الٓر ۚ Alif Lam Ra alif-lam-ra (This is) a Book kitābun are perfected uḥ'kimat its Verses āyātuhu moreover thumma explained in detail fuṣṣilat from (he One Who) min from (he One Who) ladun (is) All-Wise ḥakīmin All-Aware khabīrin
Alif, Lām, Rā.1 [This is] a Book whose verses are perfected and then presented in detail from [one who is] Wise and Aware2
أَلَّا That "Not allā you worship taʿbudū but illā Allah l-laha Indeed, I am innanī to you lakum from Him min'hu a warner nadhīrun and a bearer of glad tidings wabashīrun
[Through a messenger, saying], "Do not worship except Allāh. Indeed, I am to you from Him a warner and a bringer of good tidings,"
وَأَنِ And that wa-ani Seek forgiveness is'taghfirū (of) your Lord rabbakum and thumma turn in repentance tūbū to Him ilayhi He will let you yumattiʿ'kum enjoy matāʿan a good ḥasanan for ilā a term ajalin appointed musamman And give wayu'ti (to) every kulla owner dhī (of) grace faḍlin His Grace faḍlahu But if wa-in you turn away tawallaw then indeed, I fa-innī fear akhāfu for you ʿalaykum (the) punishment ʿadhāba (of) a Great Day yawmin (of) a Great Day kabīrin
And [saying], "Seek forgiveness of your Lord and repent to Him, [and] He will let you enjoy a good provision for a specified term and give every doer of favor his favor [i.e., reward]. But if you turn away, then indeed, I fear for you the punishment of a great Day.
إِلَى To ilā Allah l-lahi (is) your return marjiʿukum and He wahuwa (is) on ʿalā every kulli thing shayin All-Powerful qadīrun
To Allāh is your return, and He is over all things competent."
أَلَآ No doubt alā They innahum fold up yathnūna their breasts ṣudūrahum that they may hide liyastakhfū from Him min'hu Surely alā when ḥīna they cover (themselves) yastaghshūna (with) their garments thiyābahum He knows yaʿlamu what mā they conceal yusirrūna and what wamā they reveal yuʿ'linūna Indeed, He innahu (is) All-Knower ʿalīmun of what bidhāti (is in) the breasts l-ṣudūri
Unquestionably, they [i.e., the disbelievers] turn away their breasts to hide themselves from him. Unquestionably, [even] when they cover themselves in their clothing, He [i.e., Allāh] knows what they conceal and what they declare. Indeed, He is Knowing of that within the breasts.
۞ وَمَا And not wamā any min moving creature dābbatin in fī the earth l-arḍi but illā on ʿalā Allah l-lahi (is) its provision riz'quhā And He knows wayaʿlamu its dwelling place mus'taqarrahā and its place of storage wamus'tawdaʿahā All kullun (is) in fī a Record kitābin clear mubīnin
And there is no creature on earth but that upon Allāh is its provision, and He knows its place of dwelling and place of storage.1 All is in a clear register.
وَهُوَ And He wahuwa (is) the One Who alladhī created khalaqa the heavens l-samāwāti and the earth wal-arḍa in fī six sittati epochs ayyāmin and His throne was wakāna and His throne was ʿarshuhu on ʿalā the water l-māi that He might test [you] liyabluwakum which of you ayyukum (is) best aḥsanu (in) deed ʿamalan But if wala-in you say qul'ta Indeed, you innakum (will be) resurrected mabʿūthūna after min after baʿdi [the] death l-mawti surely would say layaqūlanna those who alladhīna disbelieved kafarū This is not in This is not hādhā but illā a magic siḥ'run clear mubīnun
And it is He who created the heavens and the earth in six days - and His Throne had been upon water - that He might test you as to which of you is best in deed. But if you say, "Indeed, you are resurrected after death," those who disbelieve will surely say, "This is not but obvious magic."
وَلَئِنْ And if wala-in We delay akharnā from them ʿanhumu the punishment l-ʿadhāba for ilā a time ummatin determined maʿdūdatin they will surely say layaqūlunna What mā detains it yaḥbisuhu No doubt alā (On) the Day yawma it comes to them yatīhim not laysa (will be) averted maṣrūfan from them ʿanhum and will surround waḥāqa them bihim what mā they used (to) kānū mock at [it] bihi mock at [it] yastahziūna
And if We hold back from them the punishment for a limited time, they will surely say,1 "What detains it?" Unquestionably, on the Day it comes to them, it will not be averted from them, and they will be enveloped by what they used to ridicule.
وَلَئِنْ And if wala-in We give man a taste adhaqnā We give man a taste l-insāna (of) Mercy from Us minnā (of) Mercy from Us raḥmatan then thumma We withdraw it nazaʿnāhā from him min'hu indeed, he innahu (is) despairing layaūsun (and) ungrateful kafūrun
And if We give man a taste of mercy from Us and then We withdraw it from him, indeed, he is despairing and ungrateful.
وَلَئِنْ But if wala-in We give him a taste adhaqnāhu (of) favor naʿmāa after baʿda hardship ḍarrāa (has) touched him massathu surely, he will say layaqūlanna Have gone dhahaba the evils l-sayiātu from me ʿannī Indeed, he innahu (is) exultant lafariḥun (and) boastful fakhūrun
But if We give him a taste of favor after hardship has touched him, he will surely say, "Bad times have left me." Indeed, he is exultant and boastful -
إِلَّا Except illā those who alladhīna (are) patient ṣabarū and do waʿamilū the good deeds l-ṣāliḥāti those ulāika for them lahum (will be) forgiveness maghfiratun and a reward wa-ajrun great kabīrun
Except for those who are patient and do righteous deeds; those will have forgiveness and great reward.
فَلَعَلَّكَ Then possibly you falaʿallaka (may) give up tārikun a part baʿḍa (of) what mā is revealed yūḥā to you ilayka and straitened waḍāiqun by it bihi your breast ṣadruka because an they say yaqūlū Why not lawlā is sent down unzila for him ʿalayhi a treasure kanzun or aw has come jāa with him maʿahu an Angel malakun Only innamā you anta (are) a warner nadhīrun And Allah wal-lahu (is) on ʿalā every kulli thing shayin a Guardian wakīlun
Then would you possibly leave [out] some of what is revealed to you,1 or is your breast constrained by it because they say, "Why has there not been sent down to him a treasure or come with him an angel?" But you are only a warner. And Allāh is Disposer of all things.
أَمْ Or am they say yaqūlūna He has fabricated it if'tarāhu Say qul Then bring fatū ten biʿashri Surahs suwarin like it mith'lihi fabricated muf'tarayātin and call wa-id'ʿū whoever mani you can is'taṭaʿtum besides Allah min besides Allah dūni besides Allah l-lahi if in you are kuntum truthful ṣādiqīna
Or do they say, "He invented it"? Say, "Then bring ten sūrahs like it that have been invented and call upon [for assistance] whomever you can besides Allāh, if you should be truthful."
فَإِلَّمْ Then if not fa-illam they respond yastajībū to you lakum then know fa-iʿ'lamū that annamā it was sent down unzila with the knowledge of Allah biʿil'mi with the knowledge of Allah l-lahi and that wa-an (there is) no lā god ilāha except illā Him huwa Then, would fahal you antum (be) Muslims mus'limūna
And if they do not respond to you - then know that it [i.e., the Qur’ān] was revealed with the knowledge of Allāh1 and that there is no deity except Him. Then,2 would you [not] be Muslims?
