Kāf, Hā, Yā, ʿAyn, Ṣād.1

— Saheeh International

ذِكْرُ

(A) mention

dhik'ru

رَحْمَتِ

(of the) Mercy

raḥmati

رَبِّكَ

(of) your Lord

rabbika

عَبْدَهُۥ

(to) His servant

ʿabdahu

زَكَرِيَّآ

Zakariya

zakariyyā

٢

[This is] a mention of the mercy of your Lord to His servant Zechariah

— Saheeh International

إِذْ

When

idh

نَادَىٰ

he called

nādā

رَبَّهُۥ

(to) his Lord

rabbahu

نِدَآءً

a call

nidāan

خَفِيًّۭا

secret

khafiyyan

٣

When he called to his Lord a private call [i.e., supplication].

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

رَبِّ

My Lord

rabbi

إِنِّى

Indeed, [I]

innī

وَهَنَ

(have) weakened

wahana

ٱلْعَظْمُ

my bones

l-ʿaẓmu

مِنِّى

my bones

minnī

وَٱشْتَعَلَ

and flared

wa-ish'taʿala

ٱلرَّأْسُ

(my) head

l-rasu

شَيْبًۭا

(with) white

shayban

وَلَمْ

and not

walam

أَكُنۢ

I have been

akun

بِدُعَآئِكَ

in (my) supplication (to) You

biduʿāika

رَبِّ

my Lord

rabbi

شَقِيًّۭا

unblessed

shaqiyyan

٤

He said, "My Lord, indeed my bones have weakened, and my head has filled1 with white, and never have I been in my supplication to You, my Lord, unhappy [i.e., disappointed].

— Saheeh International

وَإِنِّى

And indeed, I

wa-innī

خِفْتُ

[I] fear

khif'tu

ٱلْمَوَٰلِىَ

the successors

l-mawāliya

مِن

after me

min

وَرَآءِى

after me

warāī

وَكَانَتِ

and is

wakānati

ٱمْرَأَتِى

my wife

im'ra-atī

عَاقِرًۭا

barren

ʿāqiran

فَهَبْ

So give

fahab

لِى

[to] me

مِن

from

min

لَّدُنكَ

Yourself

ladunka

وَلِيًّۭا

an heir

waliyyan

٥

And indeed, I fear the successors1 after me, and my wife has been barren, so give me from Yourself an heir

— Saheeh International

يَرِثُنِى

Who will inherit me

yarithunī

وَيَرِثُ

and inherit

wayarithu

مِنْ

from

min

ءَالِ

(the) family

āli

يَعْقُوبَ ۖ

(of) Yaqub

yaʿqūba

وَٱجْعَلْهُ

And make him

wa-ij'ʿalhu

رَبِّ

my Lord

rabbi

رَضِيًّۭا

pleasing

raḍiyyan

٦

Who will inherit me1 and inherit from the family of Jacob. And make him, my Lord, pleasing [to You]."

— Saheeh International

يَـٰزَكَرِيَّآ

O Zakariya

yāzakariyyā

إِنَّا

Indeed, We

innā

نُبَشِّرُكَ

[We] give you glad tidings

nubashiruka

بِغُلَـٰمٍ

of a boy

bighulāmin

ٱسْمُهُۥ

his name

us'muhu

يَحْيَىٰ

(will be) Yahya

yaḥyā

لَمْ

not

lam

نَجْعَل

We (have) assigned

najʿal

لَّهُۥ

[for] it

lahu

مِن

before

min

قَبْلُ

before

qablu

سَمِيًّۭا

(this) name

samiyyan

٧

[He was told],1 "O Zechariah, indeed We give you good tidings of a boy whose name will be John. We have not assigned to any before [this] name."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

رَبِّ

My Lord

rabbi

أَنَّىٰ

How

annā

يَكُونُ

can

yakūnu

لِى

I have

غُلَـٰمٌۭ

a boy

ghulāmun

وَكَانَتِ

while is

wakānati

ٱمْرَأَتِى

my wife

im'ra-atī

عَاقِرًۭا

barren

ʿāqiran

وَقَدْ

and indeed

waqad

بَلَغْتُ

I have reached

balaghtu

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلْكِبَرِ

the old age

l-kibari

عِتِيًّۭا

extreme

ʿitiyyan

٨

He said, "My Lord, how will I have a boy when my wife has been barren and I have reached extreme old age?"

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

كَذَٰلِكَ

Thus

kadhālika

قَالَ

said

qāla

رَبُّكَ

your Lord

rabbuka

هُوَ

'It

huwa

عَلَىَّ

(is) easy for Me

ʿalayya

هَيِّنٌۭ

(is) easy for Me

hayyinun

وَقَدْ

and certainly

waqad

خَلَقْتُكَ

I (have) created you

khalaqtuka

مِن

before

min

قَبْلُ

before

qablu

وَلَمْ

while not

walam

تَكُ

you were

taku

شَيْـًۭٔا

anything.'

shayan

٩

[An angel] said, "Thus [it will be]; your Lord says, 'It is easy for Me, for I created you before, while you were nothing.'"

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

رَبِّ

My Lord

rabbi

ٱجْعَل

Make

ij'ʿal

لِّىٓ

for me

ءَايَةًۭ ۚ

a sign

āyatan

قَالَ

He said

qāla

ءَايَتُكَ

Your sign

āyatuka

أَلَّا

(is) that not

allā

تُكَلِّمَ

you will speak

tukallima

ٱلنَّاسَ

(to) the people

l-nāsa

ثَلَـٰثَ

(for) three

thalātha

لَيَالٍۢ

nights

layālin

سَوِيًّۭا

sound

sawiyyan

١٠

[Zechariah] said, "My Lord, make for me a sign." He said, "Your sign is that you will not speak to the people for three nights, [being] sound."1

— Saheeh International

فَخَرَجَ

Then he came out

fakharaja

عَلَىٰ

to

ʿalā

قَوْمِهِۦ

his people

qawmihi

مِنَ

from

mina

ٱلْمِحْرَابِ

the prayer chamber

l-miḥ'rābi

فَأَوْحَىٰٓ

and he signaled

fa-awḥā

إِلَيْهِمْ

to them

ilayhim

أَن

to

an

سَبِّحُوا۟

glorify (Allah)

sabbiḥū

بُكْرَةًۭ

(in) the morning

buk'ratan

وَعَشِيًّۭا

and (in) the evening

waʿashiyyan

١١

So he came out to his people from the prayer chamber and signaled to them to exalt [Allāh] in the morning and afternoon.

— Saheeh International

يَـٰيَحْيَىٰ

O Yahya

yāyaḥyā

خُذِ

Hold

khudhi

ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ

the Scripture

l-kitāba

بِقُوَّةٍۢ ۖ

with strength

biquwwatin

وَءَاتَيْنَـٰهُ

And We gave him

waātaynāhu

ٱلْحُكْمَ

[the] wisdom

l-ḥuk'ma

صَبِيًّۭا

(when he was) a child

ṣabiyyan

١٢

[Allāh said], "O John, take the Scripture [i.e., adhere to it] with determination." And We gave him judgement [while yet] a boy

— Saheeh International

وَحَنَانًۭا

And affection

waḥanānan

مِّن

from

min

لَّدُنَّا

Us

ladunnā

وَزَكَوٰةًۭ ۖ

and purity

wazakatan

وَكَانَ

and he was

wakāna

تَقِيًّۭا

righteous

taqiyyan

١٣

And affection from Us and purity, and he was fearing of Allāh

— Saheeh International

وَبَرًّۢا

And dutiful

wabarran

بِوَٰلِدَيْهِ

to his parents

biwālidayhi

وَلَمْ

and not

walam

يَكُن

he was

yakun

جَبَّارًا

a tyrant

jabbāran

عَصِيًّۭا

disobedient

ʿaṣiyyan

١٤

And dutiful to his parents, and he was not a disobedient tyrant.

