حَتَّىٰٓ Until ḥattā when idhā he reached balagha (the) setting place maghriba (of) the sun l-shamsi he found it wajadahā setting taghrubu in fī a spring ʿaynin (of) dark mud ḥami-atin and he found wawajada near it ʿindahā a community qawman We said qul'nā O Dhul-qarnain yādhā O Dhul-qarnain l-qarnayni Either immā [that] an you punish tuʿadhiba or wa-immā [that] an you take tattakhidha [in] them fīhim (with) goodness ḥus'nan
Until, when he reached the setting of the sun [i.e., the west], he found it [as if] setting in a body of dark water, and he found near it a people. We [i.e., Allāh] said, "O Dhul-Qarnayn, either you punish [them] or else adopt among them [a way of] goodness."
قَالَ He said qāla As for ammā (one) who man wrongs ẓalama then soon fasawfa we will punish him nuʿadhibuhu Then thumma he will be returned yuraddu to ilā his Lord rabbihi and He will punish him fayuʿadhibuhu (with) a punishment ʿadhāban terrible nuk'ran
He said, "As for one who wrongs, we will punish him. Then he will be returned to his Lord, and He will punish him with a terrible punishment [i.e., Hellfire].
وَأَمَّا But as for wa-ammā (one) who man believes āmana and does waʿamila righteous (deeds) ṣāliḥan then for him falahu (is) a reward jazāan good l-ḥus'nā And we will speak wasanaqūlu to him lahu from min our command amrinā (with) ease yus'ran
But as for one who believes and does righteousness, he will have a reward of the best [i.e., Paradise], and we [i.e., Dhul-Qarnayn] will speak to him from our command with ease."
