كِتَـٰبٌ

(This is) a Book

kitābun

أُحْكِمَتْ

are perfected

uḥ'kimat

ءَايَـٰتُهُۥ

its Verses

āyātuhu

ثُمَّ

moreover

thumma

فُصِّلَتْ

explained in detail

fuṣṣilat

مِن

from (he One Who)

min

لَّدُنْ

from (he One Who)

ladun

حَكِيمٍ

(is) All-Wise

ḥakīmin

خَبِيرٍ

All-Aware

khabīrin

١

Alif, Lām, Rā.1 [This is] a Book whose verses are perfected and then presented in detail from [one who is] Wise and Aware2

— Saheeh International

أَلَّا

That "Not

allā

تَعْبُدُوٓا۟

you worship

taʿbudū

إِلَّا

but

illā

ٱللَّهَ ۚ

Allah

l-laha

إِنَّنِى

Indeed, I am

innanī

لَكُم

to you

lakum

مِّنْهُ

from Him

min'hu

نَذِيرٌۭ

a warner

nadhīrun

وَبَشِيرٌۭ

and a bearer of glad tidings

wabashīrun

٢

[Through a messenger, saying], "Do not worship except Allāh. Indeed, I am to you from Him a warner and a bringer of good tidings,"

— Saheeh International

وَأَنِ

And that

wa-ani

ٱسْتَغْفِرُوا۟

Seek forgiveness

is'taghfirū

رَبَّكُمْ

(of) your Lord

rabbakum

ثُمَّ

and

thumma

تُوبُوٓا۟

turn in repentance

tūbū

إِلَيْهِ

to Him

ilayhi

يُمَتِّعْكُم

He will let you

yumattiʿ'kum

مَّتَـٰعًا

enjoy

matāʿan

حَسَنًا

a good

ḥasanan

إِلَىٰٓ

for

ilā

أَجَلٍۢ

a term

ajalin

مُّسَمًّۭى

appointed

musamman

وَيُؤْتِ

And give

wayu'ti

كُلَّ

(to) every

kulla

ذِى

owner

dhī

فَضْلٍۢ

(of) grace

faḍlin

فَضْلَهُۥ ۖ

His Grace

faḍlahu

وَإِن

But if

wa-in

تَوَلَّوْا۟

you turn away

tawallaw

فَإِنِّىٓ

then indeed, I

fa-innī

أَخَافُ

fear

akhāfu

عَلَيْكُمْ

for you

ʿalaykum

عَذَابَ

(the) punishment

ʿadhāba

يَوْمٍۢ

(of) a Great Day

yawmin

كَبِيرٍ

(of) a Great Day

kabīrin

٣

And [saying], "Seek forgiveness of your Lord and repent to Him, [and] He will let you enjoy a good provision for a specified term and give every doer of favor his favor [i.e., reward]. But if you turn away, then indeed, I fear for you the punishment of a great Day.

— Saheeh International

إِلَى

To

ilā

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

مَرْجِعُكُمْ ۖ

(is) your return

marjiʿukum

وَهُوَ

and He

wahuwa

عَلَىٰ

(is) on

ʿalā

كُلِّ

every

kulli

شَىْءٍۢ

thing

shayin

قَدِيرٌ

All-Powerful

qadīrun

٤

To Allāh is your return, and He is over all things competent."

— Saheeh International

أَلَآ

No doubt

alā

إِنَّهُمْ

They

innahum

يَثْنُونَ

fold up

yathnūna

صُدُورَهُمْ

their breasts

ṣudūrahum

لِيَسْتَخْفُوا۟

that they may hide

liyastakhfū

مِنْهُ ۚ

from Him

min'hu

أَلَا

Surely

alā

حِينَ

when

ḥīna

يَسْتَغْشُونَ

they cover (themselves)

yastaghshūna

ثِيَابَهُمْ

(with) their garments

thiyābahum

يَعْلَمُ

He knows

yaʿlamu

مَا

what

يُسِرُّونَ

they conceal

yusirrūna

وَمَا

and what

wamā

يُعْلِنُونَ ۚ

they reveal

yuʿ'linūna

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed, He

innahu

عَلِيمٌۢ

(is) All-Knower

ʿalīmun

بِذَاتِ

of what

bidhāti

ٱلصُّدُورِ

(is in) the breasts

l-ṣudūri

٥

Unquestionably, they [i.e., the disbelievers] turn away their breasts to hide themselves from him. Unquestionably, [even] when they cover themselves in their clothing, He [i.e., Allāh] knows what they conceal and what they declare. Indeed, He is Knowing of that within the breasts.

— Saheeh International

۞ وَمَا

And not

wamā

مِن

any

min

دَآبَّةٍۢ

moving creature

dābbatin

فِى

in

ٱلْأَرْضِ

the earth

l-arḍi

إِلَّا

but

illā

عَلَى

on

ʿalā

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

رِزْقُهَا

(is) its provision

riz'quhā

وَيَعْلَمُ

And He knows

wayaʿlamu

مُسْتَقَرَّهَا

its dwelling place

mus'taqarrahā

وَمُسْتَوْدَعَهَا ۚ

and its place of storage

wamus'tawdaʿahā

كُلٌّۭ

All

kullun

فِى

(is) in

كِتَـٰبٍۢ

a Record

kitābin

مُّبِينٍۢ

clear

mubīnin

٦

And there is no creature on earth but that upon Allāh is its provision, and He knows its place of dwelling and place of storage.1 All is in a clear register.

— Saheeh International

وَهُوَ

And He

wahuwa

ٱلَّذِى

(is) the One Who

alladhī

خَلَقَ

created

khalaqa

ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ

the heavens

l-samāwāti

وَٱلْأَرْضَ

and the earth

wal-arḍa

فِى

in

سِتَّةِ

six

sittati

أَيَّامٍۢ

epochs

ayyāmin

وَكَانَ

and His throne was

wakāna

عَرْشُهُۥ

and His throne was

ʿarshuhu

عَلَى

on

ʿalā

ٱلْمَآءِ

the water

l-māi

لِيَبْلُوَكُمْ

that He might test [you]

liyabluwakum

أَيُّكُمْ

which of you

ayyukum

أَحْسَنُ

(is) best

aḥsanu

عَمَلًۭا ۗ

(in) deed

ʿamalan

وَلَئِن

But if

wala-in

قُلْتَ

you say

qul'ta

إِنَّكُم

Indeed, you

innakum

مَّبْعُوثُونَ

(will be) resurrected

mabʿūthūna

مِنۢ

after

min

بَعْدِ

after

baʿdi

ٱلْمَوْتِ

[the] death

l-mawti

لَيَقُولَنَّ

surely would say

layaqūlanna

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

كَفَرُوٓا۟

disbelieved

kafarū

إِنْ

This is not

in

هَـٰذَآ

This is not

hādhā

إِلَّا

but

illā

سِحْرٌۭ

a magic

siḥ'run

مُّبِينٌۭ

clear

mubīnun

٧

And it is He who created the heavens and the earth in six days - and His Throne had been upon water - that He might test you as to which of you is best in deed. But if you say, "Indeed, you are resurrected after death," those who disbelieve will surely say, "This is not but obvious magic."

— Saheeh International

وَلَئِنْ

And if

wala-in

أَخَّرْنَا

We delay

akharnā

عَنْهُمُ

from them

ʿanhumu

ٱلْعَذَابَ

the punishment

l-ʿadhāba

إِلَىٰٓ

for

ilā

أُمَّةٍۢ

a time

ummatin

مَّعْدُودَةٍۢ

determined

maʿdūdatin

لَّيَقُولُنَّ

they will surely say

layaqūlunna

مَا

What

يَحْبِسُهُۥٓ ۗ

detains it

yaḥbisuhu

أَلَا

No doubt

alā

يَوْمَ

(On) the Day

yawma

يَأْتِيهِمْ

it comes to them

yatīhim

لَيْسَ

not

laysa

مَصْرُوفًا

(will be) averted

maṣrūfan

عَنْهُمْ

from them

ʿanhum

وَحَاقَ

and will surround

waḥāqa

بِهِم

them

bihim

مَّا

what

كَانُوا۟

they used (to)

kānū

بِهِۦ

mock at [it]

bihi

يَسْتَهْزِءُونَ

mock at [it]

yastahziūna

٨

And if We hold back from them the punishment for a limited time, they will surely say,1 "What detains it?" Unquestionably, on the Day it comes to them, it will not be averted from them, and they will be enveloped by what they used to ridicule.

— Saheeh International

وَلَئِنْ

And if

wala-in

أَذَقْنَا

We give man a taste

adhaqnā

ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ

We give man a taste

l-insāna

مِنَّا

(of) Mercy from Us

minnā

رَحْمَةًۭ

(of) Mercy from Us

raḥmatan

ثُمَّ

then

thumma

نَزَعْنَـٰهَا

We withdraw it

nazaʿnāhā

مِنْهُ

from him

min'hu

إِنَّهُۥ

indeed, he

innahu

لَيَـُٔوسٌۭ

(is) despairing

layaūsun

كَفُورٌۭ

(and) ungrateful

kafūrun

٩

And if We give man a taste of mercy from Us and then We withdraw it from him, indeed, he is despairing and ungrateful.

— Saheeh International

وَلَئِنْ

But if

wala-in

أَذَقْنَـٰهُ

We give him a taste

adhaqnāhu

نَعْمَآءَ

(of) favor

naʿmāa

بَعْدَ

after

baʿda

ضَرَّآءَ

hardship

ḍarrāa

مَسَّتْهُ

(has) touched him

massathu

لَيَقُولَنَّ

surely, he will say

layaqūlanna

ذَهَبَ

Have gone

dhahaba

ٱلسَّيِّـَٔاتُ

the evils

l-sayiātu

عَنِّىٓ ۚ

from me

ʿannī

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed, he

innahu

لَفَرِحٌۭ

(is) exultant

lafariḥun

فَخُورٌ

(and) boastful

fakhūrun

١٠

But if We give him a taste of favor after hardship has touched him, he will surely say, "Bad times have left me." Indeed, he is exultant and boastful -

— Saheeh International

إِلَّا

Except

illā

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

صَبَرُوا۟

(are) patient

ṣabarū

وَعَمِلُوا۟

and do

waʿamilū

ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ

the good deeds

l-ṣāliḥāti

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

those

ulāika

لَهُم

for them

lahum

مَّغْفِرَةٌۭ

(will be) forgiveness

maghfiratun

وَأَجْرٌۭ

and a reward

wa-ajrun

كَبِيرٌۭ

great

kabīrun

١١

Except for those who are patient and do righteous deeds; those will have forgiveness and great reward.

— Saheeh International

فَلَعَلَّكَ

Then possibly you

falaʿallaka

تَارِكٌۢ

(may) give up

tārikun

بَعْضَ

a part

baʿḍa

مَا

(of) what

يُوحَىٰٓ

is revealed

yūḥā

إِلَيْكَ

to you

ilayka

وَضَآئِقٌۢ

and straitened

waḍāiqun

بِهِۦ

by it

bihi

صَدْرُكَ

your breast

ṣadruka

أَن

because

an

يَقُولُوا۟

they say

yaqūlū

لَوْلَآ

Why not

lawlā

أُنزِلَ

is sent down

unzila

عَلَيْهِ

for him

ʿalayhi

كَنزٌ

a treasure

kanzun

أَوْ

or

aw

جَآءَ

has come

jāa

مَعَهُۥ

with him

maʿahu

مَلَكٌ ۚ

an Angel

malakun

إِنَّمَآ

Only

innamā

أَنتَ

you

anta

نَذِيرٌۭ ۚ

(are) a warner

nadhīrun

وَٱللَّهُ

And Allah

wal-lahu

عَلَىٰ

(is) on

ʿalā

كُلِّ

every

kulli

شَىْءٍۢ

thing

shayin

وَكِيلٌ

a Guardian

wakīlun

١٢

Then would you possibly leave [out] some of what is revealed to you,1 or is your breast constrained by it because they say, "Why has there not been sent down to him a treasure or come with him an angel?" But you are only a warner. And Allāh is Disposer of all things.

— Saheeh International

أَمْ

Or

am

يَقُولُونَ

they say

yaqūlūna

افْتَرَاهُ ۖ

He has fabricated it

if'tarāhu

قُلْ

Say

qul

فَأْتُوا۟

Then bring

fatū

بِعَشْرِ

ten

biʿashri

سُوَرٍۢ

Surahs

suwarin

مِّثْلِهِۦ

like it

mith'lihi

مُفْتَرَيَـٰتٍۢ

fabricated

muf'tarayātin

وَٱدْعُوا۟

and call

wa-id'ʿū

مَنِ

whoever

mani

ٱسْتَطَعْتُم

you can

is'taṭaʿtum

مِّن

besides Allah

min

دُونِ

besides Allah

dūni

ٱللَّهِ

besides Allah

l-lahi

إِن

if

in

كُنتُمْ

you are

kuntum

صَـٰدِقِينَ

truthful

ṣādiqīna

١٣

Or do they say, "He invented it"? Say, "Then bring ten sūrahs like it that have been invented and call upon [for assistance] whomever you can besides Allāh, if you should be truthful."

— Saheeh International

فَإِلَّمْ

Then if not

fa-illam

يَسْتَجِيبُوا۟

they respond

yastajībū

لَكُمْ

to you

lakum

فَٱعْلَمُوٓا۟

then know

fa-iʿ'lamū

أَنَّمَآ

that

annamā

أُنزِلَ

it was sent down

unzila

بِعِلْمِ

with the knowledge of Allah

biʿil'mi

ٱللَّهِ

with the knowledge of Allah

l-lahi

وَأَن

and that

wa-an

لَّآ

(there is) no

إِلَـٰهَ

god

ilāha

إِلَّا

except

illā

هُوَ ۖ

Him

huwa

فَهَلْ

Then, would

fahal

أَنتُم

you

antum

مُّسْلِمُونَ

(be) Muslims

mus'limūna

١٤

And if they do not respond to you - then know that it [i.e., the Qur’ān] was revealed with the knowledge of Allāh1 and that there is no deity except Him. Then,2 would you [not] be Muslims?

