إِذْ When idh he called nādā (to) his Lord rabbahu a call nidāan secret khafiyyan
When he called to his Lord a private call [i.e., supplication].
قَالَ He said qāla My Lord rabbi Indeed, [I] innī (have) weakened wahana my bones l-ʿaẓmu my bones minnī and flared wa-ish'taʿala (my) head l-rasu (with) white shayban and not walam I have been akun in (my) supplication (to) You biduʿāika my Lord rabbi unblessed shaqiyyan
He said, "My Lord, indeed my bones have weakened, and my head has filled1 with white, and never have I been in my supplication to You, my Lord, unhappy [i.e., disappointed].
وَإِنِّى And indeed, I wa-innī [I] fear khif'tu the successors l-mawāliya after me min after me warāī and is wakānati my wife im'ra-atī barren ʿāqiran So give fahab [to] me lī from min Yourself ladunka an heir waliyyan
And indeed, I fear the successors1 after me, and my wife has been barren, so give me from Yourself an heir

Who will inherit me1 and inherit from the family of Jacob. And make him, my Lord, pleasing [to You]."
يَـٰزَكَرِيَّآ O Zakariya yāzakariyyā Indeed, We innā [We] give you glad tidings nubashiruka of a boy bighulāmin his name us'muhu (will be) Yahya yaḥyā not lam We (have) assigned najʿal [for] it lahu before min before qablu (this) name samiyyan
[He was told],1 "O Zechariah, indeed We give you good tidings of a boy whose name will be John. We have not assigned to any before [this] name."
قَالَ He said qāla My Lord rabbi How annā can yakūnu I have lī a boy ghulāmun while is wakānati my wife im'ra-atī barren ʿāqiran and indeed waqad I have reached balaghtu of mina the old age l-kibari extreme ʿitiyyan
He said, "My Lord, how will I have a boy when my wife has been barren and I have reached extreme old age?"
قَالَ He said qāla Thus kadhālika said qāla your Lord rabbuka 'It huwa (is) easy for Me ʿalayya (is) easy for Me hayyinun and certainly waqad I (have) created you khalaqtuka before min before qablu while not walam you were taku anything.' shayan
[An angel] said, "Thus [it will be]; your Lord says, 'It is easy for Me, for I created you before, while you were nothing.'"
قَالَ He said qāla My Lord rabbi Make ij'ʿal for me lī a sign āyatan He said qāla Your sign āyatuka (is) that not allā you will speak tukallima (to) the people l-nāsa (for) three thalātha nights layālin sound sawiyyan
[Zechariah] said, "My Lord, make for me a sign." He said, "Your sign is that you will not speak to the people for three nights, [being] sound."1

[Allāh said], "O John, take the Scripture [i.e., adhere to it] with determination." And We gave him judgement [while yet] a boy
وَحَنَانًۭا And affection waḥanānan from min Us ladunnā and purity wazakatan and he was wakāna righteous taqiyyan
And affection from Us and purity, and he was fearing of Allāh
وَبَرًّۢا And dutiful wabarran to his parents biwālidayhi and not walam he was yakun a tyrant jabbāran disobedient ʿaṣiyyan
And dutiful to his parents, and he was not a disobedient tyrant.
وَسَلَـٰمٌ And peace be wasalāmun upon him ʿalayhi (the) day yawma he was born wulida and (the) day wayawma he dies yamūtu and (the) day wayawma he will be raised yub'ʿathu alive ḥayyan
And peace be upon him the day he was born and the day he dies and the day he is raised alive.
وَٱذْكُرْ And mention wa-udh'kur in fī the Book l-kitābi Maryam maryama when idhi she withdrew intabadhat from min her family ahlihā (to) a place makānan eastern sharqiyyan
And mention, [O Muḥammad], in the Book [the story of] Mary, when she withdrew from her family to a place toward the east.
