Al-'Isrā
The Night Journey
﷽
الإسراء
سُبْحَـٰنَ Exalted sub'ḥāna (is) the One Who alladhī took asrā His servant biʿabdihi (by) night laylan from mina Al-Masjid Al-Haraam l-masjidi Al-Masjid Al-Haraam l-ḥarāmi to ilā Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa l-masjidi Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa l-aqṣā which alladhī We blessed bāraknā its surroundings ḥawlahu that We may show him linuriyahu of min Our Signs āyātinā Indeed He innahu He huwa (is) the All-Hearer l-samīʿu the All-Seer l-baṣīru
Exalted1 is He who took His Servant [i.e., Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ)] by night from al-Masjid al-Ḥarām to al-Masjid al-Aqṣā,2 whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him of Our signs. Indeed, He is the Hearing,3 the Seeing.4
وَءَاتَيْنَا And We gave waātaynā Musa mūsā the Book l-kitāba and made it wajaʿalnāhu a guidance hudan for the Children libanī (of) Israel is'rāīla That not allā you take tattakhidhū other than Me min other than Me dūnī (as) a Disposer of affairs wakīlan
And We gave Moses the Scripture and made it a guidance for the Children of Israel that you not take other than Me as Disposer of affairs,1
ذُرِّيَّةَ Offsprings dhurriyyata (of one) who man We carried ḥamalnā with maʿa Nuh nūḥin Indeed, he innahu was kāna a servant ʿabdan grateful shakūran
O descendants of those We carried [in the ship] with Noah. Indeed, he was a grateful servant.
وَقَضَيْنَآ And We decreed waqaḍaynā for ilā (the) Children banī (of) Israel is'rāīla in fī the Book l-kitābi Surely you will cause corruption latuf'sidunna in fī the earth l-arḍi twice marratayni and surely you will reach walataʿlunna haughtiness ʿuluwwan great kabīran
And We conveyed1 to the Children of Israel in the Scripture that, "You will surely cause corruption on the earth twice, and you will surely reach [a degree of] great haughtiness."
فَإِذَا So when fa-idhā came jāa (the) promise waʿdu (for) the first of the two ūlāhumā We raised baʿathnā against you ʿalaykum servants ʿibādan of Ours lanā those of great military might ulī those of great military might basin those of great military might shadīdin and they entered fajāsū the inner most part khilāla (of) the homes l-diyāri and (it) was wakāna a promise waʿdan fulfilled mafʿūlan
So when the [time of] promise came for the first of them,1 We sent against you servants of Ours - those of great military might, and they probed [even] into the homes,2 and it was a promise fulfilled.
ثُمَّ Then thumma We gave back radadnā to you lakumu the return victory l-karata over them ʿalayhim And We reinforced you wa-amdadnākum with the wealth bi-amwālin and sons wabanīna and made you wajaʿalnākum more akthara numerous nafīran
Then We gave back to you a return victory over them. And We reinforced you with wealth and sons and made you more numerous in manpower.
إِنْ If in you do good aḥsantum you do good aḥsantum for yourselves li-anfusikum and if wa-in you do evil asatum then it is for it falahā So when fa-idhā came jāa promise waʿdu the last l-ākhirati to sadden liyasūū your faces wujūhakum and to enter waliyadkhulū the Masjid l-masjida just as kamā they (had) entered it dakhalūhu first awwala time marratin and to destroy waliyutabbirū what mā they had conquered ʿalaw (with) destruction tatbīran
[And said], "If you do good, you do good for yourselves; and if you do evil, [you do it] to them [i.e., yourselves]." Then when the final [i.e., second] promise came, [We sent your enemies] to sadden your faces and to enter the masjid [i.e., the temple in Jerusalem], as they entered it the first time, and to destroy what they had taken over with [total] destruction.
عَسَىٰ (It) may be ʿasā that your Lord rabbukum that your Lord an (may) have mercy upon you yarḥamakum But if wa-in you return ʿudttum We will return ʿud'nā And We have made wajaʿalnā Hell jahannama for the disbelievers lil'kāfirīna a prison-bed ḥaṣīran
[Then Allāh said], "It is expected, [if you repent], that your Lord will have mercy upon you. But if you return [to sin], We will return [to punishment]. And We have made Hell, for the disbelievers, a prison-bed."
إِنَّ Indeed inna this hādhā the Quran l-qur'āna guides yahdī to that lillatī which hiya (is) most straight aqwamu and gives glad tidings wayubashiru to the believers l-mu'minīna those who alladhīna do yaʿmalūna the righteous deeds l-ṣāliḥāti that anna for them lahum (is) a reward ajran great kabīran
Indeed, this Qur’ān guides to that which is most suitable and gives good tidings to the believers who do righteous deeds that they will have a great reward
وَأَنَّ And that wa-anna those who alladhīna (do) not lā believe yu'minūna in the Hereafter bil-ākhirati We have prepared aʿtadnā for them lahum a punishment ʿadhāban painful alīman
And that those who do not believe in the Hereafter - We have prepared for them a painful punishment.
وَيَدْعُ And prays wayadʿu the man l-insānu for evil bil-shari (as) he prays duʿāahu for the good bil-khayri And is wakāna the man l-insānu ever hasty ʿajūlan
And man supplicates for evil [when angry] as he supplicates for good, and man is ever hasty.1
وَجَعَلْنَا And We have made wajaʿalnā the night al-layla and the day wal-nahāra (as) two signs āyatayni Then We erased famaḥawnā (the) sign āyata (of) the night al-layli and We made wajaʿalnā (the) sign āyata (of) the day l-nahāri visible mub'ṣiratan that you may seek litabtaghū bounty faḍlan from min your Lord rabbikum and that you may know walitaʿlamū (the) number ʿadada (of) the years l-sinīna and the account wal-ḥisāba And every wakulla thing shayin We have explained it faṣṣalnāhu (in) detail tafṣīlan
And We have made the night and day two signs, and We erased the sign of the night and made the sign of the day visible1 that you may seek bounty from your Lord and may know the number of years and the account [of time]. And everything We have set out in detail.