— Saheeh International

مَن

Whoever [is]

man

كَانَ

Whoever [is]

kāna

يُرِيدُ

desires

yurīdu

ٱلْحَيَوٰةَ

the life

l-ḥayata

ٱلدُّنْيَا

(of) the world

l-dun'yā

وَزِينَتَهَا

and its adornments

wazīnatahā

نُوَفِّ

We will repay in full

nuwaffi

إِلَيْهِمْ

to them

ilayhim

أَعْمَـٰلَهُمْ

(for) their deeds

aʿmālahum

فِيهَا

therein

fīhā

وَهُمْ

and they

wahum

فِيهَا

in it

fīhā

لَا

will not be lessened

يُبْخَسُونَ

will not be lessened

yub'khasūna

١٥

Whoever desires the life of this world and its adornments - We fully repay them for their deeds therein,1 and they therein will not be deprived.

— Saheeh International

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

Those

ulāika

ٱلَّذِينَ

(are) the ones who

alladhīna

لَيْسَ

(is) not

laysa

لَهُمْ

for them

lahum

فِى

in

ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ

the Hereafter

l-ākhirati

إِلَّا

except

illā

ٱلنَّارُ ۖ

the Fire

l-nāru

وَحَبِطَ

And (has) gone in vain

waḥabiṭa

مَا

what

صَنَعُوا۟

they did

ṣanaʿū

فِيهَا

therein

fīhā

وَبَـٰطِلٌۭ

and (is) worthless

wabāṭilun

مَّا

what

كَانُوا۟

they used (to)

kānū

يَعْمَلُونَ

do

yaʿmalūna

١٦

Those are the ones for whom there is not in the Hereafter but the Fire. And lost is what they did therein,1 and worthless is what they used to do.

— Saheeh International

أَفَمَن

Then is he who

afaman

كَانَ

is

kāna

عَلَىٰ

on

ʿalā

بَيِّنَةٍۢ

a clear proof

bayyinatin

مِّن

from

min

رَّبِّهِۦ

his Lord

rabbihi

وَيَتْلُوهُ

and recites it

wayatlūhu

شَاهِدٌۭ

a witness

shāhidun

مِّنْهُ

from Him

min'hu

وَمِن

and before it

wamin

قَبْلِهِۦ

and before it

qablihi

كِتَـٰبُ

(was) a Book

kitābu

مُوسَىٰٓ

(of) Musa

mūsā

إِمَامًۭا

(as) a guide

imāman

وَرَحْمَةً ۚ

and (as) mercy

waraḥmatan

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

Those

ulāika

يُؤْمِنُونَ

believe

yu'minūna

بِهِۦ ۚ

in it

bihi

وَمَن

But whoever

waman

يَكْفُرْ

disbelieves

yakfur

بِهِۦ

in it

bihi

مِنَ

among

mina

ٱلْأَحْزَابِ

the sects

l-aḥzābi

فَٱلنَّارُ

then the Fire

fal-nāru

مَوْعِدُهُۥ ۚ

(will be) his promised (meeting) place

mawʿiduhu

فَلَا

So (do) not

falā

تَكُ

be

taku

فِى

in

مِرْيَةٍۢ

doubt

mir'yatin

مِّنْهُ ۚ

about it

min'hu

إِنَّهُ

Indeed, it

innahu

ٱلْحَقُّ

(is) the truth

l-ḥaqu

مِن

from

min

رَّبِّكَ

your Lord

rabbika

وَلَـٰكِنَّ

but

walākinna

أَكْثَرَ

most

akthara

ٱلنَّاسِ

(of) the people

l-nāsi

لَا

(do) not

يُؤْمِنُونَ

believe

yu'minūna

١٧

So is one who [stands] upon a clear evidence from his Lord [like the aforementioned]? And a witness1 from Him follows it,2 and before it was the Scripture of Moses to lead and as mercy. Those [believers in the former revelations] believe in it [i.e., the Qur’ān]. But whoever disbelieves in it from the [various] factions - the Fire is his promised destination. So be not in doubt about it. Indeed, it is the truth from your Lord, but most of the people do not believe.

— Saheeh International

وَمَنْ

And who

waman

أَظْلَمُ

(is) more unjust

aẓlamu

مِمَّنِ

than (he) who

mimmani

ٱفْتَرَىٰ

invents

if'tarā

عَلَى

against

ʿalā

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

كَذِبًا ۚ

a lie

kadhiban

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

Those

ulāika

يُعْرَضُونَ

will be presented

yuʿ'raḍūna

عَلَىٰ

before

ʿalā

رَبِّهِمْ

their Lord

rabbihim

وَيَقُولُ

and will say

wayaqūlu

ٱلْأَشْهَـٰدُ

the witnesses

l-ashhādu

هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ

These (are)

hāulāi

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

كَذَبُوا۟

lied

kadhabū

عَلَىٰ

against

ʿalā

رَبِّهِمْ ۚ

their Lord

rabbihim

أَلَا

No doubt

alā

لَعْنَةُ

(The) curse of Allah

laʿnatu

ٱللَّهِ

(The) curse of Allah

l-lahi

عَلَى

(is) on

ʿalā

ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ

the wrongdoers

l-ẓālimīna

١٨

And who is more unjust than he who invents a lie about Allāh? Those will be presented before their Lord, and the witnesses will say, "These are the ones who lied against their Lord." Unquestionably, the curse of Allāh is upon the wrongdoers.

— Saheeh International

ٱلَّذِينَ

Those who

alladhīna

يَصُدُّونَ

hinder

yaṣuddūna

عَن

from

ʿan

سَبِيلِ

(the) way

sabīli

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

وَيَبْغُونَهَا

and seek (in) it

wayabghūnahā

عِوَجًۭا

crookedness

ʿiwajan

وَهُم

while they

wahum

بِٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ

in the Hereafter

bil-ākhirati

هُمْ

[they]

hum

كَـٰفِرُونَ

(are) disbelievers

kāfirūna

١٩

Who averted [people] from the way of Allāh and sought to make it [seem] deviant while they, concerning the Hereafter, were disbelievers.

— Saheeh International

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

Those

ulāika

لَمْ

not

lam

يَكُونُوا۟

will be

yakūnū

مُعْجِزِينَ

(able to) escape

muʿ'jizīna

فِى

in

ٱلْأَرْضِ

the earth

l-arḍi

وَمَا

and not

wamā

كَانَ

is

kāna

لَهُم

for them

lahum

مِّن

besides

min

دُونِ

besides

dūni

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

مِنْ

any

min

أَوْلِيَآءَ ۘ

protectors

awliyāa

يُضَـٰعَفُ

And will be doubled

yuḍāʿafu

لَهُمُ

for them

lahumu

ٱلْعَذَابُ ۚ

the punishment

l-ʿadhābu

مَا

Not

كَانُوا۟

they were

kānū

يَسْتَطِيعُونَ

able

yastaṭīʿūna

ٱلسَّمْعَ

(to) hear

l-samʿa

وَمَا

and not

wamā

كَانُوا۟

they used (to)

kānū

يُبْصِرُونَ

see

yub'ṣirūna

٢٠

Those were not causing failure [to Allāh] on earth, nor did they have besides Allāh any protectors. For them the punishment will be multiplied. They were not able to hear, nor did they see.1

— Saheeh International

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

Those

ulāika

ٱلَّذِينَ

(are) the ones who

alladhīna

خَسِرُوٓا۟

(have) lost

khasirū

أَنفُسَهُمْ

their souls

anfusahum

وَضَلَّ

and lost

waḍalla

عَنْهُم

from them

ʿanhum

مَّا

(is) what

كَانُوا۟

they used

kānū

يَفْتَرُونَ

(to) invent

yaftarūna

٢١

Those are the ones who will have lost themselves, and lost from them is what they used to invent.

— Saheeh International

لَا

No

جَرَمَ

doubt

jarama

أَنَّهُمْ

that they

annahum

فِى

in

ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ

the Hereafter

l-ākhirati

هُمُ

[they]

humu

ٱلْأَخْسَرُونَ

(will be) the greatest losers

l-akhsarūna

٢٢

Assuredly, it is they in the Hereafter who will be the greatest losers.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

ءَامَنُوا۟

believe

āmanū

وَعَمِلُوا۟

and do

waʿamilū

ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ

good deeds

l-ṣāliḥāti

وَأَخْبَتُوٓا۟

and humble themselves

wa-akhbatū

إِلَىٰ

before

ilā

رَبِّهِمْ

their Lord

rabbihim

أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ

those

ulāika

أَصْحَـٰبُ

(are the) companions

aṣḥābu

ٱلْجَنَّةِ ۖ

(of) Paradise

l-janati

هُمْ

they

hum

فِيهَا

in it

fīhā

خَـٰلِدُونَ

(will) abide forever

khālidūna

٢٣

Indeed, they who have believed and done righteous deeds and humbled themselves to their Lord - those are the companions of Paradise; they will abide eternally therein.

— Saheeh International

۞ مَثَلُ

(The) example

mathalu

ٱلْفَرِيقَيْنِ

(of) the two parties

l-farīqayni

كَٱلْأَعْمَىٰ

(is) like the blind

kal-aʿmā

وَٱلْأَصَمِّ

and the deaf

wal-aṣami

وَٱلْبَصِيرِ

and the seer

wal-baṣīri

وَٱلسَّمِيعِ ۚ

and the hearer

wal-samīʿi

هَلْ

Are

hal

يَسْتَوِيَانِ

they equal

yastawiyāni

مَثَلًا ۚ

(in) comparison

mathalan

أَفَلَا

Then, will not

afalā

تَذَكَّرُونَ

you take heed

tadhakkarūna

٢٤

The example of the two parties is like the blind and deaf, and the seeing and hearing. Are they equal in comparison? Then, will you not remember?

— Saheeh International

وَلَقَدْ

And verily

walaqad

أَرْسَلْنَا

We sent

arsalnā

نُوحًا

Nuh

nūḥan

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

قَوْمِهِۦٓ

his people

qawmihi

إِنِّى

Indeed, I am

innī

لَكُمْ

to you

lakum

نَذِيرٌۭ

a warner

nadhīrun

مُّبِينٌ

clear

mubīnun

٢٥

And We had certainly sent Noah to his people, [saying], "Indeed, I am to you a clear warner

— Saheeh International

أَن

That

an

لَّا

(do) not

تَعْبُدُوٓا۟

worship

taʿbudū

إِلَّا

except

illā

ٱللَّهَ ۖ

Allah

l-laha

إِنِّىٓ

Indeed, I

innī

أَخَافُ

[I] fear

akhāfu

عَلَيْكُمْ

for you

ʿalaykum

عَذَابَ

(the) punishment

ʿadhāba

يَوْمٍ

(of) a Day

yawmin

أَلِيمٍۢ

painful

alīmin

٢٦

That you not worship except Allāh. Indeed, I fear for you the punishment of a painful day."

— Saheeh International

فَقَالَ

So said

faqāla

ٱلْمَلَأُ

the chiefs

l-mala-u

ٱلَّذِينَ

(of) those who

alladhīna

كَفَرُوا۟

disbelieved

kafarū

مِن

from

min

قَوْمِهِۦ

his people

qawmihi

مَا

Not

نَرَىٰكَ

we see you

narāka

إِلَّا

but

illā

بَشَرًۭا

a man

basharan

مِّثْلَنَا

like us

mith'lanā

وَمَا

and not

wamā

نَرَىٰكَ

we see you

narāka

ٱتَّبَعَكَ

followed [you]

ittabaʿaka

إِلَّا

except

illā

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

هُمْ

[they]

hum

أَرَاذِلُنَا

(are) the lowest of us

arādhilunā

بَادِىَ

immature in opinion

bādiya

ٱلرَّأْىِ

immature in opinion

l-rayi

وَمَا

And not

wamā

نَرَىٰ

we see

narā

لَكُمْ

in you

lakum

عَلَيْنَا

over us

ʿalaynā

مِن

any

min

فَضْلٍۭ

merit

faḍlin

بَلْ

nay

bal

نَظُنُّكُمْ

we think you

naẓunnukum

كَـٰذِبِينَ

(are) liars

kādhibīna

٢٧

So the eminent among those who disbelieved from his people said, "We do not see you but as a man like ourselves, and we do not see you followed except by those who are the lowest of us [and] at first suggestion.1 And we do not see in you over us any merit; rather, we think you are liars."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

يَـٰقَوْمِ

O my people

yāqawmi

أَرَءَيْتُمْ

Do you see

ara-aytum

إِن

if

in

كُنتُ

I was

kuntu

عَلَىٰ

on

ʿalā

بَيِّنَةٍۢ

(the) clear proof

bayyinatin

مِّن

from

min

رَّبِّى

my Lord

rabbī

وَءَاتَىٰنِى

while He has given me

waātānī

رَحْمَةًۭ

mercy

raḥmatan

مِّنْ

from

min

عِندِهِۦ

Himself

ʿindihi

فَعُمِّيَتْ

but (it) has been obscured

faʿummiyat

عَلَيْكُمْ

from you

ʿalaykum

أَنُلْزِمُكُمُوهَا

should We compel you (to accept) it

anul'zimukumūhā

وَأَنتُمْ

while you (are)

wa-antum

لَهَا

averse to it

lahā

كَـٰرِهُونَ

averse to it

kārihūna

٢٨

He said, "O my people, have you considered: if I should be upon clear evidence from my Lord while He has given me mercy from Himself but it has been made unapparent to you, should we force it upon you while you are averse to it?

— Saheeh International

وَيَـٰقَوْمِ

And O my people

wayāqawmi

لَآ

not

أَسْـَٔلُكُمْ

I ask (of) you

asalukum

عَلَيْهِ

for it

ʿalayhi

مَالًا ۖ

any wealth

mālan

إِنْ

Not

in

أَجْرِىَ

(is) my reward

ajriya

إِلَّا

except

illā

عَلَى

from

ʿalā

ٱللَّهِ ۚ

Allah

l-lahi

وَمَآ

And not

wamā

أَنَا۠

I am

anā

بِطَارِدِ

going to drive away

biṭāridi

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

ءَامَنُوٓا۟ ۚ

believed

āmanū

إِنَّهُم

Indeed, they

innahum

مُّلَـٰقُوا۟

(will) be meeting

mulāqū

رَبِّهِمْ

their Lord

rabbihim

وَلَـٰكِنِّىٓ

but I

walākinnī

أَرَىٰكُمْ

see you

arākum

قَوْمًۭا

(are) a people

qawman

تَجْهَلُونَ

ignorant

tajhalūna

٢٩

And O my people, I ask not of you for it any wealth. My reward is not but from Allāh. And I am not one to drive away those who have believed. Indeed, they will meet their Lord, but I see that you are a people behaving ignorantly.

