The Night Journey

الإسراء

سُبْحَـٰنَ

Exalted

sub'ḥāna

ٱلَّذِىٓ

(is) the One Who

alladhī

أَسْرَىٰ

took

asrā

بِعَبْدِهِۦ

His servant

biʿabdihi

لَيْلًۭا

(by) night

laylan

مِّنَ

from

mina

ٱلْمَسْجِدِ

Al-Masjid Al-Haraam

l-masjidi

ٱلْحَرَامِ

Al-Masjid Al-Haraam

l-ḥarāmi

إِلَى

to

ilā

ٱلْمَسْجِدِ

Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa

l-masjidi

ٱلْأَقْصَا

Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa

l-aqṣā

ٱلَّذِى

which

alladhī

بَـٰرَكْنَا

We blessed

bāraknā

حَوْلَهُۥ

its surroundings

ḥawlahu

لِنُرِيَهُۥ

that We may show him

linuriyahu

مِنْ

of

min

ءَايَـٰتِنَآ ۚ

Our Signs

āyātinā

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed He

innahu

هُوَ

He

huwa

ٱلسَّمِيعُ

(is) the All-Hearer

l-samīʿu

ٱلْبَصِيرُ

the All-Seer

l-baṣīru

١

Exalted1 is He who took His Servant [i.e., Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ)] by night from al-Masjid al-Ḥarām to al-Masjid al-Aqṣā,2 whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him of Our signs. Indeed, He is the Hearing,3 the Seeing.4

— Saheeh International

وَءَاتَيْنَا

And We gave

waātaynā

مُوسَى

Musa

mūsā

ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ

the Book

l-kitāba

وَجَعَلْنَـٰهُ

and made it

wajaʿalnāhu

هُدًۭى

a guidance

hudan

لِّبَنِىٓ

for the Children

libanī

إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ

(of) Israel

is'rāīla

أَلَّا

That not

allā

تَتَّخِذُوا۟

you take

tattakhidhū

مِن

other than Me

min

دُونِى

other than Me

dūnī

وَكِيلًۭا

(as) a Disposer of affairs

wakīlan

٢

And We gave Moses the Scripture and made it a guidance for the Children of Israel that you not take other than Me as Disposer of affairs,1

— Saheeh International

ذُرِّيَّةَ

Offsprings

dhurriyyata

مَنْ

(of one) who

man

حَمَلْنَا

We carried

ḥamalnā

مَعَ

with

maʿa

نُوحٍ ۚ

Nuh

nūḥin

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed, he

innahu

كَانَ

was

kāna

عَبْدًۭا

a servant

ʿabdan

شَكُورًۭا

grateful

shakūran

٣

O descendants of those We carried [in the ship] with Noah. Indeed, he was a grateful servant.

— Saheeh International

وَقَضَيْنَآ

And We decreed

waqaḍaynā

إِلَىٰ

for

ilā

بَنِىٓ

(the) Children

banī

إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ

(of) Israel

is'rāīla

فِى

in

ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ

the Book

l-kitābi

لَتُفْسِدُنَّ

Surely you will cause corruption

latuf'sidunna

فِى

in

ٱلْأَرْضِ

the earth

l-arḍi

مَرَّتَيْنِ

twice

marratayni

وَلَتَعْلُنَّ

and surely you will reach

walataʿlunna

عُلُوًّۭا

haughtiness

ʿuluwwan

كَبِيرًۭا

great

kabīran

٤

And We conveyed1 to the Children of Israel in the Scripture that, "You will surely cause corruption on the earth twice, and you will surely reach [a degree of] great haughtiness."

— Saheeh International

فَإِذَا

So when

fa-idhā

جَآءَ

came

jāa

وَعْدُ

(the) promise

waʿdu

أُولَىٰهُمَا

(for) the first of the two

ūlāhumā

بَعَثْنَا

We raised

baʿathnā

عَلَيْكُمْ

against you

ʿalaykum

عِبَادًۭا

servants

ʿibādan

لَّنَآ

of Ours

lanā

أُو۟لِى

those of great military might

ulī

بَأْسٍۢ

those of great military might

basin

شَدِيدٍۢ

those of great military might

shadīdin

فَجَاسُوا۟

and they entered

fajāsū

خِلَـٰلَ

the inner most part

khilāla

ٱلدِّيَارِ ۚ

(of) the homes

l-diyāri

وَكَانَ

and (it) was

wakāna

وَعْدًۭا

a promise

waʿdan

مَّفْعُولًۭا

fulfilled

mafʿūlan

٥

So when the [time of] promise came for the first of them,1 We sent against you servants of Ours - those of great military might, and they probed [even] into the homes,2 and it was a promise fulfilled.

— Saheeh International

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

رَدَدْنَا

We gave back

radadnā

لَكُمُ

to you

lakumu

ٱلْكَرَّةَ

the return victory

l-karata

عَلَيْهِمْ

over them

ʿalayhim

وَأَمْدَدْنَـٰكُم

And We reinforced you

wa-amdadnākum

بِأَمْوَٰلٍۢ

with the wealth

bi-amwālin

وَبَنِينَ

and sons

wabanīna

وَجَعَلْنَـٰكُمْ

and made you

wajaʿalnākum

أَكْثَرَ

more

akthara

نَفِيرًا

numerous

nafīran

٦

Then We gave back to you a return victory over them. And We reinforced you with wealth and sons and made you more numerous in manpower.

— Saheeh International

إِنْ

If

in

أَحْسَنتُمْ

you do good

aḥsantum

أَحْسَنتُمْ

you do good

aḥsantum

لِأَنفُسِكُمْ ۖ

for yourselves

li-anfusikum

وَإِنْ

and if

wa-in

أَسَأْتُمْ

you do evil

asatum

فَلَهَا ۚ

then it is for it

falahā

فَإِذَا

So when

fa-idhā

جَآءَ

came

jāa

وَعْدُ

promise

waʿdu

ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ

the last

l-ākhirati

لِيَسُـۥٓـُٔوا۟

to sadden

liyasūū

وُجُوهَكُمْ

your faces

wujūhakum

وَلِيَدْخُلُوا۟

and to enter

waliyadkhulū

ٱلْمَسْجِدَ

the Masjid

l-masjida

كَمَا

just as

kamā

دَخَلُوهُ

they (had) entered it

dakhalūhu

أَوَّلَ

first

awwala

مَرَّةٍۢ

time

marratin

وَلِيُتَبِّرُوا۟

and to destroy

waliyutabbirū

مَا

what

عَلَوْا۟

they had conquered

ʿalaw

تَتْبِيرًا

(with) destruction

tatbīran

٧

[And said], "If you do good, you do good for yourselves; and if you do evil, [you do it] to them [i.e., yourselves]." Then when the final [i.e., second] promise came, [We sent your enemies] to sadden your faces and to enter the masjid [i.e., the temple in Jerusalem], as they entered it the first time, and to destroy what they had taken over with [total] destruction.

— Saheeh International

عَسَىٰ

(It) may be

ʿasā

رَبُّكُمْ

that your Lord

rabbukum

أَن

that your Lord

an

يَرْحَمَكُمْ ۚ

(may) have mercy upon you

yarḥamakum

وَإِنْ

But if

wa-in

عُدتُّمْ

you return

ʿudttum

عُدْنَا ۘ

We will return

ʿud'nā

وَجَعَلْنَا

And We have made

wajaʿalnā

جَهَنَّمَ

Hell

jahannama

لِلْكَـٰفِرِينَ

for the disbelievers

lil'kāfirīna

حَصِيرًا

a prison-bed

ḥaṣīran

٨

[Then Allāh said], "It is expected, [if you repent], that your Lord will have mercy upon you. But if you return [to sin], We will return [to punishment]. And We have made Hell, for the disbelievers, a prison-bed."

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

هَـٰذَا

this

hādhā

ٱلْقُرْءَانَ

the Quran

l-qur'āna

يَهْدِى

guides

yahdī

لِلَّتِى

to that

lillatī

هِىَ

which

hiya

أَقْوَمُ

(is) most straight

aqwamu

وَيُبَشِّرُ

and gives glad tidings

wayubashiru

ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

to the believers

l-mu'minīna

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

يَعْمَلُونَ

do

yaʿmalūna

ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ

the righteous deeds

l-ṣāliḥāti

أَنَّ

that

anna

لَهُمْ

for them

lahum

أَجْرًۭا

(is) a reward

ajran

كَبِيرًۭا

great

kabīran

٩

Indeed, this Qur’ān guides to that which is most suitable and gives good tidings to the believers who do righteous deeds that they will have a great reward

— Saheeh International

وَأَنَّ

And that

wa-anna

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

لَا

(do) not

يُؤْمِنُونَ

believe

yu'minūna

بِٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ

in the Hereafter

bil-ākhirati

أَعْتَدْنَا

We have prepared

aʿtadnā

لَهُمْ

for them

lahum

عَذَابًا

a punishment

ʿadhāban

أَلِيمًۭا

painful

alīman

١٠

And that those who do not believe in the Hereafter - We have prepared for them a painful punishment.

— Saheeh International

وَيَدْعُ

And prays

wayadʿu

ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ

the man

l-insānu

بِٱلشَّرِّ

for evil

bil-shari

دُعَآءَهُۥ

(as) he prays

duʿāahu

بِٱلْخَيْرِ ۖ

for the good

bil-khayri

وَكَانَ

And is

wakāna

ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ

the man

l-insānu

عَجُولًۭا

ever hasty

ʿajūlan

١١

And man supplicates for evil [when angry] as he supplicates for good, and man is ever hasty.1

— Saheeh International

وَجَعَلْنَا

And We have made

wajaʿalnā

ٱلَّيْلَ

the night

al-layla

وَٱلنَّهَارَ

and the day

wal-nahāra

ءَايَتَيْنِ ۖ

(as) two signs

āyatayni

فَمَحَوْنَآ

Then We erased

famaḥawnā

ءَايَةَ

(the) sign

āyata

ٱلَّيْلِ

(of) the night

al-layli

وَجَعَلْنَآ

and We made

wajaʿalnā

ءَايَةَ

(the) sign

āyata

ٱلنَّهَارِ

(of) the day

l-nahāri

مُبْصِرَةًۭ

visible

mub'ṣiratan

لِّتَبْتَغُوا۟

that you may seek

litabtaghū

فَضْلًۭا

bounty

faḍlan

مِّن

from

min

رَّبِّكُمْ

your Lord

rabbikum

وَلِتَعْلَمُوا۟

and that you may know

walitaʿlamū

عَدَدَ

(the) number

ʿadada

ٱلسِّنِينَ

(of) the years

l-sinīna

وَٱلْحِسَابَ ۚ

and the account

wal-ḥisāba

وَكُلَّ

And every

wakulla

شَىْءٍۢ

thing

shayin

فَصَّلْنَـٰهُ

We have explained it

faṣṣalnāhu

تَفْصِيلًۭا

(in) detail

tafṣīlan

١٢

And We have made the night and day two signs, and We erased the sign of the night and made the sign of the day visible1 that you may seek bounty from your Lord and may know the number of years and the account [of time]. And everything We have set out in detail.

— Saheeh International

وَكُلَّ

And (for) every

wakulla

إِنسَـٰنٍ

man

insānin

أَلْزَمْنَـٰهُ

We have fastened to him

alzamnāhu

طَـٰٓئِرَهُۥ

his fate

ṭāirahu

فِى

in

عُنُقِهِۦ ۖ

his neck

ʿunuqihi

وَنُخْرِجُ

and We will bring forth

wanukh'riju

لَهُۥ

for him

lahu

يَوْمَ

(on the) Day

yawma

ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ

(of) the Resurrection

l-qiyāmati

كِتَـٰبًۭا

a record

kitāban

يَلْقَىٰهُ

which he will find

yalqāhu

مَنشُورًا

wide open

manshūran

١٣

And [for] every person We have imposed his fate upon his neck,1 and We will produce for him on the Day of Resurrection a record which he will encounter spread open.