— Saheeh International

وَسَلَـٰمٌ

And peace be

wasalāmun

عَلَيْهِ

upon him

ʿalayhi

يَوْمَ

(the) day

yawma

وُلِدَ

he was born

wulida

وَيَوْمَ

and (the) day

wayawma

يَمُوتُ

he dies

yamūtu

وَيَوْمَ

and (the) day

wayawma

يُبْعَثُ

he will be raised

yub'ʿathu

حَيًّۭا

alive

ḥayyan

١٥

And peace be upon him the day he was born and the day he dies and the day he is raised alive.

— Saheeh International

وَٱذْكُرْ

And mention

wa-udh'kur

فِى

in

ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ

the Book

l-kitābi

مَرْيَمَ

Maryam

maryama

إِذِ

when

idhi

ٱنتَبَذَتْ

she withdrew

intabadhat

مِنْ

from

min

أَهْلِهَا

her family

ahlihā

مَكَانًۭا

(to) a place

makānan

شَرْقِيًّۭا

eastern

sharqiyyan

١٦

And mention, [O Muḥammad], in the Book [the story of] Mary, when she withdrew from her family to a place toward the east.

— Saheeh International

فَٱتَّخَذَتْ

Then she took

fa-ittakhadhat

مِن

from them

min

دُونِهِمْ

from them

dūnihim

حِجَابًۭا

a screen

ḥijāban

فَأَرْسَلْنَآ

Then We sent

fa-arsalnā

إِلَيْهَا

to her

ilayhā

رُوحَنَا

Our Spirit

rūḥanā

فَتَمَثَّلَ

then he assumed for her the likeness

fatamathala

لَهَا

then he assumed for her the likeness

lahā

بَشَرًۭا

(of) a man

basharan

سَوِيًّۭا

well-proportioned

sawiyyan

١٧

And she took, in seclusion from them, a screen. Then We sent to her Our Angel [i.e., Gabriel], and he represented himself to her as a well-proportioned man.

— Saheeh International

قَالَتْ

She said

qālat

إِنِّىٓ

Indeed, I

innī

أَعُوذُ

[I] seek refuge

aʿūdhu

بِٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ

with the Most Gracious

bil-raḥmāni

مِنكَ

from you

minka

إِن

if

in

كُنتَ

you are

kunta

تَقِيًّۭا

God fearing

taqiyyan

١٨

She said, "Indeed, I seek refuge in the Most Merciful from you, [so leave me], if you should be fearing of Allāh."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

إِنَّمَآ

Only

innamā

أَنَا۠

I am

anā

رَسُولُ

a Messenger

rasūlu

رَبِّكِ

(from) your Lord

rabbiki

لِأَهَبَ

that I (may) bestow

li-ahaba

لَكِ

on you

laki

غُلَـٰمًۭا

a son

ghulāman

زَكِيًّۭا

pure

zakiyyan

١٩

He said, "I am only the messenger of your Lord to give you [news of] a pure boy [i.e., son]."

— Saheeh International

قَالَتْ

She said

qālat

أَنَّىٰ

How

annā

يَكُونُ

can be

yakūnu

لِى

for me

غُلَـٰمٌۭ

a son

ghulāmun

وَلَمْ

when not

walam

يَمْسَسْنِى

has touched me

yamsasnī

بَشَرٌۭ

a man

basharun

وَلَمْ

and not

walam

أَكُ

I am

aku

بَغِيًّۭا

unchaste

baghiyyan

٢٠

She said, "How can I have a boy while no man has touched me and I have not been unchaste?"

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

كَذَٰلِكِ

Thus

kadhāliki

قَالَ

said

qāla

رَبُّكِ

your Lord

rabbuki

هُوَ

'It

huwa

عَلَىَّ

(is) for Me

ʿalayya

هَيِّنٌۭ ۖ

easy

hayyinun

وَلِنَجْعَلَهُۥٓ

and so that We will make him

walinajʿalahu

ءَايَةًۭ

a sign

āyatan

لِّلنَّاسِ

for the mankind

lilnnāsi

وَرَحْمَةًۭ

and a Mercy

waraḥmatan

مِّنَّا ۚ

from Us

minnā

وَكَانَ

And (it) is

wakāna

أَمْرًۭا

a matter

amran

مَّقْضِيًّۭا

decreed.'

maqḍiyyan

٢١

He said, "Thus [it will be]; your Lord says, 'It is easy for Me, and We will make him a sign to the people and a mercy from Us. And it is a matter [already] decreed.'"

— Saheeh International

۞ فَحَمَلَتْهُ

So she conceived him

faḥamalathu

فَٱنتَبَذَتْ

and she withdrew

fa-intabadhat

بِهِۦ

with him

bihi

مَكَانًۭا

(to) a place

makānan

قَصِيًّۭا

remote

qaṣiyyan

٢٢

So she conceived him, and she withdrew with him to a remote place.

— Saheeh International

فَأَجَآءَهَا

Then drove her

fa-ajāahā

ٱلْمَخَاضُ

the pains of childbirth

l-makhāḍu

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

جِذْعِ

(the) trunk

jidh'ʿi

ٱلنَّخْلَةِ

(of) the date-palm

l-nakhlati

قَالَتْ

She said

qālat

يَـٰلَيْتَنِى

O! I wish

yālaytanī

مِتُّ

I (had) died

mittu

قَبْلَ

before

qabla

هَـٰذَا

this

hādhā

وَكُنتُ

and I was

wakuntu

نَسْيًۭا

(in) oblivion

nasyan

مَّنسِيًّۭا

forgotten

mansiyyan

٢٣

And the pains of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a palm tree. She said, "Oh, I wish I had died before this and was in oblivion, forgotten."

— Saheeh International

فَنَادَىٰهَا

So cried to her

fanādāhā

مِن

from

min

تَحْتِهَآ

beneath her

taḥtihā

أَلَّا

That (do) not

allā

تَحْزَنِى

grieve

taḥzanī

قَدْ

verily

qad

جَعَلَ

(has) placed

jaʿala

رَبُّكِ

your Lord

rabbuki

تَحْتَكِ

beneath you

taḥtaki

سَرِيًّۭا

a stream

sariyyan

٢٤

But he1 called her from below her, "Do not grieve; your Lord has provided beneath you a stream.

— Saheeh International

وَهُزِّىٓ

And shake

wahuzzī

إِلَيْكِ

towards you

ilayki

بِجِذْعِ

(the) trunk

bijidh'ʿi

ٱلنَّخْلَةِ

(of) the date-palm

l-nakhlati

تُسَـٰقِطْ

it will drop

tusāqiṭ

عَلَيْكِ

upon you

ʿalayki

رُطَبًۭا

fresh dates

ruṭaban

جَنِيًّۭا

ripe

janiyyan

٢٥

And shake toward you the trunk of the palm tree; it will drop upon you ripe, fresh dates.