— Saheeh International

وَيَـٰقَوْمِ

And O my people

wayāqawmi

مَن

Who

man

يَنصُرُنِى

would help me

yanṣurunī

مِنَ

against

mina

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

إِن

if

in

طَرَدتُّهُمْ ۚ

I drove them away

ṭaradttuhum

أَفَلَا

Then, will not

afalā

تَذَكَّرُونَ

you take heed

tadhakkarūna

٣٠

And O my people, who would protect me from Allāh if I drove them away? Then will you not be reminded?

— Saheeh International

وَلَآ

And not

walā

أَقُولُ

I say

aqūlu

لَكُمْ

to you

lakum

عِندِى

(that) with me

ʿindī

خَزَآئِنُ

(are the) treasures

khazāinu

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

وَلَآ

and not

walā

أَعْلَمُ

I know

aʿlamu

ٱلْغَيْبَ

the unseen

l-ghayba

وَلَآ

and not

walā

أَقُولُ

I say

aqūlu

إِنِّى

that I am

innī

مَلَكٌۭ

an Angel

malakun

وَلَآ

and not

walā

أَقُولُ

I say

aqūlu

لِلَّذِينَ

for those whom

lilladhīna

تَزْدَرِىٓ

look down upon

tazdarī

أَعْيُنُكُمْ

your eyes

aʿyunukum

لَن

never

lan

يُؤْتِيَهُمُ

will Allah give them

yu'tiyahumu

ٱللَّهُ

will Allah give them

l-lahu

خَيْرًا ۖ

any good

khayran

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

أَعْلَمُ

knows best

aʿlamu

بِمَا

what

bimā

فِىٓ

(is) in

أَنفُسِهِمْ ۖ

their souls

anfusihim

إِنِّىٓ

Indeed, I

innī

إِذًۭا

then

idhan

لَّمِنَ

(will be) surely of

lamina

ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ

the wrongdoers

l-ẓālimīna

٣١

And I do not tell you that I have the depositories [containing the provision] of Allāh or that I know the unseen, nor do I tell you that I am an angel, nor do I say of those upon whom your eyes look down that Allāh will never grant them any good. Allāh is most knowing of what is within their souls. Indeed, I would then be among the wrongdoers [i.e., the unjust]."

— Saheeh International

قَالُوا۟

They said

qālū

يَـٰنُوحُ

O Nuh

yānūḥu

قَدْ

Indeed

qad

جَـٰدَلْتَنَا

you disputed with us

jādaltanā

فَأَكْثَرْتَ

and you (have been) frequent

fa-aktharta

جِدَٰلَنَا

(in) dispute with us

jidālanā

فَأْتِنَا

So bring us

fatinā

بِمَا

what

bimā

تَعِدُنَآ

you threaten us (with)

taʿidunā

إِن

if

in

كُنتَ

you are

kunta

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَ

the truthful

l-ṣādiqīna

٣٢

They said, "O Noah, you have disputed [i.e., opposed] us and been frequent in dispute of us. So bring us what you threaten us, if you should be of the truthful."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

إِنَّمَا

Only

innamā

يَأْتِيكُم

will bring it (on) you

yatīkum

بِهِ

will bring it (on) you

bihi

ٱللَّهُ

Allah

l-lahu

إِن

if

in

شَآءَ

He wills

shāa

وَمَآ

and not

wamā

أَنتُم

you (are)

antum

بِمُعْجِزِينَ

one who (can) escape (it)

bimuʿ'jizīna

٣٣

He said, "Allāh will only bring it to you if He wills, and you will not cause [Him] failure.

— Saheeh International

وَلَا

And (will) not

walā

يَنفَعُكُمْ

benefit you

yanfaʿukum

نُصْحِىٓ

my advice

nuṣ'ḥī

إِنْ

(even) if

in

أَرَدتُّ

I wish

aradttu

أَنْ

to

an

أَنصَحَ

[I] advise

anṣaḥa

لَكُمْ

[to] you

lakum

إِن

if

in

كَانَ

it was Allah's

kāna

ٱللَّهُ

it was Allah's

l-lahu

يُرِيدُ

will

yurīdu

أَن

to

an

يُغْوِيَكُمْ ۚ

let you go astray

yugh'wiyakum

هُوَ

He (is)

huwa

رَبُّكُمْ

your Lord

rabbukum

وَإِلَيْهِ

and to Him

wa-ilayhi

تُرْجَعُونَ

you will be returned

tur'jaʿūna

٣٤

And my advice will not benefit you - although I wished to advise you - if Allāh should intend to put you in error. He is your Lord, and to Him you will be returned."

— Saheeh International

أَمْ

Or

am

يَقُولُونَ

(do) they say

yaqūlūna

ٱفْتَرَىٰهُ ۖ

He has invented it

if'tarāhu

قُلْ

Say

qul

إِنِ

If

ini

ٱفْتَرَيْتُهُۥ

I have invented it

if'taraytuhu

فَعَلَىَّ

then on me

faʿalayya

إِجْرَامِى

(is) my crime

ij'rāmī

وَأَنَا۠

but I am

wa-anā

بَرِىٓءٌۭ

innocent

barīon

مِّمَّا

of what

mimmā

تُجْرِمُونَ

crimes you commit

tuj'rimūna

٣٥

Or do they say [about Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ)], "He invented it"? Say, "If I have invented it, then upon me is [the consequence of] my crime; but I am innocent of what [crimes] you commit."

— Saheeh International

وَأُوحِىَ

And it was revealed

waūḥiya

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

نُوحٍ

Nuh

nūḥin

أَنَّهُۥ

That

annahu

لَن

will never

lan

يُؤْمِنَ

believe

yu'mina

مِن

from

min

قَوْمِكَ

your people

qawmika

إِلَّا

except

illā

مَن

(those) who

man

قَدْ

have already

qad

ءَامَنَ

believed

āmana

فَلَا

So (do) not

falā

تَبْتَئِسْ

(be) distressed

tabta-is

بِمَا

by what

bimā

كَانُوا۟

they have been

kānū

يَفْعَلُونَ

doing

yafʿalūna

٣٦

And it was revealed to Noah that, "No one will believe from your people except those who have already believed, so do not be distressed by what they have been doing.

— Saheeh International

وَٱصْنَعِ

And construct

wa-iṣ'naʿi

ٱلْفُلْكَ

the ship

l-ful'ka

بِأَعْيُنِنَا

under Our Eyes

bi-aʿyuninā

وَوَحْيِنَا

and Our inspiration

wawaḥyinā

وَلَا

and (do) not

walā

تُخَـٰطِبْنِى

address Me

tukhāṭib'nī

فِى

concerning

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

ظَلَمُوٓا۟ ۚ

wronged

ẓalamū

إِنَّهُم

indeed, they (are)

innahum

مُّغْرَقُونَ

the ones (to be) drowned

mugh'raqūna

٣٧

And construct the ship under Our observation and Our inspiration and do not address Me concerning those who have wronged; indeed, they are [to be] drowned."

— Saheeh International

وَيَصْنَعُ

And he was constructing

wayaṣnaʿu

ٱلْفُلْكَ

the ship

l-ful'ka

وَكُلَّمَا

and every time

wakullamā

مَرَّ

passed

marra

عَلَيْهِ

by him

ʿalayhi

مَلَأٌۭ

(the) chiefs

mala-on

مِّن

of

min

قَوْمِهِۦ

his people

qawmihi

سَخِرُوا۟

they ridiculed

sakhirū

مِنْهُ ۚ

[of] him

min'hu

قَالَ

He said

qāla

إِن

If

in

تَسْخَرُوا۟

you ridicule

taskharū

مِنَّا

us

minnā

فَإِنَّا

then we

fa-innā

نَسْخَرُ

can ridicule

naskharu

مِنكُمْ

you

minkum

كَمَا

as

kamā

تَسْخَرُونَ

you ridicule

taskharūna

٣٨

And he constructed the ship, and whenever an assembly of the eminent of his people passed by him, they ridiculed him. He said, "If you ridicule us, then we will ridicule you just as you ridicule.

— Saheeh International

فَسَوْفَ

And soon

fasawfa

تَعْلَمُونَ

you will know

taʿlamūna

مَن

(on) whom

man

يَأْتِيهِ

will come

yatīhi

عَذَابٌۭ

a punishment

ʿadhābun

يُخْزِيهِ

(that) will disgrace him

yukh'zīhi

وَيَحِلُّ

and will descend

wayaḥillu

عَلَيْهِ

on him

ʿalayhi

عَذَابٌۭ

a punishment

ʿadhābun

مُّقِيمٌ

lasting

muqīmun

٣٩

And you are going to know who will get a punishment that will disgrace him [on earth] and upon whom will descend an enduring punishment [in the Hereafter]."

— Saheeh International

حَتَّىٰٓ

Till

ḥattā

إِذَا

when

idhā

جَآءَ

came

jāa

أَمْرُنَا

Our command

amrunā

وَفَارَ

and overflowed

wafāra

ٱلتَّنُّورُ

the oven

l-tanūru

قُلْنَا

We said

qul'nā

ٱحْمِلْ

Load

iḥ'mil

فِيهَا

in it

fīhā

مِن

of

min

كُلٍّۢ

every kind

kullin

زَوْجَيْنِ

a pair

zawjayni

ٱثْنَيْنِ

two

ith'nayni

وَأَهْلَكَ

and your family

wa-ahlaka

إِلَّا

except

illā

مَن

who

man

سَبَقَ

has preceded

sabaqa

عَلَيْهِ

against him

ʿalayhi

ٱلْقَوْلُ

the word

l-qawlu

وَمَنْ

and whoever

waman

ءَامَنَ ۚ

believed

āmana

وَمَآ

And not

wamā

ءَامَنَ

believed

āmana

مَعَهُۥٓ

with him

maʿahu

إِلَّا

except

illā

قَلِيلٌۭ

a few

qalīlun

٤٠

[So it was], until when Our command came and the oven overflowed,1 We said, "Load upon it [i.e., the ship] of each [creature] two mates and your family, except those about whom the word [i.e., decree] has preceded, and [include] whoever has believed." But none had believed with him, except a few.

— Saheeh International

۞ وَقَالَ

And he said

waqāla

ٱرْكَبُوا۟

Embark

ir'kabū

فِيهَا

in it

fīhā

بِسْمِ

in the name

bis'mi

ٱللَّهِ

of Allah

l-lahi

مَجْر۪ىٰهَا

(is) its course

majrahā

وَمُرْسَىٰهَآ ۚ

and its anchorage

wamur'sāhā

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

رَبِّى

my Lord

rabbī

لَغَفُورٌۭ

(is) certainly Oft-Forgiving

laghafūrun

رَّحِيمٌۭ

Most Merciful

raḥīmun

٤١

And [Noah] said, "Embark therein; in the name of Allāh [are] its course and its anchorage. Indeed, my Lord is Forgiving and Merciful."

— Saheeh International

وَهِىَ

And it

wahiya

تَجْرِى

sailed

tajrī

بِهِمْ

with them

bihim

فِى

on

مَوْجٍۢ

the waves

mawjin

كَٱلْجِبَالِ

like mountains

kal-jibāli

وَنَادَىٰ

and Nuh called out

wanādā

نُوحٌ

and Nuh called out

nūḥun

ٱبْنَهُۥ

(to) his son

ib'nahu

وَكَانَ

and he was

wakāna

فِى

[in]

مَعْزِلٍۢ

apart

maʿzilin

يَـٰبُنَىَّ

O my son

yābunayya

ٱرْكَب

Embark

ir'kab

مَّعَنَا

with us

maʿanā

وَلَا

and (do) not

walā

تَكُن

be

takun

مَّعَ

with

maʿa

ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ

the disbelievers

l-kāfirīna

٤٢

And it sailed with them through waves like mountains, and Noah called to his son who was apart [from them], "O my son, come aboard with us and be not with the disbelievers."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

سَـَٔاوِىٓ

I will betake myself

saāwī

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

جَبَلٍۢ

a mountain

jabalin

يَعْصِمُنِى

(that) will save me

yaʿṣimunī

مِنَ

from

mina

ٱلْمَآءِ ۚ

the water

l-māi

قَالَ

He said

qāla

لَا

(There is) no

عَاصِمَ

protector

ʿāṣima

ٱلْيَوْمَ

today

l-yawma

مِنْ

from

min

أَمْرِ

the Command of Allah

amri

ٱللَّهِ

the Command of Allah

l-lahi

إِلَّا

except

illā

مَن

(on) whom

man

رَّحِمَ ۚ

He has mercy

raḥima

وَحَالَ

And came

waḥāla

بَيْنَهُمَا

(in) between them

baynahumā

ٱلْمَوْجُ

the waves

l-mawju

فَكَانَ

so he was

fakāna

مِنَ

among

mina

ٱلْمُغْرَقِينَ

the drowned

l-mugh'raqīna

٤٣

[But] he said, "I will take refuge on a mountain to protect me from the water." [Noah] said, "There is no protector today from the decree of Allāh, except for whom He gives mercy." And the waves came between them, and he was among the drowned.

— Saheeh International

وَقِيلَ

And it was said

waqīla

يَـٰٓأَرْضُ

O earth

yāarḍu

ٱبْلَعِى

Swallow

ib'laʿī

مَآءَكِ

your water

māaki

وَيَـٰسَمَآءُ

and O sky

wayāsamāu

أَقْلِعِى

Withhold

aqliʿī

وَغِيضَ

And subsided

waghīḍa

ٱلْمَآءُ

the water

l-māu

وَقُضِىَ

and was fulfilled

waquḍiya

ٱلْأَمْرُ

the Command

l-amru

وَٱسْتَوَتْ

And it rested

wa-is'tawat

عَلَى

on

ʿalā

ٱلْجُودِىِّ ۖ

the Judi

l-jūdiyi

وَقِيلَ

And it was said

waqīla

بُعْدًۭا

Away

buʿ'dan

لِّلْقَوْمِ

with the people

lil'qawmi

ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ

the wrongdoers

l-ẓālimīna

٤٤

And it was said, "O earth, swallow your water, and O sky, withhold [your rain]." And the water subsided, and the matter was accomplished, and it [i.e., the ship] came to rest on the [mountain of] Jūdiyy. And it was said, "Away with the wrongdoing people."