فَٱتَّخَذَتْ Then she took fa-ittakhadhat from them min from them dūnihim a screen ḥijāban Then We sent fa-arsalnā to her ilayhā Our Spirit rūḥanā then he assumed for her the likeness fatamathala then he assumed for her the likeness lahā (of) a man basharan well-proportioned sawiyyan
And she took, in seclusion from them, a screen. Then We sent to her Our Angel [i.e., Gabriel], and he represented himself to her as a well-proportioned man.
قَالَتْ She said qālat Indeed, I innī [I] seek refuge aʿūdhu with the Most Gracious bil-raḥmāni from you minka if in you are kunta God fearing taqiyyan
She said, "Indeed, I seek refuge in the Most Merciful from you, [so leave me], if you should be fearing of Allāh."
قَالَ He said qāla Only innamā I am anā a Messenger rasūlu (from) your Lord rabbiki that I (may) bestow li-ahaba on you laki a son ghulāman pure zakiyyan
He said, "I am only the messenger of your Lord to give you [news of] a pure boy [i.e., son]."
قَالَتْ She said qālat How annā can be yakūnu for me lī a son ghulāmun when not walam has touched me yamsasnī a man basharun and not walam I am aku unchaste baghiyyan
She said, "How can I have a boy while no man has touched me and I have not been unchaste?"
قَالَ He said qāla Thus kadhāliki said qāla your Lord rabbuki 'It huwa (is) for Me ʿalayya easy hayyinun and so that We will make him walinajʿalahu a sign āyatan for the mankind lilnnāsi and a Mercy waraḥmatan from Us minnā And (it) is wakāna a matter amran decreed.' maqḍiyyan
He said, "Thus [it will be]; your Lord says, 'It is easy for Me, and We will make him a sign to the people and a mercy from Us. And it is a matter [already] decreed.'"
۞ فَحَمَلَتْهُ So she conceived him faḥamalathu and she withdrew fa-intabadhat with him bihi (to) a place makānan remote qaṣiyyan
So she conceived him, and she withdrew with him to a remote place.
فَأَجَآءَهَا Then drove her fa-ajāahā the pains of childbirth l-makhāḍu to ilā (the) trunk jidh'ʿi (of) the date-palm l-nakhlati She said qālat O! I wish yālaytanī I (had) died mittu before qabla this hādhā and I was wakuntu (in) oblivion nasyan forgotten mansiyyan
And the pains of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a palm tree. She said, "Oh, I wish I had died before this and was in oblivion, forgotten."
فَنَادَىٰهَا So cried to her fanādāhā from min beneath her taḥtihā That (do) not allā grieve taḥzanī verily qad (has) placed jaʿala your Lord rabbuki beneath you taḥtaki a stream sariyyan
But he1 called her from below her, "Do not grieve; your Lord has provided beneath you a stream.
وَهُزِّىٓ And shake wahuzzī towards you ilayki (the) trunk bijidh'ʿi (of) the date-palm l-nakhlati it will drop tusāqiṭ upon you ʿalayki fresh dates ruṭaban ripe janiyyan
And shake toward you the trunk of the palm tree; it will drop upon you ripe, fresh dates.
فَكُلِى So eat fakulī and drink wa-ish'rabī and cool waqarrī (your) eyes ʿaynan And if fa-immā you see tarayinna from mina human being l-bashari anyone aḥadan then say faqūlī Indeed, I innī [I] have vowed nadhartu to the Most Gracious lilrraḥmāni a fast ṣawman so not falan I will speak ukallima today l-yawma (to any) human being insiyyan
So eat and drink and be contented. And if you see from among humanity anyone, say, 'Indeed, I have vowed to the Most Merciful abstention, so I will not speak today to [any] man.'"
فَأَتَتْ Then she came fa-atat with him bihi (to) her people qawmahā carrying him taḥmiluhu They said qālū O Maryam yāmaryamu Certainly laqad you (have) brought ji'ti an amazing thing shayan an amazing thing fariyyan
Then she brought him to her people, carrying him. They said, "O Mary, you have certainly done a thing unprecedented.