— Saheeh International

ٱقْرَأْ

Read

iq'ra

كِتَـٰبَكَ

your record

kitābaka

كَفَىٰ

Sufficient

kafā

بِنَفْسِكَ

(is) yourself

binafsika

ٱلْيَوْمَ

today

l-yawma

عَلَيْكَ

against you

ʿalayka

حَسِيبًۭا

(as) accountant

ḥasīban

١٤

[It will be said], "Read your record. Sufficient is yourself against you this Day as accountant."

— Saheeh International

مَّنِ

Whoever

mani

ٱهْتَدَىٰ

(is) guided

ih'tadā

فَإِنَّمَا

then only

fa-innamā

يَهْتَدِى

he is guided

yahtadī

لِنَفْسِهِۦ ۖ

for his soul

linafsihi

وَمَن

And whoever

waman

ضَلَّ

goes astray

ḍalla

فَإِنَّمَا

then only

fa-innamā

يَضِلُّ

he goes astray

yaḍillu

عَلَيْهَا ۚ

against it

ʿalayhā

وَلَا

And not

walā

تَزِرُ

will bear

taziru

وَازِرَةٌۭ

a bearer of burden

wāziratun

وِزْرَ

burden

wiz'ra

أُخْرَىٰ ۗ

(of) another

ukh'rā

وَمَا

And not

wamā

كُنَّا

We

kunnā

مُعَذِّبِينَ

are to punish

muʿadhibīna

حَتَّىٰ

until

ḥattā

نَبْعَثَ

We have sent

nabʿatha

رَسُولًۭا

a Messenger

rasūlan

١٥

Whoever is guided is only guided for [the benefit of] his soul. And whoever errs only errs against it. And no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another. And never would We punish until We sent a messenger.

— Saheeh International

وَإِذَآ

And when

wa-idhā

أَرَدْنَآ

We intend

aradnā

أَن

that

an

نُّهْلِكَ

We destroy

nuh'lika

قَرْيَةً

a town

qaryatan

أَمَرْنَا

We order

amarnā

مُتْرَفِيهَا

its wealthy people

mut'rafīhā

فَفَسَقُوا۟

but they defiantly disobey

fafasaqū

فِيهَا

therein

fīhā

فَحَقَّ

so (is) proved true

faḥaqqa

عَلَيْهَا

against it

ʿalayhā

ٱلْقَوْلُ

the word

l-qawlu

فَدَمَّرْنَـٰهَا

and We destroy it

fadammarnāhā

تَدْمِيرًۭا

(with) destruction

tadmīran

١٦

And when We intend to destroy a city, We command its affluent1 but they defiantly disobey therein; so the word [i.e., deserved decree] comes into effect upon it, and We destroy it with [complete] destruction.

— Saheeh International

وَكَمْ

And how many

wakam

أَهْلَكْنَا

We destroyed

ahlaknā

مِنَ

from

mina

ٱلْقُرُونِ

the generations

l-qurūni

مِنۢ

after

min

بَعْدِ

after

baʿdi

نُوحٍۢ ۗ

Nuh

nūḥin

وَكَفَىٰ

And sufficient

wakafā

بِرَبِّكَ

(is) your Lord

birabbika

بِذُنُوبِ

concerning the sins

bidhunūbi

عِبَادِهِۦ

(of) His servants

ʿibādihi

خَبِيرًۢا

All-Aware

khabīran

بَصِيرًۭا

All-Seer

baṣīran

١٧

And how many have We destroyed from the generations after Noah. And sufficient is your Lord, concerning the sins of His servants, as Aware and Seeing.

— Saheeh International

مَّن

Whoever

man

كَانَ

should

kāna

يُرِيدُ

desire

yurīdu

ٱلْعَاجِلَةَ

the immediate

l-ʿājilata

عَجَّلْنَا

We hasten

ʿajjalnā

لَهُۥ

for him

lahu

فِيهَا

in it

fīhā

مَا

what

نَشَآءُ

We will

nashāu

لِمَن

to whom

liman

نُّرِيدُ

We intend

nurīdu

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

جَعَلْنَا

We have made

jaʿalnā

لَهُۥ

for him

lahu

جَهَنَّمَ

Hell

jahannama

يَصْلَىٰهَا

he will burn

yaṣlāhā

مَذْمُومًۭا

disgraced

madhmūman

مَّدْحُورًۭا

rejected

madḥūran

١٨

Whoever should desire the immediate1 - We hasten for him from it what We will to whom We intend. Then We have made for him Hell, which he will [enter to] burn, censured and banished.

— Saheeh International

وَمَنْ

And whoever

waman

أَرَادَ

desires

arāda

ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةَ

the Hereafter

l-ākhirata

وَسَعَىٰ

and exerts

wasaʿā

لَهَا

for it

lahā

سَعْيَهَا

the effort

saʿyahā

وَهُوَ

while he

wahuwa

مُؤْمِنٌۭ

(is) a believer

mu'minun

فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

then those

fa-ulāika

كَانَ

[are]

kāna

سَعْيُهُم

their effort

saʿyuhum

مَّشْكُورًۭا

(is) appreciated

mashkūran

١٩

But whoever desires the Hereafter and exerts the effort due to it while he is a believer - it is those whose effort is ever appreciated [by Allāh].

— Saheeh International

كُلًّۭا

(To) each

kullan

نُّمِدُّ

We extend

numiddu

هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ

(to) these

hāulāi

وَهَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ

and (to) these

wahāulāi

مِنْ

from

min

عَطَآءِ

(the) gift

ʿaṭāi

رَبِّكَ ۚ

(of) your Lord

rabbika

وَمَا

And not

wamā

كَانَ

is

kāna

عَطَآءُ

(the) gift

ʿaṭāu

رَبِّكَ

(of) your Lord

rabbika

مَحْظُورًا

restricted

maḥẓūran

٢٠

To each [category] We extend - to these and to those - from the gift of your Lord. And never has the gift of your Lord been restricted.

— Saheeh International

ٱنظُرْ

See

unẓur

كَيْفَ

how

kayfa

فَضَّلْنَا

We preferred

faḍḍalnā

بَعْضَهُمْ

some of them

baʿḍahum

عَلَىٰ

over

ʿalā

بَعْضٍۢ ۚ

others

baʿḍin

وَلَلْـَٔاخِرَةُ

And surely the Hereafter

walalākhiratu

أَكْبَرُ

(is) greater

akbaru

دَرَجَـٰتٍۢ

(in) degrees

darajātin

وَأَكْبَرُ

and greater

wa-akbaru

تَفْضِيلًۭا

(in) excellence

tafḍīlan

٢١

Look how We have favored [in provision] some of them over others. But the Hereafter is greater in degrees [of difference] and greater in distinction.

— Saheeh International

لَّا

(Do) not

تَجْعَلْ

make

tajʿal

مَعَ

with

maʿa

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

إِلَـٰهًا

god

ilāhan

ءَاخَرَ

another

ākhara

فَتَقْعُدَ

lest you will sit

fataqʿuda

مَذْمُومًۭا

disgraced

madhmūman

مَّخْذُولًۭا

forsaken

makhdhūlan

٢٢

Do not make [as equal] with Allāh another deity and [thereby] become censured and forsaken.

— Saheeh International

۞ وَقَضَىٰ

And has decreed

waqaḍā

رَبُّكَ

your Lord

rabbuka

أَلَّا

that (do) not

allā

تَعْبُدُوٓا۟

worship

taʿbudū

إِلَّآ

except

illā

إِيَّاهُ

Him Alone

iyyāhu

وَبِٱلْوَٰلِدَيْنِ

and to the parents

wabil-wālidayni

إِحْسَـٰنًا ۚ

(be) good

iḥ'sānan

إِمَّا

Whether

immā

يَبْلُغَنَّ

reach

yablughanna

عِندَكَ

with you

ʿindaka

ٱلْكِبَرَ

the old age

l-kibara

أَحَدُهُمَآ

one of them

aḥaduhumā

أَوْ

or

aw

كِلَاهُمَا

both of them

kilāhumā

فَلَا

then (do) not

falā

تَقُل

say

taqul

لَّهُمَآ

to both of them

lahumā

أُفٍّۢ

a word of disrespect

uffin

وَلَا

and (do) not

walā

تَنْهَرْهُمَا

repel them

tanharhumā

وَقُل

but speak

waqul

لَّهُمَا

to them

lahumā

قَوْلًۭا

a word

qawlan

كَرِيمًۭا

noble

karīman

٢٣

And your Lord has decreed that you worship not except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so much as], "uff,"1 and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word.

— Saheeh International

وَٱخْفِضْ

And lower

wa-ikh'fiḍ

لَهُمَا

to them

lahumā

جَنَاحَ

(the) wing

janāḥa

ٱلذُّلِّ

(of) humility

l-dhuli

مِنَ

(out) of

mina

ٱلرَّحْمَةِ

[the] mercy

l-raḥmati

وَقُل

and say

waqul

رَّبِّ

My Lord

rabbi

ٱرْحَمْهُمَا

Have mercy on both of them

ir'ḥamhumā

كَمَا

as

kamā

رَبَّيَانِى

they brought me up

rabbayānī

صَغِيرًۭا

(when I was) small

ṣaghīran

٢٤

And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, "My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was] small."

— Saheeh International

رَّبُّكُمْ

Your Lord

rabbukum

أَعْلَمُ

(is) most knowing

aʿlamu

بِمَا

of what

bimā

فِى

(is) in

نُفُوسِكُمْ ۚ

yourselves

nufūsikum

إِن

If

in

تَكُونُوا۟

you are

takūnū

صَـٰلِحِينَ

righteous

ṣāliḥīna

فَإِنَّهُۥ

then indeed, He

fa-innahu

كَانَ

is

kāna

لِلْأَوَّٰبِينَ

to those who often turn (to Him)

lil'awwābīna

غَفُورًۭا

Most Forgiving

ghafūran

٢٥

Your Lord is most knowing of what is within yourselves. If you should be righteous [in intention] - then indeed He is ever, to the often returning [to Him], Forgiving.1

— Saheeh International

وَءَاتِ

And give

waāti

ذَا

the relatives

dhā

ٱلْقُرْبَىٰ

the relatives

l-qur'bā

حَقَّهُۥ

his right

ḥaqqahu

وَٱلْمِسْكِينَ

and the needy

wal-mis'kīna

وَٱبْنَ

and the wayfarer

wa-ib'na

ٱلسَّبِيلِ

and the wayfarer

l-sabīli

وَلَا

and (do) not

walā

تُبَذِّرْ

spend

tubadhir

تَبْذِيرًا

wastefully

tabdhīran

٢٦

And give the relative his right, and [also] the poor and the traveler, and do not spend wastefully.1

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱلْمُبَذِّرِينَ

the spendthrifts

l-mubadhirīna

كَانُوٓا۟

are

kānū

إِخْوَٰنَ

brothers

ikh'wāna

ٱلشَّيَـٰطِينِ ۖ

(of) the devils

l-shayāṭīni

وَكَانَ

And is

wakāna

ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُ

the Shaitaan

l-shayṭānu

لِرَبِّهِۦ

to his Lord

lirabbihi

كَفُورًۭا

ungrateful

kafūran

٢٧

Indeed, the wasteful are brothers of the devils, and ever has Satan been to his Lord ungrateful.

— Saheeh International

وَإِمَّا

And if

wa-immā

تُعْرِضَنَّ

you turn away

tuʿ'riḍanna

عَنْهُمُ

from them

ʿanhumu

ٱبْتِغَآءَ

seeking

ib'tighāa

رَحْمَةٍۢ

mercy

raḥmatin

مِّن

from

min

رَّبِّكَ

your Lord

rabbika

تَرْجُوهَا

which you expect

tarjūhā

فَقُل

then say

faqul

لَّهُمْ

to them

lahum

قَوْلًۭا

a word

qawlan

مَّيْسُورًۭا

gentle

maysūran

٢٨

And if you [must] turn away from them [i.e., the needy] awaiting mercy from your Lord which you expect,1 then speak to them a gentle word.