— Saheeh International

فَكُلِى

So eat

fakulī

وَٱشْرَبِى

and drink

wa-ish'rabī

وَقَرِّى

and cool

waqarrī

عَيْنًۭا ۖ

(your) eyes

ʿaynan

فَإِمَّا

And if

fa-immā

تَرَيِنَّ

you see

tarayinna

مِنَ

from

mina

ٱلْبَشَرِ

human being

l-bashari

أَحَدًۭا

anyone

aḥadan

فَقُولِىٓ

then say

faqūlī

إِنِّى

Indeed, I

innī

نَذَرْتُ

[I] have vowed

nadhartu

لِلرَّحْمَـٰنِ

to the Most Gracious

lilrraḥmāni

صَوْمًۭا

a fast

ṣawman

فَلَنْ

so not

falan

أُكَلِّمَ

I will speak

ukallima

ٱلْيَوْمَ

today

l-yawma

إِنسِيًّۭا

(to any) human being

insiyyan

٢٦

So eat and drink and be contented. And if you see from among humanity anyone, say, 'Indeed, I have vowed to the Most Merciful abstention, so I will not speak today to [any] man.'"

— Saheeh International

فَأَتَتْ

Then she came

fa-atat

بِهِۦ

with him

bihi

قَوْمَهَا

(to) her people

qawmahā

تَحْمِلُهُۥ ۖ

carrying him

taḥmiluhu

قَالُوا۟

They said

qālū

يَـٰمَرْيَمُ

O Maryam

yāmaryamu

لَقَدْ

Certainly

laqad

جِئْتِ

you (have) brought

ji'ti

شَيْـًۭٔا

an amazing thing

shayan

فَرِيًّۭا

an amazing thing

fariyyan

٢٧

Then she brought him to her people, carrying him. They said, "O Mary, you have certainly done a thing unprecedented.

— Saheeh International

يَـٰٓأُخْتَ

O sister

yāukh'ta

هَـٰرُونَ

(of) Harun

hārūna

مَا

Not

كَانَ

was

kāna

أَبُوكِ

your father

abūki

ٱمْرَأَ

an evil man

im'ra-a

سَوْءٍۢ

an evil man

sawin

وَمَا

and not

wamā

كَانَتْ

was

kānat

أُمُّكِ

your mother

ummuki

بَغِيًّۭا

unchaste

baghiyyan

٢٨

O sister [i.e., descendant] of Aaron, your father was not a man of evil, nor was your mother unchaste."

— Saheeh International

فَأَشَارَتْ

Then she pointed

fa-ashārat

إِلَيْهِ ۖ

to him

ilayhi

قَالُوا۟

They said

qālū

كَيْفَ

How

kayfa

نُكَلِّمُ

(can) we speak

nukallimu

مَن

(to one) who

man

كَانَ

is

kāna

فِى

in

ٱلْمَهْدِ

the cradle

l-mahdi

صَبِيًّۭا

a child

ṣabiyyan

٢٩

So she pointed to him. They said, "How can we speak to one who is in the cradle a child?"

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

إِنِّى

Indeed, I am

innī

عَبْدُ

a slave

ʿabdu

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

ءَاتَىٰنِىَ

He gave me

ātāniya

ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ

the Scripture

l-kitāba

وَجَعَلَنِى

and made me

wajaʿalanī

نَبِيًّۭا

a Prophet

nabiyyan

٣٠

[Jesus] said, "Indeed, I am the servant of Allāh. He has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet.

— Saheeh International

وَجَعَلَنِى

And He (has) made me

wajaʿalanī

مُبَارَكًا

blessed

mubārakan

أَيْنَ

wherever

ayna

مَا

wherever

كُنتُ

I am

kuntu

وَأَوْصَـٰنِى

and has enjoined (on) me

wa-awṣānī

بِٱلصَّلَوٰةِ

[of] the prayer

bil-ṣalati

وَٱلزَّكَوٰةِ

and zakah

wal-zakati

مَا

as long as I am

دُمْتُ

as long as I am

dum'tu

حَيًّۭا

alive

ḥayyan

٣١

And He has made me blessed wherever I am and has enjoined upon me prayer and zakāh as long as I remain alive

— Saheeh International

وَبَرًّۢا

And dutiful

wabarran

بِوَٰلِدَتِى

to my mother

biwālidatī

وَلَمْ

and not

walam

يَجْعَلْنِى

He (has) made me

yajʿalnī

جَبَّارًۭا

insolent

jabbāran

شَقِيًّۭا

unblessed

shaqiyyan

٣٢

And [made me] dutiful to my mother, and He has not made me a wretched tyrant.

— Saheeh International

وَٱلسَّلَـٰمُ

And peace (be)

wal-salāmu

عَلَىَّ

on me

ʿalayya

يَوْمَ

(the) day

yawma

وُلِدتُّ

I was born

wulidttu

وَيَوْمَ

and (the) day

wayawma

أَمُوتُ

I will die

وَيَوْمَ

and (the) Day

wayawma

أُبْعَثُ

I will be raised

ub'ʿathu

حَيًّۭا

alive

ḥayyan

٣٣

And peace is on me the day I was born and the day I will die and the day I am raised alive."

— Saheeh International

ذَٰلِكَ

That

dhālika

عِيسَى

(was) Isa

ʿīsā

ٱبْنُ

(the) son

ub'nu

مَرْيَمَ ۚ

(of) Maryam

maryama

قَوْلَ

a statement

qawla

ٱلْحَقِّ

(of) truth

l-ḥaqi

ٱلَّذِى

that which

alladhī

فِيهِ

about it

fīhi

يَمْتَرُونَ

they dispute

yamtarūna

٣٤

That is Jesus, the son of Mary - the word of truth about which they are in dispute.

— Saheeh International

مَا

Not

كَانَ

(it) is

kāna

لِلَّهِ

for Allah

lillahi

أَن

that

an

يَتَّخِذَ

He should take

yattakhidha

مِن

any son

min

وَلَدٍۢ ۖ

any son

waladin

سُبْحَـٰنَهُۥٓ ۚ

Glory be to Him

sub'ḥānahu

إِذَا

When

idhā

قَضَىٰٓ

He decrees

qaḍā

أَمْرًۭا

a matter

amran

فَإِنَّمَا

then only

fa-innamā

يَقُولُ

He says

yaqūlu

لَهُۥ

to it

lahu

كُن

Be

kun

فَيَكُونُ

and it is

fayakūnu

٣٥

It is not [befitting] for Allāh to take a son; exalted is He!1 When He decrees an affair, He only says to it, "Be," and it is.

— Saheeh International

وَإِنَّ

And indeed

wa-inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

رَبِّى

(is) my Lord

rabbī

وَرَبُّكُمْ

and your Lord

warabbukum

فَٱعْبُدُوهُ ۚ

so worship Him

fa-uʿ'budūhu

هَـٰذَا

This

hādhā

صِرَٰطٌۭ

(is) a path

ṣirāṭun

مُّسْتَقِيمٌۭ

straight

mus'taqīmun

٣٦

[Jesus said], "And indeed, Allāh is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him. That is a straight path."

— Saheeh International

فَٱخْتَلَفَ

But differed

fa-ikh'talafa

ٱلْأَحْزَابُ

the sects

l-aḥzābu

مِنۢ

from among them

min

بَيْنِهِمْ ۖ

from among them

baynihim

فَوَيْلٌۭ

so woe

fawaylun

لِّلَّذِينَ

to those who

lilladhīna

كَفَرُوا۟

disbelieve

kafarū

مِن

from

min

مَّشْهَدِ

(the) witnessing

mashhadi

يَوْمٍ

(of) a Day

yawmin

عَظِيمٍ

great

ʿaẓīmin

٣٧

Then the factions differed [concerning Jesus] from among them, so woe to those who disbelieved - from the scene of a tremendous Day.