يَـٰٓأُخْتَ O sister yāukh'ta (of) Harun hārūna Not mā was kāna your father abūki an evil man im'ra-a an evil man sawin and not wamā was kānat your mother ummuki unchaste baghiyyan
O sister [i.e., descendant] of Aaron, your father was not a man of evil, nor was your mother unchaste."
فَأَشَارَتْ Then she pointed fa-ashārat to him ilayhi They said qālū How kayfa (can) we speak nukallimu (to one) who man is kāna in fī the cradle l-mahdi a child ṣabiyyan
So she pointed to him. They said, "How can we speak to one who is in the cradle a child?"
قَالَ He said qāla Indeed, I am innī a slave ʿabdu (of) Allah l-lahi He gave me ātāniya the Scripture l-kitāba and made me wajaʿalanī a Prophet nabiyyan
[Jesus] said, "Indeed, I am the servant of Allāh. He has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet.
وَجَعَلَنِى And He (has) made me wajaʿalanī blessed mubārakan wherever ayna wherever mā I am kuntu and has enjoined (on) me wa-awṣānī [of] the prayer bil-ṣalati and zakah wal-zakati as long as I am mā as long as I am dum'tu alive ḥayyan
And He has made me blessed wherever I am and has enjoined upon me prayer and zakāh as long as I remain alive
وَبَرًّۢا And dutiful wabarran to my mother biwālidatī and not walam He (has) made me yajʿalnī insolent jabbāran unblessed shaqiyyan
And [made me] dutiful to my mother, and He has not made me a wretched tyrant.
وَٱلسَّلَـٰمُ And peace (be) wal-salāmu on me ʿalayya (the) day yawma I was born wulidttu and (the) day wayawma I will die amūtu and (the) Day wayawma I will be raised ub'ʿathu alive ḥayyan
And peace is on me the day I was born and the day I will die and the day I am raised alive."

That is Jesus, the son of Mary - the word of truth about which they are in dispute.
مَا Not mā (it) is kāna for Allah lillahi that an He should take yattakhidha any son min any son waladin Glory be to Him sub'ḥānahu When idhā He decrees qaḍā a matter amran then only fa-innamā He says yaqūlu to it lahu Be kun and it is fayakūnu
It is not [befitting] for Allāh to take a son; exalted is He!1 When He decrees an affair, He only says to it, "Be," and it is.
وَإِنَّ And indeed wa-inna Allah l-laha (is) my Lord rabbī and your Lord warabbukum so worship Him fa-uʿ'budūhu This hādhā (is) a path ṣirāṭun straight mus'taqīmun
[Jesus said], "And indeed, Allāh is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him. That is a straight path."
فَٱخْتَلَفَ But differed fa-ikh'talafa the sects l-aḥzābu from among them min from among them baynihim so woe fawaylun to those who lilladhīna disbelieve kafarū from min (the) witnessing mashhadi (of) a Day yawmin great ʿaẓīmin
Then the factions differed [concerning Jesus] from among them, so woe to those who disbelieved - from the scene of a tremendous Day.
أَسْمِعْ How they will hear asmiʿ How they will hear bihim and how (they will) see wa-abṣir (the) Day yawma they will come to Us yatūnanā but lākini the wrongdoers l-ẓālimūna today l-yawma (are) in fī error ḍalālin clear mubīnin
How [clearly] they will hear and see the Day they come to Us, but the wrongdoers today are in clear error.
وَأَنذِرْهُمْ And warn them wa-andhir'hum (of the) Day yawma (of) the Regret l-ḥasrati when idh has been decided quḍiya the matter l-amru And they wahum (are) in fī heedlessness ghaflatin and they wahum (do) not lā believe yu'minūna
And warn them, [O Muḥammad], of the Day of Regret, when the matter will be concluded;1 and [yet], they are in [a state of] heedlessness, and they do not believe.