— Saheeh International

وَلَا

And (do) not

walā

تَجْعَلْ

make

tajʿal

يَدَكَ

your hand

yadaka

مَغْلُولَةً

chained

maghlūlatan

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

عُنُقِكَ

your neck

ʿunuqika

وَلَا

and not

walā

تَبْسُطْهَا

extend it

tabsuṭ'hā

كُلَّ

(to its) utmost

kulla

ٱلْبَسْطِ

reach

l-basṭi

فَتَقْعُدَ

so that you sit

fataqʿuda

مَلُومًۭا

blameworthy

malūman

مَّحْسُورًا

insolvent

maḥsūran

٢٩

And do not make your hand [as] chained to your neck1 or extend it completely2 and [thereby] become blamed and insolvent.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

رَبَّكَ

your Lord

rabbaka

يَبْسُطُ

extends

yabsuṭu

ٱلرِّزْقَ

the provision

l-riz'qa

لِمَن

for whom

liman

يَشَآءُ

He wills

yashāu

وَيَقْدِرُ ۚ

and straitens

wayaqdiru

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed, He

innahu

كَانَ

is

kāna

بِعِبَادِهِۦ

of His slaves

biʿibādihi

خَبِيرًۢا

All-Aware

khabīran

بَصِيرًۭا

All-Seer

baṣīran

٣٠

Indeed, your Lord extends provision for whom He wills and restricts [it]. Indeed He is ever, concerning His servants, Aware and Seeing.

— Saheeh International

وَلَا

And (do) not

walā

تَقْتُلُوٓا۟

kill

taqtulū

أَوْلَـٰدَكُمْ

your children

awlādakum

خَشْيَةَ

(for) fear

khashyata

إِمْلَـٰقٍۢ ۖ

(of) poverty

im'lāqin

نَّحْنُ

We

naḥnu

نَرْزُقُهُمْ

(We) provide for them

narzuquhum

وَإِيَّاكُمْ ۚ

and for you

wa-iyyākum

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

قَتْلَهُمْ

their killing

qatlahum

كَانَ

is

kāna

خِطْـًۭٔا

a sin

khiṭ'an

كَبِيرًۭا

great

kabīran

٣١

And do not kill your children for fear of poverty. We provide for them and for you. Indeed, their killing is ever a great sin.

— Saheeh International

وَلَا

And (do) not

walā

تَقْرَبُوا۟

go near

taqrabū

ٱلزِّنَىٰٓ ۖ

adultery

l-zinā

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed, it

innahu

كَانَ

is

kāna

فَـٰحِشَةًۭ

an immorality

fāḥishatan

وَسَآءَ

and (an) evil

wasāa

سَبِيلًۭا

way

sabīlan

٣٢

And do not approach unlawful sexual intercourse.1 Indeed, it is ever an immorality and is evil as a way.

— Saheeh International

وَلَا

And (do) not

walā

تَقْتُلُوا۟

kill

taqtulū

ٱلنَّفْسَ

the soul

l-nafsa

ٱلَّتِى

which

allatī

حَرَّمَ

Allah has forbidden

ḥarrama

ٱللَّهُ

Allah has forbidden

l-lahu

إِلَّا

except

illā

بِٱلْحَقِّ ۗ

by right

bil-ḥaqi

وَمَن

And whoever

waman

قُتِلَ

(is) killed

qutila

مَظْلُومًۭا

wrongfully

maẓlūman

فَقَدْ

verily

faqad

جَعَلْنَا

We have made

jaʿalnā

لِوَلِيِّهِۦ

for his heir

liwaliyyihi

سُلْطَـٰنًۭا

an authority

sul'ṭānan

فَلَا

but not

falā

يُسْرِف

he should exceed

yus'rif

فِّى

in

ٱلْقَتْلِ ۖ

the killing

l-qatli

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed, he

innahu

كَانَ

is

kāna

مَنصُورًۭا

helped

manṣūran

٣٣

And do not kill the soul [i.e., person] which Allāh has forbidden, except by right.1 And whoever is killed unjustly - We have given his heir authority,2 but let him not exceed limits in [the matter of] taking life. Indeed, he has been supported [by the law].

— Saheeh International

وَلَا

And (do) not

walā

تَقْرَبُوا۟

come near

taqrabū

مَالَ

(the) wealth

māla

ٱلْيَتِيمِ

(of) the orphan

l-yatīmi

إِلَّا

except

illā

بِٱلَّتِى

with what

bi-allatī

هِىَ

[it] is

hiya

أَحْسَنُ

best

aḥsanu

حَتَّىٰ

until

ḥattā

يَبْلُغَ

he reaches

yablugha

أَشُدَّهُۥ ۚ

his maturity

ashuddahu

وَأَوْفُوا۟

And fulfil

wa-awfū

بِٱلْعَهْدِ ۖ

the covenant

bil-ʿahdi

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱلْعَهْدَ

the covenant

l-ʿahda

كَانَ

will be

kāna

مَسْـُٔولًۭا

questioned

masūlan

٣٤

And do not approach the property of an orphan, except in the way that is best,1 until he reaches maturity. And fulfill [every] commitment. Indeed, the commitment is ever [that about which one will be] questioned.

— Saheeh International

وَأَوْفُوا۟

And give full

wa-awfū

ٱلْكَيْلَ

[the] measure

l-kayla

إِذَا

when

idhā

كِلْتُمْ

you measure

kil'tum

وَزِنُوا۟

and weigh

wazinū

بِٱلْقِسْطَاسِ

with the balance

bil-qis'ṭāsi

ٱلْمُسْتَقِيمِ ۚ

the straight

l-mus'taqīmi

ذَٰلِكَ

That

dhālika

خَيْرٌۭ

(is) good

khayrun

وَأَحْسَنُ

and best

wa-aḥsanu

تَأْوِيلًۭا

(in) result

tawīlan

٣٥

And give full measure when you measure, and weigh with an even [i.e., honest] balance. That is the best [way] and best in result.

— Saheeh International

وَلَا

And (do) not

walā

تَقْفُ

pursue

taqfu

مَا

what

لَيْسَ

not

laysa

لَكَ

you have

laka

بِهِۦ

of it

bihi

عِلْمٌ ۚ

any knowledge

ʿil'mun

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱلسَّمْعَ

the hearing

l-samʿa

وَٱلْبَصَرَ

and the sight

wal-baṣara

وَٱلْفُؤَادَ

and the heart

wal-fuāda

كُلُّ

all

kullu

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

those

ulāika

كَانَ

will be

kāna

عَنْهُ

[about it]

ʿanhu

مَسْـُٔولًۭا

questioned

masūlan

٣٦

And do not pursue1 that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight and the heart - about all those [one] will be questioned.

— Saheeh International

وَلَا

And (do) not

walā

تَمْشِ

walk

tamshi

فِى

in

ٱلْأَرْضِ

the earth

l-arḍi

مَرَحًا ۖ

(with) insolence

maraḥan

إِنَّكَ

Indeed, you

innaka

لَن

will never

lan

تَخْرِقَ

tear

takhriqa

ٱلْأَرْضَ

the earth

l-arḍa

وَلَن

and will never

walan

تَبْلُغَ

reach

tablugha

ٱلْجِبَالَ

the mountains

l-jibāla

طُولًۭا

(in) height

ṭūlan

٣٧

And do not walk upon the earth exultantly. Indeed, you will never tear the earth [apart], and you will never reach the mountains in height.1

— Saheeh International

كُلُّ

All

kullu

ذَٰلِكَ

that

dhālika

كَانَ

is

kāna

سَيِّئُهُۥ

[its] evil

sayyi-uhu

عِندَ

near

ʿinda

رَبِّكَ

your Lord

rabbika

مَكْرُوهًۭا

hateful

makrūhan

٣٨

All that [i.e., the aforementioned] - its evil is ever, in the sight of your Lord, detested.

— Saheeh International

ذَٰلِكَ

That

dhālika

مِمَّآ

(is) from what

mimmā

أَوْحَىٰٓ

(was) revealed

awḥā

إِلَيْكَ

to you

ilayka

رَبُّكَ

(from) your Lord

rabbuka

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلْحِكْمَةِ ۗ

the wisdom

l-ḥik'mati

وَلَا

And (do) not

walā

تَجْعَلْ

make

tajʿal

مَعَ

with

maʿa

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

إِلَـٰهًا

god

ilāhan

ءَاخَرَ

other

ākhara

فَتُلْقَىٰ

lest you should be thrown

fatul'qā

فِى

in

جَهَنَّمَ

Hell

jahannama

مَلُومًۭا

blameworthy

malūman

مَّدْحُورًا

abandoned

madḥūran

٣٩

That is from what your Lord has revealed to you, [O Muḥammad], of wisdom. And, [O mankind], do not make [as equal] with Allāh another deity, lest you be thrown into Hell, blamed and banished.

— Saheeh International

أَفَأَصْفَىٰكُمْ

Then has your Lord chosen (for) you

afa-aṣfākum

رَبُّكُم

Then has your Lord chosen (for) you

rabbukum

بِٱلْبَنِينَ

sons

bil-banīna

وَٱتَّخَذَ

and He has taken

wa-ittakhadha

مِنَ

from

mina

ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِ

the Angels

l-malāikati

إِنَـٰثًا ۚ

daughters

ināthan

إِنَّكُمْ

Indeed, you

innakum

لَتَقُولُونَ

surely say

lataqūlūna

قَوْلًا

a word

qawlan

عَظِيمًۭا

grave

ʿaẓīman

٤٠

Then, has your Lord chosen you for [having] sons and taken [i.e., adopted] from among the angels daughters? Indeed, you say a grave saying.

— Saheeh International

وَلَقَدْ

And verily

walaqad

صَرَّفْنَا

We have explained

ṣarrafnā

فِى

in

هَـٰذَا

this

hādhā

ٱلْقُرْءَانِ

the Quran

l-qur'āni

لِيَذَّكَّرُوا۟

that they may take heed

liyadhakkarū

وَمَا

but not

wamā

يَزِيدُهُمْ

it increases them

yazīduhum

إِلَّا

except

illā

نُفُورًۭا

(in) aversion

nufūran

٤١

And We have certainly diversified [the contents] in this Qur’ān that they [i.e., mankind] may be reminded, but it does not increase them [i.e., the disbelievers] except in aversion.

— Saheeh International

قُل

Say

qul

لَّوْ

If

law

كَانَ

(there) were

kāna

مَعَهُۥٓ

with Him

maʿahu

ءَالِهَةٌۭ

gods

ālihatun

كَمَا

as

kamā

يَقُولُونَ

they say

yaqūlūna

إِذًۭا

then

idhan

لَّٱبْتَغَوْا۟

surely they (would) have sought

la-ib'taghaw

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

ذِى

(the) Owner

dhī

ٱلْعَرْشِ

(of) the Throne

l-ʿarshi

سَبِيلًۭا

a way

sabīlan

٤٢

Say, [O Muḥammad], "If there had been with Him [other] gods, as they say, then they [each] would have sought to the Owner of the Throne a way."1

— Saheeh International

سُبْحَـٰنَهُۥ

Glorified is He

sub'ḥānahu

وَتَعَـٰلَىٰ

and Exalted is He

wataʿālā

عَمَّا

above what

ʿammā

يَقُولُونَ

they say

yaqūlūna

عُلُوًّۭا

(by) height

ʿuluwwan

كَبِيرًۭا

great

kabīran

٤٣

Exalted is He and high above what they say by great sublimity.

