing taʿlamūna
Just as We have sent among you a messenger from yourselves reciting to you Our verses and purifying you and teaching you the Book and wisdom1 and teaching you that which you did not know.
فَٱذْكُرُونِىٓ So remember Me fa-udh'kurūnī I will remember you adhkur'kum and be grateful wa-ush'kurū to Me lī and (do) not walā (be) ungrateful to Me takfurūni
So remember Me; I will remember you. And be grateful to Me and do not deny Me.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you yāayyuhā who alladhīna believe[d] āmanū Seek help is'taʿīnū through patience bil-ṣabri and the prayer wal-ṣalati Indeed inna Allah l-laha (is) with maʿa the patient ones l-ṣābirīna
O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allāh is with the patient.
وَلَا And (do) not walā say taqūlū for (the ones) who liman are slain yuq'talu in fī (the) way sabīli (of) Allah l-lahi (They are) dead amwātun Nay bal (they are) alive aḥyāon [and] but walākin you (do) not lā perceive tashʿurūna
And do not say about those who are killed in the way of Allāh, "They are dead." Rather, they are alive, but you perceive [it] not.
وَلَنَبْلُوَنَّكُم And surely We will test you walanabluwannakum with something bishayin of mina [the] fear l-khawfi and [the] hunger wal-jūʿi and loss wanaqṣin of mina [the] wealth l-amwāli and [the] lives wal-anfusi and [the] fruits wal-thamarāti but give good news wabashiri (to) the patient ones l-ṣābirīna
And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient,
ٱلَّذِينَ Those who alladhīna when idhā strikes them aṣābathum a misfortune muṣībatun they say qālū Indeed, we innā belong to Allah lillahi and indeed we wa-innā towards Him ilayhi will return rājiʿūna
Who, when disaster strikes them, say, "Indeed we belong to Allāh, and indeed to Him we will return."
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ Those ulāika on them ʿalayhim (are) blessings ṣalawātun from min their Lord rabbihim and Mercy waraḥmatun And those wa-ulāika [they] humu (are) the guided ones l-muh'tadūna
Those are the ones upon whom are blessings from their Lord and mercy. And it is those who are the [rightly] guided.
۞ إِنَّ Indeed inna the Safa l-ṣafā and the Marwah wal-marwata (are) from min (the) symbols shaʿāiri (of) Allah l-lahi So whoever faman performs Hajj ḥajja (of) the House l-bayta or awi performs Umrah iʿ'tamara so no falā blame junāḥa on him ʿalayhi that an he walks yaṭṭawwafa between [both of] them bihimā And whoever waman voluntarily does taṭawwaʿa good khayran then indeed fa-inna Allah l-laha (is) All-Appreciative shākirun All-Knowing ʿalīmun
Indeed, aṣ-Ṣafā and al-Marwah are among the symbols1 of Allāh. So whoever makes ḥajj [pilgrimage] to the House or performs ʿumrah - there is no blame upon him for walking between them.2 And whoever volunteers good - then indeed, Allāh is Appreciative3 and Knowing.
إِنَّ Indeed inna those who alladhīna conceal yaktumūna what mā We revealed anzalnā of mina the clear proofs l-bayināti and the Guidance wal-hudā from min after baʿdi [what] mā We made clear bayyannāhu to the people lilnnāsi in fī the Book l-kitābi those ulāika curses them yalʿanuhumu Allah l-lahu and curse them wayalʿanuhumu the ones who curse l-lāʿinūna
Indeed, those who conceal what We sent down of clear proofs and guidance after We made it clear for the people in the Scripture - those are cursed by Allāh and cursed by those who curse,1
إِلَّا Except illā those alladhīna who repent[ed] tābū and reform[ed] wa-aṣlaḥū and openly declar[ed] wabayyanū Then those fa-ulāika I will accept repentance atūbu from them ʿalayhim and I (am) wa-anā the Acceptor of Repentance l-tawābu the Most Merciful l-raḥīmu
Except for those who repent and correct themselves and make evident [what they concealed]. Those - I will accept their repentance, and I am the Accepting of Repentance,1 the Merciful.
إِنَّ Indeed inna those who alladhīna disbelieve[d] kafarū and die[d] wamātū while they wahum (were) disbelievers kuffārun those ulāika on them ʿalayhim (is the) curse laʿnatu (of) Allah l-lahi and the Angels wal-malāikati and the mankind wal-nāsi all together ajmaʿīna
Indeed, those who disbelieve and die while they are disbelievers - upon them will be the curse of Allāh and of the angels and the people, all together,
خَـٰلِدِينَ (Will) abide forever khālidīna in it fīhā Not lā will be lightened yukhaffafu for them ʿanhumu the punishment l-ʿadhābu and not walā they hum will be reprieved yunẓarūna
Abiding eternally therein. The punishment will not be lightened for them, nor will they be reprieved.
وَإِلَـٰهُكُمْ And your God wa-ilāhukum (is) God ilāhun one (only) wāḥidun (there is) no lā god ilāha except illā Him huwa the Most Gracious l-raḥmānu the Most Merciful l-raḥīmu
And your god is one God. There is no deity [worthy of worship] except Him, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.
إِنَّ Indeed inna in fī (the) creation khalqi (of) the heavens l-samāwāti and the earth wal-arḍi and alternation wa-ikh'tilāfi of the night al-layli and the day wal-nahāri and the ships wal-ful'ki which allatī sail tajrī in fī the sea l-baḥri with what bimā benefits yanfaʿu [the] people l-nāsa and what wamā (has) sent down anzala Allah l-lahu from mina the sky l-samāi [of] min water māin giving life fa-aḥyā thereby bihi (to) the earth l-arḍa after baʿda its death mawtihā and dispersing wabatha therein fīhā [of] min every kulli moving creature dābbatin and directing wataṣrīfi (of) the winds l-riyāḥi and the clouds wal-saḥābi [the] controlled l-musakhari between bayna the sky l-samāi and the earth wal-arḍi surely (are) Signs laāyātin for a people liqawmin who use their intellect yaʿqilūna
Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alternation of the night and the day, and the [great] ships which sail through the sea with that which benefits people, and what Allāh has sent down from the heavens of rain, giving life thereby to the earth after its lifelessness and dispersing therein every [kind of] moving creature, and [His] directing of the winds and the clouds controlled between the heaven and earth are signs for a people who use reason.
وَمِنَ And among wamina the mankind l-nāsi who man takes yattakhidhu from min besides dūni Allah l-lahi equals andādan They love them yuḥibbūnahum as (they should) love kaḥubbi Allah l-lahi And those who wa-alladhīna believe[d] āmanū (are) stronger ashaddu (in) love ḥubban for Allah lillahi And if walaw would see yarā those who alladhīna wronged ẓalamū when idh they will see yarawna the punishment l-ʿadhāba that anna the power l-quwata (belongs) to Allah lillahi all jamīʿan and [that] wa-anna Allah l-laha (is) severe shadīdu (in) [the] punishment l-ʿadhābi
And [yet], among the people are those who take other than Allāh as equals [to Him]. They love them as they [should] love Allāh. But those who believe are stronger in love for Allāh. And if only they who have wronged would consider [that] when they see the punishment, [they will be certain] that all power belongs to Allāh and that Allāh is severe in punishment.
إِذْ When idh will disown tabarra-a those who alladhīna were followed ittubiʿū [from] mina those who alladhīna followed ittabaʿū and they will see wara-awū the punishment l-ʿadhāba [and] will be cut off wataqaṭṭaʿat for them bihimu the relations l-asbābu
[And they should consider that] when those who have been followed disassociate themselves from those who followed [them], and they [all] see the punishment, and cut off from them are the ties [of relationship],
وَقَالَ And said waqāla those who alladhīna followed ittabaʿū (Only) if law [that] anna for us lanā a return karratan then we will disown fanatabarra-a [from] them min'hum as kamā they disown tabarraū [from] us minnā Thus kadhālika will show them yurīhimu Allah l-lahu their deeds aʿmālahum (as) regrets ḥasarātin for them ʿalayhim And not wamā they hum will come out bikhārijīna from mina the Fire l-nāri
Those who followed will say, "If only we had another turn [at worldly life] so we could disassociate ourselves from them as they have disassociated themselves from us." Thus will Allāh show them their deeds as regrets upon them. And they are never to emerge from the Fire.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O yāayyuhā mankind l-nāsu Eat kulū of what mimmā (is) in fī the earth l-arḍi lawful ḥalālan (and) good ṭayyiban And (do) not walā follow tattabiʿū (the) footsteps (of) khuṭuwāti the Shaitaan l-shayṭāni Indeed, he innahu (is) to you lakum an enemy ʿaduwwun clear mubīnun
O mankind, eat from whatever is on earth [that is] lawful and good and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy.
إِنَّمَا Only innamā he commands you yamurukum to (do) the evil bil-sūi and the shameful wal-faḥshāi and that wa-an you say taqūlū about ʿalā Allah l-lahi what mā not lā you know taʿlamūna
He only orders you to evil and immorality and to say about Allāh what you do not know.
وَإِذَا And when wa-idhā it is said qīla to them lahumu Follow ittabiʿū what mā has revealed anzala Allah l-lahu they said qālū Nay bal we follow nattabiʿu what mā we found alfaynā [on it] ʿalayhi our forefathers (following) ābāanā Even though awalaw [were] kāna their forefathers ābāuhum (did) not lā understand yaʿqilūna anything shayan and not walā were they guided yahtadūna
And when it is said to them, "Follow what Allāh has revealed," they say, "Rather, we will follow that which we found our fathers doing." Even though their fathers understood nothing, nor were they guided?
وَمَثَلُ And (the) example wamathalu (of) those who alladhīna disbelieve[d] kafarū (is) like (the) example kamathali (of) the one who alladhī shouts yanʿiqu at what bimā not lā (does) hear yasmaʿu except illā calls duʿāan and cries wanidāan deaf ṣummun dumb buk'mun (and) blind ʿum'yun [so] they fahum (do) not lā understand yaʿqilūna
The example of those who disbelieve is like that of one who shouts at what hears nothing but calls and cries [i.e., cattle or sheep] - deaf, dumb and blind, so they do not understand.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you yāayyuhā who alladhīna believe[d] āmanū Eat kulū from min (the) good ṭayyibāti (of) what mā We have provided you razaqnākum and be grateful wa-ush'kurū to Allah lillahi if in you kuntum alone iyyāhu worship Him taʿbudūna
O you who have believed, eat from the good [i.e., lawful] things which We have provided for you and be grateful to Allāh if it is [indeed] Him that you worship.
إِنَّمَا Only innamā He has forbidden ḥarrama to you ʿalaykumu the dead animals l-maytata and [the] blood wal-dama and flesh walaḥma (of) swine l-khinzīri and what wamā has been dedicated uhilla [with it] bihi to other than lighayri Allah l-lahi So whoever famani (is) forced by necessity uḍ'ṭurra without ghayra (being) disobedient bāghin and not walā transgressor ʿādin then no falā sin ith'ma on him ʿalayhi Indeed inna Allah l-laha (is) Oft-Forgiving ghafūrun Most Merciful raḥīmun
He has only forbidden to you dead animals,1 blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allāh. But whoever is forced [by necessity], neither desiring [it] nor transgressing [its limit], there is no sin upon him. Indeed, Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.
إِنَّ Indeed inna those who alladhīna conceal yaktumūna what mā (has) revealed anzala Allah (has) l-lahu of mina the Book l-kitābi and they purchase wayashtarūna there with bihi a gain thamanan little qalīlan Those ulāika not mā they eat yakulūna in fī their bellies buṭūnihim except illā the Fire l-nāra And not walā will speak to them yukallimuhumu Allah l-lahu (on the) Day yawma (of) [the] Judgment l-qiyāmati and not walā will He purify them yuzakkīhim and for them walahum (is) a punishment ʿadhābun painful alīmun
Indeed, they who conceal what Allāh has sent down of the Book and exchange it for a small price - those consume not into their bellies except the Fire. And Allāh will not speak to them on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He purify them. And they will have a painful punishment.
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ Those ulāika (are) they who alladhīna purchase[d] ish'tarawū [the] astraying l-ḍalālata for [the] Guidance bil-hudā and [the] punishment wal-ʿadhāba for [the] forgiveness bil-maghfirati So what (is) famā their endurance aṣbarahum on ʿalā the Fire l-nāri
Those are the ones who have exchanged guidance for error and forgiveness for punishment. How patient they are for [i.e., in pursuit of] the Fire!
ذَٰلِكَ That dhālika (is) because bi-anna Allah l-laha revealed nazzala the Book l-kitāba with [the] Truth bil-ḥaqi And indeed wa-inna those alladhīna who differed ikh'talafū in fī the Book l-kitābi (are) surely in lafī schism shiqāqin far baʿīdin
That is [deserved by them] because Allāh has sent down the Book in truth. And indeed, those who differ over the Book are in extreme dissension.