إِنَّا Indeed, We innā [We] naḥnu [We] will inherit narithu the earth l-arḍa and whoever waman (is) on it ʿalayhā and to Us wa-ilaynā they will be returned yur'jaʿūna
Indeed, it is We who will inherit the earth and whoever is on it, and to Us they will be returned.

[Mention] when he said to his father, "O my father, why do you worship that which does not hear and does not see and will not benefit you at all?
يَـٰٓأَبَتِ O my father yāabati Indeed, [I] innī verily qad (has) come to me jāanī of mina the knowledge l-ʿil'mi what mā not lam came to you yatika so follow me fa-ittabiʿ'nī I will guide you ahdika (to) the path ṣirāṭan even sawiyyan
O my father, indeed there has come to me of knowledge that which has not come to you, so follow me; I will guide you to an even path.
يَـٰٓأَبَتِ O my father yāabati (Do) not lā worship taʿbudi the Shaitaan l-shayṭāna Indeed inna the Shaitaan l-shayṭāna is kāna to the Most Gracious lilrraḥmāni disobedient ʿaṣiyyan
O my father, do not worship [i.e., obey] Satan. Indeed Satan has ever been, to the Most Merciful, disobedient.
يَـٰٓأَبَتِ O my father yāabati Indeed, I innī [I] fear akhāfu that an will touch you yamassaka a punishment ʿadhābun from mina the Most Gracious l-raḥmāni so you would be fatakūna to the Shaitaan lilshayṭāni a friend waliyyan
O my father, indeed I fear that there will touch you a punishment from the Most Merciful so you would be to Satan a companion [in Hellfire]."
قَالَ He said qāla Do you hate arāghibun Do you hate anta (from) ʿan my gods ālihatī O Ibrahim yāib'rāhīmu Surely, if la-in not lam you desist tantahi surely, I will stone you la-arjumannaka so leave me wa-uh'jur'nī (for) a prolonged time maliyyan
[His father] said, "Have you no desire for my gods, O Abraham? If you do not desist, I will surely stone you, so avoid me a prolonged time."
قَالَ He said qāla Peace (be) salāmun on you ʿalayka I will ask forgiveness sa-astaghfiru for you laka (from) my Lord rabbī Indeed, He innahu is kāna to me bī Ever Gracious ḥafiyyan
[Abraham] said, "Peace [i.e., safety] will be upon you.1 I will ask forgiveness for you of my Lord. Indeed, He is ever gracious to me.
وَأَعْتَزِلُكُمْ And I will leave you wa-aʿtazilukum and what wamā you invoke tadʿūna besides min besides dūni Allah l-lahi and I will invoke wa-adʿū my Lord rabbī May be ʿasā that not allā I will be akūna in invocation biduʿāi (to) my Lord rabbī unblessed shaqiyyan
And I will leave you and those you invoke other than Allāh and will invoke1 my Lord. I expect that I will not be in invocation to my Lord unhappy [i.e., disappointed]."
فَلَمَّا So when falammā he left them iʿ'tazalahum and what wamā they worshipped yaʿbudūna besides Allah min besides Allah dūni besides Allah l-lahi [and] We bestowed wahabnā [to] him lahu Isaac is'ḥāqa and Yaqub wayaʿqūba and each (of them) wakullan We made jaʿalnā a Prophet nabiyyan

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ Those ulāika (were) the ones whom alladhīna Allah bestowed favor anʿama Allah bestowed favor l-lahu upon them ʿalayhim from (among) mina the Prophets l-nabiyīna of min (the) offspring dhurriyyati (of) Adam ādama and of those wamimman We carried ḥamalnā with maʿa Nuh nūḥin and of wamin (the) offspring dhurriyyati (of) Ibrahim ib'rāhīma and Israel wa-is'rāīla and of (those) whom wamimman We guided hadaynā and We chose wa-ij'tabaynā When idhā were recited tut'lā to them ʿalayhim (the) Verses āyātu (of) the Most Gracious l-raḥmāni they fell kharrū prostrating sujjadan and weeping wabukiyyan
Those were the ones upon whom Allāh bestowed favor from among the prophets of the descendants of Adam and of those We carried [in the ship] with Noah, and of the descendants of Abraham and Israel [i.e., Jacob], and of those whom We guided and chose. When the verses of the Most Merciful were recited to them, they fell in prostration and weeping.