— Saheeh International

تُسَبِّحُ

Glorify

tusabbiḥu

لَهُ

[to] Him

lahu

ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتُ

the seven heavens

l-samāwātu

ٱلسَّبْعُ

the seven heavens

l-sabʿu

وَٱلْأَرْضُ

and the earth

wal-arḍu

وَمَن

and whatever

waman

فِيهِنَّ ۚ

(is) in them

fīhinna

وَإِن

And (there is) not

wa-in

مِّن

any

min

شَىْءٍ

thing

shayin

إِلَّا

except

illā

يُسَبِّحُ

glorifies

yusabbiḥu

بِحَمْدِهِۦ

His Praise

biḥamdihi

وَلَـٰكِن

but

walākin

لَّا

not

تَفْقَهُونَ

you understand

tafqahūna

تَسْبِيحَهُمْ ۗ

their glorification

tasbīḥahum

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed, He

innahu

كَانَ

is

kāna

حَلِيمًا

Ever-Forbearing

ḥalīman

غَفُورًۭا

Oft-Forgiving

ghafūran

٤٤

The seven heavens and the earth and whatever is in them exalt Him. And there is not a thing except that it exalts [Allāh] by His praise, but you do not understand their [way of] exalting. Indeed, He is ever Forbearing1 and Forgiving.

— Saheeh International

وَإِذَا

And when

wa-idhā

قَرَأْتَ

you recite

qarata

ٱلْقُرْءَانَ

the Quran

l-qur'āna

جَعَلْنَا

We place

jaʿalnā

بَيْنَكَ

between you

baynaka

وَبَيْنَ

and between

wabayna

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

لَا

(do) not

يُؤْمِنُونَ

believe

yu'minūna

بِٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ

in the Hereafter

bil-ākhirati

حِجَابًۭا

a barrier

ḥijāban

مَّسْتُورًۭا

hidden

mastūran

٤٥

And when you recite the Qur’ān, We put between you and those who do not believe in the Hereafter a concealed partition.1

— Saheeh International

وَجَعَلْنَا

And We have placed

wajaʿalnā

عَلَىٰ

over

ʿalā

قُلُوبِهِمْ

their hearts

qulūbihim

أَكِنَّةً

coverings

akinnatan

أَن

lest

an

يَفْقَهُوهُ

they understand it

yafqahūhu

وَفِىٓ

and in

wafī

ءَاذَانِهِمْ

their ears

ādhānihim

وَقْرًۭا ۚ

deafness

waqran

وَإِذَا

And when

wa-idhā

ذَكَرْتَ

you mention

dhakarta

رَبَّكَ

your Lord

rabbaka

فِى

in

ٱلْقُرْءَانِ

the Quran

l-qur'āni

وَحْدَهُۥ

Alone

waḥdahu

وَلَّوْا۟

they turn

wallaw

عَلَىٰٓ

on

ʿalā

أَدْبَـٰرِهِمْ

their backs

adbārihim

نُفُورًۭا

(in) aversion

nufūran

٤٦

And We have placed over their hearts coverings, lest they understand it, and in their ears deafness. And when you mention your Lord alone in the Qur’ān, they turn back in aversion.

— Saheeh International

نَّحْنُ

We

naḥnu

أَعْلَمُ

know best

aʿlamu

بِمَا

[of] what

bimā

يَسْتَمِعُونَ

they listen

yastamiʿūna

بِهِۦٓ

to [it]

bihi

إِذْ

when

idh

يَسْتَمِعُونَ

they listen

yastamiʿūna

إِلَيْكَ

to you

ilayka

وَإِذْ

and when

wa-idh

هُمْ

they

hum

نَجْوَىٰٓ

(are) in private conversation

najwā

إِذْ

when

idh

يَقُولُ

say

yaqūlu

ٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَ

the wrongdoers

l-ẓālimūna

إِن

Not

in

تَتَّبِعُونَ

you follow

tattabiʿūna

إِلَّا

but

illā

رَجُلًۭا

a man

rajulan

مَّسْحُورًا

bewitched

masḥūran

٤٧

We are most knowing of how they listen to it when they listen to you and [of] when they are in private conversation, when the wrongdoers say, "You follow not but a man affected by magic."

— Saheeh International

ٱنظُرْ

See

unẓur

كَيْفَ

how

kayfa

ضَرَبُوا۟

they put forth

ḍarabū

لَكَ

for you

laka

ٱلْأَمْثَالَ

the examples

l-amthāla

فَضَلُّوا۟

but they have gone astray

faḍallū

فَلَا

so not

falā

يَسْتَطِيعُونَ

they can

yastaṭīʿūna

سَبِيلًۭا

(find) a way

sabīlan

٤٨

Look how they strike for you comparisons;1 but they have strayed, so they cannot [find] a way.

— Saheeh International

وَقَالُوٓا۟

And they say

waqālū

أَءِذَا

Is it when

a-idhā

كُنَّا

we are

kunnā

عِظَـٰمًۭا

bones

ʿiẓāman

وَرُفَـٰتًا

and crumbled particles

warufātan

أَءِنَّا

will we

a-innā

لَمَبْعُوثُونَ

surely (be) resurrected

lamabʿūthūna

خَلْقًۭا

(as) a creation

khalqan

جَدِيدًۭا

new

jadīdan

٤٩

And they say, "When we are bones and crumbled particles, will we [truly] be resurrected as a new creation?"

— Saheeh International

۞ قُلْ

Say

qul

كُونُوا۟

Be

kūnū

حِجَارَةً

stones

ḥijāratan

أَوْ

or

aw

حَدِيدًا

iron

ḥadīdan

٥٠

Say, "Be you stones or iron1

— Saheeh International

أَوْ

Or

aw

خَلْقًۭا

a creation

khalqan

مِّمَّا

of what

mimmā

يَكْبُرُ

(is) great

yakburu

فِى

in

صُدُورِكُمْ ۚ

your breasts

ṣudūrikum

فَسَيَقُولُونَ

Then they will say

fasayaqūlūna

مَن

Who

man

يُعِيدُنَا ۖ

will restore us

yuʿīdunā

قُلِ

Say

quli

ٱلَّذِى

He Who

alladhī

فَطَرَكُمْ

created you

faṭarakum

أَوَّلَ

(the) first

awwala

مَرَّةٍۢ ۚ

time

marratin

فَسَيُنْغِضُونَ

Then they will shake

fasayun'ghiḍūna

إِلَيْكَ

at you

ilayka

رُءُوسَهُمْ

their heads

ruūsahum

وَيَقُولُونَ

and they say

wayaqūlūna

مَتَىٰ

When (will)

matā

هُوَ ۖ

it (be)

huwa

قُلْ

Say

qul

عَسَىٰٓ

Perhaps

ʿasā

أَن

that

an

يَكُونَ

(it) will be

yakūna

قَرِيبًۭا

soon

qarīban

٥١

Or [any] creation of that which is great1 within your breasts." And they will say, "Who will restore us?" Say, "He who brought you forth the first time." Then they will nod their heads toward you2 and say, "When is that?" Say, "Perhaps it will be soon -

— Saheeh International

يَوْمَ

(On) the Day

yawma

يَدْعُوكُمْ

He will call you

yadʿūkum

فَتَسْتَجِيبُونَ

and you will respond

fatastajībūna

بِحَمْدِهِۦ

with His Praise

biḥamdihi

وَتَظُنُّونَ

and you will think

wataẓunnūna

إِن

not

in

لَّبِثْتُمْ

you had remained

labith'tum

إِلَّا

except

illā

قَلِيلًۭا

a little (while)

qalīlan

٥٢

On the Day He will call you and you will respond with praise of Him and think that you had not remained [in the world] except for a little."

— Saheeh International

وَقُل

And say

waqul

لِّعِبَادِى

to My slaves

liʿibādī

يَقُولُوا۟

(to) say

yaqūlū

ٱلَّتِى

that

allatī

هِىَ

which

hiya

أَحْسَنُ ۚ

(is) best

aḥsanu

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنَ

l-shayṭāna

يَنزَغُ

sows discord

yanzaghu

بَيْنَهُمْ ۚ

between them

baynahum

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنَ

the Shaitaan

l-shayṭāna

كَانَ

is

kāna

لِلْإِنسَـٰنِ

to the man

lil'insāni

عَدُوًّۭا

an enemy

ʿaduwwan

مُّبِينًۭا

clear

mubīnan

٥٣

And tell My servants to say that which is best. Indeed, Satan induces [dissension] among them. Indeed Satan is ever, to mankind, a clear enemy.

— Saheeh International

رَّبُّكُمْ

Your Lord

rabbukum

أَعْلَمُ

(is) most knowing

aʿlamu

بِكُمْ ۖ

of you

bikum

إِن

If

in

يَشَأْ

He wills

yasha

يَرْحَمْكُمْ

He will have mercy on you

yarḥamkum

أَوْ

or

aw

إِن

if

in

يَشَأْ

He wills

yasha

يُعَذِّبْكُمْ ۚ

He will punish you

yuʿadhib'kum

وَمَآ

And not

wamā

أَرْسَلْنَـٰكَ

We have sent you

arsalnāka

عَلَيْهِمْ

over them

ʿalayhim

وَكِيلًۭا

(as) a guardian

wakīlan

٥٤

Your Lord is most knowing of you. If He wills, He will have mercy upon you; or if He wills, He will punish you. And We have not sent you, [O Muḥammad], over them as a manager.

— Saheeh International

وَرَبُّكَ

And your Lord

warabbuka

أَعْلَمُ

(is) most knowing

aʿlamu

بِمَن

of whoever

biman

فِى

(is) in

ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ

the heavens

l-samāwāti

وَٱلْأَرْضِ ۗ

and the earth

wal-arḍi

وَلَقَدْ

And verily

walaqad

فَضَّلْنَا

We have preferred

faḍḍalnā

بَعْضَ

some

baʿḍa

ٱلنَّبِيِّـۧنَ

(of) the Prophets

l-nabiyīna

عَلَىٰ

to

ʿalā

بَعْضٍۢ ۖ

others

baʿḍin

وَءَاتَيْنَا

And We gave

waātaynā

دَاوُۥدَ

Dawood

dāwūda

زَبُورًۭا

Zaboor

zabūran

٥٥

And your Lord is most knowing of whoever is in the heavens and the earth. And We have made some of the prophets exceed others [in various ways], and to David We gave the book [of Psalms].

— Saheeh International

قُلِ

Say

quli

ٱدْعُوا۟

Call

id'ʿū

ٱلَّذِينَ

those whom

alladhīna

زَعَمْتُم

you claimed

zaʿamtum

مِّن

besides Him

min

دُونِهِۦ

besides Him

dūnihi

فَلَا

[then] not

falā

يَمْلِكُونَ

they have power

yamlikūna

كَشْفَ

(to) remove

kashfa

ٱلضُّرِّ

the misfortunes

l-ḍuri

عَنكُمْ

from you

ʿankum

وَلَا

and not

walā

تَحْوِيلًا

(to) transfer (it)

taḥwīlan

٥٦

Say, "Invoke those you have claimed [as gods] besides Him, for they do not possess the [ability for] removal of adversity from you or [for its] transfer [to someone else]."

— Saheeh International

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

Those

ulāika

ٱلَّذِينَ

whom

alladhīna

يَدْعُونَ

they call

yadʿūna

يَبْتَغُونَ

seek

yabtaghūna

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

رَبِّهِمُ

their Lord

rabbihimu

ٱلْوَسِيلَةَ

the means of access

l-wasīlata

أَيُّهُمْ

which of them

ayyuhum

أَقْرَبُ

(is) nearest

aqrabu

وَيَرْجُونَ

and they hope

wayarjūna

رَحْمَتَهُۥ

(for) His mercy

raḥmatahu

وَيَخَافُونَ

and fear

wayakhāfūna

عَذَابَهُۥٓ ۚ

His punishment

ʿadhābahu

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

عَذَابَ

(the) punishment

ʿadhāba

رَبِّكَ

(of) your Lord

rabbika

كَانَ

is

kāna

مَحْذُورًۭا

(ever) feared

maḥdhūran

٥٧

Those whom they invoke1 seek means of access to their Lord, [striving as to] which of them would be nearest, and they hope for His mercy and fear His punishment. Indeed, the punishment of your Lord is ever feared.