۞ لَّيْسَ It is not laysa [the] righteousness l-bira that an you turn tuwallū your faces wujūhakum towards qibala the east l-mashriqi and the west wal-maghribi [and] but walākinna the righteous[ness] l-bira (is he) who man believes āmana in Allah bil-lahi and the Day wal-yawmi [the] Last l-ākhiri and the Angels wal-malāikati and the Book wal-kitābi and the Prophets wal-nabiyīna and gives waātā the wealth l-māla in ʿalā spite of his love (for it) ḥubbihi (to) those dhawī (of) the near relatives l-qur'bā and the orphans wal-yatāmā and the needy wal-masākīna and (of) wa-ib'na the wayfarer l-sabīli and those who ask wal-sāilīna and in wafī freeing the necks (slaves) l-riqābi and (who) establish wa-aqāma the prayer l-ṣalata and give waātā the zakah l-zakata and those who fulfill wal-mūfūna their covenant biʿahdihim when idhā they make it ʿāhadū and those who are patient wal-ṣābirīna in fī [the] suffering l-basāi and [the] hardship wal-ḍarāi and (the) time waḥīna (of) [the] stress l-basi Those ulāika (are) the ones who alladhīna are true ṣadaqū and those wa-ulāika [they] humu (are) the righteous l-mutaqūna
Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but [true] righteousness is [in] one who believes in Allāh, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets and gives wealth, in spite of love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask [for help], and for freeing slaves; [and who] establishes prayer and gives zakāh; [those who] fulfill their promise when they promise; and [those who] are patient in poverty and hardship and during battle. Those are the ones who have been true, and it is those who are the righteous.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you yāayyuhā who alladhīna believe[d] āmanū Prescribed kutiba for you ʿalaykumu (is) the legal retribution l-qiṣāṣu in fī (the matter of) the murdered l-qatlā the freeman l-ḥuru for the freeman bil-ḥuri and the slave wal-ʿabdu for the slave bil-ʿabdi and the female wal-unthā for the female bil-unthā But whoever faman is pardoned ʿufiya [for it] lahu from min his brother akhīhi anything shayon then follows up fa-ittibāʿun with suitable bil-maʿrūfi [and] payment wa-adāon to him ilayhi with kindness bi-iḥ'sānin That (is) dhālika a concession takhfīfun from min your Lord rabbikum and mercy waraḥmatun Then whoever famani transgresses iʿ'tadā after baʿda that dhālika then for him falahu (is) a punishment ʿadhābun painful alīmun
O you who have believed, prescribed for you is legal retribution for those murdered - the free for the free, the slave for the slave, and the female for the female.1 But whoever overlooks from his brother [i.e., the killer] anything,2 then there should be a suitable follow-up and payment to him [i.e., the deceased's heir or legal representative] with good conduct. This is an alleviation from your Lord and a mercy. But whoever transgresses after that3 will have a painful punishment.
وَلَكُمْ And for you walakum in fī the legal retribution l-qiṣāṣi (is) life ḥayatun O men yāulī (of) understanding l-albābi So that you may laʿallakum (become) righteous tattaqūna
And there is for you in legal retribution [saving of] life, O you [people] of understanding, that you may become righteous.1
كُتِبَ Prescribed kutiba for you ʿalaykum when idhā approaches ḥaḍara any of you aḥadakumu [the] death l-mawtu if in he leaves taraka good khayran (making) the will l-waṣiyatu for the parents lil'wālidayni and the near relatives wal-aqrabīna with due fairness bil-maʿrūfi a duty ḥaqqan on ʿalā the righteous ones l-mutaqīna
Prescribed for you when death approaches [any] one of you if he leaves wealth [is that he should make] a bequest for the parents and near relatives according to what is acceptable - a duty upon the righteous.1
فَمَنۢ Then whoever faman changes it baddalahu after what baʿdamā he (has) heard [it] samiʿahu so only fa-innamā its sin ith'muhu (would be) on ʿalā those who alladhīna alter it yubaddilūnahu Indeed inna Allah al-laha (is) All-Hearing sami'un All-Knowing alimun
Then whoever alters it [i.e., the bequest] after he has heard it - the sin is only upon those who have altered it. Indeed, Allāh is Hearing and Knowing.
فَمَنْ But whoever faman fears khāfa from min (the) testator mūṣin (any) error janafan or aw sin ith'man then reconciles fa-aṣlaḥa between them baynahum then (there is) no falā sin ith'ma on him ʿalayhi Indeed inna Allah l-laha (is) Oft-Forgiving ghafūrun All-Merciful raḥīmun
But if one fears from the bequeather [some] error or sin and corrects that which is between them [i.e., the concerned parties], there is no sin upon him. Indeed, Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you yāayyuhā who alladhīna believe[d] āmanū Is prescribed kutiba for you ʿalaykumu [the] fasting l-ṣiyāmu as kamā was prescribed kutiba to ʿalā those alladhīna from min before you qablikum so that you may laʿallakum (become) righteous tattaqūna
O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous -
أَيَّامًۭا (Fasting for) days ayyāman numbered maʿdūdātin So whoever faman is kāna among you minkum sick marīḍan or aw on ʿalā a journey safarin then a prescribed number faʿiddatun of min days ayyāmin other ukhara And on waʿalā those who alladhīna can afford it yuṭīqūnahu a ransom fid'yatun (of) feeding ṭaʿāmu a poor mis'kīnin And whoever faman volunteers taṭawwaʿa good khayran then it fahuwa (is) better khayrun for him lahu And to wa-an fast taṣūmū (is) better khayrun for you lakum if in you kuntum know taʿlamūna
[Fasting for] a limited number of days. So whoever among you is ill or on a journey [during them] - then an equal number of other days [are to be made up]. And upon those who are able [to fast, but with hardship] - a ransom [as substitute] of feeding a poor person [each day]. And whoever volunteers good [i.e., excess] - it is better for him. But to fast is best for you, if you only knew.
شَهْرُ Month shahru (of) Ramadhaan ramaḍāna (is) that alladhī was revealed unzila therein fīhi the Quran l-qur'ānu a Guidance hudan for mankind lilnnāsi and clear proofs wabayyinātin of mina [the] Guidance l-hudā and the Criterion wal-fur'qāni So whoever faman witnesses shahida among you minkumu the month l-shahra then he should fast in it falyaṣum'hu and whoever waman is kāna sick marīḍan or aw on ʿalā a journey safarin then prescribed number (should be made up) faʿiddatun from min days ayyāmin other ukhara Intends yurīdu Allah l-lahu for you bikumu [the] ease l-yus'ra and not walā intends yurīdu for you bikumu [the] hardship l-ʿus'ra so that you complete walituk'milū the prescribed period l-ʿidata and that you magnify walitukabbirū Allah l-laha for ʿalā [what] mā He guided you hadākum so that you may walaʿallakum (be) grateful tashkurūna
The month of Ramaḍān [is that] in which was revealed the Qur’ān, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So whoever sights [the crescent of] the month,1 let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey - then an equal number of other days. Allāh intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship and [wants] for you to complete the period and to glorify Allāh for that [to] which He has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful.
وَإِذَا And when wa-idhā ask you sa-alaka My servants ʿibādī about Me ʿannī then indeed I am fa-innī near qarībun I respond ujību (to the) invocation daʿwata (of) the supplicant l-dāʿi when idhā he calls Me daʿāni So let them respond falyastajībū to Me lī and let them believe walyu'minū in Me bī so that they may laʿallahum (be) led aright yarshudūna
And when My servants ask you, [O Muḥammad], concerning Me - indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me [by obedience] and believe in Me that they may be [rightly] guided.
أُحِلَّ Permitted uḥilla for you lakum (in the) nights laylata (of) fasting l-ṣiyāmi (is) the approach l-rafathu to ilā your wives nisāikum They hunna (are) garments libāsun for you lakum and you wa-antum (are) garments libāsun for them lahunna Knows ʿalima Allah l-lahu that you annakum used to kuntum deceive takhtānūna yourselves anfusakum so He turned fatāba towards you ʿalaykum and He forgave waʿafā [on] you ʿankum So now fal-āna have relations with them bāshirūhunna and seek wa-ib'taghū what mā has ordained kataba Allah l-lahu for you lakum And eat wakulū and drink wa-ish'rabū until ḥattā becomes distinct yatabayyana to you lakumu the thread l-khayṭu [the] white l-abyaḍu from mina the thread l-khayṭi [the] black l-aswadi of mina [the] dawn l-fajri Then thumma complete atimmū the fast l-ṣiyāma till ilā the night al-layli And (do) not walā have relations with them tubāshirūhunna while you wa-antum (are) secluded ʿākifūna in fī the masajid l-masājidi These til'ka (are the) limits ḥudūdu (set by) Allah l-lahi so (do) not falā approach them taqrabūhā Thus kadhālika makes clear yubayyinu Allah l-lahu His verses āyātihi for [the] people lilnnāsi so that they may laʿallahum (become) righteous yattaqūna
It has been made permissible for you the night preceding fasting to go to your wives [for sexual relations]. They are a clothing for you and you are a clothing1 for them. Allāh knows that you used to deceive yourselves,2 so He accepted your repentance and forgave you. So now, have relations with them and seek that which Allāh has decreed for you [i.e., offspring]. And eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread [of night]. Then complete the fast until the night [i.e., sunset]. And do not have relations with them as long as you are staying for worship in the mosques. These are the limits [set by] Allāh, so do not approach them. Thus does Allāh make clear His verses [i.e., ordinances] to the people that they may become righteous.
وَلَا And (do) not walā eat takulū your properties amwālakum among yourselves baynakum wrongfully bil-bāṭili and present watud'lū [with] it bihā to ilā the authorities l-ḥukāmi so that you may eat litakulū a portion farīqan from min (the) wealth amwāli (of) the people l-nāsi sinfully bil-ith'mi while you wa-antum know taʿlamūna
And do not consume one another's wealth unjustly or send it [in bribery] to the rulers in order that [they might aid] you [to] consume a portion of the wealth of the people in sin, while you know [it is unlawful].
۞ يَسْـَٔلُونَكَ They ask you yasalūnaka about ʿani the new moons l-ahilati Say qul They hiya (are) indicators of periods mawāqītu for the people lilnnāsi and (for) the Hajj wal-ḥaji And it is not walaysa [the] righteousness l-biru that bi-an you come tatū (to) the houses l-buyūta from min their backs ẓuhūrihā [and] but walākinna [the] righteous l-bira (is one) who mani fears (Allah) ittaqā And come watū (to) the houses l-buyūta from min their doors abwābihā And fear wa-ittaqū Allah l-laha so that you may laʿallakum (be) successful tuf'liḥūna
They ask you, [O Muḥammad], about the crescent moons. Say, "They are measurements of time for the people and for ḥajj [pilgrimage]." And it is not righteousness to enter houses from the back, but righteousness is [in] one who fears Allāh. And enter houses from their doors. And fear Allāh that you may succeed.
وَقَـٰتِلُوا۟ And fight waqātilū in fī (the) way sabīli (of) Allah l-lahi those who alladhīna fight you yuqātilūnakum and (do) not walā transgress taʿtadū Indeed inna Allah l-laha (does) not lā like yuḥibbu the transgressors l-muʿ'tadīna
Fight in the way of Allāh those who fight against you but do not transgress. Indeed, Allāh does not like transgressors.
وَٱقْتُلُوهُمْ And kill them wa-uq'tulūhum wherever ḥaythu you find them thaqif'tumūhum and drive them out wa-akhrijūhum from min wherever ḥaythu they drove you out akhrajūkum and [the] oppression wal-fit'natu (is) worse ashaddu than mina [the] killing l-qatli And (do) not walā fight them tuqātilūhum near ʿinda Al-Masjid l-masjidi Al-Haraam l-ḥarāmi until ḥattā they fight you yuqātilūkum in it fīhi Then if fa-in they fight you qātalūkum then kill them fa-uq'tulūhum Such kadhālika (is the) reward jazāu (of) the disbelievers l-kāfirīna
And kill them [in battle] wherever you overtake them and expel them from wherever they have expelled you, and fitnah1 is worse than killing. And do not fight them at al-Masjid al-Ḥarām until they fight you there. But if they fight you, then kill them. Such is the recompense of the disbelievers.
فَإِنِ Then if fa-ini they cease intahaw then indeed fa-inna Allah l-laha (is) Oft-Forgiving ghafūrun Most Merciful raḥīmun
And if they cease, then indeed, Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.
وَقَـٰتِلُوهُمْ And fight (against) them waqātilūhum until ḥattā not lā (there) is takūna oppression fit'natun and becomes wayakūna the religion l-dīnu for Allah lillahi Then if fa-ini they cease intahaw then (let there be) no falā hostility ʿud'wāna except illā against ʿalā the oppressors l-ẓālimīna
Fight them until there is no [more] fitnah and [until] religion [i.e., worship] is [acknowledged to be] for Allāh. But if they cease, then there is to be no aggression [i.e., assault] except against the oppressors.