وَكُلَّ And (for) every wakulla man insānin We have fastened to him alzamnāhu his fate ṭāirahu in fī his neck ʿunuqihi and We will bring forth wanukh'riju for him lahu (on the) Day yawma (of) the Resurrection l-qiyāmati a record kitāban which he will find yalqāhu wide open manshūran
And [for] every person We have imposed his fate upon his neck,1 and We will produce for him on the Day of Resurrection a record which he will encounter spread open.
ٱقْرَأْ Read iq'ra your record kitābaka Sufficient kafā (is) yourself binafsika today l-yawma against you ʿalayka (as) accountant ḥasīban
[It will be said], "Read your record. Sufficient is yourself against you this Day as accountant."
مَّنِ Whoever mani (is) guided ih'tadā then only fa-innamā he is guided yahtadī for his soul linafsihi And whoever waman goes astray ḍalla then only fa-innamā he goes astray yaḍillu against it ʿalayhā And not walā will bear taziru a bearer of burden wāziratun burden wiz'ra (of) another ukh'rā And not wamā We kunnā are to punish muʿadhibīna until ḥattā We have sent nabʿatha a Messenger rasūlan
Whoever is guided is only guided for [the benefit of] his soul. And whoever errs only errs against it. And no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another. And never would We punish until We sent a messenger.
وَإِذَآ And when wa-idhā We intend aradnā that an We destroy nuh'lika a town qaryatan We order amarnā its wealthy people mut'rafīhā but they defiantly disobey fafasaqū therein fīhā so (is) proved true faḥaqqa against it ʿalayhā the word l-qawlu and We destroy it fadammarnāhā (with) destruction tadmīran
And when We intend to destroy a city, We command its affluent1 but they defiantly disobey therein; so the word [i.e., deserved decree] comes into effect upon it, and We destroy it with [complete] destruction.
وَكَمْ And how many wakam We destroyed ahlaknā from mina the generations l-qurūni after min after baʿdi Nuh nūḥin And sufficient wakafā (is) your Lord birabbika concerning the sins bidhunūbi (of) His servants ʿibādihi All-Aware khabīran All-Seer baṣīran
And how many have We destroyed from the generations after Noah. And sufficient is your Lord, concerning the sins of His servants, as Aware and Seeing.
مَّن Whoever man should kāna desire yurīdu the immediate l-ʿājilata We hasten ʿajjalnā for him lahu in it fīhā what mā We will nashāu to whom liman We intend nurīdu Then thumma We have made jaʿalnā for him lahu Hell jahannama he will burn yaṣlāhā disgraced madhmūman rejected madḥūran
Whoever should desire the immediate1 - We hasten for him from it what We will to whom We intend. Then We have made for him Hell, which he will [enter to] burn, censured and banished.
وَمَنْ And whoever waman desires arāda the Hereafter l-ākhirata and exerts wasaʿā for it lahā the effort saʿyahā while he wahuwa (is) a believer mu'minun then those fa-ulāika [are] kāna their effort saʿyuhum (is) appreciated mashkūran
But whoever desires the Hereafter and exerts the effort due to it while he is a believer - it is those whose effort is ever appreciated [by Allāh].
كُلًّۭا (To) each kullan We extend numiddu (to) these hāulāi and (to) these wahāulāi from min (the) gift ʿaṭāi (of) your Lord rabbika And not wamā is kāna (the) gift ʿaṭāu (of) your Lord rabbika restricted maḥẓūran
To each [category] We extend - to these and to those - from the gift of your Lord. And never has the gift of your Lord been restricted.
ٱنظُرْ See unẓur how kayfa We preferred faḍḍalnā some of them baʿḍahum over ʿalā others baʿḍin And surely the Hereafter walalākhiratu (is) greater akbaru (in) degrees darajātin and greater wa-akbaru (in) excellence tafḍīlan
Look how We have favored [in provision] some of them over others. But the Hereafter is greater in degrees [of difference] and greater in distinction.
لَّا (Do) not lā make tajʿal with maʿa Allah l-lahi god ilāhan another ākhara lest you will sit fataqʿuda disgraced madhmūman forsaken makhdhūlan
Do not make [as equal] with Allāh another deity and [thereby] become censured and forsaken.
۞ وَقَضَىٰ And has decreed waqaḍā your Lord rabbuka that (do) not allā worship taʿbudū except illā Him Alone iyyāhu and to the parents wabil-wālidayni (be) good iḥ'sānan Whether immā reach yablughanna with you ʿindaka the old age l-kibara one of them aḥaduhumā or aw both of them kilāhumā then (do) not falā say taqul to both of them lahumā a word of disrespect uffin and (do) not walā repel them tanharhumā but speak waqul to them lahumā a word qawlan noble karīman
And your Lord has decreed that you worship not except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so much as], "uff,"1 and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word.
وَٱخْفِضْ And lower wa-ikh'fiḍ to them lahumā (the) wing janāḥa (of) humility l-dhuli (out) of mina [the] mercy l-raḥmati and say waqul My Lord rabbi Have mercy on both of them ir'ḥamhumā as kamā they brought me up rabbayānī (when I was) small ṣaghīran
And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, "My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was] small."
رَّبُّكُمْ Your Lord rabbukum (is) most knowing aʿlamu of what bimā (is) in fī yourselves nufūsikum If in you are takūnū righteous ṣāliḥīna then indeed, He fa-innahu is kāna to those who often turn (to Him) lil'awwābīna Most Forgiving ghafūran
Your Lord is most knowing of what is within yourselves. If you should be righteous [in intention] - then indeed He is ever, to the often returning [to Him], Forgiving.1
وَءَاتِ And give waāti the relatives dhā the relatives l-qur'bā his right ḥaqqahu and the needy wal-mis'kīna and the wayfarer wa-ib'na and the wayfarer l-sabīli and (do) not walā spend tubadhir wastefully tabdhīran
And give the relative his right, and [also] the poor and the traveler, and do not spend wastefully.1
إِنَّ Indeed inna the spendthrifts l-mubadhirīna are kānū brothers ikh'wāna (of) the devils l-shayāṭīni And is wakāna the Shaitaan l-shayṭānu to his Lord lirabbihi ungrateful kafūran
Indeed, the wasteful are brothers of the devils, and ever has Satan been to his Lord ungrateful.