مَن Whoever [is] man Whoever [is] kāna desires yurīdu the life l-ḥayata (of) the world l-dun'yā and its adornments wazīnatahā We will repay in full nuwaffi to them ilayhim (for) their deeds aʿmālahum therein fīhā and they wahum in it fīhā will not be lessened lā will not be lessened yub'khasūna
Whoever desires the life of this world and its adornments - We fully repay them for their deeds therein,1 and they therein will not be deprived.
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ Those ulāika (are) the ones who alladhīna (is) not laysa for them lahum in fī the Hereafter l-ākhirati except illā the Fire l-nāru And (has) gone in vain waḥabiṭa what mā they did ṣanaʿū therein fīhā and (is) worthless wabāṭilun what mā they used (to) kānū do yaʿmalūna
Those are the ones for whom there is not in the Hereafter but the Fire. And lost is what they did therein,1 and worthless is what they used to do.
أَفَمَن Then is he who afaman is kāna on ʿalā a clear proof bayyinatin from min his Lord rabbihi and recites it wayatlūhu a witness shāhidun from Him min'hu and before it wamin and before it qablihi (was) a Book kitābu (of) Musa mūsā (as) a guide imāman and (as) mercy waraḥmatan Those ulāika believe yu'minūna in it bihi But whoever waman disbelieves yakfur in it bihi among mina the sects l-aḥzābi then the Fire fal-nāru (will be) his promised (meeting) place mawʿiduhu So (do) not falā be taku in fī doubt mir'yatin about it min'hu Indeed, it innahu (is) the truth l-ḥaqu from min your Lord rabbika but walākinna most akthara (of) the people l-nāsi (do) not lā believe yu'minūna
So is one who [stands] upon a clear evidence from his Lord [like the aforementioned]? And a witness1 from Him follows it,2 and before it was the Scripture of Moses to lead and as mercy. Those [believers in the former revelations] believe in it [i.e., the Qur’ān]. But whoever disbelieves in it from the [various] factions - the Fire is his promised destination. So be not in doubt about it. Indeed, it is the truth from your Lord, but most of the people do not believe.
وَمَنْ And who waman (is) more unjust aẓlamu than (he) who mimmani invents if'tarā against ʿalā Allah l-lahi a lie kadhiban Those ulāika will be presented yuʿ'raḍūna before ʿalā their Lord rabbihim and will say wayaqūlu the witnesses l-ashhādu These (are) hāulāi those who alladhīna lied kadhabū against ʿalā their Lord rabbihim No doubt alā (The) curse of Allah laʿnatu (The) curse of Allah l-lahi (is) on ʿalā the wrongdoers l-ẓālimīna
And who is more unjust than he who invents a lie about Allāh? Those will be presented before their Lord, and the witnesses will say, "These are the ones who lied against their Lord." Unquestionably, the curse of Allāh is upon the wrongdoers.
ٱلَّذِينَ Those who alladhīna hinder yaṣuddūna from ʿan (the) way sabīli (of) Allah l-lahi and seek (in) it wayabghūnahā crookedness ʿiwajan while they wahum in the Hereafter bil-ākhirati [they] hum (are) disbelievers kāfirūna
Who averted [people] from the way of Allāh and sought to make it [seem] deviant while they, concerning the Hereafter, were disbelievers.
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ Those ulāika not lam will be yakūnū (able to) escape muʿ'jizīna in fī the earth l-arḍi and not wamā is kāna for them lahum besides min besides dūni Allah l-lahi any min protectors awliyāa And will be doubled yuḍāʿafu for them lahumu the punishment l-ʿadhābu Not mā they were kānū able yastaṭīʿūna (to) hear l-samʿa and not wamā they used (to) kānū see yub'ṣirūna
Those were not causing failure [to Allāh] on earth, nor did they have besides Allāh any protectors. For them the punishment will be multiplied. They were not able to hear, nor did they see.1
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ Those ulāika (are) the ones who alladhīna (have) lost khasirū their souls anfusahum and lost waḍalla from them ʿanhum (is) what mā they used kānū (to) invent yaftarūna
Those are the ones who will have lost themselves, and lost from them is what they used to invent.
لَا No lā doubt jarama that they annahum in fī the Hereafter l-ākhirati [they] humu (will be) the greatest losers l-akhsarūna
Assuredly, it is they in the Hereafter who will be the greatest losers.
إِنَّ Indeed inna those who alladhīna believe āmanū and do waʿamilū good deeds l-ṣāliḥāti and humble themselves wa-akhbatū before ilā their Lord rabbihim those ulāika (are the) companions aṣḥābu (of) Paradise l-janati they hum in it fīhā (will) abide forever khālidūna
Indeed, they who have believed and done righteous deeds and humbled themselves to their Lord - those are the companions of Paradise; they will abide eternally therein.
۞ مَثَلُ (The) example mathalu (of) the two parties l-farīqayni (is) like the blind kal-aʿmā and the deaf wal-aṣami and the seer wal-baṣīri and the hearer wal-samīʿi Are hal they equal yastawiyāni (in) comparison mathalan Then, will not afalā you take heed tadhakkarūna
The example of the two parties is like the blind and deaf, and the seeing and hearing. Are they equal in comparison? Then, will you not remember?
وَلَقَدْ And verily walaqad We sent arsalnā Nuh nūḥan to ilā his people qawmihi Indeed, I am innī to you lakum a warner nadhīrun clear mubīnun
And We had certainly sent Noah to his people, [saying], "Indeed, I am to you a clear warner
أَن That an (do) not lā worship taʿbudū except illā Allah l-laha Indeed, I innī [I] fear akhāfu for you ʿalaykum (the) punishment ʿadhāba (of) a Day yawmin painful alīmin
That you not worship except Allāh. Indeed, I fear for you the punishment of a painful day."
فَقَالَ So said faqāla the chiefs l-mala-u (of) those who alladhīna disbelieved kafarū from min his people qawmihi Not mā we see you narāka but illā a man basharan like us mith'lanā and not wamā we see you narāka followed [you] ittabaʿaka except illā those who alladhīna [they] hum (are) the lowest of us arādhilunā immature in opinion bādiya immature in opinion l-rayi And not wamā we see narā in you lakum over us ʿalaynā any min merit faḍlin nay bal we think you naẓunnukum (are) liars kādhibīna
So the eminent among those who disbelieved from his people said, "We do not see you but as a man like ourselves, and we do not see you followed except by those who are the lowest of us [and] at first suggestion.1 And we do not see in you over us any merit; rather, we think you are liars."
قَالَ He said qāla O my people yāqawmi Do you see ara-aytum if in I was kuntu on ʿalā (the) clear proof bayyinatin from min my Lord rabbī while He has given me waātānī mercy raḥmatan from min Himself ʿindihi but (it) has been obscured faʿummiyat from you ʿalaykum should We compel you (to accept) it anul'zimukumūhā while you (are) wa-antum averse to it lahā averse to it kārihūna
He said, "O my people, have you considered: if I should be upon clear evidence from my Lord while He has given me mercy from Himself but it has been made unapparent to you, should we force it upon you while you are averse to it?
وَيَـٰقَوْمِ And O my people wayāqawmi not lā I ask (of) you asalukum for it ʿalayhi any wealth mālan Not in (is) my reward ajriya except illā from ʿalā Allah l-lahi And not wamā I am anā going to drive away biṭāridi those who alladhīna believed āmanū Indeed, they innahum (will) be meeting mulāqū their Lord rabbihim but I walākinnī see you arākum (are) a people qawman ignorant tajhalūna
And O my people, I ask not of you for it any wealth. My reward is not but from Allāh. And I am not one to drive away those who have believed. Indeed, they will meet their Lord, but I see that you are a people behaving ignorantly.