ٱلشَّهْرُ The month al-shahru [the] sacred l-ḥarāmu (is) for the month bil-shahri [the] sacred l-ḥarāmi and for all the violations wal-ḥurumātu (is) legal retribution qiṣāṣun Then whoever famani transgressed iʿ'tadā upon you ʿalaykum then you transgress fa-iʿ'tadū on him ʿalayhi in (the) same manner bimith'li (as) mā he transgressed iʿ'tadā upon you ʿalaykum And fear wa-ittaqū Allah l-laha and know wa-iʿ'lamū that anna Allah l-laha (is) with maʿa those who fear (Him) l-mutaqīna
[Battle in] the sacred month is for [aggression committed in] the sacred month,1 and for [all] violations is legal retribution. So whoever has assaulted you, then assault him in the same way that he has assaulted you. And fear Allāh and know that Allāh is with those who fear Him.
وَأَنفِقُوا۟ And spend wa-anfiqū in fī (the) way sabīli (of) Allah l-lahi and (do) not walā throw (yourselves) tul'qū [with your hands] bi-aydīkum into ilā [the] destruction l-tahlukati And do good wa-aḥsinū indeed inna Allah l-laha loves yuḥibbu the good-doers l-muḥ'sinīna
And spend in the way of Allāh and do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction [by refraining]. And do good; indeed, Allāh loves the doers of good.
وَأَتِمُّوا۟ And complete wa-atimmū the Hajj l-ḥaja and the Umrah wal-ʿum'rata for Allah lillahi And if fa-in you are held back uḥ'ṣir'tum then (offer) whatever famā (can be) obtained with ease is'taysara of mina the sacrificial animal l-hadyi And (do) not walā shave taḥliqū your heads ruūsakum until ḥattā reaches yablugha the sacrificial animal l-hadyu (to) its destination maḥillahu Then whoever faman is kāna among you minkum ill marīḍan or aw he (has) bihi an ailment adhan of min his head rasihi then a ransom fafid'yatun of min fasting ṣiyāmin or aw charity ṣadaqatin or aw sacrifice nusukin Then when fa-idhā you are secure amintum then whoever faman took advantage tamattaʿa of the Umrah bil-ʿum'rati followed ilā (by) the Hajj l-ḥaji then (offer) whatever famā (can be) obtained with ease is'taysara of mina the sacrificial animal l-hadyi But whoever faman (can) not lam find yajid then a fast faṣiyāmu (of) three thalāthati days ayyāmin during fī the Hajj l-ḥaji and seven (days) wasabʿatin when idhā you return rajaʿtum This til'ka (is) ten (days) ʿasharatun in all kāmilatun That dhālika (is) for (the one) whose liman not lam is yakun his family ahluhu present ḥāḍirī (near) Al-Masjid l-masjidi Al-Haraam l-ḥarāmi And fear wa-ittaqū Allah l-laha and know wa-iʿ'lamū that anna Allah l-laha (is) severe shadīdu (in) retribution l-ʿiqābi
And complete the ḥajj and ʿumrah for Allāh. But if you are prevented, then [offer] what can be obtained with ease of sacrificial animals. And do not shave your heads until the sacrificial animal has reached its place of slaughter. And whoever among you is ill or has an ailment of the head [making shaving necessary must offer] a ransom of fasting [three days] or charity1 or sacrifice.2 And when you are secure,3 then whoever performs ʿumrah [during the ḥajj months]4 followed by ḥajj [offers] what can be obtained with ease of sacrificial animals. And whoever cannot find [or afford such an animal] - then a fast of three days during ḥajj and of seven when you have returned [home]. Those are ten complete [days]. This is for those whose family is not in the area of al-Masjid al-Ḥarām. And fear Allāh and know that Allāh is severe in penalty.
ٱلْحَجُّ (For) the Hajj al-ḥaju (are) months ashhurun well known maʿlūmātun then whoever faman undertakes faraḍa therein fīhinna the Hajj l-ḥaja then no falā sexual relations rafatha and no walā wickedness fusūqa and no walā quarrelling jidāla during fī the Hajj l-ḥaji And whatever wamā you do tafʿalū of min good khayrin knows it yaʿlamhu Allah l-lahu And take provision watazawwadū (but) indeed fa-inna (the) best khayra provision l-zādi (is) righteousness l-taqwā And fear Me wa-ittaqūni O men yāulī (of) understanding l-albābi
Ḥajj is [during] well-known months,1 so whoever has made ḥajj obligatory upon himself therein [by entering the state of iḥrām], there is [to be for him] no sexual relations and no disobedience and no disputing during ḥajj. And whatever good you do - Allāh knows it. And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is fear of Allāh. And fear Me, O you of understanding.
لَيْسَ Not is laysa on you ʿalaykum any sin junāḥun that an you seek tabtaghū bounty faḍlan from min your Lord rabbikum And when fa-idhā you depart afaḍtum from min (Mount) Arafat ʿarafātin then remember fa-udh'kurū Allah l-laha near ʿinda the Monument l-mashʿari [the] Sacred l-ḥarāmi And remember Him wa-udh'kurūhu as kamā He (has) guided you hadākum [and] though wa-in you were kuntum [from] min before [it] qablihi surely among lamina those who went astray l-ḍālīna
There is no blame upon you for seeking bounty1 from your Lord [during ḥajj]. But when you depart from ʿArafāt, remember Allāh at al-Mashʿar al-Ḥarām.2 And remember Him, as He has guided you, for indeed, you were before that among those astray.
ثُمَّ Then thumma depart afīḍū from min wherever ḥaythu depart afāḍa the people l-nāsu and ask forgiveness wa-is'taghfirū (of) Allah l-laha Indeed inna Allah l-laha (is) Oft-Forgiving ghafūrun Most Merciful raḥīmun
Then depart from the place from where [all] the people depart and ask forgiveness of Allāh. Indeed, Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.
فَإِذَا Then when fa-idhā you complete[d] qaḍaytum your acts of worship manāsikakum then remember fa-udh'kurū Allah l-laha as you remember kadhik'rikum your forefathers ābāakum or aw (with) greater ashadda remembrance dhik'ran And from famina the people l-nāsi who man say yaqūlu Our Lord rabbanā Grant us ātinā in fī the world l-dun'yā And not wamā for him lahu in fī the Hereafter l-ākhirati [of] min any share khalāqin
And when you have completed your rites, remember Allāh like your [previous] remembrance of your fathers or with [much] greater remembrance. And among the people is he who says, "Our Lord, give us in this world," and he will have in the Hereafter no share.
وَمِنْهُم And from those wamin'hum who man say yaqūlu Our Lord rabbanā Grant us ātinā in fī the world l-dun'yā good ḥasanatan and in wafī the Hereafter l-ākhirati good ḥasanatan and save us waqinā (from the) punishment ʿadhāba (of) the Fire l-nāri
But among them is he who says, "Our Lord, give us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire."
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ Those ulāika for them lahum (is) a share naṣībun of what mimmā they earned kasabū and Allah wal-lahu (is) swift sarīʿu (in taking) account l-ḥisābi
Those will have a share of what they have earned, and Allāh is swift in account.
۞ وَٱذْكُرُوا۟ And remember wa-udh'kurū Allah l-laha during fī days ayyāmin numbered maʿdūdātin Then (he) who faman hurries taʿajjala in fī two days yawmayni then no falā sin ith'ma upon him ʿalayhi and whoever waman delays ta-akhara then no falā sin ith'ma upon him ʿalayhi for (the one) who limani fears ittaqā And fear wa-ittaqū Allah l-laha and know wa-iʿ'lamū that you annakum unto Him ilayhi will be gathered tuḥ'sharūna
And remember Allāh during [specific] numbered days. Then whoever hastens [his departure] in two days - there is no sin upon him; and whoever delays [until the third] - there is no sin upon him - for him who fears Allāh. And fear Allāh and know that unto Him you will be gathered.
وَمِنَ And of wamina the people l-nāsi (is the one) who man pleases you yuʿ'jibuka (with) his speech qawluhu in fī the life l-ḥayati (of) the world l-dun'yā and he calls to witness wayush'hidu Allah l-laha on ʿalā what mā (is) in fī his heart qalbihi and he wahuwa (is) the most quarrelsome aladdu (of) opponents l-khiṣāmi
And of the people is he whose speech pleases you in worldly life, and he calls Allāh to witness as to what is in his heart, yet he is the fiercest of opponents.
وَإِذَا And when wa-idhā he turns away tawallā he strives saʿā in fī the earth l-arḍi to spread corruption liyuf'sida [in it] fīhā and destroys wayuh'lika the crops l-ḥartha and progeny wal-nasla And Allah wal-lahu (does) not lā love yuḥibbu [the] corruption l-fasāda
And when he goes away, he strives throughout the land to cause corruption therein and destroy crops and animals. And Allāh does not like corruption.
وَإِذَا And when wa-idhā it is said qīla to him lahu Fear ittaqi Allah l-laha takes him akhadhathu (his) pride l-ʿizatu to [the] sins bil-ith'mi Then enough for him faḥasbuhu (is) Hell jahannamu [and] surely an evil walabi'sa [the] resting-place l-mihādu
And when it is said to him, "Fear Allāh," pride in the sin takes hold of him. Sufficient for him is Hellfire, and how wretched is the resting place.
وَمِنَ And of wamina the people l-nāsi (is the one) who man sells yashrī his own self nafsahu seeking ib'tighāa pleasure marḍāti (of) Allah l-lahi And Allah wal-lahu (is) full of Kindness raūfun to His servants bil-ʿibādi
And of the people is he who sells himself, seeking means to the approval of Allāh. And Allāh is Kind to [His] servants.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you yāayyuhā who alladhīna believe[d] āmanū Enter ud'khulū in fī Islam l-sil'mi completely kāffatan and (do) not walā follow tattabiʿū footsteps khuṭuwāti (of) the Shaitaan l-shayṭāni Indeed, he innahu (is) for you lakum an enemy ʿaduwwun open mubīnun
O you who have believed, enter into Islām completely [and perfectly] and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy.
فَإِن Then if fa-in you slip zalaltum from min after baʿdi [what] mā came to you jāatkumu (from) the clear proofs l-bayinātu then know fa-iʿ'lamū that anna Allah l-laha (is) All-Mighty ʿazīzun All-Wise ḥakīmun
But if you slip [i.e., deviate] after clear proofs have come to you, then know that Allāh is Exalted in Might and Wise.
هَلْ Are hal they waiting yanẓurūna [except] illā that an comes to them yatiyahumu Allah l-lahu in fī (the) shadows ẓulalin of mina [the] clouds l-ghamāmi and the Angels wal-malāikatu and is decreed waquḍiya the matter l-amru And to wa-ilā Allah l-lahi return tur'jaʿu (all) the matters l-umūru
Do they await but that Allāh should come to them in covers of clouds and the angels [as well] and the matter is [then] decided? And to Allāh [all] matters are returned.
سَلْ Ask sal (the) Children banī (of) Israel is'rāīla how many kam We gave them ātaynāhum of min (the) Sign(s) āyatin clear bayyinatin And whoever waman changes yubaddil Favor niʿ'mata (of) Allah l-lahi from min after baʿdi [what] mā it (has) come to him jāathu then indeed fa-inna Allah l-laha (is) severe shadīdu in [the] chastising l-ʿiqābi
Ask the Children of Israel how many a sign of evidence We have given them. And whoever exchanges the favor of Allāh [for disbelief] after it has come to him - then indeed, Allāh is severe in penalty.
زُيِّنَ Beautified zuyyina for those who lilladhīna disbelieve[d] kafarū (is) the life l-ḥayatu (of) the world l-dun'yā and they ridicule wayaskharūna [of] mina those who alladhīna believe[d] āmanū And those who wa-alladhīna fear (Allah) ittaqaw (they will be) above them fawqahum (on the) Day yawma (of) Resurrection l-qiyāmati And Allah wal-lahu provides yarzuqu whom man He wills yashāu without bighayri measure ḥisābin
Beautified for those who disbelieve is the life of this world, and they ridicule those who believe. But those who fear Allāh are above them on the Day of Resurrection. And Allāh gives provision to whom He wills without account.
كَانَ Was kāna mankind l-nāsu a community ummatan single wāḥidatan then raised up fabaʿatha Allah l-lahu [the] Prophets l-nabiyīna (as) bearers of glad tidings mubashirīna and (as) warners wamundhirīna and sent down wa-anzala with them maʿahumu the Book l-kitāba in [the] truth bil-ḥaqi to judge liyaḥkuma between bayna [the] people l-nāsi in what fīmā they differed ikh'talafū [in it] fīhi And (did) not wamā differ[ed] ikh'talafa in it fīhi except illā those who alladhīna were given it ūtūhu from min after baʿdi [what] mā came to them jāathumu the clear proofs l-bayinātu (out of) jealousy baghyan among themselves baynahum And guided fahadā Allah l-lahu those who alladhīna believe[d] āmanū regarding what limā they differed ikh'talafū [in it] fīhi of mina the Truth l-ḥaqi with His permission bi-idh'nihi And Allah wal-lahu guides yahdī whom man He wills yashāu to ilā a path ṣirāṭin straight mus'taqīmin
Mankind was [of] one religion [before their deviation]; then Allāh sent the prophets as bringers of good tidings and warners and sent down with them the Scripture in truth to judge between the people concerning that in which they differed. And none differed over it [i.e., the Scripture] except those who were given it - after the clear proofs came to them - out of jealous animosity among themselves. And Allāh guided those who believed to the truth concerning that over which they had differed, by His permission. And Allāh guides whom He wills to a straight path.