— Saheeh International

أَسْمِعْ

How they will hear

asmiʿ

بِهِمْ

How they will hear

bihim

وَأَبْصِرْ

and how (they will) see

wa-abṣir

يَوْمَ

(the) Day

yawma

يَأْتُونَنَا ۖ

they will come to Us

yatūnanā

لَـٰكِنِ

but

lākini

ٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَ

the wrongdoers

l-ẓālimūna

ٱلْيَوْمَ

today

l-yawma

فِى

(are) in

ضَلَـٰلٍۢ

error

ḍalālin

مُّبِينٍۢ

clear

mubīnin

٣٨

How [clearly] they will hear and see the Day they come to Us, but the wrongdoers today are in clear error.

— Saheeh International

وَأَنذِرْهُمْ

And warn them

wa-andhir'hum

يَوْمَ

(of the) Day

yawma

ٱلْحَسْرَةِ

(of) the Regret

l-ḥasrati

إِذْ

when

idh

قُضِىَ

has been decided

quḍiya

ٱلْأَمْرُ

the matter

l-amru

وَهُمْ

And they

wahum

فِى

(are) in

غَفْلَةٍۢ

heedlessness

ghaflatin

وَهُمْ

and they

wahum

لَا

(do) not

يُؤْمِنُونَ

believe

yu'minūna

٣٩

And warn them, [O Muḥammad], of the Day of Regret, when the matter will be concluded;1 and [yet], they are in [a state of] heedlessness, and they do not believe.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّا

Indeed, We

innā

نَحْنُ

[We]

naḥnu

نَرِثُ

[We] will inherit

narithu

ٱلْأَرْضَ

the earth

l-arḍa

وَمَنْ

and whoever

waman

عَلَيْهَا

(is) on it

ʿalayhā

وَإِلَيْنَا

and to Us

wa-ilaynā

يُرْجَعُونَ

they will be returned

yur'jaʿūna

٤٠

Indeed, it is We who will inherit the earth and whoever is on it, and to Us they will be returned.

— Saheeh International

وَٱذْكُرْ

And mention

wa-udh'kur

فِى

in

ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ

the Book

l-kitābi

إِبْرَٰهِيمَ ۚ

Ibrahim

ib'rāhīma

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed, he

innahu

كَانَ

was

kāna

صِدِّيقًۭا

a man of truth

ṣiddīqan

نَّبِيًّا

a Prophet

nabiyyan

٤١

And mention in the Book [the story of] Abraham. Indeed, he was a man of truth and a prophet.

— Saheeh International

إِذْ

When

idh

قَالَ

he said

qāla

لِأَبِيهِ

to his father

li-abīhi

يَـٰٓأَبَتِ

O my father

yāabati

لِمَ

Why

lima

تَعْبُدُ

(do) you worship

taʿbudu

مَا

that which

لَا

not

يَسْمَعُ

hears

yasmaʿu

وَلَا

and not

walā

يُبْصِرُ

sees

yub'ṣiru

وَلَا

and not

walā

يُغْنِى

benefits

yugh'nī

عَنكَ

[to] you

ʿanka

شَيْـًۭٔا

(in) anything

shayan

٤٢

[Mention] when he said to his father, "O my father, why do you worship that which does not hear and does not see and will not benefit you at all?

— Saheeh International

يَـٰٓأَبَتِ

O my father

yāabati

إِنِّى

Indeed, [I]

innī

قَدْ

verily

qad

جَآءَنِى

(has) come to me

jāanī

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلْعِلْمِ

the knowledge

l-ʿil'mi

مَا

what

لَمْ

not

lam

يَأْتِكَ

came to you

yatika

فَٱتَّبِعْنِىٓ

so follow me

fa-ittabiʿ'nī

أَهْدِكَ

I will guide you

ahdika

صِرَٰطًۭا

(to) the path

ṣirāṭan

سَوِيًّۭا

even

sawiyyan

٤٣

O my father, indeed there has come to me of knowledge that which has not come to you, so follow me; I will guide you to an even path.

— Saheeh International

يَـٰٓأَبَتِ

O my father

yāabati

لَا

(Do) not

تَعْبُدِ

worship

taʿbudi

ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنَ ۖ

the Shaitaan

l-shayṭāna

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنَ

the Shaitaan

l-shayṭāna

كَانَ

is

kāna

لِلرَّحْمَـٰنِ

to the Most Gracious

lilrraḥmāni

عَصِيًّۭا

disobedient

ʿaṣiyyan

٤٤

O my father, do not worship [i.e., obey] Satan. Indeed Satan has ever been, to the Most Merciful, disobedient.

— Saheeh International

يَـٰٓأَبَتِ

O my father

yāabati

إِنِّىٓ

Indeed, I

innī

أَخَافُ

[I] fear

akhāfu

أَن

that

an

يَمَسَّكَ

will touch you

yamassaka

عَذَابٌۭ

a punishment

ʿadhābun

مِّنَ

from

mina

ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ

the Most Gracious

l-raḥmāni

فَتَكُونَ

so you would be

fatakūna

لِلشَّيْطَـٰنِ

to the Shaitaan

lilshayṭāni

وَلِيًّۭا

a friend

waliyyan

٤٥

O my father, indeed I fear that there will touch you a punishment from the Most Merciful so you would be to Satan a companion [in Hellfire]."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

أَرَاغِبٌ

Do you hate

arāghibun

أَنتَ

Do you hate

anta

عَنْ

(from)

ʿan

ءَالِهَتِى

my gods

ālihatī

يَـٰٓإِبْرَٰهِيمُ ۖ

O Ibrahim

yāib'rāhīmu

لَئِن

Surely, if

la-in

لَّمْ

not

lam

تَنتَهِ

you desist

tantahi

لَأَرْجُمَنَّكَ ۖ

surely, I will stone you

la-arjumannaka

وَٱهْجُرْنِى

so leave me

wa-uh'jur'nī

مَلِيًّۭا

(for) a prolonged time

maliyyan

٤٦

[His father] said, "Have you no desire for my gods, O Abraham? If you do not desist, I will surely stone you, so avoid me a prolonged time."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

سَلَـٰمٌ

Peace (be)

salāmun

عَلَيْكَ ۖ

on you

ʿalayka

سَأَسْتَغْفِرُ

I will ask forgiveness

sa-astaghfiru

لَكَ

for you

laka

رَبِّىٓ ۖ

(from) my Lord

rabbī

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed, He

innahu

كَانَ

is

kāna

بِى

to me

حَفِيًّۭا

Ever Gracious

ḥafiyyan

٤٧

[Abraham] said, "Peace [i.e., safety] will be upon you.1 I will ask forgiveness for you of my Lord. Indeed, He is ever gracious to me.

— Saheeh International

وَأَعْتَزِلُكُمْ

And I will leave you

wa-aʿtazilukum

وَمَا

and what

wamā

تَدْعُونَ

you invoke

tadʿūna

مِن

besides

min

دُونِ

besides

dūni

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

وَأَدْعُوا۟

and I will invoke

wa-adʿū

رَبِّى

my Lord

rabbī

عَسَىٰٓ

May be

ʿasā

أَلَّآ

that not

allā

أَكُونَ

I will be

akūna

بِدُعَآءِ

in invocation

biduʿāi

رَبِّى

(to) my Lord

rabbī

شَقِيًّۭا

unblessed

shaqiyyan

٤٨

And I will leave you and those you invoke other than Allāh and will invoke1 my Lord. I expect that I will not be in invocation to my Lord unhappy [i.e., disappointed]."