۞ فَخَلَفَ Then succeeded fakhalafa after them min after them baʿdihim successors khalfun who neglected aḍāʿū the prayer l-ṣalata and they followed wa-ittabaʿū the lusts l-shahawāti so soon fasawfa they will meet yalqawna evil ghayyan
But there came after them successors [i.e., later generations] who neglected prayer and pursued desires; so they are going to meet evil1 -
إِلَّا Except illā (one) who man repented tāba and believed waāmana and did waʿamila good (deeds) ṣāliḥan Then those fa-ulāika will enter yadkhulūna Paradise l-janata and not walā they will be wronged yuẓ'lamūna (in) anything shayan
Except those who repent, believe and do righteousness; for those will enter Paradise and will not be wronged at all.
جَنَّـٰتِ Gardens jannāti (of) Eden ʿadnin which allatī promised waʿada the Most Gracious l-raḥmānu (to) His slaves ʿibādahu in the unseen bil-ghaybi Indeed, [it] innahu is kāna His promise waʿduhu sure to come matiyyan
[Therein are] gardens of perpetual residence which the Most Merciful has promised His servants in the unseen. Indeed, His promise has ever been eminent.1
لَّا Not lā they will hear yasmaʿūna therein fīhā vain talk laghwan but illā peace salāman And for them walahum (is) their provision riz'quhum therein fīhā morning buk'ratan and evening waʿashiyyan
They will not hear therein any ill speech - only [greetings of] peace - and they will have their provision therein, morning and afternoon.
تِلْكَ This til'ka (is) Paradise l-janatu which allatī We give (as) inheritance nūrithu [of] (to) min Our slaves ʿibādinā (the one) who man is kāna righteous taqiyyan
That is Paradise, which We give as inheritance to those of Our servants who were fearing of Allāh.
وَمَا And not wamā we descend natanazzalu except illā by (the) Command bi-amri (of) your Lord rabbika To Him (belongs) lahu what mā (is) before us bayna (is) before us aydīnā and what wamā (is) behind us khalfanā and what wamā (is) between bayna that dhālika And not wamā is kāna your Lord rabbuka forgetful nasiyyan
[Gabriel said],1 "And we [angels] descend not except by the order of your Lord. To Him belongs that before us and that behind us and what is in between. And never is your Lord forgetful -
رَّبُّ Lord rabbu (of) the heavens l-samāwāti and the earth wal-arḍi and whatever wamā (is) between both of them baynahumā so worship Him fa-uʿ'bud'hu and be constant wa-iṣ'ṭabir in His worship liʿibādatihi Do hal you know taʿlamu for Him lahu any similarity samiyyan
Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them - so worship Him and have patience for His worship. Do you know of any similarity to Him?"
وَيَقُولُ And says wayaqūlu [the] man l-insānu What! When a-idhā What! When mā I am dead mittu surely will lasawfa I be brought forth ukh'raju alive ḥayyan
And man [i.e., the disbeliever] says, "When I have died, am I going to be brought forth alive?"
أَوَلَا Does not awalā remember yadhkuru [the] man l-insānu that We annā We created him khalaqnāhu before min before qablu while not walam he was yaku anything shayan
Does man not remember that We created him before, while he was nothing?
فَوَرَبِّكَ So by your Lord fawarabbika surely, We will gather them lanaḥshurannahum and the devils wal-shayāṭīna then thumma surely, We will bring them lanuḥ'ḍirannahum around ḥawla Hell jahannama bent (on) knees jithiyyan
So by your Lord, We will surely gather them and the devils; then We will bring them to be present around Hell upon their knees.1
ثُمَّ Then thumma surely, We will drag out lananziʿanna from min every kulli sect shīʿatin those of them ayyuhum (who were) worst ashaddu against ʿalā the Most Gracious l-raḥmāni (in) rebellion ʿitiyyan
Then We will surely extract from every sect those of them who were worst against the Most Merciful in insolence.