— Saheeh International

وَنَادَىٰ

And Nuh called

wanādā

نُوحٌۭ

And Nuh called

nūḥun

رَّبَّهُۥ

(to) his Lord

rabbahu

فَقَالَ

and said

faqāla

رَبِّ

O my Lord

rabbi

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱبْنِى

my son

ib'nī

مِنْ

(is) of

min

أَهْلِى

my family

ahlī

وَإِنَّ

and indeed

wa-inna

وَعْدَكَ

Your promise

waʿdaka

ٱلْحَقُّ

(is) true

l-ḥaqu

وَأَنتَ

and You

wa-anta

أَحْكَمُ

(are) the Most Just

aḥkamu

ٱلْحَـٰكِمِينَ

(of) the judges

l-ḥākimīna

٤٥

And Noah called to his Lord and said, "My Lord, indeed my son is of my family; and indeed, Your promise is true; and You are the most just of judges!"

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

يَـٰنُوحُ

O Nuh

yānūḥu

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed, he

innahu

لَيْسَ

(is) not

laysa

مِنْ

of

min

أَهْلِكَ ۖ

your family

ahlika

إِنَّهُۥ

indeed, [he]

innahu

عَمَلٌ

(his) deed

ʿamalun

غَيْرُ

(is) other than

ghayru

صَـٰلِحٍۢ ۖ

righteous

ṣāliḥin

فَلَا

so (do) not

falā

تَسْـَٔلْنِ

ask Me

tasalni

مَا

(about) what

لَيْسَ

not

laysa

لَكَ

you have

laka

بِهِۦ

of it

bihi

عِلْمٌ ۖ

any knowledge

ʿil'mun

إِنِّىٓ

Indeed, I

innī

أَعِظُكَ

admonish you

aʿiẓuka

أَن

lest

an

تَكُونَ

you be

takūna

مِنَ

among

mina

ٱلْجَـٰهِلِينَ

the ignorant

l-jāhilīna

٤٦

He said, "O Noah, indeed he is not of your family; indeed, he is [one whose] work was other than righteous, so ask Me not for that about which you have no knowledge. Indeed, I advise you, lest you be among the ignorant."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

رَبِّ

O my Lord

rabbi

إِنِّىٓ

Indeed, I

innī

أَعُوذُ

seek refuge

aʿūdhu

بِكَ

in You

bika

أَنْ

that

an

أَسْـَٔلَكَ

I (should) ask You

asalaka

مَا

what

لَيْسَ

not

laysa

لِى

I have

بِهِۦ

of it

bihi

عِلْمٌۭ ۖ

knowledge

ʿil'mun

وَإِلَّا

And unless

wa-illā

تَغْفِرْ

You forgive

taghfir

لِى

me

وَتَرْحَمْنِىٓ

and You have mercy on me

watarḥamnī

أَكُن

I will be

akun

مِّنَ

among

mina

ٱلْخَـٰسِرِينَ

the losers

l-khāsirīna

٤٧

[Noah] said, "My Lord, I seek refuge in You from asking that of which I have no knowledge. And unless You forgive me and have mercy upon me, I will be among the losers."

— Saheeh International

قِيلَ

It was said

qīla

يَـٰنُوحُ

O Nuh

yānūḥu

ٱهْبِطْ

Go down

ih'biṭ

بِسَلَـٰمٍۢ

with peace

bisalāmin

مِّنَّا

from Us

minnā

وَبَرَكَـٰتٍ

and blessings

wabarakātin

عَلَيْكَ

on you

ʿalayka

وَعَلَىٰٓ

and on

waʿalā

أُمَمٍۢ

the nations

umamin

مِّمَّن

from those

mimman

مَّعَكَ ۚ

with you

maʿaka

وَأُمَمٌۭ

But (to other) nations

wa-umamun

سَنُمَتِّعُهُمْ

We will grant enjoyment

sanumattiʿuhum

ثُمَّ

then

thumma

يَمَسُّهُم

will touch them

yamassuhum

مِّنَّا

from Us

minnā

عَذَابٌ

a punishment

ʿadhābun

أَلِيمٌۭ

painful

alīmun

٤٨

It was said, "O Noah, disembark in security from Us and blessings upon you and upon nations [descending] from those with you. But other nations [of them] We will grant enjoyment; then there will touch them from Us a painful punishment."

— Saheeh International

تِلْكَ

This

til'ka

مِنْ

(is) from

min

أَنۢبَآءِ

the news

anbāi

ٱلْغَيْبِ

(of) the unseen

l-ghaybi

نُوحِيهَآ

(which) We reveal

nūḥīhā

إِلَيْكَ ۖ

to you

ilayka

مَا

Not

كُنتَ

you were

kunta

تَعْلَمُهَآ

knowing it

taʿlamuhā

أَنتَ

you

anta

وَلَا

and not

walā

قَوْمُكَ

your people

qawmuka

مِن

from

min

قَبْلِ

before

qabli

هَـٰذَا ۖ

this

hādhā

فَٱصْبِرْ ۖ

So be patient

fa-iṣ'bir

إِنَّ

indeed

inna

ٱلْعَـٰقِبَةَ

the end

l-ʿāqibata

لِلْمُتَّقِينَ

(is) for the God fearing

lil'muttaqīna

٤٩

That is from the news of the unseen which We reveal to you, [O Muḥammad]. You knew it not, neither you nor your people, before this. So be patient; indeed, the [best] outcome is for the righteous.

— Saheeh International

وَإِلَىٰ

And to

wa-ilā

عَادٍ

Aad

ʿādin

أَخَاهُمْ

(We sent) their brother

akhāhum

هُودًۭا ۚ

Hud

hūdan

قَالَ

He said

qāla

يَـٰقَوْمِ

O my people

yāqawmi

ٱعْبُدُوا۟

Worship

uʿ'budū

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

مَا

not

لَكُم

(is) for you

lakum

مِّنْ

any

min

إِلَـٰهٍ

god

ilāhin

غَيْرُهُۥٓ ۖ

other than Him

ghayruhu

إِنْ

Not

in

أَنتُمْ

you

antum

إِلَّا

(are) but

illā

مُفْتَرُونَ

inventors

muf'tarūna

٥٠

And to ʿAad [We sent] their brother Hūd. He said, "O my people, worship Allāh; you have no deity other than Him. You are not but inventors [of falsehood].

— Saheeh International

يَـٰقَوْمِ

O my people

yāqawmi

لَآ

Not

أَسْـَٔلُكُمْ

I ask you

asalukum

عَلَيْهِ

for it

ʿalayhi

أَجْرًا ۖ

any reward

ajran

إِنْ

Not

in

أَجْرِىَ

(is) my reward

ajriya

إِلَّا

except

illā

عَلَى

from

ʿalā

ٱلَّذِى

the One Who

alladhī

فَطَرَنِىٓ ۚ

created me

faṭaranī

أَفَلَا

Then will not

afalā

تَعْقِلُونَ

you use reason

taʿqilūna

٥١

O my people, I do not ask you for it [i.e., my advice] any reward. My reward is only from the one who created me. Then will you not reason?

— Saheeh International

وَيَـٰقَوْمِ

And O my people

wayāqawmi

ٱسْتَغْفِرُوا۟

Ask forgiveness

is'taghfirū

رَبَّكُمْ

(of) your Lord

rabbakum

ثُمَّ

then

thumma

تُوبُوٓا۟

turn in repentance

tūbū

إِلَيْهِ

to Him

ilayhi

يُرْسِلِ

He will send

yur'sili

ٱلسَّمَآءَ

(from) the sky (rain)

l-samāa

عَلَيْكُم

upon you

ʿalaykum

مِّدْرَارًۭا

(in) abundance

mid'rāran

وَيَزِدْكُمْ

and increase you

wayazid'kum

قُوَّةً

(in) strength

quwwatan

إِلَىٰ

(added) to

ilā

قُوَّتِكُمْ

your strength

quwwatikum

وَلَا

And (do) not

walā

تَتَوَلَّوْا۟

turn away

tatawallaw

مُجْرِمِينَ

(as) criminals

muj'rimīna

٥٢

And O my people, ask forgiveness of your Lord and then repent to Him. He will send [rain from] the sky upon you in showers and increase you in strength [added] to your strength. And do not turn away, [being] criminals."

— Saheeh International

قَالُوا۟

They said

qālū

يَـٰهُودُ

O Hud

yāhūdu

مَا

You have not brought us

جِئْتَنَا

You have not brought us

ji'tanā

بِبَيِّنَةٍۢ

clear proofs

bibayyinatin

وَمَا

and not

wamā

نَحْنُ

we

naḥnu

بِتَارِكِىٓ

(will) leave

bitārikī

ءَالِهَتِنَا

our gods

ālihatinā

عَن

on

ʿan

قَوْلِكَ

your saying

qawlika

وَمَا

and not

wamā

نَحْنُ

we (are)

naḥnu

لَكَ

in you

laka

بِمُؤْمِنِينَ

believers

bimu'minīna

٥٣

They said, "O Hūd, you have not brought us clear evidence, and we are not ones to leave our gods on your say-so. Nor are we believers in you.

— Saheeh International

إِن

Not

in

نَّقُولُ

we say

naqūlu

إِلَّا

except (that)

illā

ٱعْتَرَىٰكَ

have seized you

iʿ'tarāka

بَعْضُ

some

baʿḍu

ءَالِهَتِنَا

(of) our gods

ālihatinā

بِسُوٓءٍۢ ۗ

with evil

bisūin

قَالَ

He said

qāla

إِنِّىٓ

Indeed, I

innī

أُشْهِدُ

[I] call Allah to witness

ush'hidu

ٱللَّهَ

[I] call Allah to witness

l-laha

وَٱشْهَدُوٓا۟

and (you) bear witness

wa-ish'hadū

أَنِّى

that I am

annī

بَرِىٓءٌۭ

innocent

barīon

مِّمَّا

of what

mimmā

تُشْرِكُونَ

you associate

tush'rikūna

٥٤

We only say that some of our gods have possessed you with evil [i.e., insanity]." He said, "Indeed, I call Allāh to witness, and witness [yourselves] that I am free from whatever you associate with Allāh

— Saheeh International

مِن

Other than Him

min

دُونِهِۦ ۖ

Other than Him

dūnihi

فَكِيدُونِى

So plot against me

fakīdūnī

جَمِيعًۭا

all together

jamīʿan

ثُمَّ

then

thumma

لَا

(do) not

تُنظِرُونِ

give me respite

tunẓirūni

٥٥

Other than Him. So plot against me all together; then do not give me respite.

— Saheeh International

إِنِّى

Indeed, I

innī

تَوَكَّلْتُ

[I] put my trust

tawakkaltu

عَلَى

upon

ʿalā

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

رَبِّى

my Lord

rabbī

وَرَبِّكُم ۚ

and your Lord

warabbikum

مَّا

(There is) not

مِن

of a moving creature

min

دَآبَّةٍ

of a moving creature

dābbatin

إِلَّا

but

illā

هُوَ

He

huwa

ءَاخِذٌۢ

has grasp

ākhidhun

بِنَاصِيَتِهَآ ۚ

of its forelock

bināṣiyatihā

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

رَبِّى

my Lord

rabbī

عَلَىٰ

(is) on

ʿalā

صِرَٰطٍۢ

a path

ṣirāṭin

مُّسْتَقِيمٍۢ

straight

mus'taqīmin

٥٦

Indeed, I have relied upon Allāh, my Lord and your Lord. There is no creature but that He holds it by its forelock [i.e., controls it]. Indeed, my Lord is on a path [that is] straight.

— Saheeh International

فَإِن

So if

fa-in

تَوَلَّوْا۟

you turn away

tawallaw

فَقَدْ

then verily

faqad

أَبْلَغْتُكُم

I have conveyed to you

ablaghtukum

مَّآ

what

أُرْسِلْتُ

I was sent

ur'sil'tu

بِهِۦٓ

with [it]

bihi

إِلَيْكُمْ ۚ

to you

ilaykum

وَيَسْتَخْلِفُ

And my Lord will give succession

wayastakhlifu

رَبِّى

And my Lord will give succession

rabbī

قَوْمًا

(to) a people

qawman

غَيْرَكُمْ

other than you

ghayrakum

وَلَا

and not

walā

تَضُرُّونَهُۥ

you will harm Him

taḍurrūnahu

شَيْـًٔا ۚ

(in) anything

shayan

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

رَبِّى

my Lord

rabbī

عَلَىٰ

(is) on

ʿalā

كُلِّ

all

kulli

شَىْءٍ

things

shayin

حَفِيظٌۭ

a Guardian

ḥafīẓun

٥٧

But if you turn away, then I have already conveyed that with which I was sent to you. My Lord will give succession to a people other than you, and you will not harm Him at all. Indeed my Lord is, over all things, Guardian."1

— Saheeh International

وَلَمَّا

And when

walammā

جَآءَ

came

jāa

أَمْرُنَا

Our command

amrunā

نَجَّيْنَا

We saved

najjaynā

هُودًۭا

Hud

hūdan

وَٱلَّذِينَ

and those who

wa-alladhīna

ءَامَنُوا۟

believed

āmanū

مَعَهُۥ

with him

maʿahu

بِرَحْمَةٍۢ

by a Mercy

biraḥmatin

مِّنَّا

from Us

minnā

وَنَجَّيْنَـٰهُم

and We saved them

wanajjaynāhum

مِّنْ

from

min

عَذَابٍ

a punishment

ʿadhābin

غَلِيظٍۢ

severe

ghalīẓin

٥٨

And when Our command came, We saved Hūd and those who believed with him, by mercy from Us; and We saved them from a harsh punishment.

— Saheeh International

وَتِلْكَ

And this

watil'ka

عَادٌۭ ۖ

(was) Aad

ʿādun

جَحَدُوا۟

they rejected

jaḥadū

بِـَٔايَـٰتِ

(the) Signs

biāyāti

رَبِّهِمْ

(of) their Lord

rabbihim

وَعَصَوْا۟

and disobeyed

waʿaṣaw

رُسُلَهُۥ

His Messengers

rusulahu

وَٱتَّبَعُوٓا۟

and followed

wa-ittabaʿū

أَمْرَ

(the) command

amra

كُلِّ

(of) every

kulli

جَبَّارٍ

tyrant

jabbārin

عَنِيدٍۢ

obstinate

ʿanīdin

٥٩

And that was ʿAad, who rejected the signs of their Lord and disobeyed His messengers and followed the order of every obstinate tyrant.