— Saheeh International

فَلَمَّا

So when

falammā

ٱعْتَزَلَهُمْ

he left them

iʿ'tazalahum

وَمَا

and what

wamā

يَعْبُدُونَ

they worshipped

yaʿbudūna

مِن

besides Allah

min

دُونِ

besides Allah

dūni

ٱللَّهِ

besides Allah

l-lahi

وَهَبْنَا

[and] We bestowed

wahabnā

لَهُۥٓ

[to] him

lahu

إِسْحَـٰقَ

Isaac

is'ḥāqa

وَيَعْقُوبَ ۖ

and Yaqub

wayaʿqūba

وَكُلًّۭا

and each (of them)

wakullan

جَعَلْنَا

We made

jaʿalnā

نَبِيًّۭا

a Prophet

nabiyyan

٤٩

So when he had left them and those they worshipped other than Allāh, We gave him Isaac and Jacob, and each [of them] We made a prophet.

— Saheeh International

وَوَهَبْنَا

And We bestowed

wawahabnā

لَهُم

to them

lahum

مِّن

of

min

رَّحْمَتِنَا

Our Mercy

raḥmatinā

وَجَعَلْنَا

and We made

wajaʿalnā

لَهُمْ

for them

lahum

لِسَانَ

a truthful mention

lisāna

صِدْقٍ

a truthful mention

ṣid'qin

عَلِيًّۭا

high

ʿaliyyan

٥٠

And We gave them of Our mercy, and We made for them a mention [i.e., reputation] of high honor.

— Saheeh International

وَٱذْكُرْ

And mention

wa-udh'kur

فِى

in

ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ

the Book

l-kitābi

مُوسَىٰٓ ۚ

Musa

mūsā

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed, he

innahu

كَانَ

was

kāna

مُخْلَصًۭا

chosen

mukh'laṣan

وَكَانَ

and was

wakāna

رَسُولًۭا

a Messenger

rasūlan

نَّبِيًّۭا

a Prophet

nabiyyan

٥١

And mention in the Book, Moses. Indeed, he was chosen, and he was a messenger and a prophet.1

— Saheeh International

وَنَـٰدَيْنَـٰهُ

And We called him

wanādaynāhu

مِن

from

min

جَانِبِ

(the) side

jānibi

ٱلطُّورِ

(of) the Mount

l-ṭūri

ٱلْأَيْمَنِ

the right

l-aymani

وَقَرَّبْنَـٰهُ

and brought him near

waqarrabnāhu

نَجِيًّۭا

(for) conversation

najiyyan

٥٢

And We called him from the side of the mount1 at [his] right and brought him near, confiding [to him].

— Saheeh International

وَوَهَبْنَا

And We bestowed

wawahabnā

لَهُۥ

[to] him

lahu

مِن

from

min

رَّحْمَتِنَآ

Our Mercy

raḥmatinā

أَخَاهُ

his brother

akhāhu

هَـٰرُونَ

Harun

hārūna

نَبِيًّۭا

a Prophet

nabiyyan

٥٣

And We gave him out of Our mercy his brother Aaron as a prophet.

— Saheeh International

وَٱذْكُرْ

And mention

wa-udh'kur

فِى

in

ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ

the Book

l-kitābi

إِسْمَـٰعِيلَ ۚ

Ishmael

is'māʿīla

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed, he

innahu

كَانَ

was

kāna

صَادِقَ

true

ṣādiqa

ٱلْوَعْدِ

(to his) promise

l-waʿdi

وَكَانَ

and was

wakāna

رَسُولًۭا

a Messenger

rasūlan

نَّبِيًّۭا

a Prophet

nabiyyan

٥٤

And mention in the Book, Ishmael. Indeed, he was true to his promise, and he was a messenger and a prophet.

— Saheeh International

وَكَانَ

And he used

wakāna

يَأْمُرُ

(to) enjoin

yamuru

أَهْلَهُۥ

(on) his people

ahlahu

بِٱلصَّلَوٰةِ

the prayer

bil-ṣalati

وَٱلزَّكَوٰةِ

and zakah

wal-zakati

وَكَانَ

and was

wakāna

عِندَ

near

ʿinda

رَبِّهِۦ

his Lord

rabbihi

مَرْضِيًّۭا

pleasing

marḍiyyan

٥٥

And he used to enjoin on his people prayer and zakāh and was to his Lord pleasing [i.e., accepted by Him].

— Saheeh International

وَٱذْكُرْ

And mention

wa-udh'kur

فِى

in

ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ

the Book

l-kitābi

إِدْرِيسَ ۚ

Idris

id'rīsa

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed, he

innahu

كَانَ

was

kāna

صِدِّيقًۭا

truthful

ṣiddīqan

نَّبِيًّۭا

a Prophet

nabiyyan

٥٦

And mention in the Book, Idrees. Indeed, he was a man of truth and a prophet.

— Saheeh International

وَرَفَعْنَـٰهُ

And We raised him

warafaʿnāhu

مَكَانًا

(to) a position

makānan

عَلِيًّا

high

ʿaliyyan

٥٧

And We raised him to a high station.

— Saheeh International

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

Those

ulāika

ٱلَّذِينَ

(were) the ones whom

alladhīna

أَنْعَمَ

Allah bestowed favor

anʿama

ٱللَّهُ

Allah bestowed favor

l-lahu

عَلَيْهِم

upon them

ʿalayhim

مِّنَ

from (among)

mina

ٱلنَّبِيِّـۧنَ

the Prophets

l-nabiyīna

مِن

of

min

ذُرِّيَّةِ

(the) offspring

dhurriyyati

ءَادَمَ

(of) Adam

ādama

وَمِمَّنْ

and of those

wamimman

حَمَلْنَا

We carried

ḥamalnā

مَعَ

with

maʿa

نُوحٍۢ

Nuh

nūḥin

وَمِن

and of

wamin

ذُرِّيَّةِ

(the) offspring

dhurriyyati

إِبْرَٰهِيمَ

(of) Ibrahim

ib'rāhīma

وَإِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ

and Israel

wa-is'rāīla

وَمِمَّنْ

and of (those) whom

wamimman

هَدَيْنَا

We guided

hadaynā

وَٱجْتَبَيْنَآ ۚ

and We chose

wa-ij'tabaynā

إِذَا

When

idhā

تُتْلَىٰ

were recited

tut'lā

عَلَيْهِمْ

to them

ʿalayhim

ءَايَـٰتُ

(the) Verses

āyātu

ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ

(of) the Most Gracious

l-raḥmāni

خَرُّوا۟

they fell

kharrū

سُجَّدًۭا

prostrating

sujjadan

وَبُكِيًّۭا ۩

and weeping

wabukiyyan

٥٨

Those were the ones upon whom Allāh bestowed favor from among the prophets of the descendants of Adam and of those We carried [in the ship] with Noah, and of the descendants of Abraham and Israel [i.e., Jacob], and of those whom We guided and chose. When the verses of the Most Merciful were recited to them, they fell in prostration and weeping.