وَيَـٰقَوْمِ And O my people wayāqawmi Who man would help me yanṣurunī against mina Allah l-lahi if in I drove them away ṭaradttuhum Then, will not afalā you take heed tadhakkarūna
And O my people, who would protect me from Allāh if I drove them away? Then will you not be reminded?
وَلَآ And not walā I say aqūlu to you lakum (that) with me ʿindī (are the) treasures khazāinu (of) Allah l-lahi and not walā I know aʿlamu the unseen l-ghayba and not walā I say aqūlu that I am innī an Angel malakun and not walā I say aqūlu for those whom lilladhīna look down upon tazdarī your eyes aʿyunukum never lan will Allah give them yu'tiyahumu will Allah give them l-lahu any good khayran Allah l-lahu knows best aʿlamu what bimā (is) in fī their souls anfusihim Indeed, I innī then idhan (will be) surely of lamina the wrongdoers l-ẓālimīna
And I do not tell you that I have the depositories [containing the provision] of Allāh or that I know the unseen, nor do I tell you that I am an angel, nor do I say of those upon whom your eyes look down that Allāh will never grant them any good. Allāh is most knowing of what is within their souls. Indeed, I would then be among the wrongdoers [i.e., the unjust]."
قَالُوا۟ They said qālū O Nuh yānūḥu Indeed qad you disputed with us jādaltanā and you (have been) frequent fa-aktharta (in) dispute with us jidālanā So bring us fatinā what bimā you threaten us (with) taʿidunā if in you are kunta of mina the truthful l-ṣādiqīna
They said, "O Noah, you have disputed [i.e., opposed] us and been frequent in dispute of us. So bring us what you threaten us, if you should be of the truthful."
قَالَ He said qāla Only innamā will bring it (on) you yatīkum will bring it (on) you bihi Allah l-lahu if in He wills shāa and not wamā you (are) antum one who (can) escape (it) bimuʿ'jizīna
He said, "Allāh will only bring it to you if He wills, and you will not cause [Him] failure.
وَلَا And (will) not walā benefit you yanfaʿukum my advice nuṣ'ḥī (even) if in I wish aradttu to an [I] advise anṣaḥa [to] you lakum if in it was Allah's kāna it was Allah's l-lahu will yurīdu to an let you go astray yugh'wiyakum He (is) huwa your Lord rabbukum and to Him wa-ilayhi you will be returned tur'jaʿūna
And my advice will not benefit you - although I wished to advise you - if Allāh should intend to put you in error. He is your Lord, and to Him you will be returned."
أَمْ Or am (do) they say yaqūlūna He has invented it if'tarāhu Say qul If ini I have invented it if'taraytuhu then on me faʿalayya (is) my crime ij'rāmī but I am wa-anā innocent barīon of what mimmā crimes you commit tuj'rimūna
Or do they say [about Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ)], "He invented it"? Say, "If I have invented it, then upon me is [the consequence of] my crime; but I am innocent of what [crimes] you commit."
وَأُوحِىَ And it was revealed waūḥiya to ilā Nuh nūḥin That annahu will never lan believe yu'mina from min your people qawmika except illā (those) who man have already qad believed āmana So (do) not falā (be) distressed tabta-is by what bimā they have been kānū doing yafʿalūna
And it was revealed to Noah that, "No one will believe from your people except those who have already believed, so do not be distressed by what they have been doing.
وَٱصْنَعِ And construct wa-iṣ'naʿi the ship l-ful'ka under Our Eyes bi-aʿyuninā and Our inspiration wawaḥyinā and (do) not walā address Me tukhāṭib'nī concerning fī those who alladhīna wronged ẓalamū indeed, they (are) innahum the ones (to be) drowned mugh'raqūna
And construct the ship under Our observation and Our inspiration and do not address Me concerning those who have wronged; indeed, they are [to be] drowned."
وَيَصْنَعُ And he was constructing wayaṣnaʿu the ship l-ful'ka and every time wakullamā passed marra by him ʿalayhi (the) chiefs mala-on of min his people qawmihi they ridiculed sakhirū [of] him min'hu He said qāla If in you ridicule taskharū us minnā then we fa-innā can ridicule naskharu you minkum as kamā you ridicule taskharūna
And he constructed the ship, and whenever an assembly of the eminent of his people passed by him, they ridiculed him. He said, "If you ridicule us, then we will ridicule you just as you ridicule.
فَسَوْفَ And soon fasawfa you will know taʿlamūna (on) whom man will come yatīhi a punishment ʿadhābun (that) will disgrace him yukh'zīhi and will descend wayaḥillu on him ʿalayhi a punishment ʿadhābun lasting muqīmun
And you are going to know who will get a punishment that will disgrace him [on earth] and upon whom will descend an enduring punishment [in the Hereafter]."
حَتَّىٰٓ Till ḥattā when idhā came jāa Our command amrunā and overflowed wafāra the oven l-tanūru We said qul'nā Load iḥ'mil in it fīhā of min every kind kullin a pair zawjayni two ith'nayni and your family wa-ahlaka except illā who man has preceded sabaqa against him ʿalayhi the word l-qawlu and whoever waman believed āmana And not wamā believed āmana with him maʿahu except illā a few qalīlun
[So it was], until when Our command came and the oven overflowed,1 We said, "Load upon it [i.e., the ship] of each [creature] two mates and your family, except those about whom the word [i.e., decree] has preceded, and [include] whoever has believed." But none had believed with him, except a few.
۞ وَقَالَ And he said waqāla Embark ir'kabū in it fīhā in the name bis'mi of Allah l-lahi (is) its course majrahā and its anchorage wamur'sāhā Indeed inna my Lord rabbī (is) certainly Oft-Forgiving laghafūrun Most Merciful raḥīmun
And [Noah] said, "Embark therein; in the name of Allāh [are] its course and its anchorage. Indeed, my Lord is Forgiving and Merciful."
وَهِىَ And it wahiya sailed tajrī with them bihim on fī the waves mawjin like mountains kal-jibāli and Nuh called out wanādā and Nuh called out nūḥun (to) his son ib'nahu and he was wakāna [in] fī apart maʿzilin O my son yābunayya Embark ir'kab with us maʿanā and (do) not walā be takun with maʿa the disbelievers l-kāfirīna
And it sailed with them through waves like mountains, and Noah called to his son who was apart [from them], "O my son, come aboard with us and be not with the disbelievers."
قَالَ He said qāla I will betake myself saāwī to ilā a mountain jabalin (that) will save me yaʿṣimunī from mina the water l-māi He said qāla (There is) no lā protector ʿāṣima today l-yawma from min the Command of Allah amri the Command of Allah l-lahi except illā (on) whom man He has mercy raḥima And came waḥāla (in) between them baynahumā the waves l-mawju so he was fakāna among mina the drowned l-mugh'raqīna
[But] he said, "I will take refuge on a mountain to protect me from the water." [Noah] said, "There is no protector today from the decree of Allāh, except for whom He gives mercy." And the waves came between them, and he was among the drowned.
وَقِيلَ And it was said waqīla O earth yāarḍu Swallow ib'laʿī your water māaki and O sky wayāsamāu Withhold aqliʿī And subsided waghīḍa the water l-māu and was fulfilled waquḍiya the Command l-amru And it rested wa-is'tawat on ʿalā the Judi l-jūdiyi And it was said waqīla Away buʿ'dan with the people lil'qawmi the wrongdoers l-ẓālimīna
And it was said, "O earth, swallow your water, and O sky, withhold [your rain]." And the water subsided, and the matter was accomplished, and it [i.e., the ship] came to rest on the [mountain of] Jūdiyy. And it was said, "Away with the wrongdoing people."