وَإِمَّا And if wa-immā you turn away tuʿ'riḍanna from them ʿanhumu seeking ib'tighāa mercy raḥmatin from min your Lord rabbika which you expect tarjūhā then say faqul to them lahum a word qawlan gentle maysūran
And if you [must] turn away from them [i.e., the needy] awaiting mercy from your Lord which you expect,1 then speak to them a gentle word.
وَلَا And (do) not walā make tajʿal your hand yadaka chained maghlūlatan to ilā your neck ʿunuqika and not walā extend it tabsuṭ'hā (to its) utmost kulla reach l-basṭi so that you sit fataqʿuda blameworthy malūman insolvent maḥsūran
And do not make your hand [as] chained to your neck1 or extend it completely2 and [thereby] become blamed and insolvent.
إِنَّ Indeed inna your Lord rabbaka extends yabsuṭu the provision l-riz'qa for whom liman He wills yashāu and straitens wayaqdiru Indeed, He innahu is kāna of His slaves biʿibādihi All-Aware khabīran All-Seer baṣīran
Indeed, your Lord extends provision for whom He wills and restricts [it]. Indeed He is ever, concerning His servants, Aware and Seeing.
وَلَا And (do) not walā kill taqtulū your children awlādakum (for) fear khashyata (of) poverty im'lāqin We naḥnu (We) provide for them narzuquhum and for you wa-iyyākum Indeed inna their killing qatlahum is kāna a sin khiṭ'an great kabīran
And do not kill your children for fear of poverty. We provide for them and for you. Indeed, their killing is ever a great sin.
وَلَا And (do) not walā go near taqrabū adultery l-zinā Indeed, it innahu is kāna an immorality fāḥishatan and (an) evil wasāa way sabīlan
And do not approach unlawful sexual intercourse.1 Indeed, it is ever an immorality and is evil as a way.
وَلَا And (do) not walā kill taqtulū the soul l-nafsa which allatī Allah has forbidden ḥarrama Allah has forbidden l-lahu except illā by right bil-ḥaqi And whoever waman (is) killed qutila wrongfully maẓlūman verily faqad We have made jaʿalnā for his heir liwaliyyihi an authority sul'ṭānan but not falā he should exceed yus'rif in fī the killing l-qatli Indeed, he innahu is kāna helped manṣūran
And do not kill the soul [i.e., person] which Allāh has forbidden, except by right.1 And whoever is killed unjustly - We have given his heir authority,2 but let him not exceed limits in [the matter of] taking life. Indeed, he has been supported [by the law].
وَلَا And (do) not walā come near taqrabū (the) wealth māla (of) the orphan l-yatīmi except illā with what bi-allatī [it] is hiya best aḥsanu until ḥattā he reaches yablugha his maturity ashuddahu And fulfil wa-awfū the covenant bil-ʿahdi Indeed inna the covenant l-ʿahda will be kāna questioned masūlan
And do not approach the property of an orphan, except in the way that is best,1 until he reaches maturity. And fulfill [every] commitment. Indeed, the commitment is ever [that about which one will be] questioned.
وَأَوْفُوا۟ And give full wa-awfū [the] measure l-kayla when idhā you measure kil'tum and weigh wazinū with the balance bil-qis'ṭāsi the straight l-mus'taqīmi That dhālika (is) good khayrun and best wa-aḥsanu (in) result tawīlan
And give full measure when you measure, and weigh with an even [i.e., honest] balance. That is the best [way] and best in result.
وَلَا And (do) not walā pursue taqfu what mā not laysa you have laka of it bihi any knowledge ʿil'mun Indeed inna the hearing l-samʿa and the sight wal-baṣara and the heart wal-fuāda all kullu those ulāika will be kāna [about it] ʿanhu questioned masūlan
And do not pursue1 that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight and the heart - about all those [one] will be questioned.
وَلَا And (do) not walā walk tamshi in fī the earth l-arḍi (with) insolence maraḥan Indeed, you innaka will never lan tear takhriqa the earth l-arḍa and will never walan reach tablugha the mountains l-jibāla (in) height ṭūlan
And do not walk upon the earth exultantly. Indeed, you will never tear the earth [apart], and you will never reach the mountains in height.1
كُلُّ All kullu that dhālika is kāna [its] evil sayyi-uhu near ʿinda your Lord rabbika hateful makrūhan
All that [i.e., the aforementioned] - its evil is ever, in the sight of your Lord, detested.
ذَٰلِكَ That dhālika (is) from what mimmā (was) revealed awḥā to you ilayka (from) your Lord rabbuka of mina the wisdom l-ḥik'mati And (do) not walā make tajʿal with maʿa Allah l-lahi god ilāhan other ākhara lest you should be thrown fatul'qā in fī Hell jahannama blameworthy malūman abandoned madḥūran
That is from what your Lord has revealed to you, [O Muḥammad], of wisdom. And, [O mankind], do not make [as equal] with Allāh another deity, lest you be thrown into Hell, blamed and banished.
أَفَأَصْفَىٰكُمْ Then has your Lord chosen (for) you afa-aṣfākum Then has your Lord chosen (for) you rabbukum sons bil-banīna and He has taken wa-ittakhadha from mina the Angels l-malāikati daughters ināthan Indeed, you innakum surely say lataqūlūna a word qawlan grave ʿaẓīman
Then, has your Lord chosen you for [having] sons and taken [i.e., adopted] from among the angels daughters? Indeed, you say a grave saying.
وَلَقَدْ And verily walaqad We have explained ṣarrafnā in fī this hādhā the Quran l-qur'āni that they may take heed liyadhakkarū but not wamā it increases them yazīduhum except illā (in) aversion nufūran
And We have certainly diversified [the contents] in this Qur’ān that they [i.e., mankind] may be reminded, but it does not increase them [i.e., the disbelievers] except in aversion.
قُل Say qul If law (there) were kāna with Him maʿahu gods ālihatun as kamā they say yaqūlūna then idhan surely they (would) have sought la-ib'taghaw to ilā (the) Owner dhī (of) the Throne l-ʿarshi a way sabīlan
Say, [O Muḥammad], "If there had been with Him [other] gods, as they say, then they [each] would have sought to the Owner of the Throne a way."1
سُبْحَـٰنَهُۥ Glorified is He sub'ḥānahu and Exalted is He wataʿālā above what ʿammā they say yaqūlūna (by) height ʿuluwwan great kabīran
Exalted is He and high above what they say by great sublimity.