— Saheeh International

۞ فَخَلَفَ

Then succeeded

fakhalafa

مِنۢ

after them

min

بَعْدِهِمْ

after them

baʿdihim

خَلْفٌ

successors

khalfun

أَضَاعُوا۟

who neglected

aḍāʿū

ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ

the prayer

l-ṣalata

وَٱتَّبَعُوا۟

and they followed

wa-ittabaʿū

ٱلشَّهَوَٰتِ ۖ

the lusts

l-shahawāti

فَسَوْفَ

so soon

fasawfa

يَلْقَوْنَ

they will meet

yalqawna

غَيًّا

evil

ghayyan

٥٩

But there came after them successors [i.e., later generations] who neglected prayer and pursued desires; so they are going to meet evil1 -

— Saheeh International

إِلَّا

Except

illā

مَن

(one) who

man

تَابَ

repented

tāba

وَءَامَنَ

and believed

waāmana

وَعَمِلَ

and did

waʿamila

صَـٰلِحًۭا

good (deeds)

ṣāliḥan

فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

Then those

fa-ulāika

يَدْخُلُونَ

will enter

yadkhulūna

ٱلْجَنَّةَ

Paradise

l-janata

وَلَا

and not

walā

يُظْلَمُونَ

they will be wronged

yuẓ'lamūna

شَيْـًۭٔا

(in) anything

shayan

٦٠

Except those who repent, believe and do righteousness; for those will enter Paradise and will not be wronged at all.

— Saheeh International

جَنَّـٰتِ

Gardens

jannāti

عَدْنٍ

(of) Eden

ʿadnin

ٱلَّتِى

which

allatī

وَعَدَ

promised

waʿada

ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُ

the Most Gracious

l-raḥmānu

عِبَادَهُۥ

(to) His slaves

ʿibādahu

بِٱلْغَيْبِ ۚ

in the unseen

bil-ghaybi

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed, [it]

innahu

كَانَ

is

kāna

وَعْدُهُۥ

His promise

waʿduhu

مَأْتِيًّۭا

sure to come

matiyyan

٦١

[Therein are] gardens of perpetual residence which the Most Merciful has promised His servants in the unseen. Indeed, His promise has ever been eminent.1

— Saheeh International

لَّا

Not

يَسْمَعُونَ

they will hear

yasmaʿūna

فِيهَا

therein

fīhā

لَغْوًا

vain talk

laghwan

إِلَّا

but

illā

سَلَـٰمًۭا ۖ

peace

salāman

وَلَهُمْ

And for them

walahum

رِزْقُهُمْ

(is) their provision

riz'quhum

فِيهَا

therein

fīhā

بُكْرَةًۭ

morning

buk'ratan

وَعَشِيًّۭا

and evening

waʿashiyyan

٦٢

They will not hear therein any ill speech - only [greetings of] peace - and they will have their provision therein, morning and afternoon.

— Saheeh International

تِلْكَ

This

til'ka

ٱلْجَنَّةُ

(is) Paradise

l-janatu

ٱلَّتِى

which

allatī

نُورِثُ

We give (as) inheritance

nūrithu

مِنْ

[of] (to)

min

عِبَادِنَا

Our slaves

ʿibādinā

مَن

(the one) who

man

كَانَ

is

kāna

تَقِيًّۭا

righteous

taqiyyan

٦٣

That is Paradise, which We give as inheritance to those of Our servants who were fearing of Allāh.

— Saheeh International

وَمَا

And not

wamā

نَتَنَزَّلُ

we descend

natanazzalu

إِلَّا

except

illā

بِأَمْرِ

by (the) Command

bi-amri

رَبِّكَ ۖ

(of) your Lord

rabbika

لَهُۥ

To Him (belongs)

lahu

مَا

what

بَيْنَ

(is) before us

bayna

أَيْدِينَا

(is) before us

aydīnā

وَمَا

and what

wamā

خَلْفَنَا

(is) behind us

khalfanā

وَمَا

and what

wamā

بَيْنَ

(is) between

bayna

ذَٰلِكَ ۚ

that

dhālika

وَمَا

And not

wamā

كَانَ

is

kāna

رَبُّكَ

your Lord

rabbuka

نَسِيًّۭا

forgetful

nasiyyan

٦٤

[Gabriel said],1 "And we [angels] descend not except by the order of your Lord. To Him belongs that before us and that behind us and what is in between. And never is your Lord forgetful -

— Saheeh International

رَّبُّ

Lord

rabbu

ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ

(of) the heavens

l-samāwāti

وَٱلْأَرْضِ

and the earth

wal-arḍi

وَمَا

and whatever

wamā

بَيْنَهُمَا

(is) between both of them

baynahumā

فَٱعْبُدْهُ

so worship Him

fa-uʿ'bud'hu

وَٱصْطَبِرْ

and be constant

wa-iṣ'ṭabir

لِعِبَـٰدَتِهِۦ ۚ

in His worship

liʿibādatihi

هَلْ

Do

hal

تَعْلَمُ

you know

taʿlamu

لَهُۥ

for Him

lahu

سَمِيًّۭا

any similarity

samiyyan

٦٥

Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them - so worship Him and have patience for His worship. Do you know of any similarity to Him?"

— Saheeh International

وَيَقُولُ

And says

wayaqūlu

ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ

[the] man

l-insānu

أَءِذَا

What! When

a-idhā

مَا

What! When

مِتُّ

I am dead

mittu

لَسَوْفَ

surely will

lasawfa

أُخْرَجُ

I be brought forth

ukh'raju

حَيًّا

alive

ḥayyan

٦٦

And man [i.e., the disbeliever] says, "When I have died, am I going to be brought forth alive?"

— Saheeh International

أَوَلَا

Does not

awalā

يَذْكُرُ

remember

yadhkuru

ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ

[the] man

l-insānu

أَنَّا

that We

annā

خَلَقْنَـٰهُ

We created him

khalaqnāhu

مِن

before

min

قَبْلُ

before

qablu

وَلَمْ

while not

walam

يَكُ

he was

yaku

شَيْـًۭٔا

anything

shayan

٦٧

Does man not remember that We created him before, while he was nothing?

— Saheeh International

فَوَرَبِّكَ

So by your Lord

fawarabbika

لَنَحْشُرَنَّهُمْ

surely, We will gather them

lanaḥshurannahum

وَٱلشَّيَـٰطِينَ

and the devils

wal-shayāṭīna

ثُمَّ

then

thumma

لَنُحْضِرَنَّهُمْ

surely, We will bring them

lanuḥ'ḍirannahum

حَوْلَ

around

ḥawla

جَهَنَّمَ

Hell

jahannama

جِثِيًّۭا

bent (on) knees

jithiyyan

٦٨

So by your Lord, We will surely gather them and the devils; then We will bring them to be present around Hell upon their knees.1

— Saheeh International

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

لَنَنزِعَنَّ

surely, We will drag out

lananziʿanna

مِن

from

min

كُلِّ

every

kulli

شِيعَةٍ

sect

shīʿatin

أَيُّهُمْ

those of them

ayyuhum

أَشَدُّ

(who were) worst

ashaddu

عَلَى

against

ʿalā

ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ

the Most Gracious

l-raḥmāni

عِتِيًّۭا

(in) rebellion

ʿitiyyan

٦٩

Then We will surely extract from every sect those of them who were worst against the Most Merciful in insolence.

— Saheeh International

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

لَنَحْنُ

surely, We

lanaḥnu

أَعْلَمُ

know best

aʿlamu

بِٱلَّذِينَ

[of] those who

bi-alladhīna

هُمْ

[they]

hum

أَوْلَىٰ

(are) most worthy

awlā

بِهَا

therein

bihā

صِلِيًّۭا

(of) being burnt

ṣiliyyan

٧٠

Then, surely it is We who are most knowing of those most worthy of burning therein.