أَمْ Or am (do) you think ḥasib'tum that an you will enter tadkhulū Paradise l-janata while not walammā (has) come to you yatikum like (came to) mathalu those who alladhīna passed away khalaw from min before you qablikum Touched them massathumu [the] adversity l-basāu and [the] hardship wal-ḍarāu and they were shaken wazul'zilū until ḥattā said yaqūla the Messenger l-rasūlu and those who wa-alladhīna believed āmanū with him maʿahu When matā [will] (the) help naṣru (of) Allah (come) l-lahi Unquestionably alā [Indeed] inna help naṣra (of) Allah l-lahi (is) near qarībun
Or do you think that you will enter Paradise while such [trial] has not yet come to you as came to those who passed on before you? They were touched by poverty and hardship and were shaken until [even their] messenger and those who believed with him said, "When is the help of Allāh?" Unquestionably, the help of Allāh is near.
يَسْـَٔلُونَكَ They ask you yasalūnaka what mādhā they (should) spend yunfiqūna Say qul Whatever mā you spend anfaqtum of min good khayrin (is) for parents falil'wālidayni and the relatives wal-aqrabīna and the orphans wal-yatāmā and the needy wal-masākīni and (of) wa-ib'ni the wayfarer l-sabīli And whatever wamā you do tafʿalū of min good khayrin So indeed fa-inna Allah l-laha of it bihi (is) All-Aware ʿalīmun
They ask you, [O Muḥammad], what they should spend. Say, "Whatever you spend of good is [to be] for parents and relatives and orphans and the needy and the traveler. And whatever you do of good - indeed, Allāh is Knowing of it."
كُتِبَ Is prescribed kutiba upon you ʿalaykumu [the] fighting l-qitālu while it wahuwa (is) hateful kur'hun to you lakum But perhaps waʿasā [that] an you dislike takrahū a thing shayan and it wahuwa (is) good khayrun for you lakum and perhaps waʿasā [that] an you love tuḥibbū a thing shayan and it wahuwa (is) bad sharrun for you lakum And Allah wal-lahu knows yaʿlamu while you wa-antum (do) not lā know taʿlamūna
Battle has been enjoined upon you while it is hateful to you. But perhaps you hate a thing and it is good for you; and perhaps you love a thing and it is bad for you. And Allāh knows, while you know not.
يَسْـَٔلُونَكَ They ask you yasalūnaka about ʿani the month l-shahri [the] sacred l-ḥarāmi (concerning) fighting qitālin in it fīhi Say qul Fighting qitālun therein fīhi (is) a great (sin) kabīrun but hindering (people) waṣaddun from ʿan (the) way sabīli (of) Allah l-lahi and disbelief wakuf'run in Him bihi and (preventing access to) Al-Masjid wal-masjidi Al-Haraam l-ḥarāmi and driving out wa-ikh'rāju its people ahlihi from it min'hu (is) greater (sin) akbaru near ʿinda Allah l-lahi And [the] oppression wal-fit'natu (is) greater akbaru than mina [the] killing l-qatli And not walā they will cease yazālūna (to) fight with you yuqātilūnakum until ḥattā they turn you away yaruddūkum from ʿan your religion dīnikum if ini they are able is'taṭāʿū And whoever waman turns away yartadid among you minkum from ʿan his religion dīnihi then dies fayamut while he wahuwa (is) a disbeliever kāfirun for those fa-ulāika became worthless ḥabiṭat their deeds aʿmāluhum in fī the world l-dun'yā and the Hereafter wal-ākhirati And those wa-ulāika (are) companions aṣḥābu (of) the Fire l-nāri they hum in it fīhā (will) abide forever khālidūna
They ask you about the sacred month1 - about fighting therein. Say, "Fighting therein is great [sin], but averting [people] from the way of Allāh and disbelief in Him and [preventing access to] al-Masjid al-Ḥarām and the expulsion of its people therefrom are greater [evil] in the sight of Allāh. And fitnah2 is greater than killing." And they will continue to fight you until they turn you back from your religion if they are able. And whoever of you reverts from his religion [to disbelief] and dies while he is a disbeliever - for those, their deeds have become worthless in this world and the Hereafter, and those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide therein eternally.
إِنَّ Indeed inna those who alladhīna believed āmanū and those who wa-alladhīna emigrated hājarū and strove wajāhadū in fī (the) way sabīli (of) Allah l-lahi those ulāika they hope yarjūna (for) Mercy raḥmata (of) Allah l-lahi And Allah wal-lahu (is) Oft-Forgiving ghafūrun Most Merciful raḥīmun
Indeed, those who have believed and those who have emigrated and fought in the cause of Allāh - those expect the mercy of Allāh. And Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.
۞ يَسْـَٔلُونَكَ They ask you yasalūnaka about ʿani [the] intoxicants l-khamri and [the] games of chance wal-maysiri Say qul In both of them fīhimā (is) a sin ith'mun great kabīrun and (some) benefits wamanāfiʿu for [the] people lilnnāsi But sin of both of them wa-ith'muhumā (is) greater akbaru than min (the) benefit of (the) two nafʿihimā And they ask you wayasalūnaka what mādhā they (should) spend yunfiqūna Say quli The surplus l-ʿafwa Thus kadhālika makes clear yubayyinu Allah l-lahu to you lakumu [the] Verses l-āyāti so that you may laʿallakum ponder tatafakkarūna
They ask you about wine1 and gambling. Say, "In them is great sin and [yet, some] benefit for people. But their sin is greater than their benefit." And they ask you what they should spend. Say, "The excess [beyond needs]." Thus Allāh makes clear to you the verses [of revelation] that you might give thought
فِى Concerning fī the world l-dun'yā and the Hereafter wal-ākhirati They ask you wayasalūnaka about ʿani the orphans l-yatāmā Say qul Setting right (their affairs) iṣ'lāḥun for them lahum (is) best khayrun And if wa-in you associate with them tukhāliṭūhum then they (are) your brothers fa-ikh'wānukum And Allah wal-lahu knows yaʿlamu the corrupter l-muf'sida from mina the amender l-muṣ'liḥi And if walaw (had) willed shāa Allah l-lahu surely He (could have) put you in difficulties la-aʿnatakum Indeed inna Allah l-laha (is) All-Mighty ʿazīzun All-Wise ḥakīmun
To this world and the Hereafter. And they ask you about orphans. Say, "Improvement for them is best. And if you mix your affairs with theirs - they are your brothers. And Allāh knows the corrupter from the amender. And if Allāh had willed, He could have put you in difficulty. Indeed, Allāh is Exalted in Might and Wise."
وَلَا And (do) not walā [you] marry tankiḥū [the] polytheistic women l-mush'rikāti until ḥattā they believe yu'minna And a bondwoman wala-amatun (who is) believing mu'minatun (is) better khayrun than min a polytheistic woman mush'rikatin [and] even if walaw she pleases you aʿjabatkum And (do) not walā give in marriage (your women) tunkiḥū (to) [the] polytheistic men l-mush'rikīna until ḥattā they believe yu'minū and a bondman walaʿabdun (who is) believing mu'minun (is) better khayrun than min a polytheistic man mush'rikin [and] even if walaw he pleases you aʿjabakum [Those] ulāika they invite yadʿūna to ilā the Fire l-nāri and Allah wal-lahu invites yadʿū to ilā Paradise l-janati and [the] forgiveness wal-maghfirati by His permission bi-idh'nihi And He makes clear wayubayyinu His Verses āyātihi for the people lilnnāsi so that they may laʿallahum take heed yatadhakkarūna
And do not marry polytheistic women until they believe.1 And a believing slave woman is better than a polytheist, even though she might please you. And do not marry polytheistic men [to your women] until they believe. And a believing slave is better than a polytheist, even though he might please you. Those invite [you] to the Fire, but Allāh invites to Paradise and to forgiveness, by His permission. And He makes clear His verses [i.e., ordinances] to the people that perhaps they may remember.
وَيَسْـَٔلُونَكَ And they ask you wayasalūnaka about ʿani [the] menstruation l-maḥīḍi Say qul It huwa (is) a hurt adhan so keep away (from) fa-iʿ'tazilū [the] women l-nisāa during fī (their) [the] menstruation l-maḥīḍi And (do) not walā approach them taqrabūhunna until ḥattā they are cleansed yaṭhur'na Then when fa-idhā they are purified taṭahharna then come to them fatūhunna from min where ḥaythu has ordered you amarakumu Allah l-lahu Indeed inna Allah l-laha loves yuḥibbu those who turn in repentance l-tawābīna and loves wayuḥibbu those who purify themselves l-mutaṭahirīna
And they ask you about menstruation. Say, "It is harm, so keep away from wives1 during menstruation. And do not approach them until they are pure. And when they have purified themselves,2 then come to them from where Allāh has ordained for you. Indeed, Allāh loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those who purify themselves."
نِسَآؤُكُمْ Your wives nisāukum (are) a tilth ḥarthun for you lakum so come fatū (to) your tilth ḥarthakum when annā you wish shi'tum and send forth (good deeds) waqaddimū for yourselves li-anfusikum And be conscious wa-ittaqū (of) Allah l-laha and know wa-iʿ'lamū that you annakum (will) meet Him mulāqūhu And give glad tidings wabashiri (to) the believers l-mu'minīna
Your wives are a place of cultivation [i.e., sowing of seed] for you, so come to your place of cultivation however you wish and put forth [righteousness] for yourselves. And fear Allāh and know that you will meet Him. And give good tidings to the believers.
وَلَا And (do) not walā make tajʿalū Allah's (name) l-laha an excuse ʿur'ḍatan in your oaths li-aymānikum that an you do good tabarrū and be righteous watattaqū and make peace watuṣ'liḥū between bayna [the] people l-nāsi And Allah wal-lahu (is) All-Hearing samīʿun All-Knowing ʿalīmun
And do not make [your oath by] Allāh an excuse against being righteous and fearing Allāh and making peace among people. And Allāh is Hearing and Knowing.
لَّا Not lā will take you to task yuākhidhukumu Allah l-lahu for (what is) unintentional bil-laghwi in fī your oaths aymānikum [and] but walākin He takes you to task yuākhidhukum for what bimā (have) earned kasabat your hearts qulūbukum And Allah wal-lahu (is) Oft-Forgiving ghafūrun Most Forbearing ḥalīmun
Allāh does not impose blame upon you for what is unintentional in your oaths, but He imposes blame upon you for what your hearts have earned. And Allāh is Forgiving and Forbearing.1
لِّلَّذِينَ For those who lilladhīna swear (off) yu'lūna from min their wives nisāihim (is a) waiting (of) tarabbuṣu four arbaʿati months ashhurin then if fa-in they return fāū then indeed fa-inna Allah l-laha (is) Oft-Forgiving ghafūrun Most Merciful raḥīmun
For those who swear not to have sexual relations with their wives1 is a waiting time of four months, but if they return [to normal relations] - then indeed, Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.
وَإِنْ And if wa-in they resolve ʿazamū (on) [the] divorce l-ṭalāqa then indeed fa-inna Allah l-laha (is) All-Hearing samīʿun All-Knowing ʿalīmun
And if they decide on divorce - then indeed, Allāh is Hearing and Knowing.
وَٱلْمُطَلَّقَـٰتُ And the women who are divorced wal-muṭalaqātu shall wait yatarabbaṣna concerning themselves bi-anfusihinna (for) three thalāthata monthly periods qurūin And (it is) not walā lawful yaḥillu for them lahunna that an they conceal yaktum'na what mā (has been) created khalaqa (by) Allah l-lahu in fī their wombs arḥāmihinna if in they kunna believe yu'minna in Allah bil-lahi and the Day wal-yawmi [the] Last l-ākhiri And their husbands wabuʿūlatuhunna (have) better right aḥaqqu to take them back biraddihinna in fī that (period) dhālika if in they wish arādū (for) reconciliation iṣ'lāḥan And for them walahunna (is the) like mith'lu (of) that which alladhī (is) on them ʿalayhinna in a reasonable manner bil-maʿrūfi and for the men walilrrijāli over them ʿalayhinna (is) a degree darajatun And Allah wal-lahu (is) All-Mighty ʿazīzun All-Wise ḥakīmun
Divorced women remain in waiting [i.e., do not remarry] for three periods,1 and it is not lawful for them to conceal what Allāh has created in their wombs if they believe in Allāh and the Last Day. And their husbands have more right to take them back in this [period] if they want reconciliation.2 And due to them [i.e., the wives] is similar to what is expected of them, according to what is reasonable.3 But the men [i.e., husbands] have a degree over them [in responsibility and authority]. And Allāh is Exalted in Might and Wise.