— Saheeh International

وَأُتْبِعُوا۟

And they were followed

wa-ut'biʿū

فِى

in

هَـٰذِهِ

this

hādhihi

ٱلدُّنْيَا

world

l-dun'yā

لَعْنَةًۭ

(with) a curse

laʿnatan

وَيَوْمَ

and (on the) Day

wayawma

ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ ۗ

(of) the Resurrection

l-qiyāmati

أَلَآ

No doubt

alā

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

عَادًۭا

Aad

ʿādan

كَفَرُوا۟

disbelieved

kafarū

رَبَّهُمْ ۗ

their Lord

rabbahum

أَلَا

So

alā

بُعْدًۭا

away

buʿ'dan

لِّعَادٍۢ

with Aad

liʿādin

قَوْمِ

(the) people

qawmi

هُودٍۢ

(of) Hud

hūdin

٦٠

And they were [therefore] followed in this world with a curse and [as well] on the Day of Resurrection. Unquestionably, ʿAad denied their Lord; then away with ʿAad, the people of Hūd.

— Saheeh International

۞ وَإِلَىٰ

And to

wa-ilā

ثَمُودَ

Thamud

thamūda

أَخَاهُمْ

(We sent) their brother

akhāhum

صَـٰلِحًۭا ۚ

Salih

ṣāliḥan

قَالَ

He said

qāla

يَـٰقَوْمِ

O my people

yāqawmi

ٱعْبُدُوا۟

Worship

uʿ'budū

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

مَا

not

لَكُم

you have

lakum

مِّنْ

any

min

إِلَـٰهٍ

god

ilāhin

غَيْرُهُۥ ۖ

other than Him

ghayruhu

هُوَ

He

huwa

أَنشَأَكُم

produced you

ansha-akum

مِّنَ

from

mina

ٱلْأَرْضِ

the earth

l-arḍi

وَٱسْتَعْمَرَكُمْ

and settled you

wa-is'taʿmarakum

فِيهَا

in it

fīhā

فَٱسْتَغْفِرُوهُ

So ask forgiveness of Him

fa-is'taghfirūhu

ثُمَّ

then

thumma

تُوبُوٓا۟

turn in repentance

tūbū

إِلَيْهِ ۚ

to Him

ilayhi

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

رَبِّى

my Lord

rabbī

قَرِيبٌۭ

(is) near

qarībun

مُّجِيبٌۭ

All-Responsive

mujībun

٦١

And to Thamūd [We sent] their brother Ṣāliḥ. He said, "O my people, worship Allāh; you have no deity other than Him. He has produced you from the earth and settled you in it, so ask forgiveness of Him and then repent to Him. Indeed, my Lord is near and responsive."

— Saheeh International

قَالُوا۟

They said

qālū

يَـٰصَـٰلِحُ

O Salih

yāṣāliḥu

قَدْ

Verily

qad

كُنتَ

you were

kunta

فِينَا

among us

fīnā

مَرْجُوًّۭا

the one in whom hope was placed

marjuwwan

قَبْلَ

before

qabla

هَـٰذَآ ۖ

this

hādhā

أَتَنْهَىٰنَآ

Do you forbid us

atanhānā

أَن

that

an

نَّعْبُدَ

we worship

naʿbuda

مَا

what

يَعْبُدُ

our forefathers worshipped

yaʿbudu

ءَابَآؤُنَا

our forefathers worshipped

ābāunā

وَإِنَّنَا

And indeed we

wa-innanā

لَفِى

surely (are) in

lafī

شَكٍّۢ

doubt

shakkin

مِّمَّا

about what

mimmā

تَدْعُونَآ

you call us

tadʿūnā

إِلَيْهِ

to it

ilayhi

مُرِيبٍۢ

suspicious

murībin

٦٢

They said, "O Ṣāliḥ, you were among us a man of promise before this. Do you forbid us to worship what our fathers worshipped? And indeed we are, about that to which you invite us, in disquieting doubt."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

يَـٰقَوْمِ

O my people

yāqawmi

أَرَءَيْتُمْ

Do you see

ara-aytum

إِن

if

in

كُنتُ

I am

kuntu

عَلَىٰ

on

ʿalā

بَيِّنَةٍۢ

a clear proof

bayyinatin

مِّن

from

min

رَّبِّى

my Lord

rabbī

وَءَاتَىٰنِى

and He has given me

waātānī

مِنْهُ

from Him

min'hu

رَحْمَةًۭ

a Mercy

raḥmatan

فَمَن

then who

faman

يَنصُرُنِى

(can) help me

yanṣurunī

مِنَ

against

mina

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

إِنْ

if

in

عَصَيْتُهُۥ ۖ

I (were to) disobey Him

ʿaṣaytuhu

فَمَا

So not

famā

تَزِيدُونَنِى

you would increase me

tazīdūnanī

غَيْرَ

but

ghayra

تَخْسِيرٍۢ

(in) loss

takhsīrin

٦٣

He said, "O my people, have you considered: if I should be upon clear evidence from my Lord and He has given me mercy from Himself, who would protect me from Allāh if I disobeyed Him? So you would not increase me except in loss.

— Saheeh International

وَيَـٰقَوْمِ

And O my people

wayāqawmi

هَـٰذِهِۦ

This

hādhihi

نَاقَةُ

she-camel

nāqatu

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

لَكُمْ

(is) for you

lakum

ءَايَةًۭ

a Sign

āyatan

فَذَرُوهَا

so leave her

fadharūhā

تَأْكُلْ

to eat

takul

فِىٓ

in

أَرْضِ

the earth

arḍi

ٱللَّهِ

(of) Allah

l-lahi

وَلَا

and (do) not

walā

تَمَسُّوهَا

touch her

tamassūhā

بِسُوٓءٍۢ

with harm

bisūin

فَيَأْخُذَكُمْ

lest will seize you

fayakhudhakum

عَذَابٌۭ

a punishment

ʿadhābun

قَرِيبٌۭ

impending

qarībun

٦٤

And O my people, this is the she-camel of Allāh - [she is] to you a sign. So let her feed upon Allāh's earth and do not touch her with harm, or you will be taken by an impending punishment."

— Saheeh International

فَعَقَرُوهَا

But they hamstrung her

faʿaqarūhā

فَقَالَ

So he said

faqāla

تَمَتَّعُوا۟

Enjoy (yourselves)

tamattaʿū

فِى

in

دَارِكُمْ

your home(s)

dārikum

ثَلَـٰثَةَ

(for) three

thalāthata

أَيَّامٍۢ ۖ

days

ayyāmin

ذَٰلِكَ

That

dhālika

وَعْدٌ

(is) a promise

waʿdun

غَيْرُ

not

ghayru

مَكْذُوبٍۢ

(to) be belied

makdhūbin

٦٥

But they hamstrung her, so he said, "Enjoy yourselves in your homes for three days. That is a promise not to be denied [i.e., unfailing]."

— Saheeh International

فَلَمَّا

So when

falammā

جَآءَ

came

jāa

أَمْرُنَا

Our command

amrunā

نَجَّيْنَا

We saved

najjaynā

صَـٰلِحًۭا

Salih

ṣāliḥan

وَٱلَّذِينَ

and those who

wa-alladhīna

ءَامَنُوا۟

believed

āmanū

مَعَهُۥ

with him

maʿahu

بِرَحْمَةٍۢ

by a Mercy

biraḥmatin

مِّنَّا

from Us

minnā

وَمِنْ

and from

wamin

خِزْىِ

(the) disgrace

khiz'yi

يَوْمِئِذٍ ۗ

(of) that Day

yawmi-idhin

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

رَبَّكَ

your Lord

rabbaka

هُوَ

He

huwa

ٱلْقَوِىُّ

(is) All-Strong

l-qawiyu

ٱلْعَزِيزُ

All-Mighty

l-ʿazīzu

٦٦

So when Our command came, We saved Ṣāliḥ and those who believed with him, by mercy from Us, and [saved them] from the disgrace of that day.1 Indeed, it is your Lord who is the Powerful, the Exalted in Might.

— Saheeh International

وَأَخَذَ

And seized

wa-akhadha

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

ظَلَمُوا۟

wronged

ẓalamū

ٱلصَّيْحَةُ

the thunderous blast

l-ṣayḥatu

فَأَصْبَحُوا۟

then they became

fa-aṣbaḥū

فِى

in

دِيَـٰرِهِمْ

their homes

diyārihim

جَـٰثِمِينَ

fallen prone

jāthimīna

٦٧

And the shriek1 seized those who had wronged, and they became within their homes [corpses] fallen prone

— Saheeh International

كَأَن

As if

ka-an

لَّمْ

not

lam

يَغْنَوْا۟

they (had) prospered

yaghnaw

فِيهَآ ۗ

therein

fīhā

أَلَآ

No doubt

alā

إِنَّ

indeed

inna

ثَمُودَا۟

Thamud

thamūdā

كَفَرُوا۟

disbelieved

kafarū

رَبَّهُمْ ۗ

(in) their Lord

rabbahum

أَلَا

so

alā

بُعْدًۭا

away

buʿ'dan

لِّثَمُودَ

with Thamud

lithamūda

٦٨

As if they had never prospered therein. Unquestionably, Thamūd denied their Lord; then, away with Thamūd.

— Saheeh International

وَلَقَدْ

And certainly

walaqad

جَآءَتْ

came

jāat

رُسُلُنَآ

Our messengers

rusulunā

إِبْرَٰهِيمَ

(to) Ibrahim

ib'rāhīma

بِٱلْبُشْرَىٰ

with glad tidings

bil-bush'rā

قَالُوا۟

they said

qālū

سَلَـٰمًۭا ۖ

Peace

salāman

قَالَ

He said

qāla

سَلَـٰمٌۭ ۖ

Peace

salāmun

فَمَا

and not he delayed

famā

لَبِثَ

and not he delayed

labitha

أَن

to

an

جَآءَ

bring

jāa

بِعِجْلٍ

a calf

biʿij'lin

حَنِيذٍۢ

roasted

ḥanīdhin

٦٩

And certainly did Our messengers [i.e., angels] come to Abraham with good tidings; they said, "Peace." He said, "Peace," and did not delay in bringing [them] a roasted calf.

— Saheeh International

فَلَمَّا

But when

falammā

رَءَآ

he saw

raā

أَيْدِيَهُمْ

their hands

aydiyahum

لَا

not

تَصِلُ

reaching

taṣilu

إِلَيْهِ

to it

ilayhi

نَكِرَهُمْ

he felt unfamiliar of them

nakirahum

وَأَوْجَسَ

and felt apprehension

wa-awjasa

مِنْهُمْ

from them

min'hum

خِيفَةًۭ ۚ

[a fear]

khīfatan

قَالُوا۟

They said

qālū

لَا

(Do) not

تَخَفْ

fear

takhaf

إِنَّآ

Indeed, we

innā

أُرْسِلْنَآ

[we] have been sent

ur'sil'nā

إِلَىٰ

to

ilā

قَوْمِ

(the) people

qawmi

لُوطٍۢ

(of) Lut

lūṭin

٧٠

But when he saw their hands not reaching for it, he distrusted them and felt from them apprehension.1 They said, "Fear not. We have been sent to the people of Lot."

— Saheeh International

وَٱمْرَأَتُهُۥ

And his wife

wa-im'ra-atuhu

قَآئِمَةٌۭ

(was) standing

qāimatun

فَضَحِكَتْ

and she laughed

faḍaḥikat

فَبَشَّرْنَـٰهَا

Then We gave her glad tidings

fabasharnāhā

بِإِسْحَـٰقَ

of Isaac

bi-is'ḥāqa

وَمِن

and after

wamin

وَرَآءِ

and after

warāi

إِسْحَـٰقَ

Isaac

is'ḥāqa

يَعْقُوبَ

(of) Yaqub

yaʿqūba

٧١

And his wife was standing, and she smiled.1 Then We gave her good tidings of Isaac and after Isaac, Jacob.

— Saheeh International

قَالَتْ

She said

qālat

يَـٰوَيْلَتَىٰٓ

Woe to me

yāwaylatā

ءَأَلِدُ

Shall I bear a child

a-alidu

وَأَنَا۠

while I am

wa-anā

عَجُوزٌۭ

an old woman

ʿajūzun

وَهَـٰذَا

and this

wahādhā

بَعْلِى

my husband

baʿlī

شَيْخًا ۖ

(is) an old man

shaykhan

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

هَـٰذَا

this

hādhā

لَشَىْءٌ

(is) surely a thing

lashayon

عَجِيبٌۭ

amazing

ʿajībun

٧٢

She said, "Woe to me!1 Shall I give birth while I am an old woman and this, my husband, is an old man? Indeed, this is an amazing thing!"

— Saheeh International

قَالُوٓا۟

They said

qālū

أَتَعْجَبِينَ

Are you amazed

ataʿjabīna

مِنْ

at

min

أَمْرِ

(the) decree of Allah

amri

ٱللَّهِ ۖ

(the) decree of Allah

l-lahi

رَحْمَتُ

The Mercy of Allah

raḥmatu

ٱللَّهِ

The Mercy of Allah

l-lahi

وَبَرَكَـٰتُهُۥ

and His blessings

wabarakātuhu

عَلَيْكُمْ

(be) upon you

ʿalaykum

أَهْلَ

people

ahla

ٱلْبَيْتِ ۚ

(of) the house

l-bayti

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed, He

innahu

حَمِيدٌۭ

(is) All-Praiseworthy

ḥamīdun

مَّجِيدٌۭ

All-Glorious

majīdun

٧٣

They said, "Are you amazed at the decree of Allāh? May the mercy of Allāh and His blessings be upon you, people of the house. Indeed, He is Praiseworthy and Honorable."

— Saheeh International

فَلَمَّا

And when

falammā

ذَهَبَ

(had) gone away

dhahaba

عَنْ

from

ʿan

إِبْرَٰهِيمَ

Ibrahim

ib'rāhīma

ٱلرَّوْعُ

the fright

l-rawʿu

وَجَآءَتْهُ

and had reached him

wajāathu

ٱلْبُشْرَىٰ

the glad tidings

l-bush'rā

يُجَـٰدِلُنَا

he argued with Us

yujādilunā

فِى

concerning

قَوْمِ

the people

qawmi

لُوطٍ

of Lut

lūṭin

٧٤

And when the fright had left Abraham and the good tidings had reached him, he began to argue [i.e., plead] with Us1 concerning the people of Lot.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

إِبْرَٰهِيمَ

Ibrahim

ib'rāhīma

لَحَلِيمٌ

(was) certainly forbearing

laḥalīmun

أَوَّٰهٌۭ

imploring

awwāhun

مُّنِيبٌۭ

and oft-returning

munībun

٧٥

Indeed, Abraham was forbearing, grieving1 and [frequently] returning [to Allāh].