وَنَادَىٰ And Nuh called wanādā And Nuh called nūḥun (to) his Lord rabbahu and said faqāla O my Lord rabbi Indeed inna my son ib'nī (is) of min my family ahlī and indeed wa-inna Your promise waʿdaka (is) true l-ḥaqu and You wa-anta (are) the Most Just aḥkamu (of) the judges l-ḥākimīna
And Noah called to his Lord and said, "My Lord, indeed my son is of my family; and indeed, Your promise is true; and You are the most just of judges!"
قَالَ He said qāla O Nuh yānūḥu Indeed, he innahu (is) not laysa of min your family ahlika indeed, [he] innahu (his) deed ʿamalun (is) other than ghayru righteous ṣāliḥin so (do) not falā ask Me tasalni (about) what mā not laysa you have laka of it bihi any knowledge ʿil'mun Indeed, I innī admonish you aʿiẓuka lest an you be takūna among mina the ignorant l-jāhilīna
He said, "O Noah, indeed he is not of your family; indeed, he is [one whose] work was other than righteous, so ask Me not for that about which you have no knowledge. Indeed, I advise you, lest you be among the ignorant."
قَالَ He said qāla O my Lord rabbi Indeed, I innī seek refuge aʿūdhu in You bika that an I (should) ask You asalaka what mā not laysa I have lī of it bihi knowledge ʿil'mun And unless wa-illā You forgive taghfir me lī and You have mercy on me watarḥamnī I will be akun among mina the losers l-khāsirīna
[Noah] said, "My Lord, I seek refuge in You from asking that of which I have no knowledge. And unless You forgive me and have mercy upon me, I will be among the losers."
قِيلَ It was said qīla O Nuh yānūḥu Go down ih'biṭ with peace bisalāmin from Us minnā and blessings wabarakātin on you ʿalayka and on waʿalā the nations umamin from those mimman with you maʿaka But (to other) nations wa-umamun We will grant enjoyment sanumattiʿuhum then thumma will touch them yamassuhum from Us minnā a punishment ʿadhābun painful alīmun
It was said, "O Noah, disembark in security from Us and blessings upon you and upon nations [descending] from those with you. But other nations [of them] We will grant enjoyment; then there will touch them from Us a painful punishment."
تِلْكَ This til'ka (is) from min the news anbāi (of) the unseen l-ghaybi (which) We reveal nūḥīhā to you ilayka Not mā you were kunta knowing it taʿlamuhā you anta and not walā your people qawmuka from min before qabli this hādhā So be patient fa-iṣ'bir indeed inna the end l-ʿāqibata (is) for the God fearing lil'muttaqīna
That is from the news of the unseen which We reveal to you, [O Muḥammad]. You knew it not, neither you nor your people, before this. So be patient; indeed, the [best] outcome is for the righteous.
وَإِلَىٰ And to wa-ilā Aad ʿādin (We sent) their brother akhāhum Hud hūdan He said qāla O my people yāqawmi Worship uʿ'budū Allah l-laha not mā (is) for you lakum any min god ilāhin other than Him ghayruhu Not in you antum (are) but illā inventors muf'tarūna
And to ʿAad [We sent] their brother Hūd. He said, "O my people, worship Allāh; you have no deity other than Him. You are not but inventors [of falsehood].
يَـٰقَوْمِ O my people yāqawmi Not lā I ask you asalukum for it ʿalayhi any reward ajran Not in (is) my reward ajriya except illā from ʿalā the One Who alladhī created me faṭaranī Then will not afalā you use reason taʿqilūna
O my people, I do not ask you for it [i.e., my advice] any reward. My reward is only from the one who created me. Then will you not reason?
وَيَـٰقَوْمِ And O my people wayāqawmi Ask forgiveness is'taghfirū (of) your Lord rabbakum then thumma turn in repentance tūbū to Him ilayhi He will send yur'sili (from) the sky (rain) l-samāa upon you ʿalaykum (in) abundance mid'rāran and increase you wayazid'kum (in) strength quwwatan (added) to ilā your strength quwwatikum And (do) not walā turn away tatawallaw (as) criminals muj'rimīna
And O my people, ask forgiveness of your Lord and then repent to Him. He will send [rain from] the sky upon you in showers and increase you in strength [added] to your strength. And do not turn away, [being] criminals."
قَالُوا۟ They said qālū O Hud yāhūdu You have not brought us mā You have not brought us ji'tanā clear proofs bibayyinatin and not wamā we naḥnu (will) leave bitārikī our gods ālihatinā on ʿan your saying qawlika and not wamā we (are) naḥnu in you laka believers bimu'minīna
They said, "O Hūd, you have not brought us clear evidence, and we are not ones to leave our gods on your say-so. Nor are we believers in you.
إِن Not in we say naqūlu except (that) illā have seized you iʿ'tarāka some baʿḍu (of) our gods ālihatinā with evil bisūin He said qāla Indeed, I innī [I] call Allah to witness ush'hidu [I] call Allah to witness l-laha and (you) bear witness wa-ish'hadū that I am annī innocent barīon of what mimmā you associate tush'rikūna
We only say that some of our gods have possessed you with evil [i.e., insanity]." He said, "Indeed, I call Allāh to witness, and witness [yourselves] that I am free from whatever you associate with Allāh
مِن Other than Him min Other than Him dūnihi So plot against me fakīdūnī all together jamīʿan then thumma (do) not lā give me respite tunẓirūni
Other than Him. So plot against me all together; then do not give me respite.
إِنِّى Indeed, I innī [I] put my trust tawakkaltu upon ʿalā Allah l-lahi my Lord rabbī and your Lord warabbikum (There is) not mā of a moving creature min of a moving creature dābbatin but illā He huwa has grasp ākhidhun of its forelock bināṣiyatihā Indeed inna my Lord rabbī (is) on ʿalā a path ṣirāṭin straight mus'taqīmin
Indeed, I have relied upon Allāh, my Lord and your Lord. There is no creature but that He holds it by its forelock [i.e., controls it]. Indeed, my Lord is on a path [that is] straight.
فَإِن So if fa-in you turn away tawallaw then verily faqad I have conveyed to you ablaghtukum what mā I was sent ur'sil'tu with [it] bihi to you ilaykum And my Lord will give succession wayastakhlifu And my Lord will give succession rabbī (to) a people qawman other than you ghayrakum and not walā you will harm Him taḍurrūnahu (in) anything shayan Indeed inna my Lord rabbī (is) on ʿalā all kulli things shayin a Guardian ḥafīẓun
But if you turn away, then I have already conveyed that with which I was sent to you. My Lord will give succession to a people other than you, and you will not harm Him at all. Indeed my Lord is, over all things, Guardian."1
وَلَمَّا And when walammā came jāa Our command amrunā We saved najjaynā Hud hūdan and those who wa-alladhīna believed āmanū with him maʿahu by a Mercy biraḥmatin from Us minnā and We saved them wanajjaynāhum from min a punishment ʿadhābin severe ghalīẓin
And when Our command came, We saved Hūd and those who believed with him, by mercy from Us; and We saved them from a harsh punishment.
وَتِلْكَ And this watil'ka (was) Aad ʿādun they rejected jaḥadū (the) Signs biāyāti (of) their Lord rabbihim and disobeyed waʿaṣaw His Messengers rusulahu and followed wa-ittabaʿū (the) command amra (of) every kulli tyrant jabbārin obstinate ʿanīdin
And that was ʿAad, who rejected the signs of their Lord and disobeyed His messengers and followed the order of every obstinate tyrant.