تُسَبِّحُ Glorify tusabbiḥu [to] Him lahu the seven heavens l-samāwātu the seven heavens l-sabʿu and the earth wal-arḍu and whatever waman (is) in them fīhinna And (there is) not wa-in any min thing shayin except illā glorifies yusabbiḥu His Praise biḥamdihi but walākin not lā you understand tafqahūna their glorification tasbīḥahum Indeed, He innahu is kāna Ever-Forbearing ḥalīman Oft-Forgiving ghafūran
The seven heavens and the earth and whatever is in them exalt Him. And there is not a thing except that it exalts [Allāh] by His praise, but you do not understand their [way of] exalting. Indeed, He is ever Forbearing1 and Forgiving.
وَإِذَا And when wa-idhā you recite qarata the Quran l-qur'āna We place jaʿalnā between you baynaka and between wabayna those who alladhīna (do) not lā believe yu'minūna in the Hereafter bil-ākhirati a barrier ḥijāban hidden mastūran
And when you recite the Qur’ān, We put between you and those who do not believe in the Hereafter a concealed partition.1
وَجَعَلْنَا And We have placed wajaʿalnā over ʿalā their hearts qulūbihim coverings akinnatan lest an they understand it yafqahūhu and in wafī their ears ādhānihim deafness waqran And when wa-idhā you mention dhakarta your Lord rabbaka in fī the Quran l-qur'āni Alone waḥdahu they turn wallaw on ʿalā their backs adbārihim (in) aversion nufūran
And We have placed over their hearts coverings, lest they understand it, and in their ears deafness. And when you mention your Lord alone in the Qur’ān, they turn back in aversion.
نَّحْنُ We naḥnu know best aʿlamu [of] what bimā they listen yastamiʿūna to [it] bihi when idh they listen yastamiʿūna to you ilayka and when wa-idh they hum (are) in private conversation najwā when idh say yaqūlu the wrongdoers l-ẓālimūna Not in you follow tattabiʿūna but illā a man rajulan bewitched masḥūran
We are most knowing of how they listen to it when they listen to you and [of] when they are in private conversation, when the wrongdoers say, "You follow not but a man affected by magic."
ٱنظُرْ See unẓur how kayfa they put forth ḍarabū for you laka the examples l-amthāla but they have gone astray faḍallū so not falā they can yastaṭīʿūna (find) a way sabīlan
Look how they strike for you comparisons;1 but they have strayed, so they cannot [find] a way.
وَقَالُوٓا۟ And they say waqālū Is it when a-idhā we are kunnā bones ʿiẓāman and crumbled particles warufātan will we a-innā surely (be) resurrected lamabʿūthūna (as) a creation khalqan new jadīdan
And they say, "When we are bones and crumbled particles, will we [truly] be resurrected as a new creation?"
۞ قُلْ Say qul Be kūnū stones ḥijāratan or aw iron ḥadīdan
Say, "Be you stones or iron1
أَوْ Or aw a creation khalqan of what mimmā (is) great yakburu in fī your breasts ṣudūrikum Then they will say fasayaqūlūna Who man will restore us yuʿīdunā Say quli He Who alladhī created you faṭarakum (the) first awwala time marratin Then they will shake fasayun'ghiḍūna at you ilayka their heads ruūsahum and they say wayaqūlūna When (will) matā it (be) huwa Say qul Perhaps ʿasā that an (it) will be yakūna soon qarīban
Or [any] creation of that which is great1 within your breasts." And they will say, "Who will restore us?" Say, "He who brought you forth the first time." Then they will nod their heads toward you2 and say, "When is that?" Say, "Perhaps it will be soon -
يَوْمَ (On) the Day yawma He will call you yadʿūkum and you will respond fatastajībūna with His Praise biḥamdihi and you will think wataẓunnūna not in you had remained labith'tum except illā a little (while) qalīlan
On the Day He will call you and you will respond with praise of Him and think that you had not remained [in the world] except for a little."
وَقُل And say waqul to My slaves liʿibādī (to) say yaqūlū that allatī which hiya (is) best aḥsanu Indeed inna the Shaitaan l-shayṭāna sows discord yanzaghu between them baynahum Indeed inna the Shaitaan l-shayṭāna is kāna to the man lil'insāni an enemy ʿaduwwan clear mubīnan
And tell My servants to say that which is best. Indeed, Satan induces [dissension] among them. Indeed Satan is ever, to mankind, a clear enemy.
رَّبُّكُمْ Your Lord rabbukum (is) most knowing aʿlamu of you bikum If in He wills yasha He will have mercy on you yarḥamkum or aw if in He wills yasha He will punish you yuʿadhib'kum And not wamā We have sent you arsalnāka over them ʿalayhim (as) a guardian wakīlan
Your Lord is most knowing of you. If He wills, He will have mercy upon you; or if He wills, He will punish you. And We have not sent you, [O Muḥammad], over them as a manager.
وَرَبُّكَ And your Lord warabbuka (is) most knowing aʿlamu of whoever biman (is) in fī the heavens l-samāwāti and the earth wal-arḍi And verily walaqad We have preferred faḍḍalnā some baʿḍa (of) the Prophets l-nabiyīna to ʿalā others baʿḍin And We gave waātaynā Dawood dāwūda Zaboor zabūran
And your Lord is most knowing of whoever is in the heavens and the earth. And We have made some of the prophets exceed others [in various ways], and to David We gave the book [of Psalms].
قُلِ Say quli Call id'ʿū those whom alladhīna you claimed zaʿamtum besides Him min besides Him dūnihi [then] not falā they have power yamlikūna (to) remove kashfa the misfortunes l-ḍuri from you ʿankum and not walā (to) transfer (it) taḥwīlan
Say, "Invoke those you have claimed [as gods] besides Him, for they do not possess the [ability for] removal of adversity from you or [for its] transfer [to someone else]."
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ Those ulāika whom alladhīna they call yadʿūna seek yabtaghūna to ilā their Lord rabbihimu the means of access l-wasīlata which of them ayyuhum (is) nearest aqrabu and they hope wayarjūna (for) His mercy raḥmatahu and fear wayakhāfūna His punishment ʿadhābahu Indeed inna (the) punishment ʿadhāba (of) your Lord rabbika is kāna (ever) feared maḥdhūran
Those whom they invoke1 seek means of access to their Lord, [striving as to] which of them would be nearest, and they hope for His mercy and fear His punishment. Indeed, the punishment of your Lord is ever feared.