ٱلطَّلَـٰقُ The divorce al-ṭalāqu (is) twice marratāni Then to retain fa-im'sākun in a reasonable manner bimaʿrūfin or aw to release (her) tasrīḥun with kindness bi-iḥ'sānin And (it is) not walā lawful yaḥillu for you lakum that an you take (back) takhudhū whatever mimmā you have given them ātaytumūhunna anything shayan except illā if an both fear yakhāfā that not allā they both (can) keep yuqīmā (the) limits ḥudūda (of) Allah l-lahi But if fa-in you fear khif'tum that not allā they both (can) keep yuqīmā (the) limits ḥudūda (of) Allah l-lahi then (there is) no falā sin junāḥa on both of them ʿalayhimā in what fīmā she ransoms if'tadat concerning it bihi These til'ka (are the) limits ḥudūdu (of) Allah l-lahi so (do) not falā transgress them taʿtadūhā And whoever waman transgresses yataʿadda (the) limits ḥudūda (of) Allah l-lahi then those fa-ulāika they humu (are) the wrongdoers l-ẓālimūna
Divorce is twice. Then [after that], either keep [her] in an acceptable manner or release [her] with good treatment. And it is not lawful for you to take anything of what you have given them unless both fear that they will not be able to keep [within] the limits of Allāh.1 But if you fear that they will not keep [within] the limits of Allāh, then there is no blame upon either of them concerning that by which she ransoms herself. These are the limits of Allāh, so do not transgress them. And whoever transgresses the limits of Allāh - it is those who are the wrongdoers [i.e., the unjust].
فَإِن Then if fa-in he divorces her ṭallaqahā then (she is) not falā lawful taḥillu for him lahu from min after (that) baʿdu until ḥattā she marries tankiḥa a spouse zawjan other than him ghayrahu Then if fa-in he divorces her ṭallaqahā then no falā sin junāḥa on them ʿalayhimā if an they return to each other yatarājaʿā if in they believe ẓannā that an they (will be able to) keep yuqīmā (the) limits ḥudūda (of) Allah l-lahi And these watil'ka (are the) limits ḥudūdu (of) Allah l-lahi He makes them clear yubayyinuhā to a people liqawmin who know yaʿlamūna
And if he has divorced her [for the third time], then she is not lawful to him afterward until [after] she marries a husband other than him.1 And if he [i.e., the latter husband] divorces her [or dies], there is no blame upon them [i.e., the woman and her former husband] for returning to each other if they think that they can keep [within] the limits of Allāh. These are the limits of Allāh, which He makes clear to a people who know [i.e.,understand].
وَإِذَا And when wa-idhā you divorce ṭallaqtumu the women l-nisāa and they reach fabalaghna their (waiting) term ajalahunna then retain them fa-amsikūhunna in a fair manner bimaʿrūfin or aw release them sarriḥūhunna in a fair manner bimaʿrūfin And (do) not walā retain them tum'sikūhunna (to) hurt ḍirāran so that you transgress litaʿtadū And whoever waman does yafʿal that dhālika then indeed faqad he wronged ẓalama himself nafsahu And (do) not walā take tattakhidhū (the) Verses āyāti (of) Allah l-lahi (in) jest huzuwan and remember wa-udh'kurū (the) Favors niʿ'mata (of) Allah l-lahi upon you ʿalaykum and what wamā (is) revealed anzala to you ʿalaykum of mina the Book l-kitābi and [the] wisdom wal-ḥik'mati He instructs you yaʿiẓukum with it bihi And fear wa-ittaqū Allah l-laha and know wa-iʿ'lamū that anna Allah (is) l-laha of every bikulli thing shayin All-Knower ʿalīmun
And when you divorce women and they have [nearly] fulfilled their term, either retain them according to acceptable terms or release them according to acceptable terms, and do not keep them, intending harm, to transgress [against them]. And whoever does that has certainly wronged himself. And do not take the verses of Allāh in jest. And remember the favor of Allāh upon you and what has been revealed to you of the Book [i.e., the Qur’ān] and wisdom [i.e., the Prophet's sunnah] by which He instructs you. And fear Allāh and know that Allāh is Knowing of all things.
وَإِذَا And when wa-idhā you divorce ṭallaqtumu [the] women l-nisāa and they reached fabalaghna their (waiting) term ajalahunna then (do) not falā hinder them taʿḍulūhunna [that] an (from) marrying yankiḥ'na their husbands azwājahunna when idhā they agree tarāḍaw between themselves baynahum in a fair manner bil-maʿrūfi That dhālika is admonished yūʿaẓu with it bihi whoever man [is] kāna among you minkum believes yu'minu in Allah bil-lahi and the Day wal-yawmi [the] Last l-ākhiri that dhālikum (is) more virtuous azkā for you lakum and more purer wa-aṭharu And Allah wal-lahu knows yaʿlamu and you wa-antum (do) not lā know taʿlamūna
And when you divorce women1 and they have fulfilled their term, do not prevent them from remarrying their [former] husbands if they [i.e., all parties] agree among themselves on an acceptable basis. That is instructed to whoever of you believes in Allāh and the Last Day. That is better for you and purer, and Allāh knows and you know not.
۞ وَٱلْوَٰلِدَٰتُ And the mothers wal-wālidātu shall suckle yur'ḍiʿ'na their children awlādahunna (for) two years ḥawlayni complete kāmilayni for whoever liman wishes arāda to an complete yutimma the suckling l-raḍāʿata And upon waʿalā the father l-mawlūdi (on) him lahu (is) their provision riz'quhunna and their clothing wakis'watuhunna in a fair manner bil-maʿrūfi Not lā is burdened tukallafu any soul nafsun except illā its capacity wus'ʿahā Not lā made to suffer tuḍārra (the) mother wālidatun because of her child biwaladihā and not walā (the) father mawlūdun (be) lahu because of his child biwaladihi And on waʿalā the (father's) heir l-wārithi (is a duty) like mith'lu that (of the father) dhālika Then if fa-in they both desire arādā weaning fiṣālan through ʿan mutual consent tarāḍin of both of them min'humā and consultation watashāwurin then no falā blame junāḥa on both of them ʿalayhimā And if wa-in you want aradttum to an ask another women to suckle tastarḍiʿū your child awlādakum then (there is) no falā blame junāḥa on you ʿalaykum when idhā you pay sallamtum what mā you give ātaytum in a fair manner bil-maʿrūfi And fear wa-ittaqū Allah l-laha and know wa-iʿ'lamū that anna Allah l-laha of what bimā you do taʿmalūna (is) All-Seer baṣīrun
Mothers may nurse [i.e., breastfeed] their children two complete years for whoever wishes to complete the nursing [period]. Upon the father is their [i.e., the mothers'] provision and their clothing according to what is acceptable. No person is charged with more than his capacity. No mother should be harmed through her child, and no father through his child. And upon the [father's] heir is [a duty] like that [of the father]. And if they both desire weaning through mutual consent from both of them and consultation, there is no blame upon either of them. And if you wish to have your children nursed by a substitute, there is no blame upon you as long as you give payment according to what is acceptable. And fear Allāh and know that Allāh is Seeing of what you do.
وَٱلَّذِينَ And those who wa-alladhīna pass away yutawaffawna among you minkum and leave behind wayadharūna wives azwājan (the widows) should wait yatarabbaṣna for themselves bi-anfusihinna (for) four arbaʿata months ashhurin and ten (days) waʿashran Then when fa-idhā they reach balaghna their (specified) term ajalahunna then (there is) no falā blame junāḥa upon you ʿalaykum for what fīmā they do faʿalna concerning fī themselves anfusihinna in a fair manner bil-maʿrūfi And Allah wal-lahu of what bimā you do taʿmalūna (is) All-Aware khabīrun
And those who are taken in death among you and leave wives behind - they, [the wives, shall] wait four months and ten [days]. And when they have fulfilled their term, then there is no blame upon you for what they do with themselves in an acceptable manner.1 And Allāh is [fully] Aware of what you do.
وَلَا And (there is) no walā blame junāḥa upon you ʿalaykum in what fīmā you hint ʿarraḍtum [with it] bihi of min marriage proposal khiṭ'bati [to] the women l-nisāi or aw you conceal it aknantum in fī yourselves anfusikum Knows ʿalima Allah l-lahu that you annakum will mention them satadhkurūnahunna [and] but walākin (do) not lā promise them (widows) tuwāʿidūhunna secretly sirran except illā that an you say taqūlū a saying qawlan honorable maʿrūfan And (do) not walā resolve (on) taʿzimū the knot ʿuq'data (of) marriage l-nikāḥi until ḥattā reaches yablugha the prescribed term l-kitābu its end ajalahu And know wa-iʿ'lamū that anna Allah l-laha knows yaʿlamu what mā (is) within fī yourselves anfusikum so beware of Him fa-iḥ'dharūhu And know wa-iʿ'lamū that anna Allah l-laha (is) Oft-Forgiving ghafūrun Most Forbearing ḥalīmun
There is no blame upon you for that to which you [indirectly] allude concerning a proposal to women or for what you conceal within yourselves. Allāh knows that you will have them in mind. But do not promise them secretly except for saying a proper saying. And do not determine to undertake a marriage contract until the decreed period1 reaches its end. And know that Allāh knows what is within yourselves, so beware of Him. And know that Allāh is Forgiving and Forbearing.
لَّا (There is) no lā blame junāḥa upon you ʿalaykum if in you divorce ṭallaqtumu [the] women l-nisāa whom mā not lam you have touched tamassūhunna nor aw you specified tafriḍū for them lahunna an obligation (dower) farīḍatan And make provision for them wamattiʿūhunna upon ʿalā the wealthy l-mūsiʿi according to his means qadaruhu and upon waʿalā the poor l-muq'tiri according to his means qadaruhu a provision matāʿan in a fair manner bil-maʿrūfi a duty ḥaqqan upon ʿalā the good-doers l-muḥ'sinīna
There is no blame upon you if you divorce women you have not touched1 nor specified for them an obligation.2 But give them [a gift of] compensation - the wealthy according to his capability and the poor according to his capability - a provision according to what is acceptable, a duty upon the doers of good.
وَإِن And if wa-in you divorce them ṭallaqtumūhunna from min before qabli [that] an you (have) touched them tamassūhunna while already waqad you have specified faraḍtum for them lahunna an obligation (dower) farīḍatan then (give) half faniṣ'fu (of) what mā you have specified faraḍtum unless illā [that] an they (women) forgo (it) yaʿfūna or aw forgoes yaʿfuwā the one alladhī in whose hands biyadihi (is the) knot ʿuq'datu (of) the marriage l-nikāḥi And that wa-an you forgo taʿfū (is) nearer aqrabu to [the] righteousness lilttaqwā And (do) not walā forget tansawū the graciousness l-faḍla among you baynakum Indeed inna Allah l-laha of what bimā you do taʿmalūna (is) All-Seer baṣīrun
And if you divorce them before you have touched them and you have already specified for them an obligation, then [give] half of what you specified - unless they forego the right or the one in whose hand is the marriage contract foregoes it. And to forego it is nearer to righteousness. And do not forget graciousness between you. Indeed Allāh, of whatever you do, is Seeing.
حَـٰفِظُوا۟ Guard strictly ḥāfiẓū [on] ʿalā the prayers l-ṣalawāti and the prayer wal-ṣalati [the] middle l-wus'ṭā and stand up waqūmū for Allah lillahi devoutly obedient qānitīna
Maintain with care the [obligatory] prayers and [in particular] the middle [i.e., ʿaṣr] prayer and stand before Allāh, devoutly obedient.
فَإِنْ And if fa-in you fear khif'tum then (pray) on foot farijālan or aw riding ruk'bānan Then when fa-idhā you are secure amintum then remember fa-udh'kurū Allah l-laha as kamā He (has) taught you ʿallamakum what mā not lam you were takūnū knowing taʿlamūna
And if you fear [an enemy, then pray] on foot or riding. But when you are secure, then remember Allāh [in prayer], as He has taught you that which you did not [previously] know.
وَٱلَّذِينَ And those who wa-alladhīna die yutawaffawna among you minkum and leave behind wayadharūna (their) wives azwājan (should make) a will waṣiyyatan for their wives li-azwājihim provision matāʿan for ilā the year l-ḥawli without ghayra driving (them) out ikh'rājin But if fa-in they leave kharajna then no falā blame junāḥa upon you ʿalaykum in fī what mā they do faʿalna concerning fī themselves anfusihinna [of] min honorably maʿrūfin And Allah wal-lahu (is) All-Mighty ʿazīzun All-Wise ḥakīmun
And those who are taken in death among you and leave wives behind - for their wives is a bequest: maintenance for one year without turning [them] out. But if they leave [of their own accord], then there is no blame upon you for what they do with themselves in an acceptable way.1 And Allāh is Exalted in Might and Wise.
وَلِلْمُطَلَّقَـٰتِ And for the divorced women walil'muṭallaqāti (is) a provision matāʿun in a fair manner bil-maʿrūfi a duty ḥaqqan upon ʿalā the righteous l-mutaqīna
And for divorced women is a provision according to what is acceptable - a duty upon the righteous.