— Saheeh International

يَـٰٓإِبْرَٰهِيمُ

O Ibrahim

yāib'rāhīmu

أَعْرِضْ

Turn away

aʿriḍ

عَنْ

from

ʿan

هَـٰذَآ ۖ

this

hādhā

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed, it

innahu

قَدْ

certainly

qad

جَآءَ

has come

jāa

أَمْرُ

(the) Command

amru

رَبِّكَ ۖ

(of) your Lord

rabbika

وَإِنَّهُمْ

and indeed, [they]

wa-innahum

ءَاتِيهِمْ

(will) come (for) them

ātīhim

عَذَابٌ

a punishment

ʿadhābun

غَيْرُ

(which) cannot

ghayru

مَرْدُودٍۢ

(be) repelled

mardūdin

٧٦

[The angels said], "O Abraham, give up this [plea]. Indeed, the command of your Lord has come, and indeed, there will reach them a punishment that cannot be repelled."

— Saheeh International

وَلَمَّا

And when

walammā

جَآءَتْ

came

jāat

رُسُلُنَا

Our messengers

rusulunā

لُوطًۭا

(to) Lut

lūṭan

سِىٓءَ

he was distressed

sīa

بِهِمْ

for them

bihim

وَضَاقَ

and felt straitened

waḍāqa

بِهِمْ

for them

bihim

ذَرْعًۭا

(and) uneasy

dharʿan

وَقَالَ

and said

waqāla

هَـٰذَا

This

hādhā

يَوْمٌ

(is) a day

yawmun

عَصِيبٌۭ

distressful

ʿaṣībun

٧٧

And when Our messengers, [the angels], came to Lot, he was anguished for them and felt for them great discomfort1 and said, "This is a trying day."

— Saheeh International

وَجَآءَهُۥ

And came (to) him

wajāahu

قَوْمُهُۥ

his people

qawmuhu

يُهْرَعُونَ

rushing

yuh'raʿūna

إِلَيْهِ

to him

ilayhi

وَمِن

and before

wamin

قَبْلُ

and before

qablu

كَانُوا۟

they (had) been

kānū

يَعْمَلُونَ

doing

yaʿmalūna

ٱلسَّيِّـَٔاتِ ۚ

the evil deeds

l-sayiāti

قَالَ

He said

qāla

يَـٰقَوْمِ

O my people

yāqawmi

هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ

These

hāulāi

بَنَاتِى

(are) my daughters

banātī

هُنَّ

they

hunna

أَطْهَرُ

(are) purer

aṭharu

لَكُمْ ۖ

for you

lakum

فَٱتَّقُوا۟

So fear

fa-ittaqū

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

وَلَا

and (do) not

walā

تُخْزُونِ

disgrace me

tukh'zūni

فِى

concerning

ضَيْفِىٓ ۖ

my guests

ḍayfī

أَلَيْسَ

Is (there) not

alaysa

مِنكُمْ

among you

minkum

رَجُلٌۭ

a man

rajulun

رَّشِيدٌۭ

right-minded

rashīdun

٧٨

And his people came hastening to him, and before [this] they had been doing evil deeds.1 He said, "O my people, these are my daughters;2 they are purer for you. So fear Allāh and do not disgrace me concerning my guests. Is there not among you a man of reason?"

— Saheeh International

قَالُوا۟

They said

qālū

لَقَدْ

Verily

laqad

عَلِمْتَ

you know

ʿalim'ta

مَا

(that) not

لَنَا

we have

lanā

فِى

concerning

بَنَاتِكَ

your daughters

banātika

مِنْ

any

min

حَقٍّۢ

right

ḥaqqin

وَإِنَّكَ

And indeed, you

wa-innaka

لَتَعْلَمُ

surely know

lataʿlamu

مَا

what

نُرِيدُ

we want

nurīdu

٧٩

They said, "You have already known that we have not concerning your daughters [i.e., women] any claim [i.e., desire], and indeed, you know what we want."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

لَوْ

If

law

أَنَّ

that

anna

لِى

I had

بِكُمْ

over you

bikum

قُوَّةً

power

quwwatan

أَوْ

or

aw

ءَاوِىٓ

I could take refuge

āwī

إِلَىٰ

in

ilā

رُكْنٍۢ

a support

ruk'nin

شَدِيدٍۢ

strong

shadīdin

٨٠

He said, "If only I had against you some power or could take refuge in a strong support."

— Saheeh International

قَالُوا۟

They said

qālū

يَـٰلُوطُ

O Lut

yālūṭu

إِنَّا

Indeed, we

innā

رُسُلُ

(are) messengers

rusulu

رَبِّكَ

(of) your Lord

rabbika

لَن

never

lan

يَصِلُوٓا۟

they will reach

yaṣilū

إِلَيْكَ ۖ

you

ilayka

فَأَسْرِ

So travel

fa-asri

بِأَهْلِكَ

with your family

bi-ahlika

بِقِطْعٍۢ

in a part

biqiṭ'ʿin

مِّنَ

of

mina

ٱلَّيْلِ

the night

al-layli

وَلَا

and (let) not

walā

يَلْتَفِتْ

look back

yaltafit

مِنكُمْ

anyone of you

minkum

أَحَدٌ

anyone of you

aḥadun

إِلَّا

except

illā

ٱمْرَأَتَكَ ۖ

your wife

im'ra-ataka

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed, it

innahu

مُصِيبُهَا

will strike her

muṣībuhā

مَآ

what

أَصَابَهُمْ ۚ

will strike them

aṣābahum

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

مَوْعِدَهُمُ

their appointed time

mawʿidahumu

ٱلصُّبْحُ ۚ

(is) morning

l-ṣub'ḥu

أَلَيْسَ

Is not

alaysa

ٱلصُّبْحُ

the morning

l-ṣub'ḥu

بِقَرِيبٍۢ

near

biqarībin

٨١

They [the angels] said, "O Lot, indeed we are messengers of your Lord; [therefore], they will never reach you. So set out with your family during a portion of the night1 and let not any among you look back - except your wife; indeed, she will be struck by that which strikes them. Indeed, their appointment is [for] the morning. Is not the morning near?"

— Saheeh International

فَلَمَّا

So when

falammā

جَآءَ

came

jāa

أَمْرُنَا

Our Command

amrunā

جَعَلْنَا

We made

jaʿalnā

عَـٰلِيَهَا

its upside

ʿāliyahā

سَافِلَهَا

its downside

sāfilahā

وَأَمْطَرْنَا

and We rained

wa-amṭarnā

عَلَيْهَا

upon them

ʿalayhā

حِجَارَةًۭ

stones

ḥijāratan

مِّن

of

min

سِجِّيلٍۢ

baked clay

sijjīlin

مَّنضُودٍۢ

(in) layers

manḍūdin

٨٢

So when Our command came, We made the highest part [of the city] its lowest and rained upon them stones of layered hard clay, [which were]

— Saheeh International

مُّسَوَّمَةً

Marked

musawwamatan

عِندَ

from

ʿinda

رَبِّكَ ۖ

your Lord

rabbika

وَمَا

And not

wamā

هِىَ

it

hiya

مِنَ

(is) from

mina

ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ

the wrongdoers

l-ẓālimīna

بِبَعِيدٍۢ

far

bibaʿīdin

٨٣

Marked from your Lord. And it [i.e., Allāh's punishment] is not from the wrongdoers [very] far.

— Saheeh International

۞ وَإِلَىٰ

And to

wa-ilā

مَدْيَنَ

Madyan

madyana

أَخَاهُمْ

their brother

akhāhum

شُعَيْبًۭا ۚ

Shuaib

shuʿayban

قَالَ

He said

qāla

يَـٰقَوْمِ

O my people

yāqawmi

ٱعْبُدُوا۟

Worship

uʿ'budū

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

مَا

not

لَكُم

(is) for you

lakum

مِّنْ

any

min

إِلَـٰهٍ

god

ilāhin

غَيْرُهُۥ ۖ

other than Him

ghayruhu

وَلَا

And (do) not

walā

تَنقُصُوا۟

decrease

tanquṣū

ٱلْمِكْيَالَ

(from) the measure

l-mik'yāla

وَٱلْمِيزَانَ ۚ

and the scale

wal-mīzāna

إِنِّىٓ

Indeed, I

innī

أَرَىٰكُم

see you

arākum

بِخَيْرٍۢ

in prosperity

bikhayrin

وَإِنِّىٓ

but indeed, I

wa-innī

أَخَافُ

fear

akhāfu

عَلَيْكُمْ

for you

ʿalaykum

عَذَابَ

punishment

ʿadhāba

يَوْمٍۢ

(of) a Day

yawmin

مُّحِيطٍۢ

all-encompassing

muḥīṭin

٨٤

And to Madyan [We sent] their brother Shuʿayb. He said, "O my people, worship Allāh; you have no deity other than Him. And do not decrease from the measure and the scale. Indeed, I see you in prosperity, but indeed, I fear for you the punishment of an all-encompassing Day.

— Saheeh International

وَيَـٰقَوْمِ

And O my people

wayāqawmi

أَوْفُوا۟

Give full

awfū

ٱلْمِكْيَالَ

measure

l-mik'yāla

وَٱلْمِيزَانَ

and weight

wal-mīzāna

بِٱلْقِسْطِ ۖ

in justice

bil-qis'ṭi

وَلَا

and (do) not

walā

تَبْخَسُوا۟

deprive

tabkhasū

ٱلنَّاسَ

the people

l-nāsa

أَشْيَآءَهُمْ

(of) their things

ashyāahum

وَلَا

and (do) not

walā

تَعْثَوْا۟

act wickedly

taʿthaw

فِى

in

ٱلْأَرْضِ

the earth

l-arḍi

مُفْسِدِينَ

spreading corruption

muf'sidīna

٨٥

And O my people, give full measure and weight in justice and do not deprive the people of their due and do not commit abuse on the earth, spreading corruption.

— Saheeh International

بَقِيَّتُ

(What) remains

baqiyyatu

ٱللَّهِ

(from) Allah

l-lahi

خَيْرٌۭ

(is) best

khayrun

لَّكُمْ

for you

lakum

إِن

if

in

كُنتُم

you are

kuntum

مُّؤْمِنِينَ ۚ

believers

mu'minīna

وَمَآ

And not

wamā

أَنَا۠

I am

anā

عَلَيْكُم

over you

ʿalaykum

بِحَفِيظٍۢ

a guardian

biḥafīẓin

٨٦

What remains [lawful] from Allāh is best for you, if you would be believers. But I am not a guardian over you."

— Saheeh International

قَالُوا۟

They said

qālū

يَـٰشُعَيْبُ

O Shuaib

yāshuʿaybu

أَصَلَوٰتُكَ

Does your prayer

aṣalatuka

تَأْمُرُكَ

command you

tamuruka

أَن

that

an

نَّتْرُكَ

we leave

natruka

مَا

what

يَعْبُدُ

worship

yaʿbudu

ءَابَآؤُنَآ

our forefathers

ābāunā

أَوْ

or

aw

أَن

that

an

نَّفْعَلَ

we do

nafʿala

فِىٓ

concerning

أَمْوَٰلِنَا

our wealth

amwālinā

مَا

what

نَشَـٰٓؤُا۟ ۖ

we will

nashāu

إِنَّكَ

Indeed you

innaka

لَأَنتَ

surely you

la-anta

ٱلْحَلِيمُ

(are) the forbearing

l-ḥalīmu

ٱلرَّشِيدُ

the right-minded

l-rashīdu

٨٧

They said, "O Shuʿayb, does your prayer [i.e., religion] command you that we should leave what our fathers worship or not do with our wealth what we please? Indeed, you are the forbearing, the discerning!"1

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

يَـٰقَوْمِ

O my people

yāqawmi

أَرَءَيْتُمْ

Do you see

ara-aytum

إِن

if

in

كُنتُ

I am

kuntu

عَلَىٰ

on

ʿalā

بَيِّنَةٍۢ

a clear evidence

bayyinatin

مِّن

from

min

رَّبِّى

my Lord

rabbī

وَرَزَقَنِى

and He has provided me

warazaqanī

مِنْهُ

from Himself

min'hu

رِزْقًا

a good provision

riz'qan

حَسَنًۭا ۚ

a good provision

ḥasanan

وَمَآ

And not

wamā

أُرِيدُ

I intend

urīdu

أَنْ

that

an

أُخَالِفَكُمْ

I differ from you

ukhālifakum

إِلَىٰ

in

ilā

مَآ

what

أَنْهَىٰكُمْ

I forbid you

anhākum

عَنْهُ ۚ

from it

ʿanhu

إِنْ

Not

in

أُرِيدُ

I intend

urīdu

إِلَّا

except

illā

ٱلْإِصْلَـٰحَ

the reform

l-iṣ'lāḥa

مَا

as much as I am able

ٱسْتَطَعْتُ ۚ

as much as I am able

is'taṭaʿtu

وَمَا

And not

wamā

تَوْفِيقِىٓ

(is) my success

tawfīqī

إِلَّا

except

illā

بِٱللَّهِ ۚ

with Allah

bil-lahi

عَلَيْهِ

Upon Him

ʿalayhi

تَوَكَّلْتُ

I trust

tawakkaltu

وَإِلَيْهِ

and to Him

wa-ilayhi

أُنِيبُ

I turn

unību

٨٨

He said, "O my people, have you considered: if I am upon clear evidence from my Lord and He has provided me with a good provision from Him...?1 And I do not intend to differ from you in that which I have forbidden you; I only intend reform as much as I am able. And my success is not but through Allāh. Upon Him I have relied, and to Him I return.2

— Saheeh International

وَيَـٰقَوْمِ

And O my people

wayāqawmi

لَا

(Let) not cause you to sin

يَجْرِمَنَّكُمْ

(Let) not cause you to sin

yajrimannakum

شِقَاقِىٓ

my dissension

shiqāqī

أَن

lest

an

يُصِيبَكُم

befalls you

yuṣībakum

مِّثْلُ

similar

mith'lu

مَآ

(to) what

أَصَابَ

befell

aṣāba

قَوْمَ

(the) people of Nuh

qawma

نُوحٍ

(the) people of Nuh

nūḥin

أَوْ

or

aw

قَوْمَ

(the) people of Hud

qawma

هُودٍ

(the) people of Hud

hūdin

أَوْ

or

aw

قَوْمَ

people of Salih

qawma

صَـٰلِحٍۢ ۚ

people of Salih

ṣāliḥin

وَمَا

And not

wamā

قَوْمُ

(are the) people of Lut

qawmu

لُوطٍۢ

(are the) people of Lut

lūṭin

مِّنكُم

from you

minkum

بِبَعِيدٍۢ

far off

bibaʿīdin

٨٩

And O my people, let not [your] dissension from me cause you to be struck by that similar to what struck the people of Noah or the people of Hūd or the people of Ṣāliḥ. And the people of Lot are not from you far away.