وَأُتْبِعُوا۟ And they were followed wa-ut'biʿū in fī this hādhihi world l-dun'yā (with) a curse laʿnatan and (on the) Day wayawma (of) the Resurrection l-qiyāmati No doubt alā Indeed inna Aad ʿādan disbelieved kafarū their Lord rabbahum So alā away buʿ'dan with Aad liʿādin (the) people qawmi (of) Hud hūdin
And they were [therefore] followed in this world with a curse and [as well] on the Day of Resurrection. Unquestionably, ʿAad denied their Lord; then away with ʿAad, the people of Hūd.
۞ وَإِلَىٰ And to wa-ilā Thamud thamūda (We sent) their brother akhāhum Salih ṣāliḥan He said qāla O my people yāqawmi Worship uʿ'budū Allah l-laha not mā you have lakum any min god ilāhin other than Him ghayruhu He huwa produced you ansha-akum from mina the earth l-arḍi and settled you wa-is'taʿmarakum in it fīhā So ask forgiveness of Him fa-is'taghfirūhu then thumma turn in repentance tūbū to Him ilayhi Indeed inna my Lord rabbī (is) near qarībun All-Responsive mujībun
And to Thamūd [We sent] their brother Ṣāliḥ. He said, "O my people, worship Allāh; you have no deity other than Him. He has produced you from the earth and settled you in it, so ask forgiveness of Him and then repent to Him. Indeed, my Lord is near and responsive."
قَالُوا۟ They said qālū O Salih yāṣāliḥu Verily qad you were kunta among us fīnā the one in whom hope was placed marjuwwan before qabla this hādhā Do you forbid us atanhānā that an we worship naʿbuda what mā our forefathers worshipped yaʿbudu our forefathers worshipped ābāunā And indeed we wa-innanā surely (are) in lafī doubt shakkin about what mimmā you call us tadʿūnā to it ilayhi suspicious murībin
They said, "O Ṣāliḥ, you were among us a man of promise before this. Do you forbid us to worship what our fathers worshipped? And indeed we are, about that to which you invite us, in disquieting doubt."
قَالَ He said qāla O my people yāqawmi Do you see ara-aytum if in I am kuntu on ʿalā a clear proof bayyinatin from min my Lord rabbī and He has given me waātānī from Him min'hu a Mercy raḥmatan then who faman (can) help me yanṣurunī against mina Allah l-lahi if in I (were to) disobey Him ʿaṣaytuhu So not famā you would increase me tazīdūnanī but ghayra (in) loss takhsīrin
He said, "O my people, have you considered: if I should be upon clear evidence from my Lord and He has given me mercy from Himself, who would protect me from Allāh if I disobeyed Him? So you would not increase me except in loss.
وَيَـٰقَوْمِ And O my people wayāqawmi This hādhihi she-camel nāqatu (of) Allah l-lahi (is) for you lakum a Sign āyatan so leave her fadharūhā to eat takul in fī the earth arḍi (of) Allah l-lahi and (do) not walā touch her tamassūhā with harm bisūin lest will seize you fayakhudhakum a punishment ʿadhābun impending qarībun
And O my people, this is the she-camel of Allāh - [she is] to you a sign. So let her feed upon Allāh's earth and do not touch her with harm, or you will be taken by an impending punishment."
فَعَقَرُوهَا But they hamstrung her faʿaqarūhā So he said faqāla Enjoy (yourselves) tamattaʿū in fī your home(s) dārikum (for) three thalāthata days ayyāmin That dhālika (is) a promise waʿdun not ghayru (to) be belied makdhūbin
But they hamstrung her, so he said, "Enjoy yourselves in your homes for three days. That is a promise not to be denied [i.e., unfailing]."
فَلَمَّا So when falammā came jāa Our command amrunā We saved najjaynā Salih ṣāliḥan and those who wa-alladhīna believed āmanū with him maʿahu by a Mercy biraḥmatin from Us minnā and from wamin (the) disgrace khiz'yi (of) that Day yawmi-idhin Indeed inna your Lord rabbaka He huwa (is) All-Strong l-qawiyu All-Mighty l-ʿazīzu
So when Our command came, We saved Ṣāliḥ and those who believed with him, by mercy from Us, and [saved them] from the disgrace of that day.1 Indeed, it is your Lord who is the Powerful, the Exalted in Might.
وَأَخَذَ And seized wa-akhadha those who alladhīna wronged ẓalamū the thunderous blast l-ṣayḥatu then they became fa-aṣbaḥū in fī their homes diyārihim fallen prone jāthimīna
And the shriek1 seized those who had wronged, and they became within their homes [corpses] fallen prone
كَأَن As if ka-an not lam they (had) prospered yaghnaw therein fīhā No doubt alā indeed inna Thamud thamūdā disbelieved kafarū (in) their Lord rabbahum so alā away buʿ'dan with Thamud lithamūda
As if they had never prospered therein. Unquestionably, Thamūd denied their Lord; then, away with Thamūd.
وَلَقَدْ And certainly walaqad came jāat Our messengers rusulunā (to) Ibrahim ib'rāhīma with glad tidings bil-bush'rā they said qālū Peace salāman He said qāla Peace salāmun and not he delayed famā and not he delayed labitha to an bring jāa a calf biʿij'lin roasted ḥanīdhin
And certainly did Our messengers [i.e., angels] come to Abraham with good tidings; they said, "Peace." He said, "Peace," and did not delay in bringing [them] a roasted calf.
فَلَمَّا But when falammā he saw raā their hands aydiyahum not lā reaching taṣilu to it ilayhi he felt unfamiliar of them nakirahum and felt apprehension wa-awjasa from them min'hum [a fear] khīfatan They said qālū (Do) not lā fear takhaf Indeed, we innā [we] have been sent ur'sil'nā to ilā (the) people qawmi (of) Lut lūṭin
But when he saw their hands not reaching for it, he distrusted them and felt from them apprehension.1 They said, "Fear not. We have been sent to the people of Lot."
وَٱمْرَأَتُهُۥ And his wife wa-im'ra-atuhu (was) standing qāimatun and she laughed faḍaḥikat Then We gave her glad tidings fabasharnāhā of Isaac bi-is'ḥāqa and after wamin and after warāi Isaac is'ḥāqa (of) Yaqub yaʿqūba
And his wife was standing, and she smiled.1 Then We gave her good tidings of Isaac and after Isaac, Jacob.
قَالَتْ She said qālat Woe to me yāwaylatā Shall I bear a child a-alidu while I am wa-anā an old woman ʿajūzun and this wahādhā my husband baʿlī (is) an old man shaykhan Indeed inna this hādhā (is) surely a thing lashayon amazing ʿajībun
She said, "Woe to me!1 Shall I give birth while I am an old woman and this, my husband, is an old man? Indeed, this is an amazing thing!"
قَالُوٓا۟ They said qālū Are you amazed ataʿjabīna at min (the) decree of Allah amri (the) decree of Allah l-lahi The Mercy of Allah raḥmatu The Mercy of Allah l-lahi and His blessings wabarakātuhu (be) upon you ʿalaykum people ahla (of) the house l-bayti Indeed, He innahu (is) All-Praiseworthy ḥamīdun All-Glorious majīdun
They said, "Are you amazed at the decree of Allāh? May the mercy of Allāh and His blessings be upon you, people of the house. Indeed, He is Praiseworthy and Honorable."
فَلَمَّا And when falammā (had) gone away dhahaba from ʿan Ibrahim ib'rāhīma the fright l-rawʿu and had reached him wajāathu the glad tidings l-bush'rā he argued with Us yujādilunā concerning fī the people qawmi of Lut lūṭin
And when the fright had left Abraham and the good tidings had reached him, he began to argue [i.e., plead] with Us1 concerning the people of Lot.