— Saheeh International

وَإِن

And not

wa-in

مِّن

(is) any

min

قَرْيَةٍ

town

qaryatin

إِلَّا

but

illā

نَحْنُ

We

naḥnu

مُهْلِكُوهَا

(will) destroy it

muh'likūhā

قَبْلَ

before

qabla

يَوْمِ

(the) Day

yawmi

ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ

(of) the Resurrection

l-qiyāmati

أَوْ

or

aw

مُعَذِّبُوهَا

punish it

muʿadhibūhā

عَذَابًۭا

with a punishment

ʿadhāban

شَدِيدًۭا ۚ

severe

shadīdan

كَانَ

That is

kāna

ذَٰلِكَ

That is

dhālika

فِى

in

ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ

the Book

l-kitābi

مَسْطُورًۭا

written

masṭūran

٥٨

And there is no city but that We will destroy it1 before the Day of Resurrection or punish it with a severe punishment. That has ever been in the Register2 inscribed.

— Saheeh International

وَمَا

And not

wamā

مَنَعَنَآ

stopped Us

manaʿanā

أَن

that

an

نُّرْسِلَ

We send

nur'sila

بِٱلْـَٔايَـٰتِ

the Signs

bil-āyāti

إِلَّآ

except

illā

أَن

that

an

كَذَّبَ

denied

kadhaba

بِهَا

them

bihā

ٱلْأَوَّلُونَ ۚ

the former (people)

l-awalūna

وَءَاتَيْنَا

And We gave

waātaynā

ثَمُودَ

Thamud

thamūda

ٱلنَّاقَةَ

the she-camel

l-nāqata

مُبْصِرَةًۭ

(as) a visible sign

mub'ṣiratan

فَظَلَمُوا۟

but they wronged

faẓalamū

بِهَا ۚ

her

bihā

وَمَا

And not

wamā

نُرْسِلُ

We send

nur'silu

بِٱلْـَٔايَـٰتِ

the Signs

bil-āyāti

إِلَّا

except

illā

تَخْوِيفًۭا

(as) a warning

takhwīfan

٥٩

And nothing has prevented Us from sending signs [i.e., miracles] except that the former peoples denied them. And We gave Thamūd the she-camel as a visible sign, but they wronged her. And We send not the signs except as a warning.

— Saheeh International

وَإِذْ

And when

wa-idh

قُلْنَا

We said

qul'nā

لَكَ

to you

laka

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

رَبَّكَ

your Lord

rabbaka

أَحَاطَ

has encompassed

aḥāṭa

بِٱلنَّاسِ ۚ

the mankind

bil-nāsi

وَمَا

And not

wamā

جَعَلْنَا

We made

jaʿalnā

ٱلرُّءْيَا

the vision

l-ru'yā

ٱلَّتِىٓ

which

allatī

أَرَيْنَـٰكَ

We showed you

araynāka

إِلَّا

except

illā

فِتْنَةًۭ

(as) a trial

fit'natan

لِّلنَّاسِ

for mankind

lilnnāsi

وَٱلشَّجَرَةَ

and the tree

wal-shajarata

ٱلْمَلْعُونَةَ

the accursed

l-malʿūnata

فِى

in

ٱلْقُرْءَانِ ۚ

the Quran

l-qur'āni

وَنُخَوِّفُهُمْ

And We threaten them

wanukhawwifuhum

فَمَا

but not

famā

يَزِيدُهُمْ

it increases them

yazīduhum

إِلَّا

except

illā

طُغْيَـٰنًۭا

(in) transgression

ṭugh'yānan

كَبِيرًۭا

great

kabīran

٦٠

And [remember, O Muḥammad], when We told you, "Indeed, your Lord has encompassed the people."1 And We did not make the sight which We showed you2 except as a trial for the people, as was the accursed tree [mentioned] in the Qur’ān. And We threaten [i.e., warn] them, but it increases them not except in great transgression.

— Saheeh International

وَإِذْ

And when

wa-idh

قُلْنَا

We said

qul'nā

لِلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِ

to the Angels

lil'malāikati

ٱسْجُدُوا۟

Prostrate

us'judū

لِـَٔادَمَ

to Adam

liādama

فَسَجَدُوٓا۟

So they prostrated

fasajadū

إِلَّآ

except

illā

إِبْلِيسَ

Iblis

ib'līsa

قَالَ

He said

qāla

ءَأَسْجُدُ

Shall I prostrate

a-asjudu

لِمَنْ

to (one) whom

liman

خَلَقْتَ

You created

khalaqta

طِينًۭا

(from) clay

ṭīnan

٦١

And [mention] when We said to the angels, "Prostrate to Adam," and they prostrated, except for Iblees.1 He said, "Should I prostrate to one You created from clay?"

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

أَرَءَيْتَكَ

Do You see

ara-aytaka

هَـٰذَا

this

hādhā

ٱلَّذِى

whom

alladhī

كَرَّمْتَ

You have honored

karramta

عَلَىَّ

above me

ʿalayya

لَئِنْ

If

la-in

أَخَّرْتَنِ

You give me respite

akhartani

إِلَىٰ

till

ilā

يَوْمِ

(the) Day

yawmi

ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ

(of) the Resurrection

l-qiyāmati

لَأَحْتَنِكَنَّ

I will surely destroy

la-aḥtanikanna

ذُرِّيَّتَهُۥٓ

his offspring

dhurriyyatahu

إِلَّا

except

illā

قَلِيلًۭا

a few

qalīlan

٦٢

[Iblees] said, "Do You see this one whom You have honored above me? If You delay me [i.e., my death] until the Day of Resurrection, I will surely destroy1 his descendants, except for a few."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

ٱذْهَبْ

Go

idh'hab

فَمَن

and whoever

faman

تَبِعَكَ

follows you

tabiʿaka

مِنْهُمْ

among them

min'hum

فَإِنَّ

then indeed

fa-inna

جَهَنَّمَ

Hell

jahannama

جَزَآؤُكُمْ

(is) your recompense

jazāukum

جَزَآءًۭ

a recompense

jazāan

مَّوْفُورًۭا

ample

mawfūran

٦٣

[Allāh] said, "Go, for whoever of them follows you, indeed Hell will be the recompense of [all of] you - an ample recompense.

— Saheeh International

وَٱسْتَفْزِزْ

And incite

wa-is'tafziz

مَنِ

whoever

mani

ٱسْتَطَعْتَ

you can

is'taṭaʿta

مِنْهُم

among them

min'hum

بِصَوْتِكَ

with your voice

biṣawtika

وَأَجْلِبْ

and assault

wa-ajlib

عَلَيْهِم

[on] them

ʿalayhim

بِخَيْلِكَ

with your cavalry

bikhaylika

وَرَجِلِكَ

and infantry

warajilika

وَشَارِكْهُمْ

and be a partner

washārik'hum

فِى

in

ٱلْأَمْوَٰلِ

the wealth

l-amwāli

وَٱلْأَوْلَـٰدِ

and the children

wal-awlādi

وَعِدْهُمْ ۚ

and promise them

waʿid'hum

وَمَا

And not

wamā

يَعِدُهُمُ

promises them

yaʿiduhumu

ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُ

the Shaitaan

l-shayṭānu

إِلَّا

except

illā

غُرُورًا

delusion

ghurūran

٦٤

And incite [to senselessness] whoever you can among them with your voice and assault them with your horses and foot soldiers and become a partner in their wealth and their children and promise them." But Satan does not promise them except delusion.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

عِبَادِى

My slaves

ʿibādī

لَيْسَ

not

laysa

لَكَ

for you

laka

عَلَيْهِمْ

over them

ʿalayhim

سُلْطَـٰنٌۭ ۚ

any authority

sul'ṭānun

وَكَفَىٰ

And sufficient

wakafā

بِرَبِّكَ

(is) your Lord

birabbika

وَكِيلًۭا

(as) a Guardian

wakīlan

٦٥

Indeed, over My [believing] servants there is for you no authority. And sufficient is your Lord as Disposer of affairs.1

— Saheeh International

رَّبُّكُمُ

Your Lord

rabbukumu

ٱلَّذِى

(is) the One Who

alladhī

يُزْجِى

drives

yuz'jī

لَكُمُ

for you

lakumu

ٱلْفُلْكَ

the ship

l-ful'ka

فِى

in

ٱلْبَحْرِ

the sea

l-baḥri

لِتَبْتَغُوا۟

that you may seek

litabtaghū

مِن

of

min

فَضْلِهِۦٓ ۚ

His Bounty

faḍlihi

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed, He

innahu

كَانَ

is

kāna

بِكُمْ

to you

bikum

رَحِيمًۭا

Ever Merciful

raḥīman

٦٦

It is your Lord who drives the ship for you through the sea that you may seek of His bounty. Indeed, He is ever, to you, Merciful.

— Saheeh International

وَإِذَا

And when

wa-idhā

مَسَّكُمُ

touches you

massakumu

ٱلضُّرُّ

the hardship

l-ḍuru

فِى

in

ٱلْبَحْرِ

the sea

l-baḥri

ضَلَّ

lost

ḍalla

مَن

(are) who

man

تَدْعُونَ

you call

tadʿūna

إِلَّآ

except

illā

إِيَّاهُ ۖ

Him Alone

iyyāhu

فَلَمَّا

But when

falammā

نَجَّىٰكُمْ

He delivers you

najjākum

إِلَى

to

ilā

ٱلْبَرِّ

the land

l-bari

أَعْرَضْتُمْ ۚ

you turn away

aʿraḍtum

وَكَانَ

And is

wakāna

ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ

man

l-insānu

كَفُورًا

ungrateful

kafūran

٦٧

And when adversity touches you at sea, lost are [all] those you invoke except for Him. But when He delivers you to the land, you turn away [from Him]. And ever is man ungrateful.

— Saheeh International

أَفَأَمِنتُمْ

Do you then feel secure

afa-amintum

أَن

that (not)

an

يَخْسِفَ

He will cause to swallow

yakhsifa

بِكُمْ

you

bikum

جَانِبَ

side

jāniba

ٱلْبَرِّ

(of) the land

l-bari

أَوْ

or

aw

يُرْسِلَ

send

yur'sila

عَلَيْكُمْ

against you

ʿalaykum

حَاصِبًۭا

a storm of stones

ḥāṣiban

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

لَا

not

تَجِدُوا۟

you will find

tajidū

لَكُمْ

for you

lakum

وَكِيلًا

a guardian

wakīlan

٦٨

Then do you feel secure that [instead] He will not cause a part of the land to swallow you or send against you a storm of stones? Then you would not find for yourselves an advocate.