— Saheeh International

وَٱسْتَغْفِرُوا۟

And ask forgiveness

wa-is'taghfirū

رَبَّكُمْ

(of) your Lord

rabbakum

ثُمَّ

then

thumma

تُوبُوٓا۟

turn in repentance

tūbū

إِلَيْهِ ۚ

to Him

ilayhi

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

رَبِّى

my Lord

rabbī

رَحِيمٌۭ

(is) Most Merciful

raḥīmun

وَدُودٌۭ

Most Loving

wadūdun

٩٠

And ask forgiveness of your Lord and then repent to Him. Indeed, my Lord is Merciful and Affectionate."

— Saheeh International

قَالُوا۟

They said

qālū

يَـٰشُعَيْبُ

O Shuaib

yāshuʿaybu

مَا

Not

نَفْقَهُ

we understand

nafqahu

كَثِيرًۭا

much

kathīran

مِّمَّا

of what

mimmā

تَقُولُ

you say

taqūlu

وَإِنَّا

and indeed, we

wa-innā

لَنَرَىٰكَ

surely [we] see you

lanarāka

فِينَا

among us

fīnā

ضَعِيفًۭا ۖ

weak

ḍaʿīfan

وَلَوْلَا

And if not

walawlā

رَهْطُكَ

for your family

rahṭuka

لَرَجَمْنَـٰكَ ۖ

surely we would have stoned you

larajamnāka

وَمَآ

and you are not

wamā

أَنتَ

and you are not

anta

عَلَيْنَا

against us

ʿalaynā

بِعَزِيزٍۢ

mighty

biʿazīzin

٩١

They said, "O Shuʿayb, we do not understand much of what you say, and indeed, we consider you among us as weak. And if not for your family, we would have stoned you [to death]; and you are not to us one respected."

— Saheeh International

قَالَ

He said

qāla

يَـٰقَوْمِ

O my people

yāqawmi

أَرَهْطِىٓ

Is my family

arahṭī

أَعَزُّ

mightier

aʿazzu

عَلَيْكُم

on you

ʿalaykum

مِّنَ

than

mina

ٱللَّهِ

Allah

l-lahi

وَٱتَّخَذْتُمُوهُ

And you have taken Him

wa-ittakhadhtumūhu

وَرَآءَكُمْ

behind your

warāakum

ظِهْرِيًّا ۖ

backs

ẓih'riyyan

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

رَبِّى

my Lord

rabbī

بِمَا

of what

bimā

تَعْمَلُونَ

you do

taʿmalūna

مُحِيطٌۭ

(is) All-Encompassing

muḥīṭun

٩٢

He said, "O my people, is my family more respected for power by you than Allāh? But you put Him behind your backs [in neglect]. Indeed, my Lord is encompassing of what you do.

— Saheeh International

وَيَـٰقَوْمِ

And O my people

wayāqawmi

ٱعْمَلُوا۟

Work

iʿ'malū

عَلَىٰ

(according) to

ʿalā

مَكَانَتِكُمْ

your position

makānatikum

إِنِّى

indeed, I am

innī

عَـٰمِلٌۭ ۖ

working

ʿāmilun

سَوْفَ

Soon

sawfa

تَعْلَمُونَ

you will know

taʿlamūna

مَن

(on) whom

man

يَأْتِيهِ

will come

yatīhi

عَذَابٌۭ

a punishment

ʿadhābun

يُخْزِيهِ

(that will) disgrace him

yukh'zīhi

وَمَنْ

and who

waman

هُوَ

[he]

huwa

كَـٰذِبٌۭ ۖ

(is) a liar

kādhibun

وَٱرْتَقِبُوٓا۟

And watch

wa-ir'taqibū

إِنِّى

indeed, I am

innī

مَعَكُمْ

with you

maʿakum

رَقِيبٌۭ

a watcher

raqībun

٩٣

And O my people, work according to your position; indeed, I am working. You are going to know to whom will come a punishment that will disgrace him and who is a liar. So watch; indeed, I am with you a watcher, [awaiting the outcome]."

— Saheeh International

وَلَمَّا

And when

walammā

جَآءَ

came

jāa

أَمْرُنَا

Our Command

amrunā

نَجَّيْنَا

We saved

najjaynā

شُعَيْبًۭا

Shuaib

shuʿayban

وَٱلَّذِينَ

and those who

wa-alladhīna

ءَامَنُوا۟

believed

āmanū

مَعَهُۥ

with him

maʿahu

بِرَحْمَةٍۢ

by a Mercy

biraḥmatin

مِّنَّا

from Us

minnā

وَأَخَذَتِ

And seized

wa-akhadhati

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

ظَلَمُوا۟

wronged

ẓalamū

ٱلصَّيْحَةُ

the thunderous blast

l-ṣayḥatu

فَأَصْبَحُوا۟

then they became

fa-aṣbaḥū

فِى

in

دِيَـٰرِهِمْ

their homes

diyārihim

جَـٰثِمِينَ

fallen prone

jāthimīna

٩٤

And when Our command came, We saved Shuʿayb and those who believed with him, by mercy from Us. And the shriek seized those who had wronged, and they became within their homes [corpses] fallen prone

— Saheeh International

كَأَن

As if

ka-an

لَّمْ

not

lam

يَغْنَوْا۟

they (had) prospered

yaghnaw

فِيهَآ ۗ

therein

fīhā

أَلَا

So

alā

بُعْدًۭا

away

buʿ'dan

لِّمَدْيَنَ

with Madyan

limadyana

كَمَا

as

kamā

بَعِدَتْ

was taken away

baʿidat

ثَمُودُ

the Thamud

thamūdu

٩٥

As if they had never prospered therein. Then, away with Madyan as Thamūd was taken away.

— Saheeh International

وَلَقَدْ

And certainly

walaqad

أَرْسَلْنَا

We sent

arsalnā

مُوسَىٰ

Musa

mūsā

بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا

with Our Signs

biāyātinā

وَسُلْطَـٰنٍۢ

and an authority

wasul'ṭānin

مُّبِينٍ

clear

mubīnin

٩٦

And We did certainly send Moses with Our signs and a clear authority1

— Saheeh International

إِلَىٰ

To

ilā

فِرْعَوْنَ

Firaun

fir'ʿawna

وَمَلَإِي۟هِۦ

and his chiefs

wamala-ihi

فَٱتَّبَعُوٓا۟

but they followed

fa-ittabaʿū

أَمْرَ

(the) command of Firaun

amra

فِرْعَوْنَ ۖ

(the) command of Firaun

fir'ʿawna

وَمَآ

and not

wamā

أَمْرُ

(the) command of Firaun

amru

فِرْعَوْنَ

(the) command of Firaun

fir'ʿawna

بِرَشِيدٍۢ

was right

birashīdin

٩٧

To Pharaoh and his establishment, but they followed the command of Pharaoh, and the command of Pharaoh was not [at all] discerning.

— Saheeh International

يَقْدُمُ

He will precede

yaqdumu

قَوْمَهُۥ

his people

qawmahu

يَوْمَ

(on the) Day

yawma

ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ

(of) the Resurrection

l-qiyāmati

فَأَوْرَدَهُمُ

and lead them

fa-awradahumu

ٱلنَّارَ ۖ

(into) the Fire

l-nāra

وَبِئْسَ

And wretched

wabi'sa

ٱلْوِرْدُ

(is) the place

l-wir'du

ٱلْمَوْرُودُ

to which (they are) led

l-mawrūdu

٩٨

He will precede his people on the Day of Resurrection and lead them into the Fire; and wretched is the place to which they are led.

— Saheeh International

وَأُتْبِعُوا۟

And they were followed

wa-ut'biʿū

فِى

in

هَـٰذِهِۦ

this

hādhihi

لَعْنَةًۭ

(by) a curse

laʿnatan

وَيَوْمَ

and (on the) Day

wayawma

ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ ۚ

(of) the Resurrection

l-qiyāmati

بِئْسَ

Wretched

bi'sa

ٱلرِّفْدُ

(is) the gift

l-rif'du

ٱلْمَرْفُودُ

which (will) be given

l-marfūdu

٩٩

And they were followed in this [world] with a curse and on the Day of Resurrection. And wretched is the gift1 which is given.

— Saheeh International

ذَٰلِكَ

That

dhālika

مِنْ

(is) from

min

أَنۢبَآءِ

(the) news

anbāi

ٱلْقُرَىٰ

(of) the cities

l-qurā

نَقُصُّهُۥ

(which) We relate

naquṣṣuhu

عَلَيْكَ ۖ

to you

ʿalayka

مِنْهَا

of them

min'hā

قَآئِمٌۭ

some are standing

qāimun

وَحَصِيدٌۭ

and (some) mown

waḥaṣīdun

١٠٠

That is from the news of the cities, which We relate to you; of them, some are [still] standing and some are [as] a harvest [mowed down].1

— Saheeh International

وَمَا

And not

wamā

ظَلَمْنَـٰهُمْ

We wronged them

ẓalamnāhum

وَلَـٰكِن

but

walākin

ظَلَمُوٓا۟

they wronged

ẓalamū

أَنفُسَهُمْ ۖ

themselves

anfusahum

فَمَآ

So not

famā

أَغْنَتْ

availed

aghnat

عَنْهُمْ

them

ʿanhum

ءَالِهَتُهُمُ

their gods

ālihatuhumu

ٱلَّتِى

which

allatī

يَدْعُونَ

they invoked

yadʿūna

مِن

other than Allah

min

دُونِ

other than Allah

dūni

ٱللَّهِ

other than Allah

l-lahi

مِن

any

min

شَىْءٍۢ

thing

shayin

لَّمَّا

when

lammā

جَآءَ

came

jāa

أَمْرُ

(the) command (of) your Lord

amru

رَبِّكَ ۖ

(the) command (of) your Lord

rabbika

وَمَا

And not

wamā

زَادُوهُمْ

they increased them

zādūhum

غَيْرَ

other than

ghayra

تَتْبِيبٍۢ

ruin

tatbībin

١٠١

And We did not wrong them, but they wronged themselves. And they were not availed at all by their gods which they invoked other than Allāh when there came the command of your Lord. And they did not increase them in other than ruin.

— Saheeh International

وَكَذَٰلِكَ

And thus

wakadhālika

أَخْذُ

(is) the seizure (of) your Lord

akhdhu

رَبِّكَ

(is) the seizure (of) your Lord

rabbika

إِذَآ

when

idhā

أَخَذَ

He seizes

akhadha

ٱلْقُرَىٰ

the cities

l-qurā

وَهِىَ

while they

wahiya

ظَـٰلِمَةٌ ۚ

(are) doing wrong

ẓālimatun

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

أَخْذَهُۥٓ

His seizure

akhdhahu

أَلِيمٌۭ

(is) painful

alīmun

شَدِيدٌ

(and) severe

shadīdun

١٠٢

And thus is the seizure of your Lord when He seizes the cities while they are committing wrong. Indeed, His seizure is painful and severe.

— Saheeh International

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

فِى

in

ذَٰلِكَ

that

dhālika

لَـَٔايَةًۭ

(is) surely a Sign

laāyatan

لِّمَنْ

for (those) who

liman

خَافَ

fear

khāfa

عَذَابَ

(the) punishment

ʿadhāba

ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ ۚ

(of) the Hereafter

l-ākhirati

ذَٰلِكَ

That

dhālika

يَوْمٌۭ

(is) a Day

yawmun

مَّجْمُوعٌۭ

(will) be gathered

majmūʿun

لَّهُ

on it

lahu

ٱلنَّاسُ

the mankind

l-nāsu

وَذَٰلِكَ

and that

wadhālika

يَوْمٌۭ

(is) a Day

yawmun

مَّشْهُودٌۭ

witnessed

mashhūdun

١٠٣

Indeed in that is a sign for those who fear the punishment of the Hereafter. That is a Day for which the people will be collected, and that is a Day [which will be] witnessed.

— Saheeh International

وَمَا

And not

wamā

نُؤَخِّرُهُۥٓ

We delay it

nu-akhiruhu

إِلَّا

except

illā

لِأَجَلٍۢ

for a term

li-ajalin

مَّعْدُودٍۢ

limited

maʿdūdin

١٠٤

And We do not delay it except for a limited term.

— Saheeh International

يَوْمَ

(The) Day

yawma

يَأْتِ

(it) comes

yati

لَا

not

تَكَلَّمُ

will speak

takallamu

نَفْسٌ

a soul

nafsun

إِلَّا

except

illā

بِإِذْنِهِۦ ۚ

by His leave

bi-idh'nihi

فَمِنْهُمْ

Then among them

famin'hum

شَقِىٌّۭ

(will be the) wretched

shaqiyyun

وَسَعِيدٌۭ

and (the) glad

wasaʿīdun

١٠٥

The Day it comes no soul will speak except by His permission. And among them will be the wretched and the prosperous.

— Saheeh International

فَأَمَّا

As for

fa-ammā

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

شَقُوا۟

were wretched

shaqū

فَفِى

then (they will be) in

fafī

ٱلنَّارِ

the Fire

l-nāri

لَهُمْ

For them

lahum

فِيهَا

therein

fīhā

زَفِيرٌۭ

(is) sighing

zafīrun

وَشَهِيقٌ

and wailing

washahīqun

١٠٦

As for those who were [destined to be] wretched, they will be in the Fire. For them therein is [violent] exhaling and inhaling.1

— Saheeh International

خَـٰلِدِينَ

(Will be) abiding

khālidīna

فِيهَا

therein

fīhā

مَا

as long as remain

دَامَتِ

as long as remain

dāmati

ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتُ

the heavens

l-samāwātu

وَٱلْأَرْضُ

and the earth

wal-arḍu

إِلَّا

except

illā

مَا

what your Lord wills

شَآءَ

what your Lord wills

shāa

رَبُّكَ ۚ

what your Lord wills

rabbuka

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

رَبَّكَ

your Lord

rabbaka

فَعَّالٌۭ

(is) All-Accomplisher

faʿʿālun

لِّمَا

of what

limā

يُرِيدُ

He intends

yurīdu

١٠٧

[They will be] abiding therein as long as the heavens and the earth endure, except what your Lord should will. Indeed, your Lord is an effecter of what He intends.