إِنَّ Indeed inna Ibrahim ib'rāhīma (was) certainly forbearing laḥalīmun imploring awwāhun and oft-returning munībun
Indeed, Abraham was forbearing, grieving1 and [frequently] returning [to Allāh].
يَـٰٓإِبْرَٰهِيمُ O Ibrahim yāib'rāhīmu Turn away aʿriḍ from ʿan this hādhā Indeed, it innahu certainly qad has come jāa (the) Command amru (of) your Lord rabbika and indeed, [they] wa-innahum (will) come (for) them ātīhim a punishment ʿadhābun (which) cannot ghayru (be) repelled mardūdin
[The angels said], "O Abraham, give up this [plea]. Indeed, the command of your Lord has come, and indeed, there will reach them a punishment that cannot be repelled."
وَلَمَّا And when walammā came jāat Our messengers rusulunā (to) Lut lūṭan he was distressed sīa for them bihim and felt straitened waḍāqa for them bihim (and) uneasy dharʿan and said waqāla This hādhā (is) a day yawmun distressful ʿaṣībun
And when Our messengers, [the angels], came to Lot, he was anguished for them and felt for them great discomfort1 and said, "This is a trying day."
وَجَآءَهُۥ And came (to) him wajāahu his people qawmuhu rushing yuh'raʿūna to him ilayhi and before wamin and before qablu they (had) been kānū doing yaʿmalūna the evil deeds l-sayiāti He said qāla O my people yāqawmi These hāulāi (are) my daughters banātī they hunna (are) purer aṭharu for you lakum So fear fa-ittaqū Allah l-laha and (do) not walā disgrace me tukh'zūni concerning fī my guests ḍayfī Is (there) not alaysa among you minkum a man rajulun right-minded rashīdun
And his people came hastening to him, and before [this] they had been doing evil deeds.1 He said, "O my people, these are my daughters;2 they are purer for you. So fear Allāh and do not disgrace me concerning my guests. Is there not among you a man of reason?"
قَالُوا۟ They said qālū Verily laqad you know ʿalim'ta (that) not mā we have lanā concerning fī your daughters banātika any min right ḥaqqin And indeed, you wa-innaka surely know lataʿlamu what mā we want nurīdu
They said, "You have already known that we have not concerning your daughters [i.e., women] any claim [i.e., desire], and indeed, you know what we want."
قَالَ He said qāla If law that anna I had lī over you bikum power quwwatan or aw I could take refuge āwī in ilā a support ruk'nin strong shadīdin
He said, "If only I had against you some power or could take refuge in a strong support."
قَالُوا۟ They said qālū O Lut yālūṭu Indeed, we innā (are) messengers rusulu (of) your Lord rabbika never lan they will reach yaṣilū you ilayka So travel fa-asri with your family bi-ahlika in a part biqiṭ'ʿin of mina the night al-layli and (let) not walā look back yaltafit anyone of you minkum anyone of you aḥadun except illā your wife im'ra-ataka Indeed, it innahu will strike her muṣībuhā what mā will strike them aṣābahum Indeed inna their appointed time mawʿidahumu (is) morning l-ṣub'ḥu Is not alaysa the morning l-ṣub'ḥu near biqarībin
They [the angels] said, "O Lot, indeed we are messengers of your Lord; [therefore], they will never reach you. So set out with your family during a portion of the night1 and let not any among you look back - except your wife; indeed, she will be struck by that which strikes them. Indeed, their appointment is [for] the morning. Is not the morning near?"
فَلَمَّا So when falammā came jāa Our Command amrunā We made jaʿalnā its upside ʿāliyahā its downside sāfilahā and We rained wa-amṭarnā upon them ʿalayhā stones ḥijāratan of min baked clay sijjīlin (in) layers manḍūdin
So when Our command came, We made the highest part [of the city] its lowest and rained upon them stones of layered hard clay, [which were]
مُّسَوَّمَةً Marked musawwamatan from ʿinda your Lord rabbika And not wamā it hiya (is) from mina the wrongdoers l-ẓālimīna far bibaʿīdin
Marked from your Lord. And it [i.e., Allāh's punishment] is not from the wrongdoers [very] far.
۞ وَإِلَىٰ And to wa-ilā Madyan madyana their brother akhāhum Shuaib shuʿayban He said qāla O my people yāqawmi Worship uʿ'budū Allah l-laha not mā (is) for you lakum any min god ilāhin other than Him ghayruhu And (do) not walā decrease tanquṣū (from) the measure l-mik'yāla and the scale wal-mīzāna Indeed, I innī see you arākum in prosperity bikhayrin but indeed, I wa-innī fear akhāfu for you ʿalaykum punishment ʿadhāba (of) a Day yawmin all-encompassing muḥīṭin
And to Madyan [We sent] their brother Shuʿayb. He said, "O my people, worship Allāh; you have no deity other than Him. And do not decrease from the measure and the scale. Indeed, I see you in prosperity, but indeed, I fear for you the punishment of an all-encompassing Day.
وَيَـٰقَوْمِ And O my people wayāqawmi Give full awfū measure l-mik'yāla and weight wal-mīzāna in justice bil-qis'ṭi and (do) not walā deprive tabkhasū the people l-nāsa (of) their things ashyāahum and (do) not walā act wickedly taʿthaw in fī the earth l-arḍi spreading corruption muf'sidīna
And O my people, give full measure and weight in justice and do not deprive the people of their due and do not commit abuse on the earth, spreading corruption.
بَقِيَّتُ (What) remains baqiyyatu (from) Allah l-lahi (is) best khayrun for you lakum if in you are kuntum believers mu'minīna And not wamā I am anā over you ʿalaykum a guardian biḥafīẓin
What remains [lawful] from Allāh is best for you, if you would be believers. But I am not a guardian over you."
قَالُوا۟ They said qālū O Shuaib yāshuʿaybu Does your prayer aṣalatuka command you tamuruka that an we leave natruka what mā worship yaʿbudu our forefathers ābāunā or aw that an we do nafʿala concerning fī our wealth amwālinā what mā we will nashāu Indeed you innaka surely you la-anta (are) the forbearing l-ḥalīmu the right-minded l-rashīdu
They said, "O Shuʿayb, does your prayer [i.e., religion] command you that we should leave what our fathers worship or not do with our wealth what we please? Indeed, you are the forbearing, the discerning!"1
قَالَ He said qāla O my people yāqawmi Do you see ara-aytum if in I am kuntu on ʿalā a clear evidence bayyinatin from min my Lord rabbī and He has provided me warazaqanī from Himself min'hu a good provision riz'qan a good provision ḥasanan And not wamā I intend urīdu that an I differ from you ukhālifakum in ilā what mā I forbid you anhākum from it ʿanhu Not in I intend urīdu except illā the reform l-iṣ'lāḥa as much as I am able mā as much as I am able is'taṭaʿtu And not wamā (is) my success tawfīqī except illā with Allah bil-lahi Upon Him ʿalayhi I trust tawakkaltu and to Him wa-ilayhi I turn unību
He said, "O my people, have you considered: if I am upon clear evidence from my Lord and He has provided me with a good provision from Him...?1 And I do not intend to differ from you in that which I have forbidden you; I only intend reform as much as I am able. And my success is not but through Allāh. Upon Him I have relied, and to Him I return.2
وَيَـٰقَوْمِ And O my people wayāqawmi (Let) not cause you to sin lā (Let) not cause you to sin yajrimannakum my dissension shiqāqī lest an befalls you yuṣībakum similar mith'lu (to) what mā befell aṣāba (the) people of Nuh qawma (the) people of Nuh nūḥin or aw (the) people of Hud qawma (the) people of Hud hūdin or aw people of Salih qawma people of Salih ṣāliḥin And not wamā (are the) people of Lut qawmu (are the) people of Lut lūṭin from you minkum far off bibaʿīdin
And O my people, let not [your] dissension from me cause you to be struck by that similar to what struck the people of Noah or the people of Hūd or the people of Ṣāliḥ. And the people of Lot are not from you far away.