كَذَٰلِكَ Thus kadhālika makes clear yubayyinu Allah l-lahu for you lakum His Verses āyātihi so that you may laʿallakum use your intellect taʿqilūna
Thus does Allāh make clear to you His verses [i.e., laws] that you might use reason.
۞ أَلَمْ Did not alam you see tara [to] ilā those who alladhīna went out kharajū from min their homes diyārihim and they wahum (were in) thousands ulūfun (in) fear ḥadhara (of) [the] death l-mawti Then said faqāla to them lahumu Allah l-lahu Die mūtū then thumma He restored them to life aḥyāhum Indeed inna Allah l-laha (is) surely Possessor ladhū (of) bounty faḍlin for ʿalā [the] mankind l-nāsi [and] but walākinna most akthara (of) the people l-nāsi (are) not lā grateful yashkurūna
Have you not considered those who left their homes in many thousands, fearing death? Allāh said to them, "Die"; then He restored them to life. And Allāh is the possessor of bounty for the people, but most of the people do not show gratitude.
وَقَـٰتِلُوا۟ And fight waqātilū in fī (the) way sabīli (of) Allah l-lahi and know wa-iʿ'lamū that anna Allah l-laha (is) All-Hearing samīʿun All-Knowing ʿalīmun
And fight in the cause of Allāh and know that Allāh is Hearing and Knowing.
مَّن Who man (is) the one dhā who alladhī will lend yuq'riḍu (to) Allah l-laha a loan qarḍan good ḥasanan so (that) He multiplies it fayuḍāʿifahu for him lahu manifolds aḍʿāfan many kathīratan And Allah wal-lahu withholds yaqbiḍu and grants abundance wayabṣuṭu and to Him wa-ilayhi you will be returned tur'jaʿūna
Who is it that would loan Allāh a goodly loan so He may multiply it for him many times over? And it is Allāh who withholds and grants abundance, and to Him you will be returned.
أَلَمْ Did not alam you see tara [towards] ilā the chiefs l-mala-i of min (the) Children banī (of) Israel is'rāīla from min after baʿdi Musa mūsā when idh they said qālū to a Prophet linabiyyin of theirs lahumu Appoint ib'ʿath for us lanā a king malikan we may fight nuqātil in fī (the) way sabīli (of) Allah l-lahi He said qāla Would hal you perhaps ʿasaytum if in prescribed kutiba upon you ʿalaykumu [the] fighting l-qitālu that not allā you fight tuqātilū They said qālū And what wamā for us lanā that not allā we fight nuqātila in fī (the) way sabīli (of) Allah l-lahi while surely waqad we have been driven ukh'rij'nā from min our homes diyārinā and our children wa-abnāinā Yet, when falammā was prescribed kutiba upon them ʿalayhimu the fighting l-qitālu they turned away tawallaw except illā a few qalīlan among them min'hum And Allah wal-lahu (is) All-Knowing ʿalīmun of the wrongdoers bil-ẓālimīna
Have you not considered the assembly of the Children of Israel after [the time of] Moses when they said to a prophet of theirs, "Send to us a king, and we will fight in the way of Allāh"? He said, "Would you perhaps refrain from fighting if battle was prescribed for you?" They said, "And why should we not fight in the cause of Allāh when we have been driven out from our homes and from our children?" But when battle was prescribed for them, they turned away, except for a few of them. And Allāh is Knowing of the wrongdoers.
وَقَالَ And said waqāla to them lahum their Prophet nabiyyuhum Indeed inna Allah l-laha (has) surely qad raised baʿatha for you lakum Talut ṭālūta (as) a king malikan They said qālū How annā can be yakūnu for him lahu the kingship l-mul'ku over us ʿalaynā while we wanaḥnu (are) more entitled aḥaqqu to kingship bil-mul'ki than him min'hu and not walam he has been given yu'ta abundance saʿatan of mina [the] wealth l-māli He said qāla Indeed inna Allah l-laha has chosen him iṣ'ṭafāhu over you ʿalaykum and increased him wazādahu abundantly basṭatan in fī [the] knowledge l-ʿil'mi and [the] physique wal-jis'mi And Allah wal-lahu gives yu'tī His kingdom mul'kahu (to) whom man He wills yashāu And Allah wal-lahu (is) All-Encompassing wāsiʿun All-Knowing ʿalīmun
And their prophet said to them, "Indeed, Allāh has sent to you Saul as a king." They said, "How can he have kingship over us while we are more worthy of kingship than him and he has not been given any measure of wealth?" He said, "Indeed, Allāh has chosen him over you and has increased him abundantly in knowledge and stature. And Allāh gives His sovereignty to whom He wills. And Allāh is all-Encompassing [in favor] and Knowing."
وَقَالَ And said waqāla to them lahum their Prophet nabiyyuhum Indeed inna a sign āyata (of) his kingship mul'kihi (is) that an will come to you yatiyakumu the ark l-tābūtu in it fīhi (is) tranquility sakīnatun from min your Lord rabbikum and a remnant wabaqiyyatun of what mimmā (was) left taraka (by the) family ālu (of) Musa mūsā and family waālu (of) Harun hārūna will carry it taḥmiluhu the Angels l-malāikatu Indeed inna in fī that dhālika (is) surely a sign laāyatan for you lakum if in you are kuntum believers mu'minīna
And their prophet said to them, "Indeed, a sign of his kingship is that the chest will come to you in which is assurance1 from your Lord and a remnant of what the family of Moses and the family of Aaron had left, carried by the angels. Indeed in that is a sign for you, if you are believers."
فَلَمَّا Then when falammā set out faṣala Talut ṭālūtu with the forces bil-junūdi he said qāla Indeed inna Allah l-laha will test you mub'talīkum with a river binaharin So whoever faman drinks shariba from it min'hu then he is not falaysa from me minnī and whoever waman (does) not lam taste it yaṭʿamhu then indeed, he fa-innahu (is) from me minnī except illā whoever mani takes igh'tarafa (in the) hollow ghur'fatan (of) his hand biyadihi Then they drank fasharibū from it min'hu except illā a few qalīlan of them min'hum Then when falammā he crossed it jāwazahu he huwa and those who wa-alladhīna believed āmanū with him maʿahu they said qālū No lā strength ṭāqata for us lanā today l-yawma against Jalut bijālūta and his troops wajunūdihi Said qāla those who alladhīna were certain yaẓunnūna that they annahum (would) meet mulāqū Allah l-lahi How many kam of min a company fi-atin small qalīlatin overcame ghalabat a company fi-atan large kathīratan by (the) permission bi-idh'ni (of) Allah l-lahi And Allah wal-lahu (is) with maʿa the patient ones l-ṣābirīna
And when Saul went forth with the soldiers, he said, "Indeed, Allāh will be testing you with a river. So whoever drinks from it is not of me, and whoever does not taste it is indeed of me, excepting one who takes [from it] in the hollow of his hand." But they drank from it, except a [very] few of them. Then when he had crossed it along with those who believed with him, they said, "There is no power for us today against Goliath and his soldiers." But those who were certain that they would meet Allāh said, "How many a small company has overcome a large company by permission of Allāh. And Allāh is with the patient."
وَلَمَّا And when walammā they went forth barazū to (face) Jalut lijālūta and his troops wajunūdihi they said qālū Our Lord rabbanā Pour afrigh on us ʿalaynā patience ṣabran and make firm wathabbit our feet aqdāmanā and help us wa-unṣur'nā against ʿalā the people l-qawmi (who are) disbelieving l-kāfirīna
And when they went forth to [face] Goliath and his soldiers, they said, "Our Lord, pour upon us patience and plant firmly our feet and give us victory over the disbelieving people."
فَهَزَمُوهُم So they defeated them fahazamūhum by (the) permission bi-idh'ni (of) Allah l-lahi and killed waqatala Dawood dāwūdu Jalut jālūta and gave him waātāhu Allah l-lahu the kingdom l-mul'ka and the wisdom wal-ḥik'mata and taught him waʿallamahu that which mimmā He willed yashāu And if not walawlā (for the) repelling dafʿu (by) Allah l-lahi [the] people l-nāsa some of them baʿḍahum with others bibaʿḍin certainly (would have) corrupted lafasadati the Earth l-arḍu [and] but walākinna Allah l-laha (is) Possessor dhū (of) bounty faḍlin to ʿalā the worlds l-ʿālamīna
So they defeated them by permission of Allāh, and David killed Goliath, and Allāh gave him the kingship and wisdom [i.e., prophethood] and taught him from that which He willed. And if it were not for Allāh checking [some] people by means of others, the earth would have been corrupted, but Allāh is the possessor of bounty for the worlds.
تِلْكَ These til'ka (are the) Verses āyātu (of) Allah l-lahi We recite them natlūhā to you ʿalayka in [the] truth bil-ḥaqi And indeed, you wa-innaka (are) surely of lamina the Messengers l-mur'salīna
These are the verses of Allāh which We recite to you, [O Muḥammad], in truth. And indeed, you are from among the messengers.
۞ تِلْكَ These til'ka (are) the Messengers l-rusulu We (have) preferred faḍḍalnā some of them baʿḍahum over ʿalā others baʿḍin Among them min'hum (were those with) whom man spoke kallama Allah l-lahu and He raised warafaʿa some of them baʿḍahum (in) degrees darajātin And We gave waātaynā Isa ʿīsā son ib'na (of) Maryam maryama the clear proofs l-bayināti and We supported him wa-ayyadnāhu with Spirit birūḥi [the] Holy l-qudusi And if walaw (had) willed shāa Allah l-lahu not mā (would have) fought each other iq'tatala those who alladhīna (came) from min after them baʿdihim from min after baʿdi [what] mā came to them jāathumu the clear proofs l-bayinātu [And] but walākini they differed ikh'talafū [so] of them famin'hum (are some) who man believed āmana and of them wamin'hum (are some) who man denied kafara And if walaw (had) willed shāa Allah l-lahu not mā they (would have) fought each other iq'tatalū [and] but walākinna Allah l-laha does yafʿalu what mā He intends yurīdu
Those messengers - some of them We caused to exceed others. Among them were those to whom Allāh spoke, and He raised some of them in degree. And We gave Jesus, the son of Mary, clear proofs, and We supported him with the Pure Spirit [i.e., Gabriel]. If Allāh had willed, those [generations] succeeding them would not have fought each other after the clear proofs had come to them. But they differed, and some of them believed and some of them disbelieved. And if Allāh had willed, they would not have fought each other, but Allāh does what He intends.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you yāayyuhā who alladhīna believe[d] āmanū Spend anfiqū of what mimmā We (have) provided you razaqnākum from min before qabli that an comes yatiya a Day yawmun no lā bargaining bayʿun in it fīhi and no walā friendship khullatun and no walā intercession shafāʿatun And the deniers wal-kāfirūna they humu (are) the wrongdoers l-ẓālimūna
O you who have believed, spend from that which We have provided for you before there comes a Day in which there is no exchange [i.e., ransom] and no friendship and no intercession. And the disbelievers - they are the wrongdoers.
ٱللَّهُ Allah al-lahu (there is) no lā God ilāha except illā Him huwa the Ever-Living l-ḥayu the Sustainer of all that exists l-qayūmu Not lā overtakes Him takhudhuhu slumber sinatun [and] not walā sleep nawmun To Him (belongs) lahu what(ever) mā (is) in fī the heavens l-samāwāti and what(ever) wamā (is) in fī the earth l-arḍi Who man (is) the one dhā who alladhī can intercede yashfaʿu with Him ʿindahu except illā by His permission bi-idh'nihi He knows yaʿlamu what mā (is) bayna before them aydīhim and what wamā (is) behind them khalfahum And not walā they encompass yuḥīṭūna anything bishayin of min His Knowledge ʿil'mihi except illā [of] what bimā He willed shāa Extends wasiʿa His Seat kur'siyyuhu (to) the heavens l-samāwāti and the earth wal-arḍa And not walā tires Him yaūduhu (the) guarding of both of them ḥif'ẓuhumā And He wahuwa (is) the Most High l-ʿaliyu the Most Great l-ʿaẓīmu
Allāh - there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living,1 the Self-Sustaining.2 Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them,3 and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursī4 extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High,5 the Most Great.6
لَآ (There is) no lā compulsion ik'rāha in fī the religion l-dīni Surely qad has become distinct tabayyana the right (path) l-rush'du from mina the wrong l-ghayi Then whoever faman disbelieves yakfur in false deities bil-ṭāghūti and believes wayu'min in Allah bil-lahi then surely faqadi he grasped is'tamsaka the handhold bil-ʿur'wati [the] firm l-wuth'qā (which) not lā (will) break infiṣāma [for it] lahā And Allah wal-lahu (is) All-Hearing samīʿun All-Knowing ʿalīmun
There shall be no compulsion in [acceptance of] the religion. The right course has become distinct from the wrong. So whoever disbelieves in ṭāghūt1 and believes in Allāh has grasped the most trustworthy handhold with no break in it. And Allāh is Hearing and Knowing.