ثُمَّ Then thumma surely, We lanaḥnu know best aʿlamu [of] those who bi-alladhīna [they] hum (are) most worthy awlā therein bihā (of) being burnt ṣiliyyan
Then, surely it is We who are most knowing of those most worthy of burning therein.
وَإِن And (there is) not wa-in (any) of you minkum but illā (will be) passing over it wāriduhā (This) is kāna upon ʿalā your Lord rabbika an inevitability ḥatman decreed maqḍiyyan
And there is none of you except he will come to it.1 This is upon your Lord an inevitability decreed.
ثُمَّ Then thumma We will deliver nunajjī those who alladhīna feared (Allah) ittaqaw and We will leave wanadharu the wrongdoers l-ẓālimīna therein fīhā bent (on) knees jithiyyan
Then We will save those who feared Allāh and leave the wrongdoers within it, on their knees.
وَإِذَا And when wa-idhā are recited tut'lā to them ʿalayhim Our Verses āyātunā clear bayyinātin say qāla those who alladhīna disbelieved kafarū to those who lilladhīna believed āmanū Which ayyu (of) the two groups l-farīqayni (is) better khayrun (in) position maqāman and best wa-aḥsanu (in) assembly nadiyyan
And when Our verses are recited to them as clear evidences, those who disbelieve say to those who believe, "Which of [our] two parties is best in position and best in association?"1
وَكَمْ And how many wakam We destroyed ahlaknā before them qablahum of min a generation qarnin they hum (were) better aḥsanu (in) possessions athāthan and appearance wari'yan
And how many a generation have We destroyed before them who were better in possessions and [outward] appearance?
قُلْ Say qul Whoever man is kāna in fī [the] error l-ḍalālati then surely will extend falyamdud for him lahu the Most Gracious l-raḥmānu an extension maddan until ḥattā when idhā they see ra-aw what mā they were promised yūʿadūna either immā the punishment l-ʿadhāba or wa-immā the Hour l-sāʿata then they will know fasayaʿlamūna who man [he] huwa (is) worst sharrun (in) position makānan and weaker wa-aḍʿafu (in) forces jundan
Say, "Whoever is in error - let the Most Merciful extend for him an extension [in wealth and time] until, when they see that which they were promised - either punishment [in this world] or the Hour [of resurrection] - they will come to know who is worst in position and weaker in soldiers."
وَيَزِيدُ And Allah increases wayazīdu And Allah increases l-lahu those who alladhīna accept guidance ih'tadaw (in) guidance hudan And the everlasting wal-bāqiyātu good deeds l-ṣāliḥātu (are) better khayrun near ʿinda your Lord rabbika (for) reward thawāban and better wakhayrun (for) return maraddan
And Allāh increases those who were guided, in guidance, and the enduring good deeds are better to your Lord1 for reward and better for recourse.
أَفَرَءَيْتَ Then, have you seen afara-ayta he who alladhī disbelieved kafara in Our Verses biāyātinā and said waqāla Surely, I will be given laūtayanna wealth mālan and children wawaladan
Then, have you seen he who disbelieved in Our verses and said, "I will surely be given wealth and children [in the next life]"?
أَطَّلَعَ Has he looked aṭṭalaʿa (into) the unseen l-ghayba or ami has he taken ittakhadha from ʿinda the Most Gracious l-raḥmāni a promise ʿahdan
Has he looked into the unseen, or has he taken from the Most Merciful a promise?
كَلَّا ۚ Nay kallā We will record sanaktubu what mā he says yaqūlu and We will extend wanamuddu for him lahu from mina the punishment l-ʿadhābi extensively maddan