— Saheeh International

۞ وَأَمَّا

And as for

wa-ammā

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

سُعِدُوا۟

were glad

suʿidū

فَفِى

then (they will be) in

fafī

ٱلْجَنَّةِ

Paradise

l-janati

خَـٰلِدِينَ

(will be) abiding

khālidīna

فِيهَا

therein

fīhā

مَا

as long as remains

دَامَتِ

as long as remains

dāmati

ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتُ

the heavens

l-samāwātu

وَٱلْأَرْضُ

and the earth

wal-arḍu

إِلَّا

except

illā

مَا

what your Lord wills

شَآءَ

what your Lord wills

shāa

رَبُّكَ ۖ

what your Lord wills

rabbuka

عَطَآءً

a bestowal

ʿaṭāan

غَيْرَ

not

ghayra

مَجْذُوذٍۢ

interrupted

majdhūdhin

١٠٨

And as for those who were [destined to be] prosperous, they will be in Paradise, abiding therein as long as the heavens and the earth endure, except what your Lord should will - a bestowal uninterrupted.

— Saheeh International

فَلَا

So (do) not

falā

تَكُ

be

taku

فِى

in

مِرْيَةٍۢ

doubt

mir'yatin

مِّمَّا

as to what

mimmā

يَعْبُدُ

worship

yaʿbudu

هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ ۚ

these (polytheists)

hāulāi

مَا

Not

يَعْبُدُونَ

they worship

yaʿbudūna

إِلَّا

except

illā

كَمَا

as what

kamā

يَعْبُدُ

worshipped

yaʿbudu

ءَابَآؤُهُم

their forefathers

ābāuhum

مِّن

before

min

قَبْلُ ۚ

before

qablu

وَإِنَّا

And indeed, We

wa-innā

لَمُوَفُّوهُمْ

will surely pay them in full

lamuwaffūhum

نَصِيبَهُمْ

their share

naṣībahum

غَيْرَ

without

ghayra

مَنقُوصٍۢ

being diminished

manqūṣin

١٠٩

So do not be in doubt, [O Muḥammad], as to what these [polytheists] are worshipping. They worship not except as their fathers worshipped before. And indeed, We will give them their share undiminished.

— Saheeh International

وَلَقَدْ

And verily

walaqad

ءَاتَيْنَا

We gave

ātaynā

مُوسَى

Musa

mūsā

ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ

the Book

l-kitāba

فَٱخْتُلِفَ

but differences arose

fa-ukh'tulifa

فِيهِ ۚ

therein

fīhi

وَلَوْلَا

And if not

walawlā

كَلِمَةٌۭ

(for) a Word

kalimatun

سَبَقَتْ

(that) preceded

sabaqat

مِن

from

min

رَّبِّكَ

your Lord

rabbika

لَقُضِىَ

surely would have been judged

laquḍiya

بَيْنَهُمْ ۚ

between them

baynahum

وَإِنَّهُمْ

And indeed, they

wa-innahum

لَفِى

surely (are) in

lafī

شَكٍّۢ

doubt

shakkin

مِّنْهُ

concerning it

min'hu

مُرِيبٍۢ

suspicious

murībin

١١٠

And We had certainly given Moses the Scripture, but it came under disagreement. And if not for a word1 that preceded from your Lord, it would have been judged between them. And indeed they are, concerning it [i.e., the Qur’ān], in disquieting doubt.

— Saheeh International

وَإِنَّ

And indeed

wa-inna

كُلًّۭا

to each [when]

kullan

لَّمَّا

to each [when]

lammā

لَيُوَفِّيَنَّهُمْ

surely will pay them in full

layuwaffiyannahum

رَبُّكَ

your Lord

rabbuka

أَعْمَـٰلَهُمْ ۚ

their deeds

aʿmālahum

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed, He

innahu

بِمَا

of what

bimā

يَعْمَلُونَ

they do

yaʿmalūna

خَبِيرٌۭ

(is) All-Aware

khabīrun

١١١

And indeed, each [of the believers and disbelievers] - your Lord will fully compensate them for their deeds. Indeed, He is Aware of what they do.

— Saheeh International

فَٱسْتَقِمْ

So stand firm

fa-is'taqim

كَمَآ

as

kamā

أُمِرْتَ

you are commanded

umir'ta

وَمَن

and (those) who

waman

تَابَ

turn (in repentance)

tāba

مَعَكَ

with you

maʿaka

وَلَا

and (do) not

walā

تَطْغَوْا۟ ۚ

transgress

taṭghaw

إِنَّهُۥ

Indeed, He

innahu

بِمَا

of what

bimā

تَعْمَلُونَ

you do

taʿmalūna

بَصِيرٌۭ

(is) All-Seer

baṣīrun

١١٢

So remain on a right course as you have been commanded, [you] and those who have turned back with you [to Allāh], and do not transgress. Indeed, He is Seeing of what you do.

— Saheeh International

وَلَا

And (do) not

walā

تَرْكَنُوٓا۟

incline

tarkanū

إِلَى

to

ilā

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

ظَلَمُوا۟

do wrong

ẓalamū

فَتَمَسَّكُمُ

lest touches you

fatamassakumu

ٱلنَّارُ

the Fire

l-nāru

وَمَا

and not

wamā

لَكُم

(is) for you

lakum

مِّن

besides Allah

min

دُونِ

besides Allah

dūni

ٱللَّهِ

besides Allah

l-lahi

مِنْ

any

min

أَوْلِيَآءَ

protectors

awliyāa

ثُمَّ

then

thumma

لَا

not

تُنصَرُونَ

you will be helped

tunṣarūna

١١٣

And do not incline toward those who do wrong, lest you be touched by the Fire, and you would not have other than Allāh any protectors; then you would not be helped.

— Saheeh International

وَأَقِمِ

And establish

wa-aqimi

ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ

the prayer

l-ṣalata

طَرَفَىِ

(at the) two ends

ṭarafayi

ٱلنَّهَارِ

(of) the day

l-nahāri

وَزُلَفًۭا

and (at) the approach

wazulafan

مِّنَ

of

mina

ٱلَّيْلِ ۚ

the night

al-layli

إِنَّ

Indeed

inna

ٱلْحَسَنَـٰتِ

the good deeds

l-ḥasanāti

يُذْهِبْنَ

remove

yudh'hib'na

ٱلسَّيِّـَٔاتِ ۚ

the evil deeds

l-sayiāti

ذَٰلِكَ

That

dhālika

ذِكْرَىٰ

(is) a reminder

dhik'rā

لِلذَّٰكِرِينَ

for those who remember

lildhākirīna

١١٤

And establish prayer at the two ends of the day and at the approach of the night. Indeed, good deeds do away with misdeeds. That is a reminder for those who remember.

— Saheeh International

وَٱصْبِرْ

And be patient

wa-iṣ'bir

فَإِنَّ

for indeed

fa-inna

ٱللَّهَ

Allah

l-laha

لَا

(does) not

يُضِيعُ

let go waste

yuḍīʿu

أَجْرَ

(the) reward

ajra

ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ

(of) the good-doers

l-muḥ'sinīna

١١٥

And be patient, for indeed, Allāh does not allow to be lost the reward of those who do good.

— Saheeh International

فَلَوْلَا

So why not

falawlā

كَانَ

had been

kāna

مِنَ

of

mina

ٱلْقُرُونِ

the generations

l-qurūni

مِن

before you

min

قَبْلِكُمْ

before you

qablikum

أُو۟لُوا۟

those possessing a remnant

ulū

بَقِيَّةٍۢ

those possessing a remnant

baqiyyatin

يَنْهَوْنَ

forbidding

yanhawna

عَنِ

from

ʿani

ٱلْفَسَادِ

the corruption

l-fasādi

فِى

in

ٱلْأَرْضِ

the earth

l-arḍi

إِلَّا

except

illā

قَلِيلًۭا

a few

qalīlan

مِّمَّنْ

of those

mimman

أَنجَيْنَا

We saved

anjaynā

مِنْهُمْ ۗ

among them

min'hum

وَٱتَّبَعَ

But followed

wa-ittabaʿa

ٱلَّذِينَ

those who

alladhīna

ظَلَمُوا۟

did wrong

ẓalamū

مَآ

what

أُتْرِفُوا۟

luxury they were given

ut'rifū

فِيهِ

therein

fīhi

وَكَانُوا۟

and they were

wakānū

مُجْرِمِينَ

criminals

muj'rimīna

١١٦

So why were there not1 among the generations before you those of enduring discrimination forbidding corruption on earth - except a few of those We saved from among them? But those who wronged pursued what luxury they were given therein, and they were criminals.

— Saheeh International

وَمَا

And not

wamā

كَانَ

would

kāna

رَبُّكَ

your Lord

rabbuka

لِيُهْلِكَ

destroy

liyuh'lika

ٱلْقُرَىٰ

the cities

l-qurā

بِظُلْمٍۢ

unjustly

biẓul'min

وَأَهْلُهَا

while its people

wa-ahluhā

مُصْلِحُونَ

(were) reformers

muṣ'liḥūna

١١٧

And your Lord would not have destroyed the cities unjustly while their people were reformers.

— Saheeh International

وَلَوْ

And if

walaw

شَآءَ

your Lord (had) willed

shāa

رَبُّكَ

your Lord (had) willed

rabbuka

لَجَعَلَ

surely He (could) have made

lajaʿala

ٱلنَّاسَ

the mankind

l-nāsa

أُمَّةًۭ

one community

ummatan

وَٰحِدَةًۭ ۖ

one community

wāḥidatan

وَلَا

but not

walā

يَزَالُونَ

they will cease

yazālūna

مُخْتَلِفِينَ

to differ

mukh'talifīna

١١٨

And if your Lord had willed, He could have made mankind one community; but they will not cease to differ,

— Saheeh International

إِلَّا

Except

illā

مَن

(on) whom

man

رَّحِمَ

your Lord has bestowed Mercy

raḥima

رَبُّكَ ۚ

your Lord has bestowed Mercy

rabbuka

وَلِذَٰلِكَ

and for that

walidhālika

خَلَقَهُمْ ۗ

He created them

khalaqahum

وَتَمَّتْ

And will be fulfilled

watammat

كَلِمَةُ

(the) Word of your Lord

kalimatu

رَبِّكَ

(the) Word of your Lord

rabbika

لَأَمْلَأَنَّ

Surely I will fill

la-amla-anna

جَهَنَّمَ

Hell

jahannama

مِنَ

with

mina

ٱلْجِنَّةِ

the Jinn

l-jinati

وَٱلنَّاسِ

and the men

wal-nāsi

أَجْمَعِينَ

all together

ajmaʿīna

١١٩

Except whom your Lord has given mercy, and for that He created them. But the word of your Lord is to be fulfilled that, "I will surely fill Hell with jinn and men all together."

— Saheeh International

وَكُلًّۭا

And each

wakullan

نَّقُصُّ

We relate

naquṣṣu

عَلَيْكَ

to you

ʿalayka

مِنْ

of

min

أَنۢبَآءِ

(the) news

anbāi

ٱلرُّسُلِ

(of) the Messengers

l-rusuli

مَا

(for) that

نُثَبِّتُ

We may make firm

nuthabbitu

بِهِۦ

with it

bihi

فُؤَادَكَ ۚ

your heart

fuādaka

وَجَآءَكَ

And has come to you

wajāaka

فِى

in

هَـٰذِهِ

this

hādhihi

ٱلْحَقُّ

the truth

l-ḥaqu

وَمَوْعِظَةٌۭ

and an admonition

wamawʿiẓatun

وَذِكْرَىٰ

and a reminder

wadhik'rā

لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

for the believers

lil'mu'minīna

١٢٠

And each [story] We relate to you from the news of the messengers is that by which We make firm your heart. And there has come to you, in this, the truth and an instruction and a reminder for the believers.

— Saheeh International

وَقُل

And say

waqul

لِّلَّذِينَ

to those who

lilladhīna

لَا

(do) not

يُؤْمِنُونَ

believe

yu'minūna

ٱعْمَلُوا۟

Work

iʿ'malū

عَلَىٰ

(according) to

ʿalā

مَكَانَتِكُمْ

your position

makānatikum

إِنَّا

indeed, we

innā

عَـٰمِلُونَ

(are also) working

ʿāmilūna

١٢١

And say to those who do not believe, "Work according to your position; indeed, we are working.

— Saheeh International

وَٱنتَظِرُوٓا۟

And wait

wa-intaẓirū

إِنَّا

indeed, we

innā

مُنتَظِرُونَ

(are) ones who wait

muntaẓirūna

١٢٢

And wait; indeed, we are waiting."

— Saheeh International

وَلِلَّهِ

And for Allah

walillahi

غَيْبُ

(is the) unseen

ghaybu

ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ

(of) the heavens

l-samāwāti

وَٱلْأَرْضِ

and the earth

wal-arḍi

وَإِلَيْهِ

and to Him

wa-ilayhi

يُرْجَعُ

will be returned

yur'jaʿu

ٱلْأَمْرُ

the matter

l-amru

كُلُّهُۥ

all (of) it

kulluhu

فَٱعْبُدْهُ

so worship Him

fa-uʿ'bud'hu

وَتَوَكَّلْ

and put your trust

watawakkal

عَلَيْهِ ۚ

upon Him

ʿalayhi

وَمَا

And your Lord is not

wamā

رَبُّكَ

And your Lord is not

rabbuka

بِغَـٰفِلٍ

unaware

bighāfilin

عَمَّا

of what

ʿammā

تَعْمَلُونَ

you do

taʿmalūna

١٢٣

And to Allāh belong the unseen [aspects] of the heavens and the earth and to Him will be returned the matter, all of it, so worship Him and rely upon Him. And your Lord is not unaware of that which you do.

— Saheeh International