— Saheeh International

وَإِن

And (there is) not

wa-in

مِّنكُمْ

(any) of you

minkum

إِلَّا

but

illā

وَارِدُهَا ۚ

(will be) passing over it

wāriduhā

كَانَ

(This) is

kāna

عَلَىٰ

upon

ʿalā

رَبِّكَ

your Lord

rabbika

حَتْمًۭا

an inevitability

ḥatman

مَّقْضِيًّۭا

decreed

maqḍiyyan

٧١

And there is none of you except he will come to it.1 This is upon your Lord an inevitability decreed.

— Saheeh International

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

نُنَجِّى

We will deliver

nunajjī

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

ٱتَّقَوا۟

feared (Allah)

ittaqaw

وَّنَذَرُ

and We will leave

wanadharu

ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ

the wrongdoers

l-ẓālimīna

فِيهَا

therein

fīhā

جِثِيًّۭا

bent (on) knees

jithiyyan

٧٢

Then We will save those who feared Allāh and leave the wrongdoers within it, on their knees.

— Saheeh International

وَإِذَا

And when

wa-idhā

تُتْلَىٰ

are recited

tut'lā

عَلَيْهِمْ

to them

ʿalayhim

ءَايَـٰتُنَا

Our Verses

āyātunā

بَيِّنَـٰتٍۢ

clear

bayyinātin

قَالَ

say

qāla

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

كَفَرُوا۟

disbelieved

kafarū

لِلَّذِينَ

to those who

lilladhīna

ءَامَنُوٓا۟

believed

āmanū

أَىُّ

Which

ayyu

ٱلْفَرِيقَيْنِ

(of) the two groups

l-farīqayni

خَيْرٌۭ

(is) better

khayrun

مَّقَامًۭا

(in) position

maqāman

وَأَحْسَنُ

and best

wa-aḥsanu

نَدِيًّۭا

(in) assembly

nadiyyan

٧٣

And when Our verses are recited to them as clear evidences, those who disbelieve say to those who believe, "Which of [our] two parties is best in position and best in association?"1

— Saheeh International

وَكَمْ

And how many

wakam

أَهْلَكْنَا

We destroyed

ahlaknā

قَبْلَهُم

before them

qablahum

مِّن

of

min

قَرْنٍ

a generation

qarnin

هُمْ

they

hum

أَحْسَنُ

(were) better

aḥsanu

أَثَـٰثًۭا

(in) possessions

athāthan

وَرِءْيًۭا

and appearance

wari'yan

٧٤

And how many a generation have We destroyed before them who were better in possessions and [outward] appearance?

— Saheeh International

قُلْ

Say

qul

مَن

Whoever

man

كَانَ

is

kāna

فِى

in

ٱلضَّلَـٰلَةِ

[the] error

l-ḍalālati

فَلْيَمْدُدْ

then surely will extend

falyamdud

لَهُ

for him

lahu

ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُ

the Most Gracious

l-raḥmānu

مَدًّا ۚ

an extension

maddan

حَتَّىٰٓ

until

ḥattā

إِذَا

when

idhā

رَأَوْا۟

they see

ra-aw

مَا

what

يُوعَدُونَ

they were promised

yūʿadūna

إِمَّا

either

immā

ٱلْعَذَابَ

the punishment

l-ʿadhāba

وَإِمَّا

or

wa-immā

ٱلسَّاعَةَ

the Hour

l-sāʿata

فَسَيَعْلَمُونَ

then they will know

fasayaʿlamūna

مَنْ

who

man

هُوَ

[he]

huwa

شَرٌّۭ

(is) worst

sharrun

مَّكَانًۭا

(in) position

makānan

وَأَضْعَفُ

and weaker

wa-aḍʿafu

جُندًۭا

(in) forces

jundan

٧٥

Say, "Whoever is in error - let the Most Merciful extend for him an extension [in wealth and time] until, when they see that which they were promised - either punishment [in this world] or the Hour [of resurrection] - they will come to know who is worst in position and weaker in soldiers."

— Saheeh International

وَيَزِيدُ

And Allah increases

wayazīdu

ٱللَّهُ

And Allah increases

l-lahu

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

ٱهْتَدَوْا۟

accept guidance

ih'tadaw

هُدًۭى ۗ

(in) guidance

hudan

وَٱلْبَـٰقِيَـٰتُ

And the everlasting

wal-bāqiyātu

ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتُ

good deeds

l-ṣāliḥātu

خَيْرٌ

(are) better

khayrun

عِندَ

near

ʿinda

رَبِّكَ

your Lord

rabbika

ثَوَابًۭا

(for) reward

thawāban

وَخَيْرٌۭ

and better

wakhayrun

مَّرَدًّا

(for) return

maraddan

٧٦

And Allāh increases those who were guided, in guidance, and the enduring good deeds are better to your Lord1 for reward and better for recourse.

— Saheeh International

أَفَرَءَيْتَ

Then, have you seen

afara-ayta

ٱلَّذِى

he who

alladhī

كَفَرَ

disbelieved

kafara

بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا

in Our Verses

biāyātinā

وَقَالَ

and said

waqāla

لَأُوتَيَنَّ

Surely, I will be given

laūtayanna

مَالًۭا

wealth

mālan

وَوَلَدًا

and children

wawaladan

٧٧

Then, have you seen he who disbelieved in Our verses and said, "I will surely be given wealth and children [in the next life]"?

— Saheeh International

أَطَّلَعَ

Has he looked

aṭṭalaʿa

ٱلْغَيْبَ

(into) the unseen

l-ghayba

أَمِ

or

ami

ٱتَّخَذَ

has he taken

ittakhadha

عِندَ

from

ʿinda

ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ

the Most Gracious

l-raḥmāni

عَهْدًۭا

a promise

ʿahdan

٧٨

Has he looked into the unseen, or has he taken from the Most Merciful a promise?

— Saheeh International

كَلَّا ۚ

Nay

kallā

سَنَكْتُبُ

We will record

sanaktubu

مَا

what

يَقُولُ

he says

yaqūlu

وَنَمُدُّ

and We will extend

wanamuddu

لَهُۥ

for him

lahu

مِنَ

from

mina

ٱلْعَذَابِ

the punishment

l-ʿadhābi

مَدًّۭا

extensively

maddan

٧٩

No! We will record what he says and extend [i.e., increase] for him from the punishment extensively.

— Saheeh International

وَنَرِثُهُۥ

And We will inherit (from) him

wanarithuhu

مَا

what

يَقُولُ

he says

yaqūlu

وَيَأْتِينَا

and he will come to Us

wayatīnā

فَرْدًۭا

alone

fardan

٨٠

And We will inherit him [in] what he mentions,1 and he will come to Us alone.

— Saheeh International

وَٱتَّخَذُوا۟

And they have taken

wa-ittakhadhū

مِن

besides Allah

min

دُونِ

besides Allah

dūni

ٱللَّهِ

besides Allah

l-lahi

ءَالِهَةًۭ

gods

ālihatan

لِّيَكُونُوا۟

that they may be

liyakūnū

لَهُمْ

for them

lahum

عِزًّۭا

an honor

ʿizzan

٨١

And they have taken besides Allāh [false] deities that they would be for them [a source of] honor.