وَإِن And not wa-in (is) any min town qaryatin but illā We naḥnu (will) destroy it muh'likūhā before qabla (the) Day yawmi (of) the Resurrection l-qiyāmati or aw punish it muʿadhibūhā with a punishment ʿadhāban severe shadīdan That is kāna That is dhālika in fī the Book l-kitābi written masṭūran
And there is no city but that We will destroy it1 before the Day of Resurrection or punish it with a severe punishment. That has ever been in the Register2 inscribed.
وَمَا And not wamā stopped Us manaʿanā that an We send nur'sila the Signs bil-āyāti except illā that an denied kadhaba them bihā the former (people) l-awalūna And We gave waātaynā Thamud thamūda the she-camel l-nāqata (as) a visible sign mub'ṣiratan but they wronged faẓalamū her bihā And not wamā We send nur'silu the Signs bil-āyāti except illā (as) a warning takhwīfan
And nothing has prevented Us from sending signs [i.e., miracles] except that the former peoples denied them. And We gave Thamūd the she-camel as a visible sign, but they wronged her. And We send not the signs except as a warning.
وَإِذْ And when wa-idh We said qul'nā to you laka Indeed inna your Lord rabbaka has encompassed aḥāṭa the mankind bil-nāsi And not wamā We made jaʿalnā the vision l-ru'yā which allatī We showed you araynāka except illā (as) a trial fit'natan for mankind lilnnāsi and the tree wal-shajarata the accursed l-malʿūnata in fī the Quran l-qur'āni And We threaten them wanukhawwifuhum but not famā it increases them yazīduhum except illā (in) transgression ṭugh'yānan great kabīran
And [remember, O Muḥammad], when We told you, "Indeed, your Lord has encompassed the people."1 And We did not make the sight which We showed you2 except as a trial for the people, as was the accursed tree [mentioned] in the Qur’ān. And We threaten [i.e., warn] them, but it increases them not except in great transgression.
وَإِذْ And when wa-idh We said qul'nā to the Angels lil'malāikati Prostrate us'judū to Adam liādama So they prostrated fasajadū except illā Iblis ib'līsa He said qāla Shall I prostrate a-asjudu to (one) whom liman You created khalaqta (from) clay ṭīnan
And [mention] when We said to the angels, "Prostrate to Adam," and they prostrated, except for Iblees.1 He said, "Should I prostrate to one You created from clay?"
قَالَ He said qāla Do You see ara-aytaka this hādhā whom alladhī You have honored karramta above me ʿalayya If la-in You give me respite akhartani till ilā (the) Day yawmi (of) the Resurrection l-qiyāmati I will surely destroy la-aḥtanikanna his offspring dhurriyyatahu except illā a few qalīlan
[Iblees] said, "Do You see this one whom You have honored above me? If You delay me [i.e., my death] until the Day of Resurrection, I will surely destroy1 his descendants, except for a few."
قَالَ He said qāla Go idh'hab and whoever faman follows you tabiʿaka among them min'hum then indeed fa-inna Hell jahannama (is) your recompense jazāukum a recompense jazāan ample mawfūran
[Allāh] said, "Go, for whoever of them follows you, indeed Hell will be the recompense of [all of] you - an ample recompense.
وَٱسْتَفْزِزْ And incite wa-is'tafziz whoever mani you can is'taṭaʿta among them min'hum with your voice biṣawtika and assault wa-ajlib [on] them ʿalayhim with your cavalry bikhaylika and infantry warajilika and be a partner washārik'hum in fī the wealth l-amwāli and the children wal-awlādi and promise them waʿid'hum And not wamā promises them yaʿiduhumu the Shaitaan l-shayṭānu except illā delusion ghurūran
And incite [to senselessness] whoever you can among them with your voice and assault them with your horses and foot soldiers and become a partner in their wealth and their children and promise them." But Satan does not promise them except delusion.
إِنَّ Indeed inna My slaves ʿibādī not laysa for you laka over them ʿalayhim any authority sul'ṭānun And sufficient wakafā (is) your Lord birabbika (as) a Guardian wakīlan
Indeed, over My [believing] servants there is for you no authority. And sufficient is your Lord as Disposer of affairs.1
رَّبُّكُمُ Your Lord rabbukumu (is) the One Who alladhī drives yuz'jī for you lakumu the ship l-ful'ka in fī the sea l-baḥri that you may seek litabtaghū of min His Bounty faḍlihi Indeed, He innahu is kāna to you bikum Ever Merciful raḥīman
It is your Lord who drives the ship for you through the sea that you may seek of His bounty. Indeed, He is ever, to you, Merciful.
وَإِذَا And when wa-idhā touches you massakumu the hardship l-ḍuru in fī the sea l-baḥri lost ḍalla (are) who man you call tadʿūna except illā Him Alone iyyāhu But when falammā He delivers you najjākum to ilā the land l-bari you turn away aʿraḍtum And is wakāna man l-insānu ungrateful kafūran
And when adversity touches you at sea, lost are [all] those you invoke except for Him. But when He delivers you to the land, you turn away [from Him]. And ever is man ungrateful.
أَفَأَمِنتُمْ Do you then feel secure afa-amintum that (not) an He will cause to swallow yakhsifa you bikum side jāniba (of) the land l-bari or aw send yur'sila against you ʿalaykum a storm of stones ḥāṣiban Then thumma not lā you will find tajidū for you lakum a guardian wakīlan
Then do you feel secure that [instead] He will not cause a part of the land to swallow you or send against you a storm of stones? Then you would not find for yourselves an advocate.