ٱللَّهُ Allah al-lahu (is the) Protecting Guardian waliyyu (of) those who alladhīna believe[d] āmanū He brings them out yukh'rijuhum from mina [the] darkness l-ẓulumāti towards ilā [the] light l-nūri And those who wa-alladhīna disbelieve(d) kafarū their guardians awliyāuhumu (are) the evil ones l-ṭāghūtu they bring them out yukh'rijūnahum from mina the light l-nūri towards ilā [the] darkness l-ẓulumāti Those ulāika (are the) companions aṣḥābu (of) the Fire l-nāri they hum in it fīhā will abide forever khālidūna
Allāh is the Ally1 of those who believe. He brings them out from darknesses into the light. And those who disbelieve - their allies are ṭāghūt. They take them out of the light into darknesses.2 Those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide eternally therein.
أَلَمْ Did not alam you see tara [towards] ilā the one who alladhī argued ḥājja (with) Ibrahim ib'rāhīma concerning fī his Lord rabbihi because an gave him ātāhu Allah l-lahu the kingdom l-mul'ka When idh Said qāla Ibrahim ib'rāhīmu My Lord rabbiya (is) the One Who alladhī grants life yuḥ'yī and causes death wayumītu He said qāla I anā give life uḥ'yī and cause death wa-umītu Said qāla Ibrahim ib'rāhīmu [Then] indeed fa-inna Allah l-laha brings up yatī the sun bil-shamsi from mina the east l-mashriqi so you bring fati it bihā from mina the west l-maghribi So became dumbfounded fabuhita the one who alladhī disbelieved kafara and Allah wal-lahu (does) not lā guide yahdī the people l-qawma (who are) [the] wrongdoers l-ẓālimīna
Have you not considered the one who argued with Abraham about his Lord [merely] because Allāh had given him kingship? When Abraham said, "My Lord is the one who gives life and causes death," he said, "I give life and cause death." Abraham said, "Indeed, Allāh brings up the sun from the east, so bring it up from the west." So the disbeliever was overwhelmed [by astonishment], and Allāh does not guide the wrongdoing people.
أَوْ Or aw like the one who ka-alladhī passed marra by ʿalā a township qaryatin and it wahiya (had) overturned khāwiyatun on ʿalā its roofs ʿurūshihā He said qāla How annā (will) bring to life yuḥ'yī this (town) hādhihi Allah l-lahu after baʿda its death mawtihā Then he was made to die fa-amātahu (by) Allah l-lahu (for) a hundred mi-ata year(s) ʿāmin then thumma He raised him baʿathahu He said qāla How long kam (have) you remained labith'ta He said qāla I remained labith'tu (for) a day yawman or aw a part baʿḍa (of) a day yawmin He said qāla Nay bal you (have) remained labith'ta one hundred mi-ata year(s) ʿāmin Then look fa-unẓur at ilā your food ṭaʿāmika and your drink washarābika (they did) not lam change with time yatasannah and look wa-unẓur at ilā your donkey ḥimārika and We will make you walinajʿalaka a sign āyatan for the people lilnnāsi And look wa-unẓur at ilā the bones l-ʿiẓāmi how kayfa We raise them nunshizuhā then thumma We cover them naksūhā (with) flesh laḥman Then when falammā became clear tabayyana to him lahu he said qāla I know aʿlamu that anna Allah l-laha (is) on ʿalā every kulli thing shayin All-Powerful qadīrun
Or [consider such an example] as the one who passed by a township which had fallen into ruin. He said, "How will Allāh bring this to life after its death?" So Allāh caused him to die for a hundred years; then He revived him. He said, "How long have you remained?" He [the man] said, "I have remained a day or part of a day." He said, "Rather, you have remained one hundred years. Look at your food and your drink; it has not changed with time. And look at your donkey; and We will make you a sign for the people. And look at the bones [of this donkey] - how We raise them and then We cover them with flesh." And when it became clear to him, he said, "I know that Allāh is over all things competent."
وَإِذْ And when wa-idh said qāla Ibrahim ib'rāhīmu My Lord rabbi show me arinī how kayfa You give life tuḥ'yī (to) the dead l-mawtā He said qāla Have not awalam you believed tu'min He said qāla Yes balā [and] but walākin to satisfy liyaṭma-inna my heart qalbī He said qāla Then take fakhudh four arbaʿatan of mina the birds l-ṭayri and incline them faṣur'hunna towards you ilayka then thumma put ij'ʿal on ʿalā each kulli hill jabalin of them min'hunna a portion juz'an then thumma call them ud'ʿuhunna they will come to you yatīnaka (in) haste saʿyan And know wa-iʿ'lam that anna Allah l-laha (is) All-Mighty ʿazīzun All-Wise ḥakīmun
And [mention] when Abraham said, "My Lord, show me how You give life to the dead." [Allāh] said, "Have you not believed?" He said, "Yes, but [I ask] only that my heart may be satisfied." [Allāh] said, "Take four birds and commit them to yourself.1 Then [after slaughtering them] put on each hill a portion of them; then call them - they will come [flying] to you in haste. And know that Allāh is Exalted in Might and Wise."
مَّثَلُ Example mathalu (of) those who alladhīna spend yunfiqūna their wealth amwālahum in fī (the) way sabīli (of) Allah l-lahi (is) like kamathali a grain ḥabbatin which grows anbatat seven sabʿa ears sanābila in fī each kulli ear sunbulatin hundred mi-atu grain(s) ḥabbatin And Allah wal-lahu gives manifold yuḍāʿifu to whom liman He wills yashāu And Allah wal-lahu (is) All-Encompassing wāsiʿun All-Knowing ʿalīmun
The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allāh is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allāh multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allāh is all-Encompassing and Knowing.
ٱلَّذِينَ Those who alladhīna spend yunfiqūna their wealth amwālahum in fī (the) way sabīli (of) Allah l-lahi then thumma not lā they follow yut'biʿūna what mā they spend anfaqū (with) reminders of generosity mannan and not walā hurt adhan for them lahum their reward ajruhum (is) with ʿinda their Lord rabbihim and (there will be) no walā fear khawfun on them ʿalayhim and not walā they hum will grieve yaḥzanūna
Those who spend their wealth in the way of Allāh and then do not follow up what they have spent with reminders [of it] or [other] injury will have their reward with their Lord, and there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.
۞ قَوْلٌۭ A word qawlun kind maʿrūfun and (seeking) forgiveness wamaghfiratun (are) better khayrun than min a charity ṣadaqatin followed [it] yatbaʿuhā (by) hurt adhan And Allah wal-lahu (is) All-Sufficient ghaniyyun All-Forbearing ḥalīmun
Kind speech and forgiveness are better than charity followed by injury. And Allāh is Free of need and Forbearing.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you yāayyuhā who alladhīna believe[d] āmanū (Do) not lā render in vain tub'ṭilū your charities ṣadaqātikum with reminders (of it) bil-mani or [the] hurt wal-adhā like the one who ka-alladhī spends yunfiqu his wealth mālahu (to) be seen riāa (by) the people l-nāsi and (does) not walā believe yu'minu in Allah bil-lahi and the Day wal-yawmi [the] Last l-ākhiri Then his example famathaluhu (is) like kamathali (that of a) smooth rock ṣafwānin upon it ʿalayhi (is) dust turābun then fell on it fa-aṣābahu heavy rain wābilun then left it fatarakahu bare ṣaldan Not lā they have control yaqdirūna on ʿalā anything shayin of what mimmā they (have) earned kasabū And Allah wal-lahu (does) not lā guide yahdī the people l-qawma [the] disbelieving l-kāfirīna
O you who have believed, do not invalidate your charities with reminders [of it] or injury as does one who spends his wealth [only] to be seen by the people and does not believe in Allāh and the Last Day. His example is like that of a [large] smooth stone upon which is dust and is hit by a downpour that leaves it bare. They are unable [to keep] anything of what they have earned. And Allāh does not guide the disbelieving people.
وَمَثَلُ And (the) example wamathalu (of) those who alladhīna spend yunfiqūna their wealth amwālahumu seeking ib'tighāa (the) pleasure marḍāti (of) Allah l-lahi and certainty watathbītan from min their (inner) souls anfusihim (is) like kamathali a garden jannatin on a height birabwatin fell on it aṣābahā heavy rain wābilun so it yielded faātat its harvest ukulahā double ḍiʿ'fayni Then if fa-in (does) not lam fall (on) it yuṣib'hā heavy rain wābilun then a drizzle faṭallun And Allah wal-lahu of what bimā you do taʿmalūna (is) All-Seer baṣīrun
And the example of those who spend their wealth seeking means to the approval of Allāh and assuring [reward for] themselves is like a garden on high ground which is hit by a downpour - so it yields its fruits in double. And [even] if it is not hit by a downpour, then a drizzle [is sufficient]. And Allāh, of what you do, is Seeing.
أَيَوَدُّ Would like ayawaddu any of you aḥadukum that an it be takūna for him lahu a garden jannatun of min date-palms nakhīlin and grapevines wa-aʿnābin flowing tajrī [from] min underneath it taḥtihā the rivers l-anhāru for him lahu in it fīhā of min all (kinds) kulli (of) [the] fruits l-thamarāti and strikes him wa-aṣābahu [the] old age l-kibaru and [for] his walahu children dhurriyyatun (are) weak ḍuʿafāu then falls on it fa-aṣābahā whirlwind iʿ'ṣārun in it fīhi (is) fire nārun then it is burnt fa-iḥ'taraqat Thus kadhālika makes clear yubayyinu Allah l-lahu for you lakumu (His) Signs l-āyāti so that you may laʿallakum ponder tatafakkarūna
Would one of you like to have a garden of palm trees and grapevines underneath which rivers flow in which he has from every fruit? But he is afflicted with old age and has weak [i.e., immature] offspring, and it is hit by a whirlwind containing fire and is burned. Thus does Allāh make clear to you [His] verses that you might give thought.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you yāayyuhā who alladhīna believe[d] āmanū Spend anfiqū from min (the) good things ṭayyibāti that mā you have earned kasabtum and whatever wamimmā We brought forth akhrajnā for you lakum from mina the earth l-arḍi And (do) not walā aim (at) tayammamū the bad l-khabītha of it min'hu you spend tunfiqūna while you (would) not walastum take it biākhidhīhi except illā [that] an (with) close(d) eyes tugh'miḍū [in it] fīhi and know wa-iʿ'lamū that anna Allah l-laha (is) Self-Sufficient ghaniyyun Praiseworthy ḥamīdun
O you who have believed, spend from the good things which you have earned and from that which We have produced for you from the earth. And do not aim toward the defective therefrom, spending [from that] while you would not take it [yourself] except with closed eyes. And know that Allāh is Free of need and Praiseworthy.
ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُ The Shaitaan al-shayṭānu promises you yaʿidukumu [the] poverty l-faqra and orders you wayamurukum to immorality bil-faḥshāi while Allah wal-lahu promises you yaʿidukum forgiveness maghfiratan from Him min'hu and bounty wafaḍlan And Allah wal-lahu (is) All-Encompassing wāsiʿun All-Knowing ʿalīmun
Satan threatens you with poverty and orders you to immorality, while Allāh promises you forgiveness from Him and bounty. And Allāh is all-Encompassing and Knowing.
يُؤْتِى He grants yu'tī [the] wisdom l-ḥik'mata (to) whom man He wills yashāu and whoever waman is granted yu'ta [the] wisdom l-ḥik'mata then certainly faqad he is granted ūtiya good khayran abundant kathīran And none wamā remembers yadhakkaru except illā those ulū (of) understanding l-albābi
He gives wisdom1 to whom He wills, and whoever has been given wisdom has certainly been given much good. And none will remember except those of understanding.
وَمَآ And whatever wamā you spend anfaqtum (out) of min (your) expenditures nafaqatin or aw you vow nadhartum of min vow(s) nadhrin then indeed fa-inna Allah l-laha knows it yaʿlamuhu and not wamā for the wrongdoers lilẓẓālimīna any min helpers anṣārin
And whatever you spend of expenditures or make of vows - indeed, Allāh knows of it. And for the wrongdoers there are no helpers.
إِن If in you disclose tub'dū the charities l-ṣadaqāti then good faniʿimmā it (is) hiya But if wa-in you keep it secret tukh'fūhā and give it watu'tūhā (to) the poor l-fuqarāa then it fahuwa (is) better khayrun for you lakum And He will remove wayukaffiru from you ʿankum [of] min your evil deeds sayyiātikum And Allah wal-lahu with what bimā you do taʿmalūna (is) All-Aware khabīrun
If you disclose your charitable expenditures, they are good; but if you conceal them and give them to the poor, it is better for you, and He will remove from you some of your misdeeds [thereby]. And Allāh, of what you do, is [fully] Aware.
۞ لَّيْسَ Not laysa on you ʿalayka (is) their guidance hudāhum [and] but walākinna Allah l-laha guides yahdī whom man He wills yashāu And whatever wamā you spend tunfiqū of min good khayrin then it is for yourself fali-anfusikum and not wamā you spend tunfiqūna except illā seeking ib'tighāa (the) face wajhi (of) Allah l-lahi And whatever wamā you spend tunfiqū of min good khayrin will be repaid in full yuwaffa to you ilaykum and you wa-antum (will) not lā be wronged tuẓ'lamūna
Not upon you, [O Muḥammad], is [responsibility for] their guidance, but Allāh guides whom He wills. And whatever good you [believers] spend is for yourselves, and you do not spend except seeking the face [i.e., approval] of Allāh. And whatever you spend of good1 - it will be fully repaid to you, and you will not be wronged.