وَٱسْتَغْفِرُوا۟ And ask forgiveness wa-is'taghfirū (of) your Lord rabbakum then thumma turn in repentance tūbū to Him ilayhi Indeed inna my Lord rabbī (is) Most Merciful raḥīmun Most Loving wadūdun
And ask forgiveness of your Lord and then repent to Him. Indeed, my Lord is Merciful and Affectionate."
قَالُوا۟ They said qālū O Shuaib yāshuʿaybu Not mā we understand nafqahu much kathīran of what mimmā you say taqūlu and indeed, we wa-innā surely [we] see you lanarāka among us fīnā weak ḍaʿīfan And if not walawlā for your family rahṭuka surely we would have stoned you larajamnāka and you are not wamā and you are not anta against us ʿalaynā mighty biʿazīzin
They said, "O Shuʿayb, we do not understand much of what you say, and indeed, we consider you among us as weak. And if not for your family, we would have stoned you [to death]; and you are not to us one respected."
قَالَ He said qāla O my people yāqawmi Is my family arahṭī mightier aʿazzu on you ʿalaykum than mina Allah l-lahi And you have taken Him wa-ittakhadhtumūhu behind your warāakum backs ẓih'riyyan Indeed inna my Lord rabbī of what bimā you do taʿmalūna (is) All-Encompassing muḥīṭun
He said, "O my people, is my family more respected for power by you than Allāh? But you put Him behind your backs [in neglect]. Indeed, my Lord is encompassing of what you do.
وَيَـٰقَوْمِ And O my people wayāqawmi Work iʿ'malū (according) to ʿalā your position makānatikum indeed, I am innī working ʿāmilun Soon sawfa you will know taʿlamūna (on) whom man will come yatīhi a punishment ʿadhābun (that will) disgrace him yukh'zīhi and who waman [he] huwa (is) a liar kādhibun And watch wa-ir'taqibū indeed, I am innī with you maʿakum a watcher raqībun
And O my people, work according to your position; indeed, I am working. You are going to know to whom will come a punishment that will disgrace him and who is a liar. So watch; indeed, I am with you a watcher, [awaiting the outcome]."
وَلَمَّا And when walammā came jāa Our Command amrunā We saved najjaynā Shuaib shuʿayban and those who wa-alladhīna believed āmanū with him maʿahu by a Mercy biraḥmatin from Us minnā And seized wa-akhadhati those who alladhīna wronged ẓalamū the thunderous blast l-ṣayḥatu then they became fa-aṣbaḥū in fī their homes diyārihim fallen prone jāthimīna
And when Our command came, We saved Shuʿayb and those who believed with him, by mercy from Us. And the shriek seized those who had wronged, and they became within their homes [corpses] fallen prone
كَأَن As if ka-an not lam they (had) prospered yaghnaw therein fīhā So alā away buʿ'dan with Madyan limadyana as kamā was taken away baʿidat the Thamud thamūdu
As if they had never prospered therein. Then, away with Madyan as Thamūd was taken away.
وَلَقَدْ And certainly walaqad We sent arsalnā Musa mūsā with Our Signs biāyātinā and an authority wasul'ṭānin clear mubīnin
And We did certainly send Moses with Our signs and a clear authority1
إِلَىٰ To ilā Firaun fir'ʿawna and his chiefs wamala-ihi but they followed fa-ittabaʿū (the) command of Firaun amra (the) command of Firaun fir'ʿawna and not wamā (the) command of Firaun amru (the) command of Firaun fir'ʿawna was right birashīdin
To Pharaoh and his establishment, but they followed the command of Pharaoh, and the command of Pharaoh was not [at all] discerning.
يَقْدُمُ He will precede yaqdumu his people qawmahu (on the) Day yawma (of) the Resurrection l-qiyāmati and lead them fa-awradahumu (into) the Fire l-nāra And wretched wabi'sa (is) the place l-wir'du to which (they are) led l-mawrūdu
He will precede his people on the Day of Resurrection and lead them into the Fire; and wretched is the place to which they are led.
وَأُتْبِعُوا۟ And they were followed wa-ut'biʿū in fī this hādhihi (by) a curse laʿnatan and (on the) Day wayawma (of) the Resurrection l-qiyāmati Wretched bi'sa (is) the gift l-rif'du which (will) be given l-marfūdu
And they were followed in this [world] with a curse and on the Day of Resurrection. And wretched is the gift1 which is given.
ذَٰلِكَ That dhālika (is) from min (the) news anbāi (of) the cities l-qurā (which) We relate naquṣṣuhu to you ʿalayka of them min'hā some are standing qāimun and (some) mown waḥaṣīdun
That is from the news of the cities, which We relate to you; of them, some are [still] standing and some are [as] a harvest [mowed down].1
وَمَا And not wamā We wronged them ẓalamnāhum but walākin they wronged ẓalamū themselves anfusahum So not famā availed aghnat them ʿanhum their gods ālihatuhumu which allatī they invoked yadʿūna other than Allah min other than Allah dūni other than Allah l-lahi any min thing shayin when lammā came jāa (the) command (of) your Lord amru (the) command (of) your Lord rabbika And not wamā they increased them zādūhum other than ghayra ruin tatbībin
And We did not wrong them, but they wronged themselves. And they were not availed at all by their gods which they invoked other than Allāh when there came the command of your Lord. And they did not increase them in other than ruin.
وَكَذَٰلِكَ And thus wakadhālika (is) the seizure (of) your Lord akhdhu (is) the seizure (of) your Lord rabbika when idhā He seizes akhadha the cities l-qurā while they wahiya (are) doing wrong ẓālimatun Indeed inna His seizure akhdhahu (is) painful alīmun (and) severe shadīdun
And thus is the seizure of your Lord when He seizes the cities while they are committing wrong. Indeed, His seizure is painful and severe.
إِنَّ Indeed inna in fī that dhālika (is) surely a Sign laāyatan for (those) who liman fear khāfa (the) punishment ʿadhāba (of) the Hereafter l-ākhirati That dhālika (is) a Day yawmun (will) be gathered majmūʿun on it lahu the mankind l-nāsu and that wadhālika (is) a Day yawmun witnessed mashhūdun
Indeed in that is a sign for those who fear the punishment of the Hereafter. That is a Day for which the people will be collected, and that is a Day [which will be] witnessed.
وَمَا And not wamā We delay it nu-akhiruhu except illā for a term li-ajalin limited maʿdūdin
And We do not delay it except for a limited term.
يَوْمَ (The) Day yawma (it) comes yati not lā will speak takallamu a soul nafsun except illā by His leave bi-idh'nihi Then among them famin'hum (will be the) wretched shaqiyyun and (the) glad wasaʿīdun
The Day it comes no soul will speak except by His permission. And among them will be the wretched and the prosperous.
فَأَمَّا As for fa-ammā those who alladhīna were wretched shaqū then (they will be) in fafī the Fire l-nāri For them lahum therein fīhā (is) sighing zafīrun and wailing washahīqun
As for those who were [destined to be] wretched, they will be in the Fire. For them therein is [violent] exhaling and inhaling.1
خَـٰلِدِينَ (Will be) abiding khālidīna therein fīhā as long as remain mā as long as remain dāmati the heavens l-samāwātu and the earth wal-arḍu except illā what your Lord wills mā what your Lord wills shāa what your Lord wills rabbuka Indeed inna your Lord rabbaka (is) All-Accomplisher faʿʿālun of what limā He intends yurīdu
[They will be] abiding therein as long as the heavens and the earth endure, except what your Lord should will. Indeed, your Lord is an effecter of what He intends.