— Saheeh International

أَمْ

Or

am

أَمِنتُمْ

do you feel secure

amintum

أَن

that (not)

an

يُعِيدَكُمْ

He will send you back

yuʿīdakum

فِيهِ

into it

fīhi

تَارَةً

another time

tāratan

أُخْرَىٰ

another time

ukh'rā

فَيُرْسِلَ

and send

fayur'sila

عَلَيْكُمْ

upon you

ʿalaykum

قَاصِفًۭا

a hurricane

qāṣifan

مِّنَ

of

mina

ٱلرِّيحِ

the wind

l-rīḥi

فَيُغْرِقَكُم

and drown you

fayugh'riqakum

بِمَا

because

bimā

كَفَرْتُمْ ۙ

you disbelieved

kafartum

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

لَا

not

تَجِدُوا۟

you will find

tajidū

لَكُمْ

for you

lakum

عَلَيْنَا

against Us

ʿalaynā

بِهِۦ

therein

bihi

تَبِيعًۭا

an avenger

tabīʿan

٦٩

Or do you feel secure that He will not send you back into it [i.e., the sea] another time and send upon you a hurricane of wind and drown you for what you denied?1 Then you would not find for yourselves against Us an avenger.2

— Saheeh International

۞ وَلَقَدْ

And certainly

walaqad

كَرَّمْنَا

We have honored

karramnā

بَنِىٓ

(the) children of Adam

banī

ءَادَمَ

(the) children of Adam

ādama

وَحَمَلْنَـٰهُمْ

and We carried them

waḥamalnāhum

فِى

on

ٱلْبَرِّ

the land

l-bari

وَٱلْبَحْرِ

and the sea

wal-baḥri

وَرَزَقْنَـٰهُم

and We have provided them

warazaqnāhum

مِّنَ

of

mina

ٱلطَّيِّبَـٰتِ

the good things

l-ṭayibāti

وَفَضَّلْنَـٰهُمْ

and We preferred them

wafaḍḍalnāhum

عَلَىٰ

over

ʿalā

كَثِيرٍۢ

many

kathīrin

مِّمَّنْ

of those whom

mimman

خَلَقْنَا

We have created

khalaqnā

تَفْضِيلًۭا

(with) preference

tafḍīlan

٧٠

And We have certainly honored the children of Adam and carried them on the land and sea and provided for them of the good things and preferred them over much of what We have created, with [definite] preference.

— Saheeh International

يَوْمَ

(The) Day

yawma

نَدْعُوا۟

We will call

nadʿū

كُلَّ

all

kulla

أُنَاسٍۭ

human beings

unāsin

بِإِمَـٰمِهِمْ ۖ

with their record

bi-imāmihim

فَمَنْ

then whoever

faman

أُوتِىَ

is given

ūtiya

كِتَـٰبَهُۥ

his record

kitābahu

بِيَمِينِهِۦ

in his right hand

biyamīnihi

فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

then those

fa-ulāika

يَقْرَءُونَ

will read

yaqraūna

كِتَـٰبَهُمْ

their records

kitābahum

وَلَا

and not

walā

يُظْلَمُونَ

they will be wronged

yuẓ'lamūna

فَتِيلًۭا

(even as much as) a hair on a date seed

fatīlan

٧١

[Mention, O Muḥammad], the Day We will call forth every people with their record [of deeds].1 Then whoever is given his record in his right hand - those will read their records, and injustice will not be done to them, [even] as much as a thread [inside the date seed].

— Saheeh International

وَمَن

And whoever

waman

كَانَ

is

kāna

فِى

in

هَـٰذِهِۦٓ

this (world)

hādhihi

أَعْمَىٰ

blind

aʿmā

فَهُوَ

then he

fahuwa

فِى

in

ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ

the Hereafter

l-ākhirati

أَعْمَىٰ

(will be) blind

aʿmā

وَأَضَلُّ

and more astray

wa-aḍallu

سَبِيلًۭا

(from the) path

sabīlan

٧٢

And whoever is blind1 in this [life] will be blind in the Hereafter and more astray in way.

— Saheeh International

وَإِن

And indeed

wa-in

كَادُوا۟

they were about (to)

kādū

لَيَفْتِنُونَكَ

tempt you away

layaftinūnaka

عَنِ

from

ʿani

ٱلَّذِىٓ

that which

alladhī

أَوْحَيْنَآ

We revealed

awḥaynā

إِلَيْكَ

to you

ilayka

لِتَفْتَرِىَ

that you invent

litaftariya

عَلَيْنَا

about Us

ʿalaynā

غَيْرَهُۥ ۖ

other (than) it

ghayrahu

وَإِذًۭا

And then

wa-idhan

لَّٱتَّخَذُوكَ

surely they would take you

la-ittakhadhūka

خَلِيلًۭا

(as) a friend

khalīlan

٧٣

And indeed, they were about to tempt you away from that which We revealed to you in order to [make] you invent about Us something else; and then they would have taken you as a friend.

— Saheeh International

وَلَوْلَآ

And if not

walawlā

أَن

[that]

an

ثَبَّتْنَـٰكَ

We (had) strengthened you

thabbatnāka

لَقَدْ

certainly

laqad

كِدتَّ

you almost

kidtta

تَرْكَنُ

(would) have inclined

tarkanu

إِلَيْهِمْ

to them

ilayhim

شَيْـًۭٔا

(in) something

shayan

قَلِيلًا

a little

qalīlan

٧٤

And if We had not strengthened you, you would have almost inclined to them a little.

— Saheeh International

إِذًۭا

Then

idhan

لَّأَذَقْنَـٰكَ

We (would) have made you taste

la-adhaqnāka

ضِعْفَ

double

ḍiʿ'fa

ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ

(in) the life

l-ḥayati

وَضِعْفَ

and double

waḍiʿ'fa

ٱلْمَمَاتِ

(after) the death

l-mamāti

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

لَا

not

تَجِدُ

you (would) have found

tajidu

لَكَ

for you

laka

عَلَيْنَا

against Us

ʿalaynā

نَصِيرًۭا

any helper

naṣīran

٧٥

Then [if you had], We would have made you taste double [punishment in] life and double [after] death. Then you would not find for yourself against Us a helper.

— Saheeh International

وَإِن

And indeed

wa-in

كَادُوا۟

they were about

kādū

لَيَسْتَفِزُّونَكَ

(to) scare you

layastafizzūnaka

مِنَ

from

mina

ٱلْأَرْضِ

the land

l-arḍi

لِيُخْرِجُوكَ

that they evict you

liyukh'rijūka

مِنْهَا ۖ

from it

min'hā

وَإِذًۭا

But then

wa-idhan

لَّا

not

يَلْبَثُونَ

they (would) have stayed

yalbathūna

خِلَـٰفَكَ

after you

khilāfaka

إِلَّا

except

illā

قَلِيلًۭا

a little

qalīlan

٧٦

And indeed, they were about to provoke [i.e., drive] you from the land [i.e., Makkah] to evict you therefrom. And then [when they do], they will not remain [there] after you, except for a little.1

— Saheeh International

سُنَّةَ

(Such is Our) Way

sunnata

مَن

(for) whom

man

قَدْ

[verily]

qad

أَرْسَلْنَا

We sent

arsalnā

قَبْلَكَ

before you

qablaka

مِن

of

min

رُّسُلِنَا ۖ

Our Messengers

rusulinā

وَلَا

And not

walā

تَجِدُ

you will find

tajidu

لِسُنَّتِنَا

(in) Our way

lisunnatinā

تَحْوِيلًا

any alteration

taḥwīlan

٧٧

[That is Our] established way for those We had sent before you of Our messengers; and you will not find in Our way any alteration.

— Saheeh International

أَقِمِ

Establish

aqimi

ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ

the prayer

l-ṣalata

لِدُلُوكِ

at the decline

lidulūki

ٱلشَّمْسِ

(of) the sun

l-shamsi

إِلَىٰ

till

ilā

غَسَقِ

(the) darkness

ghasaqi

ٱلَّيْلِ

(of) the night

al-layli

وَقُرْءَانَ

and Quran

waqur'āna

ٱلْفَجْرِ ۖ

at dawn

l-fajri

إِنَّ

indeed

inna

قُرْءَانَ

the Quran

qur'āna

ٱلْفَجْرِ

(at) the dawn

l-fajri

كَانَ

is

kāna

مَشْهُودًۭا

ever witnessed

mashhūdan

٧٨

Establish prayer at the decline of the sun [from its meridian] until the darkness of the night1 and [also] the Qur’ān [i.e., recitation] of dawn.2 Indeed, the recitation of dawn is ever witnessed.

— Saheeh International

وَمِنَ

And from

wamina

ٱلَّيْلِ

the night

al-layli

فَتَهَجَّدْ

arise from sleep for prayer

fatahajjad

بِهِۦ

with it

bihi

نَافِلَةًۭ

(as) additional

nāfilatan

لَّكَ

for you

laka

عَسَىٰٓ

it may be

ʿasā

أَن

that

an

يَبْعَثَكَ

will raise you

yabʿathaka

رَبُّكَ

your Lord

rabbuka

مَقَامًۭا

(to) a station

maqāman

مَّحْمُودًۭا

praiseworthy

maḥmūdan

٧٩

And from [part of] the night, pray1 with it [i.e., recitation of the Qur’ān] as additional [worship] for you; it is expected that2 your Lord will resurrect you to a praised station.3

— Saheeh International

وَقُل

And say

waqul

رَّبِّ

My Lord

rabbi

أَدْخِلْنِى

Cause me to enter

adkhil'nī

مُدْخَلَ

an entrance

mud'khala

صِدْقٍۢ

sound

ṣid'qin

وَأَخْرِجْنِى

and cause me to exit

wa-akhrij'nī

مُخْرَجَ

an exit

mukh'raja

صِدْقٍۢ

sound

ṣid'qin

وَٱجْعَل

and make

wa-ij'ʿal

لِّى

for me

مِن

from

min

لَّدُنكَ

near You

ladunka

سُلْطَـٰنًۭا

an authority

sul'ṭānan

نَّصِيرًۭا

helping

naṣīran

٨٠

And say, "My Lord, cause me to enter a sound entrance1 and to exit a sound exit2 and grant me from Yourself a supporting authority."

— Saheeh International

وَقُلْ

And say

waqul

جَآءَ

Has come

jāa

ٱلْحَقُّ

the truth

l-ḥaqu

وَزَهَقَ

and perished

wazahaqa

ٱلْبَـٰطِلُ ۚ

the falsehood

l-bāṭilu

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱلْبَـٰطِلَ

the falsehood

l-bāṭila

كَانَ

is

kāna

زَهُوقًۭا

(bound) to perish

zahūqan

٨١

And say, "Truth has come, and falsehood has departed. Indeed is falsehood, [by nature], ever bound to depart."

— Saheeh International

وَنُنَزِّلُ

And We reveal

wanunazzilu

مِنَ

from

mina

ٱلْقُرْءَانِ

the Quran

l-qur'āni

مَا

that

هُوَ

it

huwa

شِفَآءٌۭ

(is) a healing

shifāon

وَرَحْمَةٌۭ

and a mercy

waraḥmatun

لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ ۙ

for the believers

lil'mu'minīna

وَلَا

but not

walā

يَزِيدُ

it increases

yazīdu

ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ

the wrongdoers

l-ẓālimīna

إِلَّا

except

illā

خَسَارًۭا

(in) loss

khasāran

٨٢

And We send down of the Qur’ān that which is healing and mercy for the believers, but it does not increase the wrongdoers except in loss.

— Saheeh International

وَإِذَآ

And when

wa-idhā

أَنْعَمْنَا

We bestow favor

anʿamnā

عَلَى

on

ʿalā

ٱلْإِنسَـٰنِ

man

l-insāni

أَعْرَضَ

he turns away

aʿraḍa

وَنَـَٔا

and becomes remote

wanaā

بِجَانِبِهِۦ ۖ

on his side

bijānibihi

وَإِذَا

And when

wa-idhā

مَسَّهُ

touches him

massahu

ٱلشَّرُّ

the evil

l-sharu

كَانَ

he is

kāna

يَـُٔوسًۭا

(in) despair

yaūsan

٨٣

And when We bestow favor upon man [i.e., the disbeliever], he turns away and distances himself; and when evil touches him, he is ever despairing.

— Saheeh International

قُلْ

Say

qul

كُلٌّۭ

Each

kullun

يَعْمَلُ

works

yaʿmalu

عَلَىٰ

on

ʿalā

شَاكِلَتِهِۦ

his manner

shākilatihi

فَرَبُّكُمْ

but your Lord

farabbukum

أَعْلَمُ

(is) most knowing

aʿlamu

بِمَنْ

of who

biman

هُوَ

[he]

huwa

أَهْدَىٰ

(is) best guided

ahdā

سَبِيلًۭا

(in) way

sabīlan

٨٤

Say, "Each works according to his manner, but your Lord is most knowing of who is best guided in way."