أَمْ Or am do you feel secure amintum that (not) an He will send you back yuʿīdakum into it fīhi another time tāratan another time ukh'rā and send fayur'sila upon you ʿalaykum a hurricane qāṣifan of mina the wind l-rīḥi and drown you fayugh'riqakum because bimā you disbelieved kafartum Then thumma not lā you will find tajidū for you lakum against Us ʿalaynā therein bihi an avenger tabīʿan
Or do you feel secure that He will not send you back into it [i.e., the sea] another time and send upon you a hurricane of wind and drown you for what you denied?1 Then you would not find for yourselves against Us an avenger.2
۞ وَلَقَدْ And certainly walaqad We have honored karramnā (the) children of Adam banī (the) children of Adam ādama and We carried them waḥamalnāhum on fī the land l-bari and the sea wal-baḥri and We have provided them warazaqnāhum of mina the good things l-ṭayibāti and We preferred them wafaḍḍalnāhum over ʿalā many kathīrin of those whom mimman We have created khalaqnā (with) preference tafḍīlan
And We have certainly honored the children of Adam and carried them on the land and sea and provided for them of the good things and preferred them over much of what We have created, with [definite] preference.
يَوْمَ (The) Day yawma We will call nadʿū all kulla human beings unāsin with their record bi-imāmihim then whoever faman is given ūtiya his record kitābahu in his right hand biyamīnihi then those fa-ulāika will read yaqraūna their records kitābahum and not walā they will be wronged yuẓ'lamūna (even as much as) a hair on a date seed fatīlan
[Mention, O Muḥammad], the Day We will call forth every people with their record [of deeds].1 Then whoever is given his record in his right hand - those will read their records, and injustice will not be done to them, [even] as much as a thread [inside the date seed].
وَمَن And whoever waman is kāna in fī this (world) hādhihi blind aʿmā then he fahuwa in fī the Hereafter l-ākhirati (will be) blind aʿmā and more astray wa-aḍallu (from the) path sabīlan
And whoever is blind1 in this [life] will be blind in the Hereafter and more astray in way.
وَإِن And indeed wa-in they were about (to) kādū tempt you away layaftinūnaka from ʿani that which alladhī We revealed awḥaynā to you ilayka that you invent litaftariya about Us ʿalaynā other (than) it ghayrahu And then wa-idhan surely they would take you la-ittakhadhūka (as) a friend khalīlan
And indeed, they were about to tempt you away from that which We revealed to you in order to [make] you invent about Us something else; and then they would have taken you as a friend.
وَلَوْلَآ And if not walawlā [that] an We (had) strengthened you thabbatnāka certainly laqad you almost kidtta (would) have inclined tarkanu to them ilayhim (in) something shayan a little qalīlan
And if We had not strengthened you, you would have almost inclined to them a little.
إِذًۭا Then idhan We (would) have made you taste la-adhaqnāka double ḍiʿ'fa (in) the life l-ḥayati and double waḍiʿ'fa (after) the death l-mamāti Then thumma not lā you (would) have found tajidu for you laka against Us ʿalaynā any helper naṣīran
Then [if you had], We would have made you taste double [punishment in] life and double [after] death. Then you would not find for yourself against Us a helper.
وَإِن And indeed wa-in they were about kādū (to) scare you layastafizzūnaka from mina the land l-arḍi that they evict you liyukh'rijūka from it min'hā But then wa-idhan not lā they (would) have stayed yalbathūna after you khilāfaka except illā a little qalīlan
And indeed, they were about to provoke [i.e., drive] you from the land [i.e., Makkah] to evict you therefrom. And then [when they do], they will not remain [there] after you, except for a little.1
سُنَّةَ (Such is Our) Way sunnata (for) whom man [verily] qad We sent arsalnā before you qablaka of min Our Messengers rusulinā And not walā you will find tajidu (in) Our way lisunnatinā any alteration taḥwīlan
[That is Our] established way for those We had sent before you of Our messengers; and you will not find in Our way any alteration.
أَقِمِ Establish aqimi the prayer l-ṣalata at the decline lidulūki (of) the sun l-shamsi till ilā (the) darkness ghasaqi (of) the night al-layli and Quran waqur'āna at dawn l-fajri indeed inna the Quran qur'āna (at) the dawn l-fajri is kāna ever witnessed mashhūdan
Establish prayer at the decline of the sun [from its meridian] until the darkness of the night1 and [also] the Qur’ān [i.e., recitation] of dawn.2 Indeed, the recitation of dawn is ever witnessed.
وَمِنَ And from wamina the night al-layli arise from sleep for prayer fatahajjad with it bihi (as) additional nāfilatan for you laka it may be ʿasā that an will raise you yabʿathaka your Lord rabbuka (to) a station maqāman praiseworthy maḥmūdan
And from [part of] the night, pray1 with it [i.e., recitation of the Qur’ān] as additional [worship] for you; it is expected that2 your Lord will resurrect you to a praised station.3
وَقُل And say waqul My Lord rabbi Cause me to enter adkhil'nī an entrance mud'khala sound ṣid'qin and cause me to exit wa-akhrij'nī an exit mukh'raja sound ṣid'qin and make wa-ij'ʿal for me lī from min near You ladunka an authority sul'ṭānan helping naṣīran
And say, "My Lord, cause me to enter a sound entrance1 and to exit a sound exit2 and grant me from Yourself a supporting authority."
وَقُلْ And say waqul Has come jāa the truth l-ḥaqu and perished wazahaqa the falsehood l-bāṭilu Indeed inna the falsehood l-bāṭila is kāna (bound) to perish zahūqan
And say, "Truth has come, and falsehood has departed. Indeed is falsehood, [by nature], ever bound to depart."
وَنُنَزِّلُ And We reveal wanunazzilu from mina the Quran l-qur'āni that mā it huwa (is) a healing shifāon and a mercy waraḥmatun for the believers lil'mu'minīna but not walā it increases yazīdu the wrongdoers l-ẓālimīna except illā (in) loss khasāran
And We send down of the Qur’ān that which is healing and mercy for the believers, but it does not increase the wrongdoers except in loss.
وَإِذَآ And when wa-idhā We bestow favor anʿamnā on ʿalā man l-insāni he turns away aʿraḍa and becomes remote wanaā on his side bijānibihi And when wa-idhā touches him massahu the evil l-sharu he is kāna (in) despair yaūsan
And when We bestow favor upon man [i.e., the disbeliever], he turns away and distances himself; and when evil touches him, he is ever despairing.
قُلْ Say qul Each kullun works yaʿmalu on ʿalā his manner shākilatihi but your Lord farabbukum (is) most knowing aʿlamu of who biman [he] huwa (is) best guided ahdā (in) way sabīlan
Say, "Each works according to his manner, but your Lord is most knowing of who is best guided in way."