لِلْفُقَرَآءِ For the poor lil'fuqarāi those who alladhīna are wrapped up uḥ'ṣirū in fī (the) way sabīli (of) Allah l-lahi not lā they are able yastaṭīʿūna (to) move about ḍarban in fī the earth l-arḍi Think (about) them yaḥsabuhumu the ignorant one l-jāhilu (that they are) self-sufficient aghniyāa (because) of mina (their) restraint l-taʿafufi you recognize them taʿrifuhum by their mark bisīmāhum Not lā (do) they ask yasalūna the people l-nāsa with importunity il'ḥāfan And whatever wamā you spend tunfiqū of min good khayrin then indeed fa-inna Allah l-laha of it bihi (is) All-Knower ʿalīmun
[Charity is] for the poor who have been restricted for the cause of Allāh, unable to move about in the land. An ignorant [person] would think them self-sufficient because of their restraint, but you will know them by their [characteristic] sign. They do not ask people persistently [or at all]. And whatever you spend of good - indeed, Allāh is Knowing of it.
ٱلَّذِينَ Those who alladhīna spend yunfiqūna their wealth amwālahum by night bi-al-layli and day wal-nahāri secretly sirran and openly waʿalāniyatan then for them falahum (is) their reward ajruhum with ʿinda their Lord rabbihim and no walā fear khawfun on them ʿalayhim and not walā they hum will grieve yaḥzanūna
Those who spend their wealth [in Allāh's way] by night and by day, secretly and publicly - they will have their reward with their Lord. And no fear will there be concerning them, nor will they grieve.
ٱلَّذِينَ Those who alladhīna consume yakulūna [the] usury l-riba not lā they can stand yaqūmūna except illā like kamā stands yaqūmu the one who alladhī confounds him yatakhabbaṭuhu the Shaitaan l-shayṭānu with mina (his) touch l-masi That dhālika (is) because they bi-annahum say qālū Only innamā the trade l-bayʿu (is) like mith'lu [the] usury l-riba While has permitted wa-aḥalla Allah l-lahu [the] trade l-bayʿa but (has) forbidden waḥarrama [the] usury l-riba Then whoever faman comes to him jāahu (the) admonition mawʿiẓatun from min His Lord rabbihi and he refrained fa-intahā then for him falahu what mā (has) passed salafa and his case wa-amruhu (is) with ilā Allah l-lahi and whoever waman repeated ʿāda then those fa-ulāika (are the) companions aṣḥābu (of) the Fire l-nāri they hum in it fīhā will abide forever khālidūna
Those who consume interest1 cannot stand [on the Day of Resurrection] except as one stands who is being beaten by Satan into insanity. That is because they say, "Trade is [just] like interest." But Allāh has permitted trade and has forbidden interest. So whoever has received an admonition from his Lord and desists may have what is past, and his affair rests with Allāh. But whoever returns [to dealing in interest or usury] - those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide eternally therein.
يَمْحَقُ Destroys yamḥaqu Allah l-lahu the usury l-riba and (gives) increase wayur'bī (for) the charities l-ṣadaqāti And Allah wal-lahu (does) not lā love yuḥibbu every kulla ungrateful kaffārin sinner athīmin
Allāh destroys interest and gives increase for charities. And Allāh does not like every sinning disbeliever.
إِنَّ Indeed inna those who alladhīna believe[d] āmanū and did waʿamilū good deeds l-ṣāliḥāti and established wa-aqāmū the prayer l-ṣalata and gave waātawū the zakah l-zakata for them lahum their reward ajruhum (is) with ʿinda their Lord rabbihim and no walā fear khawfun on them ʿalayhim and not walā they hum will grieve yaḥzanūna
Indeed, those who believe and do righteous deeds and establish prayer and give zakāh will have their reward with their Lord, and there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve.
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you yāayyuhā who alladhīna believe[d] āmanū Fear ittaqū Allah l-laha and give up wadharū what mā remained baqiya of mina [the] usury l-riba if in you are kuntum believers mu'minīna
O you who have believed, fear Allāh and give up what remains [due to you] of interest, if you should be believers.
فَإِن And if fa-in not lam you do tafʿalū then be informed fadhanū of a war biḥarbin from mina Allah l-lahi and His Messenger warasūlihi And if wa-in you repent tub'tum then for you falakum (is) ruūsu your capital amwālikum (do) not lā wrong taẓlimūna and not walā you will be wronged tuẓ'lamūna
And if you do not, then be informed of a war [against you] from Allāh and His Messenger. But if you repent, you may have your principal - [thus] you do no wrong, nor are you wronged.
وَإِن And if wa-in is kāna the (debtor) dhū in difficulty ʿus'ratin then postponement fanaẓiratun until ilā ease maysaratin And if wa-an you remit as charity taṣaddaqū (it is) better khayrun for you lakum If in you kuntum know taʿlamūna
And if someone is in hardship, then [let there be] postponement until [a time of] ease. But if you give [from your right as] charity, then it is better for you, if you only knew.
وَٱتَّقُوا۟ And fear wa-ittaqū a Day yawman you will be brought back tur'jaʿūna [in it] fīhi to ilā Allah l-lahi Then thumma (will be) repaid in full tuwaffā every kullu soul nafsin what mā it earned kasabat and they wahum not lā will be wronged yuẓ'lamūna
And fear a Day when you will be returned to Allāh. Then every soul will be compensated for what it earned, and they will not be wronged [i.e., treated unjustly].
يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا O you yāayyuhā who alladhīna believe[d] āmanū When idhā you contract with one another tadāyantum any debt bidaynin for ilā a term ajalin fixed musamman then write it fa-uk'tubūhu And let write walyaktub between you baynakum a scribe kātibun in justice bil-ʿadli And not walā (should) refuse yaba a scribe kātibun that an he writes yaktuba as kamā (has) taught him ʿallamahu Allah l-lahu So let him write falyaktub and let dictate walyum'lili the one alladhī on whom ʿalayhi (is) the right l-ḥaqu and let him fear walyattaqi Allah l-laha his Lord rabbahu and (let him) not walā diminish yabkhas from it min'hu anything shayan Then if fa-in is kāna the one alladhī on him ʿalayhi (is) the right l-ḥaqu (of) limited understanding safīhan or aw weak ḍaʿīfan or aw not lā capable yastaṭīʿu that an (can) dictate yumilla he huwa then let dictate falyum'lil his guardian waliyyuhu with justice bil-ʿadli And call for evidence wa-is'tashhidū two witnesses shahīdayni among min your men rijālikum And if fa-in not lam there are yakūnā two men rajulayni then one man farajulun and two women wa-im'ra-atāni of whom mimman you agree tarḍawna of mina [the] witnesses l-shuhadāi (so) that (if) an [she] errs taḍilla one of the two iḥ'dāhumā then will remind fatudhakkira one of the two iḥ'dāhumā the other l-ukh'rā And not walā (should) refuse yaba the witnesses l-shuhadāu when idhā that mā they are called duʿū And not walā (be) weary tasamū that an you write it taktubūhu small ṣaghīran or aw large kabīran for ilā its term ajalihi That dhālikum (is) more just aqsaṭu near ʿinda Allah l-lahi and more upright wa-aqwamu for evidence lilshahādati and nearer wa-adnā that not allā you (have) doubt tartābū except illā that an be takūna a transaction tijāratan present ḥāḍiratan you carry out tudīrūnahā among you baynakum then not falaysa on you ʿalaykum any sin junāḥun that not allā you write it taktubūhā And take witness wa-ashhidū when idhā you make commercial transaction tabāyaʿtum And not walā (should) be harmed yuḍārra (the) scribe kātibun and not walā (the) witness shahīdun and if wa-in you do tafʿalū then indeed it fa-innahu (is) sinful conduct fusūqun for you bikum and fear wa-ittaqū Allah l-laha And teaches wayuʿallimukumu Allah l-lahu And Allah wal-lahu of every bikulli thing shayin (is) All-Knower ʿalīmun
O you who have believed, when you contract a debt for a specified term, write it down. And let a scribe write [it] between you in justice. Let no scribe refuse to write as Allāh has taught him. So let him write and let the one who has the obligation [i.e., the debtor] dictate. And let him fear Allāh, his Lord, and not leave anything out of it. But if the one who has the obligation is of limited understanding or weak or unable to dictate himself, then let his guardian dictate in justice. And bring to witness two witnesses from among your men. And if there are not two men [available], then a man and two women from those whom you accept as witnesses - so that if one of them [i.e., the women] errs, then the other can remind her. And let not the witnesses refuse when they are called upon. And do not be [too] weary to write it, whether it is small or large, for its [specified] term. That is more just in the sight of Allāh and stronger as evidence and more likely to prevent doubt between you, except when it is an immediate transaction which you conduct among yourselves. For [then] there is no blame upon you if you do not write it. And take witnesses when you conclude a contract. Let no scribe be harmed or any witness. For if you do so, indeed, it is [grave] disobedience in you. And fear Allāh. And Allāh teaches you. And Allāh is Knowing of all things.
۞ وَإِن And if wa-in you are kuntum on ʿalā a journey safarin and not walam you find tajidū a scribe kātiban then pledge farihānun in hand maqbūḍatun Then if fa-in entrusts amina one of you baʿḍukum (to) another baʿḍan then let discharge falyu-addi the one who alladhī is entrusted u'tumina his trust amānatahu And let him fear walyattaqi Allah l-laha his Lord rabbahu And (do) not walā conceal taktumū the evidence l-shahādata And whoever waman conceals it yaktum'hā then indeed he fa-innahu (is) sinful āthimun his heart qalbuhu And Allah wal-lahu of what bimā you do taʿmalūna (is) All-Knower ʿalīmun
And if you are on a journey and cannot find a scribe, then a security deposit [should be] taken. And if one of you entrusts another, then let him who is entrusted discharge his trust [faithfully] and let him fear Allāh, his Lord. And do not conceal testimony, for whoever conceals it - his heart is indeed sinful, and Allāh is Knowing of what you do.
لِّلَّهِ To Allah (belongs) lillahi whatever mā (is) in fī the heavens l-samāwāti and whatever wamā (is) in fī the earth l-arḍi And if wa-in you disclose tub'dū what mā (is) in fī yourselves anfusikum or aw you conceal it tukh'fūhu will call you to account yuḥāsib'kum for it bihi Allah l-lahu Then, He will forgive fayaghfiru [to] whom liman He wills yashāu and He will punish wayuʿadhibu whom man He wills yashāu And Allah wal-lahu on ʿalā every kulli thing shayin (is) All-Powerful qadīrun
To Allāh belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth. Whether you show what is within yourselves or conceal it, Allāh will bring you to account for it. Then He will forgive whom He wills and punish whom He wills, and Allāh is over all things competent.
ءَامَنَ Believed āmana the Messenger l-rasūlu in what bimā was revealed unzila to him ilayhi from min his Lord rabbihi and the believers wal-mu'minūna All kullun believed āmana in Allah bil-lahi and His Angels wamalāikatihi and His Books wakutubihi and His Messengers warusulihi Not lā we make distinction nufarriqu between bayna any aḥadin of min His messengers rusulihi And they said waqālū We heard samiʿ'nā and we obeyed wa-aṭaʿnā (Grant) us Your forgiveness ghuf'rānaka our Lord rabbanā and to You wa-ilayka (is) the return l-maṣīru
The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord, and [so have] the believers. All of them have believed in Allāh and His angels and His books and His messengers, [saying], "We make no distinction between any of His messengers." And they say, "We hear and we obey. [We seek] Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the [final] destination."
لَا (Does) not lā burden yukallifu Allah l-lahu any soul nafsan except illā its capacity wus'ʿahā for it lahā what mā it earned kasabat and against it waʿalayhā what mā it earned ik'tasabat Our Lord rabbanā (Do) not lā take us to task tuākhidh'nā if in we forget nasīnā or aw we err akhṭanā Our Lord rabbanā And (do) not walā lay taḥmil upon us ʿalaynā a burden iṣ'ran like that kamā (which) You laid [it] ḥamaltahu on ʿalā those who alladhīna (were) from min before us qablinā Our Lord rabbanā [And] (do) not walā lay on us tuḥammil'nā what mā not lā (the) strength ṭāqata we have lanā [of it] (to bear) bihi And pardon wa-uʿ'fu [from] us ʿannā and forgive wa-igh'fir [for] us lanā and have mercy on us wa-ir'ḥamnā You (are) anta our Protector mawlānā so help us fa-unṣur'nā against ʿalā the people l-qawmi [the] disbelievers l-kāfirīna
Allāh does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity. It will have [the consequence of] what [good] it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what [evil] it has earned. "Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred. Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people."1