۞ وَأَمَّا And as for wa-ammā those who alladhīna were glad suʿidū then (they will be) in fafī Paradise l-janati (will be) abiding khālidīna therein fīhā as long as remains mā as long as remains dāmati the heavens l-samāwātu and the earth wal-arḍu except illā what your Lord wills mā what your Lord wills shāa what your Lord wills rabbuka a bestowal ʿaṭāan not ghayra interrupted majdhūdhin
And as for those who were [destined to be] prosperous, they will be in Paradise, abiding therein as long as the heavens and the earth endure, except what your Lord should will - a bestowal uninterrupted.
فَلَا So (do) not falā be taku in fī doubt mir'yatin as to what mimmā worship yaʿbudu these (polytheists) hāulāi Not mā they worship yaʿbudūna except illā as what kamā worshipped yaʿbudu their forefathers ābāuhum before min before qablu And indeed, We wa-innā will surely pay them in full lamuwaffūhum their share naṣībahum without ghayra being diminished manqūṣin
So do not be in doubt, [O Muḥammad], as to what these [polytheists] are worshipping. They worship not except as their fathers worshipped before. And indeed, We will give them their share undiminished.
وَلَقَدْ And verily walaqad We gave ātaynā Musa mūsā the Book l-kitāba but differences arose fa-ukh'tulifa therein fīhi And if not walawlā (for) a Word kalimatun (that) preceded sabaqat from min your Lord rabbika surely would have been judged laquḍiya between them baynahum And indeed, they wa-innahum surely (are) in lafī doubt shakkin concerning it min'hu suspicious murībin
And We had certainly given Moses the Scripture, but it came under disagreement. And if not for a word1 that preceded from your Lord, it would have been judged between them. And indeed they are, concerning it [i.e., the Qur’ān], in disquieting doubt.
وَإِنَّ And indeed wa-inna to each [when] kullan to each [when] lammā surely will pay them in full layuwaffiyannahum your Lord rabbuka their deeds aʿmālahum Indeed, He innahu of what bimā they do yaʿmalūna (is) All-Aware khabīrun
And indeed, each [of the believers and disbelievers] - your Lord will fully compensate them for their deeds. Indeed, He is Aware of what they do.
فَٱسْتَقِمْ So stand firm fa-is'taqim as kamā you are commanded umir'ta and (those) who waman turn (in repentance) tāba with you maʿaka and (do) not walā transgress taṭghaw Indeed, He innahu of what bimā you do taʿmalūna (is) All-Seer baṣīrun
So remain on a right course as you have been commanded, [you] and those who have turned back with you [to Allāh], and do not transgress. Indeed, He is Seeing of what you do.
وَلَا And (do) not walā incline tarkanū to ilā those who alladhīna do wrong ẓalamū lest touches you fatamassakumu the Fire l-nāru and not wamā (is) for you lakum besides Allah min besides Allah dūni besides Allah l-lahi any min protectors awliyāa then thumma not lā you will be helped tunṣarūna
And do not incline toward those who do wrong, lest you be touched by the Fire, and you would not have other than Allāh any protectors; then you would not be helped.
وَأَقِمِ And establish wa-aqimi the prayer l-ṣalata (at the) two ends ṭarafayi (of) the day l-nahāri and (at) the approach wazulafan of mina the night al-layli Indeed inna the good deeds l-ḥasanāti remove yudh'hib'na the evil deeds l-sayiāti That dhālika (is) a reminder dhik'rā for those who remember lildhākirīna
And establish prayer at the two ends of the day and at the approach of the night. Indeed, good deeds do away with misdeeds. That is a reminder for those who remember.
وَٱصْبِرْ And be patient wa-iṣ'bir for indeed fa-inna Allah l-laha (does) not lā let go waste yuḍīʿu (the) reward ajra (of) the good-doers l-muḥ'sinīna
And be patient, for indeed, Allāh does not allow to be lost the reward of those who do good.
فَلَوْلَا So why not falawlā had been kāna of mina the generations l-qurūni before you min before you qablikum those possessing a remnant ulū those possessing a remnant baqiyyatin forbidding yanhawna from ʿani the corruption l-fasādi in fī the earth l-arḍi except illā a few qalīlan of those mimman We saved anjaynā among them min'hum But followed wa-ittabaʿa those who alladhīna did wrong ẓalamū what mā luxury they were given ut'rifū therein fīhi and they were wakānū criminals muj'rimīna
So why were there not1 among the generations before you those of enduring discrimination forbidding corruption on earth - except a few of those We saved from among them? But those who wronged pursued what luxury they were given therein, and they were criminals.
وَمَا And not wamā would kāna your Lord rabbuka destroy liyuh'lika the cities l-qurā unjustly biẓul'min while its people wa-ahluhā (were) reformers muṣ'liḥūna
And your Lord would not have destroyed the cities unjustly while their people were reformers.
وَلَوْ And if walaw your Lord (had) willed shāa your Lord (had) willed rabbuka surely He (could) have made lajaʿala the mankind l-nāsa one community ummatan one community wāḥidatan but not walā they will cease yazālūna to differ mukh'talifīna
And if your Lord had willed, He could have made mankind one community; but they will not cease to differ,
إِلَّا Except illā (on) whom man your Lord has bestowed Mercy raḥima your Lord has bestowed Mercy rabbuka and for that walidhālika He created them khalaqahum And will be fulfilled watammat (the) Word of your Lord kalimatu (the) Word of your Lord rabbika Surely I will fill la-amla-anna Hell jahannama with mina the Jinn l-jinati and the men wal-nāsi all together ajmaʿīna
Except whom your Lord has given mercy, and for that He created them. But the word of your Lord is to be fulfilled that, "I will surely fill Hell with jinn and men all together."
وَكُلًّۭا And each wakullan We relate naquṣṣu to you ʿalayka of min (the) news anbāi (of) the Messengers l-rusuli (for) that mā We may make firm nuthabbitu with it bihi your heart fuādaka And has come to you wajāaka in fī this hādhihi the truth l-ḥaqu and an admonition wamawʿiẓatun and a reminder wadhik'rā for the believers lil'mu'minīna
And each [story] We relate to you from the news of the messengers is that by which We make firm your heart. And there has come to you, in this, the truth and an instruction and a reminder for the believers.
وَقُل And say waqul to those who lilladhīna (do) not lā believe yu'minūna Work iʿ'malū (according) to ʿalā your position makānatikum indeed, we innā (are also) working ʿāmilūna
And say to those who do not believe, "Work according to your position; indeed, we are working.
وَٱنتَظِرُوٓا۟ And wait wa-intaẓirū indeed, we innā (are) ones who wait muntaẓirūna
And wait; indeed, we are waiting."
وَلِلَّهِ And for Allah walillahi (is the) unseen ghaybu (of) the heavens l-samāwāti and the earth wal-arḍi and to Him wa-ilayhi will be returned yur'jaʿu the matter l-amru all (of) it kulluhu so worship Him fa-uʿ'bud'hu and put your trust watawakkal upon Him ʿalayhi And your Lord is not wamā And your Lord is not rabbuka unaware bighāfilin of what ʿammā you do taʿmalūna
And to Allāh belong the unseen [aspects] of the heavens and the earth and to Him will be returned the matter, all of it, so worship Him and rely upon Him. And your Lord is not unaware of that which you do.