— Saheeh International

وَيَسْـَٔلُونَكَ

And they ask you

wayasalūnaka

عَنِ

concerning

ʿani

ٱلرُّوحِ ۖ

the soul

l-rūḥi

قُلِ

Say

quli

ٱلرُّوحُ

The soul

l-rūḥu

مِنْ

(is) of

min

أَمْرِ

(the) affair

amri

رَبِّى

(of) my Lord

rabbī

وَمَآ

And not

wamā

أُوتِيتُم

you have been given

ūtītum

مِّنَ

of

mina

ٱلْعِلْمِ

the knowledge

l-ʿil'mi

إِلَّا

except

illā

قَلِيلًۭا

a little

qalīlan

٨٥

And they ask you, [O Muḥammad], about the soul. Say, "The soul is of the affair [i.e., concern] of my Lord. And you [i.e., mankind] have not been given of knowledge except a little."

— Saheeh International

وَلَئِن

And if

wala-in

شِئْنَا

We willed

shi'nā

لَنَذْهَبَنَّ

We (would) have surely taken away

lanadhhabanna

بِٱلَّذِىٓ

that which

bi-alladhī

أَوْحَيْنَآ

We have revealed

awḥaynā

إِلَيْكَ

to you

ilayka

ثُمَّ

Then

thumma

لَا

not

تَجِدُ

you would find

tajidu

لَكَ

for you

laka

بِهِۦ

concerning it

bihi

عَلَيْنَا

against Us

ʿalaynā

وَكِيلًا

any advocate

wakīlan

٨٦

And if We willed, We could surely do away with that which We revealed to you. Then you would not find for yourself concerning it an advocate against Us.

— Saheeh International

إِلَّا

Except

illā

رَحْمَةًۭ

a mercy

raḥmatan

مِّن

from

min

رَّبِّكَ ۚ

your Lord

rabbika

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

فَضْلَهُۥ

His Bounty

faḍlahu

كَانَ

is

kāna

عَلَيْكَ

upon you

ʿalayka

كَبِيرًۭا

great

kabīran

٨٧

Except [We have left it with you] as a mercy from your Lord. Indeed, His favor upon you has ever been great.

— Saheeh International

قُل

Say

qul

لَّئِنِ

If

la-ini

ٱجْتَمَعَتِ

gathered

ij'tamaʿati

ٱلْإِنسُ

the mankind

l-insu

وَٱلْجِنُّ

and the jinn

wal-jinu

عَلَىٰٓ

to

ʿalā

أَن

[that]

an

يَأْتُوا۟

bring

yatū

بِمِثْلِ

the like

bimith'li

هَـٰذَا

(of) this

hādhā

ٱلْقُرْءَانِ

Quran

l-qur'āni

لَا

not

يَأْتُونَ

they (could) bring

yatūna

بِمِثْلِهِۦ

the like of it

bimith'lihi

وَلَوْ

even if

walaw

كَانَ

were

kāna

بَعْضُهُمْ

some of them

baʿḍuhum

لِبَعْضٍۢ

to some others

libaʿḍin

ظَهِيرًۭا

assistants

ẓahīran

٨٨

Say, "If mankind and the jinn gathered in order to produce the like of this Qur’ān, they could not produce the like of it, even if they were to each other assistants."

— Saheeh International

وَلَقَدْ

And verily

walaqad

صَرَّفْنَا

We have explained

ṣarrafnā

لِلنَّاسِ

to mankind

lilnnāsi

فِى

in

هَـٰذَا

this

hādhā

ٱلْقُرْءَانِ

Quran

l-qur'āni

مِن

from

min

كُلِّ

every

kulli

مَثَلٍۢ

example

mathalin

فَأَبَىٰٓ

but refused

fa-abā

أَكْثَرُ

most

aktharu

ٱلنَّاسِ

(of) the mankind

l-nāsi

إِلَّا

except

illā

كُفُورًۭا

disbelief

kufūran

٨٩

And We have certainly diversified for the people in this Qur’ān from every [kind of] example, but most of the people refused except disbelief.

— Saheeh International

وَقَالُوا۟

And they say

waqālū

لَن

Never

lan

نُّؤْمِنَ

we will believe

nu'mina

لَكَ

in you

laka

حَتَّىٰ

until

ḥattā

تَفْجُرَ

you cause to gush forth

tafjura

لَنَا

for us

lanā

مِنَ

from

mina

ٱلْأَرْضِ

the earth

l-arḍi

يَنۢبُوعًا

a spring

yanbūʿan

٩٠

And they say, "We will not believe you until you break open for us from the ground a spring

— Saheeh International

أَوْ

Or

aw

تَكُونَ

you have

takūna

لَكَ

for you

laka

جَنَّةٌۭ

a garden

jannatun

مِّن

of

min

نَّخِيلٍۢ

date-palms

nakhīlin

وَعِنَبٍۢ

and grapes

waʿinabin

فَتُفَجِّرَ

and cause to gush forth

fatufajjira

ٱلْأَنْهَـٰرَ

the rivers

l-anhāra

خِلَـٰلَهَا

within them

khilālahā

تَفْجِيرًا

abundantly

tafjīran

٩١

Or [until] you have a garden of palm trees and grapes and make rivers gush forth within them in force [and abundance]

— Saheeh International

أَوْ

Or

aw

تُسْقِطَ

you cause to fall

tus'qiṭa

ٱلسَّمَآءَ

the sky

l-samāa

كَمَا

as

kamā

زَعَمْتَ

you have claimed

zaʿamta

عَلَيْنَا

upon us

ʿalaynā

كِسَفًا

(in) pieces

kisafan

أَوْ

or

aw

تَأْتِىَ

you bring

tatiya

بِٱللَّهِ

Allah

bil-lahi

وَٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِ

and the Angels

wal-malāikati

قَبِيلًا

before (us)

qabīlan

٩٢

Or you make the heaven fall upon us in fragments as you have claimed or you bring Allāh and the angels before [us]

— Saheeh International

أَوْ

Or

aw

يَكُونَ

is

yakūna

لَكَ

for you

laka

بَيْتٌۭ

a house

baytun

مِّن

of

min

زُخْرُفٍ

ornament

zukh'rufin

أَوْ

or

aw

تَرْقَىٰ

you ascend

tarqā

فِى

into

ٱلسَّمَآءِ

the sky

l-samāi

وَلَن

And never

walan

نُّؤْمِنَ

we will believe

nu'mina

لِرُقِيِّكَ

in your ascension

liruqiyyika

حَتَّىٰ

until

ḥattā

تُنَزِّلَ

you bring down

tunazzila

عَلَيْنَا

to us

ʿalaynā

كِتَـٰبًۭا

a book

kitāban

نَّقْرَؤُهُۥ ۗ

we could read it

naqra-uhu

قُلْ

Say

qul

سُبْحَانَ

Glorified (is)

sub'ḥāna

رَبِّى

my Lord

rabbī

هَلْ

What

hal

كُنتُ

am I

kuntu

إِلَّا

but

illā

بَشَرًۭا

a human

basharan

رَّسُولًۭا

a Messenger

rasūlan

٩٣

Or you have a house of ornament [i.e., gold] or you ascend into the sky. And [even then], we will not believe in your ascension until you bring down to us a book we may read." Say, "Exalted is my Lord! Was I ever but a human messenger?"

— Saheeh International

وَمَا

And what

wamā

مَنَعَ

prevented

manaʿa

ٱلنَّاسَ

the people

l-nāsa

أَن

that

an

يُؤْمِنُوٓا۟

they believe

yu'minū

إِذْ

when

idh

جَآءَهُمُ

came to them

jāahumu

ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ

the guidance

l-hudā

إِلَّآ

except

illā

أَن

that

an

قَالُوٓا۟

they said

qālū

أَبَعَثَ

Has Allah sent

abaʿatha

ٱللَّهُ

Has Allah sent

l-lahu

بَشَرًۭا

a human

basharan

رَّسُولًۭا

Messenger

rasūlan

٩٤

And what prevented the people from believing when guidance came to them except that they said, "Has Allāh sent a human messenger?"

— Saheeh International

قُل

Say

qul

لَّوْ

If

law

كَانَ

(there) were

kāna

فِى

in

ٱلْأَرْضِ

the earth

l-arḍi

مَلَـٰٓئِكَةٌۭ

Angels

malāikatun

يَمْشُونَ

walking

yamshūna

مُطْمَئِنِّينَ

securely

muṭ'ma-innīna

لَنَزَّلْنَا

surely We (would) have sent down

lanazzalnā

عَلَيْهِم

to them

ʿalayhim

مِّنَ

from

mina

ٱلسَّمَآءِ

the heaven

l-samāi

مَلَكًۭا

an Angel

malakan

رَّسُولًۭا

(as) a Messenger

rasūlan

٩٥

Say, "If there were upon the earth angels walking securely,1 We would have sent down to them from the heaven an angel [as a] messenger."

— Saheeh International

قُلْ

Say

qul

كَفَىٰ

Sufficient is

kafā

بِٱللَّهِ

Allah

bil-lahi

شَهِيدًۢا

(as) a witness

shahīdan

بَيْنِى

between me

baynī

وَبَيْنَكُمْ ۚ

and between you

wabaynakum

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed, He

innahu

كَانَ

is

kāna

بِعِبَادِهِۦ

of His slaves

biʿibādihi

خَبِيرًۢا

All-Aware

khabīran

بَصِيرًۭا

All-Seer

baṣīran

٩٦

Say, "Sufficient is Allāh as Witness between me and you. Indeed He is ever, concerning His servants, Aware and Seeing."

— Saheeh International

وَمَن

And whoever

waman

يَهْدِ

Allah guides

yahdi

ٱللَّهُ

Allah guides

l-lahu

فَهُوَ

then he (is)

fahuwa

ٱلْمُهْتَدِ ۖ

the guided one

l-muh'tadi

وَمَن

and whoever

waman

يُضْلِلْ

He lets go astray

yuḍ'lil

فَلَن

then never

falan

تَجِدَ

you will find

tajida

لَهُمْ

for them

lahum

أَوْلِيَآءَ

protectors

awliyāa

مِن

besides Him

min

دُونِهِۦ ۖ

besides Him

dūnihi

وَنَحْشُرُهُمْ

And We will gather them

wanaḥshuruhum

يَوْمَ

(on) the Day

yawma

ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ

(of) the Resurrection

l-qiyāmati

عَلَىٰ

on

ʿalā

وُجُوهِهِمْ

their faces

wujūhihim

عُمْيًۭا

blind

ʿum'yan

وَبُكْمًۭا

and dumb

wabuk'man

وَصُمًّۭا ۖ

and deaf

waṣumman

مَّأْوَىٰهُمْ

Their abode

mawāhum

جَهَنَّمُ ۖ

(is) Hell

jahannamu

كُلَّمَا

every time

kullamā

خَبَتْ

it subsides

khabat

زِدْنَـٰهُمْ

We (will) increase (for) them

zid'nāhum

سَعِيرًۭا

the blazing fire

saʿīran

٩٧

And whoever Allāh guides - he is the [rightly] guided; and whoever He sends astray1 - you will never find for them protectors besides Him, and We will gather them on the Day of Resurrection [fallen] on their faces - blind, dumb and deaf. Their refuge is Hell; every time it subsides, We increase [for] them blazing fire.

— Saheeh International

ذَٰلِكَ

That

dhālika

جَزَآؤُهُم

(is) their recompense

jazāuhum

بِأَنَّهُمْ

because they

bi-annahum

كَفَرُوا۟

disbelieved

kafarū

بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا

in Our Verses

biāyātinā

وَقَالُوٓا۟

and said

waqālū

أَءِذَا

When

a-idhā

كُنَّا

we are

kunnā

عِظَـٰمًۭا

bones

ʿiẓāman

وَرُفَـٰتًا

and crumbled particles

warufātan

أَءِنَّا

will we

a-innā

لَمَبْعُوثُونَ

surely (be) resurrected

lamabʿūthūna

خَلْقًۭا

(as) a creation

khalqan

جَدِيدًا

new

jadīdan

٩٨

That is their recompense because they disbelieved in Our verses and said, "When we are bones and crumbled particles, will we [truly] be resurrected [in] a new creation?"