وَيَسْـَٔلُونَكَ And they ask you wayasalūnaka concerning ʿani the soul l-rūḥi Say quli The soul l-rūḥu (is) of min (the) affair amri (of) my Lord rabbī And not wamā you have been given ūtītum of mina the knowledge l-ʿil'mi except illā a little qalīlan
And they ask you, [O Muḥammad], about the soul. Say, "The soul is of the affair [i.e., concern] of my Lord. And you [i.e., mankind] have not been given of knowledge except a little."
وَلَئِن And if wala-in We willed shi'nā We (would) have surely taken away lanadhhabanna that which bi-alladhī We have revealed awḥaynā to you ilayka Then thumma not lā you would find tajidu for you laka concerning it bihi against Us ʿalaynā any advocate wakīlan
And if We willed, We could surely do away with that which We revealed to you. Then you would not find for yourself concerning it an advocate against Us.
إِلَّا Except illā a mercy raḥmatan from min your Lord rabbika Indeed inna His Bounty faḍlahu is kāna upon you ʿalayka great kabīran
Except [We have left it with you] as a mercy from your Lord. Indeed, His favor upon you has ever been great.
قُل Say qul If la-ini gathered ij'tamaʿati the mankind l-insu and the jinn wal-jinu to ʿalā [that] an bring yatū the like bimith'li (of) this hādhā Quran l-qur'āni not lā they (could) bring yatūna the like of it bimith'lihi even if walaw were kāna some of them baʿḍuhum to some others libaʿḍin assistants ẓahīran
Say, "If mankind and the jinn gathered in order to produce the like of this Qur’ān, they could not produce the like of it, even if they were to each other assistants."
وَلَقَدْ And verily walaqad We have explained ṣarrafnā to mankind lilnnāsi in fī this hādhā Quran l-qur'āni from min every kulli example mathalin but refused fa-abā most aktharu (of) the mankind l-nāsi except illā disbelief kufūran
And We have certainly diversified for the people in this Qur’ān from every [kind of] example, but most of the people refused except disbelief.
وَقَالُوا۟ And they say waqālū Never lan we will believe nu'mina in you laka until ḥattā you cause to gush forth tafjura for us lanā from mina the earth l-arḍi a spring yanbūʿan
And they say, "We will not believe you until you break open for us from the ground a spring
أَوْ Or aw you have takūna for you laka a garden jannatun of min date-palms nakhīlin and grapes waʿinabin and cause to gush forth fatufajjira the rivers l-anhāra within them khilālahā abundantly tafjīran
Or [until] you have a garden of palm trees and grapes and make rivers gush forth within them in force [and abundance]
أَوْ Or aw you cause to fall tus'qiṭa the sky l-samāa as kamā you have claimed zaʿamta upon us ʿalaynā (in) pieces kisafan or aw you bring tatiya Allah bil-lahi and the Angels wal-malāikati before (us) qabīlan
Or you make the heaven fall upon us in fragments as you have claimed or you bring Allāh and the angels before [us]
أَوْ Or aw is yakūna for you laka a house baytun of min ornament zukh'rufin or aw you ascend tarqā into fī the sky l-samāi And never walan we will believe nu'mina in your ascension liruqiyyika until ḥattā you bring down tunazzila to us ʿalaynā a book kitāban we could read it naqra-uhu Say qul Glorified (is) sub'ḥāna my Lord rabbī What hal am I kuntu but illā a human basharan a Messenger rasūlan
Or you have a house of ornament [i.e., gold] or you ascend into the sky. And [even then], we will not believe in your ascension until you bring down to us a book we may read." Say, "Exalted is my Lord! Was I ever but a human messenger?"
وَمَا And what wamā prevented manaʿa the people l-nāsa that an they believe yu'minū when idh came to them jāahumu the guidance l-hudā except illā that an they said qālū Has Allah sent abaʿatha Has Allah sent l-lahu a human basharan Messenger rasūlan
And what prevented the people from believing when guidance came to them except that they said, "Has Allāh sent a human messenger?"
قُل Say qul If law (there) were kāna in fī the earth l-arḍi Angels malāikatun walking yamshūna securely muṭ'ma-innīna surely We (would) have sent down lanazzalnā to them ʿalayhim from mina the heaven l-samāi an Angel malakan (as) a Messenger rasūlan
Say, "If there were upon the earth angels walking securely,1 We would have sent down to them from the heaven an angel [as a] messenger."
قُلْ Say qul Sufficient is kafā Allah bil-lahi (as) a witness shahīdan between me baynī and between you wabaynakum Indeed, He innahu is kāna of His slaves biʿibādihi All-Aware khabīran All-Seer baṣīran
Say, "Sufficient is Allāh as Witness between me and you. Indeed He is ever, concerning His servants, Aware and Seeing."
وَمَن And whoever waman Allah guides yahdi Allah guides l-lahu then he (is) fahuwa the guided one l-muh'tadi and whoever waman He lets go astray yuḍ'lil then never falan you will find tajida for them lahum protectors awliyāa besides Him min besides Him dūnihi And We will gather them wanaḥshuruhum (on) the Day yawma (of) the Resurrection l-qiyāmati on ʿalā their faces wujūhihim blind ʿum'yan and dumb wabuk'man and deaf waṣumman Their abode mawāhum (is) Hell jahannamu every time kullamā it subsides khabat We (will) increase (for) them zid'nāhum the blazing fire saʿīran
And whoever Allāh guides - he is the [rightly] guided; and whoever He sends astray1 - you will never find for them protectors besides Him, and We will gather them on the Day of Resurrection [fallen] on their faces - blind, dumb and deaf. Their refuge is Hell; every time it subsides, We increase [for] them blazing fire.
ذَٰلِكَ That dhālika (is) their recompense jazāuhum because they bi-annahum disbelieved kafarū in Our Verses biāyātinā and said waqālū When a-idhā we are kunnā bones ʿiẓāman and crumbled particles warufātan will we a-innā surely (be) resurrected lamabʿūthūna (as) a creation khalqan new jadīdan
That is their recompense because they disbelieved in Our verses and said, "When we are bones and crumbled particles, will we [truly] be resurrected [in] a new creation?"