— Saheeh International

كَلَّا ۚ

Nay

kallā

سَيَكْفُرُونَ

they will deny

sayakfurūna

بِعِبَادَتِهِمْ

their worship (of them)

biʿibādatihim

وَيَكُونُونَ

and they will be

wayakūnūna

عَلَيْهِمْ

against them

ʿalayhim

ضِدًّا

opponents

ḍiddan

٨٢

No! They [i.e., those "gods"] will deny their worship of them and will be against them opponents [on the Day of Judgement].

— Saheeh International

أَلَمْ

Do not

alam

تَرَ

you see

tara

أَنَّآ

that We

annā

أَرْسَلْنَا

[We] have sent

arsalnā

ٱلشَّيَـٰطِينَ

the devils

l-shayāṭīna

عَلَى

upon

ʿalā

ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ

the disbelievers

l-kāfirīna

تَؤُزُّهُمْ

inciting them

ta-uzzuhum

أَزًّۭا

(with) incitement

azzan

٨٣

Do you not see that We have sent the devils upon the disbelievers, inciting them [to evil] with [constant] incitement?

— Saheeh International

فَلَا

So (do) not

falā

تَعْجَلْ

make haste

taʿjal

عَلَيْهِمْ ۖ

against them

ʿalayhim

إِنَّمَا

Only

innamā

نَعُدُّ

We count

naʿuddu

لَهُمْ

for them

lahum

عَدًّۭا

a number

ʿaddan

٨٤

So be not impatient over them. We only count out [i.e., allow] to them a [limited] number.1

— Saheeh International

يَوْمَ

(The) Day

yawma

نَحْشُرُ

We will gather

naḥshuru

ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ

the righteous

l-mutaqīna

إِلَى

to

ilā

ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ

the Most Gracious

l-raḥmāni

وَفْدًۭا

(as) a delegation

wafdan

٨٥

On the Day We will gather the righteous to the Most Merciful as a delegation

— Saheeh International

وَنَسُوقُ

And We will drive

wanasūqu

ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ

the criminals

l-muj'rimīna

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

جَهَنَّمَ

Hell

jahannama

وِرْدًۭا

thirsty

wir'dan

٨٦

And will drive the criminals to Hell in thirst

— Saheeh International

لَّا

Not

يَمْلِكُونَ

they will have the power

yamlikūna

ٱلشَّفَـٰعَةَ

(of) the intercession

l-shafāʿata

إِلَّا

except

illā

مَنِ

(he) who

mani

ٱتَّخَذَ

has taken

ittakhadha

عِندَ

from

ʿinda

ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ

the Most Gracious

l-raḥmāni

عَهْدًۭا

a covenant

ʿahdan

٨٧

None will have [power of] intercession except he who had taken from the Most Merciful a covenant.1

— Saheeh International

وَقَالُوا۟

And they say

waqālū

ٱتَّخَذَ

Has taken

ittakhadha

ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُ

the Most Gracious

l-raḥmānu

وَلَدًۭا

a son

waladan

٨٨

And they say, "The Most Merciful has taken [for Himself] a son."

— Saheeh International

لَّقَدْ

Verily

laqad

جِئْتُمْ

you have put forth

ji'tum

شَيْـًٔا

a thing

shayan

إِدًّۭا

atrocious

iddan

٨٩

You have done an atrocious thing.

— Saheeh International

تَكَادُ

Almost

takādu

ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتُ

the heavens

l-samāwātu

يَتَفَطَّرْنَ

get torn

yatafaṭṭarna

مِنْهُ

therefrom

min'hu

وَتَنشَقُّ

and splits asunder

watanshaqqu

ٱلْأَرْضُ

the earth

l-arḍu

وَتَخِرُّ

and collapse

watakhirru

ٱلْجِبَالُ

the mountain

l-jibālu

هَدًّا

(in) devastation

haddan

٩٠

The heavens almost rupture therefrom and the earth splits open and the mountains collapse in devastation

— Saheeh International

أَن

That

an

دَعَوْا۟

they invoke

daʿaw

لِلرَّحْمَـٰنِ

to the Most Gracious

lilrraḥmāni

وَلَدًۭا

a son

waladan

٩١

That they attribute to the Most Merciful a son.

— Saheeh International

وَمَا

And not

wamā

يَنۢبَغِى

is appropriate

yanbaghī

لِلرَّحْمَـٰنِ

for the Most Gracious

lilrraḥmāni

أَن

that

an

يَتَّخِذَ

He should take

yattakhidha

وَلَدًا

a son

waladan

٩٢

And it is not appropriate for the Most Merciful that He should take a son.

— Saheeh International

إِن

Not

in

كُلُّ

all

kullu

مَن

who

man

فِى

(are) in

ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ

the heavens

l-samāwāti

وَٱلْأَرْضِ

and the earth

wal-arḍi

إِلَّآ

but

illā

ءَاتِى

(will) come

ātī

ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ

(to) the Most Gracious

l-raḥmāni

عَبْدًۭا

(as) a slave

ʿabdan

٩٣

There is no one in the heavens and earth but that he comes to the Most Merciful as a servant.

— Saheeh International

لَّقَدْ

Verily

laqad

أَحْصَىٰهُمْ

He has enumerated them

aḥṣāhum

وَعَدَّهُمْ

and counted them

waʿaddahum

عَدًّۭا

a counting

ʿaddan

٩٤

He has enumerated them and counted them a [full] counting.

— Saheeh International

وَكُلُّهُمْ

And all of them

wakulluhum

ءَاتِيهِ

(will) come (to) Him

ātīhi

يَوْمَ

(on the) Day

yawma

ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ

(of) the Resurrection

l-qiyāmati

فَرْدًا

alone

fardan

٩٥

And all of them are coming to Him on the Day of Resurrection alone.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

ءَامَنُوا۟

believed

āmanū

وَعَمِلُوا۟

and did

waʿamilū

ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ

good deeds

l-ṣāliḥāti

سَيَجْعَلُ

will bestow

sayajʿalu

لَهُمُ

for them

lahumu

ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُ

the Most Gracious

l-raḥmānu

وُدًّۭا

affection

wuddan

٩٦

Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds - the Most Merciful will appoint for them affection.1

— Saheeh International

فَإِنَّمَا

So, only

fa-innamā

يَسَّرْنَـٰهُ

We (have) made it easy

yassarnāhu

بِلِسَانِكَ

in your tongue

bilisānika

لِتُبَشِّرَ

that you may give glad tidings

litubashira

بِهِ

with it

bihi

ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ

(to) the righteous

l-mutaqīna

وَتُنذِرَ

and warn

watundhira

بِهِۦ

with it

bihi

قَوْمًۭا

a people

qawman

لُّدًّۭا

hostile

luddan

٩٧

So, [O Muḥammad], We have only made it [i.e., the Qur’ān] easy in your tongue [i.e., the Arabic language] that you may give good tidings thereby to the righteous and warn thereby a hostile people.

— Saheeh International

وَكَمْ

And how many

wakam

أَهْلَكْنَا

We (have) destroyed

ahlaknā

قَبْلَهُم

before them

qablahum

مِّن

of

min

قَرْنٍ

a generation

qarnin

هَلْ

Can

hal

تُحِسُّ

you perceive

tuḥissu

مِنْهُم

of them

min'hum

مِّنْ

any

min

أَحَدٍ

one

aḥadin

أَوْ

or

aw

تَسْمَعُ

hear

tasmaʿu

لَهُمْ

from them

lahum

رِكْزًۢا

a sound

rik'zan

٩٨

And how many have We destroyed before them of generations? Do you perceive of them anyone or hear from them a sound?

— Saheeh International