— Saheeh International

۞ أَوَلَمْ

Do not

awalam

يَرَوْا۟

they see

yaraw

أَنَّ

that

anna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

ٱلَّذِى

the One Who

alladhī

خَلَقَ

created

khalaqa

ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ

the heavens

l-samāwāti

وَٱلْأَرْضَ

and the earth

wal-arḍa

قَادِرٌ

(is) Able

qādirun

عَلَىٰٓ

[on]

ʿalā

أَن

to

an

يَخْلُقَ

create

yakhluqa

مِثْلَهُمْ

the like of them

mith'lahum

وَجَعَلَ

And He has made

wajaʿala

لَهُمْ

for them

lahum

أَجَلًۭا

a term

ajalan

لَّا

no

رَيْبَ

doubt

rayba

فِيهِ

in it

fīhi

فَأَبَى

But refused

fa-abā

ٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَ

the wrongdoers

l-ẓālimūna

إِلَّا

except

illā

كُفُورًۭا

disbelief

kufūran

٩٩

Do they not see that Allāh, who created the heavens and earth, is [the one] Able to create the likes of them? And He has appointed for them a term, about which there is no doubt. But the wrongdoers refuse except disbelief.

— Saheeh International

قُل

Say

qul

لَّوْ

If

law

أَنتُمْ

you

antum

تَمْلِكُونَ

possess

tamlikūna

خَزَآئِنَ

the treasures

khazāina

رَحْمَةِ

(of) the Mercy

raḥmati

رَبِّىٓ

(of) my Lord

rabbī

إِذًۭا

then

idhan

لَّأَمْسَكْتُمْ

surely you would withhold

la-amsaktum

خَشْيَةَ

(out of) fear

khashyata

ٱلْإِنفَاقِ ۚ

(of) spending

l-infāqi

وَكَانَ

And is

wakāna

ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ

man

l-insānu

قَتُورًۭا

stingy

qatūran

١٠٠

Say [to them], "If you possessed the depositories of the mercy of my Lord, then you would withhold out of fear of spending." And ever has man been stingy.

— Saheeh International

وَلَقَدْ

And certainly

walaqad

ءَاتَيْنَا

We had given

ātaynā

مُوسَىٰ

Musa

mūsā

تِسْعَ

nine

tis'ʿa

ءَايَـٰتٍۭ

Signs

āyātin

بَيِّنَـٰتٍۢ ۖ

clear

bayyinātin

فَسْـَٔلْ

so ask

fasal

بَنِىٓ

(the) Children of Israel

banī

إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ

(the) Children of Israel

is'rāīla

إِذْ

when

idh

جَآءَهُمْ

he came to them

jāahum

فَقَالَ

then said

faqāla

لَهُۥ

to him

lahu

فِرْعَوْنُ

Firaun

fir'ʿawnu

إِنِّى

Indeed, I

innī

لَأَظُنُّكَ

[I] think you

la-aẓunnuka

يَـٰمُوسَىٰ

O Musa

yāmūsā

مَسْحُورًۭا

(you are) bewitched

masḥūran

١٠١

And We had certainly given Moses nine evident signs, so ask the Children of Israel [about] when he came to them and Pharaoh said to him, "Indeed I think, O Moses, that you are affected by magic."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

لَقَدْ

Verily

laqad

عَلِمْتَ

you have known

ʿalim'ta

مَآ

none

أَنزَلَ

has sent down

anzala

هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ

these

hāulāi

إِلَّا

except

illā

رَبُّ

(the) Lord

rabbu

ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ

(of) the heavens

l-samāwāti

وَٱلْأَرْضِ

and the earth

wal-arḍi

بَصَآئِرَ

(as) evidence

baṣāira

وَإِنِّى

and indeed, I

wa-innī

لَأَظُنُّكَ

[I] surely think you

la-aẓunnuka

يَـٰفِرْعَوْنُ

O Firaun

yāfir'ʿawnu

مَثْبُورًۭا

(you are) destroyed

mathbūran

١٠٢

[Moses] said, "You have already known that none has sent down these [signs] except the Lord of the heavens and the earth as evidence, and indeed I think,1 O Pharaoh, that you are destroyed."

— Saheeh International

فَأَرَادَ

So he intended

fa-arāda

أَن

to

an

يَسْتَفِزَّهُم

drive them out

yastafizzahum

مِّنَ

from

mina

ٱلْأَرْضِ

the land

l-arḍi

فَأَغْرَقْنَـٰهُ

but We drowned him

fa-aghraqnāhu

وَمَن

and who

waman

مَّعَهُۥ

(were) with him

maʿahu

جَمِيعًۭا

all

jamīʿan

١٠٣

So he intended to drive them from the land, but We drowned him and those with him all together.

— Saheeh International

وَقُلْنَا

And We said

waqul'nā

مِنۢ

after him

min

بَعْدِهِۦ

after him

baʿdihi

لِبَنِىٓ

to the Children of Israel

libanī

إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ

to the Children of Israel

is'rāīla

ٱسْكُنُوا۟

Dwell

us'kunū

ٱلْأَرْضَ

(in) the land

l-arḍa

فَإِذَا

then when

fa-idhā

جَآءَ

comes

jāa

وَعْدُ

(the) promise

waʿdu

ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ

(of) the Hereafter

l-ākhirati

جِئْنَا

We will bring

ji'nā

بِكُمْ

you

bikum

لَفِيفًۭا

(as) a mixed crowd

lafīfan

١٠٤

And We said after him [i.e., Pharaoh] to the Children of Israel, "Dwell in the land, and when there comes the promise [i.e., appointment] of the Hereafter, We will bring you forth in [one] gathering."

— Saheeh International

وَبِٱلْحَقِّ

And with the truth

wabil-ḥaqi

أَنزَلْنَـٰهُ

We sent it down

anzalnāhu

وَبِٱلْحَقِّ

and with the truth

wabil-ḥaqi

نَزَلَ ۗ

it descended

nazala

وَمَآ

And not

wamā

أَرْسَلْنَـٰكَ

We sent you

arsalnāka

إِلَّا

except

illā

مُبَشِّرًۭا

(as) a bearer of glad tidings

mubashiran

وَنَذِيرًۭا

and a warner

wanadhīran

١٠٥

And with the truth We have sent it [i.e., the Qur’ān] down, and with the truth it has descended. And We have not sent you, [O Muḥammad], except as a bringer of good tidings and a warner.

— Saheeh International

وَقُرْءَانًۭا

And the Quran

waqur'ānan

فَرَقْنَـٰهُ

We have divided

faraqnāhu

لِتَقْرَأَهُۥ

that you might recite it

litaqra-ahu

عَلَى

to

ʿalā

ٱلنَّاسِ

the people

l-nāsi

عَلَىٰ

at

ʿalā

مُكْثٍۢ

intervals

muk'thin

وَنَزَّلْنَـٰهُ

And We have revealed it

wanazzalnāhu

تَنزِيلًۭا

(in) stages

tanzīlan

١٠٦

And [it is] a Qur’ān which We have separated [by intervals] that you might recite it to the people over a prolonged period. And We have sent it down progressively.

— Saheeh International

قُلْ

Say

qul

ءَامِنُوا۟

Believe

āminū

بِهِۦٓ

in it

bihi

أَوْ

or

aw

لَا

(do) not

تُؤْمِنُوٓا۟ ۚ

believe

tu'minū

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

أُوتُوا۟

were given

ūtū

ٱلْعِلْمَ

the knowledge

l-ʿil'ma

مِن

before it

min

قَبْلِهِۦٓ

before it

qablihi

إِذَا

when

idhā

يُتْلَىٰ

it is recited

yut'lā

عَلَيْهِمْ

to them

ʿalayhim

يَخِرُّونَ

they fall

yakhirrūna

لِلْأَذْقَانِ

on their faces

lil'adhqāni

سُجَّدًۭا

(in) prostration

sujjadan

١٠٧

Say, "Believe in it or do not believe." Indeed, those who were given knowledge before it1 - when it is recited to them, they fall upon their faces in prostration,

— Saheeh International

وَيَقُولُونَ

And they say

wayaqūlūna

سُبْحَـٰنَ

Glory be to

sub'ḥāna

رَبِّنَآ

our Lord

rabbinā

إِن

Indeed

in

كَانَ

is

kāna

وَعْدُ

(the) promise

waʿdu

رَبِّنَا

(of) our Lord

rabbinā

لَمَفْعُولًۭا

surely fulfilled

lamafʿūlan

١٠٨

And they say, "Exalted is our Lord! Indeed, the promise of our Lord has been fulfilled."

— Saheeh International

وَيَخِرُّونَ

And they fall

wayakhirrūna

لِلْأَذْقَانِ

on their faces

lil'adhqāni

يَبْكُونَ

weeping

yabkūna

وَيَزِيدُهُمْ

and it increases them

wayazīduhum

خُشُوعًۭا ۩

(in) humility

khushūʿan

١٠٩

And they fall upon their faces weeping, and it [i.e., the Qur’ān] increases them in humble submission.

— Saheeh International

قُلِ

Say

quli

ٱدْعُوا۟

Invoke

id'ʿū

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

أَوِ

or

awi

ٱدْعُوا۟

invoke

id'ʿū

ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنَ ۖ

the Most Gracious

l-raḥmāna

أَيًّۭا

By whatever (name)

ayyan

مَّا

By whatever (name)

تَدْعُوا۟

you invoke

tadʿū

فَلَهُ

to Him (belongs)

falahu

ٱلْأَسْمَآءُ

the Most Beautiful Names

l-asmāu

ٱلْحُسْنَىٰ ۚ

the Most Beautiful Names

l-ḥus'nā

وَلَا

And (do) not

walā

تَجْهَرْ

be loud

tajhar

بِصَلَاتِكَ

in your prayers

biṣalātika

وَلَا

and not

walā

تُخَافِتْ

be silent

tukhāfit

بِهَا

therein

bihā

وَٱبْتَغِ

but seek

wa-ib'taghi

بَيْنَ

between

bayna

ذَٰلِكَ

that

dhālika

سَبِيلًۭا

a way

sabīlan

١١٠

Say, "Call upon Allāh or call upon the Most Merciful [ar-Raḥmān]. Whichever [name] you call - to Him belong the best names." And do not recite [too] loudly in your prayer or [too] quietly but seek between that an [intermediate] way.

— Saheeh International

وَقُلِ

And say

waquli

ٱلْحَمْدُ

All Praise

l-ḥamdu

لِلَّهِ

(is) for Allah

lillahi

ٱلَّذِى

the One Who

alladhī

لَمْ

has not taken

lam

يَتَّخِذْ

has not taken

yattakhidh

وَلَدًۭا

a son

waladan

وَلَمْ

and not

walam

يَكُن

is

yakun

لَّهُۥ

for Him

lahu

شَرِيكٌۭ

a partner

sharīkun

فِى

in

ٱلْمُلْكِ

the dominion

l-mul'ki

وَلَمْ

and not

walam

يَكُن

is

yakun

لَّهُۥ

for Him

lahu

وَلِىٌّۭ

any protector

waliyyun

مِّنَ

out of

mina

ٱلذُّلِّ ۖ

weakness

l-dhuli

وَكَبِّرْهُ

And magnify Him

wakabbir'hu

تَكْبِيرًۢا

(with all) magnificence

takbīran

١١١

And say, "Praise to Allāh, who has not taken a son and has had no partner in [His] dominion and has no [need of a] protector out of weakness; and glorify Him with [great] glorification."