۞ أَوَلَمْ Do not awalam they see yaraw that anna Allah l-laha the One Who alladhī created khalaqa the heavens l-samāwāti and the earth wal-arḍa (is) Able qādirun [on] ʿalā to an create yakhluqa the like of them mith'lahum And He has made wajaʿala for them lahum a term ajalan no lā doubt rayba in it fīhi But refused fa-abā the wrongdoers l-ẓālimūna except illā disbelief kufūran
Do they not see that Allāh, who created the heavens and earth, is [the one] Able to create the likes of them? And He has appointed for them a term, about which there is no doubt. But the wrongdoers refuse except disbelief.
قُل Say qul If law you antum possess tamlikūna the treasures khazāina (of) the Mercy raḥmati (of) my Lord rabbī then idhan surely you would withhold la-amsaktum (out of) fear khashyata (of) spending l-infāqi And is wakāna man l-insānu stingy qatūran
Say [to them], "If you possessed the depositories of the mercy of my Lord, then you would withhold out of fear of spending." And ever has man been stingy.
وَلَقَدْ And certainly walaqad We had given ātaynā Musa mūsā nine tis'ʿa Signs āyātin clear bayyinātin so ask fasal (the) Children of Israel banī (the) Children of Israel is'rāīla when idh he came to them jāahum then said faqāla to him lahu Firaun fir'ʿawnu Indeed, I innī [I] think you la-aẓunnuka O Musa yāmūsā (you are) bewitched masḥūran
And We had certainly given Moses nine evident signs, so ask the Children of Israel [about] when he came to them and Pharaoh said to him, "Indeed I think, O Moses, that you are affected by magic."
قَالَ He said qāla Verily laqad you have known ʿalim'ta none mā has sent down anzala these hāulāi except illā (the) Lord rabbu (of) the heavens l-samāwāti and the earth wal-arḍi (as) evidence baṣāira and indeed, I wa-innī [I] surely think you la-aẓunnuka O Firaun yāfir'ʿawnu (you are) destroyed mathbūran
[Moses] said, "You have already known that none has sent down these [signs] except the Lord of the heavens and the earth as evidence, and indeed I think,1 O Pharaoh, that you are destroyed."
فَأَرَادَ So he intended fa-arāda to an drive them out yastafizzahum from mina the land l-arḍi but We drowned him fa-aghraqnāhu and who waman (were) with him maʿahu all jamīʿan
So he intended to drive them from the land, but We drowned him and those with him all together.
وَقُلْنَا And We said waqul'nā after him min after him baʿdihi to the Children of Israel libanī to the Children of Israel is'rāīla Dwell us'kunū (in) the land l-arḍa then when fa-idhā comes jāa (the) promise waʿdu (of) the Hereafter l-ākhirati We will bring ji'nā you bikum (as) a mixed crowd lafīfan
And We said after him [i.e., Pharaoh] to the Children of Israel, "Dwell in the land, and when there comes the promise [i.e., appointment] of the Hereafter, We will bring you forth in [one] gathering."
وَبِٱلْحَقِّ And with the truth wabil-ḥaqi We sent it down anzalnāhu and with the truth wabil-ḥaqi it descended nazala And not wamā We sent you arsalnāka except illā (as) a bearer of glad tidings mubashiran and a warner wanadhīran
And with the truth We have sent it [i.e., the Qur’ān] down, and with the truth it has descended. And We have not sent you, [O Muḥammad], except as a bringer of good tidings and a warner.
وَقُرْءَانًۭا And the Quran waqur'ānan We have divided faraqnāhu that you might recite it litaqra-ahu to ʿalā the people l-nāsi at ʿalā intervals muk'thin And We have revealed it wanazzalnāhu (in) stages tanzīlan
And [it is] a Qur’ān which We have separated [by intervals] that you might recite it to the people over a prolonged period. And We have sent it down progressively.
قُلْ Say qul Believe āminū in it bihi or aw (do) not lā believe tu'minū Indeed inna those who alladhīna were given ūtū the knowledge l-ʿil'ma before it min before it qablihi when idhā it is recited yut'lā to them ʿalayhim they fall yakhirrūna on their faces lil'adhqāni (in) prostration sujjadan
Say, "Believe in it or do not believe." Indeed, those who were given knowledge before it1 - when it is recited to them, they fall upon their faces in prostration,
وَيَقُولُونَ And they say wayaqūlūna Glory be to sub'ḥāna our Lord rabbinā Indeed in is kāna (the) promise waʿdu (of) our Lord rabbinā surely fulfilled lamafʿūlan
And they say, "Exalted is our Lord! Indeed, the promise of our Lord has been fulfilled."
وَيَخِرُّونَ And they fall wayakhirrūna on their faces lil'adhqāni weeping yabkūna and it increases them wayazīduhum (in) humility khushūʿan
And they fall upon their faces weeping, and it [i.e., the Qur’ān] increases them in humble submission.
قُلِ Say quli Invoke id'ʿū Allah l-laha or awi invoke id'ʿū the Most Gracious l-raḥmāna By whatever (name) ayyan By whatever (name) mā you invoke tadʿū to Him (belongs) falahu the Most Beautiful Names l-asmāu the Most Beautiful Names l-ḥus'nā And (do) not walā be loud tajhar in your prayers biṣalātika and not walā be silent tukhāfit therein bihā but seek wa-ib'taghi between bayna that dhālika a way sabīlan
Say, "Call upon Allāh or call upon the Most Merciful [ar-Raḥmān]. Whichever [name] you call - to Him belong the best names." And do not recite [too] loudly in your prayer or [too] quietly but seek between that an [intermediate] way.
وَقُلِ And say waquli All Praise l-ḥamdu (is) for Allah lillahi the One Who alladhī has not taken lam has not taken yattakhidh a son waladan and not walam is yakun for Him lahu a partner sharīkun in fī the dominion l-mul'ki and not walam is yakun for Him lahu any protector waliyyun out of mina weakness l-dhuli And magnify Him wakabbir'hu (with all) magnificence takbīran
And say, "Praise to Allāh, who has not taken a son and has had no partner in [His] dominion and has no [need of a] protector out of weakness; and glorify Him with [great] glorification."
